This week’s top five

1

TOLEDO — The Labor Day Weekend Art Walk has always been a time for artists to open up their galleries and studios and show off their latest work. But this year’s event will be as much about the great outdoors as these cozy creative spaces, with the fourth annual Plein Air painting contest making this easel-y the most satisfying artistic outing of the week.

2

LINCOLN CITY — Say it after me: Roolya Boolya. That’s how to pronounce the name of the band bringing foot-stomping Celtic tunes to the Lincoln City Cultural Center this Sunday. Roolya Boolya. Sounds better every time, doesn’t it? Now try adding a charming Irish lilt. There you go…

3

GLENEDEN BEACH — When it comes to blossoming into a fully-fledged knowit-all, “Jeopardy!” can only get you so far. For true, transcendental levels of knowledge — from the essential to the downright obscure — there’s only one place to go: The Oregon Coast Learning Institute. Take a seat and prepare to get smarter.

4

YACHATS — But mere facts alone will not keep body and soul together. For those in search of comfort food with a hefty side order of community, the Labor Day Pie Social serves up both with a smile. Take a seat and prepare to get sweeter.

Alaska Salmon Penne 1 package (12 ounces) penne 1/2 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and halved Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 Tablespoon fresh thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 3 Tablespoons olive oil (divided) 12 ounces Alaska Salmon, fresh, thawed or frozen Salt & Black pepper

Directions

•Cook the pasta in boiling water for about 8 minutes, or according to package instructions, until al dente. •Add the green beans to the water during the last 3 to 4 minutes of cooking time. •Drain pasta and beans, reserving 3 tablespoons of the cooking liquid, then return pasta, beans and reserved liquid to the pan. Add the lemon zest, lemon juice, thyme leaves, garlic salt and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. •While pasta cooks, rinse any ice glaze from frozen Alaska Salmon under cold water; pat dry with paper towel. Heat a heavy nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Brush both sides of salmon with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Place salmon in heated skillet and cook, uncovered, about 3 to 4 minutes, until browned. •Shake pan occasionally to keep fish from sticking. Turn salmon over; cover pan tightly and reduce heat to medium. • Cook an additional 6 to 8 minutes for frozen salmon or 3 to 4 minutes for fresh/thawed fish. Cook just until fish is opaque throughout. •Break salmon into large chunks (removing skin, if any); add to pasta. Cook and stir gently over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with lemon wedges and thyme sprigs.

learn a little

Be a star student The Oregon Coast Learning Institute will be aiming for the stars as it kicks off a 14th year of educational presentations this Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a talk from astronomer Sifan Kahale. Kahale will share her scientific and personal observations of the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse and give a virtual tour of the PanSTARRS Observatory on Maui, where she works as an observer and software engineer. Kahale’s presentation will begin at 10 am, and will be followed after lunch by Larry Martin’s “The Cold War, Revisited” at 1 pm. Martin will present a historical account of US relations with Russia and the former Soviet Union since the end of World War II, covering the major hot spots and crisis points of this dramatic era. OCLI is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization in Lincoln County made up of retired people who want to stimulate their intellectual interests in an atmosphere of shared learning. The annual membership dues of $75 cover 12 Tuesdays in fall and another 12 Tuesdays in winter starting January 2. Visitors are always welcome to attend a full day’s presentations for free. Sessions take place at Salishan Spa & Golf Resort, located east of the traffic signal light at Gleneden Beach. The Sept. 5 kick off session will begin with a coffee and cookies reception at 9 am. LIVE IT UP, AT THE DEATH CAFÉ Naming your café is a crucial part of the business plan. Starbucks went back to the classics with its “Moby Dick” reference, Stumptown drew upon Portland’s pioneer heritage, while Dunkin’ Donuts went for the informal vibe. But what were the founders of the Death Café thinking? John Underwood and Sue Brisby Reid started the first Death Café in London in 2010 as a way of breaking the Western taboo surrounding discussion of death. The pair though that people could speak freely if discussions were held in a social environment with tea or coffee and a sweet treat and with no pre-set agenda. The Death Café has reached the Oregon Coast, with a session scheduled for Friday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Newport 60+ Activity Center, 20 SE 2nd Street. “We live knowing that everything

dies,” said Newport Death Café facilitator Barbara LeBoss. “Like the sun, it’s a fact of life. And like the sun, we tend not to look right at it. Unless you’ve experienced a recent death, it’s probably not something you discuss. And as we know, death can happen at any age.” The format is flexible and straightforward without expectations — simply a group led discussion. The subject of death covers a wide range. from people’s spiritual and philosophical views, to fears or preparation. Guests are free to speak or simply listen. “The café isn’t the place where one goes for specific information about death nor is it a grief support or bereavement group,” LeBoss said. “It obviously doesn’t work for people who are uncomfortable discussing death.” Death Café is open to anyone aged 18 or older. For more information, call 541265-9617.

