from the editor

s the season of goodwill draws us all into its warm embrace I’d love to tell you that I have plans to spend the holidays doing something selfless for the good of the community. But the reality is that I will once again be spending Christmas in Mammoth Lakes, California, where the closest I’ll come to a good deed is doing my best to prevent assistant editor Quinn from smashing too many decorative table

lamps. For selfless community spirit, I recommend turning to page 8, where Dana Grae Kane shares some remarkable stories about people who have gone above and beyond to help animals in distress. Or try page 17 for the story about the big-hearted folks behind Operation Christmas Spirit, which offers a free Christmas dinner to all comers, no questions asked. If these stories move you to volunteer your time (or your money) to a worthy cause, please consider the Lincoln City Warming Shelter, which provides a hot meal and a warm bed to our most needy neighbors when the coastal weather is at its worst. Donations, which are tax deductible, can be mailed to PO Box 198, Lincoln City, 97367. If you can spare a few hours over the holidays, call volunteer co-ordinator Sharon Padilla at 541-992-5748. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

An uppercrustacean event Visitors to the Oregon Coast Aquarium will have something to sink their claws into this Wednesday, Dec. 27, as Crab Fisheries Day returns for another celebration of Oregon’s iconic Dungeness. Dungeness crab are sought after along the West Coast by humans and non-humans alike for their delicious and abundant meat. Some 14 million pounds of crab are landed each season from coastal Oregon and the Columbia River estuary, making it the most valuable single-species commercial fishery in the state. Crab Fisheries Day highlights the significance of crab to Oregon’s coastal economy and provides an in-depth look at these amphibious crustaceans.

“It is a day full of fun that is meant to increase awareness of Newport’s local Dungeness Crab Fishery,” said event organizer Sally Edwards. Throughout the day, aquarists will host crab presentations and dissections so that guests can get up close and personal with the crustaceans. Crab-themed kids’ activities include crafts, story-time and games. And guests can experience an extra taste of Crab Fisheries Day with a Dungeness crab special served up in the café. The event will also feature booths from the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission, Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, NOAA, Oregon State Parks, the Coast Guard

Axillary and Oregon State University’s Marine Resource Management Program. All aspects of Dungeness crab will be covered at their displays, from information on anatomy and behavior, to their role as one of Oregon’s most important commercial fisheries, to the marine and estuarine environments that nurture them. The day will conclude with a free raffle, testing guests’ newly acquired crab knowledge. Crab Fisheries Day activities are free with aquarium admission. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located at 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road. For more information, go to www.aquarium.org or call 541-867-3474.

Start the year on the strong track Strength training for middle-aged and older adults will be on offer in Tillamook and Netarts in the New Year with the return of the Strong Women & Strong People programs. The programs were developed at Tufts University, based upon research on how strength training improves bone density, reduces falls, alleviates arthritis symptoms and increases flexibility. The classes will run from January 22 through the end of March, with women-only sessions at the OSU Extension Office in Tillamook and a coed option in Netarts The Tillamook classes will run at 8 am, noon and 1:30 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Netarts class runs from 9 to 10 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Weights are provided and participants should wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. Classes are limited to 20 participants per session and registration is required one week prior to the class. New participants must complete the required screening and enrollment

forms and pay the $30 registration fee. All new participants attending sessions at the OSU Extension Office must attend the mandatory orientation from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Friday, Jan. 19, or schedule an appointment with the program coordinator, Nancy Kershaw at 503-8423433. Those over 70 or those with other chronic health conditions must obtain a release from their medical provider before starting the course. A card-carrying Christmas fan

