Manzanita’s Hoffman Center for the Arts will host a dramatic reading of “Still Life: Scenes from a Faraway Nearby” by local actor Megan (Liz) Cole on Sunday, Oct. 30. The reading will be followed by a professional panel discussion on end-of-life issues. “Still Life” addresses the question of when, or whether, to remove a ventilator tube from a catastrophically injured patient. Other questions include: Who gets to make the determination of when a life should end? Where is the patient’s voice in the discussion when the ventilator itself silences that voice? Is life at any price a viable option for those who wish to live passionately? And what is a life that is worth living? Cole is a professional stage and TV actor who also develops performances and lectures for healthcare venues, with an emphasis on palliative and end-of life-care issues. Discussion panel members will include Matt Whitaker, Oregon and California state director of Compassion & Choices; and retired family physicians Peter and Bonnie Reagan.

Comedy on the Coast will be celebrating the life of one of its co-founders this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28 and 29, with shows in honor of Kenny Bob Davis, who died last month. Davis’ longtime friends Tim Haldeman and David Gee will be joined on stage at Chinook Winds Casino Resort by Ron Kenney and Art Krug to ensure a funny and memorable show that truly honors his memory. Davis began as a 1960s guitar playing folk-singer and surfer, and went on to headline all over the US as a solo stand-up comedian and one-man corporate showman. A US Marine veteran, he was regularly invited to perform at USO shows both abroad and on aircraft carriers at sea. His career included film and TV productions such as “Gremlins,” “ER,” “Zach & Cody,” “Sisters” and “Murder She Wrote.” Twelve years ago it was Davis who gave Tim Haldeman what would turn out to be his big break in comedy, calling the seasoned actor on stage to warm up the crowd at a charity golf tournament after the opening comedian failed to show up. Little did Haldeman know that this would launch his second career. Over the past decade, he has performed a solid stand-up act all over the country in several different venues. His TV work includes parts in “Dante’s Peak” “ER,” “Cold Case” and a recurring role on the “Drew Carey Show.” David Gee has made folks laugh opening for Bonnie Raitt, The Beach Boys and Ray Charles concerts, as

Lincoln City author Rebecca Edwards Yasenchak will be the featured guest author at the Wednesday, Nov. 2, Fall Book Sale at Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital. After a career with the Internal Revenue Service during which she wrote “scores of technically accurate and extremely boring position papers, decision documents and training manuals,” Yasenchak switched to creative writing. First came a family memoir, then a cookbook and now “Patchwork: The Fabric of a Life,” a historical fiction novel based on the life of Euphemia Minor.
In 1876, Minor was thrust into the role of a single parent when her abusive, alcoholic husband of 14 years abandoned her and their four young boys. Alone in an isolated cabin, she had to find a way to not only survive, but thrive. The book sale, hosted by Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital Auxiliary in cooperation with Bob’s Beach Books, will run from 7 am to 4 pm in the hospital cafeteria at 3043 NE 28th Street. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of new furniture for the surgery department waiting areas. For more information, call 541-996-7132.

The Scariest Catch
Commentary by Steve Sabatka You hear things on the Oregon Coast that you don’t hear anywhere else. Slurred, stammering wisdom. Crystal clear craziness. It’s all part of living on the edge. But when, during a recent visit to a local seafood restaurant, I overheard a conversation about the West Coast being overrun by Godzilla-sized crabs, I sat up and paid attention. I won’t name the place, because I don’t want it to be overrun with RV’s and hipster foodies, but if you live here, you’ll figure it out. The food is outstanding, the staff know about seasons and tides, and tourists are routinely reminded of their status as guests. I was there a few weeks ago, sitting outside at one of the picnic tables and eating a crab burger. Just a few yards away, The Crab Master tended a large metal pot full of Dungeness crabs, all in various stages of the cooking process. A gaunt, intense man, he seemed to be possessed by some kind of Ahabstyle, Quint-type hatred for all crustaceans, and
I wondered if he bore the scars of some awful pinching. One of the other customers, a smooth-faced pilgrim that struck me, for some reason, as being from Lake Oswego, a nice enough chap, but definitely out of his element, decided to rub elbows with the common people, and strike up a conversation with The Master. “We were watching that crab show on TV last night,” the Oswegian said. “Pretty cool. Really made us appreciate you guys.” The Master looked up from his steaming, squeaking cauldron of culinary doom and I was certain that he was about to cut loose with some bitter, salt water put-down. But no. “They don’t tell you about the radiation,” he said, in an abyssal, John Carradine voice. It had been five and a half years since the Fukushima disaster. “I’ve seen things.” The Master stared into the seething water. “Horrors from Mrs. Paul’s worst fever dreams. Giant, monstrous things that
should not be allowed to live.” I don’t know about the Oswegian, but I could almost hear a voice from a B-movie trailer: “See: Wave after ravenous wave of giant crabs, rising up from the surf in a tidal wave of terror!” The Master smiled with stained teeth. “It won’t be long before I’ll have to buy a bigger pot. Of course, there will come a day when there won’t be a pot big enough.” “Big enough?” But then, the Oswegian made the horrifying, jumbo-lump connection, and he turned the color of tartar sauce. “See: Huge claws, clicking, snapping, wreaking their crushing vengeance on mankind! The Master reached into the pot with a pair of metal tongs, extracted a crab, and seemed to speak directly to it. “Monster crabs will take some of us, but those of us that survive will change. We’ll evolve. I can already feel it.” “See: The genesis of a new mutant species of man!” “Join us?” The Master offered the steaming, dripping crab to the Oswegian, who backed
quickly away to warn other members of his affluent tribe. I did not take note of their reaction; I was too busy examining my crab burger, wondering if I was really that hungry, and wishing I had a Geiger counter. The Crab Master went about his business, filling a basket with cooked crabs and taking them inside to be sold to an unsuspecting public. When he came back outside and happened to see what I was doing, he laughed and shook his head, and I realized that his crab story had been a prank. I was relieved. I had not crash-landed in the middle of a Roger Corman flick, and the West Coast was safe from giant, man-eating crabs. Hopefully, though, there will never be a shortage of gullible visitors. Steve Sabatka teaches at Newport High School — home of the Cubs. His young adult novel, “Mister Fishback’s Monster,” is available from Black Bedsheet Books.

