The WA Opera is presenting The Pearl Fishers at His Majesty’s Theatre from 25 October – 5 November. Bizet’s great opera that was first performed in 1863 is set in ancient Ceylon and tells the tale of two men whose long friendship may be damaged by their love for the same woman. Robert Kemp created the sets and costumes for this new production, while many forms of theatre have moved towards minimalist sets and pared back production, the world of opera still does things to the max.

“It is pretty much to the max,” Kemp said of the opera world when he showed us the show’s amazing costumes. “It gets very technological in some places, and it gets very conceptual in Europe, but here in Australia it’s very ‘nuts and bolts’ in terms of scenery.” Kemp reflected on his long career saying things come in cycles of fashion; “Having done it for so long now I’ve seen the cycles comes and go.” Head to outinperth.com to read our chat with the man who created the wonderful costumes and sets for this upcoming spectacular opera.

Local guy Gary Namestnik is on the lookout for other community members interested in competitive swimming. Gary’s got his sights set on the World OUT Games in Miami and is seeking other people who might be interested in competing, or just improving their swimming. “I want to get more competitive and I’m looking to see if there’s other swimmers interested in international events.” Gary told OUTinPerth. Wei plays the streetwise, sharp-tongued maid Dorine, who is the clever voice of reason and speaks her mind often. Catching up for a coffee in Northbridge we asked Weir is learning rhyming couplets harder than regular lines? This successful off-Broadway musical is about two dudes Doug and Bud who are pitching a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the man who brought mechanized printing to Europe in the 14th century. To get their potential investor’s attention, the duo perform the show – playing all of the characters themselves.

Actress Emily Weir has just graduate from Queensland’s University of Technology and she jumped straight into her first professional role in Black Swan State Theatre’s production of Moliere’s classic Tartuffe – The Hypocrite.

Local talents Andrew Baker and Tyler Jacob Jones are wearing many hats in the show which is at The Hellenic Club from October 20th. Thirty characters, two men, one crazy dream.

This new acclaimed adaptation from Justin Fleming takes the iconic French play and repositions it for modern day Australia. The new take on the story however maintains the play’s rhyming couplets.

“It’s interesting, in as way it’s easier to learn because as soon as you hit the last word of the line you know what’s coming next has top rhyme with it, but what I have found a challenge is that because in these rhyming patterns you can get stuck in a rhythm and end up sounding like a nursery rhyme.” Weir said. The charming actress shared with us her excitement as the show heads towards its opening night. Head to outinperth.com to read our full interview. Tartuffe opens on October 22nd at the Health Ledger Theatre.

Jay Weatherill, Premier of South of Australia discusses the plebiscite on Q&A

I was working from home, sitting in front of my laptop typing away on a story for our website when a Facebook message flashed across my screen. It was from a friend I hadn’t seen for a while, he asked how I was and said he had some great news to share. He told me he’d just received a government grant and it was going to make a big difference in his life. This news wasn’t unusual, my mate works in community groups and applying for a government grant didn’t seem too unusual. He said I should apply for one too, as these grants were really easy to get. Something seemed wrong, the conversation felt unnatural. I look at my friend’s Facebook profile, he had two. I remember accepting a second friend request many months ago, I just thought he’d set up a new account – maybe he forgot his password, maybe he was having separating work life and personal life. Now I realized this probably wasn’t my friend at all. The photos were the same, the personal details were identical. As the conversation continued I dropped in some lines that my friend would have questioned. I said the grant sounded good, noting that my wife Mildred and I were so hard up we were unable to celebrate our thirtieth wedding anniversary. The fraudster at the other end of the conversation didn’t bat an eyelid to my unexpected declaration of heterosexuality, or that I’d been married since I was a teenager. They just kept encouraging me to visit a web page and register for this amazing grant. I mentioned that I really appreciated the tip about grant, noting that my mate was always the best supervisor when we worked together at the Toothpaste Factory. The clone just kept on pushing the website and said that they worried I might miss the deadline. I asked the charlatan if they’d like to make any comment for this article. Their response was a suggestion about my mother which is completely unprintable. Then they blocked me. I sat back and thought about the experience, how easy it might have been to fall into their trap, and by inadvertently becoming friends with a cloned account – I’d also shared all my personal details and photos.

OUTinPerth is hosting a meeting to do some planning for the massive November PRIDE edition of the publication.

Speaking to the Department of Consumer Affairs about the prevalence of online scams they shared that there has been an increasing number of ‘phishing’ scams that aim to steal people’s personal details. The approaches often use shared interests on social media or emails that look like they come from official channels.

The Pride issue is always a massive undertaking, so we’re going to need all the help we can get.

One of the most common areas people are vulnerable is relationship scams involving online romances, last year over 130 people fell victim to these ploys and together they lost nearly $4.5 million dollars.

We are inviting our contributors and anyone who would like to come down and get involved to come by the office for a chat!

When it came to phishing scams 245 people were compromised, losing an average of $5,700 each. Altogether nearly 1000 people were scammed in some way last year, losing over $10 million dollars in the process.

The most shocking thing though, is that most of us already know that scams like these happen, but when they do happen they’re subtle, smooth and easy to fall for.

It made me remember some of the things I have done, or rather my brain has done to me, as a result of my disorder. I’ve synthesised elaborate plots in which my friends are all conspiring to stop speaking to me because they did something without me. I’ve skipped lunch because I’m convinced the dude at the register is laughing at me, just because we made eye contact. I once had to take a seat while delivering a presentation at university because I was trembling with such intensity that my tutor couldn’t understand what I was saying and he was concerned I was going to fall over.

