Alaska Salmon Penne with Green Beans and Vinaigrette 1 package (12 ounces) whole wheat penne (or other pasta) 1/2 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and halved Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 Tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 3 Tablespoons olive oil (divided) 12 ounces Alaska Salmon, fresh, thawed or frozen Salt and Black pepper Garnish: Lemon wedges and Sprigs of thyme Directions: Cook the pasta in boiling water for about 8 minutes, or according to package instructions, until al dente. Add the green beans to the water during the last 3 to 4 minutes of cooking time. Drain pasta and beans, reserving 3 tablespoons of the cooking liquid, then return pasta, beans and reserved liquid to the pan. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, thyme leaves, garlic salt and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. While pasta cooks, rinse any ice glaze from frozen Alaska Salmon under cold water; pat dry with paper towel. Heat a heavy nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Brush both sides of salmon with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Place salmon in heated skillet and cook, uncovered, about 3 to 4 minutes, until browned. Shake pan occasionally to keep fish from sticking. Turn salmon over; cover pan tightly and reduce heat to medium. Cook an additional 6 to 8 minutes for frozen salmon or 3 to 4 minutes for fresh/thawed fish. Cook just until fish is opaque throughout. Break salmon into large chunks (removing skin, if any); add to pasta. Cook and stir gently over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with lemon wedges and thyme sprigs.

Sounds stitchin’ Fabric art from around the world will be on display at the Yachats Commons this Sunday, Aug. 23, as the World Painters Challenge exhibit comes to town. The exhibit contains 90 pieces of fabric art, each of which interprets the work of a master painter. There will be three quilt interpretations of each painter’s work — one
each from the U.S., France and Japan, all roughly 20 inches square. Several of the fabric artists will be on hand at Sunday’s event, which is hosted by the Yachats Academy of Arts & Sciences. The exhibit started traveling in 2013 and has been shown in Japan and France. The Yachats showing will be the
first in the U.S. Yachats resident Ruth Bass has a piece in the show and has been responsible for bringing the show to the academy. The show will run from 1 to 5 pm in the multi-purpose room of the Yachats Commons at 441 Hwy. 101 N. For more details, go to www.yachatsacademy.org.

Artists sail into Pacific City
This weekend will see the return of the Nestucca Valley Artisans Festival, with 14 artists and craftspeople displaying their work at the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City. Since it began in 1992, the festival has provided rich experiences to the crowds that have visited each year to view everything from paintings, prints and sculptures to quilts, leather bags and jewelry. As well as browsing the arts and crafts on display, guests will get to meet and chat with the artists and craftspeople that made them. Participating artisans work in the Nestucca Valley or nearby communities, such as Cloverdale, Hebo, Lincoln City, Neskowin, Otis, Rose Lodge and Pacific City. Each of the participating artisans has donated a piece to be raffled off during the event, with proceeds helping the group continue its support of arts and art education in the communities and schools of the Nestucca Valley. Examples

of previous contributions include the purchase of art supplies in local public schools, salaries for invited lecturers at art workshops, subscriptions to art-oriented periodicals for local libraries and schools, an annual art prize at the Tillamook County Fair, cash donations to the Community Art Project and the donation in 2012 of a painted mural to the
public library in Pacific City. The festival will run from 10 am to 5 pm at the Kiawanda Community Center, 34600 Cape Kiwanda Drive, Pacific City. Admission is free, parking is plentiful and refreshments will be on offer. For more information, call Julius Jortner at 503-9657016 or the Kiawanda center at 503-965-7900.
The latest Spotlight Show at Newport’s Yaquina Art Association Gallery will see paintings and photography hanging side by side in an exhibit that celebrates color in all its forms. “Life In Changing Color,” which opens on Saturday, Aug. 22, will feature paintings by Charlotte Carter and photographs by Ted Crego. Carter, who holds a BS in Design from the University of Michigan, has been an artist most of her life, having worked as a technical illustrator, a graphic artist, a book illustrator and designer. Working in watercolors and
pastels, she strives to capture the fleeting effects of light in her depictions of fruits, flowers and ocean scenes. A longtime member of the Yaquina Art Association, she teaches an ongoing Pastel Class at the Newport Visual Arts Center on Thursday mornings from 10 am to noon. Ted Crego is currently retired and having fun exploring his hobby of photography with his wife, Kim. “My photo interests are varied, but I enjoy finding images that others may overlook,” he said, “such as patterns and macro shots.
Lately, I have been doing more panoramas and ‘high dynamic range’ photos. There is always something new to learn in photography including all of the software programs.” Crego is president of Yaquina Art Association Photographers, which meets on the first and third Mondays at 7 pm in the Newport Visual Arts Center. For more information, go to YAAPhotographers.org. The Spotlight Show will run through Sept. 8, available to view daily from 11 am to 4 pm at the gallery, 789 NW Beach Drive.