C

hristmas in our house starts Thanksgiving weekend. That’s when I pull out the decorations, turn on the music, and, most importantly, order my Christmas cards — one of my favorite traditions of the season. This is the one time of the year when I forgo technology in favor of good old-fashioned pen and paper. I’m thinking mine is one of the last generations who grew up writing letters in longhand, sending them through the US mail for the cost of a stamp, then waiting for the reply, which rarely came quickly enough. It was how you stayed in touch and kept far-away friends and family up to date, while reassuring yourself that the big wide world was really not such a lonely place. Sure, you could call, but it wasn’t cheap — even if you waited until Sunday night when rates were lowest. As a student, I usually had a phone just long enough to run up a massive bill I couldn’t pay and then I was without a phone again. But letters could be sent for the cost of a couple coins. And, I see now that hand writing them made for a sense of intimacy, connection. In time, I typed the letters and then came computers and email, and the old-fashioned letters I’d started writing somewhere around the age of eight were forgotten. Except this one time of the year. I started writing Christmas cards after we left our friends and Chan’s family in Alaska and moved to the lower 48. I missed the old crowd, but also there was so much to tell. From the start I sent out upwards of 60 cards. I learned quick to buy them after Christmas for the following year when I could get them for at least 50-percent off. Sitting at the table in kitchens from one side of the country to the other and back, I’d write a personal note, sometimes a page or more, sharing the news of our year, our hopes for the coming one. One year, my mom bought me a lap desk from Levenger’s, a catalog company that specializes in accessories for writers. It is wood, just over 30 inches across, shaped like a fat crescent moon and meant to fit across your lap, with each end resting on the arms of the chair. It even has its own little wood stand, which it rests in vertically, prompting no end of questions over the years as to its use. I don’t recall the exact year she bought it for me, but I’m guessing the early ’90s. From then on, I traded the kitchen table for whatever happened to be my current favorite living room chair and I wrote, boxes of cards teetering on one end of the desk, my address book and the yellow notepad with the list of addressees at the other, me and the card in progress in the middle. Over the years, I got a little fussier about the cards I sent. For several years, all my cards were accented in glitter — woodsy scenes, winter city shots, mountain tableaux — all aglow with glitter.

101 tree ornament and realized it might make a cool card in its own right. I bundled an old miniature Christmas tree down to the dunes in South Beach, strung on a couple strands of garland, hung my single ornament and topped it with a star. And what do you know, coming from the noncrafty, minimally artistic me, it wasn’t bad. Every holiday season since, I’ve whiled away bored hours dreaming up the next year’s Christmas card. There was the year with the white and red tree on the ocean’s edge, ditto on the bridge to Ona Beach. There’ve been collages of us and the pups, and last year’s sunrise shot of the Yaquina Bay Bridge. This year’s card was decided before most had even put away last year’s decorations. That was early January when we got a measurable amount of snow and I shot a picture of Luna standing in it like a little snow queen. My sister used an app to enhance it with a glow of swirling flakes and the shot for the Christmas card of 2017 was ready. I even ordered them early this year. And so I passed the cool winter evenings, Mom’s gift on my lap, a fire in the woodstove and my heart content with the spirit of Christmas. They sparkled and shimmered; and made a mess. Then came the year when I bought the Highway

Find your pet project

By Dana Grae Kane eeling our love for animals well up while petting some cute, cuddly creature requires no effort on our part whatsoever. In fact, it’s uncontrollable. However, actually putting our love into action by providing care and funding for animals, especially those in need of rescue and rehabilitation, is harder work than most of us can imagine. The wonderful people who dedicate their time and treasure to helping animals in need know this requires the ultimate in commitment and determination. While all attest to the boundless rewards, many of the situations confronting professionals and volunteers alike are heartbreaking, and all of them are expensive. In my personal work on behalf of animals throughout my life, it has been my great privilege to have known several splendid animal advocates and caretakers. One of these was my late husband, who as a young man in New York witnessed a neighbor, who could well-afford to pay a vet, consciously run over a dog and drive on, leaving the dog in agony. My Guy-To-Be (MGTB) scooped up the dog and rushed it to a vet, who could do nothing but put the dog out of its misery. MGTB then bought a full-page ad in The New York Times (not an inexpensive thing to do), showing a graphic photo of the mangled dog, quoting the testimony of the vet in gruesome detail, and listing the name, address and license number of the murderer, whose social and business connections instantly disappeared. Satisfying, indeed, but, my future husband wasn’t finished yet. He took the callous criminal to court, winning a large financial contribution to the local Humane Society. You can see why MGTB became my husband... Many years later, my husband and I were on our front porch in West Los Angeles, he dressed in his only good suit, garnered from our favorite thrift shop, on his way to a crucial job interview. At that moment, two very good neighbors happened to meet on the sidewalk while walking their dogs. The dogs, one very large and one very small, were friendly and familiar with each other. The bigger dog extended a paw to play when an errant nail snagged and scooped out the right eye of the little dog. The eye was suspended by a single strand of tissue just below the socket, blood poured out, the little dog went into shock

