This week’s top five

1

YACHATS(ish) — Some maps might tell you it’s in Florence but we at TODAY Towers are firmly of the opinion that the proud town of Yachats has prior claim to the Heceta Head Lightstation — putting it firmly within our coverage area. Could our decision be anything to do with the fondness that assistant editor Quinn displayed for the fine array of cookies on offer at the annual keeper’s cottage Christmas celebration last Sunday? Taste the cookies first and then decide; the celebration returns for two final nights this weekend.

2

See story, p. 14

YACHATS — If you prefer your solstice celebrations with open flames, grab a piece of driftwood and head to

from the editor

the Yachats Commons on Saturday, where the annual bonfire party will be in full swing, complete with hot drinks, treats and live music.

3

See story, p. 8

WALDPORT — So what happened after Ebeneezer Scrooge got scared straight by the Ghosts of Christmas? It can’t have been nothing but turkey and tinsel for the rest of his days. Find out, as the Waldport Assembly of God presents “Scrooge’s Second Christmas” on Sunday.

4

See story, p. 17

LINCOLN CITY — Christmas Eve already has a deserved reputation as the most exciting night of the

year. Performers from Kids Sing Out are doubling down on that with a Dec. 24 performance to warm the heart and stir the soul.

5

See story, p. 17

LINCOLN CITY — As if the rush on toy lightsabers wasn’t already big enough, what with this week’s release of a certain movie from far, far away, organizers of Lincoln City’s 50th birthday celebrations have added another reason for folks to seek out the blazing blades. The first ever Solstice Lighted Parade is the perfect venue for all sorts of batterypowered illuminations, whether an elegant weapon for a more civilized age or a string of fairy lights wrapped around the family dog.

A Big Thank You to All!

Your wellness is more than physical. What affects you? Visit samhealth.org/TodayIAm

Once again our community opened their hearts and pocketbooks, and made the 2015 Gallucci’s Christmas fundraiser a huge success. Through your generosity, we raised $4,783 for Samaritan North Lincoln Hospice. Theatre West took home the first place honors, followed by Gallucci’s Pizzeria, Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital, and Lynn’s Haircuts and Styles. The remaining team sponsors were: Hertz Construction, Britt Nelson and Friends, Charlotte Lehto Farmers Insurance, Chinook Winds, Samaritan N.L. Hospice, Samaritan N.L. Home Health, Garage Door Sales, RK Construction, Tom and Sherrie Correia, Mills Ace Hardware, Groth Gates, Dr. Bob’s Health Center, Lincoln City Realty and Friends, Barefoot at the Beach, Oregon Coast Bank, Betty Ruth and Friends, Stephanie Schmiedling and Friends, and North Lincoln Sanitary. The donations this year were incredible. I’d like to extend a very special thank you to the following donors: Atlantis Plumbing, Chinook Winds Casino, Barefoot at the Beach, Bice Construction, Mills Ace Hardware, Tiki’s, The Electronic Superstore, Gerber Tires, Diamonds by the Sea, Food Service of America, Bob’s Beach Books, The Gathering Place, Candyland, Diva Designs, Sea Horse Oceanfront Lodging, Cap’N Gulls Gifts, Carol’s Massage, Car Care Specialists, Wind Driven, North Lincoln Sanitary Service, Global Nail & Spa, Lincoln Auto Supply, Susan Paradiso, Carolyn Cowgill, America’s Mattress, Oregon Coast Bank, Matt and Michelle Browne, Tina Marshall, Westover Inns, Northwest Winds, Jennifer Sears Glass Foundry, The Christmas Cottage, The Red Cock, Sea Wick, Snack Attack, Nyla’s Cup of Jo, Lincoln City Community Center, Pacific Grind Café, Mo’s Restaurant, Eleanor’s Undertow, Kyllo’s, Walgreens, Grocery Outlet, Larry and Robyn Myers, Mazatlan, Sea the Light, Western Beverage, Ester Lee Motel, 101 South Lincoln City Liquor, Deli 101, Magnolia’s, Surftides, The Wine Shop, Sears, Marcie Howard Massage, ProBuild, Sysco, TLC, and Bob and Nancy Oksenholt. I would also like to thank Mr. Bill and his daughter Trina Brown for an entertaining evening of Triva; the Barefoot at the Beach team for selling 1,850 raffle tickets; Jayne, Vanessa and Jade for their help throughout the evening; and to Rebecca O’Neal for spending days gathering donations and organizing a major portion of the event. I can personally say that hospice is very helpful in making patients feel comfortable during the last few months of their lives. For this reason, I am extremely grateful for such a service. Most of all, thank you to the members of our community for making many people’s lives easier through such hard times. The staff at Gallucci’s wishes you the Happiest of Holidays!

