New Orleans Shrimp Appetizer 1 Tablespoon olive oil 20 uncooked shrimp, peeled and deveined 1 Tablespoon green onions, sliced 1/4 cup white wine 1 Tablespoon garlic, minced 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon paprika 2 Tablespoons butter
Directions In a large cast iron skillet over high heat, add oil and cook shrimp until just done, turning pink. Remove shrimp and set aside. (*If shrimp is precooked, wait and add shrimp at the end of the recipe.) Add green onions and cook 1 minute. Add wine and reduce by half. When reduced, add garlic, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, cayenne pepper and paprika. Cook 1 minute. Reduce heat to low. Add butter and melt. Add shrimp to pan; toss well to coat and heat through.

HATS OFF TO THIS DUO
Flock to Newport, for the Turkey Trot For some of us, Thanksgiving exercise extends about as far as stretching for the TV remote or digging deep for the energy required to fetch yet another helping of pumpkin pie. Not so for participants in Newport’s Arctic Circle Turkey Trot, which returns for its sixth year on Thursday, Nov. 23, to offer the chance to burn off a few of those holiday calories. Starting and finishing at Rogue Brewery in South Beach, the event features a 10k, a 5k and a Kids Fun Run, offering views of Yaquina Bay
and the Pacific Ocean. The kids’ run will start at 9 am, followed by the 5k and 10k runs at 9:15 am. Organizers encourage all participants to dress up in costume, with prizes on offer for the best efforts. Awards will be given for the overall male and female winner for each race as well as the top males and females aged over 40 and over 50 There will be ribbon awards for the top three finishers in a range of age divisions.
Advance registration is available through Wednesday, Nov. 22, priced at $8 for the kids’ run and $30 for 5k or 10k. Registration fees increase to $10 and $35 on the day. A portion of the proceeds from the run will go toward athletic programs at two local schools — Sam Case and Yaquina View Elementary. To register, go to www. ardoradventures.com. The Portland-based XX Digitus Duo will bring their multi-media, four-hand piano concert to the Oregon Coast on Saturday, Nov. 18, with a performance at the Lincoln City Cultural Center. The duo, whose name refers to the 20 fingers they put to work on the keys, will perform a concert entitled “Shades of Twenty,” featuring styles ranging from Latin American to alternative rock. The duo will also play Dag Gabrielson’s new musical score for the 1927 Dada film, “Ghosts Before Breakfast,” while the film runs on a screen behind them. Pianists Maria Garcia and Momoko Muramatsu have had successful individual careers that have taken them around the world to events like the Aspen, Tanglewood, Bergen and Casals festivals, and seen them work alongside performers like the Mark Morris Dance Group. Friends and colleagues since college years at the New England Conservatory, Garcia and Muramatsu
joined forces in 2014 to form the XX Digitus Duo and explore the four-hand piano repertoire. Together, they explore the classical standards but also the vast repertoire of their shared Latin American musical heritage. They are deeply committed to working with composers in creating new works for the medium, commissioning four works in the past two years from composers Ken Selden, Dag Gabrielsen and Charles Copeland. Their goal is to create exciting musical experiences that include classical, contemporary and rock audiences with an eclectic choice of repertoire while collaborating with other art forms such as film, visual arts, poetry and dance. The Nov. 18 concert will begin at 7 pm in the auditorium of the cultural center at 540 NE Hwy. 101. Make it yours, at CrafterHours A new series called CrafterHours will make its debut at Lincoln City’s Driftwood Public Library this Monday, Nov. 20, offering teens and adults the chance to create a festive holiday candle holder. The library will provide glass candle holders to
decorate. Or, participants can bring their own glass to decorate. This project works best with smooth glass. The CrafterHours program aims to give people a new way to bring a touch of the handcrafted to their gift-giving and decorating. The program will run on
the third Monday of the month, at 6:30 pm in the Community Room of the library, located on the second floor at 801 SW Hwy. 101. Because some projects involve sharp tools, hot glue and other potentially dangerous items, organizers

