Serving up a seis of advice Lincoln City business expert Dr. Alberto Flores will show a flair for more than numbers on Wednesday, June 28, when he presents his “Six Steps to a Better Business” entirely in Spanish. The presentation, at the Lincoln City campus of Oregon Coast Community College, will explore how Lincoln County business owners can take steps to get more done in less time. It describes the six keys to building Dr. Alberto a better Flores business, and discusses “bullet-proof profit strategies” for crafting better operations, more effective marketing, improved customer service and increased sales. “Take this opportunity to step out of your business, and learn how to work ‘on’ your business, not just ‘in’ your business,” Flores said. “You will walk away with concrete ideas on how to increase your business’ profits, make your team more efficient and get a grip on time management. You will leave this practical seminar with a clearer direction and new tools to achieve your goals faster.” “Six Steps to a Better Business” will run from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, 3788 SE High School Drive. To register, call 541994-4166 or go to oregoncoastbusiness.com.

SCHOOL’S IN FOR SUMMER Whether it’s enjoying a fleeting celestial phenomenon, crafting a unique brew or creating artwork that lasts a lifetime, the new range of summer classes from Oregon Coast Community College has you covered. The classes begin on Thursday, July 6, with the first session of “Plein Air Painting: Beginning Landscape,” taught by Lincoln City artist Katia Kyte. Students will learn about value, color and techniques, how to capture light effects and simplify objects. Running from 10 am to 1 pm every Thursday in July, this all-levels class will also cover canvas, oil mediums and how to paint with a palette knife. The class will take place at the college’s Lincoln City campus. Tuition is $75 and registration is required. Students more interested in palates than palettes can try their hand at “Introduction to Home Brewing” from Joel Shields of Rogue Ales. Throughout the course of three classes, students will get first-hand experience watching the brewing and bottling process, not to mention tasting the final product. For the first time, this 21-and-over class will be brewing an all-grain batch — a dry-hopped pale ale. During the final class, the group will bottle condition some beer to take home and keg up some of the beer to be served at Rogue’s Dog Days of Summer Festival. Classes will take place at the college’s Newport campus, from 3 to 6 pm on Wednesday, July 12, and from 4 to 6 pm on Wednesday, July 19 and Aug. 9 Tuition is $40, plus a $20 materials fee payable to instructor at the start of first class. On Thursday, July 20, Sifan Kahale will present “Oh, Boy! The 2017 Eclipse,” exploring

Mussel beach Anyone interested in learning how to harvest and prepare fresh mussels should stay tuned for an outdoor class from Lincoln City’s own Paul Robertson. On a field trip starting at the NW 15th Street beach access, Robertson will share a simple recipe that’s sure to please. He’ll even prepare a batch, right there on the beach, for students to try. Tuition for the class will be $10, with the date yet to be determined.

the science and the splendor of this once-in-a-lifetime celestial event, along with tips about how to watch it safely.

Suitable for all ages, the class will take place at the Lincoln City campus, running from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Tuition is $15

but free for kids under 17. Kahale’s class won’t look at the potential disruptions from the expected influx of eclipse visitors. For that, people will need to sign up for “Disaster Preparedness for the Pacific Northwest,” a two-night class taught by North Lincoln Fire and Rescue District Captain Jim Kusz. In addition to potential eclipse problems, the class will

cover storms, power outages and the looming threat of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Kusz uses humor and a superb level of preparedness training to walk participants through the simple steps they can take to be prepared. Held at the Lincoln City campus, the free class will run from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 8 and 10.

