THIS IS AUSTRALIA CALLING Eurovision is a strange competition. I’ve stumbled over it playing on SBS on a Sunday night, a peculiar parade of quirky and odd acts vying to win a title for a well written song. The glaring chasms of cross cultural differences exposed through music and dance. It quickly sucks you in though, what starts as a channel flicking drive-by see you lead off from the straight and narrow. Soon you have a favourite, someone to barrack for, it’s easy to get hooked. And once you’re hooked, you’ll even stay and watch the judging as the votes are phones in. This is Serbia calling, this is Norway calling, this is Greece calling. Last year I wanted to go on holiday to somewhere different, I wanted to go somewhere I’d never been. I decided to visit Copenhagen. After my partner and I, booked the trip we realized, we’d be arriving just in time for Eurovision. We didn’t plan to go to Eurovision, but since it was right in front of us, we got some tickets. I learned a lot about Eurovision. Firstly, when you’re in the auditorium, the enthusiasm and hype is phenomenal and under those conditions – every song sounds good.
Secondly, the large majority of people, regardless of their background, will support a bearded Austrian drag queen who is giving it everything she’s got.
GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS

Thirdly, as we joined thousands of drunken multinational revelers in the streets of Copenhagen, no matter what country you’re from people can always put their difference aside and recognize the things we have in common. This year Australia is part of Eurovision, we’re sending Guy Sebastian to represent us. I think he’s a good choice, he famously sang a song from ‘The Sound of Music’, which pretty much made him our first Australian Idol – and the competition is in Austria.

Comedian Rhys Nicholson is returning to Perth with his brand new show ‘Forward’. Rhys chatted to us about the evolution of the Australian comedy scene, touring around the world and what he thinks of your mum (coming to see his show). A husky-voiced Nicholson spoke to OUTinPerth from Sydney, where, like many of his peers, he was recovering from a full month of shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. “I managed to keep my voice for an entire month and now it’s just starting to wain a little bit. But that’s alright. I’ll be ready for Perth.” In Nicholson’s new show ‘Forward’, he ponders what kind of legacy his generation will leave behind. “I think every generation has been thought to be the most useless one so far. I reckon that people were born in the fifties were looking at the people that were born in the seventies and thought that they were going to be end of the world. I think the people that were born in the seventies are doing the same thing to us. I mean also we are also pretty useless as well. But luckily there are the nerds among the useless ones that are going to fix it, hopefully. Also there’s just a lot of dick jokes in there, mainly.” Nicholson’s trademark filth appears to be earning him a varied following. “For some reason people seem to be able to trust me to talk about really horrible things. Like people bring their parents to my shows. I have no idea why. It horrifies me that they do that.” He said himself and Perth export Joel Creasey frequently get younger members of the queer community bringing their families to their shows. “They certainly go to his more than they go to mine. Mine’s a bit more the er, physical side of it that maybe you don’t want your parents to hear about.”

