The upcoming spring season The Oregon and Washington Departments of Fish and Wildlife are pleased to announce opening dates for the spring Chinook fishing season: From March 1 to April 7, from Astoria to Bonneville Dam, anglers may retain one spring Chinook salmon per day (hatchery fish only). The sport fishery will close on March 25 and April 1, dates tentatively set for a commercial catch. Predicted returns for the season are strong, with 100,000 more Chinook salmon expected over last year’s count. If the numbers are accurate, 2014 will experience the fifth-largest run since 1980. For Oregon regulations and updates, visit dfw.state.or.us. For Washington rules, go to wdfw.wa.gov

Inspiring other communities Inspired by Astoria’s FisherPoets Gathering, a number of other folklife events celebrate fisherpoetry on coasts from Kodiak, Alaska to New Bedford, Massachusetts. Close to home, Olympia’s Harbor Days festival invites fisherpoets to its outdoor main stage each year on the Friday evening of the Labor Day weekend. In early May, as part of Seattle’s Maritime Week, fisherpoets compete for cash prizes during the “Stories of the Sea slam, usually held at the Highliner Tavern at Fishermen’s Terminal Thursday evening. Seattle’s massive Northwest Folklife Festival, held at the Seattle Center each Memorial Day weekend, hosts fisherpoets each year on one of its stages. In Kenai, Alaska, in late September, Cook Inlet fisherpoets, their friends and fans gather for “Fisher Poets in Kenai. The Kodiak Arts Council, with the Kodiak Maritime Museum, hosts “Fishermen Out Loud every couple of years, inviting fisherpoets from afar to join locals for an evening performance on the island in the early spring. In New England, fisherpoets from both coasts share the stage as part of New Bedford, Massachusetts’s celebrated “Working Waterfront Festival the end of each September.

And in the original Finnish: Kalastaja ilman merta (Into Sandbergin muistolle) TiedätkÜ, mitä on palata kotiin tyhjin käsin?

Be the picture of good health. Get screened. Vascular diseases threaten the health – and lives – of millions of Americans. Most people with a vascular disease don’t know they have it and go untreated. If you’re 55 or older, have a family history of heart disease or think you’re at risk, a screening could save your life. Talk to your health care provider about scheduling an appointment for Providence’s painless, non-invasive coronary calcium screening. The test takes only minutes, but the benefits could last for years. There is a screening fee. Call 503-717-7556 for fee information. Providence Seaside Hospital is the only facility on the north coast offering coronary calcium scans. Talk to your health care provider about a screening. Or you can make an appointment with cardiologist Robert Morse, D.O., for expert cardiac care close to home. Robert Morse, D.O. Cardiologist

When we’re out there ... there are things we don’t speak about. Understatement is part of fishing’s unwritten code, the wall we lean on to get through our work. But on this one weekend each year in Astoria, the walls come down.
unique language and unwritten codes. The more closed the group, the more fascination it inspires. We humans are curious creatures, craving insight into experiences different from our own. What would it be like to be that crabber, we wonder, to make those waves your commute? The sea of “reality shows and memoirs seems bottomless, as we crane our necks to peer into worlds otherwise closed to those not part of the club.
Closed – except on the last weekend of February, when Astoria’s FisherPoets Gathering invites everyone – mariners and landlubbers alike – to participate in this industry celebration. Paying homage in verse, story and song, this Feb. 21 to 23 marks the 17th annual Gathering. With more than 80 performers scheduled among seven venues, you’ll have to make some choices. New England shanty or Kodiak yarn? Accompanied by harmonica, guitar or gut-bucket? Whatever you choose, you’ll have the rare opportunity to step into another world. (LiterDOO\ -RLQ Âż VKHUSRHW 'DYH 'HQVPRUH DERDUG WKH F/V Cold Stream Saturday morning.) It wouldn’t be hard to disagree with the judges, though. Submissions from artists such as Leslie Peterson, Penelope Culbertson, Yvonne Edwards, LaRee Johnson, Michele B. HOURS: Open 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily (may close earlier in times of inclement winter weather). PRICES: Prices are fair considering the quality of the food, with lunchtime prices on most items hovering between $10 and $13. Many entrĂŠes can be ordered in a “halfâ€? or “fullâ€? portion, which is a savings, although prices for “fullâ€? entrĂŠes can reach up to $24. in on us a bit more. ATMOSPHERE: The restaurant has a traditional English pub feel about it, as of course is the intention, and is dimly lit with rich, dark woods and a fireplace. The view of the Columbia River is unbeatable. ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS: This is traditional, English pub food at its finest. There are lots of English classics, like shepherd’s pie, and a lot of deep-fried fish. There is, however, a vegetarian Cobb salad, and a veggie sandwich. DRINKS: Coffee, tea, soft drinks, beer, wine and a full bar.

ASTORIA — From 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Astoria artist Noel Thomas will demonstrate his quick-study portrait sketches at RiverSea Gallery and will take volunteers as subjects. A portfolio of his most recent drawings will be available, and new watercolors will be on display. Onlookers will be able to view an accomplished artist at work, with the opportunity for meaningful interaction. This is part of the gallery’s Artists on Sundays series, occasional art talks and demonstrations intended to connect people with artists and the process of making art. For upcoming Artists on Sundays events, check with RiverSea Gallery. Many people, both locals
and visitors, have met Noel Thomas when they notice him sketching them as they sit over coffee, linger on the Astoria Riverwalk or wait in line for an event. Drawing forms a part of daily life for Thomas; wherever KH ÂżQGV KLPVHOI D TXLFN VNHWFK in his ever-present notebook is his response to any situation. These studies, drawn in ink, graphite or conte crayon, form an oeuvre that brings his daily wanderings to life. Most of the tasting events at Savor Cannon Beach are limited to 100 tickets, except for the wine walk, which includes 500 participants. Savor Cannon Beach is not like most wine festivals, which are commonly in a trade show format. Without a single large venue in Cannon Beach to host that type of event, Savor Cannon Beach has become a community-wide celebration. Restaurants, shops, gal-
leries and hotels host their own special tastings and other events during the festival. Free- or low-cost tastings of FKRFRODWHV ROLYH RLOV ÂżQLVKing salts and locally distilled spirits are among the events hosted by local businesses. Cannon Beach art galleries present special events and some feature wine and food-related art. Cannon Beach Treasure Company will host an exhibit titled “Savor the Sea,â€? featuring artifacts recovered from sunken and buried treasure sites including
a 215-year-old British East India Company rum bottle that survived a shipwreck with its contents still intact. The wine walk is the biggest event of the festival and WKH QRQSURÂżW FKLOGUHQÂśV FHQWHU continues to receive proceeds from ticket sales for that event. Last year, the wine walk sold out and most of the other festival tasting events were full, so advance ticket purchases are suggested. Tickets for the event are available online at http://savorcannonbeach.com. A $119 Festival Pass offers admission to all six wine tasting events, and a $30 ticket is available for just the Saturday wine walk. Any remaining tickets for individual tasting events will be available at the door for $30 each.
