from the editor As regular readers know all too well, assistant editor Quinn is no stranger to a camera lens. Whether he’s learning to swim, cavorting on the beach or just minding his own business while eating an ice cream, the golden-coiered lad is to be found, almost without fail, on this very page every week. Sharp-eyed readers will also have spotted that the devious scrap manages to inďŹ ltrate other pages on occasion, popping up in stories about everything from beach cleanups to farmers markets and art classes. So this week, in an attempt to redress the balance in favor of folks whose do

Clean up at the coast Registration is now open for the annual SOLVE Beach & Riverside Cleanup, which will see Oregonians clean up hundreds of miles of beaches, rivers, parks and neighborhoods before fall rains wash debris into storm drains and out to sea. Set for Saturday, Sept. 24, the event includes more than 100 projects, including

46 beach cleanups along the coast. Most cleanups run from 10 am to 1 pm but times vary by site. SOLVE CEO Maureen Fisher said the cleanup gives people of all ages the chance to help tackle the serious threats of diminishing wildlife habitat, invasive plants and litter. “Whether you live

along a waterway or in the middle of a city, the Beach & Riverside Cleanup gives Oregonians the chance to make a positive difference in their community,” she said. “This event is a wonderful opportunity to give back to this great state we call home.” For a list of projects, go to solveoregon.org or call 503844-9571 x332.

Get within spitting distance The Audubon Society of Lincoln City birders will be heading north this Saturday, Aug. 13, for a walk along Bayocean Spit on Tillamook Bay. Led by Jack Hurt and Mark Elliot, the trip will give participants the chance to see a variety of migrating shorebirds as well as species that live year-round in the dunes and forest. No prior birding experience is required and binoculars and

guidebooks will be provided, but walkers should dress for varied weather. The group will meet in the Bayocean Spit parking lot at 9 am. From Highway 101 in Tillamook, turn west on 3rd Street/Three Capes Scenic Loop and go three miles to Bayocean Spit. Turn right and follow the gravel road 1.5 miles to the parking lot. For more information, call 541992-9720. Audubon Society of

Lincoln City offers free birding field trips with experienced trip leaders on the second Saturday of most months during the year. Beginning birders are welcome. Binoculars and guidebooks are available for those who don’t have their own, and carpooling is usually an option. For a list of upcoming field trip http:// lincolncityaudubon.org/ calendar.html.

DO A TOUR OF BEAUTY

A warm welcome and farmto-table shopping will be on offer this Saturday, Aug. 13, when farms open their gates for the annual Yachats River Valley Farm Tour. The self-guided tour takes in seven working farms along the idyllic Yachats River, producing everything from flowers and ornamental plants, fruit and eggs, to llamas, peacocks and grass-fed beef. Farms will be open from 10 am to 4 pm, with some welcoming visitors with hot coffee, cool drinks and baked goods. The farms are all arrayed along the scenic Yachats River Road, with each participating site marked with signs and balloons. A tour map with more information on each farm is available at the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center in downtown Yachats or online at www.yachats.org/ Yachats_River_Valley_Farm_ Tour_2016.pdf. Yachats River Road is narrow and winding, so drive carefully and watch out for cyclists.

We all know pigs can’t fly. But that doesn’t stop them trying every year when the Tillamook County Fair comes to town. At the center of the fair, the world-famous Pig-N-Ford races see intrepid competors battle it out for the coveted title by racing their vintage Model T Fords around the track while clasping a goodsized sow under their arm. The Pig-N-Fords began as a lark, when two farmers were chasing a runaway pig in their ramshackle rides. They decided it would be a fun event for the county fair, which hosted its first race with 10 cars in 1925. Some of those same cars, passed down through families or sold to close friends, are still on the track today. Even this long history makes the Pig-N-Ford races a mere whippersnapper when compared to the Tillamook County Fair itself, which is celebrating its 125 year of family-friendly fun, with a slate of live music, horse racing, carnival activities,

