LINCOLN CITY — Confused by the packs of salivating dogs and conflicted vegetarians flocking toward the north end of town? Don’t be. They’re making their way to Chinook Winds Casino Resort, where Beach, Bacon & Brews returns for a third year of delightfully crispy decadence this Saturday.
See page 9
2
PACIFIC CITY — Disney’s forgetful blue fish might have made the name famous across the world, but on the Oregon Coast, Dory means just one thing: party time in Pacific City. Named for the distinctive, flat-bottomed fishing fleet, Dory Days combines a parade, fish fry and fishing contest to really push the boat out.

3
NEHALEM — The Oregon Coast has its fair share of talented actors, but only one who has honed his craft working alongside giants like Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas and Gene Hackman. Longtime Hollywood character actor George Dzundza puts his decades of experience to work directing “Doubt, A Parable.”
4
NEWPORT — At upwards of six feet long, the traditional Australian didgeridoo is a tough instrument to travel with. All the more reason to thank Pamela Mortenson for making the trip to lend her distinctive sound to the Nye Beach Summer Celebration this Saturday.

SEAL ROCK — When organizers of the INHOUSE Jazz series say they have talent in the house, they really mean in the house; quite possibly perching their instruments between the kitchen counter and the mantelpiece. Bringing top musicians to play house concerts at the coast, the series offers highquality jazz in an intimate setting.

A stand-up jazz duo The INHOUSE Jazz series of house concerts will continue this Sunday, July 16, with a performance from pianist Steve Christofferson and vocalist Heather Keizur. Hosted by vocalist Annie Averre, the concert will showcase a mix of fresh, original works, familiar jazz and Latin classics as well as favorite selections from the artists’ recordings. Keizur and Christofferson stand out in a refreshing way, delivering a combination of classic pop, standards and French songs with a powerful and expressive stage presence. “Heather sings like there’s no tomorrow” says Christofferson. “We’re compelled to reach you.” Malcolm Holt of the Georgia Straight Jazz Society said many jazz fans view the pair’s 2015 performance together as the highlight of the season. “Heather wowed the audience with a whole new level of romantic ballads, classic standards and authentic French chansons,” he said. “She combined these with her expressive stage presentation and interplay with Steve Christofferson.” Meanwhile, fellow Portland Jazz pianist Dave Frishberg has this praise for his keytickling colleague. “Steve Christofferson gets a great sound and plays with real authority and impeccable taste,” Frishberg said. “He’s one of my favorite piano players.” Sunday’s concert will run from 2:30 to 5:30 pm in a private home near Seal Rock. Admission is by suggested donation of $15 to $30, with profits donated in support of local music education. For reservations and directions call 360-606-7136 or email aaverre@hotmail. com.
in concert Treble brewing, in Newport Cellist Jayson Bishop will perform a concert in Newport this Saturday, July 15, featuring solo cello works by Telemann, Hindemith, Piatti and Crumb. Bishop has been performing for audiences throughout the United States for nearly 40 years. A student of Bernard Greenhouse of the acclaimed Beaux Arts Trio, he currently resides in Amarillo, Texas, where he is a member of the Amarillo Symphony. He is pursuing a Master’s of Music at West Texas A&M, where he studies with cellist Emmanuel Lopez of the Harrington String Quartet. Bishop has performed and recorded all of the Six Suites for Solo Cello by J.S. Bach, including performances in Newport and Yachats in the past two summers. Saturday’s concert will begin at 3 pm at St. Stephen Episcopal Church, 414 SW 9th Street. Admission is by suggested donation of $10.
Didge you know about this? Didgeridoo master Pamela Mortensen will be the guest artist at the Nye Beach Summer Celebration this Saturday, July 15, adding her distinctive sound to the flutes and drums of the Thunder & Lightness Ensemble. “Pamela performed with Thunder & Lightness a couple of years ago and the combination of the flutes and didgeridoo with the drums is a feast for the ears,” said event organizer Chandler Davis. “We’ll have Terry Filer back with us on the Native American flutes, Skip Floraday and Rodney Turner will be joining me on the drums, and I’m expecting several other special guests.” Officially the Nye Beach “Second Saturday” Summer Celebration, the event shifts to the third Saturday in July due to the exodus of Newport musicians to the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta. The free, family friendly community-wide celebration takes place rain or shine, from noon to 3 pm on the outdoor stage at Café Mundo, 209 NW Coast Street. There is outdoor seating (some covered)

