All of which makes it that much more heartwarming for me to see a pair of brothers whose talents have brought them together. TILLAMOOK — ‘Seen one fair, you’ve seen them all’ say the world-weary among us. You can get cotton candy anywhere and face-painters are ten-a-penny. To these summer Scrooges, we have but one thing to say — Pig-N-Ford races, baby. This signature attraction at the Tillamook County Fair is possibly the most peculiar tradition this writer has ever come across — and I say that despite hailing from a country where people chase wheels of cheese down steep hills to celebrate spring. Birding group heads south Lincoln City’s Audubon group will be heading to the south end of town this Friday, Aug. 5, and is inviting everyone to come along in search of backyard birds and summer visitors. No prior birding experience is required and binoculars and guidebooks will be provided. Part of a series of birding tours of Lincoln City Open Spaces, the excursion will take participants to Cutler City Open Space and Josephine Young State Park, both of which provide a variety of habitats for a diverse array of birds. The group will be looking for summer visitors including warblers, flycatchers and swallows as well as year-round residents of this wet woodlands habitat such as Pacific wren and woodpeckers. A brief walk through Cutler

City’s residential streets will give participants a chance to spot backyard birds as the group makes its way to Josephine Young Park, where guides will be keeping a sharp eye out for raptors, seabirds and shorebirds at Siletz Bay. This is an easy walk but participants should still dress for the weather. The group will meet at 9 am at the Cutler City Open Space sign about a quarter mile from Highway 101 at the south end of Lincoln City. Turn west onto SW 63rd Street at the ProBuild intersection. For more information, call 541-992-9720. • Mark your calendar for the upcoming Audubon field trip to Bay Ocean Sand Spit near Tillamook and for an Open Spaces Bird Hike on Saturday, Aug. 19, through Agnes Creek Natural Area.

Just when it looked as if the only thing that could get kids out into the fresh air was the prospect of capturing imaginary beasties via Pokémon Go, along comes the Newport Public Library with another option. COOKING

SCHOOL

I’ve always been a big tuna fan, specifically tuna fish salad. As a kid, any time I went out to eat, I’d likely order the tuna fish salad sandwich — even as my mom insisted on asking if it was fresh. To this day, if we are picnicking, my lunch will no doubt be a tuna salad sandwich or, if I’m stressing about my weight, tuna salad on a bed of greens. And I have to confess, I’m really not fussy — the low-rent stuff suits me fine, though I admit it really doesn’t begin to compete with the fresh caught, locally canned tuna we can buy here. Of course, in a real foodie’s eyes my fondness for tuna salad no doubt ranks right up there with my lifelong affinity for Top Ramen. But next week, I plan to treat myself to something any connoisseur of albacore tuna will appreciate: 16 gourmet recipes fresh from the glowing coals of 16 barbecue grills, each crafted by chefs showcasing their skills at the Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge. The challenge takes place on August 13 from 11 am to 3 pm at the Port of Newport next to the NOAA facility and across from the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Not only do you have the perfect setting and gourmet food, it’s a fundraiser for the Newport Food Pantry, having raised about $25,000 in the past four years. And there’ll be classic cars, too. Eight of the teams are professional. Eight are not. And one of those chefs happens to be none other than Lorna Davis, who some of you may know as queen of the hometown cheering squad, or

more formally, executive director of the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce. As it turns out, she also wears an entirely different title — that of amateur chef extraordinaire. Last month, she was named Grand Champion at the Chinook Winds Beach, Bacon and Brewfest for her recipe of bacon, crunchy peanut butter and cherry preserves on hazelnut bread. “She made this amazing bacon recipe that would knock your socks off,” said event organizer Jim Myers. “She beat the professional chefs. She’s good.”

Indeed. Last year, she won the People’s Choice prize at the Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge for her tuna tacos with secret sauce. “When people are sampling your food and you say ‘I am putting a secret sauce on it’ and they say, ‘Ohhhhh, cool,’ and then you wink at them and whisper, ‘It is actually just French dressing,’” Lorna said. Her tuna tacos featured white corn tortillas and super slaw — chopped carrots, cilantro and lime, topped with shredded cheese.

