Understanding what drives today’s young car enthusiasts

ecently I was asked to speak to the Brandywine Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America at their monthly meeting. I have been in the automotive hobby nearly all of my life, and because I have been teaching the next generation of auto technicians for more than 20 years, they wanted to hear my thoughts on where the interests of kids lie today.

There are plenty of young car enthusiasts, they just have a different approach to the hobby.

Are enough of them into cars to carry the torch when we pass it to them? And if so, why do we rarely see them at car shows and other organized automotive events? How do they connect with other like-minded young people to discuss and share their passion for cars? To prepare for my speech, I conducted surveys in each of the three classes I taught during the spring semester.

I have long believed that our lust for automobiles is initiated by the “car gene.” Either a person is born with it, or they're not. Often, a catalyst of some sort stimulates that gene, which alters the course of that person’s life.

I grew up in the ‘70s, and cool cars were everywhere. I witnessed countless stoplight drags on Kirkwood Highway from the back seat of the family sedan, and I often rode my bike around our neighborhood to check out the Chargers, Camaros, Chevelles, Dusters, 442s, Mustangs, GTOs, and others. Most of these cars sported elevated tail-ends, fat tires, mag wheels, and loud exhaust. I loved these hot machines and the entire street scene long before I was old enough to partake in the fun, and I have been making up for lost time ever since.

My father liked cars, but he worked on them only out of necessity. When he did, I made sure to “help” by handing him the wrong wrenches and shining the light in the wrong place. Even so, I enjoyed working with him, and he taught me a lot about hand tools and the basics of auto repair. In fact, many of our neighbors performed maintenance and minor repairs on their cars in their driveways on Saturday mornings.

I bought my first car, a ’64 Dodge Dart, when I was 15. I replaced its ailing automatic transmission with a manual gearbox before I knew how to drive a stick-shift and before I even had a driver’s license. To earn money I cut grass, shoveled snow, delivered newspapers, and eventually (when I was 15) lucked into a job repairing vacuum cleaners. I built my second car, the ’68 Dart that I still own today, when I was a senior in high school. It, too, received a manual transmission swap as well as an engine transplant, manual steering swap, and lots of cosmetic work. Though I still love my Dart, back then I built what I could afford.

I often hear folks lamenting that kids are different today. But to be fair, we must also look at how both cars and society have changed. Modern cars are far more complex, so fewer people are capable of doing their own work. In addition, today an alarming number of kids grow up without fathers at home to show them the ropes of car care. I don’t mean to slight the women, but comparatively few females service their own vehicles.

In addition, kids don’t have the same opportunities to earn money that my generation did. Nowadays, few people read an actual newspaper. Those who still have home delivery receive their papers from adults who lob them from car windows, not from kids on bikes or afoot. Most folks who don’t cut their own grass hire a lawn service and not the kid down the street. Furthermore, many employers now require workers to be at least 18.

With the costs of new vehicles soaring, good used cars are in demand, and often priced out of reach for young drivers. In suburbia, homeowners’ associations frown heavily on project vehicles that remain on jack stands for weeks at a time. They also don’t allow cars that are unregistered or those that they deem eyesores.

But for the young people who navigate these pitfalls and whose passion for cars has been ignited, I would argue that their enthusiasm rivals ours. I asked

my students about their personal catalysts. Here is what some of them said:

“I always liked mechanical things, and I liked doing those things on my own, but it was the Pixar movie Cars that got me hooked on cars. Later, videos about the Japanese street racing scene also inspired me.”

“I’m a self-starter, and for me, it was the feeling of accomplishment when I fix something that got me hooked. I also realized that what came easily for me was something that other people couldn’t do.”

“I bought a truck when I was 16, and I started out by doing maintenance on it. I bought the truck I did because I could afford it, but I couldn’t afford to pay someone to work on it. Later, I started doing maintenance on my family’s cars, and then I decided to really get into cars.”

“I like all forms of racing — rally and GT especially. I like all of the racing video games. When I was young I was pulled in by movies, especially The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift . My father worked on cars, and I grew up helping him.”

“I bought an Acura RSX. Then I had to learn how to drive a stick shift! After that, I had a couple of Honda Civics, and when I blew the engine in one of them, I had to learn on my own how to swap an engine. I had already replaced the clutch in it. I didn’t have the money to pay a shop to do it, so I learned on my own.”