Consider Saturday booked Children’s authors will gather in Lincoln City this Saturday, Aug. 13, for the inaugural Oregon Children’s Book Festival at the Oceana Family Literacy Center. The event will also feature author readings, story telling, an acting troupe, art projects and activities like face painting and a “book walk.” “The festival is free and aimed at the whole family,” center director Vickie Meneses said. “It will offer a good chance for kids to have fun as well as stock up on books for the rest of the summer and the beginning of school.” Oceana Family Literacy was founded in 2010 to provide reading and writing training for students ranging from preschoolers to adults. It also offers GED preparation, with students learning in small classes or with tutors one-to-one. “Literacy is the key to everything a person wants to do in life,” Meneses said. “Our aim is to help our students reach their goals, however daunting the task may seem to them.” The festival will run from 10 am to 4 pm at 561 SW 29th Street in Lincoln City. Turn east off Hwy. 101 on to SW 29th Street and follow the road to the end. For more information, call Meneses at 541-9211865.

LINCOLN CITY’S COLD STONE CREAMERY OFFERS CUSTOMERS A SWEET DEAL When it comes to ice cream, Cold Stone Creamery feels you should never have to compromise. Want sorbet with rainbow sprinkles? Done. Peanut butter batter with a swirl of fudge? No problem. Sweet cream topped with M&Ms? Would that be medium or large? “What makes us great is that customers can get any different combination of what we offer,” said Mindy Grover, who together with her husband, Don, owns the store in Lincoln City’s Lighthouse Square. “That way people get exactly what they want.” In addition to flavors ranging from strawberry, chocolate and mint to cake batter and cotton candy, customers can also choose from the tempting menu of combinations that can be found in any Cold Stone store — such as “Apple Pie A La Cold Stone,” made with French vanilla ice cream, cinnamon, graham cracker pie crust, apple pie filling and caramel. Other signature creations include, for James Bond fans, “The Pie Who Loved Me,” made with cheesecake ice cream, Oreo cookies, graham cracker pie crust and fudge; and the “Coffee Lovers Only,” made with coffee ice cream, roasted almonds, Heath bar and caramel. And ice cream fans should keep a lookout for a special flavor that originated right here in the Lincoln City store — “Apples and Cinnamon,” invented by Don and still carried periodically. “It’s not often new items get added and there are lots of rules about it,” Mindy said, “but ours made it in, so it can now be found at any Cold Stone in the country.” Mindy said that in every item, from the ice cream to the house-made waffles and cakes, freshness is key. “In the summer, we are making ice cream daily,” she said “That’s what makes us different, that’s what makes us wonderful.” Those already familiar with the company are aware of the signature item in each store, the frozen granite countertop that keeps the ice cream cold while decadent additions are mixed upon it, ensuring bursts of flavor all the way to the bottom of the cup or cone. Berries, brownies, cinnamon, coconut, M&Ms, Oreos and chocolate in various forms are just a smidgen of the options you have for dressing your dessert. Another option at the Lincoln City Cold Stone Creamery are cakes, made with a special

flair. “We custom-make cakes out of anything in the store,” Don said, adding that Cold Stone is the only store in town that offers edible images. Mindy said customers can pick from a book full of images at the store or email a picture of their own, which the crew can then transfer on to the cake. The Grovers don’t stop at making the town a little sweeter; they are involved with charitable organizations as well, both as part of the Cold Stone franchise family and also independently. “We just did a fundraiser for drug-free grad night,” Mindy said. “We try to support the high school as much as we can because many of our crew members go or have gone there. We also support many other charitable organizations.” And this year the store is taking part in a new, franchise-wide fundraiser for “Best

Buddies,” which works to foster better living situations for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Stickers designed by the artist Keith Haring will be sold at the store during August, with all proceeds going to the nonprofit. The couple is nearing their 10th year owning the Lincoln City Cold Stone, and they are still very much enjoying it. And the answer to the inevitable question as to whether they have grown tired of eating ice cream after almost a decade of unrestrained access? “I probably eat less now than I did before we

owned it,” Don said. “But I still eat it plenty.” The Lincoln City Cold Stone Creamery is located in Suite 138 of Lighthouse Square, 4157 NW Highway 101. Summer hours are 11 am to 10 pm daily. For more information, call 541-9965500 or go to coldstonecreamery.com.

