GARIBALDI — The last week in November is a relatively quiet one on the Oregon Coast; making it the perfect time to take a breath and plan for the holidays. And no holiday season is complete without a trip on the Candy Cane Express, a locomotive ride from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach powered by equal parts steam and cookie crumbs. This week’s striking cover photo courtesy of Martin E. Hansen. See page 9

LINCOLN CITY — The twin delights of Pixie Kitchen and Pixieland loom large in the memories of folks who spent time in Lincoln City during the ’70s. And a pair of free Pixie ornamentmaking workshops at the North Lincoln County Historical Museum mean that no house need be without a touch of magic this holiday season. See page 6

WHAT GIVES? Find out how you can help local causes, with Giving Tuesday Seems like once you reach November, days don’t mean a thing unless they have a descriptor to lend them a little pizzazz. First came Black Friday, which encouraged people to work off the Thanksgiving calories with a good old-fashioned stampede in pursuit of a discounted television. Then came Cyber Monday, which allowed exhausted stampeders to continue the pursuit of bargains while seated at their computer. Now, as an antidote to these two giants of commercialism, there’s Giving Tuesday, a day for generosity and the real spirit of the holidays — dedicated to charity, nationwide and right here at home. Lincoln City Cultural Center will be offering people the chance to give in person as it hosts the second annual Giving Tuesday Generosity Bazaar from 10 am to 7 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 29. This one-stop giving destination features booths staffed by 15 local nonprofits, service clubs and student groups, all raising money for good causes in Lincoln City. There will be complimentary donuts and coffee, festive music and all the donation receipts your accountant could ever want, all under one roof. “Last year’s Giving Tuesday Generosity Bazaar was a wonderful experience, generating barrels full of food and toys, heartwarming donations for all our participating groups, and a lovely sense of holiday spirit,” said cultural center Executive Director Niki Price. “Don’t think that you can’t
make a difference, no matter what your circumstances might be. Give money or give time, make a pledge or pay it forward — Giving Tuesday will make you feel like you belong to something good — I guarantee.” Among the donations being accepted at the bazaar are non-perishable food for the Lincoln City Food Pantry and new, unwrapped toys for the North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District volunteer toy drive. Guests will also be able to learn about the Lincoln City Emergency Warming Shelter, the Warm & Dry program and Lincoln City Homeless Solutions, which work together to provide clothing and shelter to the growing population of homeless people on the coast. They’ll be accepting donations of cash and checks, as well as clean, warm jackets for men and women. Friends of the Lincoln County Animal Shelter will be on hand, selling copies of its 2017 Pet Calendar, proceeds from which help pay for care and feeding of dogs and cats at the shelter. Meanwhile, the PEO Sisterhood will be offering festively wrapped packages of hazelnuts to benefit its scholarship programs for women. Nothing says holiday cheer like a fresh pine wreath and Rotary members will be happy to sell you one for every member of the family, putting the proceeds toward scholarships for local high school students headed to college. Family Promise of Lincoln City will also be in

LEAP INTO THE HOLIDAYS Rock violinist Aaron Meyer will return to the Oregon Coast on Thursday, Dec. 1, bringing his electrifying stage presence to the Lincoln City Cultural Center. Meyer’s cutting edge musical style has been inspired by his worldwide travels, which have included performances from Venice, Italy, to the ancient Cambodian temples of Ankgor Wat. Meyer played his first violin when he was five, and by the time he was 11 years old, he had soloed with the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra, bringing audiences to their feet with his inspiring performance. He studied the violin with his father, Julian Meyer, who taught the world-renowned violinist Sarah Chang. His training continued with Luis Biava, associate conductor with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and also at Indiana University with Yuval Yaron, a student of
Jascha Heifetz. After performing as an original band member for the world-renowned band Pink Martini, he recorded on the album “Sympathique,” which sold a million copies worldwide. He went on to refine his own unique sound, blending original music with cuttingedge arrangements of timeless classics. “Aaron brings a unique and gorgeous voice to the violin,” said Phil Baker of Pink Martini. “He has combined lyricism and amazing technique to become one of the best violinists around.” Meyer’s broad range of music includes everything from a dynamic rendition of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” to his exquisite versions of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and the Beatles classic “Let it Be.” His most recent album features a spectacular re-
make of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Meyer has released nine albums, with his latest, “Hang On To Your Pants,” featuring a nine-piece band performing instrumental versions of timeless classic rock tunes such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Carry On My Wayward Son,” “Hotel California,” “Sultan’s of Swing” and “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” “I really wanted to arrange these songs instrumentally for rock violin and my band,” he said. “The violin soars with these anthem melodies and these songs are classics, everyone knows and loves.” Meyer will take to the stage at 7 pm in the auditorium of the cultural center, 540 NE Hwy. 101, joined by longtime musical collaborator, Jean Pierre Garau. Tickets, $20, are available at www.lincolncityculturalcenter.org or by calling 541-994-9994.
Efforts to restore the pixie population in the Lincoln City area will continue on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 1 and 2, when the North Lincoln County Historical Museum holds a fresh round of Pixie Ornament Workshops. Lincoln City has a long heritage when it comes to pixie folk. First there was Pixie Kitchen, the Oceanlake restaurant famed for pixie dust and generous helpings. Then Pixieland, a magical amusement park near Otis. Pixie sightings declined sharply when the amusement park shut down in the ’70s and ceased altogether when the restaurant closed its doors in 1985. The museum will be doing its bit to bolster pixie numbers with a pair of Pixie Ornament Workshops running from 3:30 to 5:30 pm on Thursday, Dec. 1, and Friday, Dec. 2. Each participant will get to make their own pixie and dress it in regalia including beads, jewels, feathers and other ornamentation. All art supplies are provided. Each new pixie will be named, given a birth certificate and added to the list of known pixies residing in Lincoln City. Space is limited to 15 children on each day and an adult must accompany each child. To reserve a ticket, call 541-996-6614 or drop by the museum at 4907 SW Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City. This program is part of the Arts in Education and Community Arts Initiative of the Oregon Coast Children’s Theatre and Youth Art Center based in Toledo and is sponsored in part by Lincoln City and other partners.

