CONNECTIONS 11

Happy Pride! Anniversaries are strange things. They creep up on you and before you know it you’ve been in a relationship for a decade, or had the same job five years – as Madonna said “time flies by, so quickly.” While you stop and think about how time has zoomed by, you can also realise that over that period of time so much will have changed. There are lots anniversaries around us this month. Connections Nightclub are ready to celebrate their 40th birthday and Pride WA mark their silver anniversary, 25 years of fostering connectiveness in the LGBTIQ+ community. Thinking back to 1990 when Pride WA was first formed, it was just a few months since homosexuality was decriminalised in Western Australia. But the age of consent for gay men would remain at twenty one for another 12 years alongside a raft discriminatory laws. In times past it was perfectly acceptable to fire people from their jobs because they were gay, it was okay to deny them promotion, or bully them in the workplace. Crimes against gay people could be passed over, assault was common, and HIV was regarded as a death sentence.

Pride marches started as protests, but today they are more about the celebration of diversity, acceptance and inclusion. The Pride Parade is an important rite of passage for many young LGBTIQ+ people and a reminder people in the LGBTIQ community have fought for over many decades, well before Pride WA began. Alongside the party celebrations, take some time to attend some of the other events like Trans Day of Remembrance, the LGBTIQ Human Rights Discussion or the launch of Rodney Croome’s book about marriage equality. Hopefully the world will look remarkably different by the 30th anniversary of Pride WA.

I imagine a young person who joins the Pride parade through Northbridge in 2015 would struggle to appreciate how far we’ve come. And that’s something to celebrate – we’ve travelled so far that our past is almost inconceivable. Looking ahead there are many more battles to fight. Transgender people are still often marginalised within the LGBTIQ community, never mind about the rest of society. Our government is creating the most drawn out path to marriage equality they can manage, and an enormous amount of effort needs to be unleashed in the fight against HIV.

The event will open from 7pm, where guests can peruse the work of contemporary artists Asher Stenning and Lex Randolph, as well as mixed media works from Laura/Remus and Levi Halpern. Slam poet Jesse Oliver, who is due to feature at this year’s National Youth Writers Festival, will be reciting some of his work. Dancers Graeme and Scarlet will light up the stage with a contemporary dance routine, and Zatanna The Enchantress will enchant audiences and show you why she’s just made waves with Chinese and Japanese audiences. The Safe Schools Coalition is an organisation dedicated to promoting awareness and providing support to Australian schools to nurture safe and inclusive environments for same-sex attracted and gender diverse students. Safe Schools was founded in Victoria in 2010 and as a result of the success of the program, was granted federal funding by the Department of Education and Training in 2014, allowing for a national rollout of the organisation.

Senior Project Officer Olivia Knowles says she is excited to continue the momentum here on the west coast.

Safe Schools also encourage schools with diversity groups established by students by providing support.

“We’ve harnessed that momentum and that energy and we’re working with those schools who are engaged and willing to start with,” Knowles says.

“Schools that may already have a diversity group or a gay/ straight alliance… whatever it may be called, we can support schools in supporting those groups,” Knowles told OUTinPerth.

Knowles explains that the program is open to all who are willing to promote inclusivity at their school.

Knowles says that while Safe Schools was specifically established to support same-sex attracted and gender diverse individuals, the programs promotion of harmony and inclusiveness will help all students.

“It’s a mixture of government, independent and Catholic schools – it’s up to the school. Schools may access our services as they require.” One of the services that the Coalition provides is training and professional development for school staff. “It’s important for everyone to have a shared understanding of the needs and experiences of same-sex attracted and gender diverse young people at school,” says Knowles. “It really is driven by the school and we support them with training and resources. It’s not a kind of ’10-step program’ but rather tailored support for each school.”

The Western Australian branch of Safe Schools launched in September this year, with the support of the WA AIDS Council.

As well as education and training programs for staff, Safe Schools offer a plethora of resources online.

SSCWA have accumulated ten member schools in just two months of the programs lifespan, bringing the national tally up to 452.

“We also have a lot of print and digital resources, which are both for staff and students and all of these are free to use.”

“We’re supporting a particular target group that do have very specific needs in schools, but it benefits all students. All students can be targets of gender and sexuality based bullying, whether or not they themselves are LGBTIQ or whether it’s a perceived identity, or a family member – the program makes it safer and more inclusive for everyone.” For more information on Safe Schools Coalition visit: www.safeschoolscoalition.org.au Leigh Hill Photo: stock image

Writer, HIV Advocate, sex worker and co-founder of The Institute of Many (TIM) Nic Holas is coming to Perth to host a community conversation with gay men about PrEP. For the past two years, Nic Holas has been leading discussions about the way we view and explore our ideas and attitudes to HIV. Central to these discussions has been Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP. Whilst community opinions have been varied – even polarised – the science is continuing to support PrEP as an effective biomedical prevention methodology. Small numbers of gay men in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane already have free access to the medication through trials. Out here in the West, with no such trials, gay men can only get PrEP through an off-label prescription, which can then be filled by a local pharmacy (cost about $11,000 -12,000 for a 12 month’s supply) or by privately importing a generic version (cost about $1,300). Following an Operational Directive published by the WA Department of Health in July, government HIV specialists are encouraged to offer PrEP to patients who meet specific guidelines. The Kirby Institute estimate that of around 8,000 homosexually active men in WA, approximately 1,200 would meet these guidelines. However anecdotal evidence suggests that currently there have been less than 20 prescriptions. So, PrEP works, the Department of Health supports and recommends it in appropriate circumstances and gay men want it … so why the fuck isn’t it freely available? And, why are gay men out East agitating and advocating, while we out West stay seemingly quiet? How many new HIV infections happened last month that might have been avoided by PrEP? What about the arguments against PrEP? Will we see a rising tide of STIs as condom use declines? If some gay men forget to wear a condom even when they planned to, why will they remember to take the pill?

To help the community find answers to these and other questions, Nic Holas is hosting a sero-neutral conversation; PrEP: Who Gives a Fuck. Just as important as finding answers, is for voices and opinions in the community to be aired. Nic plans an open and honest dialogue that crucially includes those who are living with HIV as well as those who are HIV negative; sero-neutrality. “We need to keep talking,” says Nic. “I don’t want you to come around to my way of thinking. I just want us to keep talking. Be brave, be yourself, and don’t just tow the party line (whatever school of thought you subscribe to). HIV cannot fall back off the agenda; we owe it to ourselves, to the men who made it through the epidemic, the ones we lost, and the young men just joining us. We need each other, regardless of differences.”

PrEP: Who Gives a Fuck? – a sero-neutral conversation with Nic Holas, Tuesday 24 November 6.30pm – 9pm, Lotteries West House, 2 Delhi Street, West Perth

Not since the fight to get full access to anti-retroviral medicines back in the mid 90’s has there been such an important issue that is directly impacting the rights of all gay and homosexually active men to effective and potentially life-saving treatments. Be there to be sure your voice is heard!

I don’t know when I first went to Connections, it was sometime in the 1990s. My friend Robert took me there, I remember climbing that flight of stairs and entering another world. I remember not knowing what to make of the Drag Queens, it was dark and crowded. I liked the music. It must have been April 24th because ANZAC Day was the next day, I remember the drag queen at the end of the show encouraging people to stay up and go to the dawn service because there must have been gay servicemen who died who might not have grandchildren to remember them – that speech has always stuck with me. Since its doors first opened in 1975 how many people have climbed those recently realigned stairs? How many hundreds of adventures have taken place under those disco balls? How many love stories have had their first spark in that room? In his autobiography ‘Holding the Man’ Timothy Conigrave recounts visiting Connections while he was appearing the play ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’ at His Majesty’s Theatre. Conigrave recalls taking a boy he’d met at the gym to the club who “disappeared with the love of his life”. Conigrave went home with an admirer who’d complimented him at the plays opening night a few days earlier.

