CLOVERDALE — The secret to a happy life? Keep mooo-ving. And it’s advice that the good folk of this dairy town have taken to heart ever since they picked a handsome cow named Clover to lead the very ďŹ rst Clover’s Day Parade 35 years ago. Clovers have come and gone in the years since, but this small town parade still oers a grand day out, with the option of capping it o with ďŹ reworks in nearby PaciďŹ c City. See page 6
2
YACHATS — Dueling banjos, synchronized umbrella twirling and a mechanized pooping seagull can mean only one thing, the la-de-da Parade is back for another Fourth of July packed with low-tech fun and high spirits. A carnival atmosphere
throughout town will keep visitors busy until ďŹ reworks over the bay at dusk. See page 7
3
GLENEDEN BEACH — And if you prefer your parades with a little more va-room, bring your lawn chair and grab a spot for this procession, where vintage cars and elaborate oats will share the road with horses, musicians and a marching band. Fireworks over nearby Siletz Bay will bring the evening to a close. See page 5

ROCKAWAY BEACH — Few things capture the essence of freedom quite like a wiener dog in full gallop. So it is ďŹ tting

WALDPORT — And for those who prefer to spend their Fourth of July weekend peering downward rather than gazing up, Ranger “Clameronâ€? Rauenhorst is on hand to oer two full days of mud-digging, prize-winning action as Clam-a-Rama returns to Alsea Bay. See coast calendar, pages 14 & 15

Newport’s fireworks can be seen from miles around, even up the Yaquina River
Start (and end) with a bang Newport’s Independence Day celebrations will start with runners hitting the street and end with thousands of revelers turning their gaze skyward for one of the largest ďŹ reworks displays in Oregon. The morning’s 4th of July Celebration Run, hosted by Ardor Adventures, will oer participants the choice of 10k, 5k and Kids Fun Run routes, all on paved roads, as well as a half-marathon on pavements and trails. Runners will set o from the Rogue Brewery on the shore of Yaquina Bay at 8:30 am. Registration, $30 for the half-marathon, $25 for the 10k and $20 for the 5k, is available online at www. ardoradventures.com. Yaquina Bay will also be the scene of the evening’s Fourth of July ďŹ reworks display, with the sound of the 1,100 mortars ampliďŹ ed three or fourfold as it bounces o the surrounding hills. The central location allows people to see the display from all over town, from the hills to

the bayfront and even some of the beaches. Meanwhile, many of Newport’s boat charter services oer bay trips during the ďŹ reworks show, with some adding to the display by ďŹ ring o ares into the air. One place where people are guaranteed a great view along with a drink, a snack and even the chance to show o their foxtrot, is the PaciďŹ c Maritime Heritage Center on Newport’s bayfront, which will be hosting its Fireworks 150 fund-raiser on Monday evening. The event commemorates the 150th anniversary of a gathering seen by many as pivotal in the town’s history. In July 1866, some 700 people gathered at the construction site of the Ocean House Hotel, the ďŹ rst resort hotel on the Oregon Coast, located on a hillside above Yaquina Bay where the Coast Guard Station stands today. At the time, Newport was a “town siteâ€? a mere square mile in size, surrounded by Confederated Tribes of Siletz Reservation land on three
sides and the ocean on the other. If historical reports are to be believed, it was at this gathering that the name “Newportâ€? was chosen for the edgling community, which boosters regarded as “the germ of the San Francisco of Oregon.â€? Hosted by the Lincoln County Historical Society, the Fireworks 150 event will feature refreshments, beverages and live music from local band The Renovators. Guests will also have access to all the museum’s exhibits as well as unmatched views of the ďŹ reworks display. The event will begin at 8 pm at the center, 333 Bay Blvd. Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available for purchase at the center, at The Burrows House Museum, by phone, or at the door. Proceeds will go towards renovation of the center. For more information or to buy tickets by phone, call 541-265-7509.
THE FO UR T H AWA KENS Fourth of July in Gleneden Beach is a feast for the senses, with a pancake breakfast to titillate the taste buds, the colorful Independence Day parade to treat the eyes — and even kids’ pony rides to keep the nose twitching. But, as the event returns for its 22nd year this Monday, July 4, guests will also be invited to prick up their ears for an added delight. “This year we will finally have a band,” said parade organizer Louise Cremeen, who was thrilled when Dave Barton, the new McMinnville High School Band director, got in touch earlier this year to offer the group’s services. The band will provide the soundtrack to the day as floats of all descriptions make their way along Gleneden Beach Loop, proudly showing off their triumphs in categories including Best Family, Most Patriotic, Best Music, Best Service Association and — of course — the Grand Prize. Meanwhile, kids will receive trophies for Best Animal, Best Bike, Most Creative, Best 9 and Under Individual and Best 10-14 Individual. Serving as grand marshal this year is Christian Jesse of Newport, who in 2015 won the Eagle Scout rank, the highest honor that scouting organization bestows. Cremeen considers Jesse’s presence an honor for the entire central coast community. “This is big stuff,” she said. “Only a few scouts are chosen to receive this prestigious recognition throughout the whole country.” The day’s festivities will start with a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 am at the Gleneden Beach Community Hall, 110 Azalea Street,
where adults can eat their fill for $6 apiece. Breakfast is $3 for children aged four to 10 and free for kids aged three and under. From 9 am to 3 pm, a craft fair featuring 40 booths of food and work by local artisans will be on offer in the patio of the post office and the parking lot next to Eden Hall. Pony rides, provided by Green Acres Beach and Trail Rides, will be available for $5 a time before and during the parade at Blake’s Nursery, 6750 Gleneden Beach Road. The parade itself will begin at 11 am, with floats accompanied by ‘candy walkers’ who will drop candy and prizes into plastic bags that will be distributed on
site, reducing the chance of anyone getting cold cocked by a Jolly Rancher. While pre-registration
is encouraged, anyone who shows up, pays the $20 filing fee and shows their driver’s license and insurance information by 11 am on the morning of the parade can still take part. Parking is available Salishan Marketplace & Golf Club, the new Red Dog Bakery (formerly the Unity by the Sea Church), and the Gleneden Beach State Park. Disabled parking will be available at Radar Plumbing on Gleneden Beach Loop Road. A free shuttle bus will be available to ferry guests from Salishan parking lot and the state park. For more information, contact Cremeen at 541-9218796.