Running a new program Registration is now open for a Middle School Cross Country program for boys and girls of all athletic abilities in grades 6 through 8. Sponsored by the Lincoln City Recreation Department, the program is coached by Community Center director and 17-time marathon finisher Gail Kimberling. Practice will be held rain or shine on a variety of running routes — both on and off the road — to explore town and keep participants motivated. There will also be at least four meets, offering a variety of fun and challenging courses. Parents are responsible for transportation to all away meets, however some bus transportation might be available. The cost is $35

per student and includes a sweatshirt. Practices will be held after school Monday through Thursday, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Taft 7-12’s Voris Field. For more information, call the Lincoln City Community Center at 541-994-2131 or stop by and register at 2150 NE Oar Place.

Weed like some help The Nature Conservancy is looking for volunteers to join a work party at Cascade Head Preserve just north of Lincoln City on Saturday, Sept. 9. Volunteers will be gathering seeds from native grassland species for future conservation work, as well as pulling out invasive weeds. The coastal promontory provides critical habitat for native prairie grasses, rare wildflowers, the threatened Oregon Silverspot butterfly and the Cascade Head catchfly. The work party includes a four-to-five-mile roundtrip

hike with elevation gain and might require volunteers to hike off trail and stand on uneven ground while working. Participants should bring hiking shoes, a daypack, lunch and snacks, a full water bottle, layers of clothing, raingear, a hat and sunscreen. Those who have work gloves should bring them, although some pairs will be available to borrow. Registration is required. For more information or to register, call 503-802-8100, email orvolunteers@tnc.org or call the alternate contact, Debbie Pickering, at 541994-5564.

A fin day for a run Registration is now open for the inaugural Pelican Brewing Salmon Run, set to take place in Tillamook on Saturday, Sept. 23, offering 5- and 10-kilometer routes. The timed race will start and finish at Pelican Brewery & Tap Room, with runners setting out at 10 am and following a scenic race course through town, followed by a post-race bash at the brewery featuring tours, live music and more. A portion of the proceeds from every race registration

will go directly to the Salmon SuperHwy project, which aims to restore access to almost 180 miles of blocked habitat throughout six major salmon and steelhead rivers of Oregon’s North Coast. “Pelican Brewing is proud to support the Salmon SuperHwy Project and since becoming aware of the project last year, we have been looking for more ways to increase awareness and raise funds”, says Jim Prinzing, CEO Pelican Brewing. “We started

that effort by creating Five Fin West Coast Pilsner, a beer we designed specifically for the SSH, and now we are really excited to host the Pelican Salmon Run to raise money and educate more folks about the need.” Everyone who registers for the race receives an official race shirt and an official race pint glass. Runners aged 21 or older will receive a pint of Five Fin West Coast Pilsner while those under 21 will be treated to a pint of Pelican Brewing

Root Beer. Registration for the 5k is $40 through August 31 and $45 through September 21. Registration for the 10k is $45 through August 31, and $50 through September 21. The race also offers free entry for children aged five and younger, with no drinks or t-shirt included. To register, go to pelicansalmonrun.com. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/ PelicanBrewingSalmonRun.

The fruits (and creams) of their labor Fruit pies, cream pies and more will be on offer this Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Yachats Ladies Club hosts its annual Labor Day Weekend Pie Social. The event will feature a wide selection of pies made by club members or auxiliary — ranging from berry, peach and cherry to lemon

meringue, pumpkin, banana cream and cherry cream cheese. Some sugar-free and gluten-free options will also be available. Slices are a generous sixth of a pie and are $4 each. Huge brownies are $3 apiece, with ice cream available for a dollar more. Coffee and tea will be served as well.