Dzundza brings clout to ‘Doubt’ Having appeared in films including “The Deer Hunter,” “Basic Instinct” and “Crimson Tide,” George Dzundza has enjoyed success on the global stage. But this Friday, July 14, Dzundza will trade the bright lights of Hollywood for the more intimate setting of Nehalem’s performing arts center as Riding Tide Productions presents “Doubt, A Parable.” John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play delves into the murky shadows of moral uncertainty, where the characters are always balancing their beliefs on the thin line between truth and consequences. Dzundza has been involved in theater since the 1960s when he was a student at St. John’s University in Queens. There, he majored in Speech and Theater, and studied with Dr. Jerome Rockwood, author of “The Craftsmen

original Group Theatre. Their teaching formed the base of a professional acting career that spanned close to 40 years. In addition to his extensive film and television credits, Dzundza has appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway,
Off-Off-Broadway, regional theatre, dinner theatre and national tours. Having moved to the Oregon Coast 10 years ago, Dzundza is lending his formidable experience to Rising Tide Productions,
directing its latest offering, “Doubt, A Parable.” Set in 1964, the play explores ideas of morality and certainty as Catholic high school principal Sister Aloysius accuses the young Father Flynn of improper relations with one of the male students. The play stars Joseph Oyala as Father Flynn, Margaret Page as Sister Aloysious, Brenna Sage as Sister James and Sue Meyers Neuer as Mrs. Muller. An exquisite, potent drama, “Doubt: A Parable” leaves the audience to grapple with the
Oh, what a night Shakespeare’s classic comedy of mistaken identity will grace the big screen in Newport this Friday, July 14, as National Theatre Live presents “Twelfth Night” with a twist. Simon Godwin’s joyous new production stars Tamsin Greig as Malvolia, gender-flipping the traditionally male role to great effect. The play opens with a ship wrecked on the rocks. Viola is washed ashore but her twin brother, Sebastian, is lost. Determined to survive on her own, she steps out to
explore a new land. So begins a whirlwind of mistaken identity and unrequited love. The nearby households of Olivia and Orsino are overrun with passion. Where music is the food of love, and nobody is quite what they seem, anything proves possible. The ensemble cast also features Daniel Rigby, Tamara Lawrence, Doon Mackichan and Daniel Ezra. National Theatre Live is an initiative by the UK’s National Theatre to broadcast live performances onto cinema
screens around the world. Since its first season, which began in June 2009, millions have now experienced the National’s work on movie screens worldwide. Friday’s screening, hosted by Lynne Walser-Clark, will run from 7 to 10 pm at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and $11 for students, are available at the box office, by calling 541265-ARTS or online at www. coastarts.org.

hat are friends for? They’re for picking you up when you’re down; giving you shelter when you have no place else to go; and they’re all for letting you know when you’re driving them crazy. In Theatre West’s female version of the wellknown Neil Simon play “The Odd Couple,” Oscar Madison becomes Olive and Felix Unger becomes Florence as they test the bounds of friendship and cleanliness. They prove that when it comes to sharing a living space, women can be just as odd a couple as men. And they can do it in heels. The fifth production in the theater’s Season of Simon, “The Odd Couple” is offered this summer in two flavors. Throughout July, it features a mostly female cast, while in August the story will be told from the traditional male point of view. “Normally, in the summer we do an eightweek run,” said director Rich Emery. “That’s a big commitment for cast members. So we decided to split the play into genders.” Emery, who comes from a 35-year stint of teaching accounting at Linfield College, says that most of the challenges that have surfaced in staging this production have involved the numerous set changes. But he credits set designer Bruce Jackson with handling this with aplomb. “Blocking was another challenge,” he said. “There is lots of moving around on stage.” But Emery was more than up for the task. Both an actor and director at Theatre West, he believes that all actors should direct at least one play, to see how it all comes together. And come together it does, once you get past the fact that Joy Gallagher as Olive, looks nothing like Walter Matthau, who starred as Oscar in the play’s original 1968 film version of the 1965 Broadway production. Nonetheless, she pulls off the role with a kind of convincing bravado as she takes in newly separated fussy Florence, played by Roseanne Johnson, and then grapples with her new roomie’s proclivities toward neatness and hypochondria. Johnson’s Flo is a whiny neat freak, who sets happily sloppy Olive on edge. Olive explains that she prefers to spend her time writing and

