YACHATS — The Yachats Celtic Music Festival is the reel deal. But the action does not end with reels. Jigs, jams and jaunty jumbling of musical styles are also on the agenda for this three-day extravaganza. Beer and whiskey tastings will help reluctant jiggers ďŹ nd their rhythm. See page 16

BACK, BACK ON THE RANGE

Winters to chill

Manzanita Cat Winters will visit Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts on Saturday, Nov. 19, to lead a workshop on how to craft a scary story and read from her new novel, “Yesternight.” Winters’ second adult novel, “Yesternight” is set in 1925 in the “rain-soaked coastal hamlet of Gordon Bay, Oregon.” The novel involves reincarnation and madness as well as issues of a professional woman stifled by the conventions of her time. Winters is an awardwinning, critically acclaimed author of fiction that blends history with the supernatural. In addition to her adult novels, “The Uninvited” and “Yesternight,” she has written young adult works including “In the Shadow of Blackbirds,” “The Cure for Dreaming,” “The Steep and Thorny Way” and the forthcoming “Odd & True.” She has been named a Morris Award finalist, a Bram Stoker Award nominee and an Oregon Spirit Book Award

winner. From 1 to 3:30 pm Winters will lead workshop entitled “Writing Scary,” aimed at showing students how to write a chilling scene. Through lectures, group discussions and a variety of exercises, Winters will share her favorite tools for producing writing that is evocative and spooky. Tuition is $30 and registration is available at hoffmanblog.org. Winters’ reading will begin at 7 pm and will be followed by a Q&A and an open mic on the suggested theme “It Was a Dark & Stormy Night.” Admission for the evening reading is $7. The Hoffman Center for the Arts is located at 594 Laneda Avenue. Both events are part of the second annual Dark and Stormy Night - Mystery Weekend in Manzanita, in collaboration with the North Tillamook Library. For more information, email kathiejhightower@ gmail.com.

Author Nick Neely will return to the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on Wednesday, Nov. 16, to read from his new book, “Coast Range,” a collection of essays focusing on the interactions between humans and the natural world within the California and Oregon coastal ranges. In 2015, Neely spent three and a half months as a writer-in-residence at the Sitka center, located in a secluded setting just north of Lincoln City. His work is published in journals such as Kenyon Review, The Threepenny Review, The Georgia Review, Audubon, Orion and High Country News. He holds master’s degrees in poetry and nonfiction from Columbia University and Hunter College. He is the recipient of a PEN Northwest Boyden Wilderness Writing Residency, a UC-Berkeley Food and Farming Journalism Fellowship and the 2015 John Burroughs

Nature Essay Award. He lives in Hailey, Idaho with his wife, the painter Sarah Bird. Neely’s presentation, which is free and open to all, will begin at 6 pm in Boyden Studio. Light refreshments will be provided. To get to the Sitka center, take Three Rocks Road from Highway 101 just north of Lincoln City and follow the signs. For more information, go to www.sitkacenter.org.

SEND MACK TO THE ROCK Efforts to send an Oregon Coast Native American leader to join the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline will receive a boost from a fund-raising concert and bake sale this Saturday, Nov. 12, in Newport. Tribal elder, spiritual leader and well-known author Dorothy Blackcrow Mack from Lincoln City plans to offer support and inspiration to the Standing Rock Sioux Nation at their winter encampment in North Dakota. In doing so, Mack, a member of the Lakota

Nation, will join the thousands of Native Americans from some 250 tribes who have gathered at the massive encampment. Saturday’s fund-raiser will feature multicultural, traditional and indigenous rhythms from the Thunder & Lightness Ensemble, with Osage Nation member Terry Filer on the Native American flutes, along with Chandler Davis and Skip Floraday on the drums. Mack will discuss her planned journey and offer Lakota stories, songs and drumming. Davis, who is

the leader of the Newport Community Drum Circle, will bring the evening to

a close with an all-ages participatory drumming segment. There will also be baked goods for sale and a silent auction. The fund-raiser will run from 6 to 8:30 pm, at Ocean Unity Church, 834 SW Lee Street. The event is open to all, with a suggested donation of $10. For more information, contact Marion Warfield, at maemoon13@hotmail. com or 347-522-7679, or Chandler Davis, at chandler@ chandlerdavis.com or 541272-4615.