My Holiday Shopping List: Soap Music Knit hat Salmon Dog treats Photograph T-shirt Beer Cards Vodka Books Dinner Massage By the time you read this, I will have purchased all of the Oregon Coast-made products or services listed above for Christmas gifts for my friends, family, myself, dogs, transients and perfect strangers. I take pride in my consumer choices. I might even say I feel a little sanctimonious because over the years I’ve encountered a lot of people (several of them paid staffers) in the Buy Local movement who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk. I’ve seen it with my own eyes and the hypocrisy undermines everything die-hard Buy Local proponents try to accomplish for rural America. This holiday season, I urge anyone with last-minute shopping needs to seek out locally produced goods and services from independent artisans and entrepreneurs in our community and support them. That might mean buying direct from them in person, through their web sites, or patronizing a local retailer who carries these products. Does it really take all that much more effort? No, it does not. What it asks of consumers is to become aware of these goods and services, of cultivating curiosity in your community’s home-sourced economy, of walking the streets and exploring shops

and restaurants you’ve driven by a hundred times. This home-sourced economy is literally all around you. Part of it is probably your neighbor or co-worker child’s music teacher producing something of exquisite originality. I stake my credibility on making these claims because of my role as an independent publisher of books about Oregon that are exclusively available from independent bookstores, gift shops, at live events, my website and out of the back of my truck. I would have never gone on to sell almost 30,000 books in Oregon this last decade unless consumers bought into my concept of sustainable literature, made the extra effort and paid a bit more. I try to thank everyone personally I meet along the way of this improbable, often hilarious, marketing journey and it’s proved to be the most rewarding experience of my creative life. In fact, my next book is about this very

journey. What a novelty! Meeting the person who made your soap, wrote a book, brewed your favorite beer — and discussing the transaction! Learning the passion behind the product or service! A real face-to-face kind of thing where handshakes and smiles are common. It routinely happens when you choose to buy local. It’s what George Bailey was all about. Try buying local this year. And if you are already committed to this ethos, redouble your efforts. There is still a week left to get in this important game and bolster local artisans and entrepreneurs. They need your support. The Oregon Coast economy does as well. Matt Love is the author/ editor of 14 books about Oregon. His books are available through coastal bookstores or his web site, nestuccaspitpress.com. His latest book is “The Great Birthright: An Oregon Novel.”

A novel sauce of funding Readers used to following the strands of a twisting plot are invited to tackle strands of a different sort as the Library Lovers’ Spaghetti Dinner returns to Manzanita on Tuesday, Jan. 26. The feast, held at the Big Wave Café will help the North Tillamook Library Friends meet the cost of

utilities and maintenance work for the Manzanita Branch library. Last year’s dinner raised funds to help replace gutters and install a new drainage system, and this year’s event will serve as a fundraising kick-off to replace worn furniture in the reading lounge. “We are lucky to have

such a fine library in our small community,” said Big Wave Café owner and chef Brian Williams. “The North Tillamook Library Friends do a wonderful job maintaining the building, making it something we are all proud of and love to use.” The Library Lovers’ dinner will run from 5 to 7 pm, with a menu including

spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and dessert. Tickets, $20 apiece and tax-deductible, are available by emailing North Tillamook Library Friends board member Gail Young at ntlf1987@gmail. com or calling 503-3685248. The Big Wave Café is located at 822 Laneda Avenue, in Manzanita.