October 8th - 15th is Mental Health Week in Western Australia and across the country, a time to raise awareness of the internal struggles that we may all face - in varying degrees, in different forms. It is fitting that our two feature stories this month are with Please Like Me stars Keegan Joyce and Hannah Gadsby, whose characters (Arnold & Hannah) both have to overcome incredible obstacles just to get by in their day to day life. Both Hannah’s hazy depression and Arnold’s debilitating anxiety disorder struck me when watching the show. Living with both depression and anxiety, never have I seen characters I could relate to more. Australian, queer, living with mental issues and struggling to endure innocuous social situations. Yep, that’s me. It cut like a double-edged sword to see that much of myself on television. What a wonderful thing to see a reality I understand represented on television after being weaned on years and years of heteronormative romance and banal dialogue on Aussie TV. Yet again; how dispiriting to be reminded of those dreadful lows of my own mental instability. There was a particularly resonant moment for me at the beginning of the program’s third season. Arnold, now in a relationship with Josh, shares some of the absolutely irrational things he has done to placate his anxiety. It’s a beautifully cathartic moment, where Arnold allows himself to be vulnerable and Josh is allowed to know his partner a little better. Arnold calls Josh to say he bought too many groceries and couldn’t carry them home so he stole a shopping trolley. What is a totally banal activity for Josh sends Arnold spinning into a full-fledged anxiety attack, bolting down the street as he’s convinced the police are tracking the stolen cart.

Reliving these moments made me realise that there has been change. I can look back and laugh at myself, I can recognise when I am being irrational and I am able to recognise when anxiety is taking control. I am fortunate to be able to see progress in myself, but for others it is not so easy. Their issues may manifest in different ways, far more intense or dangerous than my aforementioned lapses of judgement. They may not even recognise the issue in themselves.

keegan joyce PG8

Years of building a support network of friends and family, assistance from mental health professionals, medication and patience have allowed me to reach a point where I can look back and laugh it off. I would be lying if I told you I didn’t still have my moments, those who know me may notice that some days I struggle to even look you in the eye, but I have learned to find satisfaction in incremental change and noticing changed behaviours. This Mental Health Week, I urge anyone who is concerned about their mental health to reach out to somebody they trust or a professional and share your experiences.

I especially wanted to avoid mentioning the lingering spectre of the plebiscite in this issue, but after it was revealed this month that the proposed vote on marriage equality had fast become the number one reason Australians were calling the national suicide hotline; there is no more important time to seek help if you are struggling. There is no shame in asking for help, and nothing selfish about wanting to be happy. Leigh Hill

I’ve spent a lot of my life working with boys and men to help them develop their ability to emotionally connect. We have enough ‘shut down’ men in this world. What we really need is men who are learning to be open to embracing life in all its diversity. You organise retreats for men and boys. What have you learned as a straight man that might relate directly to the experiences of gay, bisexual and transgender men? Everyone’s experience in life is uniquely their own, however there are some common things that all of us come up against. The most significant of those things is the narrow confines of masculinity. There is enormous pressure to conform to arbitrary rules about how a man is expected to Behave. We tell boys that in order to be a man you need to shut down emotionally. Don’t cry. Don’t be afraid. Don’t feel too much. Anger is acceptable. Aggression is expected. Most boys go into survival mode during high school. Fight or flight. It’s a traumatic time for all boys but probably more so if you are gay, bi or transgender. A lot of bullying happens precisely because kids are in survival mode. Everyone who is different in anyway is a potential threat; someone to fight. Do you support what Safe Schools Coalition is doing in high schools? School can be a very unsafe place. Teachers need all the help they can get if they are going to support students. Safe Schools is a great program. What we really need are programs that help students develop emotional intelligence so they have the skills to make it through tough times. That is the kind of work I’ve been doing with groups and individuals over the last few years.

Joe Douglas is a mate. We have known each other for nearly 7 years now. He has saved my life on more than one occasion. Joe is not a big fan of labels. When I said I thought he was a straight ally, he was very reluctant to take on the mantle. He would hate that I’m telling you he’s a psychologist. He doesn’t work in an office. Most of his work is done from home or around a campfire. The day I interviewed him we went walking in the bush with his dogs. Can you remember the first person you met who was LGBTI? I think I was about four. My mum and I used to walk to the shops and on the street this man would sit in the bay window of his house wearing a kimono with his face painted and black geisha wig. I remember my mum would rush us past the house. I could feel the fear coming off her in waves. I couldn’t understand why. To me he was the brightest spot on our drab grey street. Why was she so scared? When I was older I joined the army and was stationed in Hamburg. We used to go to the gay clubs because the music was better. I befriended a couple of transsexuals that used to go there. One night I spotted my friend heading out with another soldier. I wasn’t quick enough to catch them before they left. I found out later that she had been bashed.

Tell me about your work with Mankind Project and the New Leaf Workshop. So many boys escape high school but seem to get stuck in survival mode. That is an exhausting way to live. Shut down, defended and isolated describes many men’s lives. Ultimately it is unsustainable. Men struggle with depression and anxiety, often in silence. I believe that people do better when they work cooperatively to support each other. I’ve worked with Mankind Project or MKP, for almost a decade now. MKP runs weekend trainings and weekly groups that teach men how to support each other and care for themselves. That’s where I met you. Two years ago I started facilitating weekend workshops focusing on helping people develop emotional intelligence. People seem to think that some emotions are good while others are bad. I am convinced that emotions are neither good nor bad. They are just energy that needs to be shifted. The New Leaf workshops give people opportunity to explore that concept in a safe space. Do you have any advice for people who are distressed by the homophobic messages coming from anti marriage equality lobbyists? I understand how hard this can be. I get angry myself. I worry about what damage the plebiscite will do to young LGBTI people who are still in the process of coming out. It is important to acknowledge that these attacks are hurtful. It is important to give yourself time to feel the hurt, the anger and yes, the fear. It is important to connect with support in your community and with family and friends. It might be worth forming a support group that meets regularly. I would be happy to help set something like that up. Working together can be incredibly empowering. Charlie Perth

Comedian, writer, art historian and actor Hannah Gadsby is returning to WA for a stand up comedy special as part of the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s Artbar series. Having just wrapped filming on the fourth season of Please Like Me, Gadsby caught up with OUTinPerth to yarn about the last season of the show and what to expect from her performance at AGWA.

We know you write for the show as well as play the character of Hannah, is there any overlap between your character and real Hannah?

Please Like Me is the first scripted comedy from the ABC to ever receive a fourth season - did you imagine this is where you would be when you started with the show?

Do you write for other characters or just for Hannah?

I don’t spend a lot of time imagining things… I’m just always stoked they ask me back each season. It’s a really great show to work on, I mean they feed you and clothe you. Just rock up. It’s wonderful.