“B

e brutal, you’ve got to be brutal.” That was the hub’s and my mantra as I disappeared into our garage for the cleaning I’d threatened for years. We agreed, we would not be soft and keep every little thing just because it held fond memories or for whatever reason we keep things. We would be brutal. Seventeen years ago, movers unloaded the bins holding much of our lives — things we’d carried with us through five states and now the Oregon Coast. And I swear, all these years later, some of it is there still waiting to be unpacked. We have a three-car garage and I haven’t seen the bare walls of one bay since we arrived. Instead, storage bins sit stacked four and five deep. Some from the original move; some from when we added on to the house and moved various bits and pieces into the garage. Just temporarily, I said. Ten years later, I was still looking for things that had disappeared. So last weekend off I went into the garage determined to jettison everything we didn’t absolutely need or love. I also had hopes of finding a few things that had gone missing. One was a set of photos taken 15 or so years ago with my family at a restaurant back east. It was one of the last gatherings in which my father still had a reasonable quality of life. After dinner, my sister, my nieces and I posed in our chairs mimicking a shot we’d lined up for in the ‘80s. Those pictures had disappeared, and the garage was my last hope. The first bin I opened was all the hub’s stuff. “Hey,” I called. “You’ve got to go through this yourself. I have no idea what you need or don’t” “OK,” he called back from the yard where he was doing something no doubt important. “Set it aside, I’ll take a look.” I opened the next bin. It was loaded with photos — most, dupes of shots already in photo albums. Still, soon I found myself loading them into the basket designated for the very few things I couldn’t part with. And soon, the basket was overflowing. Brutal, I reminded myself. I dumped them in the garbage

the Rocky Mountain News and The Oregonian, along with magazine clips filed neatly in three ring binders. I started to flip through them. ‘Oh, I can’t part with this one,’ I found myself thinking repeatedly as I came face to face with the old tales. Then I paused, took a breath and into recycling bin they went. So did the stacks of greeting cards, the odd mementos and cheap memorabilia, first aid splints and braces, a splintered childhood jewelry box, boxes of VCR tapes. When I came to the collection of rejection slips that started with my first rejection in 1976, my resolve weakened. Gulp. Did I really want to do that? I did. Soon, I reached the bin marked “bad poetry and early clips.” Who on ´arth keeps poetry already acknowledged as “bad.” Did I think it was going to improve with age? What I didn’t toss, I put in the pile for the upcoming garage sale: CDs, the rock polisher (used once), vintage cookware, flannel sheets (as any woman of a certain age will tell you, flannel sheets are their own fuzzy hell), a beer stein from Munich, glass bottles. I was brutal — but only as long as I kept moving. Digging into the hub’s ski bin, I pulled out a pair of thermal long johns, “No way, you can wear these anymore,” I said. “Sure I can,” he said. “I have a pair I wear all the time during storm season.” “And you don’t need two ski helmets,” I said, putting the long johns back in the bin. “I do. One is for cold weather; one is for spring skiing.” I picked up a dusty box of tool bits. “Don’t touch those,” he said. “I use them all the time.” I called it a day four hours after I’d started. By then I’d emptied 12 bins, and promised myself I’d return the next weekend to tackle at least a dozen more. Meanwhile, the hub’s box sits where I left it, awaiting his efforts to be (ahem) brutal.

and kept sorting. An hour into the endeavor, I was down to the last packs of photos. And there they were, the family

gathering. After that, I grew braver. I opened the bin containing countless clips from

Join the sift response crew Tiny pieces of plastic can add up to a big problem for marine life. But likewise, many hands make light work when it comes to removing these microplastics from the beach. That’s why organizers of the Annual Neahkhanie Beach Cleanup are hoping for a big turnout when they take to the sands this weekend. Starting on Saturday, June 24, and

running through Tuesday, June 27, volunteers will work their way along the high tide line, sifting sand and debris. Teens and adults are invited to come along and help with collecting debris, running materials, set-up and take down, and food service. Volunteers should bring a water bottle, snacks and dress for coastal

weather. Gloves and equipment will be provided. Shifts begin at 10 am and 1:15 pm, with orientations at the start of each shift on the beach at the end of Laneda Avenue in Manzanita. To sign-up in advance, email Kate Eskew at microplasticfreekate@ gmail.com or simply drop by during the event for a shift or the whole day.

Time to pool resources The tide pools at Otter Rock Marine Reserve just south of Depoe Bay will be the scene of a Saturday June 24, Bioblitz, where citizen scientists will get to work alongside experts to catalog local species. “Understanding our natural world takes the observations of many,” said event organizer Ian Throckmorton, “and the Bioblitz is a fun new way to target a small area, such as the tide pools at Otter Rock, with many eyes and observations in a short period of time.” Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside naturalists and scientists to photograph and identify plants and animals within the tide pools and

upload them to a species inventory on an interactive website. The project is organized using iNaturalist software, a smartphone application that maps and catalogs participating citizens’ and scientists’ observations. Participants with smartphones can download the iNaturalist application from www.iNaturalist.org. The event will run from 7 to 11 am, with participants asked to meet next to the restrooms at Devil’s Punchbowl State Park. Participants should come prepared with sturdy shoes and dressed for coastal weather. For more information, contact Ian Throckmorton at throckmi@gmail.com.

