Time to

PUMP it Up BODYPUMP is the original barbell class that will sculpt, tone and strengthen your entire body. Focusing on low weight and high repetition movement’s participants can expect to burn bodyfat, increase muscular strength and endurance and achieve great body conditioning. Whether you’re an experienced gym-goer looking for a new exercise fix or a complete novice wanting to start off on the right foot then this class is for you. Bodypump focuses its exercises around all your major muscle groups and incorporates compound lifts such as Squats, Lunges and Presses that have a massive benefit in improving everyday life. Classes run for 45-60 minutes where each exercise is brilliantly choreographed to chart topping music which is constantly refreshed and updated. Using a range of exercise tempos that are synced to the beat really allows you to engage with the track and massively enhances the workout.

OUTFIT Cornwall caught up with Fitness Manager Harry at St Michaels Spa & Hotel to see what will get you fit for the rest of Photo and Film: Harry Taylor the year...

...works all major muscle groups, delivering quick results!

Bodypump is a form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which in recent years has had a huge amount of success in delivering results quickly.

Bouts of intense exercise followed by recovery periods have been proven to act as a catalyst for a whole host of physiological adaptions that would take far longer to achieve with the conventional exercise model that many instructors adopt. Apart from the huge calorie burn achieved from a Bodypump class (around 600 per hour) taking part in this style of exercise will help to reduce your resting heart rate, decrease the risk of developing Osteoporosis and increase your metabolic rate.

• Bodypump classes are extremely fun to take part in. • Current age of class goers ranges from 18-70 proving

its huge appeal as an exercise class for anyone.

• There is a great sense of everyone working to

achieve the same goal and you can gain great support from the friends you make by attending these classes.

• Exercise isn’t all about hard work but when you feel

motivated by a class of this nature pushing yourself to your full potential becomes second nature and hugely rewarding.

• St Michael’s hotel and Spa are proud to teach this

class and to help people achieve the results they want. Curious about Body Pump? Take a look at it here.

Melissa Reid

How did you become visually impaired, is this from birth? I was born visually impaired. I'm totally blind in my right eye and have limited vision in my left.

a Falmouth Star

How does fitness/ sport influence people's well-being?

Falmouth Star Melissa Reid is dominating the GB Para-Triathlete scene. British and European Gold Champion, upcoming 2013 World Championships and 2016 Olympics gold hopeful, OUTFIT Cornwall caught up with Melissa to find out a little more about what makes her tick and to instill aspiration to anybody else with Olympic ambitions for Gold.

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it, don't let set backs stop you. Make sure you enjoy what your doing and smile :)

Where did your drive and ambition to enter the Olympics come from? It has evolved gradually. I never thought I would be good enough at anything to even think about it. But one set back led to another due to my eyesight. So I tried paratriathlon and thought I'd use my eyesight to my advantage for a change and I've been hooked ever since. 12 | OUTFIT CORNWALL AUGUST 2013

What is it about Cornwall that motivates you? Everything. Where else would I rather be to train. We've got free open water swims on our doorstep, whereas up country you have to pay to swim in a lake. Cornwall also has some of the best cycle and run routes the country has to offer. Plus the hills will only make you stronger.

It makes you feel good (maybe not at the time) but after. It gives you a healthy way of life, and social aspects are the best.

What words of inspiration can you give to others who need something to believe in to achieve more in life?

Enjoy what you're doing and smile!

What athlete inspires you the most? Tanni Grey-Thompson. I met her at the London 2012 Olympics she was brilliant. She told me everything that I wanted to know. She had an amazing career in sport and is a true inspiration to others.

Anything else you wish to add? I like my puppies (especially running with them :)

Cornwall's SeaHorses

Swimming with Horses is a new trend hitting the waves off the Cornish Coast this year. Head over to St Michaels Mount on Mounts Bay Long-Rock Cornwall and you’ll get to witness this new trend for yourselves.

You’ve been in a school, you’ve been on a hack, galloped down the beach - I bet you’ve not been for a swim in the sea though?! This is the beauty of riding with the Cornwall Sea Horses. OUTFIT Cornwall managed to find time with Vikki away from the horses to find out some more... Q. In terms of fitness – how is Swimming with horses different to normal riding? A. We find from a physical point of view it really works your core muscles, balance, strength and coordination.

