A WIDOW’S PLIGHT
There are challenges aplenty when inheriting an unfinished car project
ABy Frank Adkins
s the years tick by and our perspective shifts, many of us come to realize that what was once a hobby focused on cars has morphed into a hobby in which people are at the center of what we do. When we attend automotive gatherings, we look forward to seeing our friends. Dare I say that for most senior members of our hobby, the cars have become secondary.
Along the way many of us have also come to terms with our own mortality. One day we will be gone, and the cars we have enjoyed will move on to new owners. Often, they will leave our immediate families, and the placement of our prized possessions with new caretakers will be facilitated by our loved ones. If those cars are either finished builds or not-yet-started projects, they will be easier for our family members to re-home than if they are disassembled, in-progress projects. Few people are willing to buy a life-size puzzle, and there is no way for a buyer to be certain all of those puzzle pieces are present. I am reminded of this from time to time when I look around our garage and see pieces of our '70 Challenger, the “eternal project,” stashed here and there.
A couple of close friends are familiar with my unfinished projects, as I am with theirs. We have agreed to help each other's widows and children when the unthinkable, yet inevitable happens. This agreement is something of a car guys’ life insurance policy. But in the back of my mind I still wonder, is that enough? Recently I was reminded of these worries when I went to investigate a '69 Dart GTS project that was for sale a couple of states away.
The trip came about as the result of a post in one of the Facebook groups I follow. In that post, a new widow, Karen, sought information about the value of the car that her recently deceased husband, Dan, had owned since the late 1970s. Originally powered by a 340 according to the VIN, it now held a 383 between its fenders. But did it run? How complete was the car? What was the condition of the body and undercarriage? And just how was the big-block engine mounted into the engine bay that had once housed a small block? What other work did the car need? Not surprising, the poor woman could not answer any of these questions. Furthermore, any potential buyer would have to visit her residence to inspect the car. Understandably, the thought of inviting strangers to her home made her quite uncomfortable.
I had two reasons for making this trip. First, I hope to purchase a '68 or '69 Dart GTS, preferably a complete car needing mechanical work, but minimal body work. Located in the region where it was, I was optimistic the body would be solid and it might be the right car for me. Second, if it proved to not be, I wanted to evaluate the car and provide Karen with sufficient information to answer the questions that other prospective buyers were sure to ask.
When I arrived at her rural home, I discovered several vehicles and a few boats on trailers strewn about the property, apparently all projects of her late husband’s. Later I learned that it all had to go. Karen came outside, greeted me, and directed me to the detatched garage that stood several yards away. Because she had difficulty walking, she hopped aboard her golf cart and met me there.
Inside the cramped garage I found Dan's derelict Dart just as he had left it. Its grille was missing, but I discovered two grilles nearby. Nestled in the engine bay was indeed a 383 topped with an Edelbrock intake manifold and a trio of Holley two-barrel carburetors. With the exception of the dash and headliner, the interior had been removed. The console and rear seat
sat nearby, but I could not locate the front seats. Karen thought they might be in the trunk, which was stuffed with blankets and such, and not easily accessible due to the other items piled around the car. Given her lack of mobility, she had been unable to clear those things away.
To my surprise, the garage floor contained a pit from which I could inspect the underside. I discovered that the 383 had been mounted to what appeared to be an old Direct Connection spool-mount K-frame. The engine was located correctly in the chassis, so the transmission mount mated the iron four-speed to its crossmember just as the factory had intended. Dan had sourced factory big-block clutch linkage, and the geometry appeared to be spot-on. Oddly, this Dart had been factory equipped with torque boxes, normally found on convertibles, which tied the frame rails to the rocker panels. Unfortunately, the quarter panels, trunk extensions, trunk filler panel, and trunk lid all showed heavy rust and would require replacement.
Karen and I talked while I inspected her late husband's car, and she shared memories of their escapades in it. Speaking of the early eighties she said, "At that time, it was the fastest car in the county."
There was more than a hint of pride in her voice. But as we conversed, I sensed that it wasn't easy for her to talk up Dan's car to a stranger and prospective buyer, for it held more than 40 years of memories — time spent cruising and hours shared working on it.
"When our kids were younger, sometimes we would sneak out to the garage to 'work on the car' in order to get away from them for a while. We would hide out here drinking beer. We thought we were being slick, but the kids always knew," she laughed.
But as we talked, I couldn't help envisioning my wife in Karen's situation, trying to sell our Challenger and other projects to strangers. How awkward and painful would it be for her? And what must I do now, while I am still healthy, to ensure that she doesn't have to endure that anxiety and heartache?
Karen mentioned that a supposed friend had tried to talk her into giving him Dan's Dart. He had a small collection of similar cars, so he was familiar with them and knew the classic car market. It seemed he had tried to take advantage of her, hoping that she was uneducated about the values and desirability of old cars. Quite the contrary, she knew the significance of Dan's car, and she had a good sense of its value. I wondered, had Dan established a similar “car guys’ life insurance” arrangement with this man to look after each other’s widows and families?