Summer fun at Spring Lake The Audubon Society of Lincoln City birders will mark the start of summer with a free guided field trip to Spring Lake Open Space this Friday, June 23, presenting the perfect outing for families with children. The group will be expecting to see and hear year-round woodland residents such as Pacific wren, great blue heron, belted kingfisher and red-tailed hawk, as well as summer visitors such as Swainson’s thrush, Wilson’s and orangecrowned warblers and osprey. This time of year, recent arrivals will be competing,

courting and forming new families, making it the perfect time to experience bird song and bird behavior as well catching a glimpse of the birds. No prior birding experience is required and binoculars and guidebooks can be provided. The group will set off from the parking area on NE Port Avenue at 9 am. From Highway 101, turn east on to NE 14th Street and then left on Port. For more information, call 5419929720. For a full list of upcoming field

Fish will be on the agenda while barbecue is on the menu this Tuesday, June 27, at a Science on the Grill event in Garibaldi. Hosted by the Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, the event will offer free food and the chance to chat about marine research from noon to 3 pm at the Garibaldi dock. Biologists from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will be on hand to answer questions about the science currently happening in the reserve and how to get involved. ODFW is responsible for managing and

scientifically monitoring the state’s five marine reserve sites, of which Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, just off the coast of Oswald West State Park between Manzanita and Arch Cape, is the newest. Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve partners with ODFW to help create awareness and understanding of local oceans and protections. Kids in grades 1 through 12 are encouraged to audition for roles in “Treasure Island,” the upcoming production from Missoula Children’s Theatre at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. This all-singing, alldancing adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of pirates, gold and life on the high seas will grace the cultural center stage on Saturday, July 1 — the culmination of a weeklong theater workshop offered free to all local kids. Auditions will begin at 10 am sharp on Monday, June 26, at the cultural center, located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. Those auditioning should arrive by 9:45 am, and plan to stay until noon. Some of the older cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition. The rest will be asked to report for rehearsals on Tuesday, June 27, and throughout the week. Among the roles to be cast are Jim Hawkins, his mother and six sisters, a rollicking Pirate Crew, Jim’s Ruffian friends, seacoast Villagers and cuddly Gulls. No advance preparation is necessary. Assistant directors will also be cast to aid in rehearsals throughout the week and to take on essential backstage responsibilities. Thanks to support from the Sponenburgh Memorial Trust, the Walter R. Behrens Foundation, the Studio to Schools Project and the Lloyd & Marlene Ankeny

urchins

Foundation, the program is offered free for all children who attend school or are homeschooled in Depoe Bay, Gleneden Beach, Lincoln City, Otis and Neskowin. Other aspiring performers are welcome to participate for a $50 registration fee, which covers all rehearsal and performances. “Treasure Island” will be performed twice, at 3 and 7 pm Saturday, July 1, on the cultural center stage. “Gourmet Food beyond all expectations! My wife and I were there on lamb special night. We both ordered lamb dishes, and we were utterly blown away at the how good the dishes tasted. The sauce, potatoes, vegetables, and lamb blended to make perfect dishes. The wine selection complimented the food perfectly. The cook would be a hit in any big city world class gourmet establishment.”

EAR WE ARE Plot a course for Pixiefest, in Lincoln City Story by Gretchen Ammerman For the TODAY

I

f you recently found yourself stuck behind people buying boat seats at Bi-Mart to put on a whale or seat belts to strap in floating mermaids, you just might have been in line with the team that built the Pixiefest float for Portland’s Rose Parade. The nodto-the-nautical entry was created to promote the inaugural event, which takes place this Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City. After wetting their chops on the float, which reconstructed part of a ride from the short-lived but historically enduring Pixie Land amusement park, the team are now going full steam ahead to recreate that part of Oregon Coast history, along with its more successful predecessor, Pixie

