Crabbers feeling the pinch
O
ne of the upsides to winter on the Oregon Coast is the prospect of enlivening just about every meal with plentiful, delicious Dungeness crab. Crab cocktail and crab cakes go without saying, but inventive coasties will add their state crustacean to just about anything; lasagna, enchiladas, you bet. Crab curry? I guarantee you someone has given it a try. So when a low meat yield
led to a delay of at least two weeks in the start of this year’s commercial Dungeness season, coastal foodies had to put their culinary plans on hold. But the delay is far more serious for crabbers and their families. Coming on top of a less-than-stellar shrimp season, the delay has left many of the coast’s breadwinners in a ďŹ nancial crisis, right on the cusp of the holiday season. Taunette Dixon of Newport

Rolled Christmas Sugar Cookies 2-1/4 1/4 3/4 12 1 1 1
cups bleached all-purpose flour teaspoon salt cup sugar Tablespoons unsalted butter large egg Tablespoon lemon zest teaspoonpure vanilla extract
Royal Icing Ingredients: 3 4 6
Tablespoons meringue powder cups confectioners’ sugar, lightly spooned into the cup Tablespoons water
Directions Soften the butter. In a mixing bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until fluffy. Add the egg, lemon zest and vanilla extract and beat until blended. In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining dry ingredients. On low speed, gradually add them to the butter mixture and mix until incorporated. Add water, a few drops at a time, only until the dough starts to come away from the sides of the bowl. Scrape the dough onto a sheet of plastic wrap and use the wrap, not your fingers, to press the dough together to form a thick flat disc. Wrap it well and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably no longer than 3. Place two oven racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to a 1/8-inch thickness. Cut shapes, using your favorite Christmas cookie cutters or homemade cardboard patterns or even freehand. With a small, angled metal spatula or pancake turner, transfer the cookies to non-stick or buttered or greased cookie sheets. If you are planning to hang the cookies, make small holes with the blunted end of a wooden skewer. Reroll the scraps, chilling them first, if necessary. Bake for 8-12 minutes or until the cookies begin to brown around the edges. For even baking, rotate the cookie sheets from top to bottom and front to back halfway through the baking period. Use a small, angled metal spatula or pancake turner to transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool before decorating with Royal icing, dragees, sprinkles and glittering holiday edibles.
Royal Mixing:
In a large mixing bowl, place the powder, confectioner’s sugar and water and beat with the whisk beater attachment at low speed until the sugar is moistened. Beat at high speed until very glossy and stiff peaks form when the beater is lifted (5-7 minutes). The tips of the peaks should curve slightly. Keeps two weeks in an air-tight container at room temperature. Reheat lightly.

RED ALERT IN LINCOLN CITY Everyone’s favorite satin-suited celebrity will touch down in Lincoln City this Saturday, Dec. 16, as Miracle on 51st Street returns to Taft. Setting up in a mobile grotto outside Mo’s Restaurant, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be receiving visitors from 4:30 pm until everyone has had a chance to pass on their Christmas wishes. “We’ll be there for as long as it takes to see every kid,” said Santa. “If I have to fall asleep in the chair, then that’s OK.” The event, organized by the Bay Area Merchants Association, will see the Claus couple set off from the Christmas Cottage at 4 pm, spirited to Mo’s by a North Lincoln Fire & Rescue fire truck, flanked by a posse of bikers wearing reindeer horns. Kids and adults alike can get their photo taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus in return for a donation of one or two cans of food for the Lincoln City Food Pantry. And the Clauses will also pose with pets in return for a couple of cans of pet food for the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. Mo’s Restaurant is located at 860 SE 51st Street. For more information, call Susan Wahlke at 541-921-9329.