Rock n’ roll hits from the ’60 and ’70s will provide the backdrop for an evening of fund-raising in Lincoln City this Saturday, Nov. 12, as Neighbors For Kids presents its Fall Music Fest 4, “Back to the Beach with NFK.” Popular local band The Ocean will provide the music while guests enjoy delicious appetizers from the Side Door Café. Guests can also get in the running for silent auction items and raffle prizes while enjoying wine and beer from a no-host bar. This event has grown to be one of NFK’s largest

fund-raisers of the year, with proceeds supporting the many enrichment programs offered during the Kids Zone After School Program and Summer Camp. The event will run from 7 to 11 pm at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, 540 NE Hwy. 101, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Advance tickets are $20, rising to $25 at the door. For more information about making a donation or becoming a sponsor, or to purchase tickets, go to www. neighborsforkids.org or call 541-765-8990.

Lincoln City’s Relay For Life will celebrate a new life of its own this year, with the event shifting to the Lincoln City Outlets for an evening of fun and fundraising on Friday, Nov. 18. The family event, which had previously run throughout the night on the Taft High track, has been totally redesigned to kick off the season of giving on the Friday before Thanksgiving. From 5 to 11 pm, Relay participants will celebrate cancer survivors, raise funds to fund the fight against cancer, and provide hope for those who are battling the disease. Participants will raise money by walking laps of the mall, with hot chocolate and warm beverages on hand to keep everyone warm, along with purple ponchos to guard against rain. Throughout the evening, raffles and theme laps will keep spirits high as teams compete to see who can raise the most for cancer research. The Survivor Lap starts at 5:15 pm, just after the opening ceremonies and, at 9:30 pm, a line of glowing luminaria lanterns will encircle the mall for a moving tribute to those who have experienced cancer. Sign up at www. lincolncityrelay.org.

A contest without mushroom for error Mushroom foragers can normally be found with their noses mere inches from the soil, but on Saturday, Nov. 12, fungus fans will find themselves elevated as the Wild Mushroom CookOff returns to the fourth floor of Lincoln City Hall. Now in its eighth year, the contest gathers together some of the coast’s most magnificent mushroom masters at the Culinary Center in Lincoln City, pairing phenomenal fungal fare

with spectacular ocean views. Admission is free and guests can sample each chef ’s creation for a dollar a time. A panel of judges will rank the top three entries while any guests that have the stomach to face yet another ballot box can cast their votes in the People’s Choice Award. Among the chefs hoping to take top honors is Greg Hill, from Lincoln City’s Deli 101. “I will be using chicken of the woods mushrooms in my

dish,” Hill said. “Right now, I am debating either a mushroom stew or a stuffed mushroom with bacon. My hope is that the flavor of the mushrooms will stand out in the competition.” Hill, who has previously won 3rd place at the Mushroom Cook-Off, said he enjoys the friendly nature of the contest and appreciates the boost it provides to local restaurants. “If I get 1st place, that would be awesome!” he said. “But honestly,

I am just happy to be there. The best part, for me at least, with these cook-offs is interacting with the patrons and other chefs.” The cook off, which also features live music as well as beer, wine and assorted sweet treats, runs from 11 am to 2 pm on the fourth floor at 801 SW Hwy. 101. For more information, call the Lincoln City Visitor & Convention Bureau at 800-4522151 or go to www.OregonCoast. org.

