ne day in the fall of 2013 I got a call from my buddy Greg Rager. Greg was the founding editor of Mopar Muscle magazine, and prior to that he had been the tech editor of one of its sister publications, Muscle Car Review. When Tom Shaw became the new editor of Muscle Car Review some years later, he and Greg forged a friendship that grew strong over time. I wrote several tech articles for Mopar Muscle during Greg’s tenure, and he knew I wanted a 1967 Plymouth GTX, preferably one with a 440 and a four-speed. Tom Shaw’s brother, Jerry, had such a car, although he had disassembled it decades earlier in anticipation of a restoration that never happened. When Jerry passed away suddenly in 2013, Tom sought to help Jerry’s wife, Rita, place Jerry’s car with an owner who would restore it properly. When Greg heard Jerry’s car was available, he called me immediately, and he gave me Tom’s number.

Friends Made through a Rusty Plymouth

By this time, I had met Randy, his wife Cheri, and Andrew when they brought their ’71 GTX to the All-Chrysler Nationals in Carlisle, Pa., but Rita and I had never met. There was also the last detail of the agreement between Rita and Randy that needed to be fulfilled — Rita had not yet driven Jerry’s car. And so it was that in June, Rita and I both met at the Lowes’ home. Randy and Cheri whipped up a delicious meal of barbecued ribs, potatoes, corn, and other mid-western staples. At the table on their back porch we talked, laughed, and shared stories. The next day, we took the GTX for a drive. Rita had brought the wooden box containing Jerry’s ashes, which seemed most appropriate. Randy drove first, then Rita, and then I took a turn behind the wheel. Everything about the GTX felt as it should. It drove well, stopped straight, and exhibited stellar road manners. When Randy stuck his foot deep into the carburetor, the car responded eagerly by emanating a loud induction moan from beneath the hood, lifting the front end slightly, and whisking us down the deserted rural two-lane road.
Jerry had dismantled several Belvederes and Satellites in the late ‘70s, and he selected only the best pieces from those cars to use on his GTX. He polished and refurbished these parts, and he stored them in an unused bedroom in his father’s home. In addition, the original engine was sitting all apart in a friend’s shop a few miles away. The original transmission and rear axle were still in the car.
components on our GTX, and I even shipped a few spare parts to him. Randy and Andrew also networked with other ’67 GTX owners, and soon parts began arriving from all over the country.
A couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, Rita called me and said she couldn’t go through with the sale. She said it was much too soon, and her voice rang with grief. Although I was disappointed, I felt terrible for her. She apologized repeatedly, but promised to offer it to me first should she decide to sell at a later date.
Not long afterward, Randy called me to verify that I had spoken with Tom — and that I had agreed to buy it two years earlier. Tom was also deceased by this time, so I relayed the information and history of the car he had provided me. Randy was not at all familiar with the ’67 model. He had owned his ’65 for a few years, and he and Andrew had restored their family’s ’71 GTX, but he had never worked on a ’67. As they dove into what would become a six-year restoration, Randy called on me several times for technical information. I often took photos of various
Admittedly, my plan for Jerry’s GTX was to make it cosmetically correct, but mechanically I would have taken a few liberties with it to suit my taste. I would have mothballed the original 18-spline “Hemi” transmission (which is correct in 440 applications) in favor of an overdrive four-speed, which would allow for more pleasurable highway cruising. I would have also installed a new 800 CFM Edelbrock carburetor, electronic ignition, radial tires, and possibly stiffer torsion bars and sway bar. Randy, however, chose to go the concourse restoration route. His ’71 GTX had garnered numerous awards from prestigious shows, and he was intent on making the ’67 every bit as correct.
It occurred to me that the three of us, now good friends, had been brought together from three different states by what had been nothing more than a rusty old Plymouth. Although I never knew Jerry, I’m sure I sensed him smiling from the back seat.