WOMEN’S WRITES
on stage
Author’s characters leap into life in “Jake’s Women” Story & photos by Rebecca Stone For the TODAY
What goes on in the mind of a writer? A lot, if you’re a novelist with control issues, a marriage that seems to be spiraling out of control — and a runaway imagination. Lincoln City’s Theatre West kicks off its Season of Simon with “Jake’s Women,” the first in a series of five Neil Simon plays, in honor of the playwright’s upcoming 90th birthday next July. The characteristically dry comedy revolves around writer Jake, deftly played by Bryan Kirsch, who guides us through every second of the play, sometimes narrating the story via monologue. It seems that Jake is more comfortable dealing with versions of people designed by his imagination than engaging with real-life human beings. But his life has reached a precipice. His wife, Maggie, portrayed by a freshfaced and convincing Robin Kirsch, is so frustrated with his lack of presence in their relationship and his inability to engage in life as more than just an observer, that she tearfully proposes a six-month separation. Unable to simply rewrite reality, Jake deals with the crisis by falling back on the very coping skill that is driving Maggie away. He seeks advice by holding conversations with a cast of imagined characters from his life, both past and present — all women. They come and go with abandon and witty Simon repartee, offering insights on his distressing situation. The problem is, they are all insights cooked up in his own head. In fact, Jake delights in his ability to control his imaginary advisers, what they wear and what they say. Until he can’t. Eventually, the figments of his imagination begin to escape the bounds of his control and appear unbidden. Jake
Above: Jake (Bryan Kirsch) and real-life Maggie (Robin Kirsch) contemplate separation Left: Jake is analyzed by his imaginary shrink Edith (Joy Gallagher)
begins to question his sanity. Among the women who drift in and out of Jake’s real and imagined conversations are Maggie; Julie, his late wife, with a turn by Karen Davis reminiscent of a sepiatone photograph; his tell-it-like-it is sister, Karen, played with gusto by Stina SeegerGibson; and his shrink, Edith, played with delectable snark by Joy Gallagher. Dahlia Merry and Brandie Jurasin offer sweetness and level-headedness as his daughter Molly at the ages of 12 and 21, respectively; and his current romantic distraction, Sheila, played by Roseanne Johnson, is the very essence of confusion as Jake tries to communicate with her, while arguing with one of his figments at the same time. Directed by Theatre West veteran Bonnie Ross, with Linda Jackson as assistant director, Andrew Schmitz as stage manager, with lighting and sound by Ashley Ross, “Jake’s Women” is a solid representation of Simon’s trademark rom-
com style. Through his commentary on the complexities that surface when neuroses and life collide, he portrays the lives of everyday people, struggling with everyday problems, peppered with New York angst and sparkling dialogue. The wordiness of the play can, however, prove challenging for even the most stalwart of thespians. “It’s a very talky play,” Ross said, “so we cast it early, to give the actors more time to learn their lines.” Kirsch, who rarely leaves the stage, is probably grateful for that. “This is the biggest role I’ve had — and I’ve had quite a few,” says the actor, who has at least 13 years of treading the boards tucked under his belt. He adds that one of the most challenging aspects of playing Jake is the huge range of emotions involved — not to mention the lengthy monologues. Ross said staging a play populated with real and imagined characters created the challenge of how to let the audience know
which conversations were real and which were happening only inside Jake’s head. To tackle the bulk of that issue, the stage was divided into two areas: one in which, for the most part, reality resides and another inhabited by the imaginary characters. But at least staging, also done by Ross, was a fairly straightforward affair. “Everything takes place in a New York apartment,” she said. “So we just built one set.” So what does go on in the mind of a writer? What insights does Jake gain from the women, real or imagined, in his life? Will he save his marriage? You’ll have to come Theatre West’s production of “Jake’s Women” to find out. You can catch “Jake’s Women” on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, through November 12, with a 2 pm matinée on Sunday, Nov. 6. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors (60 and over) and students over 12, and $10 for children 12 and under. Special group discounts are also available. For tickets, call 541-994-5663. Training on how to deal with marine debris will be on offer in Newport on Sunday, Oct. 30, in a free workshop offered by the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST). The COASST Marine Debris program is focused on the intersection of science, conservation and communities. Instead of identifying debris, the program characterizes it and measures its abundance in particular zones of the beach. Through an interactive, hands-on workshop, trainees will learn how to collect data that speak directly to the source and transport pathways
of debris, as well as to the potential harm to people, wildlife and local coastal ecosystems. Volunteers do not need any prior experience
with scientific data collection, just a commitment to survey a specific beach at least once a month. COASST is a citizen science project of the University of Washington in partnership with state, tribal and federal agencies, environmental organizations, and community groups. The Oct. 30 training session will run from 11 am to 5 pm at the Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Drive, with a short break for lunch To reserve a spot, call 206221-6893 or email coasst@ uw.edu.

