LINCOLN CITY — We’ve all had New Year’s Eve experiences that left us wishing for a do-over. Normally, once the clock strikes midnight, you are out of luck. But not this year at Chinook Winds Casino Resort, which is oering two chances to bid farewell to 2016 and ring in 2017 with a double dose of “Under the Seaâ€?-themed fun this Friday and Saturday. NEWPORT — Seattle will be a silent place this New Year’s Eve if the lineup at CafÊ Mundo is anything to go by. With Mts. & Tunnels, Norman Baker and the Backroads Duo and The Conrad Brudi Band making the journey
south from the Emerald City, we can’t help but imagine forlorn Seattleites gathered in a quiet Space Needle ans having to resort to an acapella version of “Auld Lang Syne. See page 20

LINCOLN CITY — And if CafÊ Mundo is draining music from the north, Hearth & Table is siphoning avors from the south for their all-day brunch this New Year’s Eve. THE ICY PACIFIC — There’s no better way to wave goodbye to 2016 than with a New Year’s Day dip into the surf. With ocean plunges taking place in Newport, Oceanside and Manzanita, you are never more than a few miles from a moment of icy insanity on the Central Oregon Coast. See page 9

An Eve-volving celebration
y parents were not big New Year’s Eve people. My dad was always in bed early and while my mom would occasionally sit up with us to watch Dick Clark in Times Square, there was no big party or Champagne popping. I found this disappointing. I wanted them to get dressed up, be festive, act a little silly for a change. Once I was out on my own, I began celebrating the last day of the year with a vengeance. Of course, what I loved most was the dressing up, the toasts, and all the drippy “Auld Lang Syne” sentimentality of the night. In Anchorage, there were a handful of couples who always got together and I remember the most important part of the night was to be with your guy for the kiss at midnight. After we married, our celebrations grew more festive. One year we took the party train from Anchorage to Whittier. Once in Whittier, we gathered in some sort of big open hall to dance and dine. Most of the partiers were young and it wasn’t long before we grew bored. I have no idea whose idea it
was but at some point about eight of us — strangers until that night — commandeered a small bread truck and took a little drive. Before long, a police officer pulled us over and suggested we might like to buy tickets to the morning pancake feed (never mind we would be long gone), then sent us — still driving the bread truck — on our way. At the time, the only way in or out of Whittier was train or boat so it wasn’t like we were going anywhere. Back in the Lower 48, we spent New Year’s Eve in Times Square, which is crazy and fun and yes, does kind of make you feel like a sitting duck. From the east, we moved to Seattle and you can’t live in Seattle and not go to the Space Needle for the New Year’s Eve party at least once. There was plenty of Champagne and big sheets of paper on which to write whatever sappy sentiment you wanted to share. I don’t remember what I wrote, only that I kept thinking of new things to add. In Colorado, we tended to spend the holiday at one ski resort or another. One of
the most memorable was not New Year’s Eve, but New Year’s Eve day. That was the morning, my hubs and his friend headed out early in hopes of carving some of the first tracks in the almost two feet of fresh powder. I was just evolving from skiing the beginner green slopes to the more advanced gentle blues. I’d planned to sleep in, but then I recalled hearing how great powder is to ski and decided I should check it out. I jumped on the lift to the top of a blue run where I discovered A) it had not been groomed, and B) powder (up to your thighs) is only fun if you’re a damned good skier. Meanwhile, the hubs had gone back to the room to tell me that under no circumstances was I to attempt to ski. But of course, I was already gone. Hardest run I’ve ever skied in my life. All around me, disgruntled skiers were shedding their skis and walking, which hardly looked easier. I fell and eventually got back up, fell and got back up, fell … And that’s how I made it to the bottom where the hubs watched grimly, convinced I would never ski again.
What should have been the biggest party night, New Year’s Eve 1999, was actually pretty depressing. I was at the Rocky Mountain News and it was decreed we would all work. You know, in case the world ended so we could report on it. I’ve since spent a New Year’s Eve in Puerto Vallarta, where they have the most amazing fireworks, and we occasionally find ourselves in our favorite motel in Manzanita, noted for its midnight parade from the pub to the beach. I’m generally on the corner to greet everyone with party horns and my own hearty “Happy New Year.” Of course, in order to make midnight, I must first take a nap, and the dressing up part generally involves jeans, slippers and whatever nightshirt I happen to have on hand. But I still have my glass of bubbly and I still feel a certain sentimental twinge. Lori Tobias is the author of the novel “Wander” and a journalist of many years. Follow her at loritobias.com.