A host of luminaries have appeared at the club too, a few years ago I was chatting to Martha Wash who sang on everything from Sylvester’s disco hits, to the Weather Girls ‘It’s Raining Men’ and the ‘90s dance hits of C+C Music Factory and Black Box, she remembered Connections as the place where everyone sat down on the dance floor during the show. The late disco god Sylvester himself played at the club back in the mid 80s, performing over two nights. One night his show was seriously delayed and he took to the stage launching a verbal spray at the club’s management. The show has been remembered as a sensational performance. Boy George has DJ’d at the club several times, as has Jon Pleased Wimmin and the late great Frankie Knuckles. Alongside the world famous DJs a host of long standing dedicated resident DJs have filled the dance floor with their choice selections. Looking back through old copies of The West Observer, Perth’s gay magazine from the ‘80s and ‘90s, reveals the music that was popular in the club at the time. Connections Top 10 of September 1987 includes Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ and Mel and Kim’s ‘Respectable’ alongside The

Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and Laura Branigan. (Surprisingly almost the same playlist from POP! Last Thursday.) At one time the main room had pot plants next to the stage, some people will remember when the club’s shows were audacious productions that ran for 45 minutes, sometimes there’s a giant tree - turning the room into a magical forest, its forever changing. Maybe your favourite drag queen is Tooshie, Audrey Woodstock Rose or Barbie Q, an ever changing rotation of personalities have made us laugh and thrown shade in every direction.

Congratulations to everyone who has been part of Connections 40 year history, so many stories to be shared, so many nights to be remembered. There really is no place like home. Mandurah Q-Life expands services school sparks

The service offers a huge range of services covering requests from people who are looking to meet other people, referrals to doctors and psychologists and also isolated people who just need to have a chat with someone.

Coordinator Bella Broadway said the WA service was catering to a broad range of clients and as a peer based service Q-Life makes sure its volunteers come from all different backgrounds.

A Mandurah school has reportedly told a gay man that his daughter would be expelled if other parents at her school complained about him being gay. The Mandurah Mail’s Nathan Hondros shared the story of Brendan, whose 7 year old daughter attends Foundation Christian College. Hondros reported that the young girl’s father has said that the school has told him that his daughter would not have been accepted into the school if they had been aware that he was gay. Brendan (who has asked that his last name is kept confidential) and his ex-wife were called to the school to discuss their daughter’s behaviour after she mentioned that he father was gay. “I was told that they don’t promote ‘gay’ at the school and [my daughter] was unable to talk about my life between [my partner] and me and general stuff about what a kid talks about with her parents.” The school’s Principal Mr Andrew Newhouse, who is a former political candidate for the Family First party, has defended the school’s policy and denied the family were driven from the school. Mr Newhouse said the parents had not been open with the school when they enrolled their daughter. A petition addressed to WA Education Minister Peter Collier has since launched, calling for schools that discriminate against children with same sex parents to be ineligible for government funding. The petition has accumulated over 20,000 signatures. Mr Collier has said there is no problem with religious schools who discriminate against children with gay relatives receiving tax payer dollars. Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson appeared on radio 6PR’s breakfast program describing the Foundation Christian College’s behaviour as “utterly disgraceful” and “un-Christian”.

Q-Life, the LGBTIQ+ counselling service and suicide prevention initiative has expanded their services. The phone line is now open from 3pm all the way through to midnight, and a web chat service has also been successfully introduced.

The service isn’t just for the LGBTIQ community, they also offer services for family members who might be coming to terms with a relative’s sexuality and for businesses who may have questions about assisting a LGBTIQ community member. Look out for Q-Life’s float in the Pride Parade on November 21st. Find out more at www.QLife.org.au or call 1800 184 527 for the help line.

Equal Love defend transfer of funds Equal Love WA have defended transferring funds donated to their campaign for marriage equality to another activist group who are campaigning against racism.

Mr Wilson said the school was free to insist that staff upheld Christian values but their responsibility to a child was to provide education.

Equal Love has donated $600.00 dollars to the group United Against Bigotry and Racism (UABR) following a request from Equal Love convener Sam Cavallaro who is a member of both activist groups.

Southern River MP Peter Abetz, who was a pastor before entering politics, defended the school’s actions telling Chanel Nine News he believes “it’s perfectly right for a school, Christian school, to maintain the Christian focus.”

Asked if he thought people who donated to marriage equality would approve of their money going to a different cause Cavallaro provided the following statement;

against the racists and fascists of Reclaim Australia, some of whom openly promote Hitler. “This is particularly poignant for members of the LGBTI community as so many of our community perished in Nazi death camps. All LGTBI people should come to the protest against Reclaim Australia on November 22, 11 am behind WA parliament.” Cavallaro said. The convener declined to respond to questions asking if there were conflicts of interest regarding the overlap of organisers between the two groups or whether Equal Love had previously transferred money to other political campaigns.

Russia Plan to jail people for coming out A new proposal put forward by two Russian politicians would see gay men who declare they are gay being locked up for a fortnight. The proposal was put forward as a draft bill by two senior members of the Communist party. Ivan Nikitchuk and Nikolai Arefyev are proposing a fine of up to 5,000 roubles (AUD$112) be given to people who publicly say they are gay. The pair also propose harsher penalties for those who come out in educational institutions or government offices, suggesting that they should serve up to 15 days in police cells. One of the backers of the new law said homosexuality threatened the existence of mankind as it did not lead to reproduction.

Puerto Rico

PR launches inclusive school uniforms Puerto Rico has announced that boys will now be able to wear skirts to school and girls can opt to wear trousers. Education Minister Rafael Roman said the changes were brought in to allow the US territory’s schools to be more LGBTI inclusive and less restrictive. “No student can be sanctioned for not opting to wear a particular piece of clothing … that he or she does not feel comfortable with,” the Minister told reporters. The small island territory expects all students to attend school in uniform but now they will have greater choice. The option is open to all students regardless of their gender and teachers can no longer discipline students for wearing the uniform of their choice.

Vatican City

Priest defrocked for coming out Monsignore Krzysztof Charamsa has been removed from service of the Vatican after he publicly came out as gay in a statement last week. The Polish-born priest’s announcement came the day before Vatican bishops were scheduled to discuss the Church’s position on homosexuality and other topics. Charamsa addressed the media in Rome accompanied by a Spanish man whom he identifies as his boyfriend to challenge the Church’s

15,000 gay couples wed since 2014 Over 15,000 same-sex couples have wed in the United Kingdom since marriage equality was achieved. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed a total of 15,098 couples had legally married since 2014. Of those, 7,366 were marriages while 7,732 were conversions from civil partnerships to marriage. The number of couples opting for civil partnerships fell by 70% between 2013 and 2014 it found. Same-sex marriage became legal just after midnight on 29 March 2014, and people started saying their vows shortly afterwards. Fifty five percent of couples tying the knot were female, a notable figure as most of the time more men undertook civil unions, which were introduced in 2005.

New York to host WorldPride It has been revealed that New York City will host the 2019 WorldPride event to commemorate 50 years since the revolutionary Stonewall riots. The global event, which debuted in Rome back in 2000, was founded by Paul Stenson of InterPride to celebrate LGBT pride, awareness and visibility on an international scale. The event has also been held in Jerusalem (2004), London (2012) and Toronto (2014). The 1969 Stonewall riots are widely regarded as the major catalyst for the modern LGBT rights movement, when LGBT protestors stood up and fought against police aggression and discrimination. In 1970, US streets saw the birth of a cultural icon as LGBT people marked the anniversary of the riots in the first Pride marches.

