Splash out on a whale plate S’pout time your car got a present, too Marine Science experts on the Oregon Coast are encouraging drivers to “put a whale on their tail” by signing up for a new license plate featuring a gray whale and her calf. Proceeds from sales of the specialty plates will support the Oregon State University Marine Mammal Institute, based at Newport’s Hatfield Marine Science Center. “Since we first announced the program in December 2016, we’ve heard a lot of enthusiastic support for the design of the plates and the concept of supporting whale conservation,” said Marine Mammal Institute Director Bruce Mate. Mate said the initiative received strong support from public officials and the Oregon Legislature, with leadership from Rep. David Gomberg of District 10 on the central coast, who endorsed the idea during several legislative sessions.

The new plate was designed by well-known wildlife illustrator Pieter Folkens, who originally created the image for a poster. It depicts a whale cow and calf on a two-toned background with a lighthouse in the upper left corner and the slogan “Coastal Playground” across the bottom. People interested in putting a whale on their tail can buy a voucher for $40 at whaleplate.com. Once 3,000 vouchers have been sold, the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles will begin the roughly 12-week process of manufacturing the plates. The Marine Mammal Institute will notify buyers when their vouchers can be redeemed for license plates at DMV oﬃces. The Marine Mammal Institute will receive $35 for each pair of license plates sold, with the funds going toward whale research, graduate student education and public outreach. Mate, who has been with the institute since it was founded in

2006, is an internationally recognized expert in marine mammal research who pioneered some of the earliest research into tracking tagged whales by satellite. The work of Mate and the institute was featured prominently in a 2009 documentary “Kingdom of the Blue Whale,” which was narrated by Tom Selleck and became the most widely viewed documentary on the National Geographic Channel. Genetic research by Scott Baker, associate director of the institute, was featured in “The Cove,” which won an Academy Award for documentaries in 2010 for its unveiling of dolphin exploitation in a small Japanese ﬁshing village. In 2015, researchers from the Marine Mammal Institute and their Russian colleagues documented the longest migration of a mammal ever recorded — a round-trip trek of nearly 14,000 miles by a gray whale named Varvara. Marine Mammal Institute

researchers also have worked on sperm whale ecology in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, analyzed whales’ response to shipping traﬃc and sonar noise, revolutionized new tags for tracking whales and studied whale behavior and ecology from the Arctic Ocean to Antarctica. In collaboration with Oregon State Parks, the institute trains volunteers for the Whale Watch Spoken Here program, which annually helps up to 40,000 tourists spot migrating gray whales during winter and spring breaks. “Whales are wonderful creatures and the world is better with them in it,” Mate said. “This license plate program will directly help the Marine Mammal Institute achieve its goals of conservation-oriented research, graduate student education and public outreach.” For more information on the Marine Mammal Institute, go to https://mmi.oregonstate.edu.

Local performing artists Mary Eastman and Marc Maislen will emcee a live auction, offering sought-after experiences and treasures to last for generations. A workshop that really moves the needle

He’s playing all the oldies The Great Room at Newport’s Paciﬁc Maritime Heritage Center will be the venue for an afternoon of music played on vintage instruments this Saturday, Dec. 2, when the Lincoln County Historical Society holds its annual holiday gathering. Brent Bunker will be showing and playing his extensive collection of old and unusual musical instruments, including the ukalin, harp o lyre, tremoloa

and Marxophone. Festivities will take place around the cheery warmth of the ﬁreplace and will include refreshments. Guests can also check out the museum’s exhibits and enjoy the unmatched views of Newport’s Historic Bayfront. Be sure to bring your Christmas shopping list; the Maritime Center gift shop will be oﬀering a special holiday discount only available during this

event. The shop stocks a range of maritime and history publications, as well as locally produced items. The holiday gathering will run from 1 to 4 pm at 333 SE Bay Blvd. Parking is available at the top of the hill. Admission is free for members and kids under 12, and $5 for non-members. December will offer three chances to craft a holiday wreath using materials gathered from the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, with workshops on offer in Lincoln City as well as at the refuge itself. Volunteer-in-residence Lee Sliman will show how to combine native conifers and shrubs into a beautiful, easyto-make wreath in a process that is fun for the whole family. All materials are provided, including fresh-cut greens, ring, wires and ribbons. Participants can also bring special decorating items to personalize their wreath. Guests should wear warm, comfortable clothing and bring pruning shears and gardening gloves if possible. The first workshop will take place from noon to 2:30 pm on Sunday, Dec 3, at Lincoln City’s Connie Hansen Gardens, 1931 NW 33rd Street. A $5 donation is

requested for the garden On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9 and 10, Sliman will lead a pair of workshops at Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, both running from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Admission is free. Workshops held at the refuge will also include a short interpretive talk to learn about the materials used in

