Welcome to our 2nd Annual Genetic Sale hosted by Show Circuit Online Sales on February 28th. The Fall was full of ups and downs for us, both an operation and as a family. The Direction Fall Female Sale saw heights that we’ve only ever dreamed of accomplishing since we started on this journey. We witnessed incredible demand for our Simmental genetics by families that have been with us the past few years (and that we are incredibly thankful for). We also welcomed many new friendships into our program, and we couldn’t be more excited to have all of them onboard. Heritage our Herd Sire and AI bull’s first daughters commanded a $11,500 average in that sale. Sadly, we lost him to hardware in November - something we never saw coming. They say build your business around people you can trust and that treat you like family! We can’t say enough about the Schrag family, Corey Thomsen, and the entire crew at 605 Sires + Donors for trying to save and prolong Heritage while we were in Florida with family, as my dad was fighting cancer. Our 2022 ended rather tough. Just 11 days prior to Christmas as we lost the patriarch of our family to a short, yet hard fought, battle with such an awful disease.

My dad helped us put in a good portion of the fence on the place we now call home, just two Falls ago He was also able to see the humbling success we achieved this past Fall with our first calf sale. Losing someone that played such a strong part in who I am today has been the toughest thing I’ve ever gone through, and that my family’s ever gone through. We can’t thank our friends enough for the love and support they have shown us in this time.

The first Spring after moving to Brookings, I met Abbie. We began to build a cow herd and program, with a goal of finding functionally stout cattle with industry leading genetics. Those genetics are within the pages of the catalog before you and are the very root of The Direction we are headed.

These pages reflect the dedication we’ve put into acquiring the most influential genetics we can get our hands on, while sitting on the line between cattle that hold true to the fundamental things needed to be profitable and yet find success in the show ring. The building of cow families that can be held accountable has led us to a place where we are comfortable and confident in offering the opportunity to gather genetics that are and have been predictable and profitable.

It’s with great excitement that we have reached this point for our operation. We are humbled by the opportunity to offer you a chance to be a part of it, too! None of what we have accomplished to this point would be possible without the friendships and partnerships we’ve made these past ten years plus. We thank those of you who have helped us into success.

It also goes without saying, my best friend in life, Ben Scott,¬ and his family’s partnership means the world to us. He and I, throughout college, had an idea and dream of what we wanted to accomplish and build. We are still actively working toward those goals. We are grateful for the ride thus far! Embryos are sold in lots of 3. We guarantee one pregnancy, if embryos are placed by a certified technician. Some embryos are available immediately, and others will have different availability dates. All semen and embryos are stored at either Custom Livestock Solutions in Athens, Georgia; ABS in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Dandy Acres Enterprises in Pipestone, Minnesota, or 605 Sires + Donors in Marion, South Dakota. The cost of shipping embryos and semen falls on the buyer.

546 cemented her legacy this Fall with a trio of females that were in strong demand based on their quality alone! Her three heifer calves totaled$ 76,000 - commanding $36,000, $26,000, and $15,000 respectively. Lot 1 from the The Direction Fall Female Sale has already found many successes in the ORB Division in Texas for the Weems Family, while the other two are just gearing up to show! We think so highly of 546, we couldn’t help but offer 3 different mattings out of her. She comes from a long line of powerful Angus genetics. Ryan Berg and his family in Florence, SD have a Genetics by Design Angus Donor that doesn’t miss. A Next Step son, and 546’s maternal brother, sold for an evaluation of $60,000.00 to Werning Cattle Company – he’s known as RBM Two Step. SAC Conversation on the top side of 546 has built a predictable pedigree. To this point she has been extremely profitable for us, including a herd bull, and five heifer calves that have averaged $18,500.00 from four different matings!