Now that’s a software launch While drones cause some people heartburn and driverless cars lead others to panic, the prospect of a computer controlled fireworks display seems to be a win-win for Lincoln City. This year’s Fourth of July fireworks display over Siletz Bay will be the city’s first featuring electronically timed fireworks for a better viewing experience. “Our world-class fireworks display over Siletz Bay will achieve a new level of excellence this year,” said Ed Dreistadt, director of the Lincoln City Visitor
& Convention Bureau. “We are adding computertimed launches and music synchronization to the biggest and best fireworks show we’ve ever done.” Public parking is available in the area and a free shuttle will operate from 6 pm until midnight to ferry spectators from Oregon Coast Community College at 3788 SE High School Drive and Taft High School at 3780 SE Galley Court. For more information, contact the Lincoln City Visitor & Convention Bureau at 800-452-2151 or go to www.oregoncoast.org.

Cow much fun is this? If a single guest of honor had been at the center of your town’s festival for 35 years, you could justifiably accuse them of milking it. Fortunately for Cloverdale, the cow for whom the annual Clover’s Day Festival is named has changed over several times since the event debuted in the small dairy town back in 1981. And on Saturday, July 2, the current Clover the Cow will follow in the hoof-prints of those who have gone before as she leads the parade from Nestucca High School into downtown Cloverdale. Parade participants can fuel up for the day at a pancake breakfast, served from 7 to 10 am at the school. Floats and marchers start lining up at the high school at 10 am and, when everyone is ready, the parade heads down the hill, timed to make its appearance on Highway 101 at noon. Little kids, town notables, antique cars, fire engines and other machinery, horses and more will all fall in line behind Clover, who will be led by Tillamook County Dairy Princess Ambassador Kalli Swanson. This year’s Grand Marshals are Kim and Mark Cavatorta, the couple behind the Slug Soup kids art camp. Special cars have been invited to participate, with owners of classics, antiques and hot rods invited to drive in the parade, or just show off their ride in the outdoor Show-and-Shine. Prizes will be given all cars entered in the parade. For more information, call Tom at 503-329-8345. The parade route will be lined with kids’ games and activities, including a bouncy house, face painting, horseand-buggy rides, a smallanimal show and more. Countryfied, one of the Northwest’s premier country music groups, will entertain