Kitchen. “We’re trying to make this as much like the original pixie experience as is humanly possible,” said Allyson Longueira, member of Kiwanis Club of Lincoln City, who are sponsoring the event. “We’ve been doing a lot of research, including talking to the Parks family who will be coming to the event for a mini family reunion.” Jerry Parks opened Pixie Kitchen in 1953 and he and a group of investors went on to parlay its popularity into the Pixie Land amusement park in 1969. “When we talked to people about their memories of Pixie Land the two rides that came up most often were the log ride and the train,” Longueira said. “We couldn’t realistically recreate a temporary log ride on the Chinook Winds Casino grounds, but we will have a train.” The event will be held in the ocean-front lot adjacent to the casino. “We will have also have

mechanical swings, tubs of fun (also called tea-cup rides) and a bouncy carousel,” Longueira said. “There will also be carnival games with prizes. This is really geared toward families with kids, since there’s not a whole lot to do with kids here. Kiwanis is all about supporting kids — 100 percent of the funds we raise go to help them. We wanted this to be an event that will be fun for kids, but also for adults who experienced either Pixie Kitchen or Pixie Land to share their experiences; hopefully with each other.” A perfect place for swapping stories will be Pixiefest’s recreation of the lounge that was housed within Pixie Kitchen, the Shell Room. Beer and wine will be served, and a specially made neon sign of the original logo will be prominently displayed then auctioned off at the close of the

If you go WHEN: Pixiefest will be held from 11 am to 7 pm on Saturday and noon to 5 pm on Sunday. HOW MUCH: Advance tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids aged 6 to 11, rising to $25 and $12 on the day. Admission is free for kids 5 and under. Family packages are available, giving $10 off two adult and two child tickets. FOR MORE INFORMATION: pixiefest.com. event. You can also soak up stories in the Pixie Memories tent, sponsored by Charlotte Lehto Insurance, which will include videos of people sharing their experiences with either the restaurant or amusement park, including members of the Parks family. Some of the things at Pixiefest that might trigger memories include the funhouse mirrors that were on display at Pixie Pitchen, or the cut-outs and two original boat ride seats shaped like whales that were at the park and which inspired the Rose Festival float. “We’ve got lots of great photo ops,” Longueira said. “Visitors can even take pictures with live mermaids, including a fortune telling mermaid, and there will be live pixies roaming around. It will be a way for people to literally interact with pixies.” The costumes were made by Elaine Pruett, who has worked with Disney on Ice. “Elaine’s husband came to Pixie Kitchen as a child,” Longueira said. “This has been a huge labor of love for her.” Live music will be rocking the grounds both days of the event, beginning Saturday with the Zapata Brothers. “They are very entertaining,” said Marilyn Salci, who was in charge of organizing the musical entertainment. “Their music is

very upbeat and fun. We will also have Perry Gerber who used to be with the Ocean playing rock and roll, and Brady Goss, who’s been at the cultural center. He’s one of the most amazing musicians I know; his role model is Jerry Lee Lewis. I’m really excited about the quality of the lineup.” More live entertainment will be provided by Theatre West, in a recreation of the Pixie Land Boo! Hiss! Theater Melodrama Show. During the classic evil-villainand-helpless-maiden-scenario show, the audience is encouraged to make noise in reaction to the action on stage, something generally frowned upon in a regular theater setting. “The entry price gets you unlimited rides, five game tickets, all of the photo ops and all of the live entertainment,” Longueira said. “Food, beverages and anything from the crafts vendors are the only thing not included.” One of the food vendors, My Petite Sweet, will help set the pixie mood with the original Fisher scones from the Pixie Kitchen recipe. “Jerry Parks was a pioneer,” said Ed Dreistadt of the Lincoln City Visitor & Convention Bureau. “He was the first one to create the model that became places like Chuck E. Cheese and McDonald’s PlayPlace. If our event recreates even a fraction of his magic, it will be a success.”