Pull some strings to get to the Yachats Bluegrass Jamboree By Gretchen Ammerman For the TODAY
O
The Bad Weeds • Photo by Gretchen Ammerman
The Banana Slugs
n a recent Saturday afternoon, visitors to the Smelt Sands State Park, who probably pulled over for a simple pit-stop, were treated to an impromptu outdoor performance by the Bad Weeds, a local band who were pickin’ a few tunes as part of a photo shoot to promote this weekend’s Yachats Bluegrass Jamboree. The three-day event, held at the Yachats Commons and the Yachats Farmstore, will include bluegrass, beer and… banana slugs. Fans of the Banana Slugs know them as a costume-clad kid-centric band made up of musical educators, rather than slimy garden pests and trail travelers. “I saw them when they played on the coast a few years ago and I thought they were great,” said Cicely Harris, owner of the Yachats Farmstore. “I’ve stayed in touch with band member Doug Dirt to see if I could get them to come back; it only took me three years.” The Slugs kick off the weekend of music at 5 pm at the Yachats Commons. Following the Slugs are the Bad Weeds, who are more geared toward an adult crowd but can be enjoyed by kids too. The Weeds, who appeared on the big stage at the 2015 Lincoln County Fair, include current Yachats Mayor Ron Brean, who says their music can be described as “Americana with a bit of the blues.” The evening is being sponsored by friends of the Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program.

Although entrance is free, donations to the YYFAP will be gratefully accepted. On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Jamboree gets hopping at the Yachats Farmstore. The event is the unofficial kickoff for their new 10-barrel brewery. “This is the first year of the jamboree,” Cicely said. “We decided to do it to celebrate finally getting our brewery online by having some friends from the valley that are bluegrass musicians come out. We’ve been trying to get them to do it for a while, and the stars finally aligned for all of them to come on the same weekend.” The music starts at 1 pm with Monroe Street, an eclectic Americana band from Eugene. Following at 5 pm will be Portland-based duo Slipshod, who play bluegrass, folk, and Americana, including some original songs. The small band has a full sound as both members manage to sing and harmonize while using a wide array of instruments, including, dobro, banjo, guitar and mandolin. “Technically I’m not a mandolin player,” said band member Steve Blanchard, “but I know enough to be dangerous. Our strength is picking good classic songs and giving them a bluegrass feel. Sometimes we’ll throw in a cowboy song. Mostly we like taking a song and playing it in a coherent manner, but in a slipshod way.” The band has performed at the Farmstore roughly a half dozen times already, and while they invited themselves for their first performance, they now get asked to come back and are always happy to do so. “Yachats is a killer town,”
Blanchard said. “The Farmstore has a nice laid back vibe where both locals and visitors can hang out, have some good food and beverages, and enjoy some good tunes.” The final band of the evening, taking the floor at 7:30 pm, is Off the Cuff from Portland. “Having music at the store is something we love and enjoy,” said Harris. “We’ve had live music quite a few times since we’ve been open. We usually clear the displays out of the main room, and we have a lot of barrels we use as tables; they are easy to roll them where you want them. We can fit about 50 people. We also now have a greenhouse on the side of the building and we can sit people there and outside. For this event we are definitely going to expand the seating as much as we can. We’re basically going to open the whole place up.” The final act, on Sunday at 4 pm, is the three-piece bluegrass and honky-tonk band Tenbrook from Portland, featuring Josh Cole of the Josh Cole Bluegrass Podcast. All live music at the Farmstore is also free, so don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy some great music without spending a lot of money — or having to tour rest areas hoping to chance upon for another free concert. The Yachats Commons is located at 441 Hwy. 101. For more details about the event at the Yachats Commons, call 541-547-4599. The Yachats Farmstore is located at 348 Hwy. 101. SMELL THE SOIL, DIG THE MUSIC The annual Yachats River Valley Farm Tour will return this Sunday, Aug. 23, giving participants the chance to explore seven working farms, buy fresh produce and enjoy live music. The “up the river” folks use their land to raise everything from goats and llamas to bees and peacocks, with a range of products including honey, vegetables, beef, fresh goat and cow milk, eggs, flowers and cacti, fruit and baked goods. For the third consecutive year, the Newport Community Drum Circle will provide the soundtrack to the event, with a special country-style family drum circle at the final farm on the tour —The Ranch on the South Fork River Road. The working cattle ranch, owned by a classical musician who is also a hand drummer, is nestled between national forest and the river, with a pond and a large shady front yard. In case of rain, there is even a barn to retreat to. It’s a laid back day in the country and everyone is invited to participate in the all ages drum circle; no musical experience is needed and they’ll even lend you a drum if you don’t have one.