and when you don’t say ‘cunt’ every second word, things start to work out! It’s so weird!” he laughed. “I think I’ve changed a lot. Also, I used to do short joke kinda things and now I tend to tell long stories and I’m just less angry at everything, which is kind of ok.”
Creasey and Nicholson teamed up to perform a show in Colac, a regional town that had previously been the centre of a homophobic scandal. The adventure was recorded in the ABC2 documentary ‘Gaycrashers’. In his regional touring, Nicholson has met a number of queer youths that perhaps don’t enjoy the same levels of visibility as their inner city peers. “There’s always a moment where we’ll be talking to people after the show… I’m like the gayest thing they’ve ever seen and they’re not out yet. In that kind of situation you want to be like ‘It’s okay!’” When it comes to queer visibility, Nicholson said it’s a line of questioning he’s grown accustomed to. “People keep asking me ‘What is it, the rise of the gay comedian?’ and it’s like ‘No, we’ve always fucking been here. It’s just people are more comfortable to talk about it now.’ But no I think the token gay thing doesn’t really happen any more. Even in five years or six years I think it’s changed a bit.” Nicholson partially attributes this change to the growing
accessibility of comedy in Australia. “You used to only be able to watch comedy at the Gala, or at one comedy club that was in Melbourne, and now you can watch it all over the place.” Comedians are now able to more easily find a niche audience, something Nicholson believes can pay off better than appealing to the mainstream. “If you’re doing your mainstream kinda comedy, within the community at least you get called a hack. Being different is the new black.” The comedian himself has also undergone something of an evolution since he first entered the comedy scene. “I was just very aggressive and very vulgar and very angry and very offensive, like not in a funny way. [Laughs] I found a set list for my show and I was very like ‘Eurgh, no’. And then two or three years ago I looked at all my jokes that I spent the last few years writing and just kinda started again, and I’m much happier now, it’s working out much better now. It’s amazing when you don’t do really horrifically offensive and borderline misogynistic jokes,
Nicholson is bringing his trademark wit to Perth alongside a treasure trove of bow ties available for sale after his shows. Craft is something that he said keeps him sane on the road. “I’m quite looking forward to Perth because my boyfriend’s from there originally so all his family and stuff are there. I mean you guys need to have an exchange rate of some sort because a dollar does not mean a dollar over there. Jesus Christ. No, I’m quite looking forward to it. Maybe I’ll go over there and just go insane again. Maybe I’ll just go back to my old self. You don’t know. Maybe I’ll snap after this phone call and think ‘What am I doing with my life? I’ve got to be angry again.’” Catch Rhys Nichsolson in ‘Forward’ at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club as part of the Perth International Comedy Festival from April 30th to May 3rd. Edge Hill University in Lancashire, in England’s north west has become the first known tertiary education facility to offer a course on the art of drag. Available to third year performing arts students, the course is entitled ‘Drag Kings and Drag Queens of Performance’ and will give students the opportunity to analyse the relationships between performance, identity, sexuality and gender, looking closely at costume, lip-syncing and humour. Students will also investigate how drag performance can be used to convey specific cultural agendas, for example HIV/AIDS activism. Senior Lecturer Mark Edward, who devised the course, said the following in a statement:
“Despite the fact that performers have been “dragging up” since Shakespearean times, this module is completely unique in exploring the crossing of boundaries in terms of gender and performance. “As part of undergraduate studies, this module not only explores drag as a highly camp performance art, it also engages with complex gender, feminist and queer theory to explore the social and political implication of “doing gender” in performance. “There’s a lot more to drag studies than wigs, make-up and high heels!” Sophie Joske
DEAN MISDALE Image: Claire Alexander
Dean Misdale, who is often better known as his alter-egoes Feminem, The Future has a new single out this month. Tell us about your new single? ‘Ego’ is a straight up club anthem. It’s the kind of track you put on and just have to dance. As well as the single version there are also four remixes being released so be ready to hear it in the clubs! How did this song come about? The song is a cover of the Skyhooks classic ‘Ego is Not a Dirty Word’. I grew up listening to them as my Dad is a huge music lover and there
On Ego was always music in the house. I’ve been so lucky to work with amazing producer from Melbourne, Sebastian Ivanov, who has given the track a complete makeover. Your alter ego Feminem is very well known, how does it feel going out into the artistic world as Dean? I’ve always performed from a very young age and Feminem really didn’t come into the picture until much later on. So this is really me getting back to my roots and doing what I love, which is singing! ‘Ego’ is available through iTunes.
DOCUMENTARY Seeks Support
A new documentary is seeking community support through a crowd funding campaign. Thomas Banks’ ‘Quest for Love’ is a heart-warming and direct look at modern dating through the eyes of a young gay playwright who has cerebral palsy. A deeply personal story which has been four years in the making, this film aims to smash stereotypes around sexuality and disability. The creative team behind the film are excited to announce that this new documentary has just been successful in the Creative Partnerships Australia MATCH funding program. Check out the Pozible campaign here: http://pozi.be/thomasbanksdoco Bree Maddox and Neil O’Connor from The Court Hotel have signed up to take the Central Park Plunge.
Bree and Neil
Set Their Sights High
Maddox, who owns The Court Hotel persuaded the venue’s manager to join her in abseiling down the side of Central Park, all in the name of charity. Maddox laughed when asked if she’s afraid of heights, “Not yet,” she said, “but by the time I get up there I might be.” Both Maddox and O’Connor both said the last time they each abseiled down something was back in High School. The duo are toying with the idea of completing the task in costume, “You can be Wonder Woman, and I’ll be
Batman” O’Connor suggested to his boss. The endeavour will raise money for the Fiona Wood Foundation. “There are two hundred thousand burns treatments in Australia each year,” Maddox said, “In the last ten years they’ve reduced hospital stays by 50% which is amazing. It’s a foundation that really does deliver.” To support Bree and Neil’s plunge head to https:// centralparkplungefionawoodfdt2015. everydayhero.com/au/cci-adrenalinejunkies

