Political art is the focus of a new exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
The West Australian Ballet are staging two divergent explorations of Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy ‘Romeo & Juliet’ this September.
‘Dissenting Voices’ is an exhibition concerned with how artists respond to social issues, cultural concerns and political events.
Youri Vamos’ acclaimed international production of ‘Romeo & Juliet’ takes the Montagues and Capulets to the 1930’s, transporting audiences with period costumes and a provocative set to complement the incredible dancers. ‘Radio & Juliet’ asks the question, “What if Juliet chose to live?”, reimagining the tale to the inimitable music of Radiohead.
Curated by Jenepher Duncan, the free exhibition also includes a number of works with a queer perspective. On Until January 31 2017.

Are beats bad? Earlier this month Perth mother Rebecca Britten published a Facebook post sharing her alarm when she stumbled over a web forum that had posts from people looking to meet other people for sex in public toilets, including her local shopping centre. Britten also noted that some of the people posting on the forum were describing themselves as being only fifteen years old. She wrote about her concern about children being exposed inadvertently to sexual activity. Her worries are valid. Her concerns were soon shared across many local media outlets, which highlighted that gay sexual activity was happening in public toilets. The shopping centre promised to beef up security and the WA Police said they were looking into the matter. While the newspaper articles focused on the homosexual nature of the posts, Britten noted on her own social media that the online forum she came across also has posts from heterosexual people looking to have hook-ups in public spaces too. It’s not only same sex attracted people who have sex in spaces outside of their bedrooms. Three years ago Warren Bachelor was beaten to death in a public toilet in Middle Swan after two men confronted him when he was engaging in a sexual act inside a locked cubicle. At the time OUTinPerth published some information on safety at beats. The information was taken from a resource at the WA AIDS Council. The feedback from you, our readership was mixed. Some people felt that by publishing the information we were endorsing the behaviour. Other’s wrote to us describing how public hook-ups were in their opinion ‘just part of the queer scene’, some readers questioned why anyone would want to have sex anywhere but a luscious bedroom? As the topic is back in the zeitgeist we asked; How should we has a community be responding to sex in beats, bathrooms and beaches? Guy We always strive for acceptance & positive societal attitudes. This doesn’t make the LGBTIQ community look good Michael There are websites, apps & nightclubs. Is there really any need for beats anymore? I think people should clean up their act. It’s not like toilets are a nice place for sex anyway. Aram I’m a bit uncomfortable with (what feels like the conflation) of gay bashing at beats. The response to that is not ‘don’t use beats’, it’s ‘don’t bash people. That observation aside.. meh. I think some discretion is advised (don’t be having sex where members of the public, especially kids, are likely to see it).. but if anonymous/semi-public sex is what does it for you, or if a beat is your only way of accessing sex (as it is for many beat users) then whatever. Sara No, get a room! There is no need for beats anymore. I agree the message of don’t bash people Aram, but I also don’t think public toilets are the place to have sex. Joy No guys do it in private

THE DEEPER DEBATE.
When we listen to politicians and lobbyists who argue against marriage equality and transgender rights it can be infuriating. I often find myself shouting at my television when religious groups and conservative voices rally to argue against a successful education program that stops teenagers from being bullied about their gender identity or sexuality One of the most outspoken conservative voice in Western Australia is Southern River MLA the Reverend Peter Abetz. Abetz was a pastor in for 25 years before shifting in politics in 2008. His younger brother Eric is a federal senator representing Tasmania. At the next state election Peter Abetz, due to boundary changes, will also become my local member of parliament. Campaigning has already begun, when I leave my house each day I pass through a gauntlet of rubbish bins featuring advertising from Abetz, his tag line is that he ‘puts people first’. Earlier this month many of the advertisements were ‘adjusted’. A sticker appeared on then labeling the local MP a “medieval man”. Some constituents might have felt they were being put second. As a gay person I shared that frustration. opinion

We wanted to speak to Peter Abetz because we think he should argue his case to the people whose lives his views have a direct affect upon. We wanted to ask some direct questions. There is still a chance that we might be heading towards a plebiscite, a long and protected discussion about our rights, relationships and families. The philosopher Sun Tzu said “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.”

Here in Australia, political forces are conniving to derail or delay marriage equality despite the fact at least 70% of voters are in favour of changing the Marriage Act to include us. We know who our opponents are but we don’t always know who our allies are. OUTinPerth has decided to seek out and interview those people who by their words and actions show they are straight allies. If you know someone you believe we should meet who is a straight ally, feel free to contact us and nominate. Neil Hart is a new friend I met at the beginning of the year. He is an ex-Lutheran missionary who is a vocal ally for the LGBTI community. We caught up in Kings Park over a glass of wine and mandarins to chat. Were you always an ally of the LGBTI community? I was a Minister of a protestant church (Lutheran) and I wouldn’t have given two thoughts about LGBTI people or justice or discrimination. Most of my life I would have had fears that someone might turn my kids gay. But that changed for me when I established a school and met a real gay person. I became the chaplain and I began to come across gay kids and gender questioning kids and I realized that the
church’s statements about this were not just unhelpful but downright harmful. How long did it take you to get to the point where you were able to speak out in support of LGBTI people? It took me a couple of years. I did a lot of listening before I was ready to speak out and give positive affirmation; to say, the Church is wrong and what they say is harmful and these kids need to be told they are all right. They’re great and they deserve to look forward to a life of love just like everybody else and that is all right with God. When did you come out of the closet as an LGBTI ally? I took a break from pastoring a Church and I started a blog. When I said in my blog; how dare we treat LGBTI people this way, I received a very antagonistic response. A lot of Pastors responding said I was a voice of Satan. They denounced me, claiming I was leading people to hell. I lost friendships and my Pastors credentials. It was a pretty tough time. Did you ever think you might go back in the closet and stop talking about LGBTI rights? I never thought that. I regret that I was so acid tongued. I could have been gentler. It was hard. Coming out as an ally had a cost. It wasn’t possible for me to stay worshipping at the church that I helped establish and build. People in the church were so opposed to what I was saying. They were writing to leadership but wouldn’t speak to me directly. I had to leave. Of course I had to realize that the rejection that I was experiencing was just a slight taste of what Christian gay people had experienced for generations. LGBTI people have been persecuted, not for anything they have done, but just because of who they are. How did you become involved with The Reformation Project? When I was studying what the bible says, if anything, about homosexuality I came across a YouTube video by Matthew Vines, a young bloke who gave a talk at a Baptist church about the texts that supposedly refer to LGBTI people.
We’ve moved! Playgroups with Pride WA have had the privilege of moving into a brand new purpose built facility in Morley, just around the corner from our old location. For the past year and a half we’ve have been using the facilities at the Derrick Ernst Neighbourhood Centre, which was directly opposite Morley Galleria, but their lease expired and we needed to move. Fortunately for us the association that runs the neighbourhood centre, and the City of Bayswater decided that the best plan of action was to build a brand new centre and we even got to choose the community room’s colour! The centre is an occasional day care centre, offering childcare anywhere from 15 minutes to all day, and we run out of the community room on a Monday morning from 9:30-11:30, with generic playgroups running on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. They also host migrant English courses, adult
Matthew is gay himself and what he was saying really touched me. He said. ‘Just imagine, every time I met a guy and we got to know each other…that maybe I could grow to love, you would ask me to run away from that person every single time for the rest of my life.’ And I thought. Yes. That is what the church is asking people to do. That is just disgraceful. I ran study groups until I found that Matthew Vines had started The Reformation Project, a group formed to equip Christians to go back into their churches to be agents of change. Now I am part of a national group of people who are working to help churches change and become affirming and welcoming of LGBTI people. How do you feel about Australian Christian Lobby’s voice around the issue of marriage equality and the proposed plebiscite? I would say to the Australian Christian Lobby; how dare you call yourselves that. You aren’t the voice of Christians in Australia. You are a political lobbying group. What church do you speak for? I think that what they have to say in the lead up to the plebiscite is just going to be a hurtful, and harmful thing for the LGBTI community in Australia. I will be looking to work with LGBTI groups in opposing ACL and the Plebiscite. Christian leaders may lose their job if they speak out in favour of marriage equality. Fortunately I don’t have that to lose any more. I am convinced that the message of Jesus compels me to speak for LGBTI people. Jesus did things to show that the need of the person was more important than the law. What is the need of this gay person? They need to be loved and accepted and have the same opportunity for love and marriage and family as everybody else the way God made them. So that is what I will do wherever I have an opportunity. Would you march in the Pride parade? Absolutely. Where do I sign up? Charlie Perth