To-go boxes mean guests can eat their pie and have some for later, too. The event will take place at the Yachats Ladies Clubhouse, 286 W 3rd Street, running from 11 am until 3 pm or all the pie is gone, whichever comes first. For more information, call 541-547-3205.

Enjoy some natural cycles Go with the ebb and flow on the Yaquina River Road Story & photos by Gretchen Ammerman

A

F  TODAY

lthough I’d never argue against the notion that the ocean provides a nice view, no matter which part you’re looking at, it’s all pretty… oceany. For a view with some variety, you can’t beat the everchanging vistas provided by places where the ocean meets up with a river. And one of the best ways to take in the sights with your two eyes is on two wheels. A great bicycle ride on the central coast starts along the Yaquina Bay, formed by the meeting of the Yaquina River and the Pacific Ocean and accented by an iconic art deco bridge completed in 1936. The bay is deep enough to accommodate large vessels, including recently welcomed NOAA research ships, and others that travel up the river to the historic logging town of Toledo. Following the river as it snakes from the bay just south of Newport to Toledo is the Yaquina Bay Road, from which visitors can experience changing tides. Low tides expose shoals, some bare and some covered in marsh plants. Herons and egrets feed in the exposed sections and, once a year, visiting geese hide goslings among the marsh grasses. The experience is made even better by the consistent shoulder on both sides of the road, providing a safer alternative to many cycling routes in the area. Riding along the river includes one of the best fueling stops for people that enjoy mollusks — fresh locally harvested oysters from Oregon Oyster Farms, whose oyster beds you can see along the ride. Though an historically productive area for oysters, the “discovery” by westerners in the mid 1800s caused the area to be over-harvested, and the local bivalves were gone by the early 1900s. A few attempts to introduce other species failed, until 1968 when a group, including that plucky doyen of serving seafood, Mo Niemi (of Mo’s fame), created a successful research project at the Hatfield Marine Science Center and revived the now thriving industry.

More of the history of the Yaquina River area is described on the informational signs dotting the road during your ride, including one at the site of the former town of Oysterville. If you need refueling of the more hoppy type, the Mad Dog Country Tavern is located just past the Sawyer’s Landing Marina and RV Park. The tavern is a great place to meet locals and has 13 beers on tap. For those that like to leave the technology at home, the road has well-maintained mile markers, but there is also another way to track your distance. Newport is one of the few places in the country to install permanent markers for their annual marathon. If you are considering tackling the distance, this is a great way to preview the route of this popular Bostonqualifying race. If you don’t mind some climbing, start the ride by parking at the Yaquina Bay State Recreation area and head toward the bay. The first part of the ride will take you past the historic coast guard station, then along the Newport’s working waterfront and along the marina on a very nice wooden walkway. After the marina, ride on the regular road past the Embarcadero Resort and over a small hill, where you will see the beginning of the road shoulder, which continues almost to Toledo. At the final approach to Toledo, there is a short hill without shoulders, but if you’re up to the challenge, you can ride all the way into town and take a rest at the well-done outdoor railroad museum. Riding all the way to Toledo and back to the park is about 27 miles, but you can turn around at any point to shorten the ride. Other alternatives are parking along the Bay Road, or starting your ride in Toledo. I’ve been on the road at dawn and dusk, ridden through fog, battled wind and even occasionally gone out on one of the rare coastal days hot enough to make for a sweaty ride. I’ve learned which spots have resident deer (one house in particular is oddly popular with the ungulates) and exactly where the public restrooms are. (The Port of Toledo day use area at mile marker 10, and at the railroad museum). But the one thing I never know is what the day will be like, which is the best part about it.

ABOVE: Wildlife abounds on the peaceful stretch of river. BELOW: Jesse Zulaica and Stephanie Simmons on the Yaquina River Road