doing things other than cleaning, as evidenced by the clutter of clothes and food remnants strewn about the place. But Flo’s priorities are different. She provides us with more than a hint about why her husband wants a divorce with all of her incessant vacuuming, cleaning, sinus clearing and nut arranging. She even insists on cleaning the air, driving not only Olive, but some of their friends batty. As the Trivial Pursuit-playing pals, Robin Kirsch as Sylvie, Patti Siberz as Mickey, Terri King as Renee and Stina Seeger-Gibson as Vera, are a jovial bunch, perfectly at home with dispensing kitchen table wisdom, while munching on potato chips. And they are good friends. They worry when Olive writes too many checks to her former spouse, who constantly calls asking for money. And they worried when Flo dropped hints about killing herself as a result of a broken heart. But they also are
familiar with Flo’s rather annoying tendencies, as she dispenses napkins, tea sandwiches and rules about using coasters. Other visitors to the once messy, now pristine apartment include two Spanish brothers, neighbors with dating potential. Manolo and Jesus Costazuela, adroitly played by Steve Griffiths and Andrew Schmitz, easily draw laughs from the audience as they attempt to bridge both language and etiquette barriers with Olive and Flo. And they are able to connect with the doleful Flo on an emotional level, even over a picture of landscaping, much to the consternation of Olive, who simply wants to have a good time. The female version of “The Odd Couple,” adapted by Simon from his original, debuted on Broadway in 1985. It basically follows the same story line, with tweaks here and there to compensate for gender change. One of the
funniest involves Spanish brothers’ desperate attempts to be polite. Some of Simon’s plays can seem a bit anachronistic to today’s audiences. But there is no denying his biting wit. It’s enough to keep audiences laughing even in 2017. So if you could use a laugh or two, check out Theatre West’s female version of “The Odd Couple” — and then come back for seconds in August for a dose of male angst. “The Odd Couple” is presented Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm through July 29, with one Saturday matinée at 2 pm on July 16. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $13 for seniors (60 and over) and students over 12. For tickets call 541994-5663. Theatre West is located at 3536 SE Hwy. 101, Lincoln City. BRINGING IT HOME I
Lincoln City sizzles with Beach, Bacon & Brews
n any poll of the best way to spend a summer day on the Oregon Coast, the beach, a cold beer and some crispy bacon are likely to be among the top finishers. So, top marks to Lincoln City’s Chinook Winds Casino Resort for bringing all three together at Beach, Bacon & Brews, which returns for its third year this Saturday, July 15. Held on the casino’s oceanfront lot, the fun-filled event will see charity cooking teams serving up bacon bites for guests to enjoy, with all proceeds from bacon bit sales going straight to the good causes. Using meat provided by Sunnyvalley Bacon, the charity teams will be competing to win votes from the tasting public, who can buy bacon bit tickets at a dollar apiece to sample the delectable creations. Among the competitors is Family Promise of Lincoln City, which helps homeless families get back on their feet and find stable accomodation. As its main entry, the group will be presenting a four-week cured bacon chorizo wrapped around four-week cured pork belly, served with stout mustard and sea bean salad. And, in the spirit of truly bringing bacon and brews together, the group will also be pouring a sea-salted bacon cream beer-float. The Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce will also have a team at the event, giving guests the choice of Cuban grilled sandwiches; a guava
and bacon bite; grilled, baconwrapped jalapeños; and baconwrapped dates. In addition to the bacon recipe competition there will be food vendors selling a variety of menu items. And more than 20 breweries from all over Oregon and beyond will be on hand to serve up tastes of beer and cider, with local favorites Rusty Truck Brewing of Lincoln City and Pelican Brewing of Pacific City joined by Salem’s Gilgamish Brewing, Backwoods Brewing Company of Carson, Washington, and more. Portland’s Ground Breaker Brewing will be pouring tastes of its gluten-free range of beers while Forbidden Fruit Ciderhouse of Corvallis will have some suitably summery offerings on tap. Throughout the afternoon, the stage will be buzzing with live music, starting with a performance from blues star Ty Curtis from noon to 1:30 pm. The Rock N Roll Cowboys will take over from 2 to 3:30 pm, followed by a closing set of bombastic rock from the Mike Branch Band from 4 to 5:30 pm. ARTISTS THROW A LITTLE SHADE
Blaine Johnson from Camas, Washington, will give a plein air painting demonstration at Friday’s opening
Art that focuses on the upcoming total solar eclipse will be on display this Friday, July 14, when “Moon Shadow” opens at the Artists’ Studio Association in Lincoln City. The show, which features pieces from students and members of ASA alongside work by the instructors, will open with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm. Refreshments will be served and guests will get to see artist demonstrations, including plein air painting by Blaine Johnson and Merren Garland and Chinese watercolor from Laurie Pollack. The show will feature works completed within the past year by beginner, intermediate and advanced artists in media including watercolor, oils, acrylic, mixed media, pastel, pen and ink, block printing, photography and mosaics. Most of the art will be for sale during the show, which will remain on display through July 29. The featured Artists of the Month are the Art Smart Kids Class for seven to 13 year olds, taught by instructor Krista Eddy this spring. The Artists’ Studio Association is located at 620 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to www.asaart.net.
Susan P. Hanson will give a Kumihumo braiding demonstration
A five o’clock shadow The Moon Shadow theme has also inspired members of the Artists’ Co-op Gallery, who will be showing their works at a simultaneous opening in the same building. From 5 to 7 pm, the artist-run gallery will be serving up light refreshments and showcasing a host of member-created artwork from jewelry and textiles to metal sculpture and paintings. In addition to plein air painting demonstrations by Catherine Hingson and Carol Jurasin, guests will be treated to glass artist Susan P. Hanson’s introduction to the ancient Japanese Kumihumo braiding technique, once used by samurai warriors to decorate their armor. Pam Young will be demonstrating the clay-working techniques she uses to create whimsical pieces ranging from vases and backyard plaques to tea pots and coffee cups — all inspired by nature. The Artists’ Co-op Gallery is located at 620 NE Hwy. 101.
Some light entertainment Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery will shed some light on the area’s artistic talent this Friday, July 14, with the opening of “Illuminated,” the latest members’ art show from the Lincoln City Cultural Center. The show will open with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm, offering the chance to mingle with some of the member artists while enjoying wine and light refreshments. artists. “This show always offers a dazzling array of different types of art from painting to jewelry, sculpture to textiles, up-cycled metal lamps to fused glass and pottery to metal work,” she said, adding: “This year the theme is “Illuminated”: a word of mystique and many definitions from ‘illuminated light’ to ‘gilded’ to ‘an inspirational idea.’ It is always a joy to view what the theme means to each individual artist involved in the exhibit.” “The annual LCCC Members Art Show is essential to who we are as
an organization,” said cultural center Executive Director Niki Price. “We are here to serve our local artists and the arts community, and to provide ways for our friends and neighbors to express themselves creatively.” The show will run through Aug. 5 available to view from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Tuesdays at the Chessman Gallery, located inside the cultural center at 540 NE Hwy. 101 For more information, call 541-9949994 or go to lincolncity-culturalcenter. org.

