Lucy’s Books, owned by Lisa Reid, has been named Best Bookstore.
By RYAN HUME The coast is awash in good bookstores, but for Coast Weekend readers one stood out from the pack again this year: Lucy’s Books took home the glory of Best Bookstore, a title it’s enjoyed for the last six-plus years. Owner Lisa Reid, the former library assistant at Astoria High School who bought Lucy’s back in June 2013, has been surprised and grateful for how welcoming and supportive the community has been. While small, the shelves of the store are expertly stocked with a wide variety of new and classic titles in a number of genres, including a section devoted to local authors. Reid said. “Whether people are looking for a book recommendation, dining suggestions, community events information, directions to local attractions or 10 reasons why Astoria is a great place to live. Reid hopes to further foster community outreach in 2015. She began a book club last August, which meets upstairs on a Saturday afternoon once a month. Beginning in March, Lucy’s will also host author events during the Second Saturday Art Walks in downtown Astoria. Lucy’s books is located at 348 12th St. in the heart of downtown Astoria.

By DWIGHT CASWELL Leah Cristaldi, barista extraordinaire, says of 3 Cups Coffee House, “Our philosophy is that by the third cup you’re family. We take that very seriously. Indeed, walking into 3 Cups, under the Astoria Bridge in the old Finnish Meat Market building, is a lot like entering the home of a large and busy family. There may be half a dozen people playing chess, kids in the corner by the bookshelves, and people working on their computers or simply reading while enjoying the famous Thundermuck coffee. It’s friendly and a little cluttered, like a friend’s big kitchen. That is, if you can watch your friend roasting coffee in a large machine at the back of the kitchen. Sea Breeze Restaurant & Lounge is located near the junction of U.S. highways 101 and 26.
A GLIMPSE INSIDE An occasional feature by MATT LOVE
Sea Breeze Restaurant & Lounge There I was, driving home after a Saturday afternoon presentation in Cannon Beach, when it came into view: the Sea Breeze Restaurant, just west of the U.S. Highway 101 and U.S. Highway 26 junction. I noticed a neon sign that read “lounge” and thought to myself: why not? It had been a great show. I made a few bucks. A mini celebration of one beer was in order. The Sea Breeze was open but the parking lot empty, and I relished its emptiness
because I love being the only person inside a coastal lounge on a weekend afternoon. I always find great stories at that non-witching hour. I walked inside the lounge: two tables, two booths, five seats at the bar. A football game on television played without sound. I was the only customer. Perfect. I couldn’t believe I’d never stopped in here before. I wondered what else I missed driving by it a thousand times.
A kindly bartender came up and took my order of a draft beer and halibut sandwich to go. I had the place all to myself until a couple of locals strolled in a few moments later. That was fine. They were quiet and didn’t seem like the type who screamed in public at football games on television. I never go to those loud places. No stories are ever there. I met the owner Steve Russell. He and his wife, Lisa, have owned the Sea Breeze for 30 years! We talked a bit, and I learned that Sea Breeze moves a lot of bloody marys in the mornings when the tourists are rolling through on their way to fishing, clamming and beachcombing. I guess going to the coast does that to some city people, makes them crave good bloody marys in the morning. Why not? It’s called vacation. The beer was good and cheap, and the sandwich smelled delicious. I left the lounge but knew I’d be back. The Sea Breeze, located at 84774 U.S. Highway 101, is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Jalapeño Smuggler, a popular drink at Astoria Coffeehouse & Bistro, was invented by bartender Cory Teubner and pairs well with huevos rancheros.
A European-style bistro and coffeehouse by day — serving up regional cuisine under the direction of 2014 Iron Chef Goes Coastal winner Chef Sean Whittaker — the Astoria Coffeehouse & Bistro proves that it doesn’t let things slide once the lights dim. The venue on 11th Street also becomes a bustling bar by night — one that voters picked as Best Bar of 2014. Creating a menu of martinis and other cocktails, the bartenders, including this year’s Best Bartender Cory Teubner, use good ingredients, fresh fruit, and local liquors and spices to mix up delicious drinks for every taste preference. The bar also has specials each week, with sushi and martini Monday night specials as well as tacos and margaritas Thursdays, both served from 5 to 8 p.m. Astoria Coffeehouse & Bistro is located at 243 11th St. For more information, call 503-325-1781 or visit astoriacoffeehouse. com. Also check out the coffeehouse on Facebook for daily specials.

By RYAN HUME Creativity and fresh ingredients are the staples behind Cory Teubner’s popular cocktail menu at Astoria Coffeehouse & Bistro at 243 11th Ave. in downtown Astoria. “Classics are great, but following a recipe only gets you so far,” Teubner said. “You have to ¿QG \RXU RZQ QLFKH ´ Originally from Deep River, Washington, this Best Bartender spent his summers in Astoria working as a bar-back and server to put himself through school. After graduating from Willamette University, he moved to town permanently and tended bar at Clemente’s before joining owner Jim Defeo over at the coffeehouse in 2013. “Jimbo allowed me to use the skills I had been picking up to make a creative cocktail menu
with both classics and wild ones like the Jalapeño Smuggler,” Teubner said. The Smuggler is a twist on a classic margarita, rimmed with a smoky and spicy pepper and sea salt combination, and it’s one of his most popular concoctions, Teubner estimates. “I should thank Pat and Tom from Pat’s Pantry spice shop here in Astoria,” Teubner noted. “They have turned me on to many spices and vinegars that I would never have stumbled upon on my own.” Besides getting creative and KDYLQJ WKH IUHVKHVW DQG ¿QHVW LQgredients possible, of course, you have to taste the drinks you serve.