outdoors from 11 am to about 3:30 pm and a beer garden will serve up local craft ales from noon to 4 pm. A wandering juggler will provide ongoing entertainment while guests peruse a range of vendors, including the Lions Club booth, which serves up the festival’s renowned elephant ears.
Free parking will be available in the pasture across the Nestucca River near Bridge Street. Towards dusk, guests can make the six-mile trip south to Pacific City to watch the Independence Day fireworks display over the beach at Bob Straub State Park.
For a third year running, Lincoln City will enjoy a preFourth of July extravaganza, when the Devils Lake Neighborhood Association fireworks display illuminates the skies above the lake on Sunday, July 3. The show, choreographed by Western Fireworks, will begin at 9:30 pm and last for 20 to 30 minutes, with fireworks launched off a barge near Brown Bear Park. As well as being visible to spectators on land from D River Wayside, Regatta Park and Sand Point Park, the display also offers boaters the chance to take in the show while afloat on the lake itself. To maximize safety, a boat restriction zone will be established around the

fireworks barge. Donations of any amount to cover the cost of the display are welcome. Contact Max Hanson at maxh@siskiyouins. net or follow the donation link at www.dlakeoregon.com. To make the day complete, the association will also be leading a boat parade, beginning in front of Regatta Park at 7 pm. Residents

are encouraged to deck their boats with patriotic decorations and take a lap around the lake to celebrate. Longtime lake residents remember the Fourth of July boat parades drawing large numbers. Last year, some 60 vessels participated in the comeback event, and organizers are anticipating even greater numbers this year.
On the day after the display, boaters and walkers alike are invited to lend a hand at the annual 4th of July Devils Lake Clean-up. Also hosted by the Devils Lake Neighborhood Association, the cleanup will run from 10 am to 2 pm, with meet-up spots at Regatta Park and Holmes Road Wayside, both on the west side of the lake, and East Devils Lake State Park, on the east side of the lake. SOLVE Oregon will provide bags, gloves and more, allowing participants to float, motor, paddle or hike in to keep the lake beautiful.
A PARTY FOR THE AGES*
fourth of july
(*except 39-year-olds)
Is there anything on Earth quite as smug as a 39-yearold? Old enough to be clear of the post-college blues but still shy of the big 4-oh and the soul searching that comes with it — these infuriatingly well-adjusted people know what they want from life and still have the energy to go after it. So it is fitting that these know-it-alls find themselves excluded from one of the Oregon Coast’s most fun activities, the Yachats la-de-da Parade, which has blacklisted anyone aged 39 ever since the event first began in 1996. And even if a 39 year old does happen to sneak in, there’s no chance of them making off with any prizes, because there aren’t any. “We don’t have the money or any honest judges,” organizers say. Now in its 21st year, the parade is still determined not to take itself to seriously, with entries including dueling banjos, the Synchronized Umbrella Drill Team and a cardboard seagull puppet, complete with real poop action. A people-powered parade, la-de-da is for non-motorized floats only, with the notable exception of the Yachats City Council float — because, organizers say, power has to come with some privileges. Entrants will assemble at 11 am on Monday, July 4, outside the Yachats Commons at 441 Hwy. 101 and the parade will start at noon, heading north through the driveway of the Yachats Presbyterian Church; west on W. 7th Street and south on Ocean View Drive to Beach Street, finishing at the Post Office. The parade is just one of the reasons to visit Yachats this Independence Day, with a host of other activities on offer, all leading up to a fireworks display over the bay at about 10 pm. Food options will be popping up in places people might not expect, such as the Lions Pancake Breakfast, running from 7:30 to 11:30 am at the Yachats Lions Hall, W 4th & Pontiac Street. Not to be outdone, the Waldport Lions will be running a sausage grill with all the fixings in front of Yachats Video Country Store at 262 Hwy. 101. The Yachats Ladies Club will be setting up their famed “River of Pie” for the July 4 Pie & Ice Cream Social, starting at 10:30 am in the clubhouse at W. 3rd and Pontiac and running until 2:30 pm or whenever the pie runs out. The Yachats Volunteer Fire Department will be serving up burgers and hot dogs with all the fixings by the fire hall at W 2nd Street. At 2:30 pm, the action will shift to just south of downtown, at Yachats Ocean Road State Park, where the annual kids’ duck race will see a flock of brightly colored duckies making a beeline for the ocean. People can sponsor a duck for $5 or three for $10, with prizes awarded to the sponsors of the 20 fastest specimens. Proceeds benefit the Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program, which, along with the Yachats Visitors Center and Yachats Farmers Market, is selling advance tickets. For more information, call 541-547-4599. A walking guide to shops and restaurants is available at the Yachats Visitors Center, 241 Hwy. 101.
Dachsh to Rockaway Beach this July 4
Members of the Yachats Red Hot Rock Band show how it’s done
From a patriotic parade to darting dachshunds and roaring rockets, Rockaway Beach is one of the most action-packed places to celebrate Fourth of July on the Oregon Coast. The fun begins at 11 am with the town’s Independence Parade and continues throughout the day at the Ocean’s Edge Wayside, with a paintball tent, mini golf and a flyover by the National Guard. Meanwhile, at Phyllis Baker City Park, the Firecracker Weiner Nationals will return for their 10th year, offering an afternoon of weiner dog racing, a trick contest, hotdogs, brats, comedians and more. Lazy weiner dogs can opt out of the racing and try their luck at the costume contest instead, while an allbreed race will give dogs of all
shapes and sizes the chance to stretch their legs. Cats, as always, are strictly prohibited. The races will run from 1 to 3 pm at the park, located at 3rd Street and Coral. At about 10 pm, crowds gather at the Ocean’s Edge Wayside or on beaches throughout town for the spectacular fireworks display presented by the Rockaway Beach Volunteer Fire Department. The display is spectacular enough to be named one of the best in the United States by Coastal Living magazine. For people planning their own display, sparklers and fireworks are on sale at various booths throughout town, operated by groups including the Rockaway Lions, the chamber of commerce and the Neah-Kah-Nie speech team.