One of the take-aways is that movies, video games, YouTube videos, and clips posted to social media all play huge roles in reaching and inspiring today’s youth. Another is that kids today buy the vehicles they can afford, and they modify them to suit their tastes. Doesn’t that sound like what we did when we were young?

Next, I asked how they meet up with each other. Since we rarely see them at our traditional shows and cruises, do they have their own? If so, where? How do they organize them, and how do they get the word out? Some of their answers might surprise you.

“It all comes down to who you know. When I’m driving and I see a car I like, I make eye contact with the driver. We pull over and talk about our cars. I also meet a lot of my car friends at work, both co-workers and customers.”

“Our meets are more random and spontaneous than a traditional show or cruise. The big meets are called ‘take-overs,’ and sometimes they get really out of hand because once you put the word out, you have no control over who shows up. That’s when things get wild — burnouts, donuts in the middle of the road, etc. Usually, the cops have to break them up. Advertising on social media brings out the wrong people. The small meets happen by word of mouth. This keeps the idiots out. But if you aren’t connected to the right people, you’ll never see the text that goes out, so it’s important to make friendships every chance you have. Also, our meetups generally last for a short period of time — 15 minutes to maybe an hour, no longer.”

While this may be a sad statement about a segment of our youth, the “good eggs” don’t like to be lumped in with the bad ones.

In closing, today’s young car enthusiasts aren’t all that different from us. They share our enthusiasm, but they have adapted to the world they grew up in. That world is much different from the world I grew up in. Their cars are not the same as ours and they do things differently from us, but our similarities are greater than our differences.

HEROES OF OUR HOBBY

The men and women who strive to make our hobby better

Kacie Erin Rumford, daughter of Andy and Donna Rumford, was a wonderful girl who, like many kids (including myself), lost her way in life somewhere between childhood and adulthood.

I found my way back and went on to live a good life — it may not have been the perfect life my parents envisioned, but it was perfect for me. Sadly, Kacie did not find her way and passed on at the early age of 23 from a drug overdose. Her parents didn’t get to watch her mature, get married, and have children and grandchildren of her own. It is by far the most torturous experience a parent can go through.

Andy, having lost his only daughter, had to find a way to not only persevere but to fulfill Kacie’s final wish of helping others who had gone down the same destructive path. Through the grief, and with the help of family and good friends, Kacie’s Cause was born.

As with many innovations and ideas, it all started very small. A car show at Downingtown High School, organized by Andy’s close friend Matt Guthan, to bring awareness to an epidemic that was sweeping across the country and taking our children. You see, as it turns out, it wasn’t just Andy’s family that was hurt by illegal drugs. Many families, including prominent and well-known ones, were dealing with this scourge. Support has continued to grow year after year as people have come out to show just how aware they are of this worthwhile cause.

Today, more than 10 years later, Kacie’s Cause has grown tremendously. The organization has eight chapters now and they’ve given away more than 600 college and recovery scholarships totaling more than $150,000. Kacie’s Cause has also given away more than 4,000 doses of Narcan, a lifesaving drug.

Several local celebrities have come out to the events and spoken about their own struggles with addiction, including Chris Therien of the Philadelphia Flyers and Tony Luke of Tony Luke’s restaurants, who lost a son. Recently, the Chester County Motorcycle Club “ABATE” had a charity ride, raising money in Kacie’s memory.

Throughout all of this, Andy prefers to keep a lower profile and work behind the scenes for Kacie’s Cause. He is appreciative of all the love and hard work of everyone involved. That includes Tony D'andrea, Johnny Pappas, Rona Pappas, Adam Sledd, Matt Guthan, Jim McGoldrick, Barry Kimmelman, Linda Kimmelman, Don MacLeod, Kacie’s Cause President Luis Tovar, and event manager Dave DiVito.

In 2021, another milestone happened when Kacie’s House was opened. Kacie’s House provides a safe, structured environment for women seeking long-term recovery from addiction in Chester County, Pa.

Thanks to the hard work of all these people and more, and the support of many communities across the Delaware Valley, the Kacie’s Cause Car Show has grown from a small local show into an event anticipated, attended, and supported by classic car enthusiasts throughout the tri-state area. The 2023 show attracted more than 700 participants and a countless number of spectators. The 2024 event brings a 12-foot-tall Optimus Prime, a petting zoo, bounce house, K-9 demonstration, numerous 6-foot-tall trophies, and guest speaker Tony Luke to talk about his experiences. For 2025, the ultimate classic car guy Dennis Gage, from the TV show My Classic Car, will be there to walk the event, talk to the car owners, and film an episode for his show. Year after year, Kacie’s Cause Car Show has grown into one of the premier events not just in our area, but in the entire country!