HIV prevention drug will not be added to Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme Truvada, the drug that makes a huge difference in preventing the spread of HIV, will not be added to Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). The game changing medication failed to gain a recommendation that it should be added the tax payer funded scheme. HIV advocacy groups have described the decision as extremely disappointing. Commonly known as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) treatment, the once a day pill has been proven to be highly successful in stopping the transmission of HIV. The medication is taken by people who do not have the virus. The Department of Health has said that the price requested by manufacturer Gilead Sciences was too high for it to be considered for the scheme. In turning down the submission the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) also noted that people at high risk of contracting HIV who may not follow safe sex recommendations, might also struggle to remember to take a pill each day. “The PBAC noted that the efficacy of Truvada was highly dependent on adherence, and that it is not clear if subjects at high risk of contracting HIV due to self-reported low adherence to safer sex practices would also have lower adherence to medication.” the advisory group said in the published notes of its recent meeting.
In Western Australia no such program exists, the WA AIDS Council said hopes were resting on a positive decision from the scheme’s advisory committee to at least partially address the disadvantage that Western Australians vulnerable to HIV are experiencing relative to their east coast peers.
“The Australian Government has made a world-leading commitment to virtually end HIV transmission in Australia by 2020. We can do this together if we have access to the best prevention tools of which PrEP is pivotal. We won’t reach the Australian Government’s goal without PrEP being subsidised through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.”
WA AIDS Council Chairperson Sam Hastings said today that this decision was a significant setback in achieving the virtual elimination of HIV by 2020.
Advocates urge parties to continue working towards a solution
“Both our State and Federal Governments are committed to this goal, and PrEP is the most effective development in prevention we’ve seen in many years. That’s why other state governments are investing so heavily in making sure that as many people who both need and want PrEP can get it – our Government must consider doing the same.” Hastings said. The head of the WA AIDS Council noted that new diagnoses of HIV remain stubbornly high in Western Australia at more than 100 per year, and gay and bisexual men account for over two thirds of this total. Hastings said that PrEP is considered vital for Australians at very high risk of HIV infection.
A government spokesperson has said that the PBS would welcome another submission for the medication to be listed on the scheme if the manufacturer could reconsider the price and make it available to a smaller high risk subset of people rather than all people at risk of contracting HIV AIDS organisations label the decision disappointing The WA AIDS Council has said it’s disappointed in the decision of the Pharmaceutical Advisory Committee and has highlighted that it’s a double blow to at risk people in Western Australia who have not had the benefit of access to the drug through trial schemes. Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria have announced and implemented large scale PrEP programs funded by their respective governments.
“Its extremely disappointing that the submission by Gilead wasn’t up to the standard that PBAC could accept.” Martinez said. The HIV advocate said given the adoption of similar schemes in the USA and France it was disappointing that it is taking so long to bring in similar access in Australia. “The fact that the submission was ‘under the bar’ particularly in relation to the price point that they introduced is extremely disappointing. From our perspective it is and always will be ‘people before profits’ and it’s disappointing that an appropriate balance couldn’t be achieved.” “I salute PBAC for keeping it’s rigour, I encourage Gilead to go forward with a new submission – one that’s more realistic, more sustainable, and puts people before profits – and one that puts ending the epedemic before profits.” Martinez said.
The once a day pill has been shown to prevent HIV being transmitted from a HIV positive person to a person who does not have the virus. Several successful trials of the medication has have been carried out on the east coast of Australia over the last few years. Without government support a monthly prescription of the medications is expected to cost an individual around $750.00 each month.
Cipri Martinez, the National President of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA), said it was disappointing that access to PrEP had not progressed said it was essential that the manufacturer of the medication resubmitted their request.
Martinez said he hoped the PBAC would give some clarification to their concern about high risk people not being able to adhere to the schedule of taking a daily medication.
Despite this setback, Hastings is keen to point out that it is possible to get PrEP prescribed locally, however the high cost is an insurmountable barrier for many. “Our Government led the country in establishing an operational directive that encourages doctors to prescribe PrEP to those most at risk, but the cost and complexities of private importation are challenging.” Hastings said it was essential that the WA government worked with other state governments and the federal government to ensure that at risk people in WA had access to the same services that people in other states enjoyed.
“Potentially they are making very disparaging comments about people’s potential to take pills to protect their health.” Marinez said noting that while there may be some scenarios where people might struggle with adherence it would apply to a small minority of people who the medication is aimed at. “By far, most of the people who would be taking PrEP are more than capable of taking the pill as prescribed.” Martinez said. The NAPWHA President said the advisory committee needed to give greater explanation of their concerns in this area. Graeme Watson
Daryl O’Donnell, Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO), also said the decision was a great disappointment. “People are needlessly getting HIV while we wait for access to this prevention pill,” Mr O’Donnell said.