Whales and ales We’re no stranger to whales on the Oregon Coast, where anyone with a little patience can spot pod after pod just oshore as they make their annual journeys from Alaska to Mexico. But the Thursday, Nov. 3, installment of Science on Tap will oer a very dierent view of these familiar leviathans as Dr. Nick Pyenson presents “The fossil whale highway.â€? Pyenson, curator of fossil marine mammals at the Smithsonian Institution, is working on 3D digitization of the world’s largest marine mammal graveyard in the Atacama of Chile, a project that gives clues about how the creatures evolved. “Each group of marine mammals has undergone dramatic evolutionary transformations from their terrestrial ancestries, with attendant modiďŹ cations to multiple anatomical, behavioral and ecological systems,â€? he said. “These multiple transitions provide a series of evolutionary comparisons that form the basis for understanding how marine mammals have diversiďŹ ed in the oceans.â€? Pyenson will discuss the Cerro Ballena, a unique fossil site in the Atacama Desert, where he and his team worked with Chilean scientists to excavate dozens of whale skeletons, along

GOOD GOURD!
HOW MUCH FUN CAN YOU SQUASH INTO ONE HALLOWEEN NIGHT IN NEWPORT?
Daylight scarings time Newport’s Oregon Coast Aquarium will offer a familyfriendly Halloween this year, replacing its traditional and occasionally grisly Creatures of the Night with a PG counterpart, Creatures of the Day. Aimed at children 12 and under, the event invites kids to dress up in their costumes and explore the decorated aquarium grounds. Guests will have ample opportunity for photos — including selfies with the “Bag Monster”, a plastic debriscovered character that asks kids to forgo disposable plastic bags and instead opt to carry their candy in a reusable bag. A “biofacts” station will allow visitors to feel the skin, bones and other creepy features of some of the Oregon coast’s native species. The Passages of the Deep “Discovery Zone” will also be open throughout the day, providing an array of fascinating and frightfully fun activities for toddlers and their families. Costumed children are eligible to enter a prize raffle, with several winners taking home a basket of goodies supplied by the aquarium gift shop. When accompanied by a
paying adult, children aged 3 to 12 can get in to the Creatures of the Day event in return for two cans of non-perishable food for either Food Share of Lincoln County or the Lincoln County Animal Shelter. The event is free to aquarium members and children under two, but food donations are encouraged. The aquarium is also hosting the OSU Extension 4-H Youth Development Program’s Halloween Trick or Treat Street from 5 to 7 pm. Mock storefronts will feature costumed 4-H youth handing out treats to all who enter. The event is designed to provide a safe and dry environment for children 12 and under to go trick or treating. Admission is by donation of two cans of non-perishable food or an equivalent cash donation, all of which goes to Food Share of Lincoln County. Guests that attended Creatures of the Day are invited to attend Trick or Treat Street without making an additional donation. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located at 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road. For more information, call 541-867-FISH or go to aquarium.org.
TRICK OR TREAT TRIO Newport has always been a sweet spot for folks visiting the Oregon Coast, and will live up to its reputation this Halloween by offering three outdoor trick-or-treat celebrations for kids throughout town. From 3 to 5 pm merchants in the Nye Beach area will be handing out
treats to everyone brave enough to come calling along NW Coast Street. The Historic Bayfront district will hosting its trick-or-treat from 4 to 6 pm, with guests encouraged to come in costume. Last year, more than 30 Bayfront businesses participated in the festivities. And from 5 to 7 pm the Deco
District, centered on Highway 101 and SW Alder Street, will be welcoming costumed kids under 13 with accompanying parent or guardian. Spooky not scary, the Deco District Halloween is a chance to enjoy the evening as a 1930s traditional trick or treat with fancy costumes.
RETURN TO AN OLD HAUNT Spine-chilling tales will fill the Great Room at Newport’s Pacific Maritime Heritage Center this Friday, Oct. 28, as community members gather to share their own ghost sightings — including some that took place in that very building. The museum is located in a stately bay-view mansion that used to house the Smuggler’s Cove Nightclub, where several ghost sightings were reported — although it’s unclear how many of those were in the bar. Parts of the building’s rambling 30,000-squarefoot structure date from the 1920s and its stone foundation is from the original 1880s residence on this site. Now owned by the Lincoln County Historical Society, the building, located at 333 SE Bay Blvd., is the perfect location for an open mic evening of ghost storytelling. Starting at 5:30 pm, the moderated event will be held in front of the fireplace in the Great Room. The microphone will be turned up, the lights turned down, and treats will be provided. Tales of ghost encounters at Smugglers Cove or elsewhere in Lincoln County are particularly welcome but the mic is open for any ghost story that is