Step into 2017 The Yachats Coastal Gems walking group will gather in Toledo this Tuesday, Jan. 3, for a stroll around the new Toledo Ridge and River route. This 10K walk includes some hilly areas and would be difficult for wheelchairs or strollers. Since the route is divided into three separate loops, it is easy to modify the distance for folks who want a shorter walk. Walkers can carpool from the Yachats
Commons at 9 am, or meet at the JC Thriftway in Toledo at 10 am. Leashed pets are welcome as long as owners bring water, clean up materials and a sturdy 6-foot leash. For more information, call Gene and Linda Williamson in Seal Rock at 541-563-6721 or Maryann Brown in Waldport at 541-961-4279 or go to www.yachatscoastalgems.org.

Time is running out to register for the 2017 Master Gardener programs offered by Oregon State University Extension Services in Tillamook and Newport. The Master Gardener program educates Oregonians about the art and science of growing and caring for plants and, in doing so, facilitates the training of a highly educated corps of volunteers. These volunteers then extend sustainable gardening information to their communities through education and outreach programs. Anyone with a sincere interest in gardening and desire to help the community is welcome. The Tillamook course begins on Thursday, Jan. 5, with classes every Thursday through
March 30. Tuition is $120, plus a required commitment to serve 60 volunteer hours on community gardening projects. Scholarships may be available. To register, download an application form at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/tillamook, drop by the OSU Extension Service at 2204 4th Street, Tillamook, or call 503-842-3433. The Newport course begins on Tuesday, Jan. 10, with classes every Tuesday through March. Tuition for the Newport course is $220. To register, download an application form at extension.oregonstate.edu/Lincoln/master_ gardeners, drop by the OSU Extension Office at 1211 SE Bay Blvd., Newport, or call 541574- 6534.
Exercise, companionship and reflection will come together for an inspiring start to 2017 at the Seventh Annual Yachats New Year’s Day Peace Hike this Sunday, Jan. 1. Each year, the hike honors the memory of a blind Native American woman known as Amanda, who was forced to leave her young daughter and march barefoot through rocky terrain to the Alsea Sub-agency internment camp in Yachats in 1864. In preparation for the hike, Doc Slyter, elder, tribal flutist and Tribal Council member for the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians will tell Amanda’s story at the Yachats Commons and introduce the fire ceremony that follows.

