egular readers of the TODAY will know that assistant editor Quinn is a big reader. Just check out this shot of him boning up on disaster preparedness. But as we made our way through the lobby of Lincoln City’s Driftwood Public Library the other day, we noticed that there is something distinctly ďŹ shy going on. Greeting guests as they exit the elevators is a large framed poster, most of which is obscured

by little paper panels emblazoned with question marks. “How intriguingâ€? we both thought as we studied this strange new addition to the dĂŠcor. Only one spot of the poster was uncovered, revealing a bespectacled eye peering out from beneath the mysterious layer of gray. Quinn’s sharp eyes and low vantage point allowed him to see that the very bottom of the poster was also visible, revealing a hand decked out in a jewel-encrusted ring alongside a slogan: “Keep

There was something familiar about the regal visage starting to take shape. Could that be Circulation Supervisor Ken “Hobbes Hobson under there? What’s he doing buried beneath a pile of question marks and wearing a ruby ring? Quinn and I will stay on the case. Watch this space for more.

Ensemble founder Nancy Mittleman said the performances, set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 10, 11 and 12, are a Valentine’s gift to the community, allowing students to show appreciation for the support and skills they have acquired. Students from the ensemble have gone on to study and perform in such places as

In addition to Mittleman’s routines, the show will feature original choreography by ensemble members Erika Sugrue, Leela Kreis-Stokes, Anabel Tucker, Avery Osborn and Coral Lehrman as well as alumni Cecily Wechter and Michaela Shoberg. The ensemble is currently seeking donations for the silent auction portion of the celebration. All donations are tax deductible. Proceeds from the auction will help the

HATCHING NEW IDEAS

GED AYDELOTT TAKES FLIGHT AT THE CAFÉ ON HAWK CREEK Story & photos by Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY

Delicious meals and a cozy atmosphere have long been the hallmarks of Neskowin’s Café on Hawk Creek. Owners Genie and Frank Ullrich are dedicated to maintaining both as the café undergoes a menu revamp from new chef Ged Aydelott along with a pending remodel. “We want to keep the same flavor, the same feel,” Genie Ullrich said, adding: “We need that warm feeling and yet we want to capitalize on the outdoors as well.” The planned remodel will allow for more indoor seating as well as expanding the café’s deck and seeing the installation of a 20foot concertina window overlooking Hawk Creek. “It will be like you are outside on those nice days,” Ullrich said. A three-sided fireplace will keep the café snug in the evenings, with the firelight playing off lustrous wooden tables, lovingly hand-crafted by Frank. Those artisan tables will serve as the perfect backdrop for the culinary creations of chef Ged Aydelott, who recently joined the café after 11 years at the bustling Pelican Pub & Brewery in nearby Pacific City.

“I wanted a life change,” Aydelott said. “I’ve always kind of admired this place from afar — a cool café in a cool little spot. It’s a new adventure.” Ullrich said that in addition to his kitchen management skills, Aydelott brings a wealth of experience in menu creation. “Our guests that come in notice” she said, “and they rave about his dishes.” Aydelott has already made his mark on the café’s menu, bringing on dishes such as alder-planked king salmon with a blackberry wine reduction; and shrimp and polenta, sautéed with tomato and bacon. During his years with the Pelican, Aydelott racked up unmatched success at the Lincoln City Culinary Center cook-offs, at one point racking up a clean sweep of all four contests — fish taco, jambalaya, wild mushroom and, of course, chowder. And Aydelott has brought his chowder philosophy to the Café on Hawk Creek, revamping the house recipe with a little award-winning flair. “For me, a good chowder is something that’s simple,” he said. “You want to highlight the clams and that sweet clam flavor. It has to be nice and creamy and kind of comfort food.”

Ged Aydelott

The cafe’s pending remodel aims to capilatize on its scenic surroundings

Seasonal ingredients are key to Aydelott’s menu, which currently showcases local Dungeness crab served

whole or by the half. For winter vegetables, Aydelott favors Brussels sprouts and butternut squash, roasted