Oh yeah. Josh loves it. Everytime I tell him a little tale of woe you can see his eyes light up like ‘Great! Let’s put your tragic life in there!’ It’s good, as much as there is crossover, it is a creative process so you can make it either more or less pathetic.

I just work on the scenes that I’m involved in. Josh has a very clear idea of what he wants so I’ll throw him a few bits that will get us out of the scene and through the process of writing and re-writing we get there. He’s a smart boy. He wanted me based on my comedy, he knew that I have a very distinctive voice, so why muck about trying to write and rewrite it? Hannah often finds herself surrounded by other people who struggle with mental health issues. Does this come from personal experience?

You’re coming back to visit us for a show at Artbar. That’s a fitting venue for you! It’s my dream! It’s my spiritual home, a gallery! Not to talk seriously though. I like to talk seriously at a comedy show and make jokes in a gallery. I studied Art History at uni, but we’re never gonna make it because as it turns out I’m a joker. The passion for visual history is definitely there. Art’s always been a great way into working out how the world works, which is the same approach I take to comedy. Reconstructing something that happened into a story is a great way to find meaning. Hannah Gadsby will be performing at Artbar @ The Art Gallery of Western Australia on Thursday October 27th. Tickets available from artgallery. wa.gov.au Leigh Hill

Well, I live with myself. That’s living with someone with a mental illness. I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who isn’t. I think if you push people hard enough, they’ll let you know they’re a bit sad. I’ve had my time in the “Not-Fun”, let’s call it. Speaking of not fun, have you ever experiences a Christmas dinner quite like the Season 3 finale? No. My family do not make gravy from scratch. What a great way to wrap up that season. I think a Christmas lunch is a great way to pile tensions because it’s generally what happens. There’s so much pressure on Christmas to be a fun time. In the lead up to Christmas you’re always like ‘Well, we’ve gotta wrap up the year!’ Once the shops close after Christmas, it’s over. You’ve wrecked your whole year then you bring that to Christmas lunch.

Calling from a trip to his hometown of Sydney, Keegan Joyce is a far more confident man than his Please Like Me alter-ego Arnold. The 27-year-old actor, also known for his role as the son of the titular character of ABC’s Rake, is able to leave his character’s anxiety disorder on set as post-production is finalised on the upcoming season of Josh Thomas’ emotionally charged comedy. “It’s a shorter season this year, only six episodes rather than ten. Just because… I’m actually not sure why, you’d have to ask Josh. I believe it was just better for timing to get them out by the end of the year.” Joyce, who plays Thomas’ love interest and boyfriend during the second and third seasons of the show, says he has nothing but admiration for his onscreen partner, whose program is the first ABC scripted comedy to receive a fourth season. “It’s a lot for him personally to write, direct, act in, and do all the post-production on all of the episodes while simultaneously being the executive producer. Six is still a pretty big workload.” Now having spent three years with the cast filming 26 episodes, Joyce says he has become close with every member of the incredible ensemble cast. “We’re all pretty good friends and we see each other as much as time and location permits. Having spent so much time with Josh, Tom (Ward), Emily (Barclay) and Hannah (Gadsby) over the last three years has been really good because having a comfort around on set is really important. Especially for this show which is pretty easy-going most of the time but has these incredibly heavy moments… so it’s good to have your friends around while you do that.” Speaking with OUTinPerth, Joyce’s co-stars have shared some of the television firsts that had surprised them. While Josh struggled with having to remove his clothes so often in front of so many people, Hannah wrestled with having to have her first onscreen kiss. Joyce, however, was not so fussed.

8

OUTinPerth

October 2016

“I kissed my first boy on television! That was pretty huge. There is a bit more skin from Arnold this season so I’ve spent a lot of time being mostly naked around 50 - 60 people so you kind of get used to that after a while.” Joyce’s focus was drawn to developing his character and ensuring he was portraying mental illness in a respectful and realistic way. “This show has become really well known for so many incredible television firsts, in many ways. It’s important that we try to get those firsts fair, right and respectful. That is probably more nerve-wracking than having to kiss anyone or pretend to have sex. When we’re shooting I kiss Josh more than anyone else in the world. “I don’t have an anxiety disorder. Before the show I had not properly understood the difference between being anxious and having an anxiety disorder. I knew there was a difference but didn’t comprehend how huge it was. It was really enlightening for me. We spent a lot of time researching. Josh has spent so much time and energy finding out exactly what people experience. The hardest thing in the end is that people experience anxiety very differently from person to person. We try to get it as real as possible and I kind of got to turn it into my own version, which is hopefully being presented accurately and respectfully. I get really nice comments from people all around the world from people who say they can really relate to Arnold’s struggle and it’s been good to show him throughout this season and the last dealing with his anxiety, attempting to overcome it and find different ways to approach it.” Please Like Me masterfully weaves every day issues into it’s stories throughout the series, not

only dealing with mental health through Arnold and Josh’s mum Rose (who has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder), but also race, feminism, addiction, sexual health and family. The sometimes heavy subject matter is balanced with comedy and beautifully innovative use of music. Joyce says one of his most memorable moments would be when his character abruptly begins singing Sia’s power-ballad Chandelier to Josh’s father. “We had some really fun moments in the upcoming season that I think people will love. There’s definitely more singalongs. Chandelier was probably more nerve-wracking than fun for me...” Preferring to film scenes with as many of the cast as possible, as those moments tend to be less emotionally intense, Joyce says nothing brightens up the set like Kim Craig nee Day herself, Gina Riley, who will reprise her role in the fourth season as Arnold’s mother. “She’s just incredibly lovely. She’s so switched on and genuinely funny. There are these beautiful moments she has. A tiny look can crack you up. It was great to see Gina come back as Donna. We had a round table scene and she really stole the show with her jokes and hilarious moments. It’s difficult sometimes because they’re so funny and Arnold has to HATE it. The whole battle for me filming those scenes is just not laughing. The biggest struggle of my life during those weeks is not laughing at Gina Riley.” Please Like Me returns to ABC TV on Wednesday 9th November at 9.30pm Leigh Hill

We follow in the footsteps of Q-West, Shout, The Westside Observer and other queer publications that came before us. When did queer publishing start in WA? We’ll admit we didn’t know precisely, but Bill Calder – a man whose been a publisher of queer magazines in the past, brought us to speed. He’s just about publish The Golden Era for Gay and Lesbian Magazines a new book that collates the research he completed for his PhD into the history of gay publishing in Australia from 1970 to 2000. You were a part of the gay publishing world, publishing Brother Sister, Melbourne Star and BNews, what did your research reveal that you didn’t already know? I think the most fascinating thing was going right back into the ‘70s and ‘80s which was an era that I wasn’t publishing in, my publishing was in the ‘90s. The world really changed a lot across that period of time. Going back and hearing about the problems and difficulties that were being faced in the ‘70s and the ‘80s revealed a very different world. Where did gay publishing start in Australia? It was very much liberationists, is what I refer to it as, it was a movement that came out of the left, it was inspired by the women’s movement and the black rights movement and the counter culture movement.

