1 can (15 oz.) garbanzo beans 1 can (15 oz.) pinto beans 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme 2 bay leaves 1/2 cup ditalini pasta 1 cup (4 oz.) fresh green beans, 1 cup (1 oz.) kale, stems discarded Grated Il Villaggio Parmigiano Reggiano 1-1/4 oz. piece of Il Villaggio Parmigiano Reggiano rind
1. In a large pot, heat the oil until hot. Add pancetta. Cook over medium heat for 3 minutes or until darkened and edges are curled. Add onion, leek, carrot, celery and garlic. Cook and stir until vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes. 2. Add broth, tomatoes with puree, garbanzo and pinto beans, cheese rind, thyme and bay leaves. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. 3. Add pasta. Return to a boil and cook 6 minutes. Add green beans and kale. Simmer 1 minute. Discard cheese rind and bay leaves. Serve with grated cheese on top.

Bling Crosby time I
t was our first apartment together. Our first Christmas, and I decided our first Christmas tree would be themed in blue, white and silver, the most impressive color scheme — in my 21-yearold worldly view. We bought blue and white lights and silver tinsel and then it was up to me to find the star for the top. I found a gold one with blue lights and a silver star with red lights and, of course, neither would do. “Could you swap these red lights with the blue?” I asked a store clerk. He looked at me, scratched his head, then frowned a bit as he eyed the packages stacked one upon the other, shelf upon shelf. All those tree toppers and I could not find one that suited me as it was? But I had already looked in every other store, this star was the only one even close. “Please,” I said. ------------•-----------I’ve always loved decorating for Christmas. And when we got our first real house (as opposed to the 630-square-foot cabin in the woods) in a suburb north of Denver, we did not hold back. Those were the days of icicles. And I was determined every eave of my house was going to be dripping with those tiny white lights. When the department store in my parents’ home town advertised for early orders, my mom made sure to put in an order for me. Only trouble was, the lights were so popular, there were only two per household. And that was nowhere near the number I needed. But it was a start. We’re were home visiting when the clerk called to say our order was in. We wheeled our cart up to the counter and the clerk handed over more than a dozen boxes of icicles. “Wait,” I whispered, nudging my mom. “I thought there were only two per household?” “It’s OK,” Mom said. “They know me.” And so it was that year and several following, our house had more icicles than the frozen trees around it. When we left Colorado bound for the Oregon Coast, we brought our icicles along, but now for the first time I joined the masses in rising in the wee wee dark hours to take advantage of limited early AM Black Friday deals. Those days, the hot item (at least in this household) were the BOGO rooftop decorations. Soon, our roof was fitted out with Santa and his sleigh and the team of reindeer, and on the porch sat a snowman. It had been an unusually mild winter and we had yet to