“That’s my message to anyone in this town who thinks ‘I’ve got to stay in the closet to be successful in films’ – I didn’t. Do you want to be a famous movie star who has love scenes with ladies and in private be an unhappy gay? There’s no choice. Forget the career, dear. Go and do something else… A closet’s a really nasty place to live, you know? It’s dirty, it’s dusty, it’s full of skeletons. You don’t want it. Open that door – fling it wide and be yourself.” Sir Ian McKellen on being out in Hollywood

“Coming out is a very personal thing, so you do it your way, whatever way that is, in your own time. Just remember it’s good to talk… talk to your friends, talk to your parents, talk to your busted up ‘90s Space Jam VHS. Most importantly never ever be ashamed of who you are, because who you are is fucking awesome, don’t let anybody make you think differently.” Years & Years’ Olly Alexander on coming out

“I want to be a figure in the gay community, who speaks for gay men. I sell records in countries where gay men get killed and that’s a big thing for me, because maybe one person in that country will pick up my album, realise it’s by a gay artist, and it might change their opinion.” Sam Smith on being part of the LGBTIQ+ community

culture The story follows Diana Goodman, an adoring wife and doting mother whose dream is for a picture-perfect family. The Goodman’s seemingly rudimentary suburban existence is exposed as something more from the get-go, as Diana struggles to cope with her long-standing Bipolar disorder. Michael Cormick, who plays Diana’s psychiatrist in the play, spoke to OUTinPerth about the message of the show. “I think it’s a really interesting piece,” Cormick says, “It’s an amazing piece about a woman with Bipolar and her struggles and her life getting through it.” Cormick, a seasoned veteran of the Australian and international stage, says that the play’s message was a major part of the reason he took the role. While taking a light-hearted approach to mental health, the show encourages an awareness of how mental health issues can affect anyone – even if they appear next to normal. Cormick attributes the accessibility of what could be heavyhanded and purely educational information to the show’s music and lyrics. Well versed in cabaret and classical theatre as well as contemporary, Cormick says there’s a certain modern rock element to ‘Next To Normal’ that complements the lyrics and helps ground the message in today’s world. “The music is fantastic, he says, “It’s a beautiful score and everyone has a really good sing in it. I think if we can bring an awareness that’s musical and attractive to people to hear, that helps. It’s an emotional journey, and a really poignant and beautiful one. It’s sad, but full of hope.” Though ‘Next To Normal’ does take a light touch at first, the dire effects of mental health issues is front and centre throughout the two act piece – much as Jonathan Larson’s portrayed the effects of HIV/AIDS in his now infamous ‘Rent’. “I think it’s absolutely imperative that we discuss mental health in a way that’s not sugar-coated because it’s a real problem in society and in our lives,” Cormick says, “It doesn’t just affect those we love, it affects everybody.” ‘Next To Normal’ reminds audiences that mental health ailments may be well hidden, but they affect almost all of us, not just those we love.

Black Swan State Theatre Company are bringing Brian Yorkey’s critically acclaimed Broadway musical ‘Next To Normal’ to Perth this month the very first time.

“We should have some sort of normality about it, and that’s why the title ‘Next To Normal’ is perfect,” says Cormick, “Rather than sugar-coat it or make it out to be an isolated, freaky way of living – we need to be aware of it and know that it can be dealt with.” Next To Normal will be at the Heath Ledger Theatre from November 7th – 22nd. Scattered around the apartment are her artworks, creatively decorated mannequins and musical instruments– each one telling a different story. Jayne tells us how her creative practice began; “When I was 21 I had ovarian cancer, when I was 46 I had brain cancer and had my left frontal lobe removed, and then I got breast cancer two years later.” The artist’s tough times didn’t end there, a few years later her partner passed away; “I sat here in a black hole” Jayne said. When she did venture out, she found a home away from home in Perth’s LGBTIQ club Connections. Jayne explains that a side effect of her medical treatment is that she now only sleeps a few hours

Olympic diving champion come cabaret star Matthew Mitcham is bringing his critically acclaimed stage show back for PrideWA’s 2015 celebrations. ‘Twists and Turns’ staged its world premiere at Perth’s Fringe World festival back in 2014. Just one year later, Mitcham has toured the country and is bringing his ukulele back to WA for another highly demanded encore. Mitcham reflected with OUTinPerth earlier on his first performance and how the show has grown. “My God, I was terrified!” he said, “Before that first show I was sitting back stage, literally

two minutes before pushing through the curtain absolutely terrified. After the show I was sitting back stage freaking out and trying to keep a lid on it, and my musical director came up to me and said to me ‘Before the show you were so calm, cool and collected.’ And I thought, ‘if only you knew.’” Mitcham attributes the shows longevity to its adaptability, as he aims to make each show a little different. Based on his autobiography, the show gives audiences a little slice of the diver’s life. “It changes every night, sometimes I’ll try out new jokes on purpose, sometimes they just kind

Graham Lovelock – PrideWA

DJ Cinnamon Mark Reid – WA Aids Council I remember the very first parade (which was really more of a protest march than a parade) but this real sense of community and family that permeated everyone who took part. There was such a sense of joy and that as a community we were getting together to make some noise, be colourful and celebrate the diversity and wonder that is our community. It was in those heady days when we were all being affected by HIV as well so there was a somber part to taking part as well but it was the overwhelming feel of community that shone through.

My most M-rated memory of Pride would have to be the 2002 dance-off between rival silly friend gangs. My group of friends, who called themselves ‘Team Messy’ and wore their skull hand screen printed t-shirts for their scheduled danceoff to Missy Elliott’s ‘4 My People’ at 3am in the alternative room against another group of friends, ‘Northbridge Massive’. It was also the first Pride I ever DJ’d at. The 3am dance-off was hilarious, with both groups lined up against each other in their dueling t-shirts. Team Messy took out the honours with their carefully choreographed routine.

DJ Timbee My earliest memory was the mid-year pride parties called ‘Exes’. I was an 18-year-old twink and I lived for the DJs and the lights. Pride used to be the place we all hung out before the online space took over and community was able to be created in multiple other forms.

Being a long-term member and having a partner who is one of the original members of Pride WA, it’s been interesting watching the organisation go through various stages of success and challenge over the last few decades. The most rewarding aspect for me however has been working with a great bunch of people over the last 4 years to re-build the organisation, re-establish a connection with the LGBTI community and other community groups in WA and see the development of Pride WA in its 25th year as a legitimate arts, cultural and community group. It’s not been easy at times but Pride WA finally seems to be entering a new and exciting stage of its history.

PrideWA are celebrating their silver anniversary this year, marking 25 years of Pride here in Western Australia. OUTinPerth asked members of the community to share their treasured memories and reflect on just how proud we are. Bree Maddox – The Court Hotel

My craziest memory of Pride was out Street Party in 2012. We must have tempted fate by having a Full Moon party as a humid week turned into a tropical thunderstorm come Pride night. We did as much as we could to provide cover but the heavens opened and it poured! I remember being soaking wet and completely exhausted after being on my feet all day and night and then dealing with a horrible car accident that happened outside of out event but then I looked up and saw all these people dancing in the rain as Wynter Gordon performed on the main stage. Seeing those people refusing to let the rain dampen their spirits and having an absolute ball made my night. Of course the next day during pack down the sun shone brightly and we all got sunburnt…

Graham Douglas-Meyer – Open Arms Fellowship My most exciting memory of Pride was in 1994. It was my first Pride ever. I had come out only a couple of months before. I was the only openly gay student at Notre Dame University in Fremantle. Fairday at Perry Lakes was so much fun and my first experience of being able to be myself. It was all capped off with the Pride Parade that I helped to marshal. I met people that I hadn’t met since high school; one of them a 7 foot Snow White. It was the first time in my 31 years on this planet that I felt I could be honest about myself, I felt I belonged and I wasn’t in Kansas anymore!

“I’ve seen the Pride parade lots of times, but I’ve never participated before.” Mr McGowan said. By taking up a spot alongside is parliamentary colleagues Mr McGowan is set to become the major party Labor leader to take part in the annual celebration. Mr McGowan said his reason for joining in is a simple one, he just wants to show the community his support. “When I’ve watched it before I’ve noticed everyone’s pretty exuberant and dancing! I’m not sure if I’ll be dancing – but it’ll be good.” Mr McGowan said

When the Pride parade works its way down William Street on Saturday November 21st Labor leader Mark McGowan will be seeing the parade from a new perspective. Having watched the parade for many years this year McGowan will be in it.