FLEET STREET Dory Days on the horizon in Pacific City
P
By Ann Powers acific City locals are more likely to know each other by their dory boat names, rather than what their parents decided to call them at birth, according to Nancy Bush. And she would know — Bush was one of the first women to go out commercial dory fishing off the sandy beaches of Cape Kiwanda nearly 50 years ago. “Once a dory woman, always a dory woman,” Bush said. “It’s beautiful out there. It’s just a different way of living.” From Friday, July 14, to Sunday, July 16, the public is invited to experience that unparalleled lifestyle during the Pacific City’s 58th Annual Dory Days; a threeday celebration of the dory fishing. Hosted by the Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Pacific City Dorymen’s Association (PCDA), the theme for this year’s festivities is, “Let the Good Times Roll.” Which they most certainly will, given the event’s family-friendly, fun-filled schedule including an old-fashioned parade showcasing a fleet of authentic dories, an artisan fair, fishing competition, pancake breakfast, fish fry, filet contest, dune climb, live music, kids activities and more. “It’s usually a pretty big draw to the area,” said Melita Spath, Dory Days co-chair. “It celebrates tradition and teaches youth about those traditions. We have a very unique history.” The dory originated from the turn-of-the-20th-Century surf dories and Nestucca River gill net boats that sold fish to the salmon cannery established in 1887, according to the PCDA. After 1927, commercial fishing was only allowed in the open ocean. Because the Nestucca had a shallow and dangerous bar accessible only at flood tide, a new larger surf boat was needed — and the “double ender” was born. It was pointed at both

