Outbuilders of Central Oregon The new ownership of Outbuilders is entering our third year of operation. Following in the footsteps of our previous owner, who started the business back in 1992, we are enjoying the pace of early spring sales and pleasant weather conditions for building. This year we are seeing an increase in backyard shed orders (large) requiring building permits from various jurisdictions. Having established our name and quality of construction, we are receiving duplicate orders from our past clients and many of them wanting pole barns, garages and the like. The construction of large backyard sheds requires much more planning and preparation. Often, engineering is required to establish the snow load requirements for the roof trusses and thee header schedule for taller and wider overhead garage doors. The main difference in building a garage vs. the pole barn, is that the garage requires footings and stem walls in the perimeter foundation and vertical studs in the walls. Pole barns use a horizontal wall system with kiln dried 2” x 6”studs connected to the large vertical pressure treated posts that are set in concrete. Of the half a dozen pole barns we have planned and built, half of them were built with a full or partial pour of concrete. When we provide a concrete floor for an outdoor shed, we do the finish grading of the site, provide a 4” sub base of compacted crushed rock and then a nice and level 4” pour of concrete. Following the slab pour, the next day we come and cut in the expansion joints. One of the first garages we built in 2014 was a two story garage with living space upstairs. This 24’ x 24’ structure was ideal for the home owner’s needs of a roomy garage for large trucks and vehicles while being able to use the upper level for a spacious man cave. We enjoy being able to custom design and build the right sized structure for function and design. Side wing Lean-‐to carports have also been requested on our structures, be it a storage shed like our Classic Gable or on the side of a garage or pole barn. One of the more unique builds we did last year was to put an extended roof off the side of our Lean-‐to shed giving the owner spacious storage space inside with a tall loft area as well as a covered area for his tractors, trucks and the like. Not all of our larger buildings are targeted for storage of vehicles, animals and tractors, however. The Pacific Series is also very popular for a shed backyard and versatile in providing a larger breadth of building with a variety of longer lengths. One Pacific Series shed we recently built in Redmond, incorporates the back area with an overhead garage door and a partition in the middle for an office or study area complete with insulated flooring, walls, ceiling and many windows as well as house doors with a half lite style or a solid front door effect. The Pacific Series building can also work well for a tiny home, man cave or she shed. The typical width of our Pacific Series structure is 16’ wide and varies in length from 16’ to 36’. This gives the homeowner a building that is from 256 sq. ft. to 576 sq. ft. The interior wall height of the Pacific Series is 7’6” but we can build them taller to 10’ walls and add popular sleeping lofts for any outbuilding.
Extended porch roofs are also gaining popularity in our local market. These roofs, which often resemble the bill on a baseball or golf cap create a covered area for clients to sit and read outside of their outbuilding, office, work shop etc. Other folks have hired Outbuilders to come and build particular outbuildings like a covered porch roof over their back or front deck on their existing homes. So, as you can see, Outbuilders builds far more than chicken coups, greenhouses, storage sheds, boathouses and the like. Please give us a call and we would be happy to meet with you and help solve your outdoor building needs. Planning and designing the new structure for our clients is what we enjoy and do the best.