and the young owner of the little dog was screaming hysterically, as was the horrified owner of the large dog. My husband instantly picked up the bloody dog, buttoned it inside his suit jacket, thumbed the eye back in the socket, held the lid closed with one hand and scooped up the trembling owner under his other arm. Off we raced to the vet, who was not able to save the eye, but was able to save the rest of the dog. The owner of the large dog happily paid the vet bill and the owner of the little dog was immeasurably grateful. As to the little dog, thereafter she fashionably

sported a wardrobe of decorative eye patches, including one we made for her in the shape of a Purple Heart, just like the one my husband received when he lost his right eye. The suit died in a good cause. Another such compassionate person was Phil, our neighbor in San Francisco, who rescued two greatly undernourished cats, as small as kittens, cruelly tied to a storm grating. Phil had been very badly injured when the power steering system of the truck he drove professionally suddenly failed, forcing him to use all his strength to steer

it away from a group of children, tearing his back to bits. Thus, he walked slowly and painfully, supported by two golf club canes, and wore massive steel-toed work boots to help maintain his balance. Phil could not bend over to pet or pick up his beloved adoptees, christened Striper and Peanut, and they were damaged such that despite all his good care, they remained weak, able to climb,

commentary but not walk far. However, the ingenious adoptees knew just what do. Each boarded a toe of Phil’s boots, facing his ankles, claws hooked into his pant legs, riding along as he lumbered about the house and yard. When important matters such as food, treats and naps arose, they would climb up the clothing ladder to Phil’s shoulders and screech simultaneously into his ears, possibly the world’s only stereophonic feline headphones. Another animal-befriending person, one of the true gentle giants of the earth, was my friend, Big Rich, who recently passed away. In his lifetime he adopted, nursed back to health and cared for several abandoned dogs. During some difficult years, his home was his old Toyota, where he and successive dogs lived by the fish he expertly caught, trading them for other foodstuffs and supplies. When meal times came around the dog always ate first and well, and Rich last or not at all. One of Big Rich’s rescues was PeeWee, an adult Chihuahua the size of a runt-of-the-litter pup, starved when young just as Striper and Peanut above had been. Big Rich, at 6’8” and about 280 lbs., wore a shirt of some infinite number of XXXXXXLLLLLLs, the front pocket of which accommodated itty-bitty PeeWee, who spent many happy years viewing the world over the edge of her cozy high-rise condo. Big Rich’s last rescue, Peaches, also a Chihuahua, is safe in the loving arms of Rich’s beloved, my good friend, Rose. Rest in peace, Big Rich; job well done. At the opposite end of the physical spectrum was a thin, frail San Francisco animal advocate, my friend Jane, who helped every animal ever to cross her path. Jane had had polio as a child and from her 50s on suffered from the muscular wasting of postpolio syndrome. Always in great pain, and additionally burdened with panic disorder, Jane was able to leave her home only for short periods of time, finding all motion of her legs excruciating and exhausting, and all ventures outside terrifying. Consequently, a huge undertaking for her was a brief visit the nearby Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park where we watched the beautiful koi, as long as two feet and beefy, competing avidly for touristtossed treats. On one occasion, Jane spotted a tiny, thin koi about four inches long, off in the backwater away from the roiling behemoths, trying desperately to suck in food and for some reason being unable to do it, even though the food was right about three inches from its mouth. Jane, who normally could not walk more than 10 feet without sitting down to rest and could not traverse even small pebbles steadily, climbed over the large boulders lining the pond, lay down on her stomach on the one closest to the water,