HOUSE PAR T Y

The house as a symbol for the self is at the heart of the latest exhibit at Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery, pairing the fused glass houses of Kate Saunders with poetry from husband Ger Killeen. The show, entitled “Little Houses,” opens this Friday, Dec. 11, with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm, offering complimentary refreshments and a talk from the artists at 6 pm. Saunders has been doing fused glass for many years — originally for use in mixed media sculpture — but it didn’t take long for glass to become her main focus. “I always like to say that I’ve wanted to fuse glass since the first time I saw a melted Coke bottle at a carnival when I was a kid,” she said, “but got waylaid by ceramics in college.” Using homes as a metaphor for the self, Saunders has used fused glass and textural mixed media to create small abodes symbolizing particular people or groups of people. Saunders’ houses will be paired with poems written by Killeen, some of which relate directly to the glass homes, while others relate to the artwork more obliquely. Killeen’s text-image style of poetry sees the text manipulated to produce a pictorial design that adds to the meaning of the piece. Sometimes the text is very easily readable, but at other times the words is warped and shaped, making the image the dominant visual element. “Arguably, people have been doing versions of this since the days of illuminated manuscripts in the Middle Ages,” Kileen said. “In my case I’ve added a new aspect which allows a reader or viewer with a smartphone or similar device to be taken ‘through’ the text and into a new dimension of sound and vision, which expands the meaning of the original text-image.” Audience members will be able to experience the multimedia versions of the poems by using their iPad or smartphone to scan web-connected

codes on the walls of the gallery. Originally from Limerick, Ireland, Killeen now teaches at Marylhurst University. He has won numerous awards and published five books of

poetry, including “A Wren.” “A Stone That Will Leap Over the Waves” and “Signs Following.” Killeen and Saunders make their home on the Oregon Coast.

Saunders has work on display in the Touchstone Gallery in Yachats and more examples can be seen online at www.lewiscreekglassworks.com. The exhibit will be on display

through Dec. 5, available to view from 10 am to 4 pm daily except Tuesdays. The Chessman Gallery is located inside the Lincoln City Cultural Center at 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, call 541-994-9994 or go to lincolncityculturalcenter.org.

on stage

By Barbara B. Covell For the TODAY

Photos by Chris Graamans This is how Porthole Players do their best work — intensely complex musicals with dynamic choreography and intimate glimpses into characterization. So it is with the company’s interpretation of “The Fantasticks.” The longest running musical in the world, “The Fantasticks” has been performed for 50 years on off-Broadway stages. Its storyline is reminiscent of timeless classics such as “Romeo and Juliet,” and Edmond Rostand’s “The Romantics,” and other archetypal tales of love, loss and hopeful redemption. But there might be more for audiences unfamiliar with Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s narrative on life’s unexpected twists and turns. The Porthole Players’ rendering of this production might bring the most devout thespian to their knees. Playing against a minimalist set in the black box studio theatre of the Newport Performing Arts Center, the actors fully work the stage to mere inches of the audience seating area. It is a highly charged approach, inviting patrons to become a part of the show. It works. The show is directed by a Newport theatrical mainstay, the mononymous Stephan, who hopes audiences will use their imaginations to fill in the blanks.

Luisa (the Girl) portrayed by Laura McCrum

“The show is generally done without a complicated set because the story is so simple,” he said, “it doesn’t need the trappings of a large space or background scenery.” Set in the piano lounge of a 1960s French bistro, the story lends itself to a healthy serving of imagination. A baby grand piano sits impressively on the set, providing all the musical accompaniment under the capable hands of Milo Graamans. The bistro’s lounge singer, El Gallo, is the show’s narrator. The Maitre d’ is cleverly cast as a mute, his liquid movements, facial expressions and miming skills keep the audience fully attentive to his actions. The Mute provides the actors with all their props and advances the storyline. The characters of Henry and Mortimer serve as the chef and waiter. “The Fantasticks” opens with El Gallo performing “Try to Remember,” a lovely ballad about first love in the days of September. It might be painfully reminiscent, but this is a story about the angst of young love. Then two fathers, Huckleebee and Bellomy, enter the bistro with their children, young Matt (the Boy) and 16 year old Luisa (the Girl). Matt has just graduated college and lives in fear of becoming “normal.” They sit at separate tables and it soon becomes apparent the fathers are not on speaking terms. In fact, they are feuding neighbors