A
n oft-told tale of American history involves a 1938 radio broadcast that led to a bit of a kerfuffle when some people thought the Earth was being invaded by aliens. Though usually told with a “Tut, tut, how silly people were back then,” air, the “War of the Worlds” story still endures as an example of the importance of radio in the time before you could spend an entire day bingewatching Downton Abbey at the North Pole if you were so inclined. This weekend, Lincoln City’s Theatre West will try to recreate that simpler time, when it presents “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.” Among the actors taking to the stage is Theatre West veteran Wes Ryan, who has fond memories of radio’s golden age. “When I was a kid, you knew the lineup of the shows by heart because you didn’t want to take the chance on missing your favorites,” he said. The play, written by Joe Landry, presents a new twist on an old classic — going behind the scenes of a radio performance of the iconic movie “It’s A Wonderful Life,” complete with commercial breaks where the cast sings jingles. Director Lewis Smith has been spending the past
Director Lewis Smith packing a punch in the sound effects department, along with Tricia Chandler
few weeks collecting sound effects for the show to achieve the best effect. “The sound effects are also characters, in a way,” he said. “I’ve been having a great time trying to find all the different sounds that are in the script. Some of them look really complex but might only be used once, but since you don’t have the luxury of seeing the action, the quality of the sound effects gets more important.” The movie being reenacted in the radio show centers on George Bailey, played by Matt Blakeman, a man in crisis who considers ending it all on Christmas Eve. George is walked through the good deeds of his life by an angel named Clarence, who has troubles of his own. “Though the play is true to the movie, there are a few tricks that are used to transform it for the radio show,” Smith said. “For example, the angels can describe things that you would have normally seen in the film, like the envelope falling on the floor.” Smith, who recently directed and acted in
the new coastal favorite Halloween adventure, A Tour to Die For, gathered a large cast and crew to pull off the play within a play, including Tracy Blakeman, Bryan Kirsch, Robin Kirsch, Alice Luchau, Tom Carlson, Steve Griffiths, Joy Gallagher, Stina SeegerGibson, Rich Emery, Patti Siberz, Tricia Chandler and Kate Daschel, who will be handling the electronic sound effects, including period-appropriate music. Smith brought the idea to the Lincoln City theater company partially because he has a positive history with the play. “I was in a production of it in San Francisco and people really loved it,” he said. “I think a lot of people don’t know what to expect from a play about a radio performance, but it really is fun to watch, and also to produce. Next year, I’m hoping to actually broadcast it too.” Presented for one weekend only, the holiday-themed play is being presented for a holiday-worthy price. “All tickets are only

$10” Smith said. “We’re looking at this as partially a Christmas gift from the theater.” “It’s a Wonderful Life: A

Food for thought
Oregon Coast TODAY
H
ere on the Oregon Coast, the onset of the cold season can be felt in the air, smelt on the breeze and — most distinctly of all — tasted on the menu at Hearth & Table. It’s around this time of year that co-owners Danelle Lochrie and Ethan Granberg are to be found loading an entire palette of squash on to their pickup truck, with plans for putting the fall bounty to use in everything from soups to baked goods. “In the summer, things are fresh, so we say ‘let’s take these fresh things and put them together; that’s easy and pretty and perfect.’” Ethan said. “In the wintertime — you kind of let the seasons tell you what to do. More slow cooking, more root vegetables, more time, more prep and you end up with heartier dishes.” After a hectic summer, the couple finally have time for some of the more laborintensive tasks that come with running a restaurant where almost everything is made from scratch, Among those tasks, rolling out pasta for dishes like Ethan’s Pacific Northwest Ramen. “It’s not what you would consider a traditional ramen,” he said. “It’s not my job to try to take over people’s culture and half-ass what they do.” The dish combines chicken with smoked pork skin for the broth along with local vegetables and dried mushrooms garnished with thinly sliced root vegetables and herbs. “It’s like you are drinking a bowl of the flavor of the area,” Ethan said. Elsewhere on the menu, the couple are putting other locally sourced winter ingredients to work, from the exotic, such as quince, to more everyday offerings like apples, potatoes and carrots. “Most people assume a carrot is something you buy at the grocery store,” Ethan said, “but knowing that I have a local source for carrots is exciting to me as a chef.” With the restaurant now in its third year, Ethan and Danelle feel they have found their niche, with a loyal following of locals to supplement the summer rush. “It’s a little easier for us because we’ve been able to figure out menu items that people like more,” Danelle said. “We still change our

and the restaurant offers a revolving selection of brews ranging from accessible crowdpleasers to something a little different. “We are definitely seeing some trends in the broader brewing industry,” Ethan said, “Sour ales are growing in popularity. A new trend in IPAs which will throw a lot of the Pacific Northwest for a loop is the Northeast IPA; it’s juicy, cloudy, hop-forward but creamy.” Meanwhile, Danelle is baking up a storm in preparation for the holidays, producing batch after batch of the scones, bread rolls and other treats that longtime customers remember from the couple’s days at the Rockfish Bakery. Do not be surprised to find squash playing a starring role in your winter scone. Whether its rolling out handmade pasta or lovingly crafting pumpkin bread, Ethan and Danelle agree that winter is their favorite time of the year. “We are very thankful that our clientele helps us to be profitable throughout the year because of return custom,” Ethan said. “It’s a time for us to relax and to do the things that we want to do with food.”