experience the wrath of Mother Nature. But she made her appearance soon enough. The rain caused the fuses to blow, and the wind blew everything everywhere, and it seemed like just about every night, the hubs was climbing up on the roof, replacing fuses, anchoring down Santa’s sleigh, rolling Frosty back in place. I guess he didn’t mind too much because a couple of years later he crafted a metal star for the rooftop — a roof roughly three stories high at the tallest — and not just a star, but a star with rays that extended all the way down into the yard. I suggested we might want to contact the FAA. And I was only half kidding. Over time, Santa and his reindeers rusted and rotted, and I turned more and more to decorations for inside the house. They save a lot of time and effort, but generally cost a fortune in batteries. This year, at least half of our decorations are on remote and as I walk around the house clicking at trees and angels and whatnot in the windows, I feel like a bit of a cheater. It’s almost too easy. Almost. And
yes, I do get a bit nostalgic for the days when we schemed for more icicles and persistently pursued the perfect Christmas tree color scheme. ------------•-----------On that day, all those years ago in the Anchorage Pay n’ Save, the clerk heard my plea, looked wearily at the shelves of festive stars and lowered himself to the floor on his knees. As he opened the boxes, removing one strand of lights and replacing them with the other, a song came over the store speakers. “I’ll be home for Christmas,” Bing Crosby sang. And I, perpetually homesick sappy I, promptly burst into tears. Looking utterly befuddled, the poor man handed me my custom-created star. I swiped away some tears, paid for my decoration and went home to put my blue and silver star atop our first Christmas tree. LAST MAN STANDING By Barbara B. Covell For the TODAY
H
e is a gifted playwright, writer, director, comedian and actor. Known for his delicious one-man shows, albeit a tad decadent and adult-themed; yet a punch to the funny bone for his diverse and appreciative audiences. Del Shores is returning to the Yachats Commons stage on Saturday, Dec. 9, premiering his new one-man show, “Six Characters in Search of a Play”. “I love the Yachats venue,” Shores said. “It reminds me of the high school gymnasiums where I started. There’s something about working a stage and seeing basketball hoops.” Best known for crafting the hilarious 1996 stage show “Sordid Lives,” Shores achieved recognition as a playwright, director and producer with a 13-month Los Angeles run. Shortly thereafter, Shores produced the motion picture version of “Sordid Lives,” starring Beau Bridges, Bonnie Bedelia, Delta Burke, Olivia Newton-John, Leslie Jordan and Beth Grant, along with most of the cast from the play. “Sordid Lives: The Series” was a television prequel to the film which received international acclaim. Shores created, wrote, directed and executive produced all 12 episodes. In 2000, Shores launched “Southern Baptist Sissies” for a 10-month run in Los Angeles. It completely sold out and was revived in 2002 for another six months. “The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife” premiered in 2003 and garnered multiple Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle awards. The film version
of this play featured the entire original stage cast with Shores writing, directing and producing. Entitled “Blues For Willadean,” it was released in 2012. One year later, Shores released the film version of “Southern Baptist Sissies” and won 10 major awards on the film festival circuit. In March 2017, Shores released “A Very Sordid Wedding” for its world premiere in Palm Springs. It was in limited theaters, enjoyed sellout shows and rave reviews, now available on DVD. This is the final chapter of the “Sordid Lives” franchise, advancing the characters 17 years to glimpse marriage equality in Winters, Texas. There are many familiar franchise veterans featured, including Bonnie Bedelia, Leslie Jordan, Caroline Rhea,
Dale Dickey and Ann Walker. Audiences loved the cameos by Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Mapa, and Carole Cook. For those who possess a sharp eye, there are several Yachatians appearing in the final wedding scene.
Del Shores has successfully reinvented his hallmark standup career and toured nationally with four different shows. Audiences love his brash humor, political rants and stories about abruptly becoming single in his 50s.

Now in preparation for his 2018 tour, he is premiering his latest endeavor, “Six Characters in Search of a Play” on the Yachats Commons stage. It is inspired by the classic Pirandello play “Six Characters in Search of an Author” and directed by Emerson Collins. Shores is a master of character development and enjoys unencumbered standup comedy. He works best with a simple set, a few chairs, perhaps a table and no costumes. It is the content and delivery which make the difference, and in “Six Characters in Search of a Play,” Shores is digging deep. “This is more theatrical than standup. It is like a one man play,” Shores said, adding: “It has been a lot of work.”