For the TODAY

t has been 24 years since a small group of accomplished artists organized the first Toledo Art Walk, inviting residents, visitors, art collectors and other artists to view their open studio work. The first few years drew respectable crowds eager to hear the founding artists talk about their passion, inspirations and techniques. Art Walk became a defining event in Toledo’s history when it expanded to three days, and is now a significant part of the Labor Day Weekend celebrations. The landscape of downtown Toledo represents a fusion of art and industry. Rows of city blocks are littered with galleries representing the traditional, eclectic and multimedia art forms. Shops, restaurants and small businesses line Main Street with the Georgia Pacific mill providing the backdrop for this community of 3,200 residents. The Yaquina River winds languidly within the city limits. Art Walk chairperson Judy Gibbons said this year’s event will see 30 artists showing their work in 10 different locations from 10 am to 5 pm each day from Saturday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 4. A self-guided walking tour map is available through the Yaquina River Museum of Art. Maps of participating locations can also be found in galleries throughout town as well as online at www.toledoartwalk.com. “We will have paintings, sculpture, original prints, wood carving, clay, jewelry, textiles, photography and fused glass,” Gibbons said. “Come visit with the artists and learn about their work first hand.” Art Walk is all about engaging with the artists, even purchasing art directly. But purchases aren’t mandatory and all exhibits are free of charge. A Founder’s Show at the Toledo Public Library will feature the work of Michael Gibbons, Ivan Kelly and Douglas Haga, the three participants in the inaugural 1993 event. The Toledo Arts Guild will sponsor demonstrations and talks each day at their location in Union Hall.

“Lynx” by Ivan Kelly

The Vicarage House Museum will be open from noon to 3 pm each day of the Art Walk. Select artists will speak at 1 pm daily in the Garden where hosts Michael and Judy Gibbons invite all to enjoy a complimentary glass of Oregon wine and refreshments. A selection of Michael Gibbons’ original oil paintings will be on display and for sale. The downstairs signature Gallery will be open and offering a 31-percent discount on all reproductions, reflecting the gallery’s 31 years in business. A special feature of the Toledo Art Walk is the 4th Annual Plein Air Show in the Yaquina River Museum of Art’s 1887 Old School House exhibit space on 151 NE Alder Street. This is a popular event which showcases the work of painters who create their work onsite outdoors. “The coastal weather is generally not conducive to painting outdoors,” Judy Gibbons said. “The 14 artists who registered for this show had three months to work on their paintings in the designated area of the Yaquina Watershed.” Jurors of Entry Michael Gibbons, Steve Beck and Colleen Caubin will make the first cut decision. Toledo’s Ivan Kelly is serving as the Juror of Awards and cash prizes will be given to the winners. This year’s plein Aar artists are from throughout Oregon — Jacksonville, Newport, Portland, Newberg, Gresham and Powell Butte — as well as Scottsdale, Arizona. The show will be up through the month of September. This year the Oregon Coast Children’s Theatre/Oregon Coast Children’s Center for the Arts is sponsoring two workshops for children and youth during the Toledo Art Walk. The “Wee Folk Workshops” are free and held at Olalla Center & Flowerree Community Center, located in the former Mary Harrison Elementary School at 321 SE 3rd Street. The “Fairy Houses” workshop is for groups of two to three, to include one adult. Preregistration is required on a first-come-firstserved basis. Participants will create up to 10 “Fairy Houses” will be built in two-to-threehour sessions. The second workshop is open to individuals who wish to make a “Fairy Door.” Contact Lawrence Adrian at occt. youthartprograms@gmail.com or call 503-8010603.

Art in the spotlight “Buoy Oh Buoy” by Catherine Hingson

Some colorful language Impressionist painter Catherine Hingson will be the guest speaker at the Coastal Arts Guild’s Thursday, Sept. 7, lunch meeting in Newport. Hingson’s work includes large, colorful, impressionistic oil paintings of the Pacific Northwest, as well as smaller pieces in watercolors and pastels. “Everyone has been given some kind of gift,” she said, “and mine is the ability to manipulate colors using oils, watercolors and pastels to create expressive pictures.” Hingson is a member of the Artist’s Co-op Gallery and the Artists’ Studio Association, both in Lincoln City, the Yaquina Art Association in Newport, and her art can be seen in these locations. She also teaches art classes at Lincoln County Community College and conducts local workshops. Thursday’s lunch meeting will run from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Newport Visual Arts Center, 777 NW Beach Drive. Hingson will speak at noon. For more information and an invitation to attend, call Carol Deslippe at 541-2652624.

LABORS OF LOVE This Labor Day weekend will see the Yachats Arts Guild unveil its Fall Show, featuring watercolors, oils, acrylics and photography as well as cards, prints and ceramic tiles. From Saturday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 4, guests at the Yachats Commons can admire more than 20 framed works, all created by residents of the Central Oregon Coast. The Yachats Arts Guild began in 2007 with seven founding members and is now 18-strong. The guild has an ongoing display at the Yachats Public Library and members’ art also can be seen in local galleries, restaurants, book stores and gift shops. The show will be available to view from 10 am to 4 pm each day of Labor Day Weekend at 441 Hwy. 101 N. For more information, find the Yachats Arts Guild on Facebook.

