ODDS?
Theatre West is holding auditions for its upcoming production of “The Odd Couple (Female Version),” a Neil Simon comedy that turns his classic original on its head. Felix and Oscar become Florence and Olive in this gender-swapping reinterpretation of Simon’s 1965 hit. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two
Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same. Director Rich Emery is looking for six women and two men to bring the play to life for its July run, with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings as well as one Sunday matinée on a date to be determined after the play is cast. Auditions will be held at 7 pm on Sunday, April 9, and Monday, April 10, at the theatre, located at 3536 Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City. For more information, call 541-994-5663.
There is still time to catch the world premiere of “Riva” as it concludes its twoweek run at the Newport Performing Arts Center this weekend. The play is adapted from the novel “Riva Beside Me” by Carla Perry and based on the true story of her life growing up in a dysfunctional family in Manhattan. But Riva’s journey finds hope and transition where humor and love prevail. Riva’s hopeless heart and withering spirit become the charge of an unlikely Guardian Angel who ushers her toward a life with love and self-transformation. She meets young Richard Marvel who empowers her through his kindness and love. He shows her the vibrant city and the greatness of a world beyond; a metaphoric juxtaposition to her imposed isolation and invisibility. Gradually, Riva restores her broken voice and gains the strength and confidence to embrace life and claim her freedom. The cast includes five teenagers: Quitze RosePilling, Drake Simon, Cassie Beal, Leo Johns and Grace Burns plus three adults: CJ McCarty, Ram Papish and Pete Theodore. The play is directed by Mary Eastman, with KE

Edmisten as assistant director. Sarah Gayle designed the set and costumes, Ernest Brown is the technical director and the play is produced by Marc Maislen of New Visions Arts. “Riva” runs through Sunday,
April 9, with performances at 7 pm on Friday April 7; 2 pm and 7 pm on Saturday, April 8; and 2 pm on Sunday, April 9, all at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets, $18 for adults; $16 for students, are available
from the center box office, online at www.coastarts.org or by calling 541-265-ARTS. For more information, contact New Visions Arts, at 541-635-0030 or email newvisionsarts@gmail.com.
PLAY TIME IN TILLAMOOK The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts is seeking show submissions from directors for its upcoming season, which runs from October 2017 to September 2018. The group is looking for a balanced season with some classics, some comedies and
some dramas. The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 14. Budding directors can make their submissions online at www. tillamooktheater.com by following the link for “Future Productions.” Submission forms can also
be downloaded from the website and emailed to info@ tillamooktheater.com or mailed to TAPA, PO Box 571, Tillamook OR, 97141. Or, to have a copy of the form mailed or emailed to you, contact TAPA at 503-842-6305 or info@ tillamooktheater.com
Proposals should include the director’s full contact information and availability for October 2017 through September 2018, as well as a copy of the script. The group is also interested in hearing from people who want to direct but don’t have a specific show in mind.