Have a day to treasure at Newport’s Buccaneer Rampage Pirates can be slippery customers — and never more so than during Newport’s annual Buccaneer Rampage Mud Obstacle Race, when scallywags will hit the skids on a course coated with extra-slick mud. The race, which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 22, is the only one of its kind on the Central Oregon Coast and part of a fast-growing, nationwide trend of mud running. “This race is designed to be fun and challenging while appealing to a wide range of participants. It’s not your typical 5K race,” said Mike Cavanaugh, sports coordinator for Newport Parks and Recreation. “It’s more of an adventure for everyone participating.” In addition to the muddy terrain, runners will have to tackle a host of obstacles, including wall climbs, mud
crawls and cargo nets. “Each year we’ve tried to add to the previous year’s race,” Cavanaugh said. “We hope to have some new obstacles that everyone will like.” This year’s Buccaneer Rampage begins at 11 am at Newport Municipal Airport and runs until 3 pm. Runners can tackle the course alone or as part of a motley crew. Registration is $40 online at www.BuccaneerRampage. com until Thursday, Aug. 20. Race-day registration is $45 and, because pirates are a spontaneous bunch, will remain open right up to 15 minutes before the race starts. “If you don’t want to race, come out and cheer on the racers,” Cavanaugh said. “Spectating is free and it’s fun to watch everyone get dirty!” There will be music, food

and a beer garden throughout the day, as well as prizes on offer for the best male and female pirate costume. All proceeds from the event will go towards the youth scholarship program at the Newport Recreation Center, which gives children from economically
disadvantaged households the opportunity to participate in a number of fantastic recreation programs. Newport Parks and Recreation is also in need of volunteers for this event. To help, email M.Cavanaugh@ NewportOregon.gov or call 541-574-5453.

WANT TO STRETCH YOURSELF? Registration is now open for the fall season at the Newport School of Artistic Movement, which offers a wide array of dance classes for students of all levels, aged three to adult. Director Nancy Mittleman has been training dancers from preschool to professional for more than 40 years and has studied with such luminaries as Martha Graham, Charles Weidman and Leslie Watanabe. Students from the school have gone on to study and perform at Juilliard in New York City, the San Francisco Ballet and the San Diego Dance Theater to name a few. Mittleman’s classes in contemporary ballet include studies in ballet, modern, jazz and African dance. She is joined by Assistant Director Erika Sugrue, a dancer with 20 years’ experience who is now in her
twelfth year of teaching. The school’s classes are designed to increase grace, flexibility, balance and strength, drawing not only from ballet, modern, jazz and African dance but also from Pilates and yoga. “Classes are designed to develop the student’s technical skills,” Mittleman said, “and spark their creativity through a process of exploration and discovery.” Tina Watanabe will be teaching a “day’s end” yoga class designed for cooling down and centering dancers and nondancers alike from a hard day’s work. Mittleman is known for the technical quality and range of dance styles she teaches as well as her holistic approach to dance, integrating science, art, literature, music, math and
much more into her lessons and choreography. “All classes include improvisations or ‘dance games,’” she said, “which increase students’ awareness of the power of body language, while enriching and developing their creativity, dramatic style and choreographic skills.” Additionally, improvisation exercises develop students’ problem-solving and leadership skills as well as their ability to work collaboratively. Variations from famous chorographers, partnering, counterbalance techniques and lifting are also incorporated into the curriculum. Students who register before August 30 receive a 10-percent discount on their first month’s tuition. For more information or to register, call 541-961-2316 or email pdedance@msn.com.