El Gallo (Pete Theodore) makes plans with Henry (Gary Thompson)

and have constructed a Wall between their houses. Knowing their fathers would oppose their relationship, Matt and Luisa have been secretly meeting at the Wall to declare their love. Of course, the fathers are really good friends and have devised this plan to trick their children. They take it one step further by hiring El Gallo to stage an abduction of the Girl, complete with actors, a swordfight and a heroic outcome for the Boy. The feud is over and the Boy and Girl are free to marry. But, do they? Stephan has cast remarkably talented actors who sing, dance, battle and utilize the set with great skill. Assistant Director Vickie Steen’s choreography makes full use of the studio space, keeping audience members engaged and entertained. The vocals are tight and each actor is equipped with microphones to ensure continuity in sound levels. Graamans’ piano work skillfully

keeps the pace above par. There is no down time. Pete Theodore is the consummate El Gallo; handily transitioning from the suave lounge singer to a self-serving manipulator in order to advance the plot. Theodore’s stage work is so solid that it is fun to watch him. The Mute is played by newcomer Adrien Fraser whose background in dance rewards the audience with his seamless (and very funny) movements. Brian Haggerty portrays Matt’s father with perfect timing and polish, he is truly a veteran performer. Rhodd Caldwell, Luisa’s father, is a seasoned actor who makes his debut on the Newport stage. Haggerty and Caldwell have an exciting dynamic which will be enjoyable for audiences. This show is littered with funny dialogue and innuendos, such as Haggerty’s statement: “I learned horticulture when in the navy.” The characters Henry and

Mortimer provide comic relief. Both Gary Thompson and Cody Larsen carry this off with great panache. Larsen was last seen in “Avenue Q” where he demonstrated superb acting, singing and puppeteering. This is Thompson’s first stage appearance. He is a first-rate addition to this wonderful cast. Luisa (Laura McCrum) and Matt (Drake Simon) have lovely chemistry, conveying the innocence and passion of first love. They both will have good futures on the stage. Stephan and Steen chose to remain true to the script as it was written. The reference

to a “rape” is explained as an “abduction” prior to each show. The word had a different meaning when “The Fantasticks” debuted in 1960. There is no adult language, this is clearly a family show. “The Fantasticks” runs from November 11 through 27, with performances at 7:30 pm every Friday and Saturday, plus 2 pm matinées on Sundays, all at the Newport Performing Arts Center, 777 W Olive Street. Tickets, $16 in advance or $18 at the door, are available by calling 541-265ARTS or online at www.coastarts. org.

By Barbara B. Covell For the TODAY

This weekend, for the 16th year running, the picturesque coastal village of Yachats will transform into a scene worthy of Brigadoon, packed with music, dancing, food and festivities. The Yachats Celtic Music Festival, which started as a one-night celebration of Celtic heritage, quickly evolved into a three-day extravaganza, replete with acoustic instruments, Ceili and Morris dancing, jam sessions, beer and whiskey tastings, and 16 musical acts to entertain with traditional and blended sounds. And if all that isn’t enough to wet your whistle, guests can also play sleuth in a Celtic-themed, liveaction murder mystery weekend by Toledo author and wildlife photographer Ram Papish. The festival showcases the traditional music of the Celts, who settled in Ireland, Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, Galicia, Brittany and The Isle of Man, and whose musical styles evolved as they relocated. The traditional instruments of fiddle, pipes and tin whistle influenced many other genres of music, including American bluegrass. Today, Celtic music holds worldwide popularity among many cultures, integrating Celtic heritage into evolving musical styles. Produced by the non-profit Polly Plumb Productions and The Friends of the Commons, the Yachats Celtic Music Festival opens on Friday, Nov. 11, with a meet-and-greet opportunity

at the Yachats Commons from 4 to 6 pm. Music begins at 5:52 pm, sunset, with the Piper on the Point bagpipes at the Yachats State Recreation Area. This year’s Piper is David Brewer, an Oregonian of Scottish descent and a founding member of the renowned Celtic band, Molly’s Revenge. Friday night’s smorgasbord of musical entertainment includes