Hikers will then set out along the 804 Trail before connecting to the Gerdemann Botanic Preserve public footpath and moving on to the Ya’Xaik trail. From there, they will again connect to the 804 and loop back to the commons, or can catch a shuttle back. The overall hike is 3.5 miles but the various segments enable all participants to choose the terrains and duration best suited to their abilities — from the flat surface of the 804 to the moderately strenuous inclines and stairs on the Ya’Xaik. There are also indoor activities planned for those who prefer to wait in the commons for hikers to return. Upon returning to the
commons, participants will have the opportunity to reflect, enjoy refreshments and pick up their collectable Peace Hike pins. The image for the 2017 pin was created by the Siuslaw National Forest 2015 artist-in-residence, Colleen Caubin. She and 2014 artistin-residence Margie Lopez Reid will both be on hand for a silent auction and to show their work. Native American flute and other music will be provided by Doc Slyter and Mary Beth Nickel. The event will begin at 10 am at the commons, 441 N. Hwy. 101. For more information, contact Joanne Kittel at jnkittel@peak.org or 541547-3144 or go to www. yachatstrails.org.
Enjoy some blue talk in Newport A Thursday, Jan. 5, presentation in Newport aims to help beachgoers get a handle on the health of local beaches and nearshore waters. Vince Pappalardo of the Surfrider Foundation’s Newport Chapter will talk about the group’s Blue Water Task Force, which tests local water quality, cleans up beaches and helps shape local marine policy. There will be an emphasis on the water quality testing work in terms of what is tested and the current state of water quality at the five to 10 sites tested weekly. Pappalardo holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from
San Jose State University and has been a professional mechanical engineer for 29 years. Passionate about surfing, he has been an active member of the Newport Surfrider Chapter for the past 10 years. In that time, he has served as the beach cleanup coordinator, Blue Water Task Force coordinator and volunteer coordinator. The presentation, hosted by the MidCoast Watersheds Council, will start at 6:30 pm in the public meeting room at the Central Lincoln PUD building, located at 2129 N Coast Hwy., across from the Safeway complex. Refreshments will be served.
A Tai Chi twofer After all other excuses have failed, the last resort of the procrastinator is to wail “Well, I don’t want to go to that class all on my own!” Now, a community Tai Chi course in Hebo has removed the last obstacle preventing shy newbies from trying their hand at the ancient martial art, by offering two-for-one registration at its upcoming class. Tai Chi concentrates on relieving the physical effects of stress and offers a holistic approach to wellness, connecting body, mind and spirit. In addition, the regular practice of Tai Chi can have favorable effects on balance, flexibility, energy and cardiovascular fitness. The class, teaching the Yang Family Style Short Form, will run from 10 to 11 am every Tuesday and Thurday from January 3 through March 30 at the Nestucca Rural Fire Hall Community Room, 30710 Hwy. 101. Classes are taught by Linda Werner, a certified Tai Chi instructor and former instructor for the Tillamook Family YMCA program, Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance and the Short Form. A special New Year’s offer allows two students to sign up for the price of one — just $60 for the 13-week term. For more information, contact Werner at 503-398-5223.
DIP INTO CHIP
Offering a chip to someone who’s on a diet might seem like the essence of cruelty, until you realize that this CHIP stands for Complete Health Improvement Program and could be the key to losing weight, lowering blood pressure and helping the heart. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 3 and 4, physicians and other volunteer staff from Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital will offer an introduction to the program in Lincoln City. CHIP is a simple 30-day lifestyle education program that helps participants discover ways to take charge of their health with safe, simple and deliberate lifestyle
choices. The program begins with a comprehensive health screening followed by twohour evening meetings on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for five weeks. Each meeting includes discussion and videos on topics including heart disease, diet and exercise along with a delicious meal prepared by the group leaders. The free information session will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and again on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at 6 pm at the Seventh-day Adventist Church Fellowship Hall, 2335 NE 22nd Street, Lincoln City. Tuition is charged for the CHIP sessions, with discounts available for accompanying spouses or

friends. Some scholarships are available. For more information or to
register, call 541-994-5151. To learn more about CHIP, go to chiphealth.com.
Join a movement, in Newport A new movement class at the Newport 60+ Activity Center combines elements of yoga, Tai-Chi and chair dance to help students improve flexibility, strength and balance. Led by certified Tai Chi instructor Jenica Herndon, the Movement for Improvement class is open to all, but is particularly recommended for people with Parkinson’s Disease. With Parkinson’s there is a reduction in the production of dopamine in the brain, meaning impulses don’t travel as they should, often affecting gait, balance and flexibility. Movement and dance can help increase production of dopamine, thus helping to slow the progress of the disease. The class will begin on Friday, Jan. 6, with sessions from 1:45 to 2:45 pm every Friday. For more information or to sign up, drop by the center at 20 SE 2nd Street or call 541-265-9617.