Tree-cutting permits are now on sale at Siuslaw National Forest offices, giving adventurous souls the green light to venture out in search of the perfect Christmas tree. Permits cost $5 a piece or are free with the Every Kid In A Park pass available to all students attending the fourth grade this school year. Siuslaw National Forest staff members recommend having a specific tree or cutting location in mind before buying a Christmas tree permit. “Searching for a suitable tree within the temperate rainforests of the Oregon Coast can be challenging,” said resource specialist Courtney Schreiber. “Trees on
the Siuslaw grow very quickly, so it can be difficult to find one that fits inside a typical home.” Schreiber also noted that the dominant conifer species on the forest are Douglas-firs and Sitka spruces, which are not as highly prized for Christmas trees as Noble firs or other high-elevation fir species more commonly found in the Cascade Range. “But the search can still be a fun family adventure,” she said. Permits are available at locations including the offices in Hebo, 31525 Hwy. 22, (call 503-392-5100) and Waldport, 1130 Forestry Lane (call 541563-8400).
...and thanks for all the fish
There’s nothing quite like Thanksgiving traditions — a turkey dinner, snapping the wishbone, the Macy’s Parade and salmon fishing on the Oregon Coast. Wait; what was that last one? Well, it might not be a tradition just yet, but the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife hopes to make it as much a part of the holidays as pumpkin pie and indigestion by offering free fishing this Thanksgiving weekend. On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26, fishing, crabbing and clamming will be free throughout Oregon, with no licenses, tags or
endorsements required. All other fishing regulations will still apply. ODFW spokesperson Rick Hargrave said the weekend offers the perfect chance to get the kids out of the house, entertain out-ofstate visitors and get some respite from the neverending football. “Getting outside fishing and enjoying Oregon’s natural areas is a great way to spend quality family time over the holidays,” he said. While the weather can be challenging at Thanksgiving, fall can be a great time to go trout fishing: many ponds and lakes have been stocked this fall and fish are feeding
hungrily for the winter. And on Friday, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is waiving day use fees at state parks, some of which include great fishing opportunities. “We’re hoping anglers have so much fun and success at this free fishing weekend, they’ll want to participate in a second free fishing weekend scheduled for Dec. 31 and Jan. 1,” Hargrave said. The additional free fishing weekends were authorized by the 2015 Oregon State Legislature as a way of introducing new anglers to the sport. For more information, go to www.dfw.state.or.us.