It’s no secret that Werning genetics have been dominate for a long time. Show ring success and modern demand started with what has become one of the most consistent cows in the breed 8543. Very few chances exist to capture some of the first mattings of where it all started - 3028 is just that! A direct daughter of Lock and Load and 8543 and a flush mate sister to Bullseye, she is easily one of the most consistent generators of that mating alongside Angel that sits within the donor battery of JW Cattle. When we had the opportunity to grab partnership with RJ and Plamp, we jumped at it. We’ve been in love with Big Red since she was a calf. It is extremely hard to combine the amount of density and power into as sound and rugged skeleton as 3028. She’s truly unmatched that way. She’s the mother to Rose, the Donor Dam of Heritage whose first heifer calf crop averaged $11,500.00 - including a top of $36,000.00. Her daughters have found success as show cattle, and as donors from multiple operations including Tim Schaeffer, Pratt Family, Carr Family and us, alongside many others! Most recently a daughter by High Regard was Champion Simmental at Dixie Nationals and a granddaughter by Bankroll commanded $25,000.00 for 50% embryo interest in the Werning Cattle Company Production Sale! There truly aren’t many opportunities to grab hold of valuable and predictable Simmental genetics as 3028. Power is back in play and so it elevates the value of these featured matings!

I took a trip to RJ and Plamp’s two Falls ago to look through calves. Abbie and I were after purebred heifers that we could build another cow family around. We drove up on this direct daughter of Currency, and I knew that I had found what we were after. The kids call her Penny the Purebred, and we are going to take full advantage of the fact that for a pure she is perfect in her skeleton. Her front shoulder and knee has the correct bend and slope. Her hip is dead level and long, while her back leg is perfect in its build and stability. Sleek in her front end, and bold and massive in her body shape. She has the hard to see pieces and is backed by a prolific dam. Her maternal brother by Profit commanded over $20,000 at CK and Wager’s Production Sale. She had a maternal sister by Bankroll and Profit command premiums in RJ and Plamp’s Bred Heifer Sale this Spring. Penny is the only Currency daughter out of the now deceased Executive Order/Built Right donor that RJ, Plamp and Swanson owned together. As a first calf heifer her natural daughter commanded $15,000 in The Direction Fall Feamle Sale and has already found success for the Larson Family of South Dakota!

I took a trip to RJ and Plamp’s two Falls ago to look through calves. Abbie and I were after purebred heifers that We can’t think of a better way to make purebreds than to offer Bankroll embryos out of Last Call’s mother. Taking a ¾ female that is built perfect in her skeleton to as much pin width as you can cram in is a perfect recipe to make purebreds. Bankroll is sure to add a shot more power and keep the wheels. It’s sure to work, and we are pumped to have made them, especially with Last Call commanding $15,000 last year as the lead lot in this very sale!

A few years back, right after I moved to South Dakota, Ben and I ventured out to find a percentage female that could capture success in Georgia - and one that he could turn into a generating female for a basis of the cowherd down there. It was a rough Fall in South Dakota, but I ventured to Emery and found what I was looking for in a Loaded Up half-blood heifer calf with all the look and body you could come by! She was campaigned successfully by Lane Goodroe and was Champion Percentage Female at the Georgia National Fair! Ben turned her into a cow and we haven’t looked back. Multiple influences within the female base, this Loaded Up daughter isn’t like most. She’s good sized, smoothed muscled and perfect structured. Epic made perfect sense to mate her to create ¾ blood cattle that we think will be her best mating to date!

This Steele Force daughter is direct progeny of Gambles Shadoe 985. Going back to the famed Champion Hill Shadoe 2062, Y273 is rooted with maternal legends that decend from Angus royalty. Campaigned by Anna Scott, this female is out there in her look, perfect in her structure, and the quintessential half-blood mating that Simmental cattle are known for. These sexed IVF heifer embryos will result in 3/4 progeny that should be perfectly positioned to make purebred seedstock. Y273 has put mutliple daughers back into Wiregrass Cattle’s cowherd, and these embryos and the chance to purchase them is the next piece of her legacy.