Bob Ashton, the organizer of the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals held every November near Chicago, was well aware of Randy’s attention to detail. The Lowe family had displayed their ’71 GTX at the MCACN show previously, and it had scored well in judging. Bob invited them to unveil their ’67 GTX at the 2022 MCACN show. Being the thoughtful and hospitable guy he is, Randy insisted that Rita be there not only to see Jerry’s completed car for the first time, but also to install the last few pieces, thus completing the restoration. He also asked me to attend. Rita was present for the show, and she installed the stickers under the hood, inside the trunk, and in the driver’s door jamb. Unfortunately, I could not join them. In its first outing, the GTX scored an amazing 994 points out of a possible 1,000!
Two years later, she made good on her promise. Unfortunately, by then my wife and I had already purchased another ’67 GTX. Rita listed Jerry’s car for sale, and Andrew Lowe in Waterloo, IA saw the ad. Andrew’s father Randy had owned a ’65 Plymouth Belvedere with a 383 and a four-speed in his youth, and he had the itch for another one. Although the ’67 was an updated body style compared to his ‘65, Randy was intrigued, so he and Andrew went to see it. Randy purchased it, and it took two trips to haul the shell of the long dormant GTX and all its parts to his Iowa home.
Soon I was on the phone with Tom, and he sent me photos of the rusty hulk. Decades earlier, the original silver paint had been covered with a now-faded orange hue, and surface rust was bleeding through in several places. The right fender and hood had been replaced with pieces from a maroon Belvedere II. While he filled me in regarding the details of the car, he quizzed me about my plans for it and the level of restoration I had in mind. As friendly as he was, he stated that there were two conditions that were non-negotiable. First was the price. It was higher than I felt the car was worth in its current condition, but it was optioned almost exactly how I would have ordered it had I been able to buy one new. Second was the understanding that once the restoration was completed, Rita would have the opportunity to drive Jerry’s car. I agreed, and then Tom put me into contact with Rita.
Although the GTX was in pieces, she knew where all of those pieces were. After discussing it with my wife, I agreed to purchase the project, and I made arrangements to travel over Thanksgiving weekend to her home in Kansas City, Mo. and take possession of the car and all its parts.

On a personal note, it has warmed my heart to see such dedication from parents and grandparents who would like nothing more than to teach the younger generation about the cars they love and grew up with.
At the end of the day, we are all merely caretakers for these classics and the more knowledge we can pass forward, the better the chance that our cars will live on for generations to come.

“Bringing a classic muscle car into the family was quite an experience for a 14-year-old. I grew up hearing stories about the cars my dad used to own when he was younger, but it was a blast getting the experience of actually driving around in them. One of my favorite memories of the car was back in my senior year of high school. My dad gave me the keys to the Challenger and told me to take it to school for the day. He had let me drive it on occasion before that, but this was my first solo adventure. I remember being extremely nervous at first, but once out on the road, those nerves disappeared, and I was loving every minute of the drive! I made it to school without issue and all throughout the day classmates would be arguing about which teacher brought in the car. I’ll never forget the looks on their faces when they found out I was the one that had brought in the car.

“I purchased this 1973 Challenger when my son Mike was 14 years old. We immediately began to go to shows, cruises and road trips. We also worked on the car together, replacing old parts and continuing where the previous restoration ended. Swapping out engines, transmissions, axles and rear ends in a home garage is always a fun learning experience. At first, Mike started out as the parts and tool guy — handing me whatever I needed while watching what I was doing. Eventually he started doing the repairs and upgrades himself while I stood back, giving advice and fetching the tools or parts that he needed. It’s funny how that took a complete turn over the years.