HAVE YOU GOT THE BOTTLE? As preparations continue for the 2016 Newport Seafood & Wine Festival, organizers at the Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce are now accepting entries for the event’s Amateur Wine Competition. This year’s festival, themed “It’s Kind of A Big Deal” and presented by Chinook Winds Casino Resort, will run from February 25 to 28 at Newport’s South Beach Marina. One month prior to the festival, a

panel of local judges will gather for a blind tasting of up to 70 wines crafted by wine enthusiasts from around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Entries with the highest marks will be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze ribbons and one winner will be named Best of Show. Wines can be dropped off until Jan. 22 at F.H. Steinbard in Portland, Home Fermenter Center in Eugene, Corvallis Brewing Supply in Corvallis and

Homebrew Heaven in Salem. And entrants can drop off their wines as late as Jan. 29 at the Newport Chamber of Commerce office, located at 555 SW Coast Hwy. in Newport. All wines should be accompanied by an entry form, which can be found online at seafoodandwine.com. For more information, go to www.seafoodandwine.com or call 1-800-COAST44.

STORMING THE TOWER As spectacular storms batter the Oregon Coast, there are few better places to grab a front-row seat than the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area near Newport, offering storm watching, whale watching, an absorbing Interpretive Center and a historic lighthouse Visitors can sign up for free guided tours of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse at noon, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm from Fridays through Tuesdays. From Dec. 27 through 31, trained volunteers will be on hand from 10 am to 1 pm each day to help visitors spot migrating gray whales during Winter Whale Watch Week. During storms, visitors can watch the sea-foam

whirlwinds at Quarry Cove and see the big breakers rolling in while sunny days present opportunities for hiking the area’s trails or visiting the tide pools at Cobble Beach. The park entrance fee is $7 per vehicle for a 3-Day Pass. A range of annual passes are also available. The Interpretive Center will be open daily 10 am to 4 pm (closed Christmas Day). All other areas of the park will be open from 8 am to sunset, seven days a week (including Christmas and New Year’s Day). For more information, call the Bureau of Land Management at 541-5743100 or go to www.blm. gov/or/resources/recreation/ yaquina.

GET TAI-D UP IN HEBO A new, 12-week course in Tai Chi will be on offer in Hebo starting on Jan. 4, aimed at helping seniors improve their balance and reduce the risk of a fall. Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance is a nationally recognized program based on eight forms of Tai Chi. Statistics show that if a person practices three hours a week for 12 weeks during class, they can reduce their risk of falling by 50 percent. Taught by certified instructors, the course is offered through a partnership between Tillamook County Family YMCA and the Northwest Senior and Disability Services. Classes will run from 10 to 11 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning on Monday, Jan. 4, at the Nestucca Fire and Rescue Hall, 30710 Hwy. 101, Hebo. This course is free to participants over the age of 60, those who are ADA qualified and YMCA members.

Also beginning January 4 is a class on Tai Chi Short Form and Qi Gong, a pair of disciplines that are closely related. Tai Chi is the form of Qi Gong that is also a martial art, whereas Qi Gong means “energy work” and the movements are designed to promote healthy circulation of qi (energy) and to improve internal organ strength and overall health throughout the entire body. In this class, students will learn the basic 24 forms of Tai Chi Chuan, Yang Family style and Eight Silk Brocade Qi Gong. Classes will run from 8:45 to 9:45 am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays — also at the Nestucca Fire and Rescue Hall. This class costs $110 for 36 sessions. Beginners are always welcome at both classes. For more information or to register, call Linda Werner at 503-398-5223 or the YMCA at 503-842-9622.