70 years after the conclusion of the World War 2, Terry Larder reflects on the homosexual victims of the holocaust. The taxi’s exhaust spewed out litres of oil and left its mark on the powder white snow as it headed back down the granite mountain. My sneakers struggled to hold a footing as I lumbered clumsily towards the towering entrance that had greeted so many, so many years before. For I had arrived in this snow-covered landscape called Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria, the only concentration camp in Hitler’s birth nation.
Built like a medieval stone fortress with a since-destroyed Nazi swastika over the massive iron gated entrance, this would have been a most terrifying sight for anyone who entered. Many who made this perilous journey up the long winding road to the camp wore the pink triangle. On September 9th 1939, six days after war was declared, the first group of Austrian homosexuals were shipped to the newlyestablished camp, near Linz. The camp was taken over by the Red Cross on 23rd April 1945, after a six year reign of hell on earth. You can’t see the infamous granite stairway until you’ve passed the fading painted wooden barracks. 187 irregularly spaced steps lead from the granite stone pit below to the other building projects above. It was called the “Stairs to Death”.
In double time the prisoners had to carry heavy stones on their backs, those who could not keep pace were kicked back down the steps by guards taking other prisoners with them. If a prisoner got to the top of the stairs without his stone, the SS guards took him to the edge and shoved him off the “Parachute Wall” to his death. Hanging corpses were another reminder that failure to complete the stairs was not an option. Every generation suffers, but the barbarity unleashed by the Third Reich on its own population and that of the occupied territory was on an unprecedented scale. When the war was entering its final phase in 1944 a lot of material was destroyed and so it’s difficult to give a definitive figure on the exact numbers of those who wore the Pink Triangle. Historians estimate 50,000 to 63,000, of which nearly 4,000 were juveniles, were
convicted of homosexuality under Paragraph 175a in the years 1933-1944. Also recorded were the arrests of six lesbians. In Richard Plant’s ground-breaking book, the Pink Triangle, he states that at the time of liberation of camps in 1945: 60% were dead; 26% liberated; and 13% were discharged. According to German law, homosexual ex-prisoners were to be treated as criminals, with some American and British jurists of the liberation armies, on learning that an inmate had been put into a camp for being homosexual, ruled that a camp did not constitute a prison. Therefore, if someone had been sentenced to six years in a prison, had spent three years in jail and three years in a camp, the he still had to finish the sentence in jail after liberation.
last Rudolf Brazda died in 2011 aged 98. 2015 is a year in memory: of the fallen Anzacs 100 years ago, and the end of the WW11 70 years ago. I feel that it’s especially important to remember those who lost their lives in such a harsh landscape as Mauthausen and other Nazi death camps and that they never fade from history. The brave men of the Pink Triangle will remain in my collective thoughts for years to come. Terry Larder Image: Concentration Camp of Mauthausen, May 10, 2014

RUBY RED HOT Bex Chilcott who preforms as Ruby Boots is experiencing lots of firsts this month.
Her debut album has been released to widespread acclaim, but she also is celebrating the first time a drag queen has performed one of her songs. “A friend of mine does drag in Melbourne and she’s a big fan. She did one of my old bluegrass songs and filmed the whole thing and sent it to me.” Chilcott laughed as we caught up in the beer garden of the Rosemount Hotel. She also shares that her friend has one of the coolest drag names that we’ve heard in a while ‘Karen from Finance’. “That’s the first time a drag queen has performed my music,” Chilcott said, “Now my life is fucking complete!” The musician said it felt incredible to complete her first album and incredible that it was coming out. Last year the
singer payed over a hundred shows around Australia and that hard work has seen her get the attention of audiences, radio stations and record labels. “It feels incredible, and incredible that’s it’s finally coming out. It was completed last year, it was finished in January 2014.” Chilcott explained that the albums release took a little longer than anticipated after she was signed to a label. She is excited though that her album is coming out on Lost Highway records, the same label that is home to Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson and a host of respected artists. “It’s my dream label,” Chilcott said, “once we signed we had to find the right timing to put out the record. It’s definitely dragged out. It’s so fucking nerve racking, but I’m excited to have it out. Artistically you need

the audience’s feedback as food. Whether it’s positive or negative you need to hear what people think. “You write because you have to write, and you create because you have to create, but it’s great to gauge how other people feel about it. it’s part of the process, having people hear it. Then you can move on, regardless of the outcome.” “Having people hear the record is like the final piece of the puzzle, and I’ve had this puzzle in front of me for a while, with this once piece missing. I’m really excited for people to hear it.”
The album opens up with ‘Cola and Wine’ an upbeat track that instantly creates a world willed with characters and a call to stop second guessing decisions. ‘Middle of Nowehere” is a slower song with searing guitars that sound like the soundtrack to a sunset. Across the ten tracks there’s a variety of styles of music and an upbeat duet with fellow Australian musician Jordie Lane.
Chilcott disagrees with my description of it as being “quite a country album”. “It depends who’s listening to it… if I want to make a country album I will, but this isn’t a country album. I know what a country an album sounds like.” “It’s not a country album because it’s a lot more diverse than a country album. I think ‘Walk Away’ is a country track, I don’t think ‘Baby Pull Over’ is a country track and ‘Cola and Wine’ isn’t a country track. If it was a country album, they’d all sound like ‘Walk Away’. Chilcott said that she felt the album fell much better into the category of Amerciana,
but she appreciates other people’s viewpoints. “You can call it a country album if you like,” she laughed, “I’m not offended by that.” Last year Ruby Boots track ‘Oh Lover’ became a high rotation hit on local community radio. I asked Chilcott if she had any insight into what make a song become an audience favourite.
The albums is laid back and Chilcott’s vocals are crisp and clear allowing you to appreciate every lyric. It’s style of music that is timeless.
“You can’t make people like a song,” she said, “You might like it and the next person will hate it. I think if there’s enough people who like it then great.”
On the closing track “Long Time Coming’ Chilcott sings about a relationship breakdown. It’s a song filled with warm organs, steady drums and a forlorn, but powerful vocal.
When it comes to writing Chilcott said she tries to write a lot revealing that when it came time to record the album she had over thirty songs to choose from. Writing songs however requires a certain mental space, something that doesn’t come easily when you’re a self managed musician organising