dragged the floating food over to the little fish using her cane and with the rubber tip gently shoved the goodies into the gaping maw. For whatever reason, this did the trick. The mini-mite was able after that to slurp up all the leftovers that drifted within range. As we left, we looked back and saw that the little finster was sucking down crumbs a mile a minute, a veritable piscine vacuum cleaner on his way to fat-fishdom. This monumental effort cost Jane not merely several days of intense pain and exhaustion, but the permanent loss of some of her little remaining muscle power. She was fully aware this would be the price of her kindness before she took this selfless action and never afterward felt it was not entirely worthwhile. We, too, can do our part, this Christmas and all year long. We can adopt a rescue, saving a life and striking a blow against puppy and kitten mills in one fell swoop. We can volunteer at a profit-dedicated thrift shop and join the foster parents who socialize young animals to make them more adoptable. We can assist cash-strapped seniors, who desperately need animal companions but often cannot afford to maintain them, with pet supplies and transportation to the vet, and by donating to the MAX Fund, which helps with vet expenses. We can offer to watch the pets of people who must be away from home for serious medical appointments, thus relieving at least some of their stress. We can give a meaningful holiday gift by donating to any and all of the organizations listed above in honor or memory of a beloved person or pet. In these ways we create and become part of the “shelter of compassion and pity,” in the true Spirit of Christmas.

Yes, we SCAN Broaden your horizons with Winter Whale Watch Week By Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY

J

am-packed airports and highways have become part of the holiday tradition in America. But if you think the departure lounge at PDX is crowded, just be thankful that there’s a coffee shop nearby. No such luxuries are on hand for gray whales, who barely stop to eat as they tackle their annual 12,000-mile migration from the Arctic Ocean to lagoons off the coast of Mexico, where the females give birth in the warmer waters. The migration, which sees an estimated 20,000 whales making their way along the Oregon Coast during a four-week period, is the reason behind the Winter Whale Watch Week, organized by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD). From Wednesday, Dec. 27, through Sunday, Dec, 31, OPRD will set up 24 observation stations at state parks and headlands along the coast, with 22 in Oregon and one apiece in California and Washington. At each site, trained volunteers are on hand to help people maximize their chances of seeing some of the Baja-bound giants. The program is headquartered in the Photo by Carrie Newell

OPRD’s Whale Watching Center in Depoe Bay, which, in addition to helpful staff, boasts a wealth of interpretive displays about whales and other marine life. Ranger Luke Parsons said whales passing Depoe Bay tend to swim between one and three miles offshore. He recommends that whale watchers scan the horizon with the naked eye at first, looking for the spout — the release of air that can send water shooting 12 feet into the air. “Each one of their lungs is the size of your household refrigerator, so that’s a lot of air that comes rushing out,” he said. “Once you see that spout, you can bring the binoculars up to get a closer look.” Parsons said he is hoping for calm weather to give watchers the best possible spotting conditions. Large screens within the center allow staff and volunteers to bring up video from the center’s cameras for everyone to see. And this year people from around the world can join in, with the center live-streaming the footage on its Facebook page. Elsewhere on the Central Coast, headlands have historically topped the list of whale sightings, with Cape Lookout near Tillamook and Cape Foulweather just south of Depoe Bay leading the rankings. And if you spot better with a martini in your hand, nowhere quite compares to Fathoms Restaurant & Bar on the 10th floor of the Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City.

Occasionally, if the whales are a little closer to shore, watchers will be able to see their backs when they come out of the water. And very occasionally, a patient watcher might be rewarded with the Holy Grail of whale watching — a breach, where the whale thrusts its body out of the water. The sheer size of the gray whale makes even a partial breach quite a feat. Full size females reach 45 feet in length, the size of a yellow school bus, and weigh in at 70,000 pounds. Males tend to be smaller at roughly 35 feet long. The whale watching sites are open from 10 am to 1 pm every day throughout Winter Whale Watch Week, with volunteers clearly identified by a placard reading “whale watching spoken here.” For people who want a closer look at the passing giants, the prospect of a boat trip into the path of the migration is complicated only by the December weather. While several operators, offer boat trips when weather is fair, a winter storm can put such excursions off limits while the ocean is rough and for days afterward. Whale Research EcoExcursions, offers whale-watching trips in former Coast Guard Zodiacs, in a close-to-the-water trip that puts passengers face-to-face with the whales. (Fun fact: one of those Zodiacs used to belong to cocktail-loving crooner Jimmy Buffet). To check availability, call the museum at 541-912-6734.