Southern River MLA Peter Abetz has declared he’s ready to stand at the forefront of the campaign to uphold traditional marriage. The former pastor entered politics in 2008 and has often spoken about his concerns about changing the definition of marriage. In recent months the MP has regularly promoted posts on his social media channels arguing against marriage equality and transgender rights. He’s also been a vocal critic of the Safe Schools Coalition anti-bullying program. Abetz has posted about queer issues so often that a gay constituent in his electorate recently asked if he was obsessed with gay and lesbian issues. “It’s an issue I’m very concerned about.” Abetz told OUTinPerth when we met up to discuss his concerns on marriage. “If same sex marriage is legalized in Australia, I actually believe it will massively change the very nature of our society.” “I do consider it to be the number one social issue facing our nation in terms of which way we go. A lot of the mainstream media don’t always report some of those problems which emerge from legalising same sex marriage – so I do think of my Facebook page is one place where I can alert people to some of these issues.” Abetz said there were several reason’s he’s opposed to allowing same sex couples to marry. “The number one thing is children. Marriage is the institution that emerged or was ordained, every culture has had some form of marriage and the key issue has been to have men stay with the women long term for the nurture of the children they produce.” “My concern is that children do best with a mum and a dad, because the gender differences do bring different aspects to the nurture of a child.” Abetz said. “By legalizing same sex marriage we’re essentially institutionalising that a child can be denied the benefit of having its biological mother or father. The MP said he appreciated that there are families where a parent dies and that sole parenting does happen but he said we should never deliberately set out to create a situation where children don’t have parents of both gender. Abetz described WA’s landmark law change in 2002 that allowed gay people the right to adopt as a “sad step” we took as a society. “Given the very few children that are available for adoption, there’s plenty of heterosexuals who’d love to adopt a child and give that child the benefit of both a mother and a father, there is really no need for same sex adoption in our state.” Abetz said.
who’ve been in long term relationships have actually bothered to get married. The interesting thing is that when you ask these people why they haven’t – they say ‘it’s not marriage.’”
“As a parent want to influence my children as much as I can, they obviously make up their own minds eventually, but in terms of the input my children get, as a parent want to be in control of that to a significant degree.”
Challenged with accounts of larger numbers of take ups in Great Britain, Ireland and New Zealand, Abetz moved on to some of his other concerns about marriage equality.
Abetz said he didn’t think people under the age of 16 had a great deal of “need to know” about sex.
“One of the other real concerns I have about same sex marriage is that in jurisdictions where it has been introduced its lead to a massive erosion of freedom of speech and freedom of choice, in terms of people having to violate their conscience.” Listing examples of bakers and photographers associated with the wedding industry who’ve ended up facing law suits overseas, the MP said he was concerned that Australian businesses would face similar consequences. Alongside his opposition to marriage equality Abetz has also spoken out against the way gender identity and sexuality is handled within the education system. “Children growing up go through different phases, they’re going to have different insecurities, uncertainty. When we talk about the transgender aspect, Dr Goosens who heads up the transgender clinic at Princess Margaret, she’s on the record as saying that 80% of the kids come through the clinic… that if it’s not encouraged, in terms of they act it out, by the time they reach mid-adolescence they’ve outgrown that desire.” Abetz said. The Liberal member said he appreciated that this still meant that 20% of children seeking treatment were transgender, but he didn’t support it being addressed in the education system. “Given the challenges and the difficulties that go with being transgender I think any system of education, or programs that are run in the community, I don’t think we should be encouraging kids to self-identify at such a young age.”
“There’s no question that a certain percentage of the population is same sex attracted, that goes all the way back in history, that’s not a new phenomenon, but to what extent should we try to normalize that which only affects a small part of the population.” Abetz said he hoped the Turnbull government’s proposed plebiscite on marriage would be pushed back further so it didn’t clash with the state election. “I think whenever you have two things happening at the same time the issues do become blurred.” Abetz said suggesting July 2017 as an alternative date for the national vote.
The MP sad he believed laws in Russia that jailed people who exposed homosexual or transgender issues to people under the age of 18 went too far, but he did see the rationale behind the laws.
“The opposition to same sex marriage is not just from people of a religious persuasion but it’s also quite strong from the average Aussie conservative population that doesn’t feel comfortable with same sex marriage.”
“I see the rationale behind it in the sense that we don’t want to influence kids to go down a certain path that later on they could regret, or just makes life more difficult for them.”
Graeme Watson
“Who knows?” Abetz said. “One of the interesting things about same sex marriage is that in The Netherlands, where same sex marriage has been in place since I think around 2000, apparently less than 10% of same sex couples
“I believe the family, mum and dad, should really have the primary responsibility.” Abetz said. “I think that sex education should be of a nature that does not push a particular ideology.
September 2016
“I don’t want that seed even put into my child’s mind, because that is not the norm. I want my children to grow up as heterosexual, that’s by far the easier pathway of life to tread rather than gay, lesbian or transgender,” Abetz said.
The conservative MP said he believed that the result a plebiscite would be fairly close, but he was confident that opposition to same sex marriage extended beyond religious groups.
Abetz said he didn’t know if marriage equality would lead to a rush of same sex couples starting families.

Abetz said he believed some of the material in the Safe Schools Coalition program gave an unrealistic representation of how often teenagers were having sex. He was particularly concerned about exercises that asked children to role play and consider what it’s like to be attracted to a person of the same gender.
Abetz said he was concerned that if young people selfidentified as being transgender, and later changed their mind, it might be difficult for them.
When it comes to sexual education Abetz said he believed it primarily was the responsibility of parents but he didn’t have concerns about it being taught in schools, only the context it was taught in.

“When it comes to things like sexually transmitted diseases for example that’s something that people at a particular age when they might think about engaging in sexual activity, they should know about the risks associated with not using a condom etc, etc – I don’t have an issue with that, it’s how it’s taught.

Fate of plebiscite remains uncertain The proposed plebiscite on marriage equality is facing a series of roadblocks from MPs and senators who oppose the public vote, leaving the fate of the Coalition government’s plan in question. South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon has announced this his parliamentary team will vote against plebiscite-enabling legislation in Canberra along with the Greens, casting doubt on the future of the public vote. The four-strong NXT will join The Greens‘ nine Senators and one MP in the House of Representatives as well as incoming Senator Derryn Hinch in attempting to block the public vote, which could see legislation halted altogether should Labor decide to block the vote. Labor have yet to announce whether or not they will join minor parties in blocking plebiscite legislation, though leader Bill Shorten and Senator Penny Wong have been vocal in their concerns about holding a public vote. Senator Wong, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, told ‘The Project’ that Labor has “real concerns about a plebiscite”, describing the national vote as “expensive, divisive and non-binding.”
WA Labor leader Mark McGowan has announced that if he wins next year’s state election he’ll introduce legislation to quash historical convictions for LGBTI people convicted of crimes that would not be illegal today.

Attempted acid attack at Sydney venue A man has been arrested after allegedly being caught putting hydrochloric acid into lubricant dispensers in a Sydney sex-on-premises venue. NSW police have confirmed that a 62 year old man was arrested after allegedly putting the highly corrosive acid inside dispensers in a room within a club. It is understood that the club in question is Aarows in Rydalmere in Sydney’s north west. The social club, which caters to a gay and bisexual clientele, advertises that it has three floors for “adult adventures” and lists a gym, bar, sauna and health services. The man was detained by the club’s security after an alarm on the dispensers was set off. NSW police have said that the alarms were installed after previous tampering. Hydrochloric acid is a strong, corrosive acid which can produce severe burns, ulceration, and scarring if in direct contact with human skin. The man who was detained by police has been charged with several offences, including administering poison with the intent to cause injury, distress or pain, and malicious damage. The man was released on bail and is set to appear in court on September 20th.
Stefanovic nominated for LGBTI award ‘Today’ show host Karl Stefanovic has been nominated for a LGBTI award following his on-air apology for using a transgender slur.
WA’s newly formed LGBT rights group Rainbow Rights has welcomed McGowan’s announcement, and calls on the Barnett Government to give bipartisan support to Labor’s proposal. “Rainbow Rights welcomes WA Labor’s commitment to the expungement of these records and to giving an apology. We find that the apology is equally as important as it’s really the first step in a healing process.” said Jonathon Mann, the Vice Chairperson of Rainbow Rights Western Australia. “These laws really have had a very deep impact on people. People lost their jobs because of them, they lost their friends over this and they lost their families, because the state outed them.
Stefanovic is among 34 people nominated in this year’s Honour Awards in NSW. The awards acknowledge people making a positive contribution within or to towards the LGBTI community. The awards are run by the health advocacy group ACON. Acting CEO Karen Price said all the nominees had made an effort to improve the lives of LGBTI people. “The judges agreed that the finalists they selected exhibited a truly outstanding commitment to supporting the LGBTI community and deserved to be recognised for their efforts,” Price said. In fact there were so many positive depictions of LGBTI people in the media the judges had to widen the field in the category Stefanovic is nominated in. “The calibre of submissions in the Media category was particularly outstanding, which is why the judges included two extra finalists in that category.” Price said. Stefanovic was nominated for his frank apology and his story on ’60 Minutes’ about transgender teenagers. The ‘Today’ show host faces stiff competition though the other nominees include Daily Telegraph journalist Shannon Molloy who authored a personal piece about how bullying had affected him in high school, Janine Cohen from ‘Australian Story’ for her report on transgender teenager Georgie Stone and Monique Schafter from ‘7:30’.