One of these organisations is the Open Arms Fellowship, an affirming and Pentecostal church that prides itself on including all members of the community. Pastor Graham Douglas-Meyer shared with us some of the history of the church. “The whole purpose of setting it up was basically because there wasn’t a Pentecostal GLBTI affirming or welcoming church in Perth. There was a particular gap for a group of people who were very excluded from the churches that they had belonged to in the past.” he said. Developing an inclusive Christian environment is a cause that’s close to Douglas-Meyer’s heart. He documented his experiences reconciling his faith and his. “Having been through periods of depression in my life and in particular after coming out, and having psychologists turn to you and say ‘Well, maybe you should just drop that’, in relation to spirituality and particularly in relation to Christianity. It just didn’t feel very right.” he explained. Douglas-Meyer said he’s committed to challenging stereotypes. “I’d be the only openly gay, openly HIV positive, openly married pastor in Perth. Damien and I have been married for just over eleven years now and we’ve been together for thirteen so we break the stereotype for a lot of people, in relation to homosexuals, anyway.” Come June, the church will be celebrating its tenth anniversary. It’s part of an international movement of LGBTI-friendly congregations, and has a sister church in the New Covenant Church in Sydney, led by Pastor Sam Grebert, who DouglasMeyer counts as a friend and source of inspiration. “The wonderful thing about it is that in his church the trans community is welcome, and more than anything that’s one of my desires here for Perth, is to ensure that trans people realise there’s a church where they are not only welcome, but they’re affirmed for who they are, not for what people think they should be.” According to Douglas-Meyer, the priority of Open Arms is to facilitate a relationship with Christ for anyone wishing to pursue it. “I believe in healing, I believe in people being saved. I believe in people being able to have their complete life turned around as a result of their spiritual experience.” Find out more about the Open Arms Fellowhip at openarmsfellowship.org Sophie Joske

DIY: Garage Sale Treasure Hunt When you’ve got a free weekend, browse Gumtree for listings of garage sales close to you. Make a list of promising looking jumbles and get ready for a road trip through the mysterious underworld of Perth’s second hand stuff. Unicycles, records, and weird ornaments await you amongst a sea of other untold treasures. It’s an adventurous and inexpensive way to get to
know someone, journeying through the suburbs and seeing which domestic peculiarities catch your date’s eye. If you find yourselves any good music or obscure board games then you’ve got evening entertainment sorted. Crafternoon There’s a reason that pottery scene from ‘Ghost’ is a classic. Craft brings people together. It’s just science. Getting crosslegged on your living room floor to bust out the glitter and PVA glue is a great way for a couple of wild-eyed lovebirds to get creative and shed their inhibitions. Plus, there’s nothing like the feeling that you’ve made something together. I understand that’s why parenting is becoming so popular these days. Nerdy Picnic A picnic is a date classic for a number of reasons: there’s the beauty of nature, the beauty of food, plus, you get to sit down and not move for a while. What could possibly improve on this perfect picture of romance more than the magic of literature? There’s something to be said for being able to enjoy a comfortable silence, and afternoon of reading together is the perfect way to spend time together without putting too much pressure on conversation. If you’re looking for chilled way to enjoy each other’s company, this is a great way to take advantage of a sunny afternoon. Three Course Restaurant Crawl If you’ve already wined and dined and want to take it to the next level, make a night of it by spreading your culinary experience over three different venues. Choose a suburb brimming with options, like Leederville or Northbridge, and start with a drink and nibbles at your favourite watering hole, move on to a feast in a trendy foodery and top it off with dessert a short walk away. Hopping from restaurant to restaurant turns a meal into a journey and lets you see the city in between mouthfuls. For a more low key option, take a café crawl down Beaufort Street. Actual Treasure Hunt A treasure hunt is the perfect combination of surprise, planning, and knowing what your partner likes. This is why some variation of this is involved in every second marriage proposal that goes viral on the internet. However, the key to bringing this out of the cheese factory and into the realm of true romance is by making it particular to you and your partner. Choose your medium: Snapchat, Instagram, handwritten notes, there are so many ways to go. Meet in a bookshop? Hide a clue in their favourite book. Meet over Facebook? Message them clues over the course of the day until they meet you at their favourite restaurant. Get your friends involved. Get your dog involved. This is some commitment ceremony-level romance. culture One of the most highly anticipated works in Black Swan Theatre Company’s 2015 season is ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’, David Mamet’s iconic play about the cutthroat world of real estate. Actor Damian Walshe-Howling, known for many onscreen roles including ‘Underbelly’ and ‘Janet King’, is making his debut with the company taking “Rehearsals have been great, I love all the other actors. I really admire all of them. It’s become such a cliché to say that but on the role of smartit’s fantastic working with Peter Rowsthorn and Luke Hewitt, talking up and comer Steve Turner and Will O’Mahony and Ben [Mortley]. …It’s been Ricky Roma. He caught so great. Kate seems to really be enjoying herself and I feel up with OUTinPerth to like we’re a good group, you know. We’re really enjoying each share all the gossip from other’s company. That’s almost half the battle won, when you’re doing theatre.” the rehearsal room. ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ is one of the most well-loved and frequently produced plays in the Western World. As well as an all-female version staged in Perth in 2012 and a popular film adaptation, it also made a recent return to Broadway starring Al Pacino. Walshe-Howling had an opportunity to talk shop with Bobby Canavale, a personal friend of his who played Ricky Roma in that particular revival. “I think I actually knew that he’d done the role before I got the role but then when he was out in Australia just recently we caught up. We had dinner and we picked each other’s brains, it was great, he was so generous. We just talked about it, we talked about his interpretation and every actor can have a different interpretation of things to a certain degree but it was funny, we both had quite similar ideas. I mean Mamet writes so beautifully, there’s so much that’s universal in it.” Walshe-Howling said that the unique, punchy style of dialogue is one of the factors that contribution to the play being so influential in the theatrical world. “It’s sharp, it’s laser sharp but at the same time it’s like dropping a whole bag of marbles and having to pick them up. There’s excitement in it. You don’t know what’s going to happen next. And I think there’s something really naughty about the amount of swearing in it.” he laughed. Many would feel daunted at the prospect of taking on a prominent role in such a seminal play, but for WalsheHowling, it’s a thrilling opportunity. “I’m like ‘fucking bring it on’. I just say ‘Let’s go, you know.’ I just think it’s such an opportunity to do something that is such an incredible piece of work and I don’t take it lightly, that’s for sure. I don’t have trepidation. Am I nervous? Of course, I’m human, you know. But I also know that the characters in the play are nervous. Really, at the heart of it, there’s so much beauty in this play because there’s so much vulnerability. Because why else are you that desperate? You’re only that desperate when you’re that vulnerable. Unless you really explore those realms of life, I don’t think you live fully, you know.” Sophie Joske Credit: PRIMOLifeCrib Creative