Extreme temperatures and unpredictable results are all in a day’s work for acclaimed clay artist Jack Walsh, the star of the latest exhibit at Lincoln City’s Chessman Gallery. Walsh’s solo exhibit will open on Friday, Aug. 12, with a public reception from 5 to 7 pm, offering guests the chance to view his pleasing and provocative combination of pottery and sculpture. Wood-fired at extreme temperatures in a Japanese-style anagama kiln, Walsh’s creations combine the unpredictable and chaotic nature of wood firing and the mysteries of weathered objects in nature. Walsh discovered the unlimited expressive possibilities inherent in clay early in his life and has been dedicated to a deeper understanding of its natural tendencies throughout his career as a clay artist. In 1989, this desire for a deeper understanding of this chosen material led him to build his first kiln, using wood as the sole source of fuel to create finished pieces without applied glazes. Walsh liked the results of these early wood-firing efforts but it wasn’t until 1998, when he first fired in the anagama kiln of Elkton artist Hiroshi Ogawa that he felt that he had found the right atmospheric environment for his work. Walsh has continued to fire pieces in Ogawa’s kiln, pushing the parameters of the medium with each new creation. The show, which features many of Walsh’s recent works,

More than jazz-t good friends The Jazz at Otter Crest season will continue on Sunday, Aug. 14, with an afternoon concert featuring husband-and wife duo Mike Wofford on piano and Holly Hofmann on jazz flute. The couple will be playing together in the duo format, which they first previewed in March of 2016 at Mezzrow Jazz Club in New York. Born near Cleveland, Ohio, Holly Hofmann began playing standards with her father, a jazz guitarist, when she was five years old. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado, she was encouraged by jazz flutist Frank Wess and trombonist Slide Hampton to pursue a career in jazz flute. Hofmann began working with the legendary Ray Brown at New York’s Village Vanguard in the mid ’90s and later toured throughout the United States and Europe as a guest artist with Brown’s trio. Hofmann has toured extensively with pianist Bill Cunliffe and collaborated and performed with artists including Kenny Barron, Cedar Walton and John Clayton. In 2000, Hofmann married Wofford, who is something of a legend on jazz piano circles, having longtime associations as music director for the two most prominent jazz singers in history — Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. Early in his career, his first professional performances were with the legendary Lighthouse All-Stars and the bands of Teddy Edwards, Red Norvo, Chet Baker, Bud

Shank and Shorty Rogers. It was during this time that he appeared on his first jazz recordings, as well as recording his first albums as a leader. By the late 1960s, Wofford was a busy freelance session player in Los Angeles, playing on recording dates

and motion picture and TV soundtracks. He also became active as an arranger, writing for artists such as Sergio Mendes, the Mike Barone Big Band, Zoot Sims and the Benny Carter Orchestra. Wofford continues to be one of the most in-demand pianists in jazz, working with

artists including Charles McPherson, Kevin Mahogany and Kenny Burrell. Sunday’s concert will begin at 2 pm at the Oasis at Otter Crest, 301 Otter Crest Drive, Otter Rock. Tickets, $30, are available at www.jazzottercrest.com/ tickets.

Newport’s Nye Beach will erupt in a vibrant display of music and dance this Saturday, Aug. 13, as the Second Saturday Summer Celebration gets underway at Café Mundo. The celebration features a mixture of drumming and Native American flutes from the Thunder & Lightness Ensemble, which organizer Chandler Davis describes as “world beat percussion with a pinch of salt.” Davis said he and his crew are refreshed after their recent trip to the Oregon Country Fair and fired up to debut some of the new songs they have been working on for the upcoming Lincoln County Fair. “It’s our usual unique blend of traditional and indigenous World Beat percussion along with the amazing harmonies of the Native American flutes featuring Terry Filer, who is celebrating the beginning of

her fifth year of performing with Thunder & Lightness,” he said. “She has also been a star of the annual Waldport Native American Flute Concerts for two years running, and she will be providing the beauty and the balance for our highenergy Lincoln County Fair 90-minute set this year.” The celebration takes place in the courtyard at Café Mundo, 209 NW Coast Street, which offers full outside food and beverage service. Light percussion toys are always available to encourage audience participation. Dancers, jugglers, hula hoopers, jesters and clowns of all ages are encouraged to join in on stage or in the courtyard. Drummers and other musicians are welcome to sit in by prior arrangement and should contact Davis at chandler@chandlerdavis.com or 541-272-4615.