world CHRISTIAN LEADER CALLS FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY REVERSAL NIGERIA The leader of a Nigerian Christian Group has called on all world leaders to reverse their laws allowing marriage equality. George Ogurie, President of Nigeria’s Family Federation for World Peace Unification (FFWPU) claims that allowing gay couples to wed will affect the survival of the human race. “It is unfortunate that such people will do such a thing, but they need to reverse their position for the sake of posterity and for the sake of survival of human race.” Ogurie said. The leader of the Christian group made his call as the organisation marked the fourth anniversary of the passing of their founder Korean/American priest The Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Ogurie said people’s lack of faith and adherence to religious teachings was leading to greater confusion in the world. “There is a reason for creating human being by the creator, and unfortunately when we lose thought with that creator we lose sense of purpose and everything else come to nothing, that is why the idea of gay is coming up.”
HUNDREDS PARTAKE IN BIG GAY KISS-IN UK Hundreds of people have staged a ‘Big Gay Kiss-in’ at a Sainsbury’s supermarket in London in response to a staffer asking a gay couple to stop holding hands.

Rees and Bradwell’s story made the headlines in the UK, leading to a protest at the supermarket in the form of a kiss-in.
Pride celebrations were banned in the Turkish capital this year, due to safety concerns.
Protesters reportedly danced to Donna Summer before entering the supermarket for smooches en masse. A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s was also at the event, handing out drinks and cookies. They said it was an important opportunity to show their support for the LGBTIQ community. “We do our best to make sure everyone feels welcome in our stores but occasionally we make mistakes,” the spokesperson said. “We are working hard to make sure lessons are learnt.”
PROTESTS IN ISTANBUL OVER MURDER OF TRANS WOMAN TURKEY Hundreds have rallied in the Turkish capital of Istanbul in response to the horrific murder of LGBTIQ+ activist Hande Kader. Kader, an advocate for the LGBTIQ+ community and the rights of sex workers, was found dead earlier this month in the Istanbul suburb of Zekeriyakoy. It has been reported that Kader was raped and mutilated before being immolated and left in a forest. No suspects have yet been arrested for the murder of Kader, and demonstrators in Istanbul are calling for justice. Spokesperson for Istanbul’s LGBTI Solidarity Association said protesters “will not stop until we find those responsible for Hande Kader’s murder.” Kader elicited international attention in 2015, when

POLICE USE GRINDR TO ARREST GAY/BI MEN EGYPT Law enforcement agents in Egypt are reportedly using LGBTIQ+ dating apps to track and arrest gay and bisexual men. An anonymous source told CairoScene that apps such as Grindr are being used to target queer men in across the country. “There have been a number of arrests in the last few months linked to these applications,” the source told CairoScene. Egyptian law does not criminalise homosexuality, though the LGBTIQ+ community report high levels of discrimination and prejudice. Earlier this year, an Egyptian court sentenced 11 men for “inciting debauchery”, a term often used to describe homosexual behaviour in Egyptian courtrooms. In 2014, a number of men were arrested after a video of an unofficial same-sex wedding on the Nile River went viral. “It baffles me how easily people are willing to share such personal information in a country like Egypt – it is beyond stupid,” the source opined. “I would advise anyone to be careful when dating online.”
ALL HAIL PANTI BLISS Irish drag star Panti Bliss (Rory O’Neill) gained international respect in 2014 when she delivered a heartfelt speech about oppression. The YouTube video was watched by hundreds of thousands of people and the Pet Shop Boys even set it to music. Soon Panti was travelling the world, including an appearance at the 2015 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, but her most important work was her vocal support for marriage equality in Ireland. Panti gave usa a call while holidaying in Spain to offer some advice ahead of our potential marriage plebiscite. At the beginning of the film, you define a drag queen’s role as one who must commentate from the fringes and say the unsayable. “Drag queens are a bit like puppets or cartoons. They’re slightly larger than life and people allow them a little more leeway. I see a drag queen’s role as being like a court jester, you know? He was allowed to tell the king he was fat. I see that as being part of my job.” You go on to say the reason why you choose that occupation, is because people are always judging our (LGBTIQ+) relationships from the sidelines. An all too familiar sentiment as our country potentially heads to a plebiscite on marriage equality.

Presented by the creative minds that brought LIMBO to Perth, Strut and Fret are returning to entertain us in spectacular style. Blanc De Blanc combines incredible talents from the worlds of cabaret, circus and acrobatics for an opulent extravaganza that promises a few surprises. Feminist performance artist Emma Maye Gibson bring her special brand of high-camp performance to the Blanc stage, challenging perceptions of the female form. The surreal showgirl spoke to OUTinPerth from Edinburgh Fringe Festival to tell us about the champagne cabaret. What sets Blanc de Blanc apart from other shows of this kind? Blanc de Blanc brings together a dynamic cast of cabaret and circus kooks and creatives. It’s uniqueness comes from its unashamed celebration of the wild party spirit and the genre smash of dance, vaudeville and burlesque that each artist participates in. Our whole cast moves together - it’s a real throwback to classic variety smashed with nightclub spectacle. Many of us already know you as glorious sex clown Betty Grumble. Do you perform in this show as Betty or will be meet Emma? Within the Blanc world I am Emma Maye - but I certainly do get my Grumble on. What can we expect from Emma in the show? You can expect me to misbehave, rave, extract and project my special brand of sex clownery across the stage. We are nude, rude and professional bubbling idiots. What’s it like collaborating with people whose disciplines are so different from your own? It’s healthy! The best breeding ground for original ideas and motivations comes from mingling with bodies of difference. Each cast member brings their own skill set to the table and we share and influence each other. What the Blanc world holds are not only different skills but a vastness in personality and style. The world is eclectic but the family vibe strong. When you go to a circus show - what do you personally enjoy in a performance? An authentic and transformative connection to the audience. The heralding of big laughs and light and a sense of solidarity at the end of the play. I want to be transported to a magic place and reminded of our diverse humanity. Blanc de Blanc is at the Regal Theatre, Thursday September 29th at 7:30pm. Tickets available from Ticketek.