Roll the dice this election day If national politics seems like too much of a crap shoot, Oregon Coast Community College has a way to spend Nov. 8 that does not involve gambling with the nation’s future. “How to Play Craps,” led by Newport retiree and occasional bone-roller Dick Kilbride will unfold over the course of three evening sessions, culminating with a full game on the night the election results roll in. Kilbride will pull back the curtain on the glamorous game, familiar to so many from its supporting role in James Bond movies, to reveal the supporting structure of math that lies beneath. Thanks to support from Chinook Winds Casino Resort, students will get to learn at a genuine craps table set up in the resort’s Aces Sports Bar & Grill at the north end of Lincoln City. Kilbride’s class will run from 6 to 8 pm on Nov. 1, 3 and 8, with tuition $35 per person. A full list of community education classes, as well as small business and credit classes, is available in the fall edition of Catch the Wave course catalog, available online at www. oregoncoastcc.org/catch-the-wave-fall-2016.

Bold = Minus Tides. Tide tables are for recreational use. If you’re piloting the “Costa Concordia II” in front of your college roommate’s oceanfront bungalow at Otter Crest or Cape Lookout, talk to a harbormaster. Tide info courtesy tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. If you discover a seal pup or other stranded marine animal on the beach, do not approach, touch, or pour water on the animal. Instead, call 800-452-7888. Keep dogs leashed and far from all marine mammals. Japanese Tsunami Debris Info: Information on significant marine debris sightings on the coast can be reported to the NOAA Marine Debris Program at DisasterDebris@noaa.gov.

Coastal birder Ram Papish will be the speaker at the Newport meeting of the Oregon Chapter of the American Cetacean Society this Saturday, Oct. 29, giving a presentation on the birds that people can spot while watching for whales. Papish’s presentation will be packed with engaging photographs that highlight the diversity and abundance of seabirds and shorebirds on the Oregon Coast. The president of Yaquina Birders and Naturalists, Papish combines his education in fine art with his experiences working as a field biologist to create artistic and accurate wildlife images. For more than 20 field seasons, he worked as a biological sciences technician studying birds and other wildlife, primarily in Alaska. He has also authored and illustrated two children’s books: “The Little Fox” and “The Little Seal,” published by University of Alaska Press. His illustrations appear in
many books and publications, including the “Handbook of Oregon Birds,” “Northwest Birds in Winter,” and “Seabirds of Alaska.” He regularly presents on science and nature topics at bird festivals, local bird clubs and in public schools, combining his backgrounds in art, science and public speaking to engage and educate the public on environmental topics.
Papish lives in Toledo on six wooded acres with his wife, Dawn Harris, eight bird feeders, eight nest boxes, eighteen chickens and three rescued parrots. The free presentation will begin at 10 am at Newport Public Library, 35 NW Nye Street. For more information, contact Joy Primrose at marine_lover4ever@yahoo. com or 541-517-8754.