LGBTIQ issues have been making the news in state politics in recent months with the parliament discussing the issue of marriage equality and concerns being raised over a Madurah school that suggested a 7 year old girl shouldn’t speak about her father because he is gay. Mr McGowan said the action of the Foundation Christian College were disappointing; “I don’t think a child and a family should be treated that way. I don’t think that’s a very Australian thing to do. Regardless of your religious beliefs are on gay people or gay marriage, I don’t think the majority of Australia would consider that to pass the fairness test.”

Last month the Labor leader spoke in parliament voicing his support for marriage equality. Maylands MLA Lisa Baker put forward a motion calling for the state’s lower house to voice their support for marriage equality and state that the proposed marriage plebiscite did not have community support. In the chamber McGowan said that he hoped society had changed its attitude about homosexuality since he was a youth. After some political maneuvering the motion was amended to show support for a free vote over a plebiscite – without voicing support for marriage equality. McGowan said he was disappointed that the Liberal members shied away from the marriage debate. “It was important for WA to make a statement, the other part was of the motion was to a statement about marriage equality but the Liberals and Nationals insisted on that being deleted. They didn’t want to make that statement, they just wanted to make a statement about the plebiscite.” “I think if a plebiscite was held marriage equality would win, but I think it would be a divisive and unhappy event for the country. Especially for gay and lesbian people who would be subject to some pretty awful commentary from people. So it’s best to avoid that.” Mr McGowan said what is clear about the plebiscite plan is that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had to make some deals to get his job. “What’s clear is Malcolm Turnbull gave in on this issue to the right wing of the Liberal party as a condition on getting the Prime Minister job… that is a compromise that he made and people should judge him on that.” Mr McGowan said. Mr McGowan argued that if the coalition insist on the issue be resolved through a plebiscite then it should just be a straight forward question asking people if they support marriage equality. Magda Szubanski has become a well-loved public figure over the course of her decades-long career in comedy, winning hearts for her performances as Esme Hoggett in the all-time porcine classic Babe, the often tragic yet consistently delightful Sharon Strzelecki in Kath and Kim, and countless others. With the release of her memoir Reckoning, she reveals a previously unseen side of herself, delving deep into her own family history and how grief and war impacted on their lives and in turn shaped the person she is today. As I spoke to Szubanski she was taking a brief break from “driving through the guts of Tasmania” to the next location of her book tour. Having pulled over in a spot with adequate phone reception and a view of a lake teeming with swans, she reflected on the process of writing her memoir. “It kind of poured out of me, to be honest. Some bits were more difficult to write than others, but a lot of it just sort of flowed onto the page. The original manuscript was enormous, it was 851 pages, because there was a lot of story to tell and there were lots of elements in it and I wanted to get everything out and then sift through and find what I wanted to keep in it.”

me as well, to be honest. Those early days of realizing I was gay and what that meant and that isolation. That was a bit hard to revisit… I wish I could’ve known then what I know now.”

As well as shedding light on Szubanski’s formative years, Reckoning also examines the life of her father, Zbigniew, who lived in Warsaw during the Second World War and as a teenager was recruited into a top-secret execution squad as part of the Polish resistance against the Nazis. Magda said this was one of the most difficult topics to cover in the book. “Writing stuff about my father killing people, to be honest, that was really hard. And doing the research I had to do about the war and the Holocaust, because I did a lot of reading about that to make sure I had a breadth of understanding about it… Some of that was harrowing.”

In her book, Szubanski also reflected on the positive response she had after she came out to the Australian public on The Project in 2012. “I have to say that the community’s been fantastic to me. It’s been really great and I’ve absolutely loved the interaction… It’s been amazing, how many people when they’ve come on this book tour have come up to me and talked about their journeys, and a lot of older gay people, like in their 50s and 60s and older, saying they’ve just come out and the journey they’ve been on. There’s people of all ages. Often the focus is on youth but there’s a lot of older people who’ve really suffered from discrimination early on and still haven’t quite gotten over that. So we have to be a bit gentle and kind on ourselves, I think.”

Szubanski also wrote extensively about some difficult moments in her own personal history, including her experience with depression as a teenager. “That churned up some stuff for

Her hope is that by sharing her own experiences she’ll be able to help other LGBT people and their families. “A lot of straight people and a lot of parents are reading the book and they’re getting it. When I talk about that thing of an LGBTQI child being a minority of one within the family, suddenly they go ‘Oh my god, I get it now’. They are on their own, figuring it out with no one to show them to the ropes. “That’s the importance of community, you know. That’s why I’m the patron of Twenty10, which is an LGBTQI youth support group. Because I think that that isolation needs to be broken down” Szubanski said.

Troye Sivan is a global phenomenon. He’s appeared in feature films including ‘Wolverine’ and the ‘Spud’ trilogy of movies and he’s launched a successful music career. Last year Sivan’s first EP ‘Trxye’ topped the charts around the world and now he’s back with second set of tunes with his ‘Wild’ EP. Three of the songs of the album are being presented in a series of videos named ‘The Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy’. He’s got over a 3.5 million followers on his YouTube channel where he makes weekly videos. A few years ago he told his followers that he is gay, and they embraced his announcement. In 2014 Time magazine named him one of the most influential young people on the planet. When Sivan is not jet-setting around the globe, he lives in Perth’s northern suburbs with his family. OUTinPerth traded emails with Sivan to find out about his latest music. The artwork for both your CD covers obscures your face, early in their careers most artists are trying to get ‘their face out there’. What was the thinking behind this approach? I think I already put my face out there so much, I didn’t want the music to be at all about my mug! The thought of my face plastered on the cover of this music just made me a

little uncomfortable. I’m sure I’ll come around to the idea at some point. The lyrics for the songs on ‘Wild’ often seem to focus on personal thoughts and document feelings of frustration. What did you draw upon during the writing sessions for these songs? The music is, a lot of the time, my inner monologue. I can write about the darkest and most messed up part of my mind that I’d be hesitant to even acknowledge elsewhere. Your track ‘Bite’ is about your first time in an LGBT club – can you share which club it was? Was your first time in a gay club what you expected it to be? It was actually in South Africa! I was 17, and it was suuuuper grimey. I was petrified, curious and drunk, and I had the night of my life. We’ve seen the first two videos in the Blue Neighbourhood trilogy with ‘Wild’ and ‘Fools’, it’s refreshing to see a same sex relationship depicted on screen. Do you feel a responsibility to address issues like sexuality, domestic violence and alcoholism? I do feel a responsibility, but just to be honest - I wasn’t trying to make a statement by putting a boy in the videos or anything, that’s just my truth. I’m lucky enough to live in a time where an LGBTQ singer can do that.

What’s your least favourite part of the process of making music? Bad song writing days. They really get me down. What was it like working with Tkay Maidza and Broods? So dope! They are both so insanely talented, and added so much to ‘Wild’. I’m so honoured they were down to be on it. You’ve developed a huge online following, what would you say to a young guy making videos for YouTube that only had 20 followers? I would say do it because you love it! It might not going to explode overnight, but if you love it, that’s okay! Enjoy the process.

Perth’s annual Pride Festival is coming up, as a young man who had recently come out, what did you feel when you joined in the parade in years gone by? I remember pride days as really emotional days for me. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like I belonged more. I’m also lucky to have a very supportive family who comes with me every year. You expressed your excitement about marriage equality in the USA, how do you feel about the current situation in Australia? It’s embarrassing that it hasn’t happened yet, but it will. It’s just a matter of time - we have to keep fighting. Troye’s EP ‘Wild’ is available now and he’ll be playing an all ages live show at The Astor Theatre on November 15th. Troye’s album ‘Blue Neighbourhood’ will be out on December 4th. Graeme Watson

music He’s a record breaker. Smith broke not one, but two records this year when he recorded the first ever male vocals for a ‘Bond’ theme. Smith’s song for the upcoming ‘Spectre’ earned him his second place in ‘Guinness World Records’ when it became the first Bond theme to top the UK charts. He was also honoured for lasting the most consecutive weeks in the UK Top 10 for his debut album, ‘In The Lonely Hour’.