What kind of events do you run?
What have you got planned for the Pride Parade?
We have had over 100 events since we formed in April 2015. We run events which include board game and video game meetups, murder mystery dinners, beach BBQs, karaoke nights, laser tag and we even had a Eurovision finale sleepover. We also have a semi-regular board game meetup dedicated to women and trans members.
Rainbows. Specifically, our theme is based off the famous ‘Rainbow Road’ race track from Nintendo’s Mario Kart. It represents the Perth Gaymers well due to its fun and social gaming aspect. We plan to light up the road itself into a rainbow and race on it in homemade karts. We also have a hologram in the works. Too ambitious you say? The overall parade theme is ‘#lovewins’, and we plan to win the best parade entry too. We Gaymers get competitive.
What are your most popular events? Most of our events draw a group of 20-30 people on average. Our regular flagship event, Strategy Sunday, is a board game meetup that proves to be quite popular in introducing new members and hosting a chill environment. Our biggest event, however, was our Quiz Night. It drew 100+ people and raised over $1000 for our Pride Parade fund.

An all new alternative affair for the LGBTIQ+ community is coming to Leederville this Saturday featuring roving performers, costumed capers and queer DJ’s on the decks. Presented by the Bent-Femme Finishing School, Glory Republic offers a new space for Perth’s queer community to gather and enjoy an impromptu performance with their cocktail or just work it out on the dance floor. Emma (AKA DJ Scissorfist), along with companion Adelaide, have brought together some of WA’s best queer female-identifying performers for a camp evening with echoes of the ballroom scene. “We decided we need a new space to go and dance and express our love for performance,” DJ Scissorfist said, “A place where people can participate and express themselves however they choose to do that.” Queer comedians Alissia Marsh and Helchild will be cruising the crowd early along with strip artist Stacy Star and the untameable Ginger Laminge before they take to the stage for four main shows. Cigarette girls will be offering safe sex packs, which DJ Scissorfist says should “amp the crowd up early!” Scissorfist will be keeping the dance floor queer all night along with fellow DJ’s Skirt Cobain and Carmageddon. Costumes are heartily encouraged by the team at Glory Republic, and the theme for this month’s party is “something you wouldn’t wear during the day.” Those who come decked out in their least appropriate day-wear will be rewarded at the door with cheap entry. The Glory Republic Queer Launch Party is Saturday 10th September from 8pm 1am at Babushka Leederville. Tickets available from Trybooking.com Image:- Wild Kat Photography

of themselves via the cuts and textures they are choosing to adorn their bodies with. For me, it’s all about choice. Some of our best clients are people you’d never expect in our stuff but it brings something out in them: it awakens a part of them they didn’t actually know was there. Our clothes let your wardrobe evolve into something that wasn’t there before. Fast fashion is so last decade. Now the focus is on slow-fashion: made-to-order clothes locally produced by small teams of artisan garment makers using organic and ethically sourced fabrics. Enter Hoodedwept, a Perth label into their second season, who are already making splashes around town after their incredible STYLEAID debut. OUTinPerth stopped by the label’s headquarters in Claremont to chat to designer Neil Sheriff about the new fashion tribe Hoodedwept is helping attire…and how! Tell us about the new season, Kintsukuroi, based on the Japanese art of healing with gold? It’s all based around the idea that anything broken is enriched for being broken and reconstructed, so you’re actually enriched by your breakage as opposed to being damaged goods. SS17 is quite monochromatic: key colours are this antique dusty gold that look like it’s been wrenched from a Roman grave, platinum cotton, and this really pale khaki that we’re calling seagrass. It’s all very beautiful with a wistfulness to it, but still quite strong and very much of the tribe that will connect with it.
There’s nothing like catching up with a few friends for Yum Cha, and a good gossip while sipping Chinese Tea. After a while all the different Yum Cha places can seem quite identical. Dragan Palace however featured lots of tasty morsels we hadn’t encountered before, plus they make perfect Shanghai Dumplings. It’s very busy and you might wait up to 40 minutes on weekends to get a table, but it was worth the wait. Dragon Palace is at Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre.
There’s a real warrior-esque edge to your clothes yet the fabrics are incredibly soft: tell us about this duality in Hoodedwept? There’s a massive edge of survivalism to what we do. As creatives, generally, you do have to be quite survivalist. You don’t have to be like this badass military bastard: you find a lot of guys bulking for the sake of bulking in a gym. A lot of the girls want to be thin for the sake of being thin. It’s more about connecting with something broader than that: bringing inner strength into your outer strength. People like soft textures next to their bodies, but they also like to feel strong. So we try to keep the silhouette strong but the fabrics soft: we create a knife edge of strength and vulnerability.
Nobu
lunch
Sleek, sophisticated and filled with Japanese fusion delights. Nobu is a place where it’s as much about being seen and is it is about eating the delicious food, so dress up a little. Amazing sushi and sashimi to start followed by a Bento box that featured a streak dressed with a South America sauce – not entirely traditional Japanese, but very scrumptious. Book a table hear for your next celebration. Nobu is at Crown in Burswood.
Stand out pieces this season include the Templar Hoodie, Combat Denim Trench, Yakuza Bomber and Kansha Bamboo Maxi-Dress. Visit hoodedwept. com to check out these styles and more! Scott-Patrick Mitchell
Tell us about your tribe? It’s mainly creative professionals that seem to connect with what we do. A big part of the ethos behind Hoodedwept is storytelling. We want people to connect with something beyond the garment itself. But on a more commercial level it’s about easy-care, easy-wear, edgy day pieces that you can weave into your broader wardrobe.
Mashawi Morrocan and Middle Eastern Just opened on Beaufort Street, this new Middle Eastern restaurant serves some very flavor filled platters. We sampled the Hairira soup, slightly spicy with tender chick peas and vegetables. For the main we delved into the Lamb Afrah, slow cooked with a tomato sauce and served over fluffy couscous. The selection of dips and breads was also tempting. This is a place you need to take five friends along to so you can sample as much of the menu as possible.
How do you hope your clothes empower the wearer? I hope it helps people connect with their own authenticity and gives them courage to be a more authentic version
Mashawi is located at 644 Beaufort Street, Mount Lawley.

Anthony Callea Backbone Anthony Callea’s sixth album is predominantly covers. A friendly sing-along with an acoustic guitar and piano. Kicking things off with Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’, which is much more laid back than the original, Callea tackles songs by Wilson Phillips, Pat Benatar, Steve Winwood, Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Go West and tohers. Callea tackles Queen’s ‘Something to Love’ acapella which showcases his vocal abilities. A ballad version of Banarama’s ‘Love in the First Degree’ is a highlight, while a gender swap take on TLC’s ‘Unpretty’ is nice too. Your Mum might like this one for Christmas.
Britney Spears Glory Auto-tuned to kingdom come Britney’s ninth record is a clever balance between her trademark pop sound and enough new elements added to make it interesting. Lead single ‘Make Me’ is a mid-tempo number that sounds far more sophisticated than recent hits. ‘Do You Want to Come Over?’ is sexy and captivating, but ‘Private Show’ makes Britney sound like a chipmunk. An additional track on the deluxe version, ‘If I’m Dancing’ is a bit different. With elements of tropical house and reggae-lite throughout this is a summer sounding record, but at 18 tracks it’s long, and gets repetitive.
Barbra Streisand Encore Babs teams up with an odd assortment of Hollywood actors to sing show tunes. This is her 35th album and it struggles to rise above the gimmick of odd pairings. Star Wars Daisy Ridley and Anne Hathaway are up first with ‘At the Ballet’ from ‘A Chorus Line’. Patrick Wilson duets on ‘Sondheim’s ‘Loving You’, while Anthony Newley appears to sing ‘Who Do I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)’ from his musical ‘Roar of the Grease Paint – The Smell of the Crowd’, later Seth Rogen pops in to sing another Newley song ‘Pure Imagination’ from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. A lovely edition is Barbra performing Sondheim’s ‘I’m Losing My Mind’. Overall it’s pleasant but odd.