One of the exciting new works coming to The Blue Room Theatre this season is ‘Once We Were Kings’, an exploration of identity from theatre company Third Culture Kids. Director Mustafa Al Mahdi spoke to us about the play’s extensive development and collaborative approach. ‘Once We Were Kings’ draws inspiration from fantasy and real life experiences and sheds light on what it means to be queer and Muslim in Australia today. Al Mahdi said that when he was approached by writer Dure Khan, the project was well underway. “Dure’s actually been working on it for seven years already. She started working on it I think around the time she came to Australia. It was her way of coping and finding her place here. She met with different migrants and different queer people in the community, she shared their stories, and all the stories and experiences found their way into the play.” Khan is originally from Pakistan, but has included the experiences of a number of migrants from around the world in the project. Al Mahdi explained that the actors took on an important role in developing the script, offering their own perspectives on the issues of isolation, belonging and identity. “The way the script is formed, it follows four characters, but the characters, they’re not really actual people but rather metaphors of experiences, so the script follows four different types of experiences and how people from a queer background or a Muslim background coped with these experiences so
that audiences can identify with any one of those and find themselves in that. The characters themselves, some of them are quite confident, some of them are empowered, some of them are very closed off and doubtful, so there’s all of these different experiences and types of people onstage.” Al Mahdi said that the ensemble used the term ‘queer’ to denote a range of experiences that defied social and cultural norms. “We have for example one of the characters, he’s a male that shows emotion, that shows emotion, empathy, that sort of thing. That in some cultures is seen as unacceptable.” Alongside the theatrical performance is an art exhibition featuring artists from various locations including Pakistan, Kenya and Iran, some of whom now reside in Perth. Al Mahdi said he was encouraged by the response the project gained online went rehearsals began taking place. “While we were working on the project and looking for a cast and that sort of thing, we started getting inboxed on Facebook from all of these other Muslim queer people that we don’t know existed. And this flare, they kind of saw it as this lighthouse that they all started walking towards. We were really overwhelmed, we would meet people who would be like ‘Oh we didn’t know you exist!’ Even Perth is so small but they’re all usually buried there, and they keep to themselves, they like to keep quiet and not rock the boat, but when they saw this they were like ‘Oh wow, it’s our chance, the spotlight is on us for this fraction of time’.” ‘Once We Were Kings’ is at The Blue Room Theatre from May 12th to 30th. Suicide Prevention charity It Gets Better Australia (IGBA) has explained a discrepancy between their public activities and their formal reports to Australia’s governing body for charities by explaining that a campaign run by the organisation’s CEO was not an official fundraising campaign. In 2013 the organization appeared to run a fundraising campaign through the crowd sourcing website Pozible. The campaign asked people to pledge money in return for merchandise promoting the organisation. The campaign raised $8,100, with 94
Parker said at the time the organisation was very young and without significant funding and was largely run by volunteers. “Since 2013, we have been fortunate enough to gain the support of sponsors that have donated both funds and in kind support, which has meant that we haven’t had any need to carry out further fundraising of this nature.” Parker responded to OUTinPerth’s inquiry. Parker said the organisation took its obligations as a charity seriously. Graeme Watson
Life Sentences for Killers
of Warren Batchelor Two men found guilty of the brutal murder of gay man Warren Batchelor have been sentenced to life imprisonment. The pair will both have to serve a minimum of twenty one years before being eligible for parole. Daniel Wade Taylor and Mark Jones were found guilty of murder last month. The former DJ, who was well known in Sydney’s gay venues, was beaten to death by the pair in November 2013. Taylor and Jones confronted Batchelor and another man as they engaged in consensual sex inside a toilet cubicle. The court heard that Taylor and Jones, who did not previously know each other, had met at the Middleswan Reserve where they were both camping. Angered by men having sex around the park and within the public toilets they teamed up and attacked the two men. In sentencing Taylor and Jones Supreme Court Justice Lindy Jenkins said the two men had a gross disregard for Mr Batchelor’s life, and that they had both assaulted him and left