When not serving up locally sourced food at Hearth & Table, Danelle and Ethan are most likely to be found doing exactly the same thing at St. James Santiago as part of the church’s meal program. The service, which is open to all, offers a free hot meal on Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as breakfast on Saturday. “It’s something I wish more people knew about — a service that is fantastic,” Danelle said. “I think it’s important for everyone to have food and it’s something that I think whenever you are in hard times, it’s something that can get overlooked.” The couple bring in all their own ingredients, with Danelle saying that local farmers are always happy to donate extra food for the program. “We like the meals to be hearty so people don’t leave hungry,” she said. “And as many vegetables as I can sneak in there.” For more details on the meal program, call St. James Santiago at 541-994-2426.

A piece-ful exhibit Throughout December, Lincoln City’s Beachstone Gallery will feature the mosaic art of Jaye Blackwood. Blackwood arrived on the coast from San Diego with graphic design training and a background in color theory. Joining the Artists’ Studio Association and enrolling in mosaic lessons from Jan Miller launched her new career working with colorful pieces of cut glass. Her studio in Seagrove, just south of Lincoln City, overlooks forest and is filled with natural light. Creating in this peaceful environment
gives her inspiration, harmony and balance. “Each piece begins with a concept and vision of the finished project,” she said, “but many times the materials dictate a new twist in the design.” An award-winning artist, Blackwood finds inspiration in the natural world. “Elements of design are embedded in nature” she said, “the texture of a leaf; the translucence of a flower petal; the blending of colors in a sunset; and the seafoam mist raising from the breaking waves.”
As a young child, Blackwood began working with natural materials to costume dolls. Now her materials are colored glass, with a powerful connection to the earth, incorporating beautiful patterns and colors. Blackwood’s work has shown in Chicago, Portland, and locally and she has been a featured artist on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Oregon Art Beat program. The exhibit will be on display daily from 10 am to 5 pm at Beachstone Gallery, located in the Artists’ Co-op Gallery building at 620 NE Hwy. 101.

Extend yourself in 2018 Registration is now open for the 2018 Master Gardener course offered by Tillamook’s Oregon State University Extension Service. Starting on January 11, Oregon State University faculty and local experts will offer weekly sessions on all aspects of gardening on the Oregon Coast. The 12-week course will cover soils, propagation, pruning, landscape and garden planning and design, suitable plants for coastal gardening and landscaping, pest and disease control, weed management, orchards, raised beds and other topics of interest to local gardeners. Students will experience a variety of hands-on and interactive training, including greenhouse techniques. The program also requires 60 hours of community service work in the first year of training, including advising the public during Master Gardener office hours. “By taking the Master Gardener classes, and in helping others, our Master Gardener apprentices develop their own expertise and abilities to better serve the community,” said OSU Extension Agent Joy Jones.
Spring into action The Master Gardener Program is also on offer in Newport through the OSU Lincoln County Extension. Running from January through March, the program allows participants to study with like-minded folks who have a desire to learn and are passionate about gardening.
“This is a great way to help yourself and others enjoy their gardens using current scientific knowledge.” Tuition is $120 and includes the comprehensive “Sustainable Gardening” book, as well as access to a wide range of printed and online resources, and experienced professional instructors. CHAPLAIN TRAINING ON OFFER Samaritan hospitals in Newport and Lincoln City are offering a new training program to prepare participants for a career as a hospital chaplain. The new Clinical Pastoral Education program, which begins in January, is open to people of all faith backgrounds. Participants do not need to be ordained. The program will offer professional and theological
training through supervised clinical ministry, allowing participants to gain the skills, increased confidence and competence to support people dealing with difficult life issues. While students will train in a clinical setting, the education and training will prepare them to serve as a chaplain in all fields, not just the medical industry. Training is done in four, 12-week sessions of
400 hours each. Students will learn through inclass seminars, peer group interaction and field placement. The winter session begins Thursday, Jan. 25. To learn more about the program, including costs and schedule, contact the Chaplain Services department at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital at 541-574-4751.
Y NOT TRY? Organizers of the Lincoln City Summer Kite Festival are accepting entries in a contest to name the 2018 event — provided the suggestions start with the letter “Y.” For years, the Lincoln City Visitor & Convention Bureau has been working its way through the alphabet for the June event. Last year’s search for a title beginning with “X” resulted in a festival called “X-Kitement.”

