Carshalton Netball Club

Following a successful petition to Sutton Council, Carshalton Netball Club have been given the go ahead to help repurpose two of five Tennis Courts in Carshalton Park.

Netball has surged in popularity in recent years and a recent Sport England survey showed that a whopping 319,400 adults now play Netball fortnightly. Carshalton Netball Club in Surrey are just 50 of those adults who have picked up the ball and rekindled their love of Netball. Local resident, Mairéad Agnew, formed Carshalton Netball Club back in 2018 when she asked if anyone wanted to join her to play Netball, ‘just for fun’, in her local park. The response was overwhelming and highlighted an interest in casual, non-committal Netball. This relaxed approach has seen notable health and general wellbeing benefits for those playing as well as a greater sense of community to all involved. The team have been unable to find any outdoor, free to use courts to play on and have seen the opportunity to open up access to young girls and women to play Netball more casually. Their mission is to address this by having a free to use, full size Netball Court available to all. Whilst there are a great number of free to use Tennis, Basketball, Football and other sports courts across the Mairéad Agnew & Julie Smith who recently pitched to raise funds for the new court at Suttons version of Dragons Den, Sutton Soup.

borough the provision of free to use Netball courts does not match the growing desire to play the sport. After a very successful petition led by the Netball Team, Sutton council have granted permission to repurpose two of five Tennis courts in Carshalton Park however there is no budget to pay for this so the team are helping to fundraise. Here you can see the courts as they are now and an example of the redevelopment plans. The plans will not only include a free to use netball court but also a second multi-use games area for other sports including football and basketball. Depending on how much is raised the tennis courts will hopefully get a facelift too!! If you are a local resident or businesses and you can help donate any amount from £2 to £2,000 or indeed more, then please kindly donate via the Crowdfunding page below. You can keep up to date on the project or find out more via Carshalton Netball’s social media.