efine normal. In theater terms, achieving a normal production can be wickedly challenging. In the world of interpersonal family dynamics, normal is a place reserved for “other people.” In the iconic cartoon characters crafted by artist Charles Samuel Addams, normal was ghoulish, macabre and eerie; with a touch of charming, tender and adorable. The Addams Family came to life and captured the hearts of 1960s television audiences with their darkly twisted humor and bizarre, inverted lifestyle. Now the devilishly delightful family returns to life in a musical comedy created by “Jersey Boys” authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. And what a monstrously popular show it is. Three years ago, Newport director Kathy Heater saw “The Addams Family Musical” on the Broadway stage. “I knew immediately it was something for Porthole Players,” she said. “Of course, I contacted Sara Coxen right away.” Heater and Coxen are the powerhouse directors who brought “My Fair Lady,” “The Producers” and “Young Frankenstein” to the Newport stage. Coxen also choreographs all dance routines and movements of the 34-member cast. “She makes it look effortless,” Heater said. “She moves people beautifully. These are complicated scenes and Sara makes them move along in perfect rhythm.” Rights to “The Addams Family Musical” were made available to community theatre groups in 2017 and this is the first production on the Oregon Coast. Cast member ages range from 12 to their ’70s. “This cast is very large and talented, with junior, senior high students, and accomplished seasoned adult actors in rehearsal since July,” Heater said. The storyline follows the popular iconic characters as daughter Wednesday, now 18 and a college student, returns home with a surprise. She has fallen in love with young

Lucas Beineke, a Midwestern boy who brings his family to the Addams mansion. It is a night of mayhem, filled with Addams family — dead and undead. All the young lovers want is one “normal,” night with their families together. That’s not exactly what they get. Gomez and Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandma and Pugsley join Wednesday and Lucas in the bizarre events with Alice and Mal Beineke, Lucas’s parents, on the fateful evening where both families unite. At a special family dinner hosted by Gomez and Morticia, all the peculiar and outlandish traditions come to life, with the help of oddball ancestors and rampant human emotions. Portraying the patriarchal Gomez Addams is Justin Atkins, the jewel of Newport’s performance art community. Stacy Fischer is the elegant Morticia; her performance as Sally Bowles knocked out audiences in “Cabaret.” Both Atkins and Fischer are strong vocalists and possess great stage chemistry. Cody Larsen is the quirky Uncle Fester who communicates with the dead. Larsen is a Porthole Player veteran with terrific command of his physical stage presence and vocally pleasing. Powerhouse vocalist Cassie Lihou plays Wednesday Addams, in love with the “normal” Lucas Beineke, portrayed by Cooper Theodore. Linda Capshaw is hilarious as Grandma.
Keenan Williams delivers a spot-on Pugsley, and the talented Pete Theodore is a commanding Lurch. Megan Walters is Alice Beineke and Brian Haggerty is her husband, Mal Beineke. Walters and Haggerty are both gifted actors and a funny addition to the Addams Family unit. Sara Coxen says this production presented some challenges in blocking, due to the large cast and frequent changes in set. The black and white motif, envisioned and designed by Performing Arts Center mainstay Stephan reference the illustrations and stained glass craftsmanship of Harry Clarke, a turn of the century Irish artist. Stephan’s visions of the Addams Family mansion and grounds are masterful, transforming the stage to a gothic, ghostly, macabre world of shadows and ghoulish light. Special effects will delight audiences with stage illusions and magic tricks, courtesy of Ernie Brown, Ben Capshaw and Anthony Buchas. It is the music which presented the greatest test for this production team. “It is difficult music for the actors and the musicians,” Coxen said. At times vaudevillian, melodramatic, or Broadway show style, the music was written to accommodate each unique character’s

attributes. A 17-piece orchestra under the direction of Howard Lackey, with accompanist Milo Graamans and vocal director Brad Capshaw keep meticulous timing and flow throughout. fter 35 years of selling real estate in some of the most desirable cities in the US, Steve Lockwood is changing pace, relocating to the Oregon Coast to focus on real food. Located at Salishan Spa and Golf Resort, just south of Lincoln City, Lockwood’s Mangia Italian Deli offers Italian cuisine for the American palate, with almost every dish made entirely from scratch. “People want good food done well; and that’s what I offer here,” he said. “I try to elevate each dish — do something simple to fine tune it, to make it better than what you’ve had before.” “Our Caesar dressing is a good example,” he added. “We make it here with real lemon juice and quality parmesan and good olive oil and it makes a difference. People ask ‘why is this Caesar better than other Caesars I’ve had before?’ Because the ingredients are real.” Lockwood learned to cook as he worked his way through college and honed his culinary
skills during his career as a realtor, doing catering on the side for colleagues, clients and friends. “I was always told to open a restaurant,” he said. “Every time.” Lockwood was already familiar with Salishan, has family having owned a beach house at the resort for more than 40 years. The availability of a restaurant premises with high visibility from Highway 101 sealed the deal. With the location settled, there was just one question left to answer — what type of restaurant should it be? Lockwood said the answer came from longtime friend Brent Duering, owner of Big Mountain Coffee, which sits just a few miles south in Lincoln Beach. “Brent said there was a void to fill,” Lockwood said; “that he and his wife had to go into Portland to get Italian. Not anymore.” Mangia offers an everchanging menu for lunch and dinner, with dishes changing to reflect seasonal availability as well as customer feedback. Lunch favorites include an Italian sub sandwich packed with ham, salami, pepperoni, lettuce and tomato; and a meatball sandwich made using Lockwood’s own marinara sauce. At dinnertime, dishes