Art in the spotlight The latest Spotlight Show from Newport’s Yaquina Art Association Gallery will showcase works by a trio of local artists. On the West Spotlight Wall is Charlotte Carter, a retiree graphic artist and long-time Oregon Coast resident who now teaches the ongoing Pastel Class at the Newport Visual Arts Center. The East Spotlight Wall will showcase the work of Jane Hodgkins, including a variety of prints made using different techniques, ranging from linoleum block prints and dry point etchings to silkscreens, nature prints and ecodyed nature prints. Just in time for Fourth of July, she will also have some flags made from agates and beaver-chewed driftwood. The Artisan Spotlight Pedestals will feature the work of Susan Hatfield, who has a love for mosaics, mostly in the shapes of a variety of animals. Her work gives her the chance to enjoy the outdoors, collecting rocks and found objects for her art. The show will be on display through June 30, available to view from 11 am to 5 pm daily at the gallery, 789 NW Beach Drive.

SEE THE LIGHT, AT SAILSTICE Free sailing trips will be on offer this Saturday, June 24, in Newport as the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club celebrates SAILstice — a day aimed at promoting the fun that comes with messing about on boats. Registration begins at 11:30 am, with sailing trips scheduled each hour from noon to 4 pm, weather permitting. Children over five years old are welcome as long as they are wearing a well-fitting Coast Guardapproved life jacket. Guests at the event will also be able to learn about the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club and Oregon Boating Foundation. In the evening, the

clubhouse will come alive with the sounds of Portland blues star Lloyd Jones at an evening dance party fundraiser for local youth sailing programs. Doors for the 21-andover party will open at 5 pm, with music starting at 6 pm. Beer, wine and food will be available along with great raffle prizes and an auction. The party is beach-themed so bring your Hawaiian shirt. Tickets $12 in advance or $15 on the day, are available at Bier 1, 424 SW Coast Highway, or by calling 541547-3483. The Yaquina Bay Yacht Club is located at 750 SE Bay Blvd.

Click into place, in Netarts Friends of Netarts Bay will host a free class for landscape and nature photographers this Sunday, June 25. From 9 am to 2 pm, professional photographer and marine scientist Jim Young will cover the basics of photography and give students the chance to practice new skills while

traveling along Netarts Bay. Participants need to have their own cameras and should be familiar with transferring photos from the camera to a computer. Donations will be accepted. For more information, contact jimyoung4990@ gmail.com or call 503-8422153.

THE X FACTOR There is never any shortage of excitement when the big kites take to the air at Lincoln City’s D River Wayside. But this weekend’s Summer Kite Festival will also bring its share of X-kitement — a name chosen from the slim pickings of monikers that begin with the letter X. Each year’s festival is named via a public contest, with entrants working their way through the alphabet — from Veterans in 2015 through last year’s Windstock to this weekend’s X-kiting affair. The weekend festival will include kite-flying demonstrations by experts, free kids kite-making and vendors all against the backdrop of some of the most colorful show kites in the world. And if the wind should drop, organizers will be ready with the running of the bols — a foot race across the sand

in which every participant must drag a large, parachutelike kite behind them. Meanwhile, kids will be able to win great prizes by filling up their festival passports with autographs from the featured fliers. The festival runs from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at the D-River Wayside. A shuttle service is available at the Lincoln City Community Center and Lincoln City Outlets, running a continuous loop from 10 am to 4 pm both days.

Schedule 10 am-12:30 pm: Performance by featured fliers 10 am-2 pm: Free kids’ kite-making workshop. 1-4 pm: Performance by featured fliers 2-2:30 pm: Kids and kites parade on the beach

The cream of the crop Tillamook’s Dairy Parade and Festival will celebrate “60 Years on the MOOVE” this weekend, with a rodeo, parade and kids’ activities adding up to a packed couple of days. The weekend action starts at 3 pm on Friday, June 23, at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds, when gates open for the Tillamook County Rodeo, billed as “The Biggest Little Show on the Coast.” For just $10 for adults and $5 for kids, guests can treat themselves to an evening of bareback riding, barrel racing and more, with rodeo activities starting at 6 pm. The next morning, Saturday, June 24, early risers can get their endorphins pumping at the YMCA Milk

