great oregon coast garage sale

Sale away with me Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY

Forget your Internet Explorer, shut off your Firefox and set your Chrome aside. This weekend, there’s only one kind of browser that matters at the Oregon Coast and that’s the kind of browser who is willing to roll up their sleeves and dive into the Great Oregon Coast Garage Sale. Centered on Lincoln City but stretching more than 30 miles from Otis to Newport, the garage sale is a dream come true for bargain hunters from near and far. Sharon Wiest, executive chef at the Lincoln City Culinary Center, said she plans her year around the event and that it pays to be prepared. “Last year I had to drive back home by 1 pm to unload my car full of loot to make room for more,â€? she said. “And don’t forget to pack snacks and water so you don’t have to miss a second.â€? The sale began in 2002 as a City-run event to draw visitors to town. In 2002, the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce took up the reins, using the sale as a fundraiser for chamber activities as well as a way to promote local businesses. “We wanted to have an event that would attract

people for multiple days, said chamber Executive Director Nonni Augustine, adding that people come from as far as Idaho to peruse the bargains. Augustine said many shoppers arrive the night before the sale starts to pore over the garage sale map in their hotel rooms and plan out their route for the weekend. “What happens sometimes is they have more than one car and the party will break into two, she said, “one hits the south end and the other hits the north end. “They really do come and just buy like crazy, she added. Augustine said the sale is a perfect way to people celebrate the onset of spring by clearing out their closets and provides a nice way for visitors to see the coast at very little cost. “It doesn’t cost anything to drive around and look at people’s stuff, she said. The sale runs from Friday, April 19, to Sunday, April 21. Maps detailing all 94 sale sites are available from the chamber office at 4039 NE Logan Road and the Lincoln City Cultural Center at 540 NE Hwy. 101 as well as hotels and grocery stores throughout town. The maps can also be downloaded from the chamber’s website, www.lcchamber.com. For more information, call the chamber at 541-994-3070.

Depoe Bay crab feed

Pick your crab and pluck your duck

TODAY photo

There are not many events that offer you the chance to come face to face with a crab the size of a school bus, play at being a member of the coast guard and race a rubber ducky — all in a single afternoon. But the Depoe Bay Crab Feed and Wooden Boat Show doesn’t let the fact that it is held in the world’s smallest harbor stop it from packing a lot into a weekend. At the center of the Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21, event are dinners of locally caught Dungeness crab with all the trimmings, served at the Depoe Bay Community Hall all weekend. Half crab dinners are $12 and full crab dinners are $18, with a indoor and outdoor dining options and a beer garden also available The wooden boat show will feature 40 exhibits of both vintage and modern vessels from all over the Northwest. A free model boat building demonstration provides both the young and young-at-heart the opportunity to build their own models. At noon on Sunday, the Ducky Derby will see hundreds of colorful bathtub ducks released to race into the harbor. Buy a ticket for a chance to win great prizes

provided by Depoe Bay merchants, including clothing, food, an authentic shipwreck treasure coin and ladies’ gold coin pendant. Anyone who wants to get a feel for what it is like TODAY photo to patrol the waters of the Pacific Ocean will have the chance to find out, with Depoe Bay’s U.S. Coast Guard station offering tours of its rescue boats stationed in harbor. Looming over the whole event will be Louie, the giant mascot of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, creating a perfect photo opportunity. The event runs from 10 am to 5 pm each day. For more information, contact the Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce at 541-765-2889, go to www.depoebaychamber.org, or email info@depoebaychamber.org.

Every so often, a band comes along with a name that makes you stop and think. In the case of jazz trio coNtEXT, your first thought might well be ‘someone’s caps lock key must be broken’ but, once you get over the seemingly random application of capital letters, a pattern emerges. Because music is an ongoing story that musicians add to with every tune they play, what comes before sets the stage for what comes NEXT, making context key to understanding. Unleash your community spirit At Lincoln City’s Community Days celebration Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY

There’s no such thing as a stranger when you are golfing knee deep in the mud of Siletz Bay; or when you are rocking your best ’80s hairstyle to the sounds of Depeche Mode; or when you are trying to figure out the best plan of attack for a puttputt golf hole that involves a pool table and a spatula. And that’s why all these events have found their natural home in Lincoln City’s Community Days, 10 days of events aimed at getting people outside to meet their neighbors and celebrate what makes a town a town. “It’s a way of saying ‘thank you,’” Community Days co-chair Shirley Hill said. “Thanks because this is a great community and thank you to the people that put so much time into the community over the past year.” Hill said the celebration changes from year to year, with anyone free to come along to a Community Days meeting and add an event, as long as they are willing to follow through and organize it. Most of the events are free, others charge a small fee and others ask only that attendees bring a can of food for the local food pantry. Hill said all the events are open to everyone, adding that the recent decision to shift Community Days to a fixed date in the last week of April is aimed at making it easier for visitors to plan a trip to join the fun. “If you can’t find something to do in this week, I’m going to have to come and slap you around,” Hill said, “because there is something for everyone this week — from the pony rides to the pub crawl.” FRIDAY, APRIL 19 • Mud Flat Golf — No lingering on this course, which is only available for a few hours when the tide goes out at Siletz Bay. Trade your golf shoes for rubber boots or go barefoot as you and three friends tackle what must be one of the lowest courses in the world. $5. 2-4 pm. SATURDAY, APRIL 20 • Putt-putt golf — Inspect the handiwork on display at 18 businesses throughout town, all of whom have accepted the challenge of crafting a putt-putt hole to test your skill. “It does not need to use a golf ball and a putter,” organizer Sandy Gruber said. “They get to use whatever they want.” Participants will have up to six hours to complete the 18-hole course, with all finishers entered into a Monday, April 22, prize drawing. Gruber said the extended runtime, doubled from last year, is intended to give people time to enjoy the course while also taking a good look at the participating businesses. “It’s all about getting your family out and going into businesses that you might not have been in before, or that you are not aware of because they are new,” Gruber said. $5 per player, with all proceeds going to the American Can-

cer Society. Under 6s play free. Plays can start at any one of the 18 locations: Blockbuster, Beachtown Coffee, Strung Out on Beads and Coffee, Jabberwocky Boutique, Pirate Coffee Company, Driftwood Public Library, Price ‘N Pride, Nelscott Wine Shop, Christmas Cottage, Starfish Framing, Captain Dan’s Pirate Pastry, Gem Hypnosis, J’s Computer, B K Mulligan’s, LC Cultural Center, LC Community Center, LC Elks Lodge, Rockfish Bakery. • Ducky derby — Back after a few years away and now in a new location, the derby will see rubber duckies race down the water slide at the Lincoln City Community Center. Buy your ducky ahead of time for $5 from the community center, Oceanlake Elementary School or the Nelscott Wine Shop. The race begins at 1:15 pm at the community center, 2150 NE Oar Place. • ’80s Prom — Whether you are ironically strutting to Bon Jovi or seriously can’t get enough of Bananarama, this prom, organized by the Lincoln City Young Professionals, is the place for you. 7-11 pm at the Eventuary, 560 SW Fleet Avenue. 21 and over. $10 at the door, $8 in advance, available at Nelscott Wine Shop, 3203 SW Hwy. 101. SUNDAY, APRIL 21 • Eagles breakfast — Start the day with breakfast at the Eagles Lodge, at SW 32nd Street and Hwy. 101, for $6. Buy one get one half-price with a donation of canned food for the food pantry. 9 am-noon. • Beach Bark — A popular bumper sticker along the Oregon Coast is a subtle oval that reads simply “Wag more, bark less.” As pleasant and encouraging as this little bit of decorative philosophy is, it has no place at this event, where barks (and wags galore) will be not only accepted, but encouraged.

Beach Bark • TODAY photo

Started by Kip Ward and Katrica Hansen in 2010, the Beach Bark has raised thousands of dollars for emergency veterinary care by simply gathering animal lovers together for a beach walk and hamburger lunch. “In Lincoln City, if a stray cat needs neutering, or if a struggling family’s beloved dog is injured by a car, the Beach Bark fund is there,” Ward said. “No red tape. No waiting. Thanks to the Beach Bark, those animals are provided emergency care when and where they need it. No questions asked.” At 11 am Beach Bark walkers will meet at the D River Wayside and head south to Canyon Drive Park Beach Access and, from there to The Eventuary at 560 SW Fleet Avenue for a

on the cover pet-friendly barbecue lunch open to all. Doors will be open until 2 pm. Lunch is $5, and Beach Bark T-shirts will be available for $20 at the Eventuary. For more information, find the Beach Bark on Facebook, or call the Historic Anchor Inn, at 541-996-3810. MONDAY, APRIL 22 • Cemetery Quest — A challenge running throughout Community Days, this Quest aims to get people outside and exploring the Taft Pioneer Cemetery, across the Highway from the Inn at Spanish Head. Pick up a map for this family-friendly treasure hunt at the Eagle Lodge, SW 32nd Street and Hwy. 101, in exchange for a can of food. • Free the trees — Join the Salmon Drift Creek Watershed Council and the US Forest Service in freeing hundreds of trees on Earth Day. Pixieland has been the site of habitat restoration for the past five years, with hundreds of saplings planted in plastic mesh tree tubes to minimize browsing pressure. The trees are now ready to be freed to flourish at the site. In addition, many baby Scotch brooms are popping up at the site and need to be pulled. Bring gloves, garden shears and loppers if you have them. 4:30 to 7:30 pm, meet at the Pixieland entrance gate on Hwy 18, about a quarter-mile from the junction with Hwy 101. For more information, contact Hui Rodomsky at 541-996-3161 or at hui. rodomsky@salmondrift.org. TUESDAY, APRIL 23 • Ice Cream Social — Stay cool when you introduce yourself to Miss Oregon at this informal meet and greet. 3-5 pm, Mo’s Restaurant, 860 SW 51st Street.