Sometimes when people hit middle age, they start acting a little crazy — guys make up for graying hair by buying a sports car while women hearing the tick-tock of time jack in their jobs, travel the world and learn the Tango. Meanwhile, Lincoln City, which turned 50 this year, has gone parade crazy, following up the anniversary procession that took over Highway 101 in September with another, set for Monday, Dec. 21 — on the beach, at dusk. The Solstice Lighted Parade will see people of all ages take to the sands for a one-mile illuminated trek to mark the grand ďŹ nale of Lincoln City’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The crowd will be wielding lanterns, ashlights, glow sticks, lightsabers and anything else that glows without a naked ame. Parade participants should meet at 5:30 pm at the NW 40th Street beach access at Chinook Winds Casino Resort and be prepared to march in any weather. After the parade, participants and spectators can head to the Chinook Winds Casino Hotel for hot drinks, cake, treats, prize drawings and live music. “This event is a new one that will be fun for everyone, young and old alike,â€? said organizer Sandy Gruber. “All we ask from participants is to make sure they bring along lights. Feel free to light up your hats, jackets, shoes, belts, umbrellas, or anything you can think of. We want to shine along the beach.â€?

Don’t have a light-up umbrella? No problem — a Lantern Decorating Party set for the day before the parade will give everyone the chance to whip up something suitable for the occasion. Running from 12:30 to 4:30 pm at the Lincoln City Community Center, the Friday, Dec. 20, workshop will give participants the chance to buy a battery-powered lantern for just $5 and spend the afternoon customizing it with tissue paper, felt tips and more. “Expect a lot of chaos,â€? Gruber said. “It’s going to be crazy.â€? Basic decorating supplies will be provided but Gruber said people should feel free to bring along any leftover Christmas decorations or wrapping supplies to add to their masterpieces. All proceeds from the party go to support the Youth Scholarship Fund. Gruber said the decorating party and the parade itself are a great excuse for people to get together and celebrate, whether they hit the beach with an elaborate creation or stay up on the blu with a simple lantern. “Big, small, light, dim, it’s just all the light together and all the varieties together that makes it fun,â€? she said. For more information on the Solstice Lighted Parade, call Gruber at 541-9945646.

This one’s a keeper Christmas at Heceta Head Lighthouse will leave you beaming Story & photos by Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY

Few things in life are as spellbinding as an evening stroll to see a historic lighthouse send its beam cutting through the dusk — especially when the stroll ends with a sweet treat, a hot drink and a warm welcome. For 20 years, the Heceta Lighthouse B&B has been offering just such a perfect evening at its Annual Victorian Christmas Open House. The event, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19 & 20, invites guests to admire the 1894 lighthouse up close before warming up with cocoa, hot cider and cookies at the B&B, located in the lighthouse keeper’s cottage. Visitors can admire the handsome furnishings and lavish decorations in the cottage’s reception rooms against a backdrop of live music from local performers playing everything from piano and guitar to dobro and dulcimer. Meanwhile, in the parlor, Santa Claus awaits, ready to hear kids’ Christmas wishes. B&B owner Michelle Korgan said her parents started the event in their first year of running the B&B under a contract with the US Forest Service, which owns the keeper’s cottage building. “They thought ‘what a great opportunity to share the house with the community,’” she said. “It’s just perfectly set up for decorations.” “It’s been a traditional holiday event ever since,” she added.

Korgan said she thinks the celebration’s longevity is due to the iconic stature of the lighthouse, which is often referred to as the mostphotographed spot on the Oregon Coast. “It’s an amazing landmark,” she said. “I’ve traveled the world and seen it pretty much everywhere I’ve gone.” Guests can park at the Heceta Head Lighthouse State Scenic Viewpoint, located just off Highway 101, some 14 miles south of Yachats. From there, they can choose to either hop on the shuttle bus for the quick ride up to the cottage or to bundle up for a short evening hike. “On a nice night that’s not blustery, we will have 300 to 400 people make the stroll.” Korgan said. “Even on a blustery night about a hundred people will choose to walk.” Regardless of whether you shuttle or hike to the keeper’s cottage, it is well worth walking the extra few hundred yards to the lighthouse itself, which takes on a whole new dimension after dark. “It’s such a treat to be up there at night,” Korgan said. “The lens is lit up like a big Faberge egg, with the beam going 26 miles out to sea.” While guests can’t climb