Run, which kicks off at 8 am, giving racers plenty of time to be done in time for the main event — the downtown Dairy Parade. Regarded as the thirdlargest in the state, the parade

starts at 11 am from the high school and heads along Main Street to Third, where it will make a right and head east to its conclusion at Goodspeed Park. As the parade wraps up, the Chamber will be hosting a Dairy Festival downtown; breaking in the new 2nd Street Plaza and filling the surrounding streets and parking lots with live music, a community barbecue, a car show, children’s activities, bouncy houses and more. In what is undoubtedly welcome news for young savers, the popular Penny Scramble will also be returning this year. At 3 pm, gates will open at the fairgrounds for kids’ day at the rodeo, with stick

pony races on offer and free admission for kids 12 and under accompanied by an adult. Rodeo action will

Be a guest of the fest The Siletz Bay Music Festival kicks into high gear this week, with performances from acclaimed rock violinist Aaron Meyer and piano legend Dick Hyman. On Saturday, June 24, Meyer will take to the stage at the Lincoln City Cultural Center for “Rockin’ the Festival,” an evening of rock violin with accompaniment from Jean-Pierre Garau on piano and Carl Smith on percussion. Meyer was an original member of world-renowned band Pink Martini, recording on the group’s debut album “Sympathique,” which sold a million copies worldwide. He went on to refine his own brand of music, with a repertoire including everything from Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” to his exquisite versions of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and the Beatles classic “Let it Be.” “Rockin’ the Festival” will start at 7:30 pm in the auditorium of the cultural center at 540 NE Hwy. 101. Tickets are $25. On Tuesday, June 27, the action will shift to Salishan Spa & Golf Resort for a “Sextet in the City,” featuring works by 19th-Century Russian composer Mikhail Glinka and contemporary American composer Ching-chu Hu. The concert will begin with Hu’s 2013 “Spheres of Influence” played by Genevieve Smelser and Michael Siess on violin, Valentina Shohdy and Miriam English Ward on viola and Katherine Schultz and Armen Ksajikian on cello. Smelser, Ward and Ksajikian will stay on stage for the second piece, Glinka’s 1832 “Grand Sextet,” joined by Denise Dillenbeck on violin, Jack Koncel on bass and Gerald Robbins on piano. The show will start at 7:30 pm at Salishan, eight miles south of Lincoln City. Tickets are $35. And veteran pianist Dick Hyman will be in the spotlight on Wednesday, June 28, as the festival presents “Contrasts” at Salishan Spa & Golf Resort. The concert will begin with a performance of “Quartet for the End of Time,” a quartet in eight movements for clarinet, violin, cello and piano by French composer Olivier Messiaen.

Dick Hyman

Later, audiences will be treated to a world premiere of Hyman’s “In Hot Pursuit,” a piece the nonagenarian performer prepared specially for the summer festival. “Contrasts” will start at 7:30 pm, with tickets $35. For a full list of concerts, or to buy tickets, go to www.siletzbaymusic.org or call 541-992-1131.

Sax, a little south of the city The INHOUSE Jazz series of house concerts will continue this Sunday, June 25, with an appearance by Portland alto saxophonist Warren Rand at a home in Ona Beach, just south of Newport. Hosted by vocalist Annie Averre, the concert will also feature bassist Tim Gilson and drummer Dave Averre, playing a mixture of familiar jazz and Latin classics, and favorite selections from their own recordings. A northwest native, Rand first studied saxophone after high school with Sonny King, Rich Halley and Jim Pepper. Later his mentors include Marc Copeland, Lee Konitz and Gary Peacock. He has performed extensively with regional and national musicians, including James Knapp, Jay Thomas and more. Gilson has been a mainstay in the Northwest for many years. In 1985 he joined the Mel Brown Quintet and played alongside many nationally acclaimed artists including Mose Allison, Ritchie Cole and Herb Ellis. In 1988, Gilson won second place in an international bass competition in Los Angeles and shortly thereafter substituted for John Clayton with ‘Slide Hampton and the New Jazz Masters’ in a concert in Sacramento. Since returning to Portland in 2002, Gilson plays regularly with the Oregon Symphony, backing guest artists such as Dee Daniels, Byron Stripling and Herbie Hancock. Dave Averre is an accomplished jazz drummer whose career spans more than three decades. After college, he moved to New York City and began making inroads into the jazz scene, doing performances and studio work on the east coast in upstate New York and Connecticut. In 1996, Averre moved to the Northwest where he performs and teaches in the Portland Metro area. In 2010, he was inducted into the Oregon Jazz Society Hall of Fame with the long-standing group Tall Jazz. Sunday’s concert will run from 2:30 to 5:30 pm. Admission is by suggested donation of $15 to $30, with all profits donated in support of local music education. For reservations and directions, call 360-606-7136 or email aaverre@hotmail.com. SCALES OF THE CENTURIES The Oregon Coast Recorder Society will gallop through the centuries this Sunday, June 25, with an eclectic performance at the Newport Visual Arts Center. The program will include “Se Je Chant,” a 14th-Century French canon extolling the joy of hunting with falcons; Josquin Desprez’s 15th-