Head over to St Michaels Mount on Mounts Bay Long-Rock in Cornwall and a magical sight awaits you... Cornwall's very own Sea Horses.

Not having a saddle i.e bareback riding means your legs are working a lot harder than conventional riding and in different ways. Without the saddle your body is more free to move in ways that the saddle would normally restrict. Being in the water supports your body and allows you to do the things you wouldn't normally try on dry land. If you fall off it becomes fun not painful!

Photo: Rebecca Gilbert RjG Photography

Inspired by Vikki from a group called the Cornwall Sea Horses, the business has been offering an alter experience to horse-riding like no other before...

Q. What does it feel like to swim with the horses? A. Swimming with a horse you feel weightless as the horse begins to powerfully stride through the water. For more experienced riders we go out when there are waves and this adds a whole new dimension to the experience. For the everyday person wanting to try this for the first time we would describe it as having extra arms and legs so that you can swim more powerfully than you ever dreamed possible!

Photo: Katarzyna Okrzesik

Q. For a novice rider, what can you say to tell people to just do it?!

The horses enjoy the surf at Polurrian

Q. 3 words? A. Fun, Exhilarating , Emotionally Moving. Q. Why should people give it a go? A. It’s unlike anything you will have done before. It's unusual, and everyone that comes be it experienced riders or total novices have been totally captivated by the whole experience. The combination of the sea, horses, the beautiful setting of St Michael's Mount and the people surrounding you also having fun make it special. 14 | OUTFIT CORNWALL AUGUST 2013

A. For the novice rider the whole experience is tailored to the individual. You are not made to feel inadequate even if you've never sat on a horse before. You will have a sea guide with you throughout your swim explaining and helping you along the way. As your confidence grows you will find yourself getting bolder and trying things you never thought you would. Everyone leaves the beach with a big smile and the optional ride back is a relaxing hack while reliving the experience.

"Everyone leaves the beach with a big smile" Q. Which is your favourite horse and why? A. Each horse has their own individual personalities and characteristics which is great when pairing riders to a horse as they are as diverse as we are. However my personal favourite is Wytske the Friesian and Gino. OUTFIT CORNWALL AUGUST 2013 | 15

"If you fall off it becomes fun not painful!" Q. How did you get into horse-riding? A. We have both been riding from an early age and have never lost the bug. Q. How typically Cornish is the experience you offer? A. Swimming with Cornwall Sea Horses is as cornish as a clotted cream tea! The setting is mounts bay with the stunning St Michael's Mount as a back drop, we are on Cornish bred horses in the ocean. Q. You’re connections to the media now are growing - how did Phaeleh enjoy the experience? A. Phaeleh were overwhelmed to see what we do and loved watching our horses and seeing the freedom and fun that we have. They are looking forward to working with us again and going swimming with us.

Watch the horses star in the music video for Phaelah on YouTube

Q. Can you say anything else to inspire people to try something new? Or just anything else about the experience? A. It’s always worth keeping an open mind in life. Try new experiences as they arise. Approach life with a positive outlook and you will not be disappointed.

OUTFIT Cornwall highly recommend this sport as a true Cornish and British fusion. Give it a go and enter the competition to win a swim for 4!

Each month we hit a new haunt to see why it deserves to be the OUTFIT Cornwall Bar of the Month...

This issue we were wowed by The Old Grammar School in Truro... Seriously Wowed! OUTFIT Cornwall caught up with Bar Manager Marc to find out how they did this. The Grammar School is 100% unique in its feel and atmosphere to others around Cornwall. Offering a personal service for the young and the old, and

across all demographics. From the lunch time British style food, to the evening style Tapas from Europe, seasonally updated by Head Chef Rob Kirby, the Grammar school offers an array for everybody! Getting down with the staff we saw that they were the trend setters for the place in the atmosphere they create. The attention to detail and consideration for each person is fabulous. Flagship salesmen/ women, how they act rubs off onto the customer and provide the desired effect for luxury dining. “Working with the Grammar School is fab”. It’s an educational work environment where staff learn a huge

amount from the Chef’s and Bar Management team. “It’s not rocket science really; we have fun time working so you have a fun time visiting us!” Hiring in September... If you want a job. Although not being located near the ocean, we wanted to know how tourists find the place! In Marc’s own words...