I returned home late that evening and gave my wife an extra kiss as she lay asleep in our bed. The next day I wrote up my findings about Dan's Dart, and I forwarded the document to Karen. The car needs more metal work than I am comfortable committing to, but I assured her I would help her with the sale in any way that I could. Although she strikes me as a strong, smart, and independent woman, my heart goes out to her. In her current situation, she needs all the help she can get.
HEROES OF OUR HOBBY
The men and women who strive to make our hobby better
By Lou Sitaras
This year Cruising Magazine has been honoring the classic car enthusiasts who go above and beyond to make sure our hobby continues well into the future. There is without question one name that immediately comes to the forefront when discussing Heroes Of Our Hobby and that name is Paul Gebauer Sr.
Mr. G, as he is affectionally known, has spent a lifetime learning, teaching and sharing the information he’s gleaned over the years to generations of enthusiasts willing to take the time to listen. He started work as a zone/service representative for Chrysler Corporation in the early 1960s. By the time he retired in the early 2000s, he was a tech advisor for Chrysler. He is not an egotistical person who pontificates just to hear the sound of his voice, but rather a soft spoken man who enjoys one-on-one conversation — especially about Mopars.
At 85 years young, you might think Mr. G would be living in a retirement community playing shuffleboard, but as I write this article, he’s pulling the engine out of his 1916 Paige, a car he has driven all over the country with his wife Marilyn and the Brass Era Tourers. Keep in mind that this is an extremely difficult car to drive. You have a giant manual steering wheel, no hydraulic brakes, and you have to adjust the timing manually as you’re driving. It’s a car even the youngest and strongest of men would be challenged to drive, let alone a senior citizen.
Many might wonder why a lifelong Mopar enthusiast wouldn’t just drive a Chrysler, Dodge or Plymouth instead of a Paige. The surprising truth: the Paige Motor Company is Mopar. You see, Paige was acquired by the Graham Brothers Motor Company. Graham was then acquired by Kaiser Frazer, who merged with Willys to become Kaiser Jeep. Kaiser Jeep then became Jeep Corporation, owned by AMC. AMC was then purchased by Chrysler in 1987. It might be a stretch, but that definitely makes Paige a Mopar, and their vehicles are welcome today to any Mopar related event.
In addition to the 1916 Paige, Mr. G also owns a 1929 Chrysler 75 Series Roadster, a 1935 DeSoto Airflow, a 1940 New Yorker convertible, a 1955 DeSoto convertible, a 1967 Plymouth GTX convertible, and a 1989 Chrysler Maserati TC with the rare 16-valve engine and a fivespeed. If or when the day of a retirement community comes along, I can just imagine this caravan of old cars pulling in while the neighbors look on in amazement. It would be a most memorable day!
While working at Chrysler, one of the projects Mr. G took on was called the Supercar Clinics. Mopar racers like Sox & Martin, Jack Werst, Herb McCandless and Don Grotheer would head out to various Mopar dealerships and hold a tech clinic. Younger enthusiasts would come in with their Road Runners, ‘Cudas and other muscle cars and the pros would then teach the younger drivers how to get a bit more performance out of their cars. You can just imagine the thrill of a younger driver as one of their racing idols would be working on their very own car!
I think all of us have been influenced by car people growing up — dads, moms, brothers, cousins, or neighbors have all played a part in who we are, and for me, that person was Mr. G. I would go over to his house and visit with my friend Paul Jr. and see old cars, lots of parts, neat toys from the 1960s and ‘70s, and oftentimes Mr. G in the garage working on a project. The driveway was often filled with rare and high-performance Mopars. You see, the other Mopar executives would all take the comfy and plush cars. That left Mr. G with the high-performance cars to take home, including three different 440powered Plymouth Superbirds.
Mr. G was pretty sharp when it came to the antics of his son Paul Jr. and me. One day, Paul Jr. came home with an overheating problem on one of his Mopar muscle cars. When Mr. G popped open the hood and saw all the belts off of their pulleys, he knew right away the car had been over-revved. Another day Paul Jr. and I launched his ‘69 Belvedere station wagon into a snowdrift. By the time the car made it home, it was overheating. Mr. G popped the hood once more and found a solid block of packed snow completely encasing the engine compartment. Once again, he knew we were trying to hide something, and he was right on the money! You just can’t get anything by older car guys because they’ve already pulled all these stunts in their youth.
These days Mr. G can be found every Tuesday morning with his Road Runners car club — a group of guys in their 70s and 80s who meet up at a restaurant, museum, old car dealership or someone’s house or garage. If the weather is nice, they drive their old cars. These gentlemen have accumulated a wealth of knowledge over the years and they’re happy and even thrilled to share that knowledge with younger generations.
It is because of this selflessness that Cruising Magazine is pleased to name Paul Gebauer Sr. as a Hero Of Our Hobby. He has dedicated his life to our craft and is a role model for future generations to live by. Thank you, Mr. G, for steering this writer to a life of classic Mopars. You are MY hero.