him to die. The judge declared both men had shown little remorse for their actions. Justice Jenkins said their brutal beating of Mr Batchelor was motivated by prejudice and hostility and she entirely rejected their assertion that they had been provoked. Prosecutors had argued that they men had launched a vigilante style attack to rid the area of gay men. Justice Jenkins said she would not go as far to describe the men as vigilantes. Outside the Supreme Court a representative for the Batchelor Family read a statement; “Knowing our beloved Warren, he would have forgiven them already. Whist we pray for them to be rehabilitated and, if ever, returned to the community as better persons, we remain broken for the rest of our lives. Our thanks again go out to everybody.” The men’s sentences were backdated to the time of their arrest in 2013 making them eligible for release in 2034. Graeme Watson

Plibersek Calls for
Binding Vote on Marriage Equality Tanya Plibersek, the Deputy leader of the Labor party has called for the party to adopt a binding vote on the issue of marriage equality at its upcoming national conference. The move would force all Labor MP’s to support marriage equality if legislation was introduced in parliament. The move has been supported by Catherine King, the opposition’s health spokesperson and Andrew Barr, the Chief Minister of the ACT. Right wing union leader Joe de Bruyn has described the suggestion as “foolish” and
the suggestion has also been criticised by Liberal Senator Dean Smith. The gay Senator from Western Australia has declared that a binding vote on Labor’s side would stop progress on the issue within the Liberal party. “If the ALP was to adopt a binding vote on same-sex marriage then the issue of a conscience vote in the Liberal party is dead,” Senator Smith told Fairfax Media.

Study Shows Social
Isolation in Outer Suburbs A new study undertaken by researchers at the University of Sydney has shed a light on levels of social isolation for lesbian, gay and bisexual Australians living in inner metro, outer metro and rural areas.
people living in outer metropolitan areas of major cities showed comparable levels of disadvantage.
The study had 1306 participants from various urban and rural locations across Australia, all identifying as lesbian, gay or bisexual.
“I think there’s probably a number. One is that in inner city areas of major cities there’s well-established gay communities and that provides connectedness and social support. And outside of those areas, in suburban areas and outer metropolitan areas of major cities, there isn’t that type of support and I think where there’s less visibility, there’s often more prejudice. I think that’s probably the main explanation.”
The survey reported that subjects residing in rural-remote localities reported significantly increased concealment of sexuality from friends, more concern regarding disclosure of sexuality, less involvement and friendships with other LGB people, and amongst men, higher levels of internalised homophobia, than those residing in inner-metropolitan areas. One of the unexpected findings from the survey was that those living in outer metropolitan areas reported higher levels of social isolation than both their inner city and rural counterparts. James Morandini, the University of Sydney PhD candidate (pictured) spoke to OUTinPerth about the results of the study. “We were interested in quantitatively looking at the idea that lesbian, gay and bisexual people living in rural remote areas would experience greater discrimination, greater levels of perceived stigma, and greater concealment than their peers living in inner city areas. So that’s what we were expecting to find, and we did find that. The unexpected finding was that we also found that LGB
Morandini said he had considered a number of possible causes for this finding.
“We actually found that although LGB people in rural, remote areas reported greater levels of concealment of their sexuality and more concern about disclosing their sexuality, they didn’t report greater levels of social isolation than their inner metro peers. But the outer metropolitan individuals did report greater social isolation and we thought that that might be because those in outer metropolitan areas don’t have some of the protective factors that those in remote rural areas do have in these kind of close knit, cohesive communities.”