10 • oregoncoastTODAY.com • facebook.com/oregoncoasttoday • august 5, 2016

“We fried our tortillas fresh on the day of the event,” Lorna said. “The previous evening we rolled the tuna loins in taco seasoning mix and spices and added cilantro, fresh lime and garlic and sealed them in foil pouches. The day of the challenge we had to charbroil the tuna in the pouches on the charcoal grill.” Lorna learned her love of cooking from her mother. “My mom was a fabulous cook and I would watch her,” Lorna said. “She rarely used recipes and I rarely use exactly precise recipes, which is

why I am a horrible baker. If I offer you cookies, just politely say no.” And it turns out I’m not the only adult out of college still jonesing for Top Ramen. The only difference is, Lorna can even turn that into something gourmet. “It’s still part of my repertoire,” she says. “I like to put eggs in it. I put bacon in it. Spring onion. Crisp bacon or leftover pork chop gives it the pork-fried flavor. And leftovers are the king when it comes to Top Ramen. If I have a steak leftover, I’ll slice it up and put it in the soup. I add soy sauce or Teriyaki sauce and it gives it the bigger Asian kick. Your own secret sauce is what makes it special.” Of course. So about this year’s Tuna Challenge recipe. Care to let us in on the secret? “Just this — everybody loves Asian food.” That’s all we get? “Until game day. Then, we let everyone know what we are making. So, it’s not a secret for very long, just long enough.” Tickets are $15 and you can buy them at Tunabbq.com. But don’t wait too long. They cap sales at 350, and every year sells out. And as you might have guessed, I’m planning to be there. You’ll find me searching out the tuna salad. Lori Tobias covered the coast for The Oregonian for nine years. He and his wife enjoy taking vacations to places where they can photograph new subjects, with destinations including

DO YOU KNOW JACQUES? Acclaimed brothers share spotlight in Freed Gallery’s latest show Lincoln City’s Freed Gallery will open its new exhibit, “Jacques et Jacques,” this weekend, with painting demonstrations from acclaimed artists Russell and Michael Jacques. The brothers will be painting in the gallery on Saturday, Aug. 6, and Sunday, Aug. 7, surrounded by a collection of their works, ranging from paintings in various mediums to the smooth, fluid stainless steel and bronze sculptures for which Russell is known around the world. Born and raised in Vermont, both brothers studied art in Boston before embarking on divergent careers that eventually led each of them to the West Coast, where they continue to work to this day. Russell received his BFA from Boston University and completed postgraduate studies at Westfield State College for Massachusetts teacher certification. After spending 16 years in the public school system, he launched his full-time career as a sculptor and painter. His technical training helped make a name for himself in the painting and sculpting world, where he is famed for his ability to bring viewers closer to an understanding of his medium. He designs his outdoor sculptures to be an integral and complementary part of the surrounding architecture, creating pieces that are elegant, delicate and soothing. Russell approaches his paintings in much the same way as he designs his sculpture, with an emphasis on line, form and quality. His bold use of color is balanced by unique compositions and movement within each piece. He has been listed in “Who’s Who In American Art” for more than two decades and has exhibited at institutions including the National Academy of Design, Allied Artists of America and the

Audubon Society in New York City. His sculptures can be found in prominent museums, corporate and public art collections throughout the United States and Canada, as well as installations in New Zealand, Mexico, Holland, England and Nova Scotia. Russell now lives in Oregon, where he paints overlooking the Pacific Ocean from his sky-high studio. Meanwhile, Michael began his formal art education at Boston University’s School of Fine Arts in 1967, where he earned a bachelor’s degree before joining the U.S. Army and serving for two years as an illustrator.

He returned to New England, and in 1971 received a master’s degree from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, Connecticut. Throughout his long career, Michael has received widespread praise for his paintings, etchings and serigraphs. While teaching drawing and painting at Boston’s Emmanuel College, he appeared in more than 40 one-man exhibitions. He has been represented in more than 125 national art shows, and his work appears in permanent collections in institutions including the Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian’s National Collection, Virginia’s Chrysler Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

In 1980, Michael published “Images of Age,” a collection of Goya-esque drawings that capture the solitude of aging among the elderly in New England nursing homes. “Being an artist requires more than merely being a committed observer,” he said. “It requires an ability to record the feelings that image awakens.” The book was nominated for the American Book Award for Original Art and is now being revised and republished by Creative Storytellers, the publishing division of The Endangered Child Initiative. Michael loves painting the personalities of old cars and trucks and is also very fond of dogs, which make an appearance in many of his works. While his work continues to appear in art galleries on both coasts, Michael now divides his time between Oregon and Southern California where he teaches drawing and painting. “Jacques et Jacques” will run through Aug. 26 at the Freed Gallery, 6119 SW Hwy. 101. Michael and Russell Jacques will be on hand to demonstrate their painting techniques from noon to 5 pm on Saturday, Aug. 6, and Sunday, Aug. 7.