multiple bands in a variety of locations. The Drift Inn and Yachats Brewing & Farmstore feature live Celtic music during the evening hours. Catch Hammer and Whistles perform eclectic Celtic music on hammered dulcimer, low D whistle and penny whistle at 6 pm in the Commons lobby. The 7 pm concert at the Yachats Commons features Portland-based Biddy on the Bench, who deliver an energizing, exciting show. They are followed by The Fire, performing Scottish music with world-class fiddling, bagpipe, guitar, bodhrán and penny whistle. The headline band, Chessboxer, rounds out the night, performing a two-hour set with their boundary-pushing sounds combining fiddle, upright bass and banjo. Ross Holmes, Chessboxer’s

accomplished fiddler, has a lifetime connection with music. “I went to fiddle camp as a kid and was exposed to many genres of music,” he said. “I learned to incorporate multiple genres in order to get a specific sound, or a blend.” On Saturday, Nov. 12, the festival’s schedule is packed with music, workshops, food and a Celtic-themed murder mystery. Harpist Mary Grace performs from 8 to 9 am at Overleaf Lodge. A penny whistle workshop follows at 9 am in the Yachats Commons. At 10 am, Mary Grace returns with a Celtic Spirituality workshop in the Little Log Church, with The Fire returning at 11 am. A presentation on the violin with Lynn Berg starts at 1 pm, followed at 3 pm by Tim Birr, Francis O’Neill and Jenn

Sordyl. Saturday will also see two workshops on Morris dancing at the Yachats Commons, beginning at 10 am, followed by Biddy on the Bench at noon. Kimmy Smith’s spirited new band, Sassafras, performs at 1 pm, followed by an official reunion and return of Eugene’s Toad in the Hole at 2 pm. The Fire rounds out the afternoon at 3 pm on the Commons main stage. Saturday’s jam sessions begin 10 am in the Drift Inn, continuing at 3 pm at the 501 Building. The Drift Inn hosts a whiskey tasting beginning 3:15 pm, with live Celtic music resuming at 6:30 pm. For folks who can’t wait that long between jigs, the music will start at 5:30 pm at the Yachats Brewery & Farmstore. Ric Morrisonn’s Bodhrán workshop begins at 4 pm in the Little Log Church, followed by Eugene’s Doodad Shanty Boys, on stage at 5 pm. The Yachats Commons main stage is the location for the Saturday evening concerts featuring local Seal Rock performer Terry Trenholm playing Celtic punk on five instruments. He is followed by the Doodad Shanty Boys, Connla’s Well and Chessboxer, who will take to the stage at 9 pm. GOOD TIME

The Yachats Celtic Music Festival is going to be a real killer this year, branching out to include a live-action murder mystery, “The Voice from Bloody Water Well.” Sleuths of all ages are invited to join the Friday, Nov. 11, event, which will see local actors dress in costume and stage a murder while would-be detectives investigate ‘whodunnit.’ This mystery takes place in 1887. Ben O’Wandren, an Irish drifter, is found dead in Bloody Water Well. Was he pushed, poisoned or worse? Some claim it was a banshee that lured him to his doom. Others look for motives among the people of Yachats. It is up to Inspector I.C. Ital to figure it out. “The Voice from Bloody Water Well” is the 10th murder mystery written by Toledo author/artist Ram Papish. “I would compare the event to a live-action game of Clue, the classic board game,” Papish said, “Sleuths have a lot to figure out, but if they pay close attention to all of the clues and do a thorough job of interviewing the suspects, they should be able to solve it. It’s a challenging but fun event.” “Here’s a hint,” he added. “It wasn’t the candlestick.” Papish’s great uncle David Kogan wrote, produced and directed radio mysteries including “Murder by Experts” and “The Mysterious Traveler.” He wrote for the famous radio drama “The Shadow.”
