CRUISING 101
Hi Gang:
Well, shows and cruises are happening again. Boy, were they missed! Summer is here, and the temps are in the 90s, so make sure cold water is available along with some shade. It’s the right thing to do. Also, remember that our hobby members are getting older. I know because I turned 70 this July (didn’t ever think I’d see that when I was in my 20s; to us then 40 was a “dinosaur”). So if at all possible, providing a handicap parking area at your event would be nice.
At one time I could walk “Summer Carlisle” twice in one day, including “The Hill.” Those days are gone. Today, I’d be lucky to make it to a bench.
We are all getting older and many of us can’t do what we used to. You know what they say about “The Golden Years.” Blah, Blah, Blah. I’m looking forward to some events coming up, such as the Riverview Park Cruise Night on July 30 in Pennsville, NJ. This is a great event, so get there early.
Another event I plan to attend to is an All GM Event at “Racks” in Turnersville, NJ. It takes place on Aug 8 and is hosted by The Hot Rod Garage. Finally I’d like to mention a cruise going on at a place where I kinda grew up — Fort Mott State Park in Pennsville. Rocky and his crew put on a huge show there every year. This one is set for Aug. 21.
Yep, it’s nice having events again. Remember, get your events listed. If you have a problem, we are there to help you. Call the office (302.655-6483) or me and we will do whatever we can, Plus, remember advertising pays for the mag.
See you at the cruises, if I can find a parking place!

II was fortunate enough to have been born at a time when I was able to see the development of the automobile from simply a mode of transportation to a personal statement.
Most cars in the late 1940s and early 1950s were rather conservative in their nature. Yes, there were guys out there were modifying their cars to go faster and look more unique, and there were some performance cars that the manufacturers made to “up” the horsepower from the so-called norm. But by the time I was a teenager in the mid to late 1960s, the evolution of the car seemed to take off big time and the horsepower race was combined with the introduction of the pony car and the all-out muscle car.
Suddenly these cars were spawning not only a new generation of vehicle but a new generation of car enthusiast. There were those whose car marquee camps suddenly made one a Bowtie, Mopar or Blue oval, guy or gal. Yes, these terms representing Chevy, Chrysler and Ford were now part of the new car owners and yes there were nicknames for Pontiac, Oldsmobile and other makes of rides, too.
The 1970s saw the fast and powerful rides it a decline as a result of insurance premiums and a gasoline crunch. It did not end the need for fast and cool, it set things in motion for the next phase. As we segue into the new world order of cars, performance and uniqueness is still available with those of us who cherish names like Challenger, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang. The other rides of yore have now been relegated to the books and articles of cars from yesterday.
So, as this senior looks at the next batch of new performance and personal rides we head into the age of the electric car. Well, I must admit that I am not fully sold on this type of motivation to propel a car, but it’s the next phase in the development in transportation. When one reads about legendary dragracers like Don Garlits piloting an electric rail dragster at nearly 200 miles per hour, it is seeing automotive history unfolding before our eyes and reminding us that we car enthusiasts have a lot of stories to tell in the “I remember when” phase of our lives.
When one looks at history, people doubted this new-fangled invention called the horseless carriage would replace the horse. Well, going from horses to electric cars (yes electric cars have been around for a long time, too) and seeing some of this development in our lifetime is really a special thing in our lives.