STEAM EFFORT
SO GET ON BOARD, WITH THE CANDY CANE EXPRESS By Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY
Everyone knows Santa travels by sleigh, right? The only question is whether it’s the “one-horse open” variety mentioned in “Jingle Bells” or the kind that’s pulled by a fleet of airborne reindeer guided by a shining schnoz. Well not on the Oregon Coast. Here, Santa travels by train. And the Oregon Coast Scenic railroad is offering kids of all ages the chance to ride alongside Saint Nic, with the return of its popular Candy Cane Express. Departing three times a day for two weekends in December, the excursion treats passengers to an out-and-back trip from Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach aboard a steam train packed with festive flair and festooned with Christmas lights to make it glow in the low winter light. Scott Wickert, the railroad’s founder and chief mechanical officer, said the Candy Cane Express began in 2008 as a way of extending the operating season beyond summertime, when crews run regular sightseeing trips along the same route. For the past few years, the railroad has used one of its diesel electric
locomotives to pull the Candy Cane Express. But this year, passengers will once again get to enjoy the romance and charm of a steam engine, with Wickert pressing the railroad’s 1925 Alco locomotive into service. He said the engine, which started its life in California, operating on the McCloud Railroad near Mount Shasta, gets a great response whenever it hits the tracks. “Everyone wants the steam engine out,” he said, adding. “The colder the weather is outside the more the steam shows. It will leave a real big plume of steam going down the tracks. It attracts a lot of attention.” The trip from Garibaldi to Rockaway takes about 30 minutes each way, with the train doing an almost immediate turnaround upon reaching Rockaway Beach — not stopping to take on more passengers. Wickert said this is so that Santa and Mrs. Claus have enough time to visit with each of the kids on board. “The good thing about the train ride is the kids get a bit more time interacting with Santa than they would in other places because it’s not so rushed,” he said. “It’s a neat atmosphere to be on a train talking with Santa.” As well as the chance to whisper their Christmas list in Santa’s ear,
passengers will be treated to hot chocolate, a locally baked holiday cookie and candy canes. And for any passengers who simply refuse to believe in Santa, elves or flying reindeer, the trip still has plenty to offer. “The views of Tillamook Bay are exceptional from really the moment you leave Garibaldi,” Wickert said. “Traveling on the highway you are really flying by so quick you really can’t get a good look.” “Depending on the weather and time of year you can see a lot of the birds out on the water, sometimes
you can see seals,” he added. “It just depends how diligently you watch.” While Santa will be resplendent in his traditional red satin suit, passengers are encouraged to come as they are and dress with chilly winter temperatures in mind. When weather permits, the railroad will add an open-topped carriage to the train, giving people the option of getting that much closer to the scenery. Wickert said the trip is a highlight for the railroad staff, many of whom are volunteers and who come from across the region to help out. “Everyone on board this train is
doing it because they love it,” he said. “It’s a labor of love.” The Candy Cane Express departs at 10 am, noon and 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3 and 4, and Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 11. Tickets are $20 for adults, $19 for seniors aged 62 and above, $15 for kids aged three to 10 and free for kids under three. Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is located in the center of Garibaldi at 306 American Avenue. For more information or to book tickets, go to www.oregoncoastscenic. org.

Art with a point For some art shows, the barriers to entry are pretty high — years of artistic training, expensive equipment and a well-trimmed goatee to stroke as you compose your masterpieces. But once every year, the Newport Visual Arts Center hosts a very different kind of show, one that is open to anyone with four thumbtacks and an idea. Now in its 26th year, the PushPin Show aims to recognize creative talent throughout Lincoln County, with artists of all ages and stripes encouraged to participate. Everyone is invited to take part, from beginners and emerging visual artists to established professionals, crafters, poets and literary artists, hobbyists, youngsters, oldsters, college students, retirees and families. The original Pushpin Show was the brainchild of local artist and art activist Jimmy Frankfort. And while it has grown over the years, the show
still adheres to an inclusive, all-county residents’ show that exemplifies the mission of theOregon Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA) to celebrate, promote and develop community arts. Participants must be able to hang their work themselves, using no more than four push pins. All work must be original and suitable for display in a family show. Artists are encouraged to price their work for sale, with the OCCA retaining a 40-percent commission (reduced to 35 percent for OCCA members). Artists should deliver their work directly to the Runyan Gallery at the Visual Arts Center, 777 NW Beach Drive between 11 am and 4 pm on Friday, Dec. 2, and Saturday, Dec. 3. The exhibit will open on Saturday, Dec. 3, with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm and run through December. Guests will be invited to vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Artists submitting work to the PushPin Show will be considered for the “Mayors’ Show,” which will return for its second year in January 2017. This year, Newport Mayor Sandy Roumagoux will curate the show alongside Mayor Billie Jo Smith of Toledo, and Newport Visual Arts Center Director Tom Webb. The Force and the forest Lincoln City’s Chinook Winds Casino Resort will be transformed into a winter wonderland starting on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when the Fantasy of Trees returns, showcasing Christmas trees decorated and sponsored by local businesses and community members. In past years, tree themes have included Betty Boop, firemen and ballerinas, with recent entries branching out to include pop culture favorites like “Star Wars.” Now in its 18th year, the event is organized by Angels Anonymous, a non-profit foundation that provides immediate and basic assistance to those in need in the greater north Lincoln County area. The trees will be on display from noon to 8 pm every day from Wednesday, Nov. 30, through Friday, Dec. 2, and again from 10 am to 3 pm on
Saturday, Dec. 3, in advance of The Song of the Angels Holiday Ball, which starts at 5:30 pm that evening. It will be a night to dress up in your festive best for an elegant evening on the town and enjoy a meal of passed hors d’ oeuvres, seafood, steak and baked potato along with dessert stations. This year, Beatles inspired band Blackbird
is returning to provide the evening’s entertainment. The auction of the Christmas trees, special items and wreaths will take place during the Angels Ball along with numerous drawings. Tickets, $75, are available at the Lincoln City Chamber of Commerce, located at 4039 NW Logan Road or by calling 541-994-3070.
Some light entertainment Tickets are now on sale for a party that will give guests a front-row seat to Newport’s Lighted Boat Parade while raising funds to preserve the town’s iconic lighthouses. The Friends of Yaquina Lighthouses event will run from 5 to 8 pm on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Mo’s Annex on the Newport Bayfront, offering an unbeatable view of the illuminated boats as they make their way around Yaquina Bay. For $22 per person, guests will be treated to dinner, a non-alcoholic drink and one ticket to a raffle featuring a host of great prizes, including a tablet computer. For tickets, call 541574-3129 or email foyl@ yaquinalights.org.