6ZDS Ă€DVKHV IRU VSODVKHV ZLWK WKH FRDVWÂśV 1HZ <HDU GXQNV Whether it was the deaths of David Bowie and Prince, the onslaught of miserable international news or an election that surpassed an already-high standard for absurdity, there were lots of reasons that 2016 might have made you want to run screaming into the ocean. Of course, the trick is to make sure that you remember to run back out again and return to shore invigorated for the challenges and delights that 2017 has in store. The Central Oregon Coast oers three chances to celebrate New Year’s Day with the icy kiss of the PaciďŹ c Ocean, with coldwater dunks taking place in Newport, Oceanside and Manzanita. This year marks the ďŹ rst time that Newport’s popular Resolution Run & Polar Bear Plunge will culminate with an optional dip into the ocean. Previous runs have ended with a plunge into Newport Harbor. Now in its ďŹ fth year, the run oers 5K, 10K and half marathon options as well as a kids run, with all routes starting at SW Jetty Way, just south of the Yaquina Bay Bridge, at 9 am for the half marathon and 10 am for all other runs. All routes also end at SW Jetty Way, giving runners the option of diving into the ocean in the sheltered nook to the south of the jetty. Last year, two thirds of runners opted for the harbor dip and organizers are hoping the PaciďŹ c will prove even more tempting. Afterward, all participants are invited to a post-run

the Tillamook County Family YMCA will be welcoming 2017 with its Third Annual Polar Plunge. At 10 am, dunkers will assemble for the brisk community dip at the Oceanside Beach State Recreation Site, more commonly known as the Oceanside Wayside, located about 10 miles west of Tillamook. YMCA sta will be on hand to serve hot chocolate, coee and treats and provide a bonďŹ re or two to help revelers warm up after their chilly swim. Rounding out the coldwater trio is Manzanita’s Polar Plunge, which has been clearing the heads and raising goose bumps ever since organizer Janice Gaines ďŹ rst took the plunge accompanied by three friends and a dog more than a decade ago. The plunge, which takes place near Gaines’ home at
Neahkahnie Beach, now draws about a hundred participants a year, with some driving from Portland to take part. Gaines, who owns Spa Manzanita, said many folks who spectate one year go on to take part the next. “Once you do it, it just puts a smile on your face. I mean, it’s just nothing but exhilaration,â€? she said, adding: “Thinking about it is harder — much harder — than doing it.â€? In order to build that sense of anticipation, all participants are required to gather on the beach for a preplunge group photo before setting o toward the water together at 11 am sharp. “What’s really kind of trippy is when it’s low tide and it takes forever to get to the water,â€? Gaines said. “You start out running like a bat out of hell and by the time you are halfway there, you are

a thirst for excitement and partly to a desire to reconnect with nature. “It’s something about life renewing, she said. “It’s just so energizing. For more information, call Spa Manzanita at 503-3684777.

Photos with focus An exhibit of photographic and watercolor impressions by Dr. Bob Riggs will be on display throughout January at Newport’s Canyon Way Bookstore and Restaurant. Riggs, a doctor of divinity, has been a photographic artist for many years. This is his first major show since his 2012 return to Newport from Princeton, New Jersey, where he operated a 300-yearold inn servicing Princeton University. Since returning to Oregon Riggs has added watercolors to his body of work, weaving the two media together in a style he calls “mingled and matched.” “I see my photographic work as a lamp of light captured for that moment in time and place,” he said, “then
reflected to you the viewer to find what you will.” Riggs said the Newport exhibit is a slight variation on his shows in Princeton and his display of photographic art in London. It includes “Panes of Life,” a series of photographs shot with a 35 mm camera through various panes of glass — leaded, cracked, etched and painted — and presented