Describing himself as an observer of life, Shores said characters are the driving force of his work. “Whether writing, acting, directing or producing, it is how the story is told,” he said. “You have to scratch hard to know who your characters are, who they were, and what they want.” In creating “Six Characters in Search of a Play,” Shores drew from 20 different people he has known to create the five women and one man he portrays on stage. “I had a lot of inspiration,” he said, “so I am giving them a place to call home.” Shores will be portraying Yvonne, the vegetarian-hating waitress; Sarah, an elderly actress determined to smoke and drink herself to death if Trump becomes president; Lorraine, the brilliant, proud, creative drama teacher who lost her mind; Jimmy Ray, the evolving Georgia redneck; Aunt Bobbie Sue, the blue collar, good-hearted Republican racist; and Marsha, a monkey-hating lesbian with CPOD. “The challenge is differentiating each character with my body and voice,” Shores said. “Imaginative audiences will enjoy.” Saturday’s show, sponsored by One of Us Productions and Polly Plumb, starts at 7 pm at the Yachats Commons, 441 Hwy. 101 N. Light and dark will collide this Friday, Dec. 8, as the Northwest Mosaic Art Alliance unveils its new show, “Chiaroscuro,” at Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery. The exhibit will open with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm offering wine, light refreshments and the chance to chat with many of the artists. “Chiaroscuro” shows how contemporary artists are reinvigorating the ancient art of mosaic — combining traditional and non-traditional materials to create astonishing new work. The exhibit explores the nature of light and dark, how shadows are cast by the materials in the works, and how mosaic materials either reflect or absorb light. Both abstract and representational pieces will be on show. The Northwest Mosaic Art Alliance is a group of artist “My Ball” by Richard Davis colleagues and friends living in Oregon and Washington who work in the broad medium of mosaic. They met through membership in the Society of American Mosaic Artists. Over the years, they have grown and deepened their artistic practices from self-taught beginners exploring a new medium to successful professionals, exhibiting, teaching and presenting worldwide. The mission of the group is to help elevate the status of the mosaic medium by exhibiting widely and exposing more people to their art. Collectively, this group is well known among mosaic artists worldwide. They have exhibited in prestigious venues in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia and have won awards in juried exhibitions. Alliance members include Lynn Adamo of Bend; Mark Brody and Scott Fitzwater of Portland; Joanne Daschel of Lincoln City; Karen Rycheck of Talent, Oregon; Richard “Warp” by Lynn Adamo Davis of Clinton, Washington; Jennifer Kuhns of Elma, Washington; and Jo Braunand and Kelley Knickerbocker of Seattle. “Chiaroscuro” will run through Monday, Jan. 9, available to view from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Tuesdays at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Hwy. 101. isit the Oregon Coast any time of the year and memories imprint on your heart. And perhaps the most vivid memories of all are to be made at the Annual Victorian Christmas Open House at Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast near Yachats. Every year, the B&B opens its doors to welcome locals, visitors and guests for a presentation of holiday lights, festivities and cheer. This weekend and next, staff and volunteers will transform the Keeper’s House into Santa’s workshop, complete with bright, twinkling lights, holiday decorations and goodies. “Each night is sponsored by a local community organization or business,” said Misty Anderson, inn manager and events coordinator for the B&B. “They are in charge of serving, cleaning up and managing the raffles. Everyone gets into the fun of this event, which is free and open to the entire family.” Anderson said the event draws between 150 and 300 visitors each night, depending on the weather. Free shuttle service is provided from the State Scenic Viewpoint public parking area below, near the beachfront. The entire first floor of the spacious B&B is decorated with fresh garlands, wreaths, handmade bows and lights of

every color. Two trees adorned with holiday decorations are on separate ends of the house, one has a train set to appeal to kids. There is a 22-year-old Christmas teddy bear collection on display, a nativity scene in the parlor, and Santa makes a nightly appearance to give candy to appreciative children. “We have three musicians playing every night,” Anderson said. “Some are well known performers, we also showcase youth musicians and children’s groups. The instruments range from piano, guitar, string ensembles and harp.” The culinary program at Siuslaw High School in Florence make all the cookies, with coffee, tea, hot chocolate and cider served. Coffee is donated by the Green Salmon in Yachats.
An assortment of raffle items are donated by local businesses. The monies raised go toward restoration of the B&B and the interpretive program. Both the Keeper’s House and lighthouse offer guided tours throughout the year from knowledgeable docents. Anderson said the Heceta Lighthouse B&B has invested in new LED lights outside the house. “We won the Florence Christmas light competition last year,” she said. “We work together with the Oregon State Parks to include rope lights on the pathways to the lighthouse.” The lighthouse and the amply stocked gift shop will be open every night during the celebration weekends. The original lighthouse and Keeper’s

