BACK TO BUSINESS In April after fourteen years of bringing news and culture to WA’s LGBTIQ+ community, OUTinPerth was forced to stop the presses when the company that owned the magazine closed down. Now we, the team who created the magazine and online content, are ensuring that OUTinPerth remains being an independent Perth based LGBTIQ+ voice in the Australian media. We have been inundated with messages of support from the community and our allies and we couldn’t be more thankful. Since we launched our crowdsource campaign at GoFundMe we’ve managed to raise enough money to put out the edition we were working on, and set up a new company to publish this issue and future editions. Since we obtained the rights to the publication, we’ve been working hard to bring OUTinPerth back to its full strength. We want to continue delivering content that is community focused and engaging, made locally from a Western Australian perspective.

05

Our vision for OUTinPerth’s relaunch is a greater dedication to local stories, culture and community groups. We want to collaborate with local writers, photographers, artists and advocates to share unique local LGBTIQ+ experiences and knowledge. To deliver a first class service to you our readers, the local community and community groups, we’re asking for help. We need assistance to buy computers, cameras, software and web services that will allow us to generate the publication for years to come.

Reimagining Human Rights in Australia

culture

Professor Gillian Triggs, President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, visited Perth in May and delivered the inaugural Curtin University Human Rights Lecture. Speaking to the theme ‘Re-imagining Human Rights in Australia’ Professor Trigg cited increased education about the topic as an essential element in improving Australia’s understanding of how human rights should be recognised and how laws should be applied. Professor Triggs covered a wide range of topics including the need for a bill of rights in Australia, a gradual drift towards isolationism and rejection of international laws. It was suggested education could improve all Australian’s understanding of what human rights are. Professor Triggs said the ideals of human rights had been achieved for most Australians, most of the time. Yet there were still vulnerable groups in Australian society for whom basic human rights were sometimes still an aspiration. Australia’s leading voice on human rights listed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with disabilities, older Australians, asylum seekers and the LGBTI community, as groups of people who still faced challenges and needed protections. “I suggest that Australia fails to meet our international human rights obligations under the treaties to which we are a party.” Professor Triggs said. Professor Triggs said there are areas where Australia is in serious breach of human rights laws and we can no longer stand alongside comparable nations. Highlighting the growing number of suicides of refugees held in detention or in the community and the ongoing detention of a large number of asylum seekers, Professor Triggs said Australia had a stark reminder of the fundamental right not to be held indefinitely. Noting that the right to a trial and non-arbitrary detention is listed in the Magna Carta, Professor Triggs stated to the audience; “These are not modern ideas, they are ideas fundamental to every legal system in the world.” Professor Triggs drew comparison between recent court cases in Papua New Guinea regarding the detention of people on Manus Island and a case in Australia relating to detention of people on Nauru and noted that very different outcomes resulted. “Just two weeks ago the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea found unanimously that detention without trial is contrary to their constitutional right to the protection of liberty, and the court called on the government to ban detention on the island,” Professor Triggs said. “But some weeks earlier the Australian High Court ruled, in the M68 case on the constitutional

validity of the government’s migration act – relying on the removal of asylum seekers to Nauru for processing – were being deprived on their liberty. The court found that the legislation was constitutionally valid, so long as the detention was reasonably necessary for the purposes of processing.” Continue next page

Professor Triggs said it was notable that none of the seven judges made any reference to Australia’s international obligations. The Human Rights Commission’s president questioned why one decision was made under Papua New Guinea’s more modern 1975 constitution, while another outcome was the result under Australia’s older constitution. “Why is it that Australian law fails to provide protection for fundamental freedoms when we are such a successful multi-cultural democracy with such a strong common law system that values the rule of law?” Professor Triggs asked. Professor Triggs pinpointed 2001 as a turning point for how Australia approached human rights. The professor argued that following the ‘Children Overboard’ controversy, the Tampa saga and the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon in the United States, Australia has changed the way it looks at human rights. “What we have seen is a conflation by political leaders of these questions of asylum seeker rights and of fear of terrorism. Used and abused I believe throughout the world, but perhaps especially in Australia. “What we have seen is a steady growth in federal executive and ministerial discretion that is not for practical purposes review-able by courts. “Parliament has failed in its responsibilities to provide a check on the executive power of government, and it’s diminished the judicial role of judges, threatening the principle of the separation of powers and distorting the ‘checks and balances’ between executive government, parliament and the courts.” Professor Triggs said. Professor Triggs highlighted that the High Court’s Chief Justice Robert French had recently described the slow erosion of traditional rights and freedoms as “a death by a thousand cuts”. “Many such encroachments, taken individually, arguably have little effect. Taken cumulatively over time and across state, territory and commonwealth jurisdictions they can be the death by a thousand cuts of significant aspects of those rights and freedoms.” Chief Justice Robert French said at his State of the Judicature address.