The latest Spotlight show from the Yaquina Art Association will showcase work by photographer JerriLynn Woolley, watercolor artist Ann Nicholson and acrylic painter Josephine Allen. JerriLynn Woolley is a local photographer who loves to capture images of the coast in all its moods. She loves sunrises and sunsets, boats in the bay, bridge, lighthouses and the shore. Woolley will be showcasing some of her new images from along the Oregon Coast as well as some from the Southwest, where she spent several weeks this past fall and spring. Ann Nicholson has been selling her work at the Newport and Yachats farmers markets for the past 16 years. Before diving into watercolors, she was known for her baskets, made from local materials, and her colorful, acrylic painted pots. In this exhibit, she will show will be a combination of past and recent watercolor originals alongside acrylic paintings on canvas. “I love both mediums, although different,” she said, “because they enable me to express my love of color and shape.” And on the gallery pedestals, visitors will see work by Josephine Allen, who works in a wide variety of mediums, including acrylic painting, china painting, watercolors, clay art, colored pencil, pastels, photography, mixed media, fiber arts, basket weaving and jewelry making. In addition to her paintings of dogs, Allen will also be showing small, original painted pieces and photography as well as clay art and jewelry. The show will be available to view through Friday, Sept. 8 at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery, located at 789 NW Beach Drive in Nye Beach. Hours of operation are 11 am to 5 pm every day until Labor Day, and 11 am to 4 pm thereafter.

TO CELEBRATE OUR

30TH ANNIVERSARY 541-994-4453 3412 SE Hwy. 101 in Lincoln City Across from Christmas Cottage

The Lincoln City Cultural Center will reverberate with thumping Celtic fusion this Sunday, Sept. 3, courtesy of young Irish folk band Ruaile Buaile, stopping off at the Oregon Coast on their first US tour. Ruaile Buaile, pronounced roolya boolya, is Gaelic for commotion and this dynamic 4-piece band certainly lives up to the name, playing a high-energy mix of traditional Irish, Bluegrass, country and Americana music. Hailing from Offaly in the Irish midlands, the foursome of Niall Kelly, Arthur Stones, Jack Godley and Shane Lynam have gone from being considered a highly thought-of local act, to a sought-after band throughout Ireland and beyond. They have played before 90,000 people at Kansas City Irish Fest, travelled extensively through all corners of the US, and entertained throughout Europe and the Middle East. Back home in Ireland, they are encouraging young musicians to play and to enjoy traditional Irish and folk music. They recently were invited to the Dáil, or Irish parliament, to perform with some of Ireland’s leading talent in an effort to establish a quota of Irish music to be played on the national broadcasting stations. Ruaile Bualie’s debut album, “Commotion,” helped the band transition from isolated appearances to steady gigs. Their second recording, “This Very Moment” has helped introduce them to an even wider circle of fans, as they tour the world with their own style of high-energy, ground-thumping, Celtic beats. Playing drums, banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass and cajón, combined with a little Irish charm and

flare, these four young award-winning musicians are setting the pace. Sunday’s concert will start at 7 pm, in the auditorium of the cultural center at 540 NE Hwy. 101, with doors opening at 6:30 pm. A selection of Northwest beers and wines, sodas and waters, and Mountain Man savory snacks will be sold before the show, and during intermission. Tickets, $20 in advance and $22 at the door, are available at the center box office, by calling 541-994-9994 or online at lincolncityculturalcenter.org.

Bold = Minus Tides. Tide tables are for recreational use. If you’re piloting the “Costa Concordia II” in front of your college roommate’s oceanfront bungalow at Otter Crest or Cape Lookout, talk to a harbormaster. Tide info courtesy tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. If you discover a seal pup or other stranded marine animal on the beach, do not approach, touch, or pour water on the animal. Instead, call 800-452-7888. Keep dogs leashed and far from all marine mammals. Japanese Tsunami Debris Info: Information on significant marine debris sightings on the coast can be reported to the NOAA Marine Debris Program at DisasterDebris@noaa.gov.