...at the Oregon Coast Community College open house Oregon Coast Community College will throw open the doors to its Lincoln City campus this Monday, Aug. 24, with an open house to help prospective students get a handle on all that’s being offered in the coming academic year. Among the staff members in attendance will be Chris Spaulding, director of Career and Technical Education programs and the college’s Aquarium Science Program, along with College President Dr. Birgitte Ryslinge. They’ll be answering questions about OCCC’s new two-year business transfer degree, coming to the Lincoln City center beginning this fall. “This new degree offers students the chance to earn the first two years of a four-year degree here on the coast,” said
Dave Price, OCCC’s director of small business development and community education. “For other students, the two-year degree may be just what they need to ramp up their career skills and find that better job. Others simply have a passion for business, and for learning, and this degree program will deliver for all of these types of students.” Price said the open house will feature OCCC staff who will be on hand to talk about financial aid and the free placement tests that the college is offering all month long. “For students considering starting or returning to college in the Fall term, it’s important they come and see an advisor soon, and financial aid applications are due very soon for Fall classes,” he said. “This open house is a great opportunity for those folks
getting going late in the process to have all of their questions answered, and start moving forward.” The open house will also feature information about the college’s other associate and transfer degrees, plus its nursing, medical assistant and criminal justice programs, along with GED and ESOL offerings. “We’ll also have information about OCCC’s innovative new Early College Program,” Price said, “which will offer college-ready high school juniors and seniors from throughout the county with the opportunity to take up to three college courses — completely tuition free.” Teachers of a variety of Fall term community education and small business classes will be on hand during the afternoon

Love to write? Whether it’s the story of your life, a blog about food or the next Great American Novel, writing can be a tough process to get started. But there’s one word that can help aspiring writers of all stripes put pen to paper or fingers to their keyboard — Yachats. For it is in this picturesque town, the Gem of the Oregon Coast, that writer, publisher and educator Matt Love will lead a one-day “Getting the Writing Going” nonfiction workshop on Saturday, Oct. 10. Love, the author/editor of 14 books about Oregon and columnist for Oregon Coast TODAY, will help participants shape and guide the beginning process of becoming a writer and present options for writers to publish their work. Participants will experiment with different and innovative techniques to define an editorial
voice and purpose for various forms of nonfiction writing. The workshop will be held in the greenhouse of the Yachats Farm Store, which was recently named one of the seven wonders of the Oregon Coast by Travel Oregon. “I believe it is essential for all aspiring writers to meet other aspiring writers in a relaxed workshop setting with real writing outcomes, and I can’t think of a better place than Yachats and the Farm Store,” said Love. “It will be a great place to write.” The workshop, which is limited to 12 students, will run from 9:30 am to 4 pm and costs $105 per person. To sign up, email Love at nestuccaspitpress@gmail.com or call 503-812-1524. For more information on the Yachats Farm Store, contact jennifer@yachatsfamstore.com
Luau in Newport Island food, refreshing beverages and live drumming will be on offer in Newport this Friday, Aug. 21, as Oceanview Senior Living hosts its annual free Community Luau. The luscious open-air luau is the company’s way of saying “Thank You” to the community. As well as food and drink, the party
will feature Polynesian log drumming by the Newport Drum Circle’s Chandler Davis, and Hula dancers. Donations to the Lincoln County Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), will be gratefully accepted. The party will run from 11 am to 2 pm at 525 NE 71st Street. For more information, call 541-574-0550.
Anyone expecting to see English heartthrob Ralph Fiennes in skintight Spandex when they turn up for the Friday, Aug. 21, screening of “Man and Superman” is in for a disappointment. But people expecting a romantic comedy, an epic fairytale and a fiery philosophical debate will get a real treat from this exhilarating reinvention of George Bernard Shaw’s witty, provocative classic, which asks fundamental questions about how we live. Fiennes plays Jack Tanner, a celebrated radical thinker and rich bachelor who seems an unlikely choice as guardian to the alluring heiress, Ann. But she takes it in her assured stride and, despite the love of a poet, she decides to marry and tame this dazzling revolutionary. Tanner, appalled by the whiff of domesticity, is tipped
off by his chauffeur and flees to Spain, where he is captured by bandits and meets The Devil. An extraordinary dream-debate, heaven versus hell, ensues. Following in hot pursuit, Ann is there when Tanner awakes, as fierce in her certainty as he is in his.
The screening is part of the National Theatre Live series, which broadcasts performances from the UK’s National Theatre onto cinema screens around the world. Friday’s screening, hosted locally by Kate Madison and Don Stein, will run from 7
to 10 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, $15.50 for adults, $12.50 for seniors and $10.50 for students, are available at www.coastarts.org, at the PAC box office or by calling 541265-ARTS (2787).
CATCH A LOAD OF THIS The annual Tuna Classic, the largest outdoor charity tournament event in the Pacific Northwest, returns to Garibaldi this Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21 and 22, drawing more than 300 anglers to the picturesque fishing village. Last year, the teams hooked 15,000 pounds of tuna, which was donated to food banks on the Northern and Central Oregon Coast. Although not required to do so, anglers often donate their ‘five biggest tuna catch’ competition winnings to the food banks; in 2014 alone, food banks received $45,000. The event starts on Friday with boats heading out at 7:30 am and returning in time for an evening social that runs until 9 pm and
is open to the public, with games and prizes on offer. Saturday is the main fishing competition, with