The head of the Australia’s Human Rights Commission said Australian exceptionism had led to the slow and gradual slide of executive overreach in the absence of judicial oversight. “The failure over many decades of effort to implement Australia’s human rights obligations into its domestic law has left a legacy of isolation from global human rights laws and jurisprudence. “Australia’s approach to human rights stands in stark contrast to other comparable legal systems where human rights commits are reflected in domestic laws, in their constitutions and in bills of rights that limit the power of parliament to authorise the executive to act inconstantly with the nation’s international obligations.” Professor Triggs said historically Australia had a proud history of being at the forefront of developing international human rights law and it was only in the last 15 years that the country had taken a different approach. Concern was also raised about Australia’s reaction to criticism from the United Nations, where issues raised were either rejected or simply noted. Professor Triggs said “noted” was diplomatic code for saying “nothing much is going to happen.” Professor Triggs said Australia needs to re-open discussions about creating a legislative charter for rights. While a change to constitution was unlikely, Professor Triggs said there were other legislative pathways open to Australian governments. “It’s not a popular issue.” the professor said, “Australian’s have been sadly mislead into believing that if we had a charter of rights at the federal level that that would give our judges an unrestricted right to rule and be activist judges to create new laws.” Professor Triggs said many Australian parliamentarians highlight the case in America where same sex marriage was created through the Oberfegell decision and have concerns that a bill of rights would lead to judges making decisions that could have a national significance. Professor Triggs said a discussion about how we bring Australia into the international human rights discussion is essential and increased education on the topic is needed to facilitate the conversation.

PrEP: Go Get It Millions (and millions) of dollars are being spent in the Eastern states of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, to provide free PrEP to 8,400 homosexually active men willing to be part of research projects. Meanwhile, over here there isn’t a cent of additional investment in what most now agree is a ‘game changer’ in terms of driving down new HIV infections in our community. So let’s take stock of where we are. WA remains the only jurisdiction where the Government has issued an Operational Directive regarding the prescribing of PrEP. This is more than symbolism. It means that doctors employed by the Government who are specialised in prescribing HIV medicine (S100) can and should prescribe PrEP to patients who meet the eligibility criteria. These criteria are the same as those used to qualify guys over East to access the various trials. Already there are over 100 guys in WA who have accessed PrEP in this way, and those numbers increase week by week. And, by the way, the Kirby Institute calculate that there are between 1100 and 1200 of us in WA who should at least be considering it. But even if we achieved that target, obviously not all of us would be amongst those that Kirby calculated, so the real target for PrEP users would have to be closer to 15-1800 if we want to achieve the goal of substantially eliminating new infections by 2020. We will also need to achieve those numbers within the next two years. There is much talk about how expensive PrEP is, and how that cost acts as a significant barrier to those needing it now. In reality, the personal importation scheme and prescribing channels in Perth that are promoted by the WA AIDS Council and M Clinic result in an annual cost to the user of around $700 depending on the exchange rate. That’s four quarterly payments of $175. It’s not nothing, sure, but I suspect that there are many more of us who would prefer not to pay for it than there are who genuinely can’t afford it. Cost is a barrier for some though, and we are collaboratively developing ways of addressing this in a fair and equitable manner.

It has been widely publicised that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) have approved the use of Truvada® for PrEP. Truvada®’s manufacturer has already made a submission to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) for the drug to be listed in the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Success here would result in PrEP being universally ‘free’ with a prescription and available from local pharmacies. It’s hoped that PBAC will make their recommendation as early as July, and that the Federal Cabinet (whoever that turns out to be) will consider listing shortly afterwards. That may well be optimistic if past experience is our guide, so in the meantime we need to continue doing whatever we can to encourage and assist those who need PrEP to get PrEP. On the face of it, it seems that 8,400 guys over East are well ahead of us over here. This isn’t necessarily completely true. Whilst we are worse off by $700+ per year if we buy it ourselves, our experience with PrEP will not be confined within a research project. This means less time and energy having to meet research requirements and more time (and energy) to enjoy the added security that this form of prevention offers. There is also the cost to community. The research projects in the East aren’t really going to generate additional or useful insights. Providing PrEP under the auspices of a research or so-called demonstration project adds cost, potential delay and complexity for what for many men should be a relatively straightforward decision they are capable of making themselves once armed with all the information they need. As an example, the Queensland Government has budgeted $6.0 million dollars to provide PrEP for 2,000. We at the WA AIDS Council unsuccessfully asked the Government to consider $84,000 to help us get 450 men started on PrEP, which if ramped up to 2,000 would have been less than $400,000. That wouldn’t solve all the issues, but it would have helped us get moving faster than we can at the moment. So the bottom line is, it isn’t particularly difficult to get PrEP in WA and it isn’t particularly expensive. It doesn’t even require much effort beyond making an appointment with a prescriber. It will be fantastic news if the Feds list it on the PBS and make it effectively free, but we don’t need to wait for that.