Then, the actors, directors and technicians show up; and at 8 pm on Saturday, July 2, the five shows will take to the stage for their world premiers in front of a live theater audience. No one has any way of knowing what the five plays will be — comedy, drama, farce, tragedy … even a musical — but the writers will be asked to keep the pieces appropriate for people aged 13 and up. CAPTAIN DAN’S PIRATE PASTRY SHOP BRACES FOR A BANNER WEEKEND
Lincoln City has been a sweeter place to live and to visit ever since Kathy and Dan Draper planted their Jolly Roger at the corner of SE 51st Street and Hwy. 101, in the Taft district. But the trusty old skull and crossbones will be playing second fiddle to another, more colorful, flag this weekend, as the piratical pair welcome the influx of visitors heading to the beach for the July Fourth weekend. The lively shop, where sweet treats collide head on with a helping of wiseass wit, is a veritable treasure trove of cookies, pies, cakes and pastries — all served up with a pirate theme. Chief among the offerings is the shop’s undisputed bestseller — the shipwreck turnover. “It’s probably the only baked good on the seven seas that combines apples, cream cheese and caramel with the sweet bounty of BACON,” Dan said. “We called it a shipwreck because that’s what it looked like when we took it out of the oven.” Bacon also plays a key role in the couple’s newest offering, a savory turnover called the Jalapeño Popper, combining cream cheese, pepperjack cheese and jalapeños with bacon on top for a treat that is hot as a firecracker. Before embracing the pirate lifestyle, Kathy and Dan earned their stripes as banking stars in the Portland Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank and other financial institutions. Dan likes to say that when he was with the Fed, he couldn’t even see the box to think out of. Since they opened their pastry shop in February 2008, he has been a full-time pirate, wearing a leather tricorner hat and dispensing the pirate puns. “This is a fun job,” he said. “It’s the world’s greatest job. It gets me out of the neighborhood, and off the street. We’re still really passionate about what we do.” The shop’s cases are filled with freshly made turnovers, chewy chocolate-draped macaroons and sweet, fruity muffin tops. They’re all old-fashioned recipes, stolen from Kathy’s little old pirate grandma.
The Drapers have decorated their restaurant with nautical details, smart-aleck signs, driftwood art and a mechanical parrot named Polly. In between the cookies, pies and cakes you’ll find maple cinnamon rolls, macaroons and Pirate Eyes (small tarts filled with jam). As Cap’n Dan loves to snarl, “It’s just another day in Pirate Eyes.” Kathy, who was a prize-winning baker long before they opened the shop, believes in old family recipes, like layer cakes, made with real butter and shortening, real whipped cream and fresh eggs, and Northwest favorites like marionberries and hazelnuts. She prides herself on an extra-flaky pie crust and cookies that you can’t stop eating. The rolls and coffee go down easy with a cup of joe from the Pirate Coffee Company, an unaffiliated but equally arrr-dent roasting and retail shop in Depoe Bay. The Drapers grind each batch as they brew it, so the coffee is always fresh and flavorful. Customers are welcome to take their bounty and leave, but if they stay, Cap’n Dan and his first mate try to show them a good time. They provide coloring pages and books at a kid-level counter, open to children and adults alike. And everything will be shipshape and looking its best this holiday weekend, when the July Fourth fireworks at nearby Siletz Bay combine with beach weather to give Dan and Kathy one of their busiest times of the year. “It takes a certain kind of Disney personality, because people can be hard sometimes,” Dan said. “I wish that every customer was like that little boy who came in and said, “Mr. Pirate! I waited ALL NIGHT to come here!” I hope that boy remembers me, because I will remember him. Maybe he’ll come visit me someday in the nursing home.”
Above: Dan and Kathy Draper show an unflagging dedication to quality baking Left and below: Treats on offer include a wide variety of marine-themed cookies
Captain Dan’s Pirate Pastry Shop, at the corner of SW 51st Street and Hwy. 101 in the Taft neighborhood of Lincoln
City, is open from 8:30 am to 4 pm every day except Tuesday. You’ll find menus on the web at www.piratepastry.com. For details or to order ahead, call 541-9964600.