October 2016

There was publication called Camp Inc that had a focus on wanting to totally change society, in more ways than just equal rights for gay people. That changed in the ‘80s the emphasis became much more about community, building gay communities and having equal rights. It was a big switch that occurred between the ‘70s and the ‘80s. How does Western Australia compare to the rest of the country, were we onboard at the beginning or did things in other states came later? Everything was in Sydney and everyone else came later. There was the organisation C.A.M.P – the campaign against moral persecution, that published CAMP INC and it had members in Perth. Melbourne started to have its own publications in the ‘70s and there were some early publications in Perth too. Purple Press was produced from the early to late 1970s. It was a partly typed, partly hand written publication made by a man named Ray. More professional publications came in the ‘80s. There was an attempt by some university students in the early ‘80s, a free A4 sized publication called Western Gay, but it was probably The Westside Observer that established a strong media presence in 1987. LGBTI Awards launch in Australia The founder of the British LGBT Awards, Linda Riley, has launched an Australian counterpart to celebrate and recognise those who work towards LGBT equality. The black tie event produced by OutNews Global and L Media combines corporate, celebrity, community and allied nominees in categories ranging from Politician of the Year to Celebrity Ally of the Year, recognising business people, athletes, broadcasters, journalists and more. “The aim of the Awards is to help Australia effect change on LGBTI Equality Laws, which currently lag behind many other developed nations when it comes to these key areas of human rights,” the website reads.

Pride WA Fairday under review Pride WA have released a statement on the future of Fairday following a community forum in September to discuss future timing and cost structure of the event to ensure sustainability. President of Pride WA Andrew Barker said the overwhelming message from those attending the forum was that Fairday is an essential event for the LGBTIQ community and it is imperative that the event continues.

“We will be showcasing and celebrating the best Australian LGBTI talent both in the celebrity world and the corporate world with a diverse range of categories.”

“Representatives of community groups who attended the forum stated that Fairday is the major event on the LGBTIQ calendar during the year that provided community-based organisations and members of the LGBTIQ community an opportunity to get together and connect, while celebrating the diversity and differences that make up the LGBTIQ community,” Mr Barker said.

LGBTIQ+ advocacy group PFLAG Perth have been named as one of the nominees for Organisation of the Year, and local hero June Smythe has been recognised with a nomination for a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Fairday is the main LGBTIQ event for youth to connect with and see other LGBTIQ people from all walks of life celebrating as a community, and to interact with information, assistance and community support services.”

Smythe, along with the late Margaret and John Pugh, established the first chapter of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) in Australia right here in Western Australia. This year, the organisation celebrates its 27th birthday, as Ms Smythe prepares for her 80th birthday celebrations next May.

Pride WA are committed to establishing a working group to explore various options in relation to the timing and structure of Fairday, so that they can determine recommendations to improve the sustainability of the much-loved event.

High profile winners of the UK event, which has been active since 2015, include Stephen Fry, Alan Carr, Sir Ian McKellan and Sam Smith and Danny Dyer. The Australian LGBTI Awards will be held on Thursday March 2nd 2017 at Sydney Opera House. OUTinPerth have received two nominations; Organisation of the Year & Journalist of the Year (Leigh Hill).

Pride WA will not commence any planning for the next Fairday in February of 2017 until the working group’s recommendations have been presented and discussed. The working group will be tasked with finding ways to work more closely with community groups, as well as make changes to fundraising, entertainment, event management and kids events. “We will also be looking closely at the timing of Fairday as an event following several years of Fairday as a summer event in February as part of the Fringe Festival program,” Mr Barker continued. “Pride WA will consider whether moving Fairday back into the PrideFEST program or another time is more appropriate.” Pride WA will make a formal announcement on the future of Fairday following the presentation of working group recommendations and consultations with the wider community.

world ISLE OF MAN WILL INTRODUCE GAY PARDON LAW ISLE OF MAN

FIRST BRITISH ROYAL COMES OUT UK

The Isle of Man has announced it will be moving forward with plans to pardon historical convictions for gay offences. The former Home Affairs Minister, Juan Waterson, has indicated he’s pushing for the pardon’s to be included in a new sexual offences act that will be open for public consultation before the end of the year. The announcement from the tiny self-governing protectorate, that’s located in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland, follows a similar commitment from British Prime Minister Theresa May. May has pledged to implement the Alan Turing law. Turing was a code breaker who a key member of the team that broke the Nazis’ enigma code during the second world war. Turing took his own life in 1954 after being convicted of gross indecency and undergoing chemical castration. He was pardoned for his homosexuality in 2013. Now the British government is preparing the forgive all convictions for gay offences prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality. Homosexuality was legalised in the United Kingdom in 1967 but the Isle of Man did not change their laws until 1992. LGBTIQ+ political activists on the Isle of Man have also called for the Chief Constable of the police force to issue an apology for the past actions of the police. Earlier this year Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made a similar declaration in the state’s parliament. There have been calls for the WA government to follow suit. Labor leader Mark McGowan has announced that a future Labor government would bring in similar legislation. WA’s Barnett government is considering whether or not it will take on the issue.

The Queen’s cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten has spoken about his bisexuality and how he’s now found love with his new boyfriend.

Baptist Pastor Steven Anderson has been banned from entering South Africa ahead of scheduled tour of sermons.

In a candid interview with The Mail on Sunday Lord Mountbatten has revealed that he is happily in love with his partner James Coyle, a airline cabin services director.