without the use of postproduction techniques. Also on display is “Oeuvre,” a collection of photographic prints that Riggs created throughout a 20-year period traveling the country for his bed and breakfast business, often way off the beaten path. New to Riggs’ body of work is “Mingled-Matched,” pieces that feature photographs placed against a background of almost primitive watercolors. “It is said that all fixed pictures have edges which are not seen — only imagined to the viewer,” Riggs said. “I have added yet another dimension to that giving the viewer more imagination space to ‘see.’” Rounding out the exhibit is “Integrity,” an original oilbased giclée print on canvas.
A portion of all sales from the exhibit will go toward Riggs’ favored Newport charities, which have included Children’s Advocacy Center,
My Sisters’ Place and Peace Villages. Riggs’ work can be seen online at SaatchiArt.com and FineArtAmerica.com by
searching for “bob riggs” as well as “rj riggs.” Canyon Way Bookstore and Restaurant is located at 1216 SW Canyon Way.

Firing up the audience The art of fire painting will take center stage in Newport on Thursday, Jan. 5, when the Coastal Arts Guild welcomes pyrographer Cindy Adams as its guest speaker. As an artist and creator of things, Adams has always been drawn to all things natural, with wood as her driving force. She was first inspired at the age of six by her mother, who showed her a small painting she had created with a brush fashioned from a wooden toothpick. Since then, Adams has explored and created in media including scrimshaw, watercolor, pencil, pen and ink and woodworking on many levels. She loves detail and has a passion for photorealism. She has spent the past eight years focusing on pyrography, the art of creating images by burning a wooden surface with various tools. Adams will give her presentation at the guild’s Jan. 5 lunch meeting, which will run from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on the second floor

Smee kids on stage The characters of Neverland will come to life in Lincoln City this Saturday, Dec. 31, as the Missoula Children’s Theatre presents “Peter & Wendyâ€? at Taft High 7-12. When Captain Hook sends his right-hand man Smee on a quest to capture Peter Pan, it’s seemingly business as usual ‌ at ďŹ rst. Little does Hook realize what fantastic adventures await him and his pirate posse in their search for the elusive Peter. The show will be performed twice, at noon and 3:30 pm on Saturday, Dec. 31, in the Commons at Taft High 7-12. Admission is $5 for adults, $2 for students. Seating is ďŹ rstcome-ďŹ rst-served, with doors open 30 minutes before the showtime. The project is sponsored by the Music is Instrumental Project of the Siletz Bay Music Festival and the Oregon Community Foundation. Other support has come from the Taft HELP Program and the Lincoln City Cultural Center.
Theatre West rays their game, with “The Sunshine Boysâ€? Bickering thespians are normally a sure-ďŹ re sign of a show gone wrong. But not at Lincoln City’s Theatre West, which continues its “Season of Simonâ€? with a production of Neil Simon’s “The Sunshine Boys.â€? Al and Willie, aka: “Lewis and Clarkâ€? were top-billed vaudevillians for more than 40 years. Now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedyâ€? retrospective, the two stage a grudging reunion, prompting a ood of memories, miseries and laughs. Directed by Stina SeegerGibson, the comedy stars Rich Emery as Willie Clark, Steve GriďŹƒths as Al Lewis, Andrew Schmitz as Ben Silverman, John Jeans as Eddie, Max Johnson as the patient and Terri King and Debbie Gerber as the nurses. The show will be presented at 7:30 pm every Thursday,