There is a note of caution though. We believe the decision to use PrEP is and should be a personal decision of our own, but it really is important to do so with medical advice. Although rare, there are medical reasons why PrEP should not be used by some of us for reasons of bone density or kidney function for example. These need to be properly checked out first. Some of us may experience side effects of the drug, but again this is rare. Nonetheless, if we think we need PrEP we can and should be doing something about it. For more information on PrEP, how to get it and how to access financial assistance to purchase it, visit mclinic. org.au and click PREP. Sponsored

PHSG: MAKING A DIFFERENCE

news

Over the last two-and-a-half years, Perth Homeless Support Group (PHSG) have been offering comfort and compassion to the homeless of our capital city and its surrounds. Founded by partners and owners of Hair Boss salon Ron Reid and Michael Edwards, the community powered group have just received their first van from Ruah Community Services – a powerful tool for the grassroots organisation that grew from an incredible community spirit. “This started on the 21st of January 2014,” Reid tells me, “It was something that started when we would go into the city on a Friday night to have a meal together and we started noticing there were a lot more people begging on the street.” Reid says the ages varied from 12-year-old kids right up to people in their 60’s and 70’s, including people of all backgrounds and genders. “We knew that there were other originations that were doing things but I didn’t personally have knowledge, so I just set up a Facebook page and call it Perth Homeless Support Group. I added a few friends on a Wednesday night and when I woke up on Thursday we had 500 members.”

“By the time Saturday the paper must have gotten wind of it and by Sunday morning nearly 1800 members had joined the group.”

Though some may opine that a solution to homelessness is as simple as just ‘getting a job’, the couple dismissed the notion as reductive.

Today, the group has over 8,500 members and the numbers are still growing. Though abundant in people-power, PHSG is run by volunteers so there are no coffers to raid for supplies or to fund programs.

“If you’ve got mental illness, if you’ve got an addiction, if you’ve just lost everything… to go out there and look for a job is not on your agenda of important things,” Reid says.

“We didn’t really want to ask any bodies for money,” Michaels said. “We’d much prefer the community responding to it. We look at homelessness as a community problem. The government’s side of it is just to build more affordable housing. They can’t be out there looking after people who are falling through the cracks, that’s up to the community and the local levels of government.” The pair recognise the limitations of local government and the minefield that politics can be.

“Homelessness doesn’t come with a face or a particular gender or a nationality. You can be one pay cheque away from being homeless.” The couple often direct those in need, or those looking to help to other organisations such as Ruah, Passages and the Freedom Centre. “There’s lots of organisations there, I just think people need to be made aware of them. Of course, if you want to help you can go on the street and speak to homeless people themselves,” they tell me. “We recommend people don’t give money. Buy a sandwich and a drink and just hand it to someone in need. Money is usually to do with cigarettes or addiction… not that we blame them of course.”

After that outpouring of local support, Reid and Michaels had to make a clearer plan of how they wanted to move forward and mobilise this newly founded cohort.

For those who want to get involved with PHSG specifically, they invite you to connect through the Facebook page and their website.

“The first thing to determine was what the homeless actually needed. Most asked for change, but you also had boys complaining that they were thirsty in the January heat. We had noticed that at the same time ProAcqua had started putting their machines around the city.”

“The page on Facebook is an open forum for people to ask questions. It’s not a forum for dictating religious or political views, it’s about offering assistance and letting people know where they can be assisted.”

The couple wrote to the aquaculture company and asked if there was a way this service could be offered to those who needed it. They quickly replied offering the PHSG 300 bottles to distribute along with some re-usable charge cards.

“I don’t know anything political other than when we go out there and hand someone some food – the smile on their face and their gratitude means a hell of a lot more than competition between local councils.”

The extravagant finale of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Season 8 may have just aired, wrapping up one of the most interesting and diverse seasons of the series – but there’s no rest for the wicked talent of RuPaul’s best squirrel friend Michelle Visage. Calling me during a brief repose in Philadelphia from the US leg of the RuPaul’s Drag Race Battle of the Seasons Tour, Visage reminds me that she came to work. “It’s a grind, honey. There’s no time for surprises because it’s day in and day out. Get to a new city, maybe an hour or two to go to your room, check in, shower, maybe get a work-out in, meet in the lobby, go to the venue, spend two hours sound checking then two to three hours getting ready, do a show, come back to the hotel, take it all off, shower, get up, meet in the lobby at 5:30am. That’s our schedule.”

NOT RELYING ON THAT BODY

Despite her intense itinerary, Visage is energetic. She tells me she is excited that drag fans are being treated to a double dose of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ this year, with ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 2’ right around the corner. Fan favourites Alaska, Alyssa Edwards and Katya have all been rumoured to be returning for a second round, but Visage was tightlipped about the specifics. “It is cutthroat! We’re talking about bitches who came to play. Just wait. This season is A-MA-ZING. I cannot wait. All I’m gonna say is… I’m quite tough. I’m. Quite. Tough. This is the second All Stars so they need to be ready.” Arguably best known for her seven seasons judging on the drag reality phenomenon, it is easy to see why Visage is the longest lasting fixture of the panel aside from the program’s titular character. Often playing up the ‘bad cop’ archetype as a reality judge, it is no secret that Visage is a warm-hearted person as well as a stern mentor, incredible vocalist, author and a staunch advocate for the LGBTIQ+ community. “It’s 2016. I don’t understand what the rest of the world is waiting for. It’s not about gay rights, it’s about human rights. When you take away and you strip people of the very rights of who they can marry and who they love, then it puts yourself in a god-like position and I think they get off on the power.” Visage says people who get off of this sort of power play concerns her, wondering how people in their position would respond if it were their child.