One of Us Productions presents A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” in Yachats By Barbara B. Covell For the TODAY Photos by Chris Graamans It is a rare timeless love that endures 50 years of correspondence, from early childhood to midlife. “Love Letters,” the Pulitzer Prize-nominated stage play by A.R.Gurney tells the story of two lifelong friends, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, in their journey through childhood, adolescence, early and mature adult years. Their relationship endures multiple years of separation, marriages, careers and failed dreams; yet continues through their letters which maintain their intimacy and connection. “I chose this script because it is a beautiful, compelling story of a man and woman drawn to each other, but never married,” said Director Robbie Schoonover. “They share their hopes, dreams, values and disappointments in the context of their lifelong letters. Letter writing is becoming a lost art, a declining source of communication. I hope that audiences will be drawn into Melissa and Andy’s unusual story and leave with a lot to talk about.” Schoonover’s long-term experience as a director led her to cast the two roles of Andy and Melissa with thee sets of actors portraying the couple. “Our local community audiences will have the opportunity to engage in different renditions of the show,” she said. “Each couple will interpret Gurney’s story line uniquely, which
makes this play even more powerful”. Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, and Melissa Gardner, the blue-blooded children of two affluent East Coast families, begin corresponding in 1937 when they are in second grade, after Andy attends Melissa’s birthday party. Melissa is blunt, acerbic, sarcastic and flirty, and not particularly fond of letter-writing.
But Andy, who likes to follow the rules, finds in writing a freedom he can’t experience anywhere else. In fits and starts, they keep the correspondence going. They are shipped off to different boarding schools, attend college, fall in love with other people, marry and have children. Yet they keep writing letters. Their connection deepens across the years even as life keeps them apart. The characters of Andy and Melissa are different as night and day. Both born to wealth and position, they take two different life paths — one achieves great success professionally while the other bottoms out scholastically and in artistic pursuits — persevering through alcoholism and bipolar disease. While romantically attached, each marries other partners, but they maintain their lifelong connection. It is this intense spiritual bond that paints their portrait as true lovers. “Love Letters” most recently toured nationally with actors Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal portraying Melissa and Andy in
this story of first loves and second chances. While written in 1988, this show has seen hundreds of productions with New York and Hollywood’s finest actors, performing one-night, five-night, or six-month runs. It maintains its popularity because of the way Gurney crafted the story.
Choose your cast
Gurney’s tender story of love and life features Bob Barrett and Johnni Prince on April 7, 14, and 22; Dean Peterson and Lorraine Barrett on April 8, 16, and 21; and Greg and Barbara Covell on April 9, 15, and 23.
The Yachats production of “Love Letters” premieres at 5:30 pm on Friday, April 7, featuring Bob Barrett and Johnni Prince for a Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program dinner theatre benefit. Tickets for this show are $65 apiece and available from Alice at 541-547-4599. On Saturday, April 8, at 7:30 pm, the show opens to the public at the Yachats Commons with Dean Peterson and Lorraine Barrett. On Sunday, April 9, a 2 pm matinée performance will feature Greg and Barbara Covell. Each show over three weekends features a different cast, concluding on Sunday afternoon, April 23. Director Schoonover hopes this will entice audiences to return for each rendering of Gurney’s script. Tickets are $12 apiece and can be purchased at the door or in advance from Toad Hall, Yachats Video, Touchstone Gallery, Waldport Video and Crescent Moon Clothing in Waldport. Audubon Society of Lincoln City offers free birding field trips with experienced trip leaders on the second Saturday of most months during the year. Beginning birders are welcome. Binoculars and guidebooks are available for those who don’t have their
own, and carpooling is usually an option. For a list of upcoming field trips, go to http:// lincolncityaudubon.org/ calendar.html and mark your calendar for the group’s next bird walk on Saturday, May 13, through the Villages at Cascade Head Open Space.
JUST A HINT OF GREEN The latest workshop from the Lincoln City Master Gardeners will tackle the topic of microgreens — sharing simple techniques for growing a salad garden indoors in a small space, year round. Requiring neither greenhouse nor cold frame, grow light nor heat mat, microgreens are soil sprouts that are delicious, healthy, full of nutrients and easy to grow. On Thursday, April 13, Master Gardener Sonja Lovas will host a roundtable discussion on these diminutive delicacies from 10 am to noon at the Newport campus of Oregon Coast Community College, 400 SE
College Way. Microgreens are tiny, edible greens grown from the seeds of vegetables and herbs. They germinate in soil or a soil substitute and are harvested at between seven and 14 days old when one to three inches tall. Their flavor is much more intense than mature greens, making them perfect for garnishing soups and sandwiches. Master Gardener Round Tables are free to all, but please call the OSU
Extension Office at 541574-6534 or register online at www.orcoastmga.org/ rtablersvpform to ensure adequate seating and hand outs. For a list of upcoming roundtable topics, go to oregonstate.edu/lincoln/ master_gardeners. • Mark your calendar for the 2017 Lincoln County Master Gardener Plant and Garden Sale. Taking place on Saturday, May 20, the event will see local Master Gardeners offer vegetable starts and a wide variety of plants for sale from 9 am to 2 pm at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds in Newport.

