Andrew Tanner, a rising freshman at Cypress Bay High School and a member of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), was accepted to the USNA Summer STEM Program 2021. The prestigious Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD accepted only 280 students from the 5000 applicants. So, it was an honor for the competitive Weston student to be hand-selected because of his high grades in rigorous high school level classes along with his aerospace interests.
Those vying for the coveted opportunity will get to interact with USNA Midshipmen, design and build STEM projects, learn from USNA faculty, and experience STEM with the #1 Top Public College in the Country and #5 "Best Undergraduate Engineering Program" in the Country (released 2021 U.S. News & World Report College Ranking Report) all while making friendships with those of similar interests.
Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 safety protocols, the program is virtual but still promises to be a chance of a lifetime in which the rocket-loving math enthusiast is super excited about.
“Though it may be online, I am ecstatic at the opportunity to attend the USNA Summer STEM Program. I am looking forward to meeting those who work there along with others like myself. Learning about and from students who areattending the camp with similar interests as me will be extremely rewarding. Making connections and learning as much as I can from the faculty and Midshipmen is one of my priorities while attending,” explained Andrew.
The ambitious student is also anxious to learn about the history of the United States Navy, its traditions, the people who serve, and why it is the best navy in the world. He also wants to gain insight into the career tracks of the military, especially those that might provide the greatest opportunity to participate in space missions later in his life. He cannot wait to get exposure to a variety of new subjects and dig deeper into familiar ones from coding to cybersecurity.
“I am looking to pursue the US Naval Academy for college with a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I aspire to be a Naval Aviator and Test Pilot after schooling. My goal for an eventual job would be to work at NASA, to help get to or be the first person/colony on Mars,” added Andrew.