“Whatever the situation is, they never put themselves in their position and god forbid it happens to them. It’s the same thing with trans people. God forbid any of these people that are fighting trans rights… [or] struggles with gender identity and knows what it’s like to walk one day in the wrong skin. Nobody has any idea. They’re just seeing it as a sexual perversion instead of understanding how important it is.

news “In this day and age for your Prime Minister to not be allowing marriage equality is so shallow and narrow-minded and primitive and it’s time to push Australia into the next decade. It is what it is, the world’s going to evolve with or without you, kiddo.” Soon to return for Australia’s Battle of the Seasons, Visage was recently in Perth for the Clash of the Queens tour which saw some of our favourite local talent battle it out in for the title. The west coast was in for a special treat this tour, when RuPaul showed up at The Court out of drag to watch the show. “It was unbelievable. He texted me and said ‘where are you gonna be tonight?’ and I told him and he said ‘I’m staying right by there, I’m going to come!’ and I was like ‘What? You want to come to a CLUB?’ So he came with his boyfriend and his boyfriend’s family because they’re from Perth and we all went hung out. I know your girls were having a freak out! The only bad thing was that every city after would ask me if Ru was coming… but he was in Perth on vacation.” Our queens were unshaken by RuPaul’s watchful eye and Visage lauded the uniqueness and creativity of Perth’s drag scene. “All the weird drag queens were in Perth, I loved that. They were like the East Village in New York City, you know? All the rebels and the ones who don’t play by the rules were in Perth and that made me super happy. It was a small group of people competing compared to the other cities but they were so passionate and amazing and I will always remember Perth for that.” When asked what Perth should expect from Battle of the Seasons, Visage’s answer was simple: “The best damn drag show they’ve ever seen.” “It’s not what you’d go see at a bar, it’s really not. It’s a night out at the theatre. It’s a two-hour fully choreographed production from beginning to end. There’s group numbers, there’s duets, there’s video elements, there’s audience interaction, we do The Snatch Game live! You will not be disappointed.” RuPaul’s Drag Race Battle of the Seasons Tour hits Perth’s Astor Theatre on Wednesday 6th July. Tickets available from astortheatreperth.com. Leigh Hill

Getting Fresh with Jordan Bruno Over the last few months Jordan has been behind some mouth-watering dishes on the TV show ‘My Kitchen Rules’ that left audiences salivating at their screens. Appearing on the hit TV show was a huge life changing journey for Jordan. Appearing alongside his Mum Anna, the Wanneroo local was a hits with the show’s fans. While the pair didn’t win the competition, they were knocked out in the semi-finals, Jordan hopes his new public profile will give him an opportunity to campaign for the social equality issues he’s passionate about. “If I have some social influence and can make more of a stance for marriage equality and things like that, and be heard, that’s good.” Jordan said. “My Mum wants to attend my wedding as much as I want to have one.” Jordan said. “It’s not something that is just about individuals this affects whole families. If everyone could get married, that says we’re all on a level playing field. It’s a bit of a joke that it hasn’t happened yet.” The charming reality TV star said he had a lot of fun on some recent photo shoots and thinks that promoting good body images is important. ‘I know I don’t have the best body in the world, but I love the idea of making food sexier. Long may we remember them

Franz Pribel

Jackie ‘Jax’ Hibbert

Velma

Respected community member Franz Pribel passed away last month after a long illness. Franz was a long standing volunteer at Gay and Lesbian Community Services – now Living Proud, and the WA AIDS Council’s Mensline.

Dykes on Bikes organizer Jackie ‘Jax’ Hibbert passed away peacefully in early May, only 18 months after she was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease. Her partner Sue and family with her.

Velma featured in OUTinPerth in 2016 celebrating her 90th birthday. Sadly she passed away at the end of April.

Franz has been remembered by his many friends and colleagues for his great friendships, his generosity and understanding and his great wit and dry sense of humour.

Sue has asked that anyone who wishes to pay their respects to Jax, do so by making a donation to The Motor Neuron Disease Association of WA.

Franz was a medical practitioner and prominent member of the LGBTIQ community at the height of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and early 1990s, long before effective medications were available. Franz lost many friends and a partner to HIV.

Jax was the leader of the Dykes on Bikes group for over 10 years and would rev up the crowd at the start of the Pride Parade each year.

Franz is survived by his partner Gary, who we send our sincere condolences to.

Jax’s friends said she’ll be remembered for her fun loving attitude, cheeky sense of humour, and as someone who was a great friend to many people. She will be missed greatly.

June Low, from GRAI: Gay and Lesbian Rights in Ageing, shared with us that Velma’s life included a successful nursing career which took her to Melbourne, South Australia and back to WA. In the 1950’s Velma house in Floreat was a popular venue for parties with its historic curved bar that people were known to dance upon. It was a time long before the emerged of LGBTIQ venues. Like other women of her age, Velma’s social life was carefully compartmentalised: family and non-gay friends either never knew, or never talked about her lesbian identity. ‘Lesbian’ simply wasn’t a word that was used - and was only embraced by Velma in the last year of her life after being befriended by some ‘younger’ lesbians in their 60s.