Wants to be a strong voice for the LGBTIQ+ community. Smith garnered a lot of media attention last year, when he said he wasn’t trying to be a spokesperson for the queer community. Only 22, Smith had only just come out as gay and admitted he wanted to focus on his music and writing. Sam’s view has shifted since then, this year announcing he hopes to be an international voice for gay youth – declaring he plans to set up a foundation to support LGBT youth.

The boy knows how to work a ballad. We all know by now that Smith is not here to churn out dancefloor bangers. His career-defining collaboration with Disclosure on ‘Latch’ certainly proved he is capable, though his solo music is certainly more solemn. The release of his latest ballad ‘Drowning Shadows’ saw the Twitterverse flooded with crying emoji as the single broke hearts across the globe.

His cousins are Lily and Alfie Allen. Well, third cousins – but hey, we think having Sheezus and Theon Greyjoy in your family tree is something worth bragging about.

He wants to kiss more boys!

Sam Smith and his honeyed vocals are heading back to Perth this November for an arena performance to remember. At just 23, the young Briton has the music world swooning to his every verse, taking the international charts by storm. In the lead up to his Perth show, we take a look at all the reasons we want to stay with Sam Smith.

Just prior to the release of ‘Drowning Shadows’, Smith announced he is planning to take a sabbatical from making music so that he can live life and experience more. Smith says he’ll have to kiss a few more boys before he can write more songs. Perhaps he’ll find some inspiration here in Perth, who knows, we could all be crying at our computers again this time next year.

Sam Smith will be performing at Perth Arena on Saturday 28th November. Tickets available from Ticketek.com.au Leigh Hill

SARAH BLASKO’S

NEW FOUND SOUND Sarah Blasko’s new album ‘Eternal Return’ is her best work yet, a folktronic sensation that demands repeated listening.

For Blasko, recording an album involves escaping from her regular surroundings and encapsulating herself in a different environment.

was bit nostalgic, but there is a blurring of where it’s from. Mostly I wanted to make a really tight pop record.” Blasko said.

Her previous albums had been recorded in far flung locations including Hollywood, Sweden and New Zealand, but for her fifth record the she stayed in Australia working with former Gerling member Burke Reid. While she didn’t head overseas, Blasko said she still followed the same process.

The album is full of love songs. Asked if you have to be in love to write love songs, Blasko said for her it was essential. “I think so, it depends what kind of love song I guess. If it’s a song where you’re imagining that you’re someone else you don’t have to experience it, but I think the best things come from experience, but maybe that’s the kind of writer I am… I write from where I’m at.” Blasko said.

“We were staying in a residential studio, so you still had to go there and immerse yourself in the whole experience. I enjoy doing that with each album. In the past it’s been exciting to think ‘where can I go?’, ‘Who can I do this with?’ I think it kind of makes you step up to what you’re doing and push yourself forward, throwing yourself into at times kind of uncomfortable situations.” Staying closer to home allowed Blasko to record the album in small chunks rather than tackling a whole record in one large session. “We’d record for five days and then come back three weeks later and do some more.” Blasko said, “Having a little bit more time gives you a different perspective.” Blasko describes her producer as one of the most open minded and enthusiastic people she’s worked with. “Burke’s a very enthusiastic person, and I’ve never worked with anyone who has that much energy, constant energy, in

Blasko said the distinctively different sound on her new record is a bit of a jump from her last record but she hopes it something her fans will embrace.

the studio. He works like demon and we ended up recording to three in the morning, even though we would have started at eleven o’clock in the morning.” Blasko said. The record has been described as having ‘80s vibe, something that Blasko attributes to the synthesizers used throughout the recording but she hesitates calling it an ‘80s record. “I don’t think the production values sounds very ‘80s or the drums, they’re really dry and tight and lot of ‘80s drums and roomy and full of reverb, but I wanted to make an album that

“In a lot of ways I see it as having links to my first record.” Blasko said sharing that she’s eager for the record to be released, “I just want it to be out there so people can start to take it in.” Head to page 51 to read our review of ‘Eternal Return’. lyrics, I always try to concentrate more on the music but end up focusing on the lyrics. I think on this record there is more of a balance.” Grant said. Grant notes that sometimes lyrics seem to take a back seat in the current music scene, but for him having something to say is an essential ingredient.

John Grant made himself a challenge, he set himself a deadline and promised himself he’d finish his record by a certain date. “It was challenging”, Grant told OUTinPerth, the singer explaining that he’s not good with deadlines and he could never envisage putting out material that he wasn’t completely satisfied with. The result is ‘Grey Tickles, Black Pressure’ an album that has racked up critical acclaim upon its release. For his third solo album the former lead singer of alternative rock band The Czars returned to Austin, Texas where he recorded his first solo record. Grant who fronted the band on six albums through the ‘90s and early ‘00s has had a surprisingly interesting solo career matched with revelations about his personal life. His first solo album ‘Queen of Denmark’ was recorded with the members of Midlake and detailed his challenges with drug addiction and coming to terms with his sexuality. For his second record ‘Pale Green Ghosts’ Grant moved to Iceland, where he continues to live, working with electronic musicians. On that album he revealed that he was living with HIV. Now on his third album Grant continues his musical explorations with a collection of songs that makes challenging listening; a mix of operatic vocals, dark electronica and strange sounds. Grant said although his music is sounding different the song writing process hasn’t really changed. “It’s always about lyrics and sounds, or more lyrics and chords. I do write differently in that sometimes now I start with a computer and I start with sounds and beats and synth basslines. “I go back and forth, between sitting at a piano playing chords to starting off with the beats. For me it’s very much about the

“I do believe people are concentrating more on style rather than content.” Grant said, “Maybe people feel there’s nothing left to say, but we’re all individuals and as individuals we’re all having a unique experience that nobody else is having.” For the video for the single ‘Disappointing’ Grant is filmed in a very homosexual setting – a gay sauna. Grant said the visual treatment is something the director came up with but it was one he really liked.

Grant said often he feels our expectations of partners and relationships are set too high. “People have lists, fucking lists, of where they want the person to be from, and what they want them to have, what they want them to look like, what their body hair should be, what the hair pattern needs to be. What their facial features should be like, they’re supposed to have the exact dick and the exact ass, legs, and the right amount of hair on their legs, and they know what that person should do for a living. “The truth is the person who is going to knock you off your feet – you have no idea what they’re going to look like. They could totally not be your type – if we could just allow ourselves to know that this thing called love, it’s not about having the perfect anal sex, and it’s not getting the perfect right sized dick in your ass.”

Sex isn’t always about getting an orgasm. There’s this thing called intimacy that is getting increasingly difficult in this world “I liked the idea of it, because the song works on so many levels, I’m basically talking about objects and people in the world, I’m not really talking about sex but there’s a lot of temptation in the world. There’s a lot of really hot men out there! “There are a lot of really interesting and fun people to connect with, but there is something really rewarding about having a relationship with one person and developing that. Learning how to be intimate with them and developing that over a long time. Continuing to show up to that.” Grant said relationships are difficult, but ultimately rewarding. The singer said he certainly wasn’t preaching to anyone, describing himself as the guy who has done everything wrong. “I’m the guy who has fucked his way through a mountain of people and got HIV and had no idea how to do anything. I don’t know how to cook, I never learned to do anything. I just totally didn’t fit in and wasn’t good at relationships.” Grant said. “I do feel like there’s a big thing these days for just completely casting aside whatever is no longer fun in the moment, and ‘whatever is keeping whatever vision of myself afloat, I’m going to stick to that’, but anything that becomes uncomfortable I’m going to just get rid of.” Grant said.