Peter Barr, RTRfm’s former breakfast host has ten years of being on air behind him, and he’s now ready to take on a new form of performance. He’s one of seven brave music industry professionals leaving the studio behind and attempting stand up comedy for the first time at Perth Comedy’s Festival’s ‘Comedy Virgins’. Barr caught up with Sophie Joske and shared his initial reaction to being offered the gig. “I didn’t say yes immediately because the thought does terrify me. But I took about as long to think about it as the gig will be, for each person doing it and it didn’t seem that long, lying on my bed staring at my phone. But I think it’s going to seem a lot longer onstage than doing it.” Each fledgling comedian will be given five minutes to live or die by the mic. Barr said he’s hoping his experience making wisecracks on breakfast radio will serve him well. “. I’m not a stand up comedian by any stretch of the imagination but when I was on air doing breakfast there was a funny show sometimes, so that probably puts me in a slightly different category to some of the others, they’re just straight up musos, for example. We know they’re not funny pricks.” He laughed.

Tina Harrod is one of the many talented jazz musicians on the bill for the Perth Jazz Festival at the end of the month. Harrod attracted a lot of critical acclaim with her album ‘Worksongs’ which featured her interpretations of songs from artists including Nick Drake, Portishead and Bob Dylan. She’s also a successful songwriter with four albums of her own material. Harrod told OUTinPerth when deciding which songs to perform she has a pretty simple measure, whether it be her own music or another artists. “I’ve just got to love it, but that involve a number of components in a song. Obviously a well written meaningful lyric and also a well written and arranged song, and well record and performed is what I look for in anything I want to perform.” Harrod said. The singer’s most recent work is ‘The Revolution is Eternal’ an album which the singer agrees was a bit of a departure from her usual sound. “My last album was an album that was a little bit of a departure from what I’m known for.” Harrod said of the record that was filled with funk, soul and blues sounds. At the time of its release, despite wide spread praise, Harrod said she didn’t fee she’s made her best album yet. She’s currently back in the studio with her producer Stu Hunter working on a follow up.

Tiny Parades “We’re in the studio writing a bunch of songs and building the songs in the studio, which is something I haven’t done for many years.” Harrod said. The singer’s laughed when we ask if this one will be her best one. “Who knows, until it’s out there? You’re always striving to create something good. There’s a lot of great music that comes before me and the people I work with, incredible music, so you always have in the back of your mind when you’re writing that you want to make something great.” Harrod said, “It’s not easy to come up with something great.” Harrod said the band she’s bringing to the Perth Jazz Festival is amazing. ‘Tom O’Halloran, who lives in Perth will be on piano, Jonathon Schwartz on double bass and Evan Mannell on drums.” Harrod said they would be playing soul and jazz, but everything will have a modern twist. The Perth Jazz Festival is on from May 29-32 May 2015, Tina Harrod is playing at The Ellington on May 30, and in the Perth Cultural Centre on May 31. www.perthinternationaljazzfestival.com.au Graeme Watson

‘Equus’, Peter Schaeffer’s play about a psychiatrist treating a teenage boy with a religious and pathological fascination with horses has been an intriguing work since it was first performed over forty years ago. When the play was first performed in Western Australia, one performance in Geraldton was interrupted by police who arrested the lead actor for public nudity. More recently it’s drawn attention as Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-Harry Potter performance. The Hogwarts alumni starred alongside the late Richard Griffiths in a revival on Broadway and in London’s West End. This month Melville Theatre are staging a production with Oliver Kaiser in the lead role. Kaiser shared with OUTinPerth that he definitely had some hesitation before taking on the role. “There was definitely hesitation, I didn’t have too much time to look into it before I was at the audition. The director Lars Jesen encouraged me to audition for it and suddenly there I was.” Kaiser said, “A friend of mine did a scene for an audition and I was familiar with that, but when I read the whole play I realised it would be very challenging.” “What I’m finding challenging… is that in the role of Alan you’re talking to people at different times, it’s non-linear, so you’re constantly switching between different periods. “We haven’t made a decision on the nudity aspect yet,” Kaiser said. “It only works if everyone feels comfortable and confident.” Kaiser said he’d had to stress to friends that the play is so much more than the show which Daniel Radcliffe appeared naked in. “We shouldn’t classify it like that, it’s so much more.”