wreath making. The refuge is located on the west side of Highway 101, about six miles south of Paciﬁc City. A reign-y day activity Consider throne yourself into photography, as King Tides return to the coast Grab your camera — and grab your rubber boots while you’re at it — the King Tide Project is appealing for photos of extreme high tides set to hit the Oregon Coast on Sunday, Dec. 3, through Tuesday, Dec. 5. These tides arrive when the sun, moon and Earth are in alignment, causing a strongerthan-usual gravitational pull. Anyone with a camera can participate. Just find a good location, snap photos and post them online. King Tide photos can be taken anywhere affected by tides, whether on the outer shoreline, in estuaries or along lower river floodplains. Photos showing high water in relation to infrastructure such as roads, bridges and seawalls

can be particularly striking, and reveal where flooding problems threaten. But shots of marshes or other habitats being inundated, or coastal shorelines subject to flooding and erosion, are also useful. The goal of this long-term citizen science project is to document the highest reach of the tides on an ongoing basis, for comparative study over a period of many years. Photographers are urged to return to the locations from which they took King Tide photos and take comparison shots at ordinary high tide. While the King Tide Project can help to identify areas that are currently threatened by flooding, the more important purpose is to gain a preview of sea level rise. The king tides, while extreme today, will become the “new normal” as sea level continues to rise, and storm surges increase, due to global warming. Gaining a glimpse of tidal inundation likely to

become common decades into the future will beneﬁt planners, resource agencies, conservationists and coastal citizens in preparing for these changes. ewport’s historic Bayfront will be aglow this Saturday, Dec. 2, as vessels of all sizes take to Yaquina Bay for the annual Lighted Boat Parade. Now in its 24th year, the parade transforms the Yaquina Bay into a watery winter wonderland with a host of vessels, twinkling lights and festivities for the entire family. Sponsored by Don and Fran Mathews of Marine Discovery Tours, this favorite event is the signature ‘holiday on water festival’ on the Oregon Coast. “We started this in 1994 as a fun way to promote the Bayfront and raise community dollars for the Paciﬁc Communities Hospital Foundation’s Festival of Trees,” Fran said. “It draws people from all over the Paciﬁc Northwest and provides a boost to local merchants.” An idea that began small has evolved into an armada of ships, private vessels, motorboats and sail boats — even sea

kayaks get into the fun. “The lighted displays vary also,” Fran said. “Some people go all out with a variety of themes, lighting techniques, ﬁreworks and live music. We have even had Santa here on water skis. Maybe he’ll be back again this year.” The Bayfront oﬀers ample free parking spaces, nautical-themed displays, seating areas, shops, docks to view the sea lions and ample walkways to stroll and watch the magic. It is also the largest public viewing area along the parade route, creating an optimal location to gather and enjoy the festivities. The parade begins at 5 pm, with boats departing from various docks along the Bayfront, as well as the South Beach marina. Hundreds of onlookers line the docks, walkways, scenic shops and restaurants watching the boats circle the bay from the Coast Guard Station to the Embarcadero and back. The US Coast Guard’s “Victory,” built in 1956 and the oldest Coast Guard vessel in active duty, will lead the parade in stately elegance. Other vessels participating include the Discovery, Newport Tradewinds, Baitball, Miss

Raven, as well as launches from NOAA Paciﬁc Fleet, whose research vessels return for the winter. Mathews says more than 15 vessels have registered for this 24th Lighted Boat Parade, with the lineup determined the night before in a drawing for placement. One opportunity for onlookers to get in on the fun is to purchase tickets from the passenger licensed boats. The Marine Discovery Tours and Newport Tradewinds have space available. Passengers tickets are $30 for adults; $15 for youth and free for kids aged 3 and under. While onboard enjoying the cruise and the dazzling array of lights, passengers are treated to hot chocolate and cookies. The total capacity between both boats is approximately 75, so people are urged to purchase now by calling 541-265-6200 or visiting Marine Discovery Tours at Anchor Pier, 345 SW Bay Blvd., on Newport’s Bayfront before 3 pm on Saturday. All entry fees and passenger ticket sales are donated directly to the Festival of Trees. “This is a feel-good event for the boating community, as we contribute to

WATT A SHOW The holidays are a tough time to be an electric eel at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Throughout December, these zippy critters have to live with the fact that they are no longer the highest-wattage exhibit on show. That’s because the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year are ﬁlled with the aquarium’s annual Sea of