Labor pledge to appoint LGBT discrimination commissioner

Catherine McGregor speaks out against Safe Schools

A Shorten Labor Government would appoint a full-time LGBTI Discrimination Commissioner to the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Catherine McGregor has spoken out about her strong opposition to the Safe Schools Coalition in a deeply personal attack on one of the program’s staff members.

The announcement was made this morning by Senator Penny Wong at a Rainbow Labor campaign launch in Melbourne. “The commissioner will ensure lesbians, gays, transgender and intersex Australians live in a safer, more secure and more inclusive society.” Senator Wong said. “The commissioner will address structural discrimination, work towards ensuring our schools, workplaces and communities are free from discrimination, continuing Labor’s tradition of removing discrimination and creating a more fair, more equal Australia.” Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus said Labor would provide $1.4 million to fund the creation of a discrimination commissioner to champion the rights of LGBTI Australians.

“We know from experience that having a full-time commissioner working on particular issues does assist in drawing attention to particular forms of discrimination experienced by LGBTI Australians,” Dreyfus said. The move is similar to steps the Andrews Labor Government in Victoria has taken where a Minister for Equality was included in the ministerial positions and a specific commissioner for Gender and Sexuality was appointed. Labor announced their proposal saying a LGBTI Discrimination Commissioner would be a new champion for the rights of LGBTI Australians, and help build a more inclusive Australia. The party advocates for the new position arguing that LGBTI Australians continue to face discrimination in many areas of life and many feel they need to hide their sexuality for fear of violence and discrimination.

USA

Target USA stand against anti-trans bathroom bills Department store giant Target have released a statement in the USA confirming their position on bathroom policy amidst a heated national debate. Target have made it known that transgender staff and shoppers are welcome to use the restroom or fitting room that fits their own gender identity. Some US States, namely Mississippi, Tennessee and North Carolina, have recently introduced laws that restrict bathroom use for those of diverse gender identities, with some states even requiring ID to use the restroom. “Recent debate around proposed laws in several states has reignited a national conversation about inclusivity,” the statement from Target reads. “Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.” The statement also outlines the retail giant’s support for the federal Equality Act, which would amend the USA’s Civil Rights Act to include protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, and ban discrimination in education, accommodation, employment and housing. “Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.” Since announcing the policy in April, Target CEO Brian Cornell says the department store giant has seen no impact on sales. “To date we have not seen a material or measurable impact on our business,” Cornell told Fortune. “Just a handful of stores across the country have seen some activity and have been impacted.” A number of celebrities have also taken a stand against these discriminatory laws, choosing to boycott performing in the state or donate profits to local LGBTIQ support groups. Among these performers are singers Nick Jonas and Demi Lovato, musician Laura Jane Grace and comedian Joel McHale.

Writing in the Herald Sun’s Rendezvous site, McGregor labels Ros Ward from the Safe Schools Coalition a “committed Trotskyite, who believes in the overthrow of the capitalist system” and argues that the Safe Schools Coalition is not the most effective way to assist transgender youth. McGregor said the programs approach that suggests people could consider themselves to be genderless was not the most effective approach.

news

The retired defense force staffer also notes she is offended by Ward’s lack of support for the military. McGregor said she had found Ward to have “contempt” for the armed forces – in which McGregor had served in for almost four decades. Catherine McGregor was ‘Queenslander of the Year’ in 2015 and a nominee for ‘Australian of the Year’ in 2016. When the award was given to her former commanding officer David Morrison, she described him a “weak, conventional choice”. McGregor subsequently apologised for the comment. Safe Schools Coalition and Ros Ward were contacted for comment.

In her article McGregor writes about how the political party the Socialist Alternative “sickens” her when she reads about what they stand for.

BANGLADESH

Bangladeshi police arrest man over killing of LGBT magazine editor Bangladeshi police have announced that they have arrested a man in connection to the violent killing of LGBTIQ magazine editor Xulhaz Mannan and activist Mahbub Tonoy. Thirty give year old, Mannan (pictured) was killed by machete wielding attackers in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, late last month. He was the editor of the country’s first LGBT magazine ‘Roopbaan’. Mannan was killed alongside LGBTI activist Mahbub Tonoy, 25, who had organised a ‘rainbow rally’, held due Bengali New Year on April 14th. There murders were part of a series of attacks in recent weeks against intellectuals in the country. Both Mannan and Tonoy worked for aid organisation USAID. US ambassador Marcia Bernicat said she is devastated by the brutal murder of these two men. “We abhor this senseless act of violence and urge the government of Bangladesh in the strongest terms to apprehend the criminals behind these murders.”

DENMARK

Denmark will no longer class being transgender as a mental illness Denmark has announced that it will no longer consider being transgender a mental illness as of January 2017. The progressive nation announced its reclassification, citing frustration with the slow progress at the World Health Organisation. Denmark will be the first country to remove the condition from its list of recognised mental illnesses. “At the moment, transgender is listed as a mental illness or behavioural problem,” said health spokesman Flemming Moller Mortensen. “That is incredibly stigmatising and in no way reflects how we see transgender people In Denmark. It should be a neutral diagnosis.” The proposal to declassify sexual orientation in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems was first put forward in 2014, but a decision is not expected until sometime next year.