Brazilian-style jazz will come to the Lincoln City Cultural Center on Thursday, Aug. 18, with a performance by Batida Diferente. Led by New York-based composer and saxophonist Laura Dreyer and Portland jazz pianist Kerry Politzer, the quintet is named after a classic song of crossover bossa nova by Durval Ferreira. The song, which translates as “A Different Beat,” was made famous by the Sergio Mendes Trio’s 1964 recording, “The Swinger From Rio,” but has also been recorded by many other jazz greats. Dreyer is a vibrant, creative voice in the New York jazz scene whose original compositions combine lyrical melodies with jazz, Brazilian rhythms and funk. Her newest release, “Vida. Arte. Amor,” was recorded in Rio de Janeiro and is receiving rave reviews. A multiinstrumentalist, Dreyer is in great demand as a sideperson. Audiences have heard her in the bands of such diverse artists as Dr. Billy Taylor, Dom Salvador, Antonio Adolofo, The Diva Jazz Orchestra and many others. She has headlined at the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival and The Syracuse Jazz Festival, as well as New York City venues including The Blue Note, Fat Cat and The Antique Garage. Meanwhile, Politzer has been in the music business since the age of three, when she started picking out melodies on a toy piano. The following year, she started playing the real thing. After studying classical piano for 14 years and attending the

North Carolina School of the Arts, she entered the New England Conservatory of Music with the intention of becoming a classical pianist. However, after attending a jazz piano recital at the school, she fell in love with jazz. She got on the waiting list for jazz guru Charlie Banacos, studied performance and composition with him for

four years, and graduated with a degree in jazz piano performance. Politzer has released several albums and has performed with her group at venues including Cornelia Street Cafe, Wave Hill, Smalls, Rockwood Music Hall and the Kitano. Doors for the Aug. 18 concert will open at 6:30 pm, with the show beginning at 7 pm, 540 NE Hwy. 101. Tickets, $20 in advance or $22 at the door, are available at the box office, online at www. lincolncity-culturalcenter.org or by calling 541-994-9994. SCHEDULE FRIDAY, AUG. 12

6 pm – Royalty Crowning 7 pm – Grand Entry Saturday, Aug. 13 10 am – Parade 1 and 7 pm – Grand Entry

DANCING IN THE PARK The annual Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow will see dancers and dignitaries from many Tribal nations descend upon the Pauline Ricks Memorial PowWow Grounds in Siletz from Friday, Aug. 12, to Sunday, Aug. 14. The celebration, organized by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, will start at 6 pm on Friday with the crowning of this year’s Siletz Royalty, followed by the first Grand Entry at 7 pm, which will see all dance styles enter the arena.

After the Grand Entry, the public can join in the noncompetitive dancing. “I invite the surrounding communities to experience our pow-wow and learn about American Indian culture and dance,” said Buddy Lane, Tribal cultural education director and pow-wow coordinator. “Come join us at our annual celebration.” On Saturday, starting at 10 am, a parade will wind through downtown Siletz, featuring Tribal royalty, drummers,

dancers, equestrian units, vintage cars and floats. Parade registration forms are available on the Tribe’s website, ctsi.nsn.us, the Tribal administration building at 201 SE Swan Avenue in Siletz, or by contacting Lane at 541-4448230. Participants can also register on the morning of the parade at 8 am at the Tribal administration building. People who register after 9 am can still participate in the parade but cannot take part in the judging.

The parade will lead up to a Grand Entry at the pow-wow grounds at 1 pm, followed by an afternoon of competition dancing for youth and teens. Competition dancing will continue after the 7 pm Grand Entry with Golden Age and adult categories and the finals for youth and teens. On Sunday, Aug. 14, the final day of the pow-wow, a Grand Entry will take place at noon. This session will end with awards for the Golden Age, adult, teen and youth category

winners. Prizes range from $25 to $500. A variety of food and Native arts and crafts and jewelry will be offered for sale by more than 50 vendors on the pow-wow grounds. “We encourage everyone to come and see the variety of vendors at our annual summer pow-wow,” Lane said. “Many facets of indigenous America are represented both in craft and food. There’s something for everyone here.” A free shuttle will be

available from various parking lots in Siletz to the pow-wow on Government Hill. Signs will be posted. Parking is extremely limited at the pow-wow grounds, so the shuttle is the best way to get there. This alcohol- and drug-free event is free. Guests should listen carefully to the pow-wow announcer, who will tell people when it is ok to take photos. The announcer will also explain the significance of the events taking place in the dance arena throughout the pow-wow.