boats heading out at 6:30 am and coming back to dock by 5 pm, just in time for the public awards dinner and
barbecue which runs until 10 pm. “Over its 11-year history, the organization has donated more than $1 million dollars to charities on the Oregon Coast,” said event director Del Stephens. “In addition, participants and visitors spend each year more than $350,000 in the host community during the twoday event.” The Tuna Classic is also a qualifying event for the Offshore World Fishing Championships in Costa Rica, so it attracts avid anglers from all over the U.S. For more information on the Garibaldi Tuna Classic, go to www.oregontunaclassic. org. If it seems like parking is a challenge at the Lincoln City Cultural Center this Saturday, look again. What at first glance might appear to be gridlock on the front lawn is in fact the second annual Old School Classic Car Show, featuring beloved automobiles from all periods of motoring history. All classic cars dated 1985 or older are welcome at the show, which will run from 10 am to 4 pm on the center’s front lawn this Saturday, Aug. 22. Car exhibitors will receive a custom dash plaque, goodie bag and continental breakfast. Exhibitors can also get in the running for three prizes: the Chinook Winds Casino Resort Award, the People’s Choice Award and Lincoln City’s 50th Anniversary Award. Kelly Howard, glass artist at Jennifer Sears Glass Art Studio, is custom-making glass wave trophies for the event. The registration fee is $15 in advance, rising to $20 on the day of the show, with proceeds benefiting children’s programming at the cultural center. Two bands will hit the stage during the show — Lincoln City’s own Retroactive Gamma Rays, from 10 am to noon, followed
by Portland instrumental surf band The Verbtones from noon to 2:30 pm. Food options will include German sausage and corn on the cob served up by the bratwurst brigade from St. James/Santiago Episcopal Church. Enrique’s Authentic Mexican Food will be selling homemade tamales, tacos and burritos. To help cool things off, Pinguinos will offer tasty Italian flavored ice, while Strung out on Beads and Coffee serves up coffee drinks, Shirley Temples, Roy Rogers and homemade Kettlekorn. Rusty Truck Brewing will host a beer garden for guests aged 21 and older. Various vendors will have booths on the lawn and local artist Chris Wilhelm will be offering airbrush tattoos. The event will also feature a 50/50 raffle, with great prizes donated by local businesses and half the proceeds going towards children’s programs. Turn up and try out The Central Coast Chorale will kick off its new season with auditions for new singers on Sunday, Aug. 23, and Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport. “Auditions are open to anyone 14 and older with an interest in singing,” said chorale director Mary Lee Scoville. “They are done in a very non-threatening environment but are necessary to determine
vocal range, voice type, and previous musical experience.” Rehearsals will run from 2 to 4 pm on Sunday and 4 to 6 pm on Wednesday at the church, located at 227 NE 12th Street. First rehearsal for everyone and registration for returning singers is Saturday, Aug. 29, at 9:30 am at the church. The group will go through warm-ups and review music for the December concerts.
Rehearsals are generally held every other week on Saturday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center. Specific dates and policies will be reviewed during the first rehearsal. Dues are $40 per semester or $75 for the year. A limited number of scholarships are available. For more information, contact Scoville at 541-5636830.