coast culture The modern Pacific City dory is open hulled and flat bottomed. It’s pushed or rowed into the Pacific surf, until deep enough to drop the outboard motor, and then powered through the surf into the open ocean. But even with motors, many dory men and women still row through the surf like their ancestors before them. “We never had any problem,” said Bush, who can filet a fish in 23 seconds flat and still fishes occasionally with her family on their boat named Short Shot — which is also Bush’s nickname. “It was fun. But, boy, it was hard work.” The dory fleet is also well known for its stellar safety record and committed call to action. Local officials said dory men and woman are frequently the first responders to distress calls and other marine emergencies. Dory Days started in the ’50s as the “Fly-in Fish Fry.” While many things have changed, the fry has continued almost every year since the festival’s debut. This year, the fish hits the pan from 11:30 am to 6 pm at the Kiawanda Community Center. Children’s activities are also scheduled during the feast. The Pacific City Dorymen’s Association was founded in 1996 with the primary mission to preserve and protect the historic traditions given to the community by the pioneers of the dory fleet. Dory Days is a significant part of that preservation and protection. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department recently added the Dory Days Parade and Festival to Oregon Heritage Traditions, a short list of events that encapsulate the character of the state. “This is our 58th year and it’s really important to keep our heritage going,” said PCDA’s Randy Haltiner. “This event represents our whole community. We’re teaching our kids and grandkids about our traditions in Cape Kiwanda.” The PCDA will operate a booth to answer questions from the public and have display of dory boats in the Cape parking. Spath said Dory Days proceeds benefit community events, scholarships and the Dorymen’s Association. For more information, go to www. pcnvchamber.org/event-calendar.

Thistle be fun
For you and your loved ones in Lincoln City, Tillamook and Manzanita. Open Sundays.
The Nature Conservancy is looking for volunteers to help tackle a prickly problem at Cascade Head Preserve just north of Lincoln City in a work party on Saturday, July 22. Volunteers will be removing Canada thistle from the Pinnacle, an area of the preserve that is closed to the public. The coastal promontory provides critical habitat for native prairie grasses, rare wildflowers, the threatened
Oregon Silverspot butterfly and the Cascade Head catchfly. The work party includes a four-to-five-mile roundtrip hike with elevation gain and might require volunteers to hike off trail and stand on uneven ground while working. Participants should bring hiking shoes, a daypack, lunch and snacks, a full water bottle, layers of clothing, raingear, a hat and sunscreen. Those who have work gloves should bring them, although some pairs
will be available to borrow. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call 503-802-8100, email orvolunteers@tnc.org or call the alternate contact, Debbie Pickering, at 541994-5564.

the 1990s. Willer will also provide new information on who owns Western Oregon’s private forests and how that ownership affects management objectives. The talk, which is free and open to all, will run from 6 to 7 pm at Tillamook Central Library, 1716 3rd Street.
What lies beneath? What does your underwear drawer reveal about you? Find out on Thursday, July 20, when sociologist Michelle Janning appears in Manzanita to present “The Stuff of Family Life: How Our Homes Reflect Our Lives.” “I am not a sociologist who uses large national datasets to illustrate family life,” Janning said. “I’m the sociologist who asks people to examine what’s in their underwear drawers and living rooms to tell stories about their family life.” Using amusing anecdotes, as well as drawing on pop culture, economics, interior design, gender studies and

more, Janning combines the educational with the entertaining to make “The Stuff of Family Life” accessible to both casual readers and dedicated students of sociology. Janning looks at various stages of life — from dating and marriage to parenting and aging — that are usually kept behind closed doors. From online Valentines to the growing popularity of man caves, “The Stuff of Family Life” explores not only what large demographic studies say about family dynamics but also what our lives — and the stuff in them — say about
how we relate to each other. The presentation, part of the Art of Aging/of Dying series, will run from 4 to 6 pm at the Hoffman Center for the Arts, 594 Laneda Avenue. Admission is $5. For more information, go to www.hoffmanblog.org or contact Tela Skinner at telaskinner@gmail.com.