PARTY WITH THE at Marine Science Day in Newport
Visitors to Newport’s Hatfield Marine Science Center will get the chance to take a behind-the-scenes look at laboratories and learn more about ocean research when Marine Science Day returns this Saturday, April 8. From 10 am to 4 pm the free event will feature interactive, hands-on exhibits and opportunities to talk with researchers from Oregon State University and other state and federal agencies. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Student Research” and student scientists will be among the researchers presenting exhibits on marine mammals, oyster aquaculture, ocean acidification, ocean noise, seagrass ecology, fisheries, deep sea vents and more. Visitors can learn about research diving with the OSU Dive Team, observe microscopic plankton, tour a
genetics lab and hear about the NOAA Corps’ 100th year as a commissioned service. Special events will include an opening ceremony for the Experimental Seawater Facility at 10:30 am, followed at 1 pm by a public feeding of Opal the octopus in the Visitors Center. And at 2:30 pm, José R. Marín Jarrín of the Galápagos-based Charles Darwin Foundation will give a lecture on the importance of student research experiences. Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Coast Aquarium will be on hand with activities for kids while The Oregon Coast STEM Hub and representatives from OSU and Oregon Coast Community College will engage K-12 students interested in pursuing marine studies. Visitors will also be able to learn about the progress of OSU’s Marine Studies Initiative,
which seeks to host 500 students-in-residence in Newport by 2025. “With a new teaching and research facility in the fundraising and design phase, Marine Science Day offers a great opportunity to understand why we are so excited about OSU’s Marine Studies Initiative,” said Hatfield director Bob Cowen. “It is also a chance to learn about our scientists — who we are, what we do, and
how we, as university, state and federal partners, work together and with communities to better understand and solve our marine and coastal challenges.” The Hatfield center is located in South Beach, southeast of Yaquina Bay Bridge. More information on the event is available online at http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/ marinescienceday.
TIMBER TALK, TIMES TWO Dig out some nutrition advice
Natural resource economist Ernie Niemi will deliver a presentation on the role of the timber industry in Oregon’s Forest Economy this Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9 in Newport and Lincoln City. Niemi will make the case that the timber industry contributes far less to the state’s economy than other sectors, including outdoor recreation. “Too often ignored entirely are the collateral costs of logging practices as they increase atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate change, degrade streams essential for fish habitat, foul drinking
water, and reduce residential property values,” he said. “Despite its diminishing place in our economy, the timber industry wields vastly disproportionate influence over local and state policies.”
The events, hosted by Lincoln County Community Rights, will also feature screenings of Pacific Rivers’ award-winning documentary, “Behind the Emerald Curtain,” on the effects of
industrial logging and aerial pesticide spraying on coastal forests, communities and ecosystems. And representative of Citizens for a Healthy County will speak about Measure 21-177, which would ban aerial spraying of pesticides in Lincoln County and will appear on the May 2017 ballot. The presentations will take place at 2 pm on Saturday, April 8, at the Newport 60+ Activity Center, 20 SE 2nd Street, and at 3 pm on Sunday, April 9, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Hwy. 101.
Registration is now open for a pair of “That’s My Farmer” programs on offer in Lincoln City and Newport on Wednesday, April 19, courtesy of Samaritan Cancer Resource Centers. Each free, 90-minute seminar will combine nutrition education and a cooking lesson geared to cancer survivors and patients. Participants will learn how to prepare nutritious and delicious meals and be given ingredients to take home.
Each participant may bring a guest. The Lincoln City seminar will begin at 11 am in the Health Professions Education Center, 3011 NE 28th Street. The Newport seminar will begin at 5:30 pm at the Center for Health Education, 740 SW Ninth Street. To register, call the Samaritan Cancer Resource Center in Corvallis at 541-768-2171 or email CancerResourceCenter@ samhealth.org.

Karen Karbo, author of multiple award-winning novels, memoirs and works of non-fiction, will visit Newport on Sunday, April 9, to discuss the art of the personal essay. “The stranger the times, the more the personal essay shines, “Karbo said. “Not to be confused with the sleep aid we learned to crank out in sixth grade, nor the over-written plea included in our college application, the best personal essay is passionate, eccentric, provocative and about one inch from coming off the rails. Which makes them a blast to write.” Karbo said the free workshop aims to give students a better sense of their voice, true subjects, point of view and power. Karbo’s novels include “Trespassers Welcome Here,” “The Diamond Lane” and “Motherhood Made a Man Out of Me.” Her 2004 memoir, “The Stuff of Life,” about the last year she spent with her father before his death, was a New York Times Notable Book, a People Magazine Critics’ Choice and
a winner of the Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. A Portland resident, Karbo was one of 24 authors selected for the inaugural Amtrak Residency. Her next book, “In Praise of Difficult Women,” is forthcoming in 2018. Sunday’s workshop, sponsored by the Willamette
Writers Coast Chapter, will run from 2 to 4 pm at the Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street. Willamette Writers is the largest writers’ organization in Oregon and one of the largest writers’ organizations in the United States. For more information, go to http:// willamettewriters.com/coast.
Hospice screening Samaritan North Lincoln Hospice will present a screening of the awardwinning film “New Rules for End of Life Care” on Friday, April 7, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, followed by a question-and-answer session with the film’s creator. “Many of us don’t understand that there’s a normal, natural way of dying,” said Barbara Karnes, RN, nationally known hospice care author and educator who created the 25-minute film. “My goal is

