ROTARY CLUB OF WESTON’S 36TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC PROVIDING SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NEED
By Golf Committee Co-Chairs: Deborah O’Connor Richman & Jacqueline Gillman
On Thursday, May 18th, the Rotary Club of Weston will hold their Annual Scholarship Awards Breakfast awarding students graduating from Cypress Bay and Western High Schools, The Sagemont Preparatory School, HANDY (Helping Abused, Neglected and Disadvantaged Youth) and Children’s Harbor with scholarships. This is the 36th consecutive year that the club has awarded scholarships to students in the community. This year the Club hopes to be able to award scholarships to over 50 students valued well in excess of $150,000, thanks to funds raised from the Draw Down Raffle, being held February 23 at Porsche West Broward and the FHV Rotary Golf Classic, being held on April 3 at The Club at Weston Hills.

“We are only able to provide scholarships to students in need because of the generous donations and support of our sponsors, including Freedland Harwin Valori and Ryan, the Golf Title Sponsor for over 10 years, major sponsors, Moises
Gillman Homes, UKG, Acuderm, and Hooters,” said Steve Goldstein, Scholarship Chair. “It is only because of the generosity of these businesses and individuals and the financial support from members of our Rotary Club of Weston, that we are able to continue to help deserving students with an opportunity to achieve their dreams of higher education.”
To apply for a scholarship, students from Cypress Bay, Western, Sagemont Preparatory, HANDY and Children’s Harbor must complete a detailed application that included scholastic achievement, community service hours, extra-curricular activities and achievements, proof of financial need, and reference letters from teachers and administrators. These students are then interviewed by members of the Scholarship Committee, who will evaluate them using objective criteria and finally, make scholarship award determinations. Not only do the students need to demonstrate financial need, but also demonstrate qualities of
Above Self”.
Awards ranging from $1,000 up to full 4-year scholarships are awarded to deserving students. Last year, the Rotary Club of Weston presented a record number of nine (9) Florida Fully Paid Scholarships. These were issued in partnership with the Broward Education Foundation whose mission is “to energize and engage the extended community to transform the lives of Broward County Public School students through the support of quality education”.