“We’re World famous! Who doesn’t know about us?!” but in reality if you don’t; they’re located behind the only Cathedral in Cornwall! With this excellent service and atmosphere created with the Brand, the chain has recently opened by Truro Plaza Cinema Blend 71 a new Sandwich / Coffee shop. We popped into say hi and the quality is out of this world definitely worth checking out! With sights set in the future of the potential of opening a “Beach Cafe” exciting times on the horizon for the lovely trend setting business. Visit Blend 71 near Truro Plaza

The Grammar School has recently featured on the back of GQ Magazine. Showcasing their “Off The Menu” Cocktails, we’re excited to be able to feature this here too.

Surfed Up from Cornwall...

Cataplana With Sam’s very own recipe, have a go at making this delicious Cataplana - we guarantee it’ll get those tasebuds tingling! This dish relies on a lot of good Cornish rapeseed oil; with the wine, it creates a delicious sauce to soak up with crusty bread.

• 6 large garlic cloves, smashed

This recipe originated in the southern Algarve region, where cooks use a special copper pan called a cataplana that is filled up and put in the oven.

• 1 tblspn plus 1 tspn sweet paprika

We use the cataplana in our woodfire oven which is super hot, but you can cook it on a hob or over a fire in a heavy saucepan.

• Sea salt

This recipe is a generous 2 people portion.

• Handful of chopped tomatoes & red peppers • ½ pint of rapeseed oil • 2 pounds boneless pork loin, or/and chorizo cut into 1/2-inch dice • ½ pint rapeseed oil • 1 medium red onion, finely chopped

Meal on Wheels ...with Sams Vans

A twist to our usual Beach Cafe of the Month, we featured an alternative. Say hello to Sams Vans! WORDS: MELODIE FROM SAMS VANS | EDITED: IAN MICHAEL POGONOWSKI

Winner of the Employer of the Year Cornwall Business awards 2013, Iconically Cornish, Sams Vans embraces everything there is about the County. Alive since 1988, Sam aged 17 created the business. Believing in the values of great food, great atmosphere and great staff along with great locations, Sams Vans offers opportunities to do something cool, creative and collaborative / foodie which you only really get in Cornwall.

The team were asked to describe what it's like working at Sam's - They all agreed the words 'Fun, mad, journey' pretty much summed it up!

Typically Cornish Sam’s has all the positive attributes of a Cornish company – based in a great location Fowey and Polkerris, they embrace the fab attitude to people; welcoming, fun and simply live the ultimately cool lifestyle that people want to be a part of. Coming to Truro this autumn, Sams is growing to cover events as well as festivals and championships.

24 | OUTFIT CORNWALL AUGUST 2013

The Quality Cornwall is a unique county in that it has a plethora of fantastic produce from both land and sea which means fantastic seasonal produce and lots of exciting ways to serve it! So many chefs and people love cooking in Cornwall for the lifestyle and the learning opportunities. The ability to source local, fresh produce and to create new and innovative meals is exciting for the County.

• 2 glasses of dry white wine minus a sip

1 In a mini food processor, combine the garlic with the paprika, crushed red pepper and 2 teaspoons of salt and pulse until finely chopped. Add 1/4 pint of the rapeseed oil and process to a paste.

• 4 handfuls of clams, cockles & Fowey river mussels scrubbed and rinsed • ¼ cup finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

2 Add the remaining 1/4 pint of rapeseed oil and process until smooth. 3 Transfer the marinade to a large bowl, add the pork and chorizo and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate overnight, stirring occasionally. 4 Heat the oil in a large deep skillet. Add the pork, chorizo mix and cook over high heat, stirring occasionally until the pork loses its pink colour, 3 to 4 minutes. 5 Using a slotted spoon, transfer the mixed meat to a large bowl, leaving the oil in the skillet. 6 Add the onion to the pan and cook over high heat, stirring until softened, about 5 minutes. 7 Add the wine and boil until slightly reduced, about 10 minutes. 8 Add the clams, cockles and Fowey river mussels to the pan, cover and cook just until they begin to open, 3 to 4 minutes. 9 Return the meat to the skillet, along with any juices and cook until the shellfish is open and the meat is just cooked through, this will take about 2 minutes longer. 10 Sprinkle with the parsley and serve in deep bowls. 11 Throw in some halved cherry tomatoes and herbs (thyme, basil, flat leaf parsley) 12 Enjoy!

