4. Creating
Study of the context of the site this new library is located, expresses a topography which sloped towards a valley where a seasonal river flows. Looking at the elevation of the site context presents an architecture characterized by a series of buildings which seem to be layered/ stacked on top of each other as one proceeds above the elevation of the slope.
Another dimension we can appreciate in the Nyaregenge district is Kigalians thirst for open spaces and social interaction. This is manifesting in two enclaves;the CBD(known as the Imbuga City walk) and the Biryogo (known as the Biryogo car free zone). These recently introduced pedestrianized street have become a very integral in the Kigali culture
Hence the synthesis between this layered/ fragmented architecture , as well as the social dimension and the vision of a library that connects/ links the past to the presents produces a volume grouped according to the relationship of each programme namely :Discuss (which hosts most of the lively functions such as cafes, bookshop, open workstations), Play (which hosts creative activities such as the imaginarium, digital hub), Study(hosting the reading departments) and Research (which hosts the Rwandan Library forum as well as research labs for advanced learning) and is“Connected” by a central volume which links all the other programme creating an architecture that looks fragmented on the outside yet compacted/connected from within.
5. Followimng the levels predetermined by the site and context
6. The building finishes creating skylights withing the roof which is a reflection of the slop of the site
OURO-TAGBA OLIVER SAFUAT | ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 6
1. The footprint of the building is determined by a 5x5m grid and the programs
internal courts and access to views from within to the external landscape
the building sits on different levels
2. The floor levels are set following the topography of the site
3. As the form rise from the one base it subdivides into the different programmes

Sunlight Hour Analysis
Using LadyBug and HoneyBee in conjuction with Grasshopper, a microclimate of our site was extraxted and analysed. This helped informed some design decisions such as building orientation and shading
9:00 am 12:00 pm
3:00 pm
Using VELUX, we simulated the natural light within the sapces. This helped us optimatize the design in order to make adjustments allow natural light to reach the dark spaces within the project. Plan-wise the introduction of the voids not only serve as an architectural choice but allows daylight to penetrate through to the groundfloor level.
The analysis showed strong radiation from the east and west, which is quite predicatable as Rwanda is located on the equator. Hence this informs to implement design strategies to reduce the solar impact on the east and west facades

Location : Milan, Italy
Typology : Cultural Design

In the design of this auditorium, we follow the conditions of the site and keep the original school entrance and exit as the main entrance of the auditorium. The school, the gym and the auditorium are connected in series through a corridor. At the same time, through the transparent corridor, people are guided into the courtyard, so the green space in the site is activated.

alisa hotel
Location : Tema, Ghana
Typology : Hospitality design
Project : Professional
Task : Construction Drawings, Detailing
The Alisa Hotel intervention goes past a simple hotel design. “Modern meets port ” as a phrase is the merger of steel enginerring with contemporary interventions.
The creation of a public park frontage, correct building orientation, use of tropical weather design techniques, the use of timeless materials such as Dekton and Travertine stone are attempts to create the “Alisa Effect”.
The re-orientation of buildings in the correct direction back to the nostalgic days of the early Harbour District. The 50 bedroom hotel, houses a large double volume entry lobby, a double-volume 300 seater conference area, 4 boardrooms a 100 seater restaurant, 3 penthouse suites and 1 presidential suite. The facility also engages the public with a spa & sauna, tennis court, gym, swimming pool and sculpture/r elaxation garden at the back of the main hotel development. Further away from view is the service, maintenance and staff quarters where the hotel’s function is run from.

A special feature distingiushing this design from the other Alisa hotels is the push-and-pull limestone feature on the south and east facades of the hotel. The rectangular stone is an abstraction of the beige and green painted lines on the facade on most of Alisa’s other buildings. Here, we abtsracted, formalised and made the lines permanent with a lowmaintaenace aerated stone facade stating its permanence in the city. A renaissance to say Tema is capable of returening to its past glory but this time in a bolder, more audacious manner, one of Firmitas-UtilitasVenustas

Located in the south of Milan, the house number 47 on Via Palmeri is a residential building of 3 levels with an attic-built dating back to the 1920s. The current client came to the office with idea of converting the attic spaces into liveable studio apartments which would be rented out.
With renovation projects in Milan, city planning places emphasis on maintain the existing facades of building. Hence this project adopts the concept of addition and continuity externally. This is the in the repetition of the four openings present in at every level and a change in cladding of the attic spaces to place a subtle emphasis on distinction between the old and new. The four opens are floor to ceiling windows which simultaneously at as a balcony from within the spaces. These openings along with the existing structure being to shape the internal organisation of the spaces.
Internally, the attic is designed to accommodate two studio apartments. The 10x12m attic allows to fit the bedrooms of each apartment towards the opening with views to the activities tot the street and the living room on the first apartment towards the street and the other to the courtyard behind the residence. The spaces designed to makes the users aware of the attic by the exposed ceilings and light oak wooden floor finishes but is balanced out but the white walls to breathe life into the once dead space.

The concept for the design originates as a response to Ghanaian interior furniture. Initially called Blocks, a name coined from the phrase “everything is from a box” , the design task took into consideration the cost of initial furniture setup for young gradutes and early homeowners.
The design is based on the foundation of the essentials of interior furniture- Horizontal Surfaces, Vertical Surfaces and Storage. The initial concepts looked at the easiest and cheapest way of making a flat pack multipurpose product that champions affordability, simplicity, aethetics and firmsness.
Devoid of nails, screws or hinges , the product consists 4 stools and 2 benches with a combined storage voulme of about 0.4 cubic meters, a bed and table with a dressing mirror beneath. Odum, Birch Plywood and Walnust were all tested in the prototyping of the design- Each faling short by either weight, longevity, structural or cost limitations.
The final Cube Prototype C was finally made from Pallet Wood (White Pine). This wood works well Structurally, is the cheapest option and offered a greener solution as we recylced the pallet wood thrown away from the Tema Port. The table cover made in all white Corain forms dust, oil amnd waterproof surface for a wide range of possible users.