Director Lars Jensen agrees that the play is a big undertaking for a community theatre group. “It’s a big mouthful, one of the really good things about ‘Equus’ is it reads really well off the page, it’s really engaging.” “It hasn’t really dated,” Jensen said, “I guess the reason it hasn’t dated is that it asks some very essential questions that go for all ages. It asks the question ‘What is normal” and is it ok for us to restore to people to normal when they find something which society deems to be not normal.” ‘Equus’ plays at 8pm May 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 with a 2pm matinee May 17. Tom Ballard’s heading back to Perth with his new stand up show which takes its starting point from an unpleasant interaction he had with a taxi driver. “It’s about something that happened to me in a taxi in Newcastle in New South Wales,” Ballard explained when he chatted to OUTinPerth on the phone, “It was late at night, and raining, so I needed a taxi. I hailed one, it pulled and up and the driver recognised me and was homophobic…. And it was weird.” “It just got me thinking about all those other little moments of homophobia I’ve experience in taxis and also generally in life and where I’m at as a young man. It’s hilarious, naturally – that’s the most important part.” Ballard said he’s not surprised to encounter homophobia: “Obviously we’ve come a long way, and I say in the show that I’m extremely lucky that no one’s ever physically harmed me, and I’ve had loving parents and friends since I’ve come out, I’m lucky. “But the nature of being queer in society is you’re still faced every now and again with some shitty attitudes. I think the majority of the audience who come to a comedy show know that there’s still discrimination out there, but to talk about it on stage I find cathartic and I think it helps to give an example of every day homophobia that’s just wearing you down, it can be like the death of a thousand cuts.” Ballard said. Ballard first came to national attention as the co-host of Triple J’s Breakfast program, a role he stepped away from nearlytwo years ago.
and all the cool people at Triple J. “I miss the listeners and I miss knowing what’s going on in the world, especially with music. I turn on Triple J now and say ‘who are all these bands?’, and I certainly miss the regular money. “But I’ve gotten to do lots of amazing things, I got to do my own TV show, and I’ve been able to tour more, and I’ve had the energy to sit down and write and have a crack at some other projects, and I’m heading off to the Edinburgh Fringe. I couldn’t have done any of those thing while I worked at Triple J.” Ballard said. Last year Ballard fronted the ABC TV show ‘Reality Check’ a weekly look into the world of reality TV. Sadly the show is not returning this year. “Surely that’s Tony Abbott’s greatest crime”, Ballard lamented, “Not giving the ABC a big enough budget.” Catch Tom Ballard’s show ‘Taxis, Rainbows and Hatred’ at the Perth Comedy Festival 13-16 May. Tickets are available through Ticketek. Graeme Watson

culture Gadsby said that work on season three is coming along nicely. “We’re under the pump. We start filming pretty soon!” In the show, Gadsby portrays the despondent Hannah, who befriends Josh’s mother in a psychiatric hospital. Behind the scenes, Gadsby said she’s also responsible for Hannah’s journey and character development. But how much do the fictional Hannah and real Hannah have in common? “There’s no acting. It’s a documentary.” Gadsby said. “She is me. It’s really me not doing much but with a sad face. Which is just me.” People seem to be enjoying Gadsby’s sad face, as she sardonically puts it. Her show ‘Donkey’ has been getting rave reviews at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, where it’s been running for four weeks. Gadsby says a weekend in Perth will be a delightful respite after the madness of a month long festival. “You’re just going to get such the best of me because I’ll have had a few weeks off, I’ll be itching to get out of Melbourne, I’ll come across, I’ll enjoy the sun, I’ll catch up with my brother and I’ll be happy to be onstage.” She mused. “It doesn’t often happen but I’m projecting that. It’s going to be a cracker.”
Comedian Hannah Gadsby is returning to Perth this month to perform a show entitled ‘Donkey’ to her devoted west coast fans. Gadsby took some time out of her busy schedule to chat to OUTinPerth from the writer’s room of ABC2 show ‘Please Like Me’, where she’s contributing to the cult favourite alongside its principle creator and fellow comedian, Josh Thomas.
Gadsby offered an explanation for her show’s mysterious title. “I’m the donkey. Actually I really wanted to talk about donkeys in art because they get a bad rap. They’re known as the idiots and the fools. I don’t mind if idiots and fools are called idiots and fools but don’t bring the donkey into it, the donkey’s quite a nice animal. Anyway, then I got sidetracked from that idea. The show’s not about that at all. Then it was going to be about my bike, which I called Donkey, and then I didn’t- it’s not about that at all. And then I got
a diagnosis of ADHD which explains why I don’t stick to my ideas. So it’s about ADHD. Trying to explain it to a room full of people who are generally not convinced it actually exists.” The diagnosis comes as a relief for Gadsby, who explained that attention deficit issues are often victim to misconceptions and frequently associated with hyperactive children even though it’s a condition that stays with you throughout adulthood. “It doesn’t go away and often you don’t get it diagnosed because the H can be a misnomer, not everyone has to be hyperactive. I’m certainly not. I’m inattentive. I’m a daydreamer, space cadet. Mouth breather, you know the one. Lots of thoughts going on but no evidence.” she laughed. Gadsby said the diagnosis provided an explanation for certain behaviours that’s allowed her to approach life a little differently. “I don’t think people who’ve known me over the years will go ‘Oh, she’s changed dramatically’ but certainly there is some sort of transition going on. Which is nice, it’s exciting. I’m certainly not hating myself as much as I used to. Now I make sense.” While some may find it uncomfortable to speak about issues like their mental health and sexuality onstage, for Gadsby it’s all part of a day’s work. “It’s just what’s going on. I don’t really speak for much of the year and then I turn it into a show and it makes sense.” Hannah Gadsby is performing at the Octagon Theatre on May 15th and 16th as part of the Perth International Comedy Festival. Tickets available from www.perthcomedyfestival.com Sophie Joske