to help neutralize the fear that families and significant others bring to the bedside during the end-of-life experience.” As a former hospice nurse, Karnes was at the bedside of hundreds of people during the dying process. She was driven to explore the dynamics of dying when she noticed that each death followed a near identical script, that each person went through the stages of death in almost the same manner and that most families had the same
questions. In the film, Karnes compassionately explains the natural stages of the dying process. She provides important information on end-of-life care that addresses behavior changes pertaining to food, sleep and pain management. The screening will begin at 7 pm at the cultural center, 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, call Samaritan North Lincoln Hospice at 541-996-7328.

DRIPPING WITH TALENT LADY RIZO RETURNS TO NEWPORT FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY By Barbara B. Covell For the TODAY
It is the epitome of a fairytale. Small town girl with big dreams and a powerhouse talent lands in New York City and becomes an International star. But Amelia Zirin-Brown did not evolve from a Disney script. She was born in Lincoln County, raised in Newport, and attended Newport High School. “The first year of my life we lived in an Airstream trailer behind the Victorian house my parents were renovating,” Zirin-Brown says. “I grew up in that Victorian House on the Bayfront. My parents were very involved in community theatre and helped orchestrate the development of the Performing Arts Center.” Zirin-Brown’s mother, Deborah, was originally from New York. “She befriended Nancy Mittleman-Merkens, who ran a dance studio and was also from New York,” Zirin-Brown said. “They both became pregnant at the same time, so Nancy’s daughter, Amber, has always been a sister to me. Growing up, we always knew that we wanted to live in New York City.” Fast forward a few years and Zirin-Brown was living in Seattle, working as an actor. Amber Star Merkens followed her dream and became a principle dancer for New York City’s prestigious Mark Morris Dance Group. “Amber encouraged me to come to New York, so we collaborated on developing an act;” Zirin-Brown said, “an artful, campy cabaret show inspired by neoburlesque. We
IF YOU GO
What: Lady Rizo When: 7 pm, Sunday, April 16 Where: Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street Cost: $20 in advance, $25 on the door Tickets: www. coastarts.org put our own spin on it and called it caburlesque. I was the singer and emcee, the dancers did striptease cabaret. They were called the Assettes. It was 2005. We were coming from a shoestring budget and did all of our own promotion. We started in real holes, gradually
moving to bigger houses. We finally landed in large, 600-seat venues.” Lady Rizo evolved from Zirin-Brown’s early collaborations with other talented performers, which led to doing work on her own. A performance artist, comedienne, singer, composer and actor, Lady Rizo garnered critical acclaim as recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship. Her original pieces have been showcased at the Public Theatre in New York,
where she was a resident artist for three years at Joe’s Pub. The intimate, 200-seat venue is a favorite among world-class performers such as Adele. She received rave reviews three years in a row at the Assembly Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, winning the inaugural Time Out London and Soho Theatre Award, and the 2013 London Cabaret Award. This opened the opportunity for world touring, appearing at London’s Leister Square Theatre and the
Sydney Festival in Australia, where she was nominated for a 2013 Helpmann award. Lady Rizo created the six-piece house band and was mistress of ceremonies for the popular New York City supper club The Darby, performing alongside musical luminaries such as John Mayer, Leann Rimes and Bruno Mars. She is also a Grammy winner for a 2010 collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma on the Holiday album Songs of Joy and Peace. Her compositions have been
featured worldwide and she has recorded with Moby, Reggie Watts and CocoRosie. She released her debut album, “Violet,” in 2013 and will be releasing “Red, White, and Indigo” this year. Zirin-Brown says Lady Rizo is her alter ego and lives in many different decades. This is evidenced in her multiple styles of music, incorporating the influences of soul, jazz, blues, funk and rock in her compositions with heart-stopping vocals. She can timelessly belt out old standard cover tunes and make them sound soulful, edgy, yet contemporary. The show in Newport will reflect Zirin-Brown’s thoughts through Lady Rizo. Fears and hopes on motherhood. The polarization of America. She plans to deliver a deeply personal musical eulogy unpacking her feelings for the country she was born in, using her trademark humor, wit and soaring voice. Backed by acclaimed cellist, guitarist and composer Yair Evnine and other guest musicians, she will feature songs from “Red, White, and Indigo.” Lady Rizo’s Sunday, April 16, performance at the Newport Performing Arts Center is presented by New Vision Arts, which is dedicated to producing works in the fields of music, theatre, dance, literature, media arts, performance art, the visual arts and multidisciplinary works. Tickets can be purchased online for $20 or available at the door for $25. For tickets and other information, go to www.coastarts. org/events/2017/04/red,-whiteindigo.

