I
’m the first to admit that the range of what people call fun is as vast as the ocean. For some, the idea of jumping into a body of water during one of the coldest times of the year sounds pretty nutty. But there is a reason that organized “polar plunges,” usually taking place on New Year’s Day, tend to grow fast once they get started. Just ask Janice Gaines, who, with five friends, decided take a quick jump into the ocean at Manzanita in 2005. The tradition continued without any formal organization or promotion, growing primarily through word of mouth. “Last year we had between three and four hundred people,” Gaines said. “I’ve never actively tried to grow the event; all I am is a person who jumps in the ocean every once a year, and people are welcome join me.” You can join Gaines and friends in the Pacific, or take the plunge after warming up with a run first at the Newport Resolution Run and Polar Bear Plunge, but either way you will be coming out of the ocean dripping and grinning like a person who has already fulfilled a New Year’s resolution to let your inner child loose a bit more often.
Manzanita Polar Plunge 11 am, Monday, Jan. 1 If this is your first time attending the event, which takes place at the north end of Manzanita Beach, don’t simply arrive and start running into the water. “We like to gather for a group photo, then we all go out together,” Gaines said. “One year everyone took off and we didn’t get the photo, and that’s the most important thing.” One of the things that makes the photos memorable is that, every year, more people wear fun costumes. “I love that people are starting to dress up for this,” Gaines said. “Although of course much of it comes right back off again before people go into the ocean. But the event is just pure and simple fun and really starts off the year right.” The fun people have doing what at first seems miserable is what Gaines attributes to the growth of the event.
Though the spirit is still that of starting the new year off right, this isn’t necessarily a first day of the year event. “This is a running race with a polar plunge, not the other way around,” said organizer Ed Cortes. “We schedule the run for the first Saturday of the year. Last year, that happened to coincide with New Year’s Day, and we had a big dip in registrations. Guess people didn’t want to get up and go run after a night of celebrating. This year, registrations are right back up again — actually we’re up in numbers already.” The first resolution run took place in 2013, and the polar plunge was into the Yaquina Bay. This year, for the second time, the race will end with a run into the Pacific. “The Port of Newport got rid of the ramp where we used to plunge,” Cortez said. “I think a few people are a bit more intimidated to run into the ocean, but others really love it. Plus, we got some great photos last year and I’m sure we will again this year.” As well as some great photos, runners who finish any of the three options on offer will start the year with a large locally themed finishers medal. The race includes a half marathon distance, which begins at 9 am. The 5k and 10k races will start at 10 am. All races start and end at the far end of the Newport jetty, but packet pickup and race day registration will take place at the Rogue Brewery. “This time of year, it’s really hard to ask volunteers to stand out in the elements,” Cortes said. “This way they can be in a covered area, and after the race, the runners can come for post-race refreshments and the awards ceremony at the same spot.” Some of the volunteers that runners will see on the courses will be members of the Newport High School cross country team, which will be getting part of the proceeds from the race. As someone who ran the 5k distance and then ran into the ocean at last year’s event, I have one very important piece of advice — bring a full set of clothes to change into. Other than that, it was one of the funnest things I did all year. Online registration is open until Friday, Jan. 5; race day registration is available for all distances. Calling in the top brass When it comes to New Year’s celebrations on the Oregon Coast, you don’t get much more exclusive than the Lincoln Pops Big Band New Year’s Eve dance at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Tickets for the event are capped at 100 tickets to make sure that everyone has ample room to take to the dance floor and swing their way into 2018. The 24-piece big band, led by John Bringetto, has evolved into one of the finest big bands in Oregon and is dedicated to preserving and passing along the heritage of the big band era. Members include a crosssection of the community with musicians aged from 16 to 80, including several talented local high school students as well as professionals. With five saxophones, six trumpets,
four trombones, piano, guitar, bass, drums, congas, vibraphone and three vocalists, the Pops put on a dynamic show. As well as Christmas music, the band will be playing music from the swing era, Latin, blues and hard-driving jazz. While the forecast for Saturday, Dec. 30, warns of cold weather with a chance of showers, the atmosphere inside Newport’s CafĂŠ Mundo will be warm with a certainty of paella, as coastal impresario Jose Solano presents a Spanish-themed dinner-show. Solano is coming out of retirement to lend his amenco guitar skills to a show that will feature the talents of guitarist and oud player Nat Hulskamp and Morrocan vocalist Lamiae Naki alongside amenco dancer Sophia Solano. In addition to amenco songs, Naki has a wide repertoire of Mediterranean songs that are foundational to the development of amenco and the music of Southern Spain. She and Hulskamp recorded their new album, “De Fez a Jerez,â€? in Spain with amenco living legends Tomasa La Macanita, Diego del Morao and Luis PerikĂn. Copies of the album will be available to buy on the night. Sophia Solano studied amenco with dancer and singer Rafaela de CĂĄdiz and at the University of Sevilla, Spain. The troupe will perform

CafĂŠ Mundo Chef Laurie Card will serve up a threecourse, Spanish-inspired menu topped by paella (including a vegetarian version upon request), arugula salad with pears and Manchego
cheese, and Spanish almond cake. Tickets for dinner and the show are $35 apiece. A full bar is available. The restaurant’s lower oor will be open for those who just wish to listen for a $5 cover fee, with food from the regular menu available to order. A spot-on presentation Sign up now to beat the brush A pair of free new art classes will be on offer starting Tuesday, Jan. 2, at the Newport 60+ Activity Center, with students having a choice between colored pencils and watercolors. The six-session colored pencil art class will run from 1 to 2:30 pm each Tuesday, with instructor Shirley Steinhauer helping

Bone up on exercise techniques A new exercise class is on offer at the Newport 60+ Activity Center, aimed at slowing bone loss and improving balance to prevent falls. “Better Bones and Balance” classes are now offered from 5:30 to 6:30 pm every Monday as well as from 12:30 to 1:30 pm Wednesdays and Fridays. The coming of winter to Cape Perpetua Scenic Area means massive visitors are not far behind, as thousands of Gray whales make their way south to the warm waters of Mexico. This Saturday, Dec. 30, retired Chief park ranger Michael Noack will give a free presentation entitled
“Experiencing Gray Whales,” aimed at getting people familiar with gray whales and ways to locate them. The presentation will begin at 11:30 am in the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center, located three miles south of Yachats. After the program, Noak will be available to discuss whale watch
techniques that have worked for him. Attending the presentation is free, but a day-use fee or recreation pass is required within the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Monday, Jan. 1. For more information, call 541-547-3289.

Pacific City-based fiber artist Karen Gelbard will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Jan. 4, Coastal Arts Guild lunch in Newport. Gelbard is a renowned fiber artist whose work reflects the colors and textures of the Pacific Northwest. Since 1997, her designs and craftmanship have been getting attention and awards from across the United States. “I design, weave, cut and sew hand-woven jackets, coats and scarves,” she said, “and wherever these garments go, they will tell an Oregon story.” Gelbard graduated in 1974 from the University of Kansas
with a bachelor’s degree in design. From there, she turned her creative focus to color and texture using fiber. She has also worked on projects at the historic Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood and on was commissioned to assist in design and fabrication of 44 rugs in the main lodge at Sunriver. Ring in the new and (hopefully) improved 2018, with the Lincoln Pops Orchestra and the Lincoln City Cultural Center. The Pops, a 25-member band that specializes in Big Band classics, Latin dance orchestrations and other feel-good tunes, will be playing from 8:30 to midnight Saturday, Dec. 31. Tickets include light appetizers, four sets of live music and a midnight toast of champagne or sparkling cider. $45 per person, $80 for couples.
