GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR OUR PATIENTS We are often asked to support our patients and their families, at times when they need us the most. Helping our NHS go further at The James Cook University Hospital and Friarage Hospital

We don’t always share these things to respect their privacy but one example was when we transformed one of our gardens at James Cook into a beautiful venue for the wedding of one of our patients who was sadly on end of life care. With less than 48 hours’ notice we managed to pull out all the stops for them. But we couldn’t do this without your kind donations and the support of local businesses.

CREATING FAMILY ROOMS

TRANSFORMING OUTDOOR SPACES FOR PATIENTS AND STAFF

We enhance patient care and the wellbeing of our incredible NHS staff by funding initiatives over and above what the NHS would routinely provide.

HOW WE’VE HELPED

Whether it’s state of the art equipment, pioneering research or increased staff training, we’re committed to helping our local NHS go further!

NEW EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT SPECIFICALLY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE Our rainbow appeal raised over £100,000 for James Cook’s new emergency department for children and young people. The new facility provides emergency care to more than 25,000 patients a year, covering all age ranges from neonates up to 18 years. Through your donations we were able to purchase equipment such as refrigerated cots, sensory equipment, therapeutic toys and a dedicated mental health room. We were also able to kit out a breastfeeding room, invest in ventilators and resus trolleys, and make the department a much more welcoming and less scary place for children.

BUILT THE RENAL DAY UNIT AT JAMES COOK HOSPITAL With the help of our fantastic supporters, we raised an amazing £650,000 to develop a new renal day unit at James Cook Hospital. The new unit provides more than 3,000 outpatient appointments every year, and this new unit will ensure outstanding care is delivered in a first class facility bringing the trust’s specialist renal nurses together in one place.

Making the difference

Through donations we have been able to transform clinical feeling areas into more comfortable, calm, tranquil and relaxing spaces for relatives to take some time out from the ward. With pale green walls and artificial plants brightening up the spaces, as well as ambient lighting, comfortable chairs and sofas with cosy cushions, a book shelf and coffee making facilities, patients and their families now have a homely environment where they can spend precious time together. Lyndsay Wilson, spinal high dependency unit manager said, “Our Hospitals Charity have transformed our family room before, it just looked like a waiting room, “Sadly, with the nature of the work that we do, doctors sometimes have to break bad news to patients and their families and we thought it was important that they had a comfortable and inviting environment. Our Hospitals Charity have been amazing, we cant thank them enough!”.

Through generous donations we have been able to transform a number of gardens at our hospitals, including our neonatal, critical care, maternity and spinal injury gardens. When patients are taken out into the fresh air and surrounded by nature, even the most poorly patients benefit emotionally and physically. There is also an added benefit for relatives who are visiting and caring for their loved ones, as well as healthcare staff, who need to take a muchneeded break from the clinical environment - with its harsh lighting and limited views of the outside world. The development of our intensive care unit garden means patients can now be easily be wheeled out in their beds which they were unable to do before. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without generous donations - our patients and staff will be thankful for many years to come.