The naming contest runs through December and is open to anyone aged 18 and older. Entries can be submitted online at OregonCoast.org/ Kite-Contest. The lucky winner will receive a signature Finders Keepers glass float. Multiple entries per person are allowed. In the event of duplicate winning submissions, a random number generator will be used to pick the winner.
The Summer Kite Festival will return to Lincoln City’s D River Wayside on June 23 and 24, featuring some of the most colorful big show kites in the world, alongside kids’ kite making, professional kite demonstrations and the Running of the Bols, which is a footrace across the beach with each participant harnessed to a parachute kite. A CRACKING IDEA
S
ugar plum fairies, menacing mice and dazzling dance numbers will bring the magic of Christmas to life on Monday, Dec. 18, when The Eugene Ballet performs “The Nutcracker” in Tillamook. The performance of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece will take place at Tillamook High School, hosted by the Monday Musical Club of Tillamook. “For so many of us, it’s not quite Christmas until you’ve at least listened to the musical score of The Nutcracker,” said Adam Schwend, the club’s director of cultural events. “It’s a tradition, beloved by many of all ages.” “We don’t always do a Christmas show,” Schwend added. “However, a lot of folks are particularly interested in music and the arts around Christmas time, so this was a good opportunity to take one of the most adored Christmas shows in history and bring it professionally to Tillamook.” The performance will also feature aspiring dancers from both Tillamook School of Dance and Oregon Coast Dance Center. “I don’t know that it would be Christmas without doing ‘The Nutcracker,’” said Lisa Greiner of the Oregon Coast Dance Center. “For our studio, it really gets everybody in the Christmas spirit and for so many it has become a tradition to watch it performed every year.” After auditioning with the Eugene Ballet, 30 dancers aged five to 15 were selected based on their age, skill and choreography. These students have been working with Griener since the beginning of November to master the choreography and staging. “We have several students who danced with The Eugene Ballet a few years ago when they performed ‘Cinderella,’” Greiner said. “And then we have a lot of the younger kids, particularly the five and six year olds, who are very excited to dance on stage with professional ballerinas.” Her students will perform a variety of roles with the Eugene Ballet, such as party kids during the opening scene, baby mice, angels who dance with the Sugar Plum Fairy and Bon Bons inside the Kingdom of Sweets. “Many of them have roles that are very involved, and will be on stage for as much as half an hour,” Greiner said. “Part of our mission as Monday Musical Club is to encourage educational components in each performance that we bring to Tillamook,” Schwend said. “This gives our local dance talent the
A case of the Mondays • Also on the roster this year for the Monday Musical Club of Tillamook performances are The Queen’s Cartoonists, a jazz band that specializes in cartoon music, performing on Jan. 21; and Six Guitars, a one-man show featuring six different guitar-playing characters, on April 30. Season tickets are available. For more information on the Monday Musical Club of Tillamook, contact Adam Schwend at 503-457-8865 or email apschwend@gmail.com.
opportunity to work with and learn from professional dancers.” Greiner and her students have been performing “The Nutcracker” every year for the past 11 years, and will have their own performance on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15 and 16, the weekend prior to The Eugene Ballet performance. The Eugene Ballet performance of “The Nutcracker” begins at 7 pm on Monday, Dec. 18, at Tillamook High School. Advance tickets, $25 apiece, are available at www.mondaymusicalclub. com as well as TLC Federal Credit Union and the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are also available at the door for $30. Students aged 18 and under get in free.