“Do me a favour: next time you’re on a tram with your partner, hold their hand. Do it with pride and defiance. Because you have that freedom. And I can think of nothing more Victorian than that.”

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews delivering an apology for past LGBT convictions in Victoria.

“We see you; we stand with you; and we will do everything we can to protect you going forward. Please know that history is on your side. This country was founded on a promise of equal rights for all, and we have always managed to move closer to that promise, little by little, one day at a time. It may not be easy – but we’ll get there together.” US Attorney General Loretta Lynch speaks to the trans community while announcing complaint against North Carolina’s discriminatory laws.

Olympia Talks

“It’s kind of surreal,” Australian artist Olympia said in the days leading up to the release of her debut album ‘Self Talk’

“But I did want to disrupt how people will take it on, it’s a bold name, I don’t know if I’ve lived up to it yet, but I need that as an artist, I need to push myself hard.”

“It’s a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, equal measures of fear worrying that some won’t like it, and lots of excitement and pride.

The video for her single ‘Smoke Signals’ looks as if it’s pulled from the ‘Countdown’ archive, it’s a lovely nod to the visual style of the late ‘70s when images were echoed to infinity with what was considered ground breaking technology in its time.

“You work on an album for so long, and then it becomes this object, and then it’s out there in the world and people are reacting to it.” Olympia is the performance moniker for Olivia Bartley who has released a series of singles and EPs in the lead up to tackling a full album. Her songs are a curious mix of electronica, torch songs and country twinges. Bartley said she chose her performance name to give a little bit of distance between herself and her artistic output.

“We shot it on cameras from 1982,” Olympia said, ‘It’s retro by design.” Olympia will be playing Amplifier on June 24th and The Odd Fellow in Fremantle on June 25th. ‘Self Talk’ is available now. Head to the giveaways page at www.outinperth.com for your chance to win one of five copies we’ve got on offer.

“I didn’t want people to be going ‘let’s go hear what Olivia is thinking today. I feel like the album is like a book of short stories.” Olympia said before bursting into laughter. “Now that I say that out loud it sounds incredibly pretentious!”

The Brisbane I am not usually a fan of big pubs, I like my bars small and intimate. Every now and again, though, a pub reigns supreme. This pub is the Brisbane Hotel.

which is a great way for them to showcase what’s on offer but also gives customers a chance to meet people and learn about what their drinking.

Although it’s been around forever, The Brisbane has had more than one face. It used to be a tradie pub. Some years ago it got a facelift and became one of the places that I call home.

4. The team. Some of the staff have been working there longer than I’ve been drinking there. There just shows how great of a venue it is. Staff that stick around that long really know their stuff, about the industry and the products being sold. That means you get great service from knowledgeable staff. What more could you want?

Over the past eight years, it has been a place where I have celebrated and commiserated, fallen in love, laughed for hours, people watched, shared food and drank some wonderful booze. The Brisbane, is 100% well rounded and here are the reasons why you should put it on your list of watering holes. 1. It’s is incredibly diverse. There’s a restaurant, a bar, a lounge, a deck and a big garden area. 2. The food. Pizza? Check. Bar snacks? Check. Full menu? Check. Sharing foods? Check. There’s literally something for everyone on the food front and everything I’ve ever ordered had been fresh and light. I love spending long lunches in the sunshine with a group and tucking in to everything they have to offer.

FREE ON-ROADS AT THE MINI GARAGE SALE. *

3. Their booze. From cocktails to wines, spirits and beers, their range covers accessible and fancy. They’ve started doing free beer tastings on a Sunday

5. The garden. I love the outdoor area. You can catch some rays, enjoy a drink, listen to the tunes and easily lose a day. Tables can be booked, but it’s rare for them all be filled. I have spent hours sitting in the corner people watching and exploring their menu. 6. Pool table. Yes, there is a good pub in Perth with a pool table. Rejoice! I love that you can kick back and shoot some pool. 7. Sunday sessions. This is the reason I fell in love with the Bris. Busy summer Sunday’s spent sharing bottles of bubbles and eating pizza. Perfect. The Brisbane is on the corner of Brisbane St and Beaufort St in Highgate. Alice Mod

There’s nothing fruitier than Chapel’s Fruit Teas.

Famous Lines ‘Ghost’ is one of those stories that has a classic line, like Hamlet’s “To be, or not to be”, Dirty Dancing’s “I carried a watermelon” or Mother Superior’s carefully phrased “Maria? What is it you can’t face?” in The Sound of Music. ‘Ghost – the Musical’ has a highly anticipated line that audiences wait for. “Molly, you’re in danger girl’, actress Wendy Mae Brown declares over the phone in-between performances of the hit show. “You can literally feel the audience holding the breath when the line approaches” the actress said. “You can’t change it too much, but you’ve always got to pause before it. It’s got to have some cheekiness and some sass in it.” The actress laughed and said that she had learned to be careful to pause for too long or the audience would get in and say the line before her. Having played the part of Oda Mae Brown in the West End, in a regional tour of the UK and across China, the similarly named actress was excited to continue play the role in the Australian production. Wendy told OUTinPerth that she remembers that she first saw the film ‘Ghost’ in the cinema back when it first came out she thought it would make a great musical. “I’d just done a really bad audition for Sir Trevor Nunn, it was a really sunny day and I just didn’t want to go home. I’d had a terrible audition, I think I’d fallen over, and I’d forgotten the words to a song. I walked past ‘the pictures’ and thought Okay, let’s give this a go mainly because Whoopi Goldberg was in it.” Wendy recounted.