The Arizona pastor has made headlines in the USA and across the world for speaking aggressively against the queer community, calling for the death of all homosexuals and praising the horrific mass murder at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando.

Lord Mountbatten is the great, great, great grandson of British monarch Queen Victoria and a cousin to the current Queen Elizabeth II. He is a member of the outer circle of the royal family, and is godfather to one of Prince Edward’s children. The aristocrat was previously married and has three daughter. He split from his wife back in 2010. In the interview with the Mail last month Lord Mountbatten said his former wife was always aware of his bisexuality. Prince Edward, the Count of Wessex and his wife, and Lord Mountbatten’s family are all supportive of his decision to go public with news of his new romance. Lord Mountbatten said that he still wasn’t completely at ease discussing his sexuality but felt he could now be more open about his life. “I was driven into the closet by not wanting to come to terms with who I was and facing friends and family in the early years. I buried it. “I’m just so pleased now to have found someone who I am happy to call my partner.” Lord Mountbatten said. Lord Mountbatten, 53, said society had come a long way during his lifetime and was now much more accepting of people’s sexuality. Lord Mountbatten is the first member of the British royal family to publicly identify as being non-heterosexual.

South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has refused Anderson a visa due to his history of anti-LGBTIQ speech. “Mr Steven Anderson and members and/or associates of his church are prohibited from entering the Republic of South Africa,” Minister Gigaba said. “This prohibition will be implemented in terms of section 29(1) (d) of the Immigration Act. This section affords the department the legal means to prohibit a foreigner who is a ‘member of or adherent to an association or organisation advocating the practice of racial hatred or social violence.’” Over 60,000 people signed a petition to prevent Anderson from delivering sermons in South Africa. “I have informed the DG that I have informed Steven Anderson and members and/or associates of his church as undesirable persons,” Gigaba assured the signatories. “Undesirable persons are barred from traveling to South Africa for periods determined by the department.” The pastor was later banned from visiting the UK & Botswana following South Africa’s decision

Loton Park celebrates 100 years Loton Park Tennis Club (LPTC) is busily preparing itself for their 2016/2017 season and this year they’re celebrating something very special! This season marks the 100 year Centenary of the club, making it one of the oldest run tennis clubs in Australia. LPTC prides itself on being a friendly and open club that celebrates diversity, and has long been a special part of the LGBTIQ sporting and social community in Perth. Loton Park is a tennis club at heart and runs social and competitive play, but is also a great place to socialise and meet people. In mid-late October Loton Park will open their grass-courts and officially commence the playing season. Anyone is welcome to head down to the club and get involved in a fun and welcoming day, which will include a BBQ, activities and, of course, tennis! In early December LPTC will celebrate the Centenary of the club and its long and important history with a formal day to mark the occasion, to be attended by politicians and dignitaries. Then in January they are hosting Perth’s first Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) tournament, the Perth Lawn Tennis Championships, which is an international event and will attract players from far and wide. Add to these events there is weekend social tennis and various social sundowners and parties on the calendar – it’s set to be a fabulous year at Loton Park!

The Federal Hotel

The Federal Hotel has recently returned to its original name, for many years it was known as Rosy O’Grady’. The popular Fremantle pub is always busy and their kitchen have a great range of meals. We sampled the Crispy Japanese Chicken Salad – filled with tomatoes, carrots, coriander and kewpi mayo. One of the daily specials was a duo of sliders served with some well-cooked chips. The Federal Hotel is a great place to take a break from the markets and shopping. The Federal Hotel is 23-25 Williams St Fremantle.

You can learn more about LPTC and become a member at lotonpark.com.au, and like their Facebook page to keep up to date with news and events at the club. Loton Park Tennis Club warmly welcomes new members of all playing levels and is conveniently located on the corner of Lord Street and Bulwer Street in Perth next to NIB Stadium. Sienna’s

This November, Perth will host the inaugural Proud Awards, a glamourous evening to mark the achievements of WA’s LGBTIQ+ community and queer entertainers. With a red carpet entrance, performances from some of Perth’s best drag performers and 94.5’s Janelle Koenig on the mic, it’s sure to be a fabulous evening. We caught up with organiser Dean Misdale (AKA Feminem) to see what to expect from the sumptuous ceremonies.

Sienna’s in Leederville is an institution and if you’re after a great lunch you’d be hard to beat them on quality and price. Their $10.00 lunch time special is sensational value. We dined on a hearty plate full of Penne Pollo that included marinated chicken, roasted capsicum, mushrooms & garlic in a cream sauce, it was delicious, and we also tried the Pollo Ai Funghi – tasty scaloppine served with mushrooms, potatoes and a salad.

What are The Proud Awards all about?

Sienna’s is at 115 Oxford Street, Leederville.

The Proud Awards has been created to celebrate Perth LGBT entertainment and the community at large. We had noticed so many members of the Perth community traveling east for similar events but we did not have one to celebrate our own performers and community so The Proud Awards were born. What categories will be included in the ceremony? There are 12 award categories which will be awarded on the night some of which have been voted on by our Proud Committee and the rest which will be voted on by the public. Keep an eye out for Entertainer of the Year, DJ of the Year, Favourite Venue, Hall of Fame and Best Community Group or Individual to name just a few. What can we expect from performing queens?

Blacksmith

The line-up of entertainment on the night will be all about celebrating and showcasing the best of what the Perth has to offer.

Blacksmith is a new eating venue in Highgate. it’s filled with amazing furniture, and the staff are really down to earth and friendly. There’s so much good food to choose from, the burgers people were eating at the next table looked amazing. We sampled the scrumptious fennel and pork sausage rolls and the Chicken Karage which was served on a trio of Bao buns with coriander slaw and siracha mayo – it was all delectable. We’ll back soon to sample the rest of the menu!

What do you want to see on the red carpet? We decided not to run with a theme as this is our first ever Proud Awards so for the red carpet; dress to impress and be you most fabulous “Proud” self… you never know who will be watching and you might just take home the Belle of the Ball trophy! The Proud Awards will be at Connections Nightclub on Friday 11th November. Tickets available from Ticketbooth.