Not to be missed

With the arrival of Nichole Mead in Lincoln City, Community Days Co-chair Shirley Hill will begin her sixth year as chaperoning Miss Oregon around the community. During her time at the coast, Mead will welcomed as a guest at the Lincoln City Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions clubs, a public ice cream social and the town’s elementary schools. Hill said the visits give local kids the chance to learn about the Miss Oregon Scholarship Program, which provides scholarship assistance for young women who excel at a statewide pageant. Throughout the years, she said, kids’ questions for Miss Oregon have included: “Do you have a Mr. Oregon?” “Did you come in a limo?” and “Is that your mom?” Hill said she admires how winners of the Miss Oregon pageant put their lives on hold for a year to represent the state while furthering their goal of a college education. “It’s heartwarming to know that there is a program out there that helps these young women honor their dreams, because that’s what the Miss Oregon Scholarship Program does,” she said, adding: “As they leave after having experienced Lincoln City and all the activities, it’s like waving one of my kids goodbye.”

Big shoes to ďŹ ll Organizers of the Tillamook County June Dairy Parade are now accepting entries for the 2013 event, with the theme “Clowning Around.â€? The Tillamook County Festivals Committee chose the theme in honor of Robert Dunn, clown and balloon-twister extraordinaire, an active and dedicated volunteer who helped plan the June Dairy Parade and the Children’s Parade. The parade, which has been running since 1957, is part of the June Dairy Festival weekend, which also features the Tillamook County Rodeo. The Tillamook County Creamery Association-sponsored parade will take place on June 22, starting at 11 am at Goodspeed Park. The Children’s Parade will not take place due to the retirement of volunteers and no new volunteers coming forward. Parade entry forms are now available at the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce or by emailing jdparade@yahoo.com. There is no cost to enter the parade. For more details, go to the June Dairy Parade page on the Tillamook Chamber of Commerce Web site at www.tillamookchamber.org.

After Earth Day, sit still

Whether you’ve spent Earth Day pulling ivy, planting trees or cleaning up a river, you can give your muscles a break with a movie and discussion night at Lincoln City’s Driftwood Public Library on Monday, April 22. The opening film, “The Story of Stuff, is a lively, 20-minute description of a planet in crisis and an exploration of the hidden costs of production in a consumer society. Narrator Anne Leonard spent 10 years studying where stuff comes from and where it goes. The main feature, “To the Arctic, is a 40-minute IMAX documentary, which follows a polar bear as she struggles to protect her cubs in a disintegrating environment. Narrated by Meryl Streep, this 2013 film presents some of the most beautiful footage ever of seldom-seen animals in a nearly inaccessible environment. The free screenings are presented in conjunction with the Congregational Church of Lincoln City, and will be followed by discussion and refreshments. The screenings start at 6 pm in the library, on the second floor of the Lincoln Square Civic Complex 801 SW Hwy. 101. For more information, contact Ken Hobson at 541-996-1242 or kenh@lincolncity.org.

beach reads

Get in on the ground floor While great books often make great movies, there is always a certain satisfaction to be gained from having pictured a story in your mind before seeing it translated for the screen. And, judging by the success that author Jim Lynch is having in getting his works turned into movies and TV shows, his April 20 reading in Manzanita might be a good place to start visualizing the action in his latest novel, “Truth Like the Sun,” before the producers get hold of it. Lynch will appear at The Hoffman Center to read from the work, a catand-mouse story of urban intrigue set in Seattle — both in 1962, when Seattle hosted the World’s Fair; and in 2001, after its transformation in the Microsoft gold rush. Described by The New York Times as “a gifted and original novelist,” Lynch has successfully sold the film rights for his first novel “The Highest Tide” and the TV rights for his follow up work “Border Songs.” “The Highest Tide” (2005), won the Pacific Northwest Bookseller Award, was performed on stage in Seattle and became an international bestseller. “Border Songs” (2009) was also adapted to the stage and won the Washington State Book Award as well as the Indies Choice Honor Book Award. The April 20 reading is set for 7 pm at 594 Laneda Avenue. Admission is $7 After Lynch’s reading and Q&A, there will be an Open Mic where up to nine local writers will read five minutes of their original work. For more information, go to hoffmanblog.org or contact Vera Wildauer at vwildauer@gmail.com.