Alan has a firm routed belief in everything with grit. He will fight through hard times, he will fight through injury, and he will fight through the elements to get where he wants. With an affiliation to Cornwall, Alan believes it is the unique environment we have here that creates stars as himself. The Sponsor, the Girlfriend and Family. OUTFIT Cornwall wanted to get personal to unveil the real man behind the boards. When he wasn’t catching the waves we learnt a lot. Mixed with the correct support Alan is very grateful of Animal, he has been led to achieve his dreams with the support and loves this. Alan feels special with the faith Animal have put in as not many companies would offer so much to an athlete.

Take a look at Alan in action on Animal's YouTube Channel

The Surf

The Nights

Hitting the water’s edge to see the surf was amazing. Culminating in the finals was a moment to cherish. If you missed it, check it out next year... There’s nothing better than watching a surf competition with the waves crashing on your legs, hanging with the cheering crowds when your hero wins the competition, listening to the waves roar and the seagulls hoot.

“Ridiculous record in surf Competitions” Ben Skinner was a local highlight for everybody again this year. Extending his ridiculous record in surf competitions,

With massive support from the UK Pro Surf Tour, Boardmasters 2013, landed in Newquay Cornwall. What a festival! From the surf to the skate, the sun and the song, the town was transformed into rapture for party going surfers around the world. OUTFIT Cornwall were there checking out the highlights and took a keen interest in

the activities on the Finals day Sunday where we saw Ben Skinner smash the Longboard Finals.

The Days For one of the UK’s biggest surf festivals there was so much to entertain everybody. The shopping village, the town, the beach, the water, take your pick on what to do. Anything could have happened – even a skating dog?! Check this vid: The Coke Village was in thirsty demand as well. The Davidoff Cool Water surf simulator proved epic fun for everybody seeing Ben Skinner again win the Flow-Rider comp.

“Watergate Bay Rocked the Music Performances”

Ben Howard super-charged the crowd with his amazing set

Come night-time Watergate Bay rocked the music performances out of this world! Headliners included The Vaccines, Basement Jaxx and Ben Howard, we loved everything that was here. Creating a perfect finish for the Sunday line-up we saw fantastic support for Ben Howard’s Only Love with standing ovations from the crowd

Ben Skinner contemplates his strategy on the walk out to the waves

he beat Adam Griffiths to claim the Longboard final, adding to his earlier Davidoff Flow-Rider victory. Check the solidarity of Ben before entering the water in this Vid.

Extras As a side, Surfers Against Sewage were involved with a beach clean making a lovely addition to the festival respect of keeping Britain’s beaches tidy. Families enjoyed the festival too with many playing beach games and enjoying the Surf Skate and BMX. Animal Hero Alan Stokes got in on the action with OUTFIT Cornwall to give his take on the event: ''For me this years event was great, I had my sights firmly focused on a win but unfortunately finished 5th not the result I had hoped for but the surf in August is always going to be pretty small and I was unlucky in a very wave starved heat. I did however extend my ratings lead on the Uk Pro Tour so I’m happy with this going into the back end of the competitive year''. So there we have it, BoardMasters 2013 was a cacophony of Music, Sport, Sun, Sea, Food, Friends and a fabulous Cornish atmosphere. Something you have to check out next year for sure.

Falmouth Week

2013

Article by: Ian Michael Pogonowski Images courtesy of: Animal • McGruber • www.Falmouth.co.uk

A strong focus on activity and sport saw Falmouth Week 2013 explode with the sailing, Gylly Triathlon, Animal bike stunts, parties, carnival, fireworks, science and family get together. 2013 was epic and we were pleased to be there.

The Red Arrows... Unfortunately one of the highlights of this year's Falmouth week, The Red Arrows; didnt materialise due to low cloud disrupting their flightplan down to Cornwall. Despite this the evenings atmosphere seemed to have had it's own injection of rocket fuel and was truly electric. The Limpet Games, Animal Bike Tour, queues for Harbour Lights as always! The sunshine kept everyone in good spirits and it was great to see the family atmosphere in a very busy town. The Fireworks... Friday saw one of the climaxes to the week with a brilliant Fireworks Display. The beats of music from 80’s / 90’s party, with a packed harbour side, the night was perfect with a setting sun, clear sky and moon shining bright. Ending with a gigantic Champagne Shower, the oooo’s from the crowd were testament to the display. The Events... The Night-time events were special again this year. Starting with a free Carnival Party, followed by the likes of Queen Tribute, Rudi’s Message, Pirate Party concluding, the fancy dress and crowds through town made a calm buzz in Falmouth.