Some gems from the Emerald City An all-ages New Year’s Eve party at Newport’s Café Mundo will feature a lineup of Seattle musicians assembled by Evan Peterson, longtime drummer for Rick Bartow and the Backseat Drivers. The free shindig will include performances from Chris Poage with Mts. & Tunnels; Norman Baker and the Backroads Duo; and The Conrad Brudi Band. As a long time resident of Newport, Peterson was soaked in the stories, friendship, art of the coastal community. Nearly three years ago, he moved to Seattle to be closer to family and to take his art to a major city. But Peterson still considers the Oregon Coast to be home and is excited to share his new stories, friendships and art at this festive get-together. Hailing from the Puget Sound, Mts. & Tunnels blend lyrics of love and yearning with vocal harmonies and vintage baritone sax. Singersongwriter Chris Poage has synthesized his varied influences, from ’40s jazz to Lou Reed, into an eclectic mix of wistful love songs and foot-stomping R&B. With two albums, three singles and a feature on network TV, Poage and his band have honed their live show into an experience not to be missed. They have played Northwest festivals like Once, Summer Meltdown, NW Folklife, Downtown Sounds and Fisherman’s Village Music Fest. Norman Baker and the Backroads Duo pay homage to the importance of traveling, creating and sharing by introducing new and old songs to as many communities

as possible. Their new album uses pedal steel, mandolin, banjo, upright bass, clarinet and an onslaught of acoustic and electric guitars to tell stories of loss, loss-prevention, camping, driving without cell phones, childlike innocence, hometowns and walking ’til your shoes wear through. Rounding out the lineup is the The Conrad Brudi Band, a group that came to be after Peterson struck up a conversation with Conrad Brudi, who was busking for rent money on a rainy Seattle evening. They soon formed a group around Brudi’s voice. The other members of the
band are Brudi’s two other brothers, Johannes and George, as well as childhood friends Sam Ferguson and Tristan Kline. Brudi can remember songs and melodies he has heard only once, even if it was from his early childhood. Raised by his grandparents in a small German village, Brudi learned his repertoire from studying a collection of American folk and blues songs his grandfather had accumulated over the years. The music will begin at 8 pm and run ‘til late at Café Mundo, 209 NW Coast Street, Newport.

See Big Night Out on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 30 and 31
UNDER THE MISTLE-TWO
New Year’s Eve can come with a lot of pressure — what to wear, where to go, whether to opt for a traditional cocktail or to take a chance with those innocent-looking Jello shots. All the more reason to head to Lincoln City where Chinook Winds Casino Resort is offering two chances to ring in the New Year — just in case anyone needs a do-over. The twin celebrations will take place on Friday, Dec. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 31, with a shared “Under the Sea” theme providing plenty of options for dressing up. Guests are also welcome to come as they are and simply enjoy evenings packed with excitement, live music and the chance to win cash prizes. On Friday, Dec. 30, the resort will offer three free parties, each aimed at guests 21 and over. Popular party band Big Night Out will play the Chinook Winds Convention Center starting at 9 pm, while the Rogue River Lounge will host

Finally, Chinook’s Seafood Grill will start rocking at 10 pm with local entertainer Bret Lucich — a one man band whose impression of Willie Nelson has to be seen to be believed. Friday is also the first of three nights of drawings for the $100,000 Under the Sea promotion. Eight
winners will be drawn at 9 pm each night from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 1. Each night, one lucky winner will win $25,000 and seven others will walk away with cash. multiple options for over 21s. Big Night Out will be back on stage from 9 pm to 1:30 am at the convention center, playing a variety of dance music in a free concert. Meanwhile, at the Chinook Winds Showroom, DJ Metal will spin songs from 10 pm until 2 am. Guests can party for free with Bret Lucich at Chinook’s Seafood Grill starting at 10 pm. And over at Chinook Winds Golf Resort, blues star Ty Curtis will play a free gig at Aces Sports Bar & Grill, also starting at 10 pm. All parties include party hats and favors. For those who hope to start the New Year off with a big win, there’s New Year’s Eve Bingo, with more than $50,000 in payouts and $15,000 in cash drawings. Bingo sessions begin at 1 pm so get there early for your favorite seat. At 1:30 and 2 pm, 13 winners will receive $500. At 5 pm, one lucky winner will be drawn for $2,017 in cash or free slot play.
The buy-in is $100 until 10 pm on December 30. Door buy-ins on New Year’s Eve are $125.