Last letter to Sonny Dear Sonny: I write this several hours after your death. I’m sitting on the couch thinking I can still hear you snoozing away in your favorite chair, more of a throne, really. Rain is ripping through the neighborhood. Crows on the lawn are eating the last of your kibble. We managed a ďŹ nal visit to the ocean before going to the veterinarian. It didn’t last long but there was beauty in that evanescence. The waves were breaking a crisp white over a blue and green sea. A few gulls ew overhead. We were the only ones around, something I have always relished. Just you, me and the ocean. I’ve written a million words in my head that way. Almost 17 years together. What a team we were. We set unbreakable beachcombing records — over 10,000 rambles down Oregon’s publicly-owned beaches. We built a rich history of mystery, hi jinks and revelation. One of my favorite accomplishments is making you a famous dog on the Oregon Coast. Everywhere I went, people wanted to meet you and I’ll never forget the waitress at a Lincoln City restaurant who

gave me free bacon for you or the garbage man in Gleneden Beach who got out of his truck to meet you. In the ďŹ nal moment, I thanked you for the wonderful companionship. I said I loved you and then I felt the life leave your body. It was time to go. I walked into the rain and wondered what course my new life would take without you. A few hours from now, I will don the pea coat covered in your fur and visit the beach by myself — a strange undeďŹ ned territory. I’ll walk and keep walking in rain and let it wash over me. Goodbye dear friend. I know one day soon you will return to me as rain. You can rest assured that I will recognize when that happens. And I will never take the pea coat to the dry cleaners. MISS-ED
The Newport Symphony Orchestra will welcome Oregon’s very own Miss America Katie Harman to lead its free community concert this Monday, July 4. Harman was crowned Miss America just days after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, clinching the title with an elegant and emotional performance of a beloved Puccini aria. Her first official appearances were to visit rescue workers at the World Trade Center site and the Pentagon. Directed by Maestro Adam Flatt, the free concert on the Fourth is the Newport Symphony Orchestra’s annual gift to the community. Filled with patriotic pops, swinging big band songs and military marches, the concert is a big hit year after year with young and old alike. The concert will begin at 4 pm at Newport Middle School, 825 NE 7th Street. This year, the orchestra is inviting guests to come early and set themselves up for the show with hamburgers, salads and soft drinks at an afternoon cookout. The cookout starts at 2:30 pm and adults can join the meal for $10, children just $5.

The free Fourth of July concert is just one part of the Newport Symphony Orchestra’s annual summer festival of music. The series will conclude this year with two performances featuring living legend Judy Collins. Collins, who burst on to the international music stage in 1967 with her album “Wildflowers,” has since sustained a successful, worldwide career with vocal talents and interests that cross genres of folk, rock and even Broadway standards. She will perform with the Newport Symphony Orchestra for two evening shows at 7:30 pm on Friday, July 8, and Saturday, July 9, at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, ranging from $55 to $95, are available at the box office and online at NewportSymphony.org. Season tickets are also on sale now for the orchestra’s regular season of classical performances from September 2016 through March 2017.