Cicero Future Boy: Complete Works Back at the dawn of the ‘90s the Pet Shop Boys set up their own label, Spaghetti Records. One of the few artists to be released under this banner was Scottish singer Cicero. His album has long been out of print but it’s recently been released with bonus tracks, remixes and practically his entire output of work. Pet Shop Boys produced a lot of the album making it a must-have for serious fans. With 26 tracks nothing’s been omitted, the remixes of Live for Today are a highlight.

Solange A Seat at the Table Big sister Beyonce casts a big shadow, but will it be Solange’s subtle records that last the test of time? This stunning collection of tunes that covers the genres of psychedelic soul, neo-funk and RnB has got everybody talking. Solange takes on serious topics like racial violence and police brutality, but several tracks also focus on mental health and self-care. It’s a smooth and sultry album featuring a stack of collaborators including Lil Wayne, Sampha, Kelly Rowland and Nia Andrews. A fine album.

Sophie Ellis Bextor Familia Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s sixth album sees the singer finding a happy medium between the indie sound she first appeared with as the lead singer of The Audience and the pop vibes she climbed the charts with at the start of her solo career. Teaming up again with Ed Harcourt who worked on her 2014 album Wanderlust, this is high quality adult contemporary music that showcases Ellis-Bextor’s distinctive voice. Highlights include the Mariachi tinged Hush Little Voices and the disco tinged Come With Us.

Craig David Following My Intuition Craig David makes a surprise return will an outstandingly fresh dance album which includes collaborations with Kayranada, Big Narstie, Blonde, Sigala, Jack Ü (Skrillex and Diplo). The latter appear on the tune 16 which combines lyrics from David’s Fill Me In, with sounds from Justin Bieber’s What Do You Mean with frantic raps. Got It Good already appeared on Kaytranada’s album, but if you get the deluxe edition there’s a second Kaytranada collaboration Sink or Swim. This is the best album in Craig David’s career.

This year for the Fremantle Festival May is bringing back her Tonight Show performances which see her conversing with other musicians and playing songs together. Her old band The Rockin’ Pneumonia are getting back together to serve as the house band. “There’s a tremendous feeling of comradery between the musicians on the night, it’s a lot of fun!” May professes giving credited to local music identity Andrew Ryan who talked her into embracing the concept. May said she’s always interested in hearing about other musicians’ experiences and the stories behind their songs.

Abbe May’s bringing her Tonight Show extravaganza to this year’s Fremantle Festival Abbe May’s getting ready to release her new album Bitchcraft and the first single Are We Flirting has been getting some serious radio airplay. Abbe May tells us when it comes to flirting, she’s pretty good at it. “I like flirting, it’s a fun way to engage with someone. It doesn’t promise anything, it’s just a fun way to have some mutual flattery. There’s a real art to it though.” “People fail when they confuse sleazy with sexy.” May advises, “People fail because they’re think about sex or getting something at the end, but really the best way to flirt is not have any outcome in mind.”

May’s new album is due out next year, she tells us that so far she’s completed ten new songs for the record, but she really wants the new collection to have thirteen tracks.

“I’m interesting in continuing that witching setting that a name like Bitchcraft insulates.” May said. “My manager really wants me to have it finished by the end of next month, but I’m like ‘Yeah – whatever’.” May laughs off the deadline explaining that she’s a big believer in allowing the creative process to occur in its own time and regrets not taking a little more time on some of her previous releases. “This time I’m just going to take my time and make sure it’s as brilliant as it can be.” May declared. Following the release of her last album May had to reassess her life after she had a health scare, May told us that she now works hard to make sure she doesn’t get too over-committed. “I don’t listen to deadline pressures anymore, I think deadlines are important, but they’re not more important than me being happy and sane. When I’m not happy and sane, I’m ineffective – I’m not able to work, I’m not able to be a good friend.” May said the biggest lesson she learned was to relinquish control of some parts of her work so she could really focus on the quality of her music and the conversations she wants to provoke via her songwriting. “Life is short,” May said, “I think it’s important to remember that and not let things overwhelm you.” Abbe May present Tonight Show at The Fremantle Town Hall on October 31st. Ethereal pop sensation Joni in the Moon will be joining the incredible Fremantle Festival lineup this year to perform in the beautifully Gothic church that stands in the city’s centre. We caught up with Joni for a quick chat ahead of the festival to see what we can expect.

HEAD TO FREO

This performance in the chapel is going to be quite a unique line up. It will be similar to a show we did at Disconnect Festival. We’ve got Terra on keys, we’ve got an amazing double bass player Phil Waldren who will be playing that and all of his other instruments. Terra, myself and Ofa of Odette Mercy will be on vocals. It’s more of a stripped back version of our usual set. A lot of newer material as well. We all love dressing up… you’ll just have to come as see! War and Porn was such a massive hit - has that put any pressure on your subsequent projects? I don’t put that much pressure on myself anymore. I’m just going to be writing my music, I’m not really doing it for anyone but myself. The stress of trying to conform to the industry timeline just does my head in. If people like to hear my music, then that’s great!

You’re constantly touring the world’s gay circuit and playing some massive parties - you must have tales to tell! First of all, I want to know. Why “The Moon”? How awesome is the moon? I have an ongoing obsession with the moon. I also like playing around with gender: there always used to be a man in the moon so I said ‘Why can’t I be in the moon?’ So you’re telling me you didn’t name yourself after The Moon Cafe? No, but what an institution! How will a live Joni in the Moon performance match up to your surreal music videos?

Who are you personally looking forward to seeing at the Fremantle Festival? Abbe May! She’s a really close friend of mine and I friggin love her to bits. She debuted this really cool variety show last year called The Tonight Show with Abbe May and I was singing in her choir for that. I’m really looking forward to that again this year because it was so hilarious. She should have her own television show. Joni in the Moon will be at St John’s Anglican Church on Saturday October 29th at 7pm as part of the Fremantle Festival. For tickets and more information, head to FremantleStory.com.au Leigh Hill

Clare Bowditch shares with me that always lets interviewers know how to pronounce her name. As there is often confusion between whether it’s Bowditch (sounding like a bow and arrow) or Bowditch (sounding like a Korean bun). Thirty seconds later as I turn the microphone on during RTRFM’s Artbeat program and I suddenly can’t remember which pronunciation she’s just told me is correct. I take a punt and go with the first one, luckily it’s the right choice.