Music for Christmas The Oregon Coast Recorder Society will perform music old and new in Newport this Sunday, Dec. 17, at a benefit concert for the local food pantry. Entitled “Music for Christmas,” the program includes Medieval carols “Personent hodie,” “Verbum caro factum est” and “Verbum Patris umanatur” in concert versions by Seattle composer Peter Seibert; “Midnight, Sleeping Bethlehem,” a Protestant hymn by Fong Liang Chien; “Stantipes,” a Medieval dance; an 18th Century “Noel” by Louis-Claude Daquin; three dances by a Dutch composer Willem
de Fesch; an anonymous English ballad “Daphne;” and concludes with an audience sing-along of familiar carols. Admission is by donation of nonperishable food items, checks or cash for the Newport food pantry. The concert will begin at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church of Newport, 227 NE 12th Street. The Oregon Coast Recorder Society rehearses every week and is open to recorder players or other musicians interested in early music. For more information, call 541961-1228 or go to www. coastrecorder.org.
SOME YOUTHFUL INFORMATION The Newport Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Symphony will present back-to back Christmas performances in Newport this weekend. On Friday, Dec. 15, the orchestra will be playing at the Sea of Lights event starting at 5 pm at Oregon Coast Aquarium, 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road. Then, on Saturday, Dec. 16, the group will take to the stage at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport, 227 NE 12th Street, for a concert starting at 2 pm. Co-directors of the orchestra, Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox, will preside. First on the program will be “Overture Strings,”
two chamber ensembles of younger students of violin, viola and cello directed by Wilcox and performing a series of tunes including the famous Pachabel Canon. Follett will then conduct the entire youth orchestra in “Pastorale” by Germane Tailleferre, a rockin’ arrangement of “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Dance of the Blessed Spirits” by C.W. Gluck, featuring local flutist Jenni Remillard. The program will close with “Brook Green Suite” by Gustav Holst. Saturday’s concert is free and open to the public, although donations to the Youth Symphony will be greatly appreciated.
Who cares? The Coastal-Aires. Toledo’s Trinity United Methodist Church is inviting everyone to a festive benefit concert for the Olalla Center for Children and Families on Thursday, Dec. 21. The concert, “Carols and Cares,” will feature the Coastal-Aires Barbershop Chorus and other local musicians performing a wide range of fun holiday music for the whole family.
The performance will be followed by a reception and light refreshments. The concert will start at 6:30 pm at the church, 383 NE Beech Street across from the JC Market. Admission is by suggested donation of $10 or $7 with a canned food donation to the Toledo Food Pantry. Proceeds from the concert will go towards building improvements

for the Olalla Center, which works to identify, understand, manage and eventually heal the emotional lives of local children. “Our children are critical to the overall health of our community,” said Trinity pastor Rev. Ryan Scott. “If we do not have healthy children we cannot have a healthy community and mental health is imperative to the overall health of our children.”
Music that’s bound to please The music of the mountains will collide with the coast this Saturday, Dec. 16, when Outbound Traveler take to the stage at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. They promise an evening of high-energy
instrumental sets and sweet mountain music that will keep your feet moving, plus vocal harmonies that will melt your heart. The concert will start at 7 pm in the auditorium at the cultural center, 540 NE Hwy. 101. Tickets, $15 in advance or $17 at the door, are available by calling 541-994-9994 or online at www.lincolncityculturalcenter.org.

A real stalk-ing ¿ller A classic fairy tale will bloom into life in Lincoln City this coming week as Missoula Children’s Theatre brings “Jack and the Beanstalk” to Taft High 7-12. When Jack plants Wonder Beans in his backyard, it is the beginning of a great adventure. With a little help from P.T. Wonder and a Giant, Jack learns a valuable lesson about true happiness. This musical production also features a host of other characters, including the Elegant Harp, Jill, Mother, Milky White, the Farmers, the Merchants, the Circus Performers and — of course — the Wonder Beans themselves. Auditions for the show will take place at 9 am sharp on Monday, Dec. 18, at the school, 3780 SE Spy Glass Ridge Drive. Thanks to sponsorship from Studios to Schools: Music Is Instrumental, the Walter R. Behrens Foundation and Charlotte Lehto Insurance, the program is free to kids living in the Lincoln City area (from Rose Lodge to Depoe Bay). Kids from outside the area are welcome to participate for a $50 fee. After the cast is selected, Missoula Children’s Theatre instructors will run them through rehearsals from Monday through Friday. The finished product will be performed at 3 and 5:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 22. Admission to the performances is $5 for adults, $3 for kids aged six to 18, and free for kids under six. For more information, contact Majalise Tolan at 541996-1115 or majalise.tolan@ lincoln.k12.or.us.