Lincoln City rejoices as Ben Cosgrove returns to the coast Composer, pianist and multiinstrumentalist Ben Cosgrove is visiting the Oregon Coast as part of his summer tour, performing a concert in Lincoln City on Thursday, July 7, followed by a workshop at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on Saturday, July 9. Based in New England, Cosgrove performs regularly all over the country, writes scores for films, plays, radio and television, and has produced several wellreceived albums of original instrumental music. His live performances on solo piano are at once dazzling and intimate, the music both delicate and commanding. He weaves his music with his studies in environmental thought and authorship as well as his own writings on sound, art and landscape. In recent years, his interests in landscape, place and ecology have become the strongest forces guiding his composition and performances. “I don’t think of my pieces as rendering places in music,” he said, “but more just as responding to
places musically. Writing music just turns out to be a great way for me to process the world.” For years, Cosgrove has been inspired by the ways people respond to both built and natural environments, and through songs with names like “Prairie Fire,” “I am Walking Inland,” “Nashua” and others, he seeks to recreate these phenomena with sound. A year spent researching the preservation of natural soundscapes in America’s national parks has also shaped much of his new material. “I’m interested in the relationship between sound and a sense of place,” he said. “So much of the North American soundscape is becoming clouded with drones and mechanized noise that it’s quickly losing the rich diversity you see in the continent’s visual landscape.” In addition to his solo work, Cosgrove has performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of other artists that includes David Berkeley, Saint Anyway, Charlie Christos, Jamie Kallestad, Wisewater and Dedric Clark and the Social Animals.
The July 7 concert will begin at 7 pm in the auditorium of the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Hwy. 101. Tickets, $14 in advance, $16 at the door, are available online at lincolncityculturalcenter.org or by calling 541-994-9994. The doors will open at 6:30 pm. Volunteers will be selling Northwest beers and wines along with My Petite Sweet cookies and brownies, and Mountain Man nuts and snacks, with proceeds benefiting the center. • On Saturday, July 9, Cosgrove will lead a workshop entitled “Reflecting Place in Music” at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Otis. Beginning at 10 am, he will lead students in an exploration of place and landscape in the compositions of others, as well as the development of students’ individual songs based on place. The fee for the workshop is $120 and pre-registration is required. To sign up, go to sitkacenter.org or call 541-994-5485.
Yachats gets fresh for summer
Byron Case and Skip Jones
Yachats will launch its new series of free outdoor summer concerts this Sunday, July 3, with a performance from Skip Jones and The Spirit of New Orleans with special guest Paul Biondi. The combination of classic rhythm and blues plus some boogie-woogie piano and Biondi’s saxophone magic will make for one hot summer afternoon. While Skip Jones is at home on both piano and organ in a number of musical styles, he always returns to his New Orleans influences, such as Booker T. and the MGs, Doctor John, James Booker and Professor Longhair. “Our shows are like a blues travelogue,” he said, “but we always return to New Orleans.” Jones has worked with The Coasters, The Drifters, The Platters and Bo Diddley. He

Approach this game with relish The joys of pickleball will be on display this Sunday and Monday, July 3 and 4, in a pair of expo events taking place in Lincoln City and Newport. Invented in 1965 by a US congressman improvising with ping pong paddles and a badminton net, the game has in recent years enjoyed a burst of popularity among retiring Baby Boomers, who find it easier on the joints than tennis. Played on a badminton court with hard paddles and a Wiffle-
style ball, the game is quick to learn and suitable for players of all ages. “Our oldest member is 79,” said Larry Brammer of the Lincoln City pickleball club. “We have several people in their 70s. We can basically have people playing a game within 15 minutes after giving them instructions.” The first of the two expo events will take place at the pickleball courts behind Dorchester House, 2701 NW Hwy. 101, from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday, July 3. Six courts will be on offer, with one
reserved for absolute beginners, complete with instruction and loaner paddles. There will also be a challenge court for advanced players. For more information, call Rod Kaufmann at 541-921-8052. On Monday, July 4, a similar event at Newport’s Frank Wade Park, 1445 NE Big Creek Road, will offer pickleball for players of all levels, complete with food and music, from 9 am to 2 pm. For more information on the Newport event, call Tom Widden at 503718-4496.

Nest up at Sitka... Portland fine art painter Annamieka Hopps Davidson will share her creative journey at the Tuesday, July 5, Mingle & Muse event at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology near Lincoln City. Davidson’s vivid works explore themes of hope and healing with imagery of humanity and the natural world. Davidson grew up playing in the woods of Eugene, and went on to earn her BFA in Fine Art from the University of Oregon. In her teens and 20s, she spent time in Bali and Mexico, where she found her work influenced by exposure to Balinese Hindu rituals, Batik and the vibrant colors of Mexican culture. Davidson is no stranger to the Sitka center, having worked there as studio tech in 2007 as well as painting at the center’s booth during Art in the Pearl.