Lights display, featuring more than half a million colorful lights and holiday decorations. Visitors exploring the aquarium after hours can stroll the grounds and admire the displays as well as visiting with Santa Claus and even see him don SCUBA gear for a dunk into one of the exhibit tanks. This family-friendly event kicks oﬀ with a special

celebration on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1 and 2, from 6 to 9 pm. Admission to the ﬁrst Friday and Saturday of Sea of Lights is $2 plus two cans of nonperishable food — or $10 per person without donation. Admission is free for Aquarium members, but they are encouraged to bring an item to donate. Guests can also donate pet food or

new, unwrapped children’s toys for the Newport Fire Department’s Holiday Toy Drive in place of a food

donation. Sea of Lights will continue to illuminate the aquarium from 5 to 8 pm every Friday

Take a shine to the Tillamook Coast Traveling the Oregon Coast has always been an illuminating experience, but never more so than this year, with villages and towns throughout Tillamook County coming together to put on a lights display that stretches 60 miles from Manzanita to Neskowin. Throughout December, light displays will be on show in Manzanita, Nehalem, Wheeler, Rockaway Beach, Garibaldi, Bay City, Tillamook, Cloverdale, Pacific City and Neskowin. or some it’s a ’57 Cadillac, for others a double-engine Harley, but here on the coast, there’s only one serious contender for the title of “sweet ride.” The Candy Cane Express is thundering through another holiday season at the Oregon Coast, offering cookies, hot chocolate and the chance to rub elbows with Saint Nick, himself. The excursion treats passengers to an outand-back trip from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach aboard a steam train packed with festive flair and festooned with Christmas lights to make it glow in the low winter light. The excursion is bursting with romance and charm, with the train pulled by an Alco #25 steam engine, enjoying a slow-paced retirement after a career on the McCloud Railroad near Mount Shasta. Scott Wickert, the railroad’s founder and chief mechanical officer, said the engine gets a great response whenever it hits the tracks. “Everyone wants the steam engine out,” he said, adding. “The colder the weather is outside, the more the steam shows. It will leave a real big plume of steam going down the tracks. It attracts a lot of attention.” Upon boarding the train in Garibaldi, passengers are greeted by a smartly uniformed conductor and offered a choice between a vintage train carriage with coach-style seats or a cozy, more modernly appointed carriage complete with a delightfully decorated Christmas tree. The trip takes about 30 minutes each way, with the train doing an almost immediate turnaround upon reaching Rockaway Beach. Once the train is underway, Santa’s helper makes her way through the carriages, handing out locally baked cookies and pointing passengers toward the cocoa station. With everyone settled and enjoying their treats, it’s time for the main event; Santa and Mrs. Claus. Resplendent in their crimson garb, the couple make their way from seat to seat, visiting with each child aboard to hand out candy canes and listen to Christmas wishes.

the trip still has plenty to oﬀer. With tracks hugging the shores of Tillamook Bay, the excursion gives passengers a front-row seat for views across the broad inlet, along with the luxury of being able to study the landscape in a way that simply isn’t possible from the highway. “Depending on the weather and time of year you can see a lot of the birds out on the water, sometimes you can see seals,” Wickert said. “It just depends how diligently you watch.” While Santa will be resplendent in his traditional red satin suit, passengers are encouraged to come as they are and dress with chilly winter temperatures in mind. When weather permits, the railroad will add an open-topped carriage to the train, giving people the option of getting that much closer to the scenery. Wickert said the trip is a highlight for the railroad staﬀ, many of whom are volunteers and who come from across the region to help out. “Everyone on board this train is doing it because they love it,” he said. “It’s a labor of love.”

The intimate surroundings of the train car, combined with Santa’s engaging manner are sure to bring a smile to the face of even the

shyest kid aboard. And even for passengers who simply refuse to believe in Santa, elves or ﬂying reindeer,

Oregon’s homegrown jazz sensation Halie Loren will return to the Oregon Coast on Wednesday, Dec. 6, for a festive performance entitled “Holidays with Halie.” “Every time I get to return to the coast, it feels like I’m returning home again,” Loren said, “and into the wonderful company of some of the warmest and kindest people on Earth.” Fed by the hyperborean beauty of her childhood Alaska home, Loren’s gift for discovering the playfulness, pizazz and sensuality inherent in a lyric appeared early on. But it was her talent for turning those feelings into genre-defying original compositions — songs at once universal and deeply personal

— that captured wider attention. Loren’s debut release of 11 original songs, “Full Circle” (2006), was hailed for exhibiting “a power and grace that are nearly unheard of in popular music.” Her sophomore album, “They Oughta Write a Song” (2008), brought to light her life-long love of jazz standards, and subsequently won a national independent music award for best vocal jazz album. Loren’s music has proven well suited to concert halls, and she has performed alongside the Jazz Orchestra of Sicily, the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra and the Monroe Symphony in Louisiana. She has traveled the world with the members

of her original band, including to Canada, Japan, Italy, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. Loren will appear on the cultural center stage alongside longtime collaborator and pianist Matt Treder along

with Sean Peterson on upright bass and Brian West on drums. “Holidays with Halie” will oﬀer two sets with one intermission, inside the auditorium of the cultural

center at 540 NE Hwy. 101. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, with limited table seating ﬁrst-come, ﬁrst-served, and the show scheduled to begin at 7 pm. Refreshments will be available to buy