Abbie and I ventured to Dennis Deppe’s two years ago and got a first-hand look at his sale offering. When 410, affectionately known as Faith, walked into the pen I texted Abbie, “We are buying that cow!” First Class himself needs no introduction when it comes to generating and high achieving Angus genetics! Faith is backed by a cow line that is rooted by Hyline Right Time 338 that will go down as one of the strongest maternal lines in the Angus breed. Faith herself is big in her kind, big in her pieces and bold in her pin width and rib cage! When I loaded 3028, 546, and 100 on the trailer to IVF to Broker, I loaded Faith too! I can’t wait to put these in myself. With the success 546 has brought us over the last few years, I decided to create some Conversation embryos too.

I’m a firm believer that Broker has and will continue to make a strong impact in the Simmental breed. This donor female has the all the right things he does and comes with a little extra. A few years back, Donny Begalka bought a bred heifer from Griswold that was sired by Double Good, a Cerveza son. That female is the donor dam to this one, and the mother to the high selling Simmental bull in Griswold’s sale this past Spring sired by Bankroll. This female is stout – stout skulled, stout boned, stout pinned. She comes with all the rib shape and flex you can ask for. These embryos sired by TRCC Pandemic should pay dividends and with all the donor cow backing and quality around them, they should prove to be predictable!

Lot 1 is the most recent acquisition to the donor battery here and another piece to a puzzle that we were after to make purebred seedstock! A direct daughter of Bankroll and out a Wheelman cow that originally was sold as choice by the Own Brothers in Missouri. 134B her mother was acquired by RJ a few years back for a little over $20,000.00 for half. She was bred up a little late, so these embryos won’t be available until later, but the way she’s built and with the quality Copacetic is generating this mating should be sure fire!

Heritage has proven that the decisions we’ve made over the last 10 years were right, and The Direction we took came full circle this Fall as his first round of daughters commanded an $11,500.00 dollar average, with a high seller of $36,000.00. The list of donor cows that he can be traced to are the root of fertility. 8543 needs no introduction for Simmental enthusiasts, 3028 has made her own mark as a direct daughter sired by Lock n Load, and Rose – who we lost –was sired by High Regard and throws another storied program with Yardley into the mix. Mating Rose to Relentless stacked 8543 and Utah again on the other side and built a pedigree that translated to a purebred Simmental bull that can be held accountable because he was built with focus and direction. First calves have averaged in the 70s and have all the presence and power you would ever want. Heritage, himself, was stout in his skull and jowl, extended through his front end, and his neck came right off the top of his shoulder blade built with slope and comfort. We had a rough Fall as we lost Heritage to hardware, something we couldn’t have seen coming. His legacy, though, will live on with the semen we have left! The three units being offered are the ONLY ones that will be offered at public auction for the next year! Predictable genetics are hard to find and here’s your chance to capture it!

Last Call

This Drs. Orders, we feel, highlights what we’ve been working on throughout the last 10 years. He is the result of our purchase from Werning Cattle Company in the Spring of 2021. His mother is exactly what I’m after for foundation cows. Her udder is perfect. Her feet and structural build is elite, and those things in relation to her pin width is truly unique. Last Call, being out of a first calf heifer and Werning’s sure fire calving ease bull, is sure to be calving ease positioned. He is truly elite in his build, rugged in the stoutness of his skeleton and good looking. We think he has all the things to make the next generation better. We are excited to be a part of it!

We had no intention on buying into a bull this Spring, but plans change! While I was at Griswold’s, I ran across an Angus bull I felt fit the cow herd we’ve built and something I knew we could trust to make the next generation better! It only made the acquisition more significant when we were able to form a partnership with Rob and Sheryl Vanhove – and so, we snagged “Diplomat”.Out of the famed CCC Saras Dream 5166 cow of Barry Nowatzke’s and sired by BNWZ Specialty, Diplomat is a 3/4 brother to BNWZ Dignity 8107 and full sib to the recently crowned Reserve Champion Female at The Atlantic National! Perfect is his skeleton, tall shouldered, and incredible in his body shape; we think he’s positioned to make cattle better. And with the prolific donors in his pedigree, he’s backed by female generating power.