“Our family story starts with the ‘70 Road Runner you see at left, the Dirty Bird. I purchased it in 1995 and it has been through many transformations. It will be completed as a street car with a 528 wedge with fuel injection, 727 gear vendors, and 354 Dana. The ‘69 convertible is our family cruiser we take everywhere from local cruise nights to the hot rod power tour. The ‘68 convertible is a ‘68 R/T automatic. We have been fortunate to have been featured in magazines and video interviews as well. This is a true family passion with our daughters helping with moving the cars, fixing the cars with us, and understanding how they operate. The girls get driven to and from school on the first and last days in our cars. Alyssa has made a video featuring our ‘66 Belvedere wagon. Lisa’s ‘72 Satellite provides our family with many memories from home, to Carlisle, and to the Jersey shore. Our girls see and understand the cars are a part of our lives, but also see that through the cars we have made lifelong friends. People we now call family and others that no matter where you are will reach out and help when you are in need, or for us to help others with either repairs or parts. Our lives have been very blessed to have what we have and to know the people we do. This is our Mopar family story.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic organization devoted to the mutual helpfulness of those who have served in the United States military. Therefore, what can be more American that an American Legion Post hosting a classic car cruise?
The American Legion Post 28 in Absecon, N.J. held it inaugural car cruise and many cruisers came out to greet this newest area event. The cruise is every third Wednesday and starts at 5 p.m. Cruisers can enjoy food and beverages at the cruise and show support for an organization dedicated to our military. While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed.
The fine members of the town of Cinnaminson’s Fire Department held their first annual “Becky” Scott Memorial Car Show. The theme was part of the fire department’s “paint the town pink” campaign. The proceeds of this show are donated to a scholarship and also donated to the Breast Cancer Unit at Virtua Hospital, both in memory of EMT BeckyMoreScott.than100
During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing.

Like all good cruisin’ events, there was a DJ playing cool tunes on a hot day along with food and family fun. As the flyer stated, the event was open to anything that had wheels and there were vehicles from cars to fire trucks.

12 SOUL RIDERS SALUTE TO WOMEN The Soul Riders Auto Club hosted their second Hawaiian car event with the theme “Women with Classic Cars or Hot Rods.” It was a full house at the VFW#3792 in Townsend.Theladies of the club fashioned this show around a Hawaiian theme with giveaways, dash plaques, door prizes, 50/50s and trophies. Close to 100 rides came out to a show where the goal was to gather toys for children and share a day of food, fun and friends. The show was held at the Moonshiners Bar and Grill in Mays Landing, N.J. and hosted by the Blacktop Villains Car Club. The Villains are no strangers to putting on great events and this was no exception. Participants were asked to bring a new unwrapped toy or make a donation through the registration. With plenty of shade, good food and the holiday spirit, the Blacktop Villains and the Moonshiners team are surly on Santa’s good list.

Minotola, N.J. is a quaint town where everyone seems to know each other. So, a great way to get the whole town together is to have a community day. Now no community day would seem complete without a car show to add that extra touch. Enter the Blacktop Villains Car Club. This fine group of car aficionados staged a car show at this gathering and in Blacktop Villain tradition, there were no shortages of participants. The fun all took place in Bruno Melini Park, with cars on display and everything from pie eating to face painting taking place.
How does one take a very hot July day and turn it into a cool time? Well, have a Christmas in July car show at a cool location hosted by a cool car club. The results? An instant success that beats the summer heat.

The contributions of the veterans who have given so much in their service to our country may sometimes seem to go unnoticed by the younger generation. This is not the case for Stephanie Lombardo, a young lady who hails from South Jersey. Stephanie wanted to make a special contribution to the residents of the New Jersey Veteran Memorial Home. She achieved this goal and presented a check for $600 to the home at the 13th annual Salute to the Veterans Cruise.

We should always remember that men and women in law enforcement can be our neighbors, friends and family members. They are everyday people who have a unique occupation. Sometimes we forget they are doing a job that is not always safe. Yet, they continue to serve the community and get to meet and greet people at the annual National Night Out festivities held each first week in August.

Now this is all cool stuff and I love bells and whistles on a car, so it’s neat to have these features for the years you own this ride right up to the day it’s paid off. But wait, that magic day you make the final payment is not necessarily the end of your financial commitment to a manufacturer. Some companies are starting to charge a monthly fee for some of the options in your car. Yes, those special options on YOUR car are not yours to own along with the car. These are features some companies refer to as “subscribing.”

Car builders have put everything from televisions to movie screens in their cars. The thought of battling big companies to put these features in a car in an aftermarket wrought with subscriptions attached will be an intriguing challenge for corporations and consumers. Time will tell.

It’s amazing the features new cars have today. Many of you, no doubt, are aware of the technology that goes into a new car. The self-correcting lane feature is unique. You drive out of your lane and the car prevents you from going any farther and steers the car back into the proper lane. There are cameras all over the car and a touchscreen information center that tells you everything from the latest gasoline price to when your next payment is due.