get out! The lure of a reel-y great event Any fisherman will tell you that if you want to land the best fish, you have to use the best bait. And the organizers of the 2013 Bounty on the Bay have taken that advice to heart, kicking off the event with a BBQ pulled pork dinner and fishing seminar on Friday, May 31. But that’s not the only item in the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership’s tackle box, with the group also offering a fishing tournament, seafood feast, silent auction and award ceremony on Saturday June 1. Registration is now open for the event and attendees must register by May 25 in order to take part. Organizers recommend early registration for the guided fishing trips, which tend to fill up fast. Event sponsor Garibaldi House Inn and Suites is offering discounted rates for Friday and Saturday night stays for people who mention Bounty on the Bay when booking. This annual fundraiser supports the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership’s efforts to restore water quality, enhance degraded habitats, reduce sedimentation and lessen the impacts of coastal flooding. For more information about Tillamook Estuaries Partnership, or to register, go to www.tbnep.org. For more information about Bounty on the Bay, contact Lisa Phipps at 503322-2222 or at lphippa@tbnep.org.

Get out and a trout The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will stock Hebo Lake with 3,000 rainbow trout in advance of a free family fishing event slated for Saturday, April 20. ODFW will provide equipment including rods, reels and bait; and staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist youngsters who want to learn how to fish. Angling education instructors and volunteers will be present to answer questions and offer assistance to less experienced anglers. “This is an excellent opportunity for anyone to discover fishing,” said Ron Rehn of ODFW, “or get reacquainted if they have been away from the sport for a while.” The event will take place from 9 am to 2 pm at the lake, which is located three and a half miles east of the Hebo Ranger Station on the Hebo Mountain Road. From Hebo, take Hwy. 22 a quarter mile east, then turn left onto Forest Road 14. The U.S. Forest Service, which manages the lake and campground, will waive the $5 day use fee during this event. Overnight camping fees will continue to apply. Under Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations, anglers ages 13 and under can fish for free while those 14-17 will need to have a juvenile angling license. All fishing regulations continue to apply during this event.

Enough food to last for-ages Get ready to kiss your grocery store goodbye. Once wild food expert John Kallas has opened your eyes to all the food that can be picked, dug up and plucked on the Oregon Coast, you might never step through those sliding doors again. Kallas, founder of the Institute for the Study of Edible Wild Plants and Other Foragables in Portland, is running a series of outdoor workshops in Lincoln City and Tillamook aimed at teaching how to harvest clams, mussels and a range of sea vegetables. Fees for adults are on a sliding scale from $25-50, with students asked to pay what they feel is fair. Children pay their age. Registration is required for all classes and there is an option to carpool from Portland to the coast. In addition to the classes, Kallas will host a Native Shores Wild Food Rendezvous in Rockaway Beach from Friday, May 10, to Monday, May 13. The conference aims to give attendees a hand-on demonstration of the role sea vegetables, shellfish and coastal wild foods play in survival, primitive living, and simple living. Participants will learn about a variety of wild edibles along with the techniques used to bring them to the table. Accommodation is a campsite or basic lodge rooms. Cost for the weekend is $340.  The new Spotlight Show at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery will feature work from a Newport artist who recently received one of the highest awards given out by the Watercolor Society of Oregon. John Bradley received the society’s Gold Award at its fall 2012 convention. The award is reserved for artists who have won numerous awards in the semi-annual conventions where often more than 300 entries are pared down to 80 paintings chosen for each show, juried by nationally recognized artists. Bradley has been painting for more than 22 years and has taken as well as taught many classes in the county for Yaquina Art Association and the 4C’s in Lincoln City. He has also taken art classes at Berkely College of Arts and Crafts, Sculpture Classes at Lane Community College, Intensive Watercolor Studio classes in Taos, New Mexico and Diablo Junior College in Concord, California. Displayed alongside Bradley’s works will be those of Jeff Bertuleit, a past president of the Yaquina Art Association, who creates both watercolors and oil paintings. Bertuleit has been painting for the past 20 years and has enjoyed combining travels to Europe and Hawaii with his art. He also enjoys painting ocean scenes plein air. The gallery, located at 789 NW Beach Drive in Nye Beach, Newport, is open from 11 am to 4 pm daily and the show runs from Saturday, April 20 to Friday, May 3.