NOW is the time The Oregon Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) will host its annual conference in Newport this weekend, oering participants the chance to develop skills in political activism. The conference, which has the theme “Learning & Living Intersectional Feminism,â€? will take place at the Best Western Agate Beach Inn, 3019 Oregon Coast Highway. On Saturday, April 8, there will be a preconference happy hour in the Rookies Lounge from 5 to 7 pm. On Sunday, April 9, the conference will kick into high gear with a keynote address from Banafsheh Violet Nazari, a lawyer whose practice focuses on workplace discrimination. Nazari’s talk will focus on issues of intersectionality within the legal community. Based on her experiences as an immigrant woman lawyer, Nazari will examine the burden of working towards equity while being subject to systems of oppression. The conference will also feature a workshop from Franki Trujillo-Dalbey on “Intersectionality in Our Work, Activism & Daily Interactionsâ€? and a panel discussion entitled “How to Create Big Change Through Grassroots Activism.â€? The conference is open to all. For more information or to register, go to www. eventbrite.com and search for “NOWâ€?.

Curl up and start sleuthing, with Lincoln City Reads By Gretchen Ammerman For the TODAY
Every generation seems to have a children’s book about portals to hidden realms: a hedge hiding a secret garden, a closet that leads to a world filled with talking animals, an ephemeral train stop for a school devoted entirely to churning out wizards. But as any youngster who has have to peel a Harry Potter series novel out of the hands of their parents can attest, the desire for books that transform the world into something less mundane doesn’t stop at childhood. More proof of this can be found in the popularity of “Mr. Penumbra’s 24Hour Bookstore” by Robin Sloan, the novel Driftwood Public Library chose for its inaugural Lincoln City Reads program, with events beginning Sunday, April 23, and ending Saturday, April 29. Not just a best seller, the novel has been a popular selection for book clubs. “I’ve done events all over the country,” Sloan said. “The best honor was when my book was chosen for Rhode Island Reads. Rhode Island is so small they just pick one book for the entire state.” The week of events planned by the Driftwood Public Library might have eclipsed the honor of being a state book, however. “I was floored when I saw the schedule,” Sloan said. “It looks fantastic, like a really cool and actually very
interesting and scintillating lineup of stuff.” As much as practicable, the event planners chose speakers and activities related to the premise of the novel, which centers on a man who, unable to find employment in his chosen field, takes a job covering the night shift at an eccentric bookstore in San Francisco. His curiosity about the books in and the visitors to the store lead him to a secret society centered around book publishing itself. The novel’s hero and an eclectic cast of characters, including the bookstore’s elderly owner and a young programmer who works at Google, attempt to use modern technology to find the clue to solving an ancient mystery. High jinks ensue. Finding clues will be the focus of the first Lincoln City Reads event. Beginning Sunday, April 23, visitors to the library will receive the first clue for a city-wide scavenger hunt that will continue through Saturday. On Tuesday, April 25, at 6:30 pm, author, Freemason, professional technologist and amateur cryptographer Erik Arneson will lecture on fictional secret societies. He will cover the Rosicrucians, the Priory of Sion, the Illuminati and the Taxil Hoax, as well as novels by Dan Brown, Umberto Eco, Robert Anton Wilson and others. Arneson will give another talk at the library on Wednesday, April 26, at 2 pm, on how computers have changed cryptography, followed by a discussion of how mechanical and electronic