Grant argues that modern life doesn’t foster intimacy. “Sex isn’t always about getting an orgasm. There’s this thing called intimacy that is getting increasingly difficult in this world where the attention span is whittled down to zero. Intimacy is something that you work at over a period of time. It’s a very skittish creature.” Grant said. Grant said he didn’t believe the challenge of developing intimacy was specifically lost within the gay community, but men are more attracted to hedonistic part of sex. Grant said for gay men of his age having to learn about romance is not unusual. “We were told that we couldn’t have all the other stuff, we couldn’t have romance, the house and the courtship and all that because it was hidden. Younger people have access to that, they can go to the movies and hold hands, they can have a date, and they can meet someone when they’re younger. We didn’t have that.” Grant said. ‘Grey Tickles, Black Pressure’ is out now. Graeme Watson

Tina Arena’s

NEW DIRECTION

Tina Arena fans had to wait a long time for her last album. ‘Reset’ ended an eleven year hiatus of fresh material from the popular singer. This time Arena wasn’t going to let her fans wait so long. Hot on the heels of the top selling album comes another, this one’s titled ‘Eleven’.

“You can’t keep people waiting another three or four years, that’s stupid - the world doesn’t work that way.” Arena said chatting on the phone from her Parisian home. The singer along side her partner Vincent Mancini and their son Gabriel has spent the last few years living half the year in France and the rest of their time in Melbourne. The family plan to move permanently to Australia when Gabriel’s ready for high school. Despite having a whole album of new material ready to deliver Arena said she didn’t feel a lot of pressure to quickly follow up the platinum selling ‘Reset’. Her goal heading into the recording sessions was to make a great record, what she describes as a ‘turning point’ record. “I just wanted to make a record with people who I really like in fun conditions and that’s what it really was.’ Arena said. Eleven’ was recorded around the world including sessions in Sweden, Paris, London, Sydney and Melbourne, and like her previous album Arena has collaborated with a mix of songwriters and producers. Amongst her collaborators was Anders Wollbeck and Mattias Lindblom who contributed to her last record and songwriter Hayley Warner returns as well, but there’s also new collaborations with Evermore’s John Hume and singersongwriter Kate Miller-Heidke. The record has a more electronic and theatrical sound than Arena’s previous albums which have normally fallen into the adult contemporary category. Arena said she was pleased to have done some experimentation in the studio. “It’s nice to create songs where they create a visual image and you can imagine a story.” Arena said.

To promote the album Arena has decided to make a series of short films rather than the traditional music video. The clip for the first single ‘I Want to Love You’ saw Arena appearing alongside actor Vince Colosimo. “Traditional videos just need to change again.” Arena said noting that the way we watch music videos has changed, “There still there, but you have to go online to see them now, and they don’t pop up on TV. I grew up with ‘Sounds’, ‘Countdown’ and ‘Rage’, where Saturday mornings or Friday night – where you’d come home and watch videos as you went to sleep.” “It’s all become very complicated” Arena said. A longing for simpler times is something Arena sings about on the album. On the upbeat track ‘Overload’ she sings ‘I’ve been lighting a match since 1980’ and she said there are many things she misses from decades gone by. “I absolutely without a doubt miss simpler times, things were less complicated back then.” Arena laughs. While many artists don’t acknowledge some of their earlier work, Arena has come to embrace all of her past. On her Reset tour she dived into a spirited performance of her first single, the HiNRG ‘I Need Your Body’ and the title of the new album ‘Eleven’ marks her eleventh album. Her first was ‘Tiny Tina and Little John’ in 1977, a collaboration with her Young Talent Time co-star John Bowles.

“The number eleven surrounds me, I tend to look at the clock and there’s always the number eleven poking in and around, it’s symbolic, I’m also the first of the eleventh – it’s my birthday. There’s a lot of ones in my life, so I though what the heck, maybe this is what it’s meant to be – plus it sounds good.” Arena said. As Arena gives a nod to her career’s longevity by acknowledging her journey through albums one to eleven, the Australian music industry has announced it’s going to bestow their highest honour, Arena is to be inducted into ARIA’s Hall of Fame. “I’m glad people remember and love those early albums,” Arena said, “At this stage I’m just so grateful that people are still listening.” Arena said, adamant that she’ll never take her passionate fans for granted. ‘Eleven’ is out now. Tina Arena will be playing for one night only at the Perth Concert Hall on Friday 26th February 2016. Graeme Watson

As an electronic icon, adored by the gay community, you must interact with a lot of drag queens – what do you look for in a queen? Do you have a favourite? Oh my god! I love drag queen humour. They make me laugh so much. Just being around them is always so much fun. From the serious high end queens who could pass in the Folies Bergère to the bougie drag in San Francisco they all are unique. I just love them. I could never say I have a favourite because those bitches will cut you! Seriously, I love them all but Courtney Act is a friend of mine. I think what they do is art. Your collaboration with Will Sparks (Sick Like That) is a certified banger – what drew you to collaborate with the breakout Aussie DJ?

What’s been happening in Luciana’s world since we spoke last year? Bloody hell, where do I start? I think my most exciting news is that we won best progressive house track at the WMC in Miami for Arcadia. I co-hosted the awards so it was an extra treat. I also have got a bit of momentum going with my DJ-ing. I kept getting asked if I could add a DJ set to my performance because those who knew me knew I used to do a bit of DJ-ing in London, so I’m quite excited about that. I have been working very closely with KSHMR (Niles from the Cataracs) so expect some fun collabs there. There’s lots more boring stuff like I tiled my utility room floor but I’m sure you don’t want to know about that.

To be honest, I hear so many tracks from people who want me to write with them. If the track is good and makes me want to dance then we are on to something. As soon as I heard the beat for ‘Sick Like That’ - I was hooked. Will came round the house and played the track - we literally wrote that track in about 30 minutes. A record time for me! I just love it so much. What’s next for Luciana in 2015? I want to pursue my DJ-ing. After so many years of just performing my tracks, it’s great to get to party longer with my fans and share the music I love myself. I’m going to continue working with other DJ producers if the track is right. Who knows? But I’m so happy about getting to come to Australia again. You just don’t know what’s around the corner!

You’re coming to Perth to help us celebrate Pride – what does Pride mean to you? I think Pride for me is about looking back. Seeing how far we have come and how much more we can do for equality. It’s a time to reflect on all those who didn’t make it to where we are today. I feel the younger generation would benefit from knowing their history because so many gave so much just so we can stand up and say ‘I am what I am!’ Of course, it’s a time to believe in yourself and show the world who you are. It’s not all about getting drunk and wasted (even though we love to). Let’s get some politics back into Pride!

Can we expect to see even more of Luciana in Australia? Can we convince you to stay for the summer? Yes, you can. I love it here. There are so many things that are homely for me in Australia. As well as having family here, there are little things like fish and chips and pie and mash that makes me happy. The track with Will Sparks has seen a reach with a new audience here, so I’m so lucky to get the chance to come over. I think I just convinced myself!

Last time you were here, you turned the party in an outfit made of straws! How are you going to top that?

Luciana will be at The Court Hotel’s Neon Street Party on Saturday 21st November

I don’t think I could ever top that one. What an amazing creation by Jeffrey Bryant. It’s just been selected for a fashion exhibition in Paris. I was so excited to hear but I was like... wait, does that mean I have to give it back? So yes, she’s off to Paris without me.

Jean-Michel Jarre Electronica 1: The Time Machine Jean-Michel Jarre brought out some ground breaking electronic music in the late ‘70s, his ‘Oxygene’ album is a classic, but his later albums were less revered. Now he’s teamed up with an eclectic mix of artists for a collaborative project. Working with Massive Attack’s 3D brings a track filled with strings and muted vocals. ‘Glory’ sees him work with M83, a move that brings out the best in both artists, teaming up with Tangerine Dream results in a great tune. ‘Automoatic’ created with Erasure’s Vince Clarke is another highlight. Other tracks include Air, Armin Van Buuren, Laurie Anderson, Boys Noise, Pete Townsend, and Moby.