December stroll, the warm confines of the keeper’s cottage are particularly welcoming. Each night, drinks and treats are served by groups of volunteers from either Yachats or Florence — the lighthouse is located smack dab in between the two towns, and beloved by both. A raffle gives guests the chance to win all sort of prizes donated from merchants in both towns and beyond. Among the prizes on offer is a night’s stay in the B&B, whose rooms range from the Mariner’s duo, with their commanding views of the ocean, to the cozy Cape Cove Room, which looks out over Cape Creek Bridge. Breakfast in the morning is a gourmet, seven-course affair, with the menu changing depending on what’s in season. The inspiration for such a

lavish breakfast came from the B&B’s original owners, Mike and Carol Korgan, who were both certified executive chefs when they moved to the Oregon Coast to start up their hospitality endeavor. The couple, who now divide their time between the coast and Portland, will be present at the Dec. 19 & 20 events, with Mike joining in the piano playing “They are here pretty much every holiday season,” Korgan said. “We all stay at the house over Christmas.” The Annual Victorian Christmas Open House will run from 4 to 7 pm on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19 and 20. Heceta Lighthouse B&B is located just off Highway 101, 14 miles south of Yachats. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

You’d better beli-EVE it

When Kids Sing Out took to the stage at the Lincoln City Cultural Center for its first annual Christmas Concert almost three years ago, one of the songs that filled the auditorium was “Imagine a World Without Christmas.” And that prospect almost came to pass this year, when the children’s performance group had to cancel plans for its 2015 show due to a host of other commitments combining to overwhelm Artistic Director Valerie Kendall. Kendall said the idea of canceling the show did not sit well with the kids, who have put their heart and soul into the project every year. “They broke through boundaries on song, dance and production values with each successive performance,” she said. “But the most exciting

transformations of all were personal. Every KSO performer grew in confidence and team spirit” So the group began to re-imagine the 2015 event, looking for a way to combine the energy of the KSO kids with the ever-evolving sound of the Behind Enemy Lines Worship Team with whom Kendall performs her music ministry at First Baptist Church. “Was there a way to

combine church Christmas commitments with community involvement?” Kendall said. “Could we access the no-fuss talents of other community performers to create a beautiful program without the lengthy eight-week rehearsal and 10-week writing process?” Soon, a new show came into focus — a Christmas Eve Celebration that would allow the community and its visitors to have a unique experience of the meaning of Christmas. The Dec. 24 show combines beautiful music, stirring dance, riveting drama and eye-catching production elements, all woven into an ancient story that holds great relevance for troubled modern times. The music lineup includes a mix of classics and original pieces with arrangements by Kendall.

The Kids Sing Out crew

The KSO performers will be joined on stage by Behind Enemy Lines, consisting of Judy Allen and Shannon Zantello on hand percussion, Amanda Cherryholmes on cajón and rhythm guitar, Jane Ott on

keyboard, Scott Perkins on bass and cello, and Kendall herself on lead guitar. Guest artists will include tenor soloist Bob Herman, guitarist Tom Owczarzak and the Beard Family Bells, with Barbara and Paula on

bells and Paul on piano. The celebration will begin at 7 pm in the auditorium at the cultural center, 540 NE Hwy. 101. Admission and refreshments are free but donations are appreciated.

What the Dickens happened next?

Dan Logue as Ebenezer Scrooge and Laurie Logue as Mrs. Cratchit

Literature would have us believe that the story of Ebenezer Scrooge ended with everyone feeling warm and fuzzy while dining on the largest turkey in London. But, on Dec. 20, guests at Waldport Assembly of God will get to hear what happened next, in a performance of “Scrooge’s Second Christmas.” A sequel to Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” this mini-musical follows the life of the infamous old skinflint one year after the famed dream we all know and love. Things have changed for the better for Ebenezer, until Mrs. Cratchit’s Tiny Tim suddenly takes another turn for the worst. First published on Dec. 19, 1843, “A

Christmas Carol” was a runaway bestseller for Dickens, who was already the literary superstar of his day. It has never been out of print, making characters including the Cratchits, Jacob Marley and the Fezziwigs known all around the world. “Scrooge’s Second Christmas” picks up where Dickens left off. Audience members will find out what Mr. Scrooge has been up to since then and see what happens when Ebenezer faces some of his old problems, but with a new heart and a new outlook. The free performance will start at 10:30 am at the church, 485 NW Cedar Street, Waldport. For more information, go to waldportassembly.com.