Catching talent in a bottle The imaginative art of A.T. Ronan will be on display at Newport’s Yaquina Art Gallery in a show that opens on Saturday, Aug. 13. After retiring from Oregon Coast Community College in 2013, Ronan taught herself the tricky art of painting on glass. She went on to experiment with the process of dyeing paper with blackberries, coffee beans, tea leaves, vegetables and even spices to apply to the painted vases and bottles. Ronan then made a beach discovery that gave her an “a-ha” moment. She found roses that were preserved by the seawater. She attached the flowers to a small glass vase and, as if by magic, they kept their color. Thanks to this discovery and the

encouragement of her husband, Ed, and many friends, there was no stopping the creative flow of ideas. In her quest to create abstract, colorful, fluid art, Ronan uses a palette packed with iridescent blues and vibrant purples along with cheerful yellow. She accents her creations with seaweed, flowers and leaves, eggshells, tiny glass beads, sea shells, cut glass, silk, tile pieces, paper and other things that catch her eye. “Pursuing art gives me an endless joy of learning,” Ronan said. “It’s vast, like the ocean meeting the sky.” Ronan’s work will be on display through Friday, Aug. 26, available to view from 11 am to 5 pm daily at the gallery, 789 NW Beach Drive.

SAND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT Let your imagination run wild at the Taft sandcastle contest in Lincoln City Patrick Alexander Oregon Coast TODAY

Lincoln City will experience its annual building boom this Saturday, Aug. 13, when the Annual Sandcastle Contest returns to Taft Beach for its 39th year. Organized by the Bay Area Merchants Association, the contest invites people of all ages and skill levels to let their imaginations run riot a stone’s throw from Mo’s Restaurant on the shores of Siletz Bay. And while the sandcastles get top billing, entrants can build pretty much whatever they want and still stand a chance at walking off with some loot, with prizes on offer in a host of categories from Best Cat to Best Plumbing Fixture (see sidebar). Registration begins at 11 am on the dock next to Mo’s on SW 51st Street, with an entry fee of one or more cans of food per entrant, which will be donated to the Lincoln City Food Pantry. All participants must register before starting to build, in order to prevent anyone getting an unfair head start. “I think the tide will help us out this year,” said organizer Teresa Engebretson — a 9:16 am high tide will still be receding when builders are staking out their sites. As beach builders toil on their sandy creations, they can enjoy live music from local DJ Bret Lucich, who sets up his sound system on the Taft Dock. Judging will take place at 4 pm, with winners announced shortly after. This year’s judges include an expert on the topic of building codes — Lincoln City Mayor

Don Williams, who will join a team of event sponsors and other volunteers who will scrutinize entries ranging from castles and mermaids to tikis and chowder heads. Anyone struggling for inspiration can take a peek at the work of professional sand sculptor Jim Butler, who will be demonstrating his skills on the east side of Mo’s Restaurant. Butler will on hand throughout the day to offer hints and tips to his fellow builders. But contestants should not be too despondent if they can’t recreate Butler’s sand sorcery. That’s because Butler will be sculpting with sand that has been brought in especially for the occasion, donated by Morris Excavation. Unlike the smooth, tumbled grains found on Lincoln City’s steep beaches, the grains in this special-order sand are rough and angular — locking together more effectively for constructions that seem to defy gravity. But even if your own creation falls victim to the midday dryout and crumbles to dust before your very eyes, you still have a chance of taking home a prize. Organizers will be raffling off three of Lincoln City’s iconic, colorful glass floats at the end of the day. And a small team of surveyors will be making their way through the field of contestants, collecting details about where everyone is visiting from. The first 100 people to complete the short survey will be entered into a raffle for a swag bag packed with items donated by local businesses.

The fine print

Entries must be built using only sand, water, shells and other natural beach material found on the day. Hand tools and forms of any sort may be used in the construction process but may not support the structure. Power tools are not allowed. This is an amateur competition; professional sand artists are disqualified from winning prizes.