Helen McCrory and Tom Burke in “The Deep Blue Sea
DIVE BACK INTO THEATER
The new season of National Theatre Live in HD will kick o this Sunday, Nov. 27, at the Newport Performing Arts Center with a screening of postwar drama “The Deep Blue Sea.â€? Helen McCrory returns to the National Theatre in Terence Rattigan’s devastating masterpiece, playing alongside Tom Burke. The curtain opens on a at
in Ladbroke Grove, West London, 1952. When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbors in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous aair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge. With it comes a portrait of need, loneliness and long-repressed passion. Behind the fragile
veneer of postwar civility burns a brutal sense of loss and longing. The screening, hosted by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, will start at 7 pm at 777 W. Olive Street. Tickets, $16 for adults, $13 for seniors and $11 for students are available online at www.coastarts.org, at the box oďŹƒce or by calling 541-265ARTS (2787).

OF TIME
Don’t be late to this Saturday’s Tree Lighting Party in Lincoln City It’s getting toward the busy part of the year for Santa Claus, so who can blame him for hitching a ride on a rig that doesn’t need to stop for red lights? That’s exactly what Saint Nick will be doing this Friday, Nov. 25, when he makes his appearance at the Lincoln City Cultural Center’s fifth annual Tree Lighting Party, arriving courtesy of a fire truck from North Lincoln Fire & Rescue. The party will kick off Lincoln City’s holiday season, with Christmas carols, an ornament workshop, live music, a cakewalk and the (Not Quite 11th Hour) Santa Sale vendor fair, which continues through Saturday, Nov. 26. Doors will open at noon on Friday, with Georgia Roelof on hand to welcome visitors with a performance of handbell carols. Guests will be invited to browse the Santa Sale, a juried show of 24 artists offering a host of handmade gifts, from ornaments and rugs to jewelry and wearable art. The cultural center’s gift shop will also be open and showcasing its own range of treasures. And visitors are also encouraged to visit the center’s Chessman Gallery to view “Little Houses” an exhibit of fused glass houses by Kate Saunders paired with poems from husband Ger Killeen. From 2 to 5 pm, kids of all ages are invited to create cardboard Christmas snowflake ornaments in a Make-andTake Ornament Workshop run by Chessman Gallery Director Krista Eddy. All ages are welcome, but kids under the age of eight should be accompanied by an adult. As the evening draws in, attention will shift to the tree — a 20-foot Noble
Fir donated by Noble Creek Tree Farm, felled by Capt. Jim Kusz of North Lincoln Fire & Rescue and transported by Lincoln City Towing. Installed by local crews from Pacific Power, the tree received a decorative makeover from Eddy, with help from event manager Judy Hardy, information center volunteer Dawn Bredimus and a crew of cultural center volunteer elves. At 5 pm, Kenny’s IGA will provide cookies and hot chocolate, while the talented Sweet Adelines regale the crowd with Christmas carols. At around 5:15 pm, Mayor Don Williams will lead the crowd in the countdown around the tree on the northwest lawn. If the weather is too stormy, the countdown and singing will take place indoors. After the tree is illuminated and the crowd sings another carol, Santa Claus will arrive via fire truck, disembarking at the south entrance and making his way down the hall to the auditorium stage, where he will hear wishes and give away candy canes until 7 pm. The annual Tree Lighting Party Cake Walk, featuring tasty donated cookies, cupcakes and other baked goods, will begin at 6 pm in the dance studio. The carnival atmosphere will continue on Saturday, with the Santa Sale, Chessman Gallery and gift shop all open from 10 am to 4 pm, and face painter Julie Fiedler on hand to add festive flair, by donation. The Lincoln City Cultural Center is located at 540 NE Hwy. 101. For more information, go to www. lincolncity-culturalcenter.org, or call 541994-9994.