Meanwhile, Dockside Charters invites whale watchers to take to the waters aboard a 50-footer with heated cabin, indoor seating and a restroom. To check availability, call Dockside Charters at 541-765-2545.

A hot Christmas dinner will be on offer to all this Monday, Dec. 25, as Operation Christmas Spirit swings into action at the Lincoln City Community Center. Staff from Chinook Winds Casino Resort are spearheading the event, supported by generous local volunteers and businesses. Lincoln City resident Betty Fry founded the event several years ago to feed people that might otherwise have a bleak and hungry holiday, or simply would otherwise be alone for their holiday meal. Operation Christmas Spirit is now sponsored by Chinook Winds Casino Resort, Lincoln City Community Center and North Lincoln Sanitary Service, which provides free garbage pick-up after the event. Families and individuals are welcome at the heartwarming celebration, which includes Christmas music and a complete hot holiday meal, offered from 10 am to 1 pm at the center, 2150 NE Oar Place. The program still needs desserts to round out the tasty holiday meal. Organizers said

Bold = Minus Tides. Tide tables are for recreational use. If you’re piloting the “Costa Concordia II” in front of your college roommate’s oceanfront bungalow at Otter Crest or Cape Lookout, talk to a harbormaster. Tide info courtesy tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. If you discover a seal pup or other stranded marine animal on the beach, do not approach, touch, or pour water on the animal. Instead, call 800-452-7888. Keep dogs leashed and far from all marine mammals. Japanese Tsunami Debris Info: Information on significant marine debris sightings on the coast can be reported to the NOAA Marine Debris Program at DisasterDebris@noaa.gov.

Explore the power of the Dark Side By Jo Ann Campbell

Art in the spotlight Watercolors by Jo Ann Campbell hang alongside fused glass pieces by Mary Young in the latest Spotlight Show from Newport’s Yaquina Art Association. Originally from New Jersey, Jo Ann Campbell retired to Arizona after a career spent at a nuclear power station. Always full of adventure, she and her husband left Arizona and traveled about the USA in a motor home, ending up in Newport in 2002. Mary Young has been creating fused glass art for 10 years and enjoys the constant surprises, playing with color and making happy things. The interest in glass started with her father, who bought a glass kiln to experiment with. It just took off from there: exploring, trying new techniques and just playing around. Born in Seattle, Young has lived in Newport for 11 years and has been a member of the Yaquina Art Association since 2007. The show will be on display through Friday, Dec. 29, available to view from 11 am to 4 pm daily at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery, 789 NW Beach Drive.

While the battle between the forces of light and the Dark Side is playing out on screens across the country in the new “Star Wars” movie, there’s another place where you can see a much calmer interplay between the two. Light and dark are the central theme of “Chiaroscuro,” the new exhibit from the Northwest Mosaic Art Alliance, currently on show at Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery. “Chiaroscuro” shows how contemporary artists are reinvigorating the ancient art of mosaic — combining traditional and non-traditional materials to create astonishing new work. The exhibit explores the nature of light and dark, how shadows are cast by the materials in the works, and how mosaic materials either reflect or absorb light. Both abstract and representational pieces will be on show. The Northwest Mosaic Art Alliance is a group of artist colleagues and friends living in Oregon and Washington who work in the broad medium of mosaic. They met through membership in the Society of American Mosaic Artists. Over

the years, they have grown and deepened their artistic practices from self-taught beginners exploring a new medium to successful professionals, exhibiting, teaching and presenting worldwide. The mission of the group is to help elevate the status of the mosaic medium by exhibiting widely and exposing more people to their art. Collectively, this group is well known among mosaic artists worldwide. They have exhibited in prestigious venues in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia and have won awards in juried exhibitions. Alliance members include Lynn Adamo of Bend; Mark Brody and Scott Fitzwater of Portland; Joanne Daschel of Lincoln City; Karen Rycheck of Talent, Oregon; Richard Davis of Clinton, Washington; Jennifer Kuhns of Elma, Washington; and Jo Braunand and Kelley Knickerbocker of Seattle. “Chiaroscuro” will run through Monday, Jan. 9, available to view from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Tuesdays at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, call 541-994-9994.