PIG

TILLAMOOK COUNTY FAIR BRINGS HOME THE BACON IN ITS 125TH YEAR Ahhh, the sights and sounds of the county fair. Cotton candy, face-painting, the carnival rides and — wait, does the dude on that buggy have pig under his arm? Yes he does, because in addition to a host of traditional fair attractions, the event that fills the Tillamook County Fairgrounds this week is home to the world-famous Pig-NFord races. The unique event sees intrepid racers compete for the coveted title by racing their vintage Model T Fords around the track while clasping a good-sized sow under their arm. The Pig-N-Fords began as a lark, when two farmers were chasing a runaway pig in their ramshackle rides. They decided it would be a fun event for the county fair, which hosted its first race with 10 cars in 1925. Some of those same cars, passed down through families or sold to close friends, are still on the track today. Even this long history makes the Pig-N-Ford races a mere whippersnapper when compared to

the Tillamook County Fair itself, which is celebrating its 125 year of family-friendly fun, with a slate of live music, horse racing, carnival activities, livestock and a demolition derby. This year’s music line-up includes performances from country band A Thousand Horses; American pop and country music duo The Bellamy Brothers; and soft rock group Little River Band as well as roots music from Cascade Rye and more rock from Beth Willis. The fair runs from Wednesday, Aug. 10, through, Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds, 4603 3rd Street. Daily admission is $10 for adults or $6 for seniors and children aged 6 to 11. Kids aged five and under get in free. On opening day from 10 am to 3 pm, kids 15 and under get in for free with two cans of food. Public parking is $5 per day or $10 per day for premium. Guests large and small are invited to check out the latest exhibit at the Newport Visual Arts Center, as “Fairy Woodland” opens to the public this week The show features small, multi-media fairy houses created by John Curtis Crawford and Bridget Wolfe — caretakers of The Enchanted World of Fairy Woodland, located between Newport and Toledo. The couple will be on hand to talk about their work at the exhibit’s opening reception, which runs from 5 to 7 pm on Friday, Aug. 5. According to the artists, each fairy house begins with the discovery of a twig that shouts, “Choose me to be in a Fairy House!” Other raw materials are selected for their personality and energy. Over the years, Crawford and Wolfe have developed more than 1,300 fairy houses, with Crawford doing the building while Wolfe interprets the materials and writes the stories for each house. They regularly hear back from customers from around the world about how the houses have brought inspiration to their homes and gardens. “Part of how I arrived at building fairy houses was through what I know of masks,” Crawford said. “The Northwest coast Indians, as well as numerous other tribal people throughout the world, composed the design of a mask to carry the spirit energy of the creature they would like to become.” Crawford and Wolfe set up Fairy Woodland in 2002, after moving to Oregon from the Sherman Oaks area in Los Angeles. Crawford began

his career as a puppeteer at the age of 12 and has been working in the arts and entertainment industry for most of his life. He has designed and constructed magical creatures and miniature habitats for stage, television and movies. Wolfe is a teacher, writer, storyteller, personal coach and guide who holds master’s

degrees in English and clinical psychology. She has taught and run groups in shamanism in the United States, England and Ireland. Hosted by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, “Fairy Woodland” will be on display through Oct. 1, available to view from noon to 4 pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

ART BLOOMS IN

TOLEDO

First Weekend will return to Toledo this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7, giving artists the chance to show off their new work in studios and galleries throughout town. Visitors to the Yaquina River Museum of Art can take a tour of the local watershed by viewing the Yaquina Traveling Exhibit — a collection of 25 oil paintings painted on location and paired with interpretive materials. Located at 151 NE Alder Street, the museum will be open from 11 am to 5 pm both days, with light refreshments on offer. Across the street, oil painter Michael Gibbons will be showcasing “Rose Cottage,” a scene of warmth and timeless beauty that evokes memories of English thatched roof cottages with entryways surrounded in flowers. “Rose Cottage” by Michael Gibbons Gibbons’ gallery, at 140 NE Alder Street, will be open from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday, with Oregon wine and cheese on offer to guests. Just around the corner, fellow oil painter Ivan Kelly will be displaying several of his maritime oil paintings, along with some of his works depicting big game in the “A Wintering Sun” by Ivan Kelly Rocky Mountains. Ivan Kelly Studio-Gallery, located at 207 East Graham Street, will be open from 11 am to 5pm on Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. Meanwhile, on Main Street, Impressions Pacific gallery will be displaying the photography of Angela Lehrbass including her recent work, “Sylvia,” depicting a local fishing vessel. On the coast and in the house The INHOUSE Jazz series will continue on Sunday, Aug. 7, with a performance from pianist Steve Christofferson, saxophonist David Evans and vocalist Annie Averre at a private home in Siletz. The show will feature original works, jazz and Latin classics and favorite selections from the artists’ recordings. Christofferson performs in clubs and jazz festivals around the world and is best known for accompanying Grammynominated vocalist Nancy King. He toured Europe with the Alan Jones Sextet and performed in China with Mia Nicholson. He plays piano with exemplary depth and warmth, and creates his signature sound by doubling on melodica, which he makes a surprisingly poignant tool for improvisation as well as for lead lines. Evans began playing professionally around the Southeast in his early teens. A scholarship brought him to New Orleans in 1984, where he played with national acts like Johnny