to perfection in the café’s wood-fired pizza oven. “Anything you cook in that just picks up this wonderful wood flavor,” he said. When not roasting veggies, the oven still turns out pizzas with a slightlythicker-than-normal crust, which local tradition dictates is then eaten with honey for dessert. Meanwhile the café’s extensive wine list features labels from the Pacific Northwest, California, New Zealand and Australia, with something to suit every pocket book, from everyday to fine wines for special occasions. Beer fans can choose from a large selection of craft beers. And if choosing just one proves impossible, the café offers a flight of four 4-ounce glasses for $10. The newest addition to the bar, though, is a full liquor license, allowing guests to enjoy cocktails ranging from the traditional martini or mimosa to the formidable Basil Hayden’s Last Stand, crafted with bourbon, Grand Marnier and iced tea and

finished with lemon peel. Being a place for people to gather from breakfast right through to a late-night cocktail is important to Ullrich, who said the café has received overwhelming support from the Neskowin community. “We have people that have been coming here for generations to family beach homes,” she said. “Now the grandchildren and great grandchildren are coming in to the café and remembering it from their childhoods.” “We just want to give our guests a good dining experience when they come in — atmosphere, service and quality of food,” she added. “If we can do that then people will leave happy. That’s our intent.” The Café on Hawk Creek is open from 9 am to 9 pm daily; serving breakfast from 9 am, lunch from 11:30 am and dinner from 4 pm. To-go orders are available all day. Call ahead to place your order. Gift cards are available. For more information, call 503392-4400.

Story & photos by Gretchen Ammerman For the TODAY

Self-taught geology expert Laura Joki is, wait for it…a rock star. I discovered this when walking with her on the beach for the first time and running into one of her fans. “I recognize that voice,” said a woman Joki swears was not a friend she planted there. “Are you Laura?” After Joki confirmed her identity, Heather Harris excitedly explained that she had driven to Lin-coln City from Dallas, Oregon, specifically in hopes of running into her at the beach. “I watch her videos on YouTube all the time,” Harris said. “She totally got me hooked on rocks and fossils.” Now, thanks to the Lincoln City Visitor & Convention Bureau, Joki’s fans can find her at (mostly) guaranteed times during a series of beachcombing clinics, which run through April 20. On a recent scheduled walk, the weather was right on the edge of stormy, so Joki chose to take the roughly 15 hardy folk who Laura Joki showed down to the beach for a quick tour, followed by a longer talk and Q&A at her nearby rock, gem and jewelry shop, Rock curiosity was encouraged. Compose yourself, it’s “Amadeus” London’s National Theater will come to the Oregon Coast this Friday, Feb. 3, as the Newport Performing Arts Center screens a performance of “Amadeus” in high definition. Peter Shaffer’s iconic play follows rowdy young prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as he arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world, determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music and ultimately, with God. Lucian Msamati plays Salieri, with live orchestral accompaniment by the

Southbank Sinfonia. After winning multiple Olivier and Tony Awards when it premiered at the National Theatre in 1979, “Amadeus” was adapted into an Academy Awardwinning film. National Theatre Live is an initiative by the UK’s National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema screens around the world. Friday’s screening in Newport is hosted by Paula Eddy and Carlo Navarra, in memory of Samuel L. Eddy. The screening will begin at 7 pm at 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and $11 for students, are available at the box office, online at www. coastarts.org or by calling 541-265-ARTS (2787).

Off grid and on stage Living on a farm in the San Juan Islands with donkeys out the front door and whales out the back, Dave McGraw and Mandy Fer bring a distinctive, off-grid sensibility to their singing and songwriting. And the duo will bring their unique sound to the Oregon Coast this Saturday, Feb. 4, with a performance at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Known as a standout electric guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Fer is unafraid to dominate the stage for an extended guitar solo, defying long-held gender barriers for female guitarists. Meanwhile, McGraw’s emotional songwriting riffs on natural elements of the world around him. Together, their exceptional vocal harmonies coupled with Fer’s pioneering electric guitar work have become a vehicle to carry them around the world. The pair have honed their skills touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe, sharing stages with fellow troubadours including Iron & Wine, Glen Hansard, Gregory Alan Isakov, Kelly Joe