House were built in 1894 and have weathered many transitions over the years. The Oregon State Parks own the resilient lighthouse and the beach below. The ocean beach is a protected marine reserve with abundant wildlife. The US Forest Service owns the Keeper’s House which became the Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast in 1995 with Mike and Carol Korgan as innkeepers. The Korgans worked tirelessly to restore and transition the old house to a Queen Anne-style B&B, featuring six bedrooms. Chorale grants three wishes The Central Coast Chorale will present the first of three Wishes & Candles holiday concerts this Friday, Dec. 8, at the Congregational Church of Lincoln City, featuring the 54-voice choir performing a selection of Christmas music. The concert will be repeated on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the First Presbyterian Church of Newport and on Friday, Dec. 15, at the Yachats Commons. All three concerts begin at 7 pm and have a suggested donation of $10 for admission. The chorale will perform two challenging movements from Francois Poulenc’s “Motets for the Christmas Season.” “Videntes stellam” tells of the approach of the Magi, starting quietly “as from afar” and growing in excitement as they approach
the stable, while “Hodie Christus natus est” proclaims the joy of the day. Written in 1952, these pieces are traditional in theme but listeners will detect modern touches such as slightly
dissonant chords and unexpected transitions. The lineup also features the final movement of American composer Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata,” also written in
the 1950s. The piece uses a technique of layering voices to build to a thrilling crescendo of joyful alleluias. The choir will also sing “O Magnum Mysterium” by northwest composer Morten
Lauridsen. Although this piece was written only 20 years ago, the beauty of the deceptively simple harmonies links it directly to the great classical choral traditions.
One of the most interesting pieces of the concert will be Norwegian composer Oja Gjiello’s resetting of Gustav Holst’s “In the Bleak Midwinter,” performed as a double choir. Gjiello uses pulsing rhythms to play up the irregular meter of Christina Rossetti’s original poem. Women of Note, the women’s octet, will present a trio of pieces — “Star of Wonder,” a three-part a cappella piece written by Terre Roche of the folk trio the Roches; J. Edmund Hughes’ unique arrangement of “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming;” and La Nana, a traditional Spanish lullaby, featuring guitar accompaniment by Derek Johnson. You are the ‘Messiah’ The Monday Musical Club of Tillamook will present Handel’s “Messiah” in a new way on Monday, Dec. 11, with a singalong performance that puts the audience at the heart of the action. “There’s no chorus,” said concert conductor Adam Schwend. “The audience is the chorus.” Schwend is the conductor of the Midway Chorus & Orchestra, which presents “Messiah” in Tillamook and Lincoln City every even-
numbered year. “I’ve had a lot of community members mention how they wish they had the time to sing with us, because they love the work so much,” he said. “This is an opportunity for everyone to come and sing without having to attend any rehearsals or multiple performances. It’s much less formal and the only time commitment is the 90 minutes of the program.” While the audience sings the choruses, soloists will sing the numerous solo movements
found in Part One of the work, giving everyone an opportunity to enjoy listening as well as singing. “If you want to just come and listen, that’s okay too,” Schwend said. The performance will begin at 7 pm at the Tillamook Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2610 1st Street. Admission is free, although donations will be accepted and will go towards the work of the Monday Musical Club of Tillamook. Extra scores will be available to borrow, but due to the limited number anyone who has a copy of “Messiah” is encouraged to bring it along.
A hole lot of Christmas music The Oregon Coast Recorder Society will perform music old and new this Sunday, Dec. 10, in a benefit concert at Lincoln City’s St. Peter the Fisherman Lutheran Church. Entitled “Music for Christmas,” the program includes Medieval carols “Personent hodie,” “Verbum caro factum est” and “Verbum Patris umanatur” in concert versions by Seattle composer Peter

HARPING ON ABOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON Emmy nominee and master harp guitarist John Doan will take to the stage in Newport this weekend to put a range of vintage instruments through their paces in “Christmas Unplugged.” Hosted by the Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean, this festive concert is a live version of Doan’s Emmy-nominated Public Broadcasting television special, which re-enacts what it might have been like to celebrate Christmas a century ago. “The show explores how Victorians invented many Christmas traditions we remember and quite a few we have forgotten,” Doan said. “The 20-string harp guitar, classical banjo and ukelin are just a few of the
original instruments that will be featured. The aim is to recapture the feeling of a time before radio and TV when our ancestors provided most of their own musical entertainment at home, especially during the holidays.” Doan plays more than a dozen turn-of-the-century instruments once popular in American parlors, on vaudeville stages and in mandolin orchestras. He explains their history in an entertaining and often zany fashion, shows slides of old catalogues and archival photographs, and leads the audience in singing or whistling some much-beloved carols. Doan will include several arrangements from his album “Wrapped in White: Visions of Christmas Past.”
The Salon Series from the Oregon Coast Chamber Music Society will continue this Saturday, Dec. 9, with a performance from pianist Cary Lewis and violinist Sarah Kwak. The pair will perform an intimate concert in the oceanfront home of Dick and Laurel Young in Depoe Bay. Lewis has been in constant demand for many years as a collaborative pianist for soloists and chamber music groups. He performs in festivals and concerts worldwide and has recorded on at least 11 top labels. Jazz good as it gets Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts will be filled with swinging jazz this Saturday, Dec. 9, as Jazzattitude step on stage for an evening of lounge, swing, samba and holiday tunes. The local quartet consists of Doug Proctor on keyboards, Robert Brook on guitar, Leo Lawyer on percussion and vocalist Sydney Elliott. Brook, formerly of Shy Jazz, founded the group with Proctor in 2012, with Elliott joining in 2016 and Lawyer rounding out the foursome this year.