“By the time patients come to see me, they have been through enough emotional turmoil and it has been a long and challenging journey with many highs and lows. As a Plastic and Cosmetic surgeon it is not only my responsibility to offer an understanding of this journey but with surgery assist patients to achieve the optimal outcome in a non-judgemental environment” – Dr Patrick Briggs

The acclaimed singer songwriter laughs and says the names have always been a problem in her career. “I spent a year of my career being called Sarah, after my darling friend Sarah Blasko. I don’t know how it happened…I was constantly getting called Sarah.” Bowditch recalled. Bowditch said she’s not sure why the media and listeners struggled to differentiate between several singer songwriters appearing on the music scene around the same time. “It was a moment in time, ten years ago, women like myself, Sarah Blasko, Sara Storer, Jen Cloher, Holly Throsby, Missy Higgins. We were all able to release our music independently, if we wanted, technology changed.” Bowditch credits technological advancements as the catalyst that allowed many new female voices to suddenly be heard across Australia. Bowditch stresses though that the many female singer-songwriters who have appeared on the Australian music scene are all very different types of women, each with their own unique perspective, experiences and contributions. The singer said she’s looking forward to getting back on the road, she’ll be in Perth this month for the Fremantle Festival. Since the beginning of the year she’s been enjoying her new role as the host of the ABC’s afternoon radio slot in Melbourne, an experience she’s embracing. “It’s the most stable job I’ve had since I worked in the surf shop when I was seventeen,” Bowditch laughs, “I love it! But I’m really looking forward to being in front of a live audience and in a musical atmosphere again.” Clare Bowditch will be performing as part of the Fremantle Festival on 5 November,. Reality Bytes If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of a parental lecture that started with “at the end of the day” which is usually swiftly followed by “the reality is...” you’ll know that there are times when the real world is not enough. Sometimes an escape is necessary and in July this year the Pokémon Go phenomenon introduced a mainstream audience to the concept of an Enhanced Reality. With its enticing opportunities for monster catching and the unusual spectacle of seeing pasty faced nerds stumbling out into the daylight searching for invisible creatures it created a collision between the digital and the real world. Though it offered up the opportunity for fresh air and actual real world interaction it also had the potential to cause social disturbances. While taking a break from a Pokémonster hunt in a Fremantle cafe it gave some patrons cause for concern when one of my companions lept up from our table and began hurling his Pokéballs at an unseeable beast that was apparently hovering just above my head.

Eurasian Cuisine - Fully Licenced - Live Music every Friday night in January

Although this Enhanced Reality has attracted millions of people to download the app the novelty factor has worn off and reality has crashed the Poképarty and user numbers are in a steep decline. In search of another avenue offering respite from responsibility I sought refuge in the embrace of Virtual Reality. In a scenario reminiscent of a meeting between West Side Story and 8 Mile I found myself in the midst of a Virtual Reality battle. The opportunity to create some competitive digital art spurred me into thinking I could be a 21st Century Van Gogh. Strapped into my VR goggles and armed with dual hand controls I felt like the love child of Robocop and Stephen Hawking. The task was simple enough, paint a portrait using pixels instead of paint in five minutes against another player. I had a vision of a rainbow and set forth to recreate it. Sadly the result of my labours was less than spectacular as I failed to master my colour controls so instead of a spectrum of diversity I managed to get a few yellow and brown smudges across the screen with the words “oh fuck it” smeared over it.

With that aborted attempt at facing up to apparent adulthood I was tasked with the responsibility of caring for one of my nieces for an afternoon. As a devoted Guncle I was happy to oblige but as anyone who has ever had to care for a young child will know, the words “I’m finished!”, when hollered by a toddler from the toilet means only one thing... That there’s nothing like the reality of cleaning up another person’s shit to lead to you to the only logical solution, a game called Chardonnay Go. It might be old fashioned and not terribly tech savvy, but dammit it gets the job done. Clinton Little

in the Suburbs

Sarah Jessica Parker made her name playing Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City – a woman who spent her time hoping to get married. Her new series flips the coin and looks at the opposing journey, Bradshaw is Frances a woman whose marriage has plateaued. She’s considering getting a divorce.

Perfectly cast as her husband Robert is Thomas Haden Church, best known for his time in a marriage of convenience in TV’s Ned and Stacey. His deadpan portrayal is one of the show’s highlights. He torments Frances as this couple’s relationship implodes. The ‘will they, won’t they’ element is the opposite of what we normally see in romantic comedies, it’s not will they finally get together, it’s will they stay together – or will they break apart? As an audience we join them on the

emotional see-saw, one episode hoping they make it work, and the next hoping that they get away from each other as soon as humanly possible.

Back in 2006 Sarah Jessica Parker said she she’d never do another television series, we’re glad she changed her mind.

Frances and Robert’s lives are real. While they live in a beautiful and tidy home, they’re lives are messy and at times ugly. They’re contemplation over whether or not to end their marriage is not a simple black and white choice, it’s a world coloured in grey.

Divorce premieres on FOXTEL’s Showcase channel from Monday 12 October. Graeme Watson

Backed up by a stellar supporting cast that includes Talia Balsam (Mad Men), Molly Shannon (SNL), Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords) and Tracy Letts (Homeland). This circle of friends and lovers tackle the challenges of working out what you want when you’re into life’s second act.

film

Kyle’s Thoughts:

Graeme’s Thoughts

This is a story not of dipping your toes into our culture but rather being familiar with it and riding the waves by withholding judgement. The 1991 film My Own Private Idaho lays bare the common straight-washed LGBTI+ stories we have come to accept in 2016 and forces us to dig deeper into the root of our humanity: That we aren’t just coming out stories and comedic sidelines but actual people too.

The first time I saw My Own Private Idaho was at the New Oxford Cinema. I had to show my ID to get a ticket to see the controversial film. There had been news reports about how outrageous it was in its depictions of homosexuality. When I told my friends I’d seen the film, some of them were visibly shocked.