Wood carver tops bill as Toledo artists open their doors Art lovers will want to carve out a little time this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5, as First Weekend returns to Toledo, with Portland wood carver Rusty Brown as the featured artist. Brown, cousin to Toledo oil painter Michael Gibbons, first discovered carving by taking a class at the age of 18, but it would be 23 years before he returned to the art form that now dominates his life.. “I kept one piece to reflect upon,” he said, “as I knew someday I would follow that passion.” Inspired by his Irish, Scottish and English family ancestry, Brown rekindled his love of wood carving by delving into the world of Celtic art. His work features not only the traditional knot work patterns, but also original patterns of his own design. Frequently adorned with semi-precious stones, the wooden sculptures dazzle the

eye with detail and brilliance. Brown’s works will be on display at the Yaquina River Museum of Art, 151 NE Alder Street, throughout February. On Sunday, Feb. 5, he will give a presentation on his technique starting at 4 pm. Complimentary refreshments will be provided. Visitors to the museum can also view a segment of 12 paintings from “Yaquina,” a traveling exhibition by Michael Gibbons. Across the street at his signature gallery, Gibbons will be featuring “View in the Stanford Gardens,” a painting he completed in Mendocino, California, while serving as mentor to 80 artists at the local art center. Gallery Michael Gibbons will be open from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday, with complimentary Oregon wine and cheese on offer. Just around the corner, fellow oil painter Ivan Kelly

will be showcasing several of his big game works, including the new “Teton Bison,” painted on location in the rocky Mountains. Also included will be “Jackson Hole Courtship,” an oil painting depicting moose, as well as several coastal landscape oils. Ivan Kelly Studio-Gallery is located at 207 East Graham Street, and will be open from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. On Main Street, Gallery Briseno will be featuring Cindy McGonagle’s miniature oils, watercolors and giclée prints as well as a new collection of whimsical fairy houses by John Crawford. The gallery will also showcase Scott Blackman’s photography and felted fiber arts by Sandy Blackman. Located near the top of Main Street, Gallery Briseno will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Pushing the boundaries

Botany free time this Friday?

The works of Newport painter Patti Johnson will fill the Upstairs Gallery of the Newport Visual Arts Center when her “Flowers and Faces” exhibit opens this Friday, Feb. 3. Guests are invited to view the collection of oil and acrylic paintings at a public reception running from 5 to 7 pm and featuring a talk from Johnson at 6:30 pm. Johnson was raised on the East Coast and moved to the Newport area in 1976. She has been painting and teaching at the Newport Visual Arts Center, through the Yaquina Art Association for more than 40 years and currently facilitates the association’s weekly class in oil and acrylics painting.

Johnson credits her parents for teaching her the art of painting and has taken various workshops and college courses along the way to hone her craft. Her paintings focus on flowers and portraits, and, as she says, “anything beautiful.” “We are excited to recognize Patti Johnson and her talent in oils and acrylics with her first solo exhibit at the Newport Visual Arts Center,” said center director Tom Webb. “Patti’s control of paint and color is impressive.” The exhibit, hosted by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, will be on display until Feb. 25, available to view from noon to 4 pm Tuesday through Saturday at 777 NW Beach Drive.

The unique sculptural vision of Dawn Stetzel will be on display this month as her new exhibit, “Ready or Not,” opens at the Newport Visual Arts Center. Drawing its inspiration from the Oregon Coast, “Ready or Not” is a collection of large-scale sculptural works made to navigate specific environments and explore notions of home and perceptions of safety. The exhibit will open with a public reception this Friday, Feb. 3, from 5 to 7 pm in the center’s Runyan Gallery, with a talk from the artist at 6 pm. “The structure that I think about is not strong,” Stetzel said. “It is teetering, fragile and just barely holds things together. Metaphorically, this structure is the scaffolding that is the connection between humans. It is also the network that connects humans to their natural world.” Stetzel’s sculptural works include “Houseboat,” “Ski Cart” and “Tsunami Evacuation Cart”— each constructed from found materials to communicate a serious message with a sense of humor. “Within ‘Houseboat,’ I reflect on the wide range of public conception regarding safety,” Stetzel said. “I also poke fun at the possible wariness of lifestyles deemed as seemingly not appropriate ways of living in a place.” Work from “Ready or Not” was included in “Portland 2016: A Biennial Collection of Contemporary Art” at the Disjecta Gallery in Portland last summer, and other pieces were included in Stetzel’s solo exhibit, “I Could Live There,” at The Art Center in Corvallis during fall 2016. Stetzel received her MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and her BA from the University of Iowa. She has had solo exhibitions at The Arts Center, Artspace in Raleigh, North Carolina and The Artscenter in Carrborro, North Carolina. Her work has been commissioned by the City of Lincoln City, the Raleigh Arts Center in North Carolina and North Carolina Zoological Park. The exhibit, hosted by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, will be on display through Feb. 26, available to view from 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday at 777 NW Beach Drive.