“I was entranced, and no word of a lie, I thought this would make a great musical!” In 2011 the film was re-worked into a musical format featuring songs written by Eurythmic Dave Stewart and experienced pop producer Glenn Ballard and it’s been a success around the globe. The show cleverly using elaborate lighting and impressive staging tricks to allow the lead character Sam Wheat, who has recently been killed, to leave his mortal body, walk through walls and manipulate objects. Rob Mills, takes on the leading role of Sam, while Jemma Rix who wowed audiences as Elphaba in ‘Wicked’, plays his devastated girlfriend Molly. Rounding out the cast is David Roberts who plays the couple’s best friend Carl, the actor nails the complex character who is not all that he seems. ‘Ghost – The Musical’ is playing at the Crown Theatre until June 12th Graeme Watson

20 Things you may not know about Culture Club In the early ‘80s Boy George worked as the ‘coat check’ girl at the famous Blitz club in London.

Culture Club backing singer Helen Terry brought out a solo tune in 1984, her top 40 hit ‘Love Lies Lost’ was written by Boy George and Roy Hay.

Before settling on the name Culture Club the band considering calling themselves Sex Gang Children.

In 1999 Culture Club re-recorded their single ‘Your Kisses Are Charity’ teaming up with country music star Dolly Parton.

When the band came to record their video for the classic song ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?’ bass player Mikey Craig wasn’t able to make the shoot, so his brother Greg stood in for him.

Culture Club bassist Mikey Craig has also played in a Culture Club tribute band, their called Culture Dub.

The band got a big break when they got the chance to appear on the British TV show ‘Top of the Pops’, they got invited on at the last moment when Shakin’ Stevens pulled out. Early in their career Culture Club got a bad review in the pop-bible ‘Smash Hits’, the writer was Neil Tennant. There was some bad blood for a little while. Tennant went on to form his own successful band. Years later Boy George scored a big hit when Pet Shop Boys produced his solo hit ‘The Crying Game’. A fourteen year old Naomi Campbell appears in the video for the Culture Club hit ‘I’ll Tumble 4 Ya’. The band’s sophomore album ‘Colour by Numbers’ is listed in the book ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’. RnB singer Jermaine Stewart sings backing vocals on Culture Club’s ‘Kiss Me Blind’. He went on to have his own big hit with the abstinence anthem ‘We don’t have to take our clothes off’. Sadly Stewart died of an AIDS related illness in 1997. The bands giant hit ‘Karma Chameleon’ has sold over 5 million copies around the globe, making it one of the biggest selling singles of all time. Boy George performs backing vocals on Feargal Sharkey’s 1985 hit ‘A Good Heart’. The band appears in the fourth season of the TV show ‘The A-Team’, the episode’s called ‘Cowboy George’. In his first autobiography Boy George said he was stoned for most of the filming.

Boy George wrote a successful musical about London’s club life called ‘Taboo’. In the musical Boy George played performance artist Leigh Bowery. Actor Euan Morton played George in the show. In 1995 Boy George published his first autobiography ‘Take It Like a Man’, a second memoir ‘Straight’ came out in 2005. Boy George has had a successful solo career both, as a musical artist and DJ, but he’s also put out records under pseudonyms including Angela Dust and The Twin. Boy George has a great podcast featuring the latest dance music, it’s called ‘Club Culture’. This year Boy George replaced Tom Jones on ‘The Voice UK’ and he’s just filmed a series of ‘The Celebrity Apprentice’ in Los Angeles. In this new series Donald Trump is replaced with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The band’s most recent single is ‘More Than Silence’, a new album ‘Tribes’ is expected to be released soon. Culture Club are playing HBF stadium on June 8th tickets are available from ticketmaster.com.au Aussie band Kids in the Kitchen will be supporting. Ladyhawke Gets Wild New Zealand’s Ladyhawke is ready to share her third album ‘Wild Things’. Fans have gotten a taste of the new record via the single ‘Love Song’ and Ladyhawke can’t wait for the new collection of songs.

I think it’s shit for the gay community, it’s frustrating. We’ve had it in New Zealand for a while now, but even that took too long. I keep thinking, “it’s 2016, why is this still a thing?”

OUTinPerth spoke to Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke, about her new music, marriage equality and singing in French.

It’s a really hard thing to talk about, there are people who put religion into everything including politics and they just need to separate the two. If two people love one and another other, don’t deny them the right to be married. Its just not fair.