Today, the show takes place at the Classic Auto Mall in Morgantown, Pa., one of the most amazing classic car dealers in the country with more than 1,000 cars to view — many so unique you’re unlikely to ever see another. It’s one of my favorite places to visit and a must-see for any classic car enthusiast. You can expect to spend many hours walking through and photographing an incredible selection of automobiles.

Though Kacie Erin Rumford died at an especially early age, she leaves us a legacy of hope and love for those struggling with drug abuse but hoping to begin a new life. It is with profound respect and honor that Cruising Magazine posthumously recognizes Kacie Rumford as a “Hero Of Our Hobby.” May her death serve as reminder that life is precious and can be taken from us abruptly if we don’t treat it as the gift it is.

Gears & Beers Cruise

Craft beer breweries are now very cool spots on the landscape. Each location has a distinct mark and personality. One such brewery is nestled in the heart of Egg Harbor Township in the southern part of New Jersey. The Hidden Sands Brewing Company hosted a “Gears and Beers” gathering for the members of the car community. Not only did the brewery get to offer patrons a fine selection of brews, it also provided a fine selection of cool rides as eye candy. Cruisers came out to enjoy a craft brew, great food from a mobile vendor and cruising camaraderie. Truly a great way to start the warm weather cruising season.

Fossils Car Cruise

The Fossils of South Jersey Car Club has been around since 1987 and during that long history it has hosted numerous events and contributed to many worthwhile causes and charities. Fossils’ signature events are the Jackson Outlet cruises, held at the Jackson Outlet stores in Jackson, N.J. These cruises draw more than 160 rides on average, with no shortage of cars, stores and food for cruisers to enjoy. The Fossils cruises run April to October, with a special one set for November. Cruisin’ In Winter

During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing.

Del Rods Spring Into 50th Year

On a blustery Saturday in April, the Del Rods Car Club celebrated their golden anniversary with the club’s Spring Kick-Off Show. Scores of vintage, classic and custom rods came out for the annual event at Greentree Plaza in Dover, Del. A dozen trophies were awarded with Best of Show going to Keith Snyder for his beautiful, modified ‘55 Chevy. Enter Tom Rightler who is the owner/operator of Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars located in Bridgeton, NJ. Rightler is no stranger to restoring muscle cars and has animpressive list of clients and accomplishments. It’s also safe to say his passion for the Chevelle served as special inspiration.

While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed.

Cars and Coffee In Haddon Heights

Cars and coffee gatherings are great ways to create an early morning of car fun. The smell of fresh-brewed, high-octane coffee, some breakfast fare, and lots of great cars to check out really gets the day going.

One very popular C&C takes place starting in April in the community of Haddon Heights, N.J. This cruise starts brewing at 9am and the rides come pouring in all morning. There is always a real great varity of cars to see, from foreign exotics to domestic in both modern and classic form.

Volkswagen Club Cars and Coffee

The South Jersey Volkswagen Club consists of a group of enthusiasts dedicated to the ownership and joy of a ride that has been around for more than 70 years. The club stages a Cars and Coffee at the Lamp Post Diner in Clementon, N.J., that is open to cruisers from all car persuasions. There was no shortage aircooled rides and domestic cruisers as well. It was morning to enjoy a “Breakfast with the Beetles.”

HOW TO CONSIGN

Most often, it all starts with a phone call. Customers are encouraged to call Mecum at (262) 275-5050 to discuss their consignment options with a customer service or consignment agent, but for those who know exactly which auction they want to offer their car at, they’re welcome to skip right to filling out a Request for Position form at Mecum.com.

An online auction Request for Position form should be filled out for each vehicle a seller plans to offer. It can be completed online or printed and returned by fax or mail. Consignors are asked to provide payment information (a credit card) for each vehicle consigned, but the entry fee is ultimately based on the actual assigned lot number (which indicates a vehicle’s position among the auction lineup) and isn’t charged until that information is determined with the expertise and assistance of an agent.

Once the lot number is determined, a dedicated Customer Experience Agent will take the baton and work with the consignor to completion. The agent will email an e-signable contract and other necessary information/documentation to the seller. Consignors then collaborate with their dedicated Customer Experience Agent to submit photos, draft descriptions and complete the consignment process. Each individual car webpage can display more than 20 photos of the vehicle to be sold.