include locally sourced, house-made roast beef and, for diners seeking seafood, shrimp scampi with fresh shrimp sautéed a la minute in white wine and served up for a very reasonable $18. But the restaurant’s most eye-catching deal allows diners to enjoy Lockwood’s gourmet cuisine in the comfort of their own homes, with a dinner-for-two special for just $35. “People who just don’t want to cook, they drop in on the way home from work and dinner’s done,” Lockwood said. The deal includes two
pasta entrées, salad, bread and a bottle of wine from Lockwood’s hand-picked selection. That small but perfectly formed selection focuses on Oregon wines wherever possible, with two pinots, a merlot a rosé and several tiers of chardonnay. For guests celebrating a special occasion, Lockwood is always happy to break out his reserve collection. The craft beer selection also has a local focus, with offerings including brews from Pelican Brewing Company in Pacific City and Fort George Brewery in

Meanwhile, a mouthwatering selection of desserts awaits anyone who has room left after their meal, with a decadent chocolate cake sitting alongside Lockwood’s house-made delights including tiramisu, cheesecake and biscotti. “We go through them,” he said. “They taste as good as they look.” Underlying Lockwood’s restaurant philosophy is a commitment to giving the customer what they want — whether its extra garlic in a sauce or whipping up an offmenu dish to satisfy the kids. “When a kid comes in I
just ask ‘what do you want to eat?’” he said. “They just look at me with surprise.” “We really do care about our customers and we treat people like they are coming into our house,” he added. “That’s my biggest goal; you come in, have a nice meal and leave feeling better than you walked in. T
he abundance of natural beauty in Oregon attracts hardy folk who will hike in a hail storm for a single waterfall sighting. It seems one of the only things that will keep people from enjoying more of state’s natural attractions, regardless of the conditions, is not knowing how to find them. Luckily, a recently released guidebook, “25 Hikes on Oregon’s Tillamook Coast” is a new entry in the guidebook scene that can help you get to some of the best spots on this rugged part of the coast. Written by Adam Sawyer, a Portland-based guide and author of previous guidebooks including “Hiking Waterfalls in Oregon” and “Best Outdoor Adventures Near Portland,” the book also includes hikes that fall between Portland and the coast. “The number-one question they get at the Tillamook Visitor Center is where to go hiking in the area and there wasn’t any kind of guidebook for just that,” Sawyer said. “So we made one.” When I asked Sawyer to pick his favorite hike from the book, he said it really came down to being at the right place at right time. “My favorite spot is probably Gales Creek,” he said. “The day I went there was not another soul around and the weather
was perfect — it was magic.” Though “25 Hikes” is primarily a guidebook, Sawyer’s descriptions are filled with personal flavor and enough background information to make it a fun read as well. “One of the cool things about doing this project was that they gave me freedom,” he said. “Most guidebook publishers want you to stick to the facts, but don’t want you to inject personality.” Sawyer said he wrote the book using the kind of language he would use when talking to his friends. That’s how he ended up with descriptions like the one for Kings Mountain, which he calls a “2.5mile long hurt locker disguised as a hiking path.” With the easily packable guidebook in hand, I grabbed my trusty canine companion and tried out a few of the trails I wasn’t already familiar with and revisited a few I already knew. Following are four coast routes I chose for their diversity in difficulty, distance and terrain.
Neahkahnie Mountain I started this hike from the opposite end recommended in the book, which starts right at Highway 101 and climbs more than 1,000 feet in the first mile, bringing to mind Sawyer’s description of Kings Mountain. With the rapid ascent, the views of the coast and the forest, nestled within the Oswald West State Park, begin almost immediately. One
hiker I spoke to said that she used the trail as a way to help her get over her fear of heights. Though described as family-friendly, I would hesitate to take small children on this one, as there were sections of the first part of the trail that were washed out and bordered by steep drop-offs. My no-longer-young dog however, loved it, as the fast trip back down the mountain gave him a few opportunities to do flying leaps and act like a puppy again.
Nestucca Spit Even in the summer when the crowds are thick at Cape Kiwanda, the Nestucca Spit, located in Bob Straub Sate Park just to the south of Pacific City, is rarely crowded. You can choose to walk down the beach, accessible from one of a few trails that leave from the parking lot, or head east into a series of trails that meander through shore pines and sea grass and make up a five-mile loop if followed correctly. One of my dubious talents is that I am a great person to flush out if a trail is hard to follow, as if you can get lost, I will. Though the trail was well marked, I did once manage get lost here, not a big concern because at any point you can just head toward the sound of the ocean, but the the experience of getting lost in a small park so close to a town crowded with summer visitors was actually quite enjoyable.