Who did you make this new record with? I worked with a producer from Chicago, Tommy English. He moved here to L.A. around the same time as me, and we made this record at his house. We started in March 2014 and finished around March 2015. It was a good process and a lot of fun. Tommy is a fun guy to work with and he’s such a talented and accomplished musician. Do you like to take your time when making music? I don’t like rushing. When I started working on ‘Wild Things’ it went quite quickly, but I had this whole other record that I worked on before that which I thought was going to be the third record, but I ended up not using any of it. It was way too dark, it ended up being something I toiled on, I had a whole record full of music but ultimately I just had to walk away from it. As a New Zealander you’ve been able to marry your same sex partner, while here in Australia we’re still debating the issue during our federal election. Coming from a country with marriage equality, how do you look at nations like Australia which don’t recognise your union?

We have normal relationships, we do normal things, we are not freakish. Marriage is not a weird thing. I just don’t get it. I hate that it’s still a debate, and something that the Australian LGBTI community are going through… the thought that it might not happen in Australia just makes me feel terrible. You recorded a French version of your hit song ‘Paris is Burning’, can you speak French? No, the producer of my second album (Pascal Gabriel) is French. I didn’t write the song with him, but I got him to translate all the lyrics for me and then I learned how to sing it phonetically. I really wanted to have a full version in French, I thought it would be cool. I’d love being in Paris and French people had been so supportive of my music. French people tell me I sound ‘cute’ singing it, and they also tell me I sound Spanish. I think they appreciated me making the effort though. Ladyhawke’s new album ‘Wild Things’ is out June 3rd. Day of the Dead - Various Artists In fact, over the last 25 years over 500 musical artists, producers and video makers have contributed to over 20 compilations. Now the latest offering is here. A collection of tunes originally recorded by the legendary Californian band The Grateful Dead. It’s a fitting tribute to the prolific band who released more than 140 albums during their career. this compilation honours them with a 59 track, 5 disc long collection that takes almost six hours to play in full.

Over the years the Red Hot organization has released a stack of albums to raise awareness about HIV and donate funds to worthy organisations. The journey began in 1990 with the “Red, Hot and Blue’ collection which saw a range of artists deliver modern takes on Cole Porter classics. Neneh Cherry reworked ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ into a HIV educational experience, while committed HIV advocate Annie Lennox poignantly performed ‘Every Time We Say Goodbye’ – at a time when the gay community was wishing farewell to friends and lovers with devastating frequency. Over the years there’s been dance compilations, country compilations, and even quite a good Latin American collection.

The War on Drugs kick things off with the upbeat and slick sounding ‘Touch of Grey’, Rilo Kiley singer Jenny Lewis and Phosphorescence team up for a bluesy rock tune ‘Sugaree’, My Morning Jacket’s Jim Jasmes croons ‘Candyman’, and Australia’s own Courtney Barnett takes on ‘New Speedway Boogie’ with her own distinctive laid back drawl. ‘Mumford and Sons deliver a folky and mesmerizing ‘Friend of the Devil’. In one of the album’s most beautiful moments Anohmi joins forces with ymusic for ‘Black Peter’ – the artist formerly known as Anthony Hegarty just has a stunning voice. Equally captivating is Bill Callahan who sings ‘Easy Wind’. Ed Droste from Grizzly Bear and Binki Shapiro drop a psychedelic cut ‘Loser’ that’s filled with the sound of ‘60s garage rock. Perfume Genius and Sharon Van Etten have recorded a tender version of ‘Lay Me Down’. It’s amazing how much Perfume Genius sounds like Art Garfunkel – when he visited Perth in 2015 he delivered a rendition of Garfunkel’s most famous solo tune ‘Bright Eyes’ during his PIAF show.

Ambient artist Tim Hecker provides his version of ‘Transitive Refraction Axis for John Oswald’ an odd collection of what sounds like clanging crystals, synthesizers and a muted cocktail party – because that kind of strangeness is what Hecker’s all about. Longtime deadheads Alan and Bryce Dessner from US indie band The National have put this collection together. It’s their second collection for the Red Hot organization following from 2009’s ‘Dark Was The Night’. The National’s band members act as the backing band on many of the tracks on the album, and they step up to the foreground for ‘Morning Dew’ – a tune filled with guitars and ominous vocals. It’s one of several tracks they take the lead on across the five discs. Bryce Dessner has a beautiful solo track on the record ‘Garcia Counterpoint’, a sprawling 7 minute long instrumental with layered guitars and warm organs. Given that the Grateful Dead were known for their love of long songs, it’s surprising that only three of the 59 tunes offered here extend over the ten minute mark. The longest - over 16 minutes for ‘Terrapin Suite’ which sees Grizzly Bear’s Daniel Rossen and Christopher Bear traversing an number of musical styles. It doesn’t matter if you love, despise or no nothing of The Grateful Dead, this excellent compilation has so much variety on it, there really is something for everybody. A quality offering. It’s the Rainbow Police!

Back in April the meme loving Marriage Alliance, the lobby group who oppose marriage equality, introduced us to the Rainbow Police.

The clone duo - who look like they’re missing the leather daddy, Native American, construction worker and cowboy – appeared as part of the Marriage Alliance’s reaction to Telstra reaffirming their support for marriage equality. We asked on our social media what they Rainbow Police’s names should be. There were lots of suggestions, but we loved William Flechas’ suggestion that their names should be Raine and Beau. The duo are now set to appear in a series of children’s books designed to teach youngsters how to style a wig and make their own felt.