Nathaniel Yours

Sarah Blasko Eternal Return

Nathaniel may not have won the X-Factor back in 2012, but has certainly got a distinctive voice. Hits ‘Live Louder’, ‘You’ and ‘You’re Beautiful’ are the album’s highlights. The Jackson-like dance vibe continues on album opener ‘Animals’, ‘Addicted’ and the ‘90s tinged ‘Flava’. As the album progresses the quality drops off with drawn-out ballad ‘Always Be Yours’ while ‘Bedroom’ sounds like a lost Craig David tune. There’s a country version of ‘You Drive Me Crazy’ – which Dolly Parton should take some blame for, and an atrocious rock take on Terrence Trent D’Arby’s ‘Sign Your Name’.

On her fifth album Sarah Blasko delivers a dramatic and intensive collection of tunes that take her in a fresh musical direction. It’s an album that should bring her a new legion of fans and admirers. The record kicks off with the powerful ‘I Am Ready’ a tune that builds anticipation for what’s to come. ‘I Want to Be Your Man’ is filled with crisp synthesizers. ‘Better With You’ has some swirling and magical sounds as Blasko sings about how everything in life is better when you’re in love. This albums cleverly taps into a pop sound of days gone by, while sounding totally fresh for today.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – Marmaelade March local tune of the first standard Ludovico Einaudi – Night chilled out beauty from the Italian maestro’s new collection ‘Elements’ Kelela – Rewind spooky electronic sounds with crisp vocals reminiscent of ‘80s Janet Jackson Dimaro Azari – Victim the best track to vogue to this month, the man behind Azari and III goes solo and gets into the groove Janet Jackson featuring Missy Elliot – Burn It Up the best of both artists in this killer track, seriously funky sounds Junior Boys – Big Black Coat a new intense sound for the boys, point us to the nearest rave Bjork – Lion Song Bjork reworks her last album with added strings because some lush strings improve everything, except that new Elvis record – stay clear of that. Floating Points – Silhouettes I,II & III epic electronica, destined to be regarded as a classic Savages – The Answer the post punk band from London return with a thumping tune Panda Bear – Swallow at the Hollow Panda Bear dropped a massive mix of music onto Soundcloud for Halloween Le1f - Rage his debut album is so close, in the meantime here’s a new track that goes from melodic to destructive Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm – Three time to meditate and relax with the sound of an excited refrigerator Leah Senior – How I Miss the Womb rollicking folky sweetness Georgi Kay – God of a Girl Georgi returns with a dark electronic sound

Hurts Surrender Hurts have always come across as more style than substance and here on their third album they don’t have any surprises up their welltailored sleeves. They really should put in to be Britain’s Eurovision entry for 2016 because that’s where these kind of bombastic overwrought and overblown EDM tunes excel. Almost all the songs sound the same, except ‘Wish’ a piano based ballad stands out as something a little different. Rather than listening to Hurts, why not just grab an album by Bronski Beat, Heaven 17 or Ultravox, which is what it sounds like their desperately trying to emulate.

Milly

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell So Familiar Steve Martin in recent years seems to have turned his back on acting and comedy and embraced a new career as a banjo player. He’s even picked up a Grammy for one of his records. This is second collaborative album with vocalist Edie Brickell. This an album that warrants repeated listening, one where the lyrics have meanings and tells stories. Unashamedly a Bluegrass Country album, Martin offers less vocals than on the pair’s previous album. ‘Another Round’ is a great hoe-down drinking tune, ‘Mine All Mine’ is a cute love song and ‘Heartbreaker’ will make your heart swell.

Valerie – Mark Ronson

2. I’m Every Woman / Respect (Eric Kupper Club Mix) - Aretha Franklin 3. Things You Do To Me – Killer Funk Disco Allstars 4. The Same Old Scene (Joey Megro Disco Scene Mix) – Roxy Music 5. Electronic musician Banoffee aka Martha Brown has quickly gained a lot of respect in the electronic music world. Over the last year the musician has released a couple of high quality tracks that showcase her love of slick electronic sounds. ‘Do I Make You Nervous’ is her latest EP Banoffee explains the meaning behind the title. “That’s a line from my track ‘I’m Not Sorry’ which is about a lot of different things, but there’s a bit at the start. I started getting quite obsessed with this idea. I started to realise that when I’d speak I’d begin by apologising. “It’s something you see a lot of women do, a lot of men do it too, but there’s something in my female community where I see woman making an apology for even taking up space. “You walk into a room and say “Sorry guys, I’m just doing this…” or I’d put up my hand to ask a question in class and say “Sorry, but” and then begin my question. “So the beginning of the song ‘I’m not sorry’ is about the fact that we’ve learned to apologise for taking up space in the world. We’ve learned to apologies for having a question or verbalising anything that comes into our head. “For me I was saying – I’m not going to do that. Does that make you nervous? I’m not going to apologise for speaking or taking up space.” Banoffee said. Check out Banoffee’s new EP and catch her live at St Jerome’s Laneway in 2016.

Sheena Easton first caught attention in the early ‘80s when she sweetly sang about her baby taking the morning train, a few years later she had moved to America and was making provocative records filled with sexual undertones written by Prince. Chatting to OUTinPerth from L.A. the singer had a simple answer to explain the change in her career direction, “I grew up!” Easton states her voice showing little of her Scottish roots. Easton said she could see a lot of similarities between her journey and pop artist today who started as Disney Princess saying once you become an adult, you want to make adult music. “I started recording when I was nineteen and in college, by the time I got to my third album I’d been around the world half a dozen times and I’d matured, and so had my musical tastes.” Easton said. On her third album Easton recorded the track ‘Strut’ which saw her appear much more sexual, and the album also contained a track called ‘Sugar Walls’ which was written by Prince and alluded to oral sex. Conservative groups listed the song as one of the ‘Filthy Fifteen’ tunes, arguing that music should come with more warning labels. Easton said the controversy didn’t help or hinder the songs success, by the time people were complaining about the song it had already been up and down the charts. The singer said she has no problem with parents choosing what their kids listen to. “That’s what good parents do, they parent their kids. Adults should be able to do what they want. If someone said to me ‘I think that song is too suggestive for my ten year old’, well fine by me – don’t let them hear it. It never offended me” Easton laughs though, adding that now she’s a parent herself she know that the kids will just want to listen to banned music even more. Sheena Easton is coming to Australia this month, but sadly is no longer coming to Perth. Head to www.outinperth.com to read our full interview.

Freeheld (M)

He Named Me Malala

The powerful story of a lesbian couple from New Jersey who were forced to fight for equality when one was dying from cancer won an Oscar for Best Short Documentary in 2008. To reach a wider audience, screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) has written this story of activism as a heartbreaking love story. Police detective Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) and her partner Stacie Andree (Ellen Page) are ordinary people who find themselves in an extraordinary situation. Earned by 23 years of service, Laurel’s pension would go to her partner if they were married but this was denied her same-sex partner.

In 2012 Malala Yousafzai was injured when Taliban gunmen opened fire on her and her friends in a school bus in Pakistan. The then 15-year-old teenager, who had been targeted for speaking out on behalf of girls’ education in her region, was shot in the head, sparking international media outrage. Despite still suffering from some facial paralysis and hearing loss, the Pakistani teenager has since has become a leading campaigner for the rights of girls worldwide to access education. In December 2014, she became the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.

Directed by Peter Sollett

Directed by Davis Guggenheim

As a police officer, Laurel had been shot at, punched, kicked and dragged by a car. Now she was dying of lung cancer, she was not asking for special treatment but equality. With the help of fellow detective Dane Wells (Michael Shannon) and larger-than-life activist Steven Goldstein (Steve Carell), Laurel and Stacie spend their last days together fighting for justice. This timely film reminds us that it is the personal struggles that are at the heart of any battle for equality. “It was not just a story of the messy complexities of social change in the making, but of love, courage, community and endurance” says Cynthia Wade who made the original documentary.

(PG)

Afghan folklore tells of a fearless woman named Malala who rallied Pashtun fighters against British invaders in 1880. In hugely patriarchal Pakistan where females don’t even make it onto the family tree, Malala insists that her father may have named her but she alone has chosen to speak out about injustice. Guggenheim’s documentary shows her as a powerful speaker addressing the United Nations as well as inspiring school girls. It also shows her an ordinary teenager being affectionate and playful in her family setting and struggling with her school work. Wise beyond her years, Malala is also quite humorous as she courageously tries to change the world.