Munson Creek Falls This is a great bang for the buck hike, as the less-than-a-mile-long trail ends with a view of the tallest waterfall in the Coast Range. Though I am pretty “meh” about waterfalls, as Sawyer points out in the book another highlight of the trail are the trees along the path. “It’s hard to find accessible old growth hikes,” he said. “I think this is one of the best.” I took a lot longer than usual for the short hike since I had to try not to fall flat on my face as looked up at the giant cedar and spruce trees.
Kilchis Point Reserve I’m including this in honor of my late friend Dennis Gibson, who reminded me that having limited mobility doesn’t have to equal limited desire for adventure. A result of a large group effort, this flat and well-maintained series of paths which includes sections with paving stones, could be enjoyed with a partner in a good jogging stroller or wheelchair with sturdy tires. The site is steeped in local culture, including once being home to one of the largest Native American villages on the northern Oregon Coast. Market on your calendar The Itinerant Artists Marketplace will celebrate its first anniversary on Tuesday, Nov. 21, with an allday party at Lincoln City Outlets, featuring cookies for all guests and the chance to win a gift basket packed with artisan wares. But as word of the marketplace spread, it became apparent that the shop was a success and organizers decided to keep on going. Offerings include Pendleton wool selvedge rugs; beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings; leather purses, wallets and belts; coloring books; glass art; gourmet dog treats; inspiring wall art; handmade ponchos; handmade essential oils; hand-felted wraps, scarves and table runners; scroll saw home décor items; sea shell wreaths; porcelain wall art; photography; knitted hats; and pet scarves. The marketplace is located in suite 309 at the Lincoln City Outlets, next door to Harry & David. Everyone will be out of their element at the Tuesday, Nov. 21, meeting of the Oregon Coast Learning Institute, with SCUBA diving and marine mammal strandings both on the agenda. Jill and Bori Olla will get the learning started at 10 am with “Diving Bonaire,” and account of their underwater adventures in the waters around this small Caribbean island throughout the past 15 years. Bonaire is surrounded by a healthy coral reef, which attracts a bounty of fish life and other marine invertebrates. A retired marine biologist, Bori Olla has been widely published in a number of professional journals on a variety of subjects dealing with marine behavioral ecology. At 1 pm, Jim Rice will present “Marine Mammals Ashore,” a look at how stranding events offer a wealth of information to researchers and resource managers. “Strandings provide valuable insight into the lives of marine mammals,” Rice said, “including their seasonal distribution, life history, environmental contaminant exposures, and incidents of human interaction

Tips on how to get your book into print will be on offer this Sunday, Nov. 19, in Newport when Valerie Ihsan of Willow Bench Books presents “The Nitty Gritty of Self-Publishing.” Ihsan, author of “The Scent of Apple Tea” and “Smell the Blue Sky: Young, Pregnant and Widowed,” will discuss why indie publishing is a lucrative and viable alternative to traditional publishing, what you need to know before starting the process, and what to consider while making important decisions. She will share her self-publishing checklist and
answer questions. Winner of the B.R.A.G. Medallion for top indiepublished books, Ihsan co-chaired the Mid-Valley Chapter of Willamette Writers for seven years and currently teaches lowcost publishing classes for authors. She also teaches various workshops on writing and offers editing and proofreading services through her Yellow Pen Editing company. As a certified bereavement facilitator and licensed massage therapist, Ihsan teaches workshops on managing grief, such as
“Booze and Chocolate Aren’t the Only Ways to Cope: Turning Negative Emotions into Art.” Sunday’s talk, hosted by the Willamette Writers’ Coast Branch, is free and open to all and will run from 2 to 4 pm at the Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street. Forty-fy your weekend All are welcome on Saturday, Nov. 18, as the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians holds its 40th annual Restoration Pow-Wow at Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City. This free event begins with a grand entry at 6 pm. American Indian vendors will be offering jewelry, beadwork and other items for sale throughout the day. The pow-wow celebrates the signing of Public Law 95-195, which re-established government-to-government relations between the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the federal government. The Siletz Tribe had been terminated from federal recognition in August 1954. In the late 1960s, it became apparent that the only way to preserve and revitalize Siletz Tribal sovereignty, community and culture was for the Siletz Tribe to regain its status as a Tribe recognized by the United States. In November 1977, after years of intense lobbying, Congress and President Jimmy Carter approved Public Law 95-195, which reinstated recognition of the Siletz as a federal Indian Tribe. The Siletz Tribe was the second in the nation — and the first in Oregon — to achieve restoration. Chinook Winds Casino Resort is located at 1777 NW 44th Street.