INHOUSE Jazz will return to the Oregon Coast this Sunday, Dec. 3, for a holiday concert featuring guitarist Christopher Woitach, trombonist John Moak and vocalist Annie Averre. The three performers enjoy a longstanding collaborative relationship, and the convert will showcase Averre’s favorite selections from her repertoire. Christopher Woitach plays a wide range of jazz styles, from Dixieland to free jazz and ragtime to bebop. His compositions reﬂect his diverse musical tastes and abilities, combining the intricacies of Baroque counterpoint with the freedom of modern jazz. He has played with many nationally and internationally known artists, including Bernadette Peters, Rich Little and Hank Roberts.

The Chancel Choir of Yachats Community Presbyterian Church will present its Community Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 10, featuring seasonal music alongside handbells, conducted by Milo Graamans. The concert will begin at 2 pm at the church, 360 W 7th Street, with refreshments to follow. Admission is free but donations will be gratefully accepted for South Lincoln Resources. Trombonist “Jazzy” John Moak has performed with many notable artists including Dave Brubeck, Clark Terry and Louie Bellson. He has performed as a member of the Louie Bellson Big Band and Octet, the Clark Terry Quintet, the Portland Jazz Orchestra and with pop acts, Frankie Valli, Aretha Franklin and the Four Tops. Moak also appears on many recordings, most recently with Gino Vannelli. Sunday’s concert will run from 2:30 to 5:30 pm at a private home in Seal Rock. Admission is by a suggested donation of $15 to $30, with any proﬁts going toward the annual Spring Newport High School Jazz Clinic. Tickets, $1 apiece, will be for sale throughout the weekend. The drawing will take place at 2 pm on Sunday, Dec. 3, with the winner notified by phone. Toledo’s showing promise First Weekend event celebrates holiday season Toledo’s art community will celebrate the joy of the holiday season this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 2 and 3, with a festive First Weekend event entitled “Promise.” Guests at the Yaquina River Museum of Art will be able to view a collection of handcrafted items from Latin America, including original wood carvings, wool embroidery, dolls and painted art items. The collection, featuring items from Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Chile, is on loan from Judith Gibbons. Ikons, handpainted originals and reproductions from Greece, Portugal and the USA will be shown as well. The collection will be on display from noon to 5 pm both days at 151 NE Alder Street. Light refreshments will be served by the Friends of the Yaquina River Museum. The museum gift shop will be stocked with copies of a new DVD of the Yaquina Traveling Exhibit, a collection of landscapes painted by renowned oil painter Michael Gibbons. Gabriel Salcedo, composer of the original music for the DVD, will be playing Christmas classics on the keyboard each day from noon

Artists, will be displaying several new works that focus on the eﬀects of the Oregon Coast’s autumn storms. “Debris washed up from afar creates fascinating patterns in the sands of our Oregon Coast Paciﬁc Ocean,” Kelly said, “with the beachcombing gulls congregating in the hopes of catching fresh tidbits.”

Ivan Kelly Studio-Gallery will be open for light refreshments and artistic conversation from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday, Dec. 2, and noon to 5 pm on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 207 East Graham Street. On Main Street, Frank Jones will be featuring an exhibition of his signature black and white photography, showing the urban life of

1980s Portland. Jones’ eye perfectly captures the bluecollar cityscape that existed before the city underwent its rapid modernization. Jones will be playing live folk music to accompany his work from 10 am to 4 pm both days at Francyfolk Photos and Music, 227 S Main Street. Elsewhere on Main Street, Newport artist Gotard Gburczyk will be exhibiting original oil paintings and selected prints at Gallery Briseño. Gotard’s work is noted for realism with a touch of expressionism. Gotard will be available to chat with guests at an opening reception from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 359 N Main Street.

DEDICATION DAY IN NEWPORT The City of Newport will hold a dedication ceremony for three prints donated by the estate of late artist Andrew Rodman this Saturday, Dec. 2. Rodman, who died in January from

pancreatic cancer, was a creative writer, artist, musician and editor-in-chief of Oregon Tilth. He was well known for his writings, art and music. The three linoleum prints, entitled

“Board Wrecked,” “Undertow” and “The Dive,” are on display near the south entrance to the Newport City Hall. The dedication, which is open to all,