Internationally acclaimed pianist George Winston will play his first concert at the Newport Performing Arts Center in more than a decade when he comes to the coast for a solo show on Saturday Sept. 12. Winston has attained widespread fame with the release of 13 solo piano albums including the seminal recordings “Autumn,” “December,” “Summer” and “Forest.” His latest album, “Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions 2: A Louisiana Wetlands Benefit” showcases his impressive breadth of piano styles. Inspired by the great New Orleans R&B pianists
such as Professor Longhair and Dr. John, Winston also enjoys interpreting pieces by his favorite composers — ranging from Vince Guaraldi, the Doors and Sam Cooke to Frank Zappa, John Coltrane and Taj Mahal. The Sept. 12 concert, organized by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts in partnership with coastal event company Show Sherpas, will begin at 7:30 pm at the center, 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, $45 for premium seating and $35 for general, are available at www. coastarts.org, the Newport Performing Arts Center Box
Office at 777 W Olive Street or via phone at 541-2652787. Proceeds from the concert will go toward “Entertain the Future!” a $4.3-million capital campaign to enhance and expand the performing arts center. For more information, email OCCA Executive Director Catherine Rickbone at crickbone@coastarts.org. • As an additional benefit, Winston asks concert guests to bring a can of food for Food Share of Lincoln County. A portion of CD sales from the show will be donated to the organization as well.
The INHOUSE Jazz series of concerts will continue on Sunday, Aug. 23, with an intimate performance from trombone-guitar duo Christopher Woitach and John Moak. By age 18, “Jazzy” John Moak was playing trombone with Ella Fitzgerald. He went on to build a musical résumé that includes gigs with such musical notables as Dave Brubeck, Branford Marsalis, Rosemary Clooney and Aretha Franklin. Growing up in Oklahoma he studied jazz from junior high, high school and beyond, graduating from University of Central Oklahoma. In 2005, after some time in Florida, he moved to Portland, where he has now become a wellrespected member of the thriving northwest jazz scene. Moak appears on many recordings, most recently with Chuck Israel, and has performed at the New Orleans, Newport, Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals. Christopher Woitach is a Portland jazz guitarist and composer who has played with many nationally and internationally known artists,

Spout time for some theater Newport’s Café Mundo is well known for its ability to put a little magic in a coffee cup. But patrons would be well advised to keep their eyes peeled for a dormouse in the teapot this weekend and next as the venue plays host to “Alice in Mundoland.” The latest production from Teatro Mundo, is a collection of songs, short plays and poems, drawing from the work of “Alice in Wonderland” author Lewis Carroll. Performances will take place at 6 pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from Friday, Aug. 20, to Sunday, Aug. 29. There will also be a noon matinée on Saturday, Aug. 22 Admission is free but donations are accepted.
Care to take An epic tail the chair? The Riverbend Players Community Theater in Nehalem is looking for people interested in directing three productions this winter. In October, the company will stage “Over the River and Through the Woods,” a heartwarming comedy by Joe DiPietro that focuses on generational differences in a family. The cast consists of three men and three women. The company is also looking for directors to take on two one-act readers theater productions in November
and December. “The Dear Departed,” a satire written by Stanley Houghton, has a cast of six women and four men. Meanwhile, Tom Stoppard’s “A Separate Peace,” billed as a sly, gentle dig at society’s conventions and preconceptions, calls for a cast of four women and two men. August is a great time to spot whales on the Oregon Coast, with many visitors and locals staking out positions in the idyllic town of Waldport to scour the waves for spouts. But while others might make bold claims, there’s only one place in town that can absolutely guarantee a whale spotting — the Waldport Assembly of God, where “Jonah – the Musical” is playing through Sept. 12. Dating from the 7th or 8th Century BC, the Biblical tale has been given a new twist with contemporary music and a passionate script written by Waldport composer, minister and playwright Rich Peterson. When Jonah’s betrothed
barely escapes with her life from the evil city of Nineveh, his dislike of the people there reaches a new high. When God tells him to lovingly reach out to the people he despises, Jonah promptly flees in the opposite direction. After an intense storm at sea, he is swallowed by a whale and carried beneath the waves — only to make a dramatic re-appearance after three days and three nights. The action takes place on a brand new stage with special effects including not only the famed whale — with Jonah riding inside — but also an Assyrian ship, which contains wood from the original Waldport bridge.
The 10-member cast comes from all around the Central Coast region, and includes actors ranging from 11 to 60 years old. “Jonah - The Musical” will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm through Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Waldport Assembly of God,
485 Cedar Street. Admission is free but an offering will be received at intermission, with suggested donations from $8 to $15. For more information and directions, go to www. morningstartheater.net or call 541-270-8948.