Maarten Devoldere is a member of the Belgium band Balthazar, here he steps out with a solo project under the moniker Warhaus. Lead single ‘The Good Lie’ oozes cool with a sultry female backing vocal from Sylvie Kreusch that recalls Lee and Nancy Sinatra. ‘Against the Rich’, features a tight brass section, ‘Wanda’ sounds like it’s recorded in a sultry jungle, ‘Time and Again’ is a beautiful sounding tune. Devoldere’s dry vocal delivery channels Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Shane McGowan.
One of the most demanded DJ’s touring gay bars and queer parties across the globe, DJ Grind is making is Perth debut at Connections Nightclub this September. We caught up with the award winning DJ and producer about his encounters around the world and what to expect at the upcoming Construction party. You’re constantly touring the world’s gay circuit and playing some massive parties - you must have tales to tell! Ha! Yeah -- I’ve seen the world from a very unique perspective, that’s for sure. In all honesty, what resonates the most as I travel from city to city is the tremendous love and support within our community, and the sense of community that still exists among gay men on the dance floor. Even though LGBT people have made tremendous progress toward mainstream acceptance, there’s still no place more free and liberating than a dance floor -- surrounded by friends, experiencing music, and enjoying a sense of shared community. It’s where so many of us feel most at home, and it’s a common thread that unites us as gay men across every region of the world. What can Perth expect from a DJ Grind show? It’s my first visit to Perth, and I’m excited to bring an uplifting set with lots of vocals and happy energy. My primary goal as a DJ and producer is to bring joy to the dance floor. That’s my signature sound. For me, it’s about celebrating life through music. What’s your go-to dance floor filler right now? It’s been a year of big anthems, and I’ve been grateful for the audience response to several of my tracks this year - including my Billboard Top 5 single with Inaya Day & Toy Armada, ‘One Night in Heaven,’ and my Pulse nightclub tribute remix of Andra Day’s ‘Rise Up.’ Both tracks mean the world to me, and it’s been very moving to see audiences around the world respond so positively to these two productions, in particular. What tracks do you throw on to get pumped for a set? When I’m preparing for a night out, I love to play to deep house and techno. It just fires me up and puts me in the “zone.” I’m a huge fan of Mark Knight’s podcasts on Toolroom Radio, and Dogglounge Deep House Radio on iTunes. Since you haven’t been to Perth before... where’s the best place in the world to party? That’s a tough one -- I have lots of favorites! Headlining Sydney Mardi Gras two years ago was a very special experience. There’s nothing in the world quite like it! I also LOVE playing big outdoor parties, and there are four events that will always be special to me and my career -- White Party Palm Springs (Tea Dance), Winter Party Beach Party, XLSIOR Mykonos, and H&H Bahia (Brazil). You just can’t beat playing a gig under the stars. DJ Grind will be at Connections Nightclub for Construction; a men’s only dance party with Hello Sailor

The MoveMe festival returns this month bringing a fantastic program of dance works to the Western Australia. Among the highlights is C03 performing a new work from Artistic Director Raewyn Hill. ‘Cry’ is a complex work where dancers portray different emotions. Ronan Keating is possibly one of the hardest working people in show business. This year he’s appeared in a West End musical, released his tenth solo album ‘Time of My Life’, finished his first season on ‘The Voice – Australia’ and headed off on a tour around the world. OUTinPerth chatted to Ronan as he finished the German leg of his tour and he said the experience was living up to the tour’s title, he really is having the time of his life. “It’s going great, I just finished the German dates which was fantastic. We did Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg. We’re travelling to Belfast early in the morning and I’m really looking forward to the next step which is the UK and Ireland, which is going to be very exciting. Keating said he was looking forward to the tour’s final date in Perth’s Kings Park in November. “It’s always exciting to finish in Perth, it’s such a special place. I love that city. We always have a really big night at the end of the tour.” Keating said. “It’s a brilliant venue, it’s like playing a big outdoor festival.” Keating has described his latest album as a record he’s been waiting his whole career to make. The songs included on the record are very personal and Keating had a big hand in the song writing. “It’s kind of happened organically, I wasn’t forced into writing or making the record. I’d been in ‘Once’, the musical for four months and I came out of the show and I was just energized, I was playing more guitar, I was singing more. I was writing more.” Keating said after he left the show he was filled with inspiration and he was able to write songs that drew on his happiness in his personal life. Last year Keating married Australian TV producer Storm Uechtritz, his first marriage had broken down in 2010. “I wore my heart on my sleeve very much, but I think I’ve learned a lot about myself as a human being.” Keating said. “I’ve been able to put that into song.”
“Over the year being in a pop band, being in a boy band, and kind of forced into rooms to write songs with people because they’re big hit writers, that’s not always the best formula.” Keating said not having pressure to produce hits created an environment where he created the new work which he is really proud of. While he had a great time being a cast member in the musical ‘Once’ Keating doesn’t think he’ll be signing up to more musicals in the future.
Strut Dance Company are excited to be presenting DECADANCE (pictured above), a work from the acclaimed choreographer Ohad Naharin. An ever evolving greatest hits compilation of works from the Batsheva Dance Company, including some pieces never seen before in Australia. The MoveMe Festival is on from September 15-18. See the full program at www.moveme.org.au
“I never thought of myself doing a musical. It was always Stephen from Boyzone’s thing, and I loved seeing Steo in that kind of role, he was amazing – but it was never my thing. “It wasn’t until I saw this show ‘Once’ that I realized, wow – this is special, this is something I’d love to do. I didn’t know if it was something I was definitely cable of, but I gave it go.” Keating said. Keating said he found the experience really gave him an opportunity to challenge himself and learn skills, but despite being offered other opportunities on the stage he’s committed to making music and his TV roles. Ronan Keating ‘Time of My Life’ tour will be in Kings Park on Saturday 12 November. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster. Thanks to Mellen Events we have a double pass to giveaway, head to the giveaways section at OUTinPerth.com to enter. California based electronic duo Soto Voce is the combination of musicians Miguel De Vivo and Kenny Soto. The enigmatic team tend to avoid social media, but their debut video ‘Better’ has still managed to accumulate over 20,000 views on YouTube in a few weeks. One half of Soto Voce, Kenny Soto, tells us about her experience as a trans woman in the music industry and communing with the spirit of Prince. ‘Better’ explores Soto’s experience growing up in Oakland, California and her struggle for self-acceptance and to acknowledge her identity. Growing up, Soto found solace and self in making music. Now, Soto says her identity rules her work and vision. “I’d love to create my own personal pronouns. For example I’d like mine to be shit like, “$he Goddess”, maybe “Miss
C*nt Face”, or simply “King Bitch” a la my favourite MC the Ill Na Na herself Foxy Brown. But those are all nouns. Been a long time since English class.”
“I have been speaking with the recently departed spirits of Prince and Michael Jackson and they are seriously considering doing a new song with Miguel and myself. Nothing has been finalised but it’s definitely in the works.”
Soto is making new fans across the world as ‘Better’ gathers more traction, but she says she has had to work had to get a start in the male dominated industry.
Expectedly pleased to be returning to the studio, Soto tells us shooting the accompanying video for ‘Better’ was a gruelling trial in the desert.
“Feminine is deemed as weak, and femininity like mine as weird. However, in an ever-evolving time where truth and fallacies often coincide and confuse - combined with pop culture’s need to expand and shock - it was inevitable to me that the mass appetite was craving for a creature such as myself and in time I would be a precious commodity.”
“They called me a diva for most of it, but honestly I don’t see Mariah Carey redoing my scenes anytime soon…” Soto Voce’s debut single ‘Better’ is out now
Now ready to cure that hunger, Soto says they have almost completed their first LP. Soto says the duo are just holding out for a star cameo.