computers affected cryptography during World War I and World War II. He will also talk about the codes in “Mr. Penumbra” and how feasible it would be to create an uncrackable one. That evening, at 6 pm, the library will host its annual Community Days family night concert, with Cello Bop! featuring cellist Gideon Freudman. Sloan credits curiosity with giving him a comfort with computers that does not match his skill level, but instead led to a successful novel. “I’m a huge nerd,” he said. “I’ve always been very interested and enthusiastic about computers, but I would not be a candidate for a programming job at Google or anywhere in Silicon Valley; to them I would have the skills of a 13 year old. But that’s enough to experiment, learn things and have fun with it. For me the benefit of that enthusiasm is that it has led me to some interesting stories that I don’t think I would have known about or even imagined otherwise.” Any thirst for answers about Sloan and his novel can be quenched when he appears for an author talk and book

signing at the Lincoln City Cultural Center on Friday, April 28, at 7 pm. Entry will be first-come, first-served, and seating limited to about 175. Finally, on the morning of Saturday, April 29, there will be a special showing of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at the Bijou Theatre. The free screening begins at 11 am at 1624 NE Hwy. 101. If you haven’t yet read the book, the library has copies for let and sale. “For a while we had a waiting list,” said Library Director Kirsten BrodbeckKenney. “But lately we usually have a few copies available. The basic idea for the events is that, with everyone reading the same book, it can work as an icebreaker and make it even more fun for people that attend.” For more information, go to driftwoodlib. org or the Driftwood Public Library Facebook page. Any questions about the project can be directed to Ken Hobson at khobson@lincolncity.org, or at 541-9961242. The library is located at 801 SW Hwy. 101, on the second floor of the City Hall building.

LASSES MORE, IN MANZANITA Heartfelt ballads and foot-stomping songs will fill Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts this Sunday, April 9, when Portland-based musician Kathryn Claire returns for another concert alongside Amsterdam folk duo The Lasses. Claire met The Lasses, Margot Merah and Sophie
Janna, at a 2013 singing session in Amsterdam. Sharing a love for harmony singing and storytelling through music, they soon realized that together they could deliver both with equal measures of joy and musicality. Claire helped bring The Lasses to the Pacific Northwest for their first US tour in the spring of 2015.
The following fall, The Lasses booked a tour of concerts in churches and folk venues across The Netherlands. Sunday’s concert will feature songs from the trio’s first album, recorded live in Utrecht after their 2016 European tour. A deeply personal and heartfelt work filled with original and traditional
songs, the album highlights each woman’s unique style of songwriting and singing while weaving in the trio’s highly acclaimed three-part harmonies and engaging performances on guitar, fiddle and bohdrán. The concert will begin at 7 pm at 594 Laneda Avenue, with tickets $12 at the door.
Tickets are now on sale for the Rainspout Music Festival, which will see the Yachats Commons come alive with musical acts, dancing, jam sessions and a hoedown from Friday, April 28, through Sunday, April 30. Designed to celebrate spring as it passes into summer, the Rainspout festival will begin on Friday with a jazzed up night of music, dinner and dancing, pairing food from The Drift Inn with performances from the Barbara Dzuro Jazz Quartet and the BiondiRussel Band. Saturday’s daytime lineup includes performances from Mike and Carleen McCornack, The New Folksters, Terry Trenholm, Barb Turrill and Morgan
Spiess, alongside workshops, a sing-a-long and all-day jam session. On Saturday evening, audiences will be treated to the sounds of Betty and The Boy, and the charming finesse of The East West International Project. Sunday features a morning jam session, a workshop and a performance and hoedown with the Fiddlin’ Big Sue Band. The Rainspout festival is sponsored by the nonprofit Polly Plumb Productions and the City of Yachats. Tickets are available at www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/2900737. For more information, go to rainspout.org, e-mail events@ yachats.org or call 541-9686089.

at Carnegie Hall. Since then he has performed throughout the United States and Europe, giving recitals at such venues as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Weill Recital Hall. He has appeared as soloist with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Hartford Symphony and the Mozart, Bach and Brahms Society Orchestras at Harvard. He has performed world premieres of concerto and chamber works by Ellen Taafe Zwilich, Toshio Hosokawa and Rivers Cuomo, the lead vocalist of Weezer. Kim received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard and a