Mathis, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops, The Temptations and many others. A resident of Portland since 1994, he has performed or recorded with artists including Dan Balmer, Mel Brown, Randy Porter and The Portland Chamber Orchestra. Averre performs as a featured artist in clubs, concerts and festivals, with a musical repertoire including originals and standards that cross musical eras and genres. Currently living in Portland, she spends the rest of her time performing solo guitar gigs, singing with jazz groups and providing opportunities for students of the performing arts. The Aug. 7 concert will begin at 2:30 pm. Admission is by a suggested donation of $15 to $30, with all profits donated locally in support of music education. For reservations and directions, call 360-606-7136 or email aaverre@hotmail. com. For more information, go to inhousejazz.org.

Rob Tobias and The Northwest Express

Get on board, in Yachats Rob Tobias and The Northwest Express will take to the stage in Yachats this Sunday, Aug. 7, for the latest in the town’s First Sunday series of free outdoor concerts. A storytelling songwriter, Tobias blends many styles of music to create a sound that appeals to all ages. Whether performing with a group, solo, or as an

arts educator, he projects enthusiasm, energy and spirit, including his audiences in the performance through percussion jams, sing-alongs and spontaneous imagination. Tobias, who has recorded six albums since 1994, brings folk, blues, reggae, country and Jewish roots music together with a stamp of originality that is both

familiar and distinctive. The free show will be held from 1 to 4 pm in the picnic shelter at the Yachats Commons, 441 Hwy. 101 N. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. The concert series is sponsored by The City of Yachats and the nonprofit Polly Plumb Productions.

Give your take on Jake

Alan Alda in “Jake’s Women”

Lincoln City’s Theatre West is looking for eight people to fill the roles in “Jake’s Women,” the first in an upcoming series of plays written by Neil Simon. The comedy tells the story of Jake, a novelist who is more successful with fiction than with life. As the play opens, Jake faces a crisis revealed through conversations — some imaginary and some real — with the women in his life. They include a revered first wife, who was killed years earlier in an accident; his daughter, who is recalled as a child but is now a young woman; his boisterous and bossy sister; an opinionated analyst; his current wife, who is planning to leave him; and his current lady friend.

22 • oregoncoastTODAY.com • facebook.com/oregoncoasttoday • august 5, 2016

Director Bonnie Ross is looking for one male to play Jake, a role that Alan Alda originated in the Broadway production. Ross also needs seven females to play the women in Jake’s life, with roles available for actors aged from 12 to 60 and beyond. The play will run from October 20 through November 12, with call at 6:30 pm every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There will also be a 2 pm Sunday matinée on a date to be determined after the play is cast. Auditions will be held at 7 pm on Sunday and Monday, August 7 and 8, at the theatre, located at 3536 Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City. For more information, go to www. theatrewest.com or call 541-994-5663.

Learn a BIT, with Reptileman The “On your mark, get set ... READ!” series will continue at Lincoln County libraries this Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 10 and 11, with a visit from Richard Ritchey, aka: Reptileman. Ritchey is a huge favorite with kids across Oregon, offering an up-close encounter with a host of reptilian creatures. His science-based shows are always highly entertaining and educational, featuring unique insights and observations delivered with a great sense of humor. His range of reptiles will include a king cobra, rattlesnake, monitor lizard and — perhaps — an alligator snapping turtle. Reptileman will appear in Waldport, Newport and Lincoln City on Wednesday, Aug 10, performing at 10 am at Waldport Public Library,