Century pop tune “Mille Regretz;” a fantasy by 16thCentury English composer Orlando Gibbons; and pieces by his 17th-Century compatriot William Brade, the man sometimes credited with inventing the orchestral suite. The group will also perform an Italian piece with

recorders and krummhorns; a contemporary Canadian piece with gemshorns, a transcription of RimskyKorsakov’s famed “Dance of the Tumblers,” a couple of Argentine dances and a singa-long with an old Quaker hymn. After the concert, guests will get the chance to talk

with players and take a closer look at the instruments, from the humble recorders to krummhorns, gemshorns and more. The free concert will start at 3 pm at 777 NW Beach Drive. Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 541-961-1228 or go to www. coastrecorder.org.

The fox and the sound A host of coastal performers will take to the stage this Saturday, June 24, for the Fox Creek Music Revue, an evening of entertainment to benefit renovations to the Newport Performing Arts Center. Hosted by local jazz ensemble Perpetua, the event will feature performances by Ian Smith, Jim Kuoni, Ron Green, Richard Sharpless and Lozelle Jennings and the Purple Cats, along with some special guests. Perpetua is made up of guitarist Bill Hartsell, bassist Steve Cook, drummer Joshua Carson and percussionist Randy Madnick. Guest performers for this revue include Mario Flores on congas, Mike Horsfall on piano and vibes, Ron Green on trumpet and Neal Staufenbiel on saxophone. A guitarist and songwriter from Yachats, Ian Smith performs music filled with beautiful melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Kuoni and Green have joined together as a duo to perform their take on timeless Americana classics. Richard Sharpless is an incredible storyteller who forges connections through lyrics that draw upon his life experiences. He will be performing alongside Portland bassist Craig Snazelle. Lozelle Jennings of The Purple Cats has taken elements from many different genres to develop his own style, which he calls “SwampyTonk.” His band includes guitarist Jim Hobbs, bassist Steve Cook and drummer Curtis Colt. Jennings has also invited special guests June and Joren Rushing, Robin Remaily, Neal Staufenbiel and Richard Silen to join him on stage. The show will begin at 7 pm at 777 W Olive Street. Tickets, $20 advance or $24 at the door, are available by calling 541-265-2787 or online at www. coastarts.org. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Entertain the Future! capital campaign to expand and enhance the center.

A silvertongued duo Americana duo Silver Lake 66 will bring their soulful sound to Manzanita this Saturday, June 24, with a concert at the Hoffman Center for the Arts. Based in Portland, the pairing of Maria Francis and Jeff Overbo combines tight harmonies, strong duets and sharp guitar work steeped in classic country, rock and blues. Last year, the duo released their debut album, “Let Go or Be Dragged,” to critical acclaim, featuring a collection of songs drawn from personal experiences of travel, love, loss and adversity. Originally from the Midwest, the couple began playing and writing music together during their time in Minneapolis. After several years of recording, touring and playing locally, they packed up the van, guitars and their trusty dog Bernie, and headed to Southern

California. While living in LA for nearly a decade, their band The Ruby Trees performed locally in Los Angeles clubs, including appearances at Ronnie Mack’s Barn Dance and the world-famous Palomino Club. The next chapter for the duo was a move to Portland, where they honed their Pacific Northwest sound with jam sessions and performances at The Barn, an under-the-radar, honky-tonk on the edge of town. Silver Lake 66 performs regularly in Portland, and throughout the Pacific Northwest, both as duo and with their trusty rhythm section; sometimes rounding out their sound with pedal steel and Hammond organ. Saturday’s concert will start at 7 pm at 594 Laneda Avenue, with tickets $10 at the door.