River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves (in what is possibly the only redeeming work I’ve seen Reeves perform in 25 years) birth a story that deals with class, abandonment, loneliness and the ever-familiar situation of unrequited love for your straight best friend. We all have a moment in our lives where the campfire scene is brutally heart-breaking for its honest portrayal of a love that cannot be due to the physical getting in the way of the emotional. Gus Van Sant’s gay hustler fable is melded with several Shakespearean epics that lends to its universality and relevance in 2016. Cut with vivid landscape cinematography and the most minimalistic fonts and colours we are transported to a time in the 1990’s where grungy, indie films were abrasive and audacious enough to elevate us out of the mundane and into a hyper-reality that we can still believe. Essentially, that is what life truly is: Heightened characters that seem unbelievable, until you realise they are the very people your memory recollects. In an age where sex and gore is splattered upon us for the sake of ‘realism’ My Own Private Idaho implies its grotesque side and makes it beautiful. We are treated to tableau for sex scenes and quasi-documentary interviews of twinkie prostitutes recounting their sexually violent histories. The film dares to experiment and go where Hollywood wouldn’t take us and for that it has stood the test of time, like all things queer and worthwhile it bent the rules and challenged us by causing us to empathise with drug-addled, homosexual callboys trapped in a world where they were never going to be accepted anyway.

I was in love with River Phoenix. It was a love affair that began three years earlier when he appeared on the over on the UK magazine SKY. I drew his picture and put in on my bedroom wall, I watched all his movies, and now here he was in a queer film. Thank you Santa. There were parts of the film I didn’t understand, but River was in and that scene where he jumps under the covers and makes sex noises with Keanu Reeves- that was everything. I’ve watched the film many times, maybe once every five years. Each time I see new things. I find new meaning, new humour and connect with different characters based on my own changing life experience. The opening scene with the salmon and the house crashing on to the road meant nothing to me. At 18 I’d never had a house crashing experience. A few years later – I was laughing hysterically. It’s a film I’ve watched over and over. It’s a great gauge for what we find risqué. We’ve gone from holding our breath when Phoenix and Reeves appeared as pornographic models on the covers of magazines in the film – to being able to access as much porn as we want on mobile phones in our pockets. Just after I saw the film I bought a rust coloured jacket with a suede collar, just like the one River wears in the film. I was obsessed, but the love affair would end just two years later when the actor died of an overdose outside LA’s The Viper Room on Halloween night 1993. My Own Private Idaho is Phoenix’s most intriguing work. I’m ready to watch it again. Graeme Watson

The Handmaiden (R)

Equity (M)

Sarah Waters’ Victorian tale of lesbian love Fingersmith has been transported to 1930s Korea when it was under Japanese colonial rule. Retaining all the gothic horror elements, this mesmerising film tells the story of two orphan girls. Nam Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri) has been raised to pick pockets and is forced to be the handmaiden for a wealthy Japanese heiress by a Korean conman posing as Japanese Count Fujiwara (Ha Jung-woo). The conman plans to marry the beautiful Hideko (Kim Min-hee) before committing her to a mental asylum and claiming her inheritance, but he is not aware of the growing eroticism between the two women. Broken into three parts, the film changes perspective to reveal hidden motives and unexpected twists. Gaining its ‘R’ rating with lashings of sensual sex and a touch of sadomasochism, this intense thriller runs for over two breath-taking hours. It is an impeccably paced film of Sapphic desire.

Naomi Bishop (Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn) is a successful senior investment banker on Wall Street. In her late 40s, she lives in a chic apartment and has an occasional lover who works for the same bank in another division. Her work is her life and she is highly professional, even though a recent fiasco has attracted personal comments about what she wore to the presentation and whether she ‘rubbed people up the wrong way’. Sexism is alive and well in the boardrooms of high-powered negotiations, and women have to compete with each other for the few top positions on offer. Naomi’s life is taken up with negotiating an Initial Public Offering for a tech company, assisted by ambitious Erin (Sarah Megan Thomas). When a former classmate Samantha Ryan (Alysia Reiner) makes an appearance as a lawyer investigating insider trading, it takes all Naomi’s strength to keep her head above water.

The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe (M) Directed by Ros Horin

Approximately 90% of female refugees have been subjected to sexual violence and Sydney theatre director Ros Horin asked four women, chosen at random, to tell her their stories. Escaping from different parts of Africa, the women still suffer in the safe haven of Australia. They welcome the chance to turn their experiences into a theatre piece and this wonderful documentary follows the extraordinary journeys of these women as Horin runs workshops and trains them to perform. For some it is a chance to heal but for others it is a huge challenge, and Horin has to find experts to help deal with the trauma that still exists. This crowdfunded film captures the emotional turmoil of the women’s journeys and helps us have a greater understanding. Filmed over a number of years, the process seemed to be a cleansing experience and Horin hopes that it will give the survivors of sexual assault the strength to seek help.

Joe Cinque’s Consolation (MA) Directed by Sotiris Dounoukos

Engineering student Joe Cinque (Jerome Meyer) met law student Anu Singh (Maggie Naouri) at a Canberra pub in 1994. During the 3 years they were together, he detected some neuroses and a touch of hypochondria, but nothing that love couldn’t overcome. Most other people gave Anu a wide berth and her only friend fellow was law student Madhavi Rao (Sacha Joseph). She agreed to help Anu with her plan to arrange a bizarre ‘farewell’ dinner party that involved a suicide pact. The story is based on an actual crime and Helen Garner wrote the novel of the same name after she attended Singh’s trial. This is a brilliantly disturbing debut film for Sotiris Dounoukos who went to the same law school as Singh and co-wrote the script. Don’t miss the Q & A session with the award winning director Sotiris Dounoukos on Sunday 16 October following the 4pm session at Luna Cinemas Leederville. Lezly Herbert

Ever wanted to live in a castle? This striking building in the heart of Maylands contains 25 apartments and one of them has recently come on to the market. This three bedroom, two bathroom home has a delightful portico entrance next two a double carport. Unlike many inner city spaces you don’t have to sacrifice a car, or bathroom privacy to embrace apartment living. The main living space is a combined kitchen, dining and lounge that leads off to a small courtyard space. The home also has a separate powder room toilet, so you don’t have to worry about your dinner guests inspecting your bathroom cabinet. The third bedroom is smaller but it would make a great study or serve well as a guest bedroom for short stay guests. The outstanding feature property is its striking exterior and crisp white interiors.