Lessons learned in a month in the online dating world. Mating rituals have been relatively consistent ever since the first Cave Daddy figured out a tree branch could be a dating device and clubbed his first Otter and dragged him back to the cave for some discreet NSA samesies time. As evolution has unfolded lessons from Cave dweller dating have been learned. Dating & sex in the digital age isn’t that different, we just have smarter tools. Instead of clubs there are Scruff woofs, Grindr likes and Tinder superlikes. Or if you’re on Pink Cupid then you could be married to the woman of your dreams within a week, as long as you can figure out how to work your damn phone of course. In the name of scientific research I donned my digital dating cap and set forth to explore the virtual match making terrain. With varying degrees of success. Lesson One: My first dip into the dating pool began after a perfunctory five minute conversation, details were exchanged and what followed is what can only be described as a serious long term three hour relationship. That ended rather abruptly when I realised that his extensive doll collection had been watching us all along with their creepy chucky doll eyes the whole time.
Eurasian Cuisine - Fully Licenced - Live Music every Friday night in January
The lesson learned? If a thousand dollies are watching you have sex, that’s a deal breaker because the call is coming from inside the house. Lesson Two: After a protracted flirtation about common interests, life goals and mutual beliefs it seemed I had stumbled across the most elusive online gay creature, the “potential husband”. Unfortunately when it came to an eventual in person meet it became abundantly clear that there was zero real world chemistry. But being a determined journalist I restored my faith in my phone by hooking up with his next door neighbour instead. The lesson learned? Grindr will lie to you...but it can still come with unexpected bonus sex thanks to GPS technology. Lesson Three: Online trawling needn’t be just about sex. Sometimes there’s nothing better to liven up a party than to hijack a friends phone and play a game called “pass the profile”. Each player gets one chance to send the cheesiest pick-up line to a random member of the Grindrverse. The rules are clear that it must obviously be a joke, and the winner is determined by who gets the funniest responses. It’s surprising how many people actually get the joke and join in the fun.
Bookings call: 9272 7738 Email bookings bookings@chapelsonwhatley.com.au View our menu & more info on facebook. www.facebook.com/chapelsonwhatley Also check facebook for up to date performances
The lesson learned? Online searching for dating, sexting, snapshagging, group fun or NSA dogging needn’t be devoid of a sense of humour. From the primitive technology of the Cave Daddy club to the modern equivalent of the smartphone, the search for sex, love and the right tools to find them continues. Clinton Little

The WA AIDS Council are launching WA’s inaugural Queer International Film Festival next week and will be screening seven of the best LGBTIQ+ films from around the world at The Backlot Perth. Festival Director Mark Reid said he was on a mission to offer Perth audiences thought provoking cinema as he was developing the festival program. “I didn’t want to put films in the festival that were happy ever after films,” Reid said. “It needed to show the depth of film-making that’s still happening out there.” The lineup includes films from across the globe including the USA, South Africa, Germany and The Netherlands. Many of the films will have their Australian premiere at the Queer International Film Festival, such as the opening night feature ‘Jonathan’. ‘Jonathan’ follows a 23 year old who sacrifices himself by taking care of his cancer-striken father and works on the family farm. A long buried family secret buts the father-son relationship to the test. The International Emmy Award nominated ‘Boys’ well also be a first for Australian audiences, along with original South African story ‘While You Weren’t Looking’ and the closing night film from the USA, ‘Those People’. The Queer International Film Festival is hosted with support from The Film Collaborative and M-Appeal. All proceeds from the seven-day event will go to support the essential work of the WA AIDS Council. Perth’s inaugural Queer International Film Festival runs September 9 – 15 at The Backlot, 21 Simpson St, West Perth.

The show has an impressive cast including Yael Stone (Orange is the New Black), Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones), William McInnes (The Slap), Danielle Cormach (Wentworth), Simon Burke (Devil’s Playground) and Ben Oxenbould (Fatty Finn)
Is Angela Lansbury joining Game of Thrones? Could Angela Lansbury be heading to Westeros? The ‘Murder She Wrote’ star is reportedly likely to be appearing in two episodes of the next series of the show. When the 90 year old star was in Perth a few years ago she told us she had no desire at all to sign on to another TV show but maybe all those murders are just too much temptation for TV’s greatest super sleuth.

The study has found however that increasingly character’s sexuality is being presented as a non-central part of their story line.
More queer characters needed in Australian drama Screen Australia has released a report that measures the level of diversity represented on Australian TV screens. When it comes to LGBTI+ characters, we’ve still got a long way to go. When beloved Australian actress Noni Hazelhurst was given a lifetime achievement award at the Logies, she described the Australian screen industry as moving at a glacial pace when it came to embracing diversity. Now a new report from the nation’s peak body for the screen industry has shone a light on how the television industry can embrace diversity and give an accurate representation of who we are. The ‘Seeing Ourselves’ report notes that when it comes to casting actors in television dramas who we are on screen is a far cry from who we are in real life. The report notes that the casting of predominantly white, and straight actors is not just a problem in the casting rooms but also linked to the writing and development of TV series. When it comes to characters who identify as sexually diverse 5% of characters on Australian TV programs are