40 | OUTFIT CORNWALL AUGUST 2013

The Day Time... The Day Time events didn’t disappoint either. Science in The Square through University of Exeter Cornwall Campus was a highlight, as was the Dragon Boat Race on Sunday. Gylly SLS Triathlon was amazing seeing 5 Gylly Team members called up to represent Team GB (Click to Read). And the Limpet Games was fun to watch. Shops were open later than usual creating a special feel for Falmouth Town.

Animal Bike Tour Photo – Falmouth Saw World Champions show off their awesome skills with incredible MC’ng.

All in all... A wonderful week from Falmouth and from Falmouth Town Manager Richard with all the Falmouth businesses. OUTFIT Cornwall were pleased to see the sports and fitness reaching their full potential. We wonder what will next year bring... Congratulations to Jo Davidson, winner of our Falmouth Week 2013 competition. Thanks for your tweet Jo!

THE CITY

Vs Cornwall BUSINESS

James Firetext Marketing Director “In Cornwall, we're still able to connect to the entire world pretty easily. We have to travel often, but Cornwall is an awesome place to return to. Besides, you can easily grab some time on the sea after work!” Angela Douglas Hedgerow Deli “We all make our own choices in life, location being one of them” OUTFIT Cornwall like to highlight the difference between living in a City compared to Cornwall. We believe there are benefits of both. This month we used Business as the comparison...

Comparing 4 main themes:

• Technology

• Networking

• Life outside the office

• Types of Job

42 | OUTFIT CORNWALL AUGUST 2013

Technology in Cornwall With access to Superfast Broadband. With a hub of tech grads in Cornwall. With the availability of resources, there’s a brilliant opportunity to start / work for a tech business. Technology in a City With better access to wifi in public spots. With plenty of jobs available, there’s opportunity to work on the go and for others. If you want to start your own business technologically there’s little advantage here.

Networking in Cornwall Tuesday evening, the Cornwall Social Media Cafe, meet in a bar, share topics of conversation, share insights of your specialism, swap business cards, keep in touch with contacts. Sound like the city? Networking in a City Tuesday evening, if you’re high in the pecking order of your business you get to network. Wine and dine in a trendy bar, share conversations, gain insights, swap business cards, keep in touch. Life outside the office in Cornwall Live for the Lifestyle. Thursday evening, you rock out the office and are home by 6, go for the evening run you promised yourself this morning along the beach road, then pick your mates up for the beach bbq you planned on your way home. Life outside the office in a City Live for the money. Leaving with the masses at 7 earliest, you stomp on home, with the road-rage and commuter congestion. Too tired to do anything you

park yourself at home, spend an evening on the sofa, repeat and live for the weekend. Types of Job in Cornwall Take your pick, Seasonal, Steady, Self-employed... What do you want to do? Cornwall’s your Oyster. Types of Job in a City Use your qualifications and work down the set path you’ve trained. Competitive, Tiring, Well Paid.

Outfit Cornwall @ Be Active Truro CATS for short, is a Big Society group run for the purpose of transforming anti-social behaviour into positive culture through sport.

Truro came alive with activity! A week on Lemon Quay promoting sport and fitness and health saw people getting active and energised.

Founded in Bude in 2005, CATS aims to transform people’s lives for the better. With the idea that young people also do great things for the community, the disharmony over rebellious youths and positive behaviour was synced.

Organised through Cornwall Sports Partnership and Event Cornwall there were 5 days of stalls, trials, tester sessions, competition and information to entice everybody in, and we hope you got involved?

Promote, Recognise, Reward...

Fused through sport, positivity is spread throughout the communities across the UK, helping people create a better culture and society for Great Britain. CATS recently won a Big Society Award and were presented this by David Cameron at 10 Downing Street. CATS has 13 branches through Devon and Cornwall and look to grow more. Recently CATS invited some Londoners to surf in Cornwall for their contribution to their societies in the City. To read more about CATS Click Here