Hagley Car Show Implements
New
Admission Policy
British Invasion is the theme for this year’s Hagley Car Show, set for Sept. 15 at Hagley Museum (200 Creek Rd., Wilm. DE 19807). This year, more than 500 cars from the early 1900s through the late 1990s will be on display in what many consider the “best car show in Delaware.”
The event also includes a vehicle parade, motoring music and a food court. While at the Car Show, visitors can stop by the exhibition Du Ponts Down the Road in the 1844 Hagley Barn.
Because interest in the car show is greater than the physical capacity of Hagley, this year spectator admission to the show will be limited. Admission will be sold by the carload rather than individual tickets, and available for advance purchase only. Parking passes will be mailed in advance of the show. No day-ofshow admission will be available.
Those interested in registering their car for the show (all cars through 1999 are welcome), must register online at Hagley.org.

A Tale of Two Clubs: Part 1
I know it’s very accurate to say the car community supports the members of our Armed Forces. These men and women have given a great deal of their time and energy in their service to our country. The New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland, N.J. is home to veterans who have served.
The Original Garden State Corvette Club based in Deptford, N.J. held a bar-bque for the residents of the Veterans Memorial Home. The club made sure there was no shortage of food and desserts. There were plenty of dedicated Vette guys and gals who came out from OGSCC to show their gratitude to the residents. This was the club’s way of thanking all served. As a matter of fact, many of the club members took a veteran for a drive around the facility grounds. Vettes and vets!
Corvettes, a bar-b-que and a celebration for our military veterans just does not get any better. It’s as American as one can get.
Cruisin’ In Winter
During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing.
Black Cat Cruise
When it’s a pleasant evening, a cruiser, many times, wants to take out their ride for a few hours of good conversation, great food and a friendly atmosphere. One place to go where there is all of this and more is the Jim & Bob’s Black Cat Bar & Grill in Absecon, N.J.
Enter Tom Rightler who is the owner/operator of Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars located in Bridgeton, NJ. Rightler is no stranger to restoring muscle cars and has animpressive list of clients and accomplishments. It’s also safe to say his passion for the Chevelle served as special inspiration.
Cruisers can enjoy a casual gathering from May to December at the Black Cat and the proprietors even offer a special cruise menu. It’s just another outing to enjoy during the endless summer of 2024.
While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed.
Visiting a shop that specializes in classic and specialty rides is a great way keep the spirit alive and get to see another side of our hobby. Check out Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars at midatlanticmusclecar.com 8 AND 9 INCH

A Tale of Two Clubs: Part 2
The South Jersey Camaro Car Club is another great example of the members of the car community that appreciate the services and sacrifices of our veterans. To show their appreciation to these men and women who have served our country they held a BBQ for the residents of the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland. The club came out in large numbers to cook and serve the veterans who are residents of the home.
Sometimes people who are not familiar with the car hobby may not be aware of the generosity of car clubs and the genuine admiration and respect that they have for veterans and those who defend our precious freedoms. Car clubs reach out to many groups and charities and that is something that can only come from the heart.

Cruisin’ Main Street
How many of you remember back in the day when cruising the main street in town was the social event? It was a rite of passage for some as they got to show off their rides to the local townspeople. Remember the guy with the fastest ride, as well as the one with the most tricked out paint, and, of course the rise was a guaranteed chick magnet. Main Street had its own personality in the car scene, and in Hammonton, N.J. those memories of cruising with special rides lives on with the city hosting its “Cruisin’ Main Street” event. Hundreds of cars and enthusiasts came to Hammonton to cruise on this lovely evening. As all car enthusiasts are aware, the hobby of cruising in the car makes for a memorable time during the endless Cruising Summer of 2024.
Knights of Columbus Car Show
Father’s Day is that occasion where Dad gets to enjoy his day of recognition. The title of “father” is celebrated in many ways from cookouts to car events with Dad in mind. The South Jersey chapter of Knights of Columbus staged its annual Father’s Day Car Show in June, and the there was no shortage of dads and cool rides in attendance. The show had over 100 owners with their rides come out to enjoy a breakfast buffet (only $10 for some great food). The event was open to cars and trucks, and offered an opportunity to purchase gift cards for area veterans.
Proceeds from the show went to benefit the Knights of Columbus in Waterford, N.J. It was a special day for Dad thanks to the Knights of Columbus Shane’s Castle Council #7463.

Sinister Mopar Cruise
In the automotive world nearly every American car manufacturer has a word associated with their brand that says “USA Power.” The word “Mopar” always conjures up cars that represent power and performance for Chrysler enthusiasts. The Sinister Mopar Club is a group dedicated to all things Mopar and the American spirit.
The club holds a cruise appley named the “All American Fridays” cruise every third Friday of the month at the House of Brews pub in Turnersville, N.J. The gathering brings out a fine variety of domestic rides and, of course, the Mopar faithful.