Of note was the ABC’s ‘Janet King’ where the high flying lawyer’s love life was presented in a casual way, Nicole Da Silva’s character Frankie in ‘Wentworth’ and Grytton Grantley’s portrayal of gay Dad Kane in ‘House Husbands’.
from the LGBTIQ+ spectrum. The report notes that 11% of Australians identify as being somewhat LGBTIQ+, so there is a significant under representation.
The TV series ‘Wonderland’ included a bisexual character, one of the few occasions a character has been presented with non-binary sexuality. While the TV mini-series ‘Carlotta’ tackled transgender issues by bringing the life of one of Australia’s most well known transgender people to the screen.
While there have been gay characters in ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Offspring’, Marta Dusseldorp has portrayed lesbian lawyer Janet King in both ‘Crownies’ and its spin-off ‘Janet King’, and Josh Thomas has featured in ‘Please Like Me’, when you add them all up, we’re still under-represented.
TV writer Bevan Lee, who is originally from Perth, shared that when he created the popular show ‘A Place to Call Home’ he did a lot of research with older members of the LGBTIQ community to find out more about attitudes toward homosexuality in the 1950s.
When queer characters do appear they are often ‘the only gay in the village’. The report notes that many characters in TV programs don’t have a declared sexuality.
There report also uncovered some feeling that actors identifying as LGBTQI were being overlooked for roles or considered not a right fit.
Of 199 dramas broadcast from 2011 – 2015 27% contained at least one queer character. That’s 88 characters across 53 programs. More male characters were featured, in fact gay male characters appeared almost three times more than female characters. There were 62 male characters and 26 female characters, the female characters included just two transgender characters in Australian dramas. There were no intersex characters.
One interviewee said openly gay actors still struggled to be cast, and gay role soften went to straight actors.
The ABC’s comedy ‘Outland’ featured a whole cast of gay characters, but predominately shows had just one gay character at a time.
“I find there is a stigma still attached to out gay actors; comments are often ‘too gay’. And when a gay role comes along I find most of the time the actors who are auditioned and who win the role are in fact straight.” the interviewee said. The Queen of Ireland (PG) Directed by Conor Horgan
When filmmaker Conor Horgan started making his crowd-funded documentary about Rory O’Neill and his drag queen alter-ego Panti Bliss five years ago, he could never have predicted that the ‘giant cartoon woman’ would change history. There’s some delightful home footage of a very young Rory prancing around for the camera before archival footage shows Panti really emerging when Rory did insanely popular drag shows in Japan. Back home in Ireland, Panti becomes an accidental hero as the spokesperson for the victorious ‘yes vote’ in Ireland’s referendum on marriage equality. This is a celebration of a humble and brave person who just wanted to be the same as everybody else as well as a celebration of a turning point for LGBTIQ people in Ireland. The film comes full circle when the gay boy who ran away from the small town in County Mayo, returns to be celebrated as a national heroine.
Girl Asleep (M)
Captain Fantastic (M)
Me, Myself and Her (M)
When shy Greta Driscoll (Bethany Whitmore) makes friends with the terminally gawky Elliot (Harrison Feldman) at her new high school, she becomes the target of bullying triplets. Although set in a stylised 1970s Australia, this is a universal story of adolescent struggles. As her 15th birthday draws nearer, her embarrassing parents insist on throwing a huge party. A horrified Greta escapes from the mayhem of the party to find comfort with her childhood music box. Not wanting to be drawn into the complexities of schoolyard battles and romantic entanglements, she walks into the bush behind her house. Based on the stage production of the same name that Rosemary Myers also directed, this is a magical, musical journey that takes the audience back all the 70s eccentricities. It also hurls the audience into the middle of the teenage nightmares of Greta’s ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ imaginary world.
Viggo Mortensen is Captain Fantastic, filling almost every frame of this film with his intense rugged energy. As Ben, a devoted father with six children, he has lived off the grid for 10 years in an improbable paradise in the woods of the Pacific North West of America. His homeschooled children are experts in survival, but when tragedy strikes, they are forced to engage with mainstream America and question their teachings. Actor turned writer/director Matt Ross played the conflicted, closeted homosexual in the television series Big Love. Ross was raised by his mother and spent some of his childhood on Californian communes and did feel the need to find out about life outside sheltered communities. The family’s road trip across Middle America to meet with estranged family and go to their mother’s funeral is catalyst to many humorous situations. But it is Mortensen who anchors the film with compassion.
This year’s Italian Film Festival (screening at Cinema Paradiso and Luna SX 22 September - 12 October) showcases the best films from Italy’s leading ladies. This romantic comedy about two older lesbians stars Margherita Buy as Fredrica and Sabrina Ferilli as Marina. Both women are successful – Fredrica is an architect and Marina is a successful actor turned restaurant owner. Both women like long drives in the country, sunset walks and good wine and food. Although blissfully happy for 5 years with their stunning apartment and Bengal cat, Fredrica has unfinished business with a former boyfriend and strays. Fredrica, who was married and has a son, maintains she wasn’t a lesbian, although she fell in love with a woman. Marina is secure in her sexuality and even has interlocking female symbols tattooed on her hand if you look closely. The film tackles serious issues in a light-hearted way and will inspire discussion.

felt they couldn’t yet play with the big boys. Or don’t want ever to play with the big boys. Or simply want a night of original, all-female voices. On a broad (sorry) level, these nights often allow the audience to be privy to narratives and lifestyles unlike their own, which is both refreshing and necessary for progression both within feminism and entertainment itself. Who will be standing in front of the mic at your next event?
(and ultimately unfunny) Other—whether that means we are the enemy, the stereotypical foil to some honest bloke who just wants to drink late at the pub without being nagged, or any other tired stereotype some cis-het guy came up with in the early 1980s and many more cis-het guys since have been unable to let go of. So, any comedy where women have personalities/ are human people? A radical notion. Pretty sure I just paraphrased a popular T-shirt slogan there, but what can you do. Why is it important we have a space for this type of comedy?
Perth has a lively comedy scene but a new night aims to tap into a specific audience, this month the aptly titled ‘Feminist Comedy Night’ has its third outing. Event organizer Alyce Wilson traded emails with us to bring us up to speed on why feminist comedy needs its own space. Tough question, and I feel like my answer is overly simple, but I would describe feminist comedy as any sort of comedy that doesn’t portray women as this mysterious
It’s important to me on a personal level because I’ve found it difficult to perform after the type of aforementioned humour—I mean, if the audience is laughing AT women (or more accurately, this woman character the extremely uncreative male comedian has drawn for his audience), I felt like whatever I was going to say automatically had zero worth. I mean, if everyone just laughed at what he said, why would they relate to whatever I’m gonna say? Stronger women than I can follow that material—and absolutely kick boring, patriarchal ass. And so much power to them for that. But my own “comedy career” was short lived due to that pesky anxiety, so I started wondering if there were other women who wanted to get on stage but
One of the many things I like about this event is that many of the performers keep coming back for more so if you’ve attended one of these nights, there’s some familiar faces. I literally can’t get rid of them. They’re part of the furniture at this stage. Lucky they’re so funny! Speaking of which, Alissia Marsh (the ukulele-wielding powerhouse in the photo) is running the show on September 11. The lineup is always a mixed bag of emerging and established female comics, and I’m still adding to the current bill, so shoot me an email at feministcomedynite@gmail.com if you’re reading and want to give it a shot! Do you think feminists should laugh at themselves more often? I do! I think we are living in an interesting time of social change and progression and we are simultaneously succeeding and failing on so many levels with equality. Comedy is a vehicle for expression like any other art (haha) form, so absolutely use it explore your position in society! Embrace the self-deprecation and uncertainty- we’re laughing WITH you. Promise. At least at this event we are. Feminist Comedy 3 is at the Rosemount Hotel on Sunday September 11, tickets available from http:// rosemounthotel.oztix.com.au

The information collected will be used to make important decisions of the next few years about which schools to transfer all the gay teachers to, what patterns to add to wall paper ranges and which pop stars to idolize.