PRESENT AND CORRECT
n my first session with my new trainer, I played catch with a 10-pound medicine ball — which came with a solemn warning not to let it hit me in the nose as it would hurt; I did burpees with the Bosu ball and I walked like a gorilla — after making sure there was no one I knew in the gym. All in preparation of my upcoming birthday. My family has always made a big deal out of birthdays — parties, picnics, Hershey Park. It’s a tradition I’ve maintained even as an adult. Some years, I give myself a gift of sorts. Twenty-odd years ago, I gave up eating meat. I did it mostly for Earth-friendly reasons, but also because I thought a meatless diet would help me lose weight. Ha. What I didn’t realize was that, since I’m not a fan of most vegetables, that left me with carbs — as in pasta. See how quick you lose weight on that diet. Other years I’ve done something more fun. One year, we had my Bellagio birthday in Vegas. I came with a Bellagio wine glass, Bellagio journal and Bellagio pullover — which I found on the clearance rack at 60 percent off. Never mind that is it three times my usual size. Pullover sweatshirts are supposed to be loose, yes? For my 40th in Denver, we hosted a party on a rooftop restaurant. As it turned out, it was my farewell party to Colorado. The hubs

left town the next week to take a job here on the coast. So yes, there were a few tears that year. One year, we drove to Gig Harbor and
then on to Poulsbo where I discovered the Kingston Slug Hunt and Auction. I couldn’t stay for the hunt, but I did bid on and win a handsome hand-crafted slug that has since started my slug collection. Another year, we spent the weekend in Seattle, where we discovered my big day coincided that year with Seattle’s Hemp Fest. Suffice to say it is not my favorite weekend in the city, which has nothing to do with my feelings about weed and everything to do with crowds and people getting, as my old friend used to say, “stupid.” We escaped on the ferry to Victoria, B.C., which began to feel like a bad idea the moment I met eyes with the customs agent and understood she’d taken an instant dislike to me. Sure enough, the light turned red, and we ended up sitting in a back room for a good 20 minutes wondering what on Earth we had done. Eventually, they returned with our passports and sent us on our way. I never did figure out exactly what we had said or done that earned us such scrutiny. I think it might have been the part where she asked, “What brings you to Victoria?” And I replied, “Oh, it’s my birthday, just thought this would be a nice place to celebrate it.” Once freed, however, I had a great time and even managed to work in an interview with a ghost tracker. Three years ago, I came home from celebrating the day — as much as you can
celebrate 13 days after losing your mother — and found the keepsake urn with her cremains waiting for me on the porch. Would have liked to have the ghost tracker around then. All things considered, this has been a good year. For one, no one close to me died, which if you know my recent history of losing my dear friend, my mom, my job, my brother and my sister in the span of two years and four days, you’ll agree is notable. It was the year I signed the contract to publish my first novel, which, by my next birthday, I should be just hitting the road with. And the year I agreed to enter into developmental edits on a memoir. Fingers crossed. It was also the year I took up loom knitting and gave myself tendinitis — how embarrassing is that. And the year, I discovered adult coloring books, which I suppose should be embarrassing but isn’t. As I write this, I have several packages from girlfriends waiting to be opened and plans for a day out with the hubs. But first, this year’s gift to myself: the next session with my trainer. Maybe next year, I’ll just do something easy, like order a nice decadent cake. Lori Tobias covered the coast for The Oregonian for nine years. Bold = Minus Tides. Tide tables are for recreational use. If you’re piloting the “Costa Concordia II” in front of your college roommate’s oceanfront bungalow at Otter Crest or Cape Lookout, talk to a harbormaster. Tide info courtesy tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. If you discover a seal pup or other stranded marine animal on the beach, do not approach, touch, or pour water on the animal. Instead, call 800-452-7888. Keep dogs leashed and far from all marine mammals. Japanese Tsunami Debris Info: Information on significant marine debris sightings on the coast can be reported to the NOAA Marine Debris Program at DisasterDebris@noaa.gov.