Take a pew — with The Congregation

Music that brings joy to the heart and warmth to the coastal winter will be on offer this Saturday, Dec. 19, as Sammy Miller and the Congregation step on stage at the Lincoln City Cultural Center for an evening of New Orleans-style jazz. A native of Los Angeles, Miller has become known for his musical maturity and relentless focus on making music that feels good as a drummer, singer and bandleader. Upon completing his master’s at The Juilliard School, Sammy formed his ensemble, The Congregation — a band focused on sharing the power of community through their music and

creating joyful jazz. While independently the band members have performed and recorded with notable artists including Wynton Marsalis, O.A.R, Iron and Wine and Lee Fields at venues including The White House, Lincoln Center and the Hollywood Bowl, The Congregation has opted to stick together and create globally conscious music with the intention to spread joy throughout the world. The Congregation includes Alphonso Horne on trumpet, Ben Flocks on tenor saxophone, Patrick Sargent on soprano sax, Jon Lampley on sousaphone, David Linard

on piano, Sam Crittendon on trombone, Molly Miller on guitar and Sammy Miller on drums. Starting at 7 pm in the auditorium of the cultural center at 540 NE Hwy. 101, Saturday’s concert will help audience members warm up for the holidays with hits from Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams and lots more. For more on the band, go to sammymillercongregation. com. Tickets, $15 in advance and $17 on the door, are available at the center box office, online at www.lincolncityculturalcenter.org or by calling 541-994-9994.

Bold = Minus Tides. Tide tables are for recreational use. If you’re piloting the “Costa Concordia II” in front of your college roommate’s oceanfront bungalow at Otter Crest or Cape Lookout, talk to a harbormaster. Tide info courtesy tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. If you discover a seal pup or other stranded marine animal on the beach, do not approach, touch, or pour water on the animal. Instead, call 800-452-7888. Keep dogs leashed and far from all marine mammals. Japanese Tsunami Debris Info: Information on significant marine debris sightings on the coast can be reported to the NOAA Marine Debris Program at DisasterDebris@noaa.gov.

STARS OF THE SHOW Paintings depicting Christmas in Bethlehem will be on display at Newport’s Yaquina Arts Association Gallery through Saturday, Dec. 26, as part of a two-week Spotlight Show featuring work from Sally Morris and Mary Young. Morris has been painting her whole adult life and has lived on the Oregon Coast for the past 11 years. She uses many mediums in her artwork including watercolor, oils, pastels and clay. Her “To Bethlehem and Beyond” show was inspired by a recent trip to the Holy Land. The show will also feature glass works by Young, who moved to the Oregon Coast eight years ago. She is inspired by nature, animals and things that make her smile or laugh — and loves experimenting with glass and the color combinations. The show be on display through Saturday, Dec. 26, available to view from 11 am to 4 pm at the gallery, 789 NW Beach Drive.

THESE BEAUX ARE WORTH A PEEP A wild comedy of love and cash will grace the big screen at the Newport Performing Arts Center on Friday, Dec. 18, when the National Theater London Live in HD series continues with “The Beaux’ Stratagem.” The beaux of the title, Mr. Aimwell and Mr. Archer, are two charming, dissolute young men who have blown their fortunes in giddy London. Shamed and debt-ridden, they

flee to provincial Lichfield. Their stratagem — to marry for money. Lodged at the local inn, posing as master and servant, they encounter a teeming variety of human obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French count, a maid on the make, a drunken husband, a furious butler, a natural healer and a strange, turbulent priest. But their greatest obstacle

is love. When the pair meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs. Sullen they are most at risk, for in love they might be truly discovered. The screening will run from 7 to 10 pm at 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and $11 for students, are available at the box office, online at www. coastarts.org or by calling 541-265-ARTS (2787).