The Dressmaker (M) Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse

This film’s pedigree is established early with cinematography by the legendary Don McAlpine. Based on the best-selling novel by Rosalie Ham set in 1951, the small, isolated, dust-bowl town of Dungatar is populated by quirky yet endearing characters. Kate Winslet is fantastic as Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage who returns to the town of her childhood after working in fashion houses in Paris and Milan. With her Singer sewing machine and figure-hugging dresses, Tilly is on a mission to right the wrongs of the past. As Tilly’s mother ‘Mad’ Molly, Judy Davis steals every scene she is in and she is just one of the characters who has kept secrets for all of Tilly’s life. Although he hasn’t got as many outfits as his character in the book, Hugo Weaving savours his role as the cross-dressing policeman who salivates in the presence of beautiful material and accessories … and Liam Hemsworth is deliciously charismatic as the love interest Teddy McSwiney. Tilly uses her sewing skills to get to know the women of the town, beginning with helping the shopkeeper’s daughter Gertrude Pratt (Sarah Snook) to snare a marriage proposal. Slowly piecing together what happened twenty years ago when she was banished from the town, she also uncovers misdeeds perpetrated on others in the town. This bittersweet gothic tale can only have one ending.

The fifth season of Annabel Crabb’s ‘Kitchen Cabinet’ has just begun on the ABC. The show sees the ABC’s charming political journalist visit politicians at home and together they prepare a meal. The simple premise puts politicians in a different light, giving them an opportunity to appear more relaxed and speak more philosophically about issues and reflect upon the political game. The laid back approach often reveals hidden insights and curious observations. Annabel Crabb spoke to OUTinPerth ahead of the first episode going to air, chatting on her mobile as she navigated Sydney’s streets, her arms filled with bags and belongings. Having just appeared in the ABC’s ‘The Drum’ she was on the lookout for a taxi while talking about her latest politico-culinary adventures. Crabb said she’d learned a lot about politicians while making the show. “I’ve learned a lot of weird stuff about politicians, but I’ve always been interested in the random details of people’s lives.” Crabb said. “Politicians are responsible for a lot of decision making. If they take an interest in a particular subject or issue – that gives that subject or issue incredible prominence. They have the power to address wrongs or highlight the concerns of people in all sorts of different corners of the continent.” Crabb said she’s always intrigued by what issues get a politician’s attention. “What makes the difference between an issue that a politician will pick up and run with, die in a ditch for, or ignore completely is really subjective.” Crabb said, “It’s governed by their own life experience, their own prejudices, passions and disappointments. I often think if we learn about that stuff we’re in a better position to know how that politician will jump on a particular issue.”

Crabb said when you meet politicians in their house they are more likely to be more vulnerable. “It’s really hard for politicians to be vulnerable, it’s not a quality that they like exhibiting in parliament. That’s a real rough and tumble place and you don’t want to expose any weak spots because someone will kick them right there” Crabb said the version of people you get on the show is someone on their best behaviour. “They’ve tidied up the house, they’re being incredibly nice, and mean Scott Morrison opened the door and presented me with a bunch of flowers, which is not something he’d probably do if I was an asylum seeker from Sri Lanka. You do get them at their most charming.” While the presentation may be sugar-coated, Crabb argues that politics is a profession where we often see the worst of people. “Often their fighting each other, attacking each other, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but I think it’s useful to see these people when they’re not under attack. I think you learn different things.” Upcoming episodes in this series see Crabb heading to Arnhem land to meet Senator Nova Perris and goes off the grid with Greens Leader Richard Di Natale. Kitchen Cabinet is on ABC on Thursday nights at 8pm Graeme Watson

Josh Thomas has been making waves across the globe with his hit show ‘Please Like Me’. The third season is currently screening on the ABC. On the show we’ve seen Josh go through some serious drama; supporting his family, boy trouble, ex-lovers and new siblings – what can we expect him to face in season 3? Well, more of that really. Everyone just trying their best to get through the day without hurting anyone’s feelings. The show is largely about the little moments and conversations between people. There’s no bomb threats or prison break out scenes. The Aussie TV landscape has a severe lack of LGBTI inclusive content, let alone a program that centres on a queer protagonist; did this shape how you created the show? The show is just about my life, and my life involves getting crushes on boys, family issues and hanging out with my dog John. So that’s what the show is. I never meant the show to be a political statement. Sometimes people think by being gay you are making some sort of big stand just by existing. It’s just pretty boring to me to be gay. I do it every day. There’s also a lot of content that deals with mental health throughout the series, is this something that’s close to your heart? My Mum lives with mental illness, so it’s a part of my home life. Some bits of the mum character in the show is based on that. Living with friends and family dealing with mental illness I wanted to show real characters with those issues still having a life that isn’t just all about the illness. Depressed people laugh you know. It’s not all just people wearing grey sitting in the dark. I wanted to show a rounded look at it. How much of a diva is John the Cavoodle? John is the most important cast member on set. He is the most loved and is always the best treated. As it should be. He doesn’t demand it. It just is. Season 3 of Please Like Me is airing Thursdays at 9:30 on ABC. Leigh Hill

food Creating a perfect picnic is easy, the challenge is to create some dishes that can be easily transported and don’t need a lot of work to create. Fill a plate with some Lavosh crackers, dips, dried fruit and marinated eggplant.

Try out these salads, pulled pork with kale coleslaw or chicken with spicy rice noodles.

Create salads in a jar by layering ingredients. Put the dressing first followed by grains, nuts and legumes, then add vegetables. Turn them out into a bowl for instant salad.

Cold Fried Chicken is always a winner, we marinated the chicken in buttermilk and herbs before shallow frying with a herb and breadcrumb coating.

Make a giant sandwich by cutting a sourdough loaf in half and then layering cold meat, roasted eggplant, sundried tomatoes, artichokes and cheese. Cut into thick wedges to eat.

Leave the soft drinks behind and bring a big jug of iced tea, fill it up with slices of lemon and orange.

The PrideFEST Picnic is on Saturday 9:00 – 12:00 at Russell Square on 7 November, while the Picnic in the Park is at the AIDS Memorial in Robertson Park on 12:30 – 4:00pm Sunday November 15. Head to www.outinperth.com for recipes.

Rodney Croome will launch his new marriage equality book, "From This Day Forward" in Perth on Monday November 16th. To commemorate International Intersex Awareness Day, OUTinPerth is republishing this section from Rodney's book on how exclusion from marriage affects transgender and intersex Australians. The problems faced by transgender and intersex people too often go unnoticed in the marriage equality debate, as they do in society. But the fixation of Australia’s Marriage Act on gender places particular legal burdens on them.

caught in a rip. I have since transitioned to being what I know I was always meant to be, a woman. I am again in a wonderful relationship with a woman I love very much and we are jointly raising my foster granddaughter. Yet, now I am not allowed to marry. I am still the same person. My current relationship is as committed and meaningful as my former marriage. Our responsibilities to each other, and to the child we look after, are the same. So why does the law treat us differently? Why could I marry then and not now? It makes no sense.” ‘From This Day Forward: marriage equality in Australia’ will be launched at 5:30 pm Monday November 16th at the Prescott Room, Vice-Chancellery, UWA Book sales and signings will follow the launch, this is a free event with RSVPs essential. RSVP by 10th November to Murilla.measom@uwa.edu.au

For example, in Australia a small number of married partners have undergone gender transition so they are now the same gender as their spouse. But if they seek to have their new gender recognised in identity documents like a birth certificate they must first divorce. Forced divorce where one partner is transgender is not actually a requirement of the federal Marriage Act. It is an overzealous demand of state laws put in place to uphold the exclusion of same-sex partners from marriage. From the point of view of upholding the values of marriage, forced divorce makes no sense at all. It is absurd that a law made to defend marriage actually destroys some marriages, forcing some couples to break their vows of lifelong commitment against their will. It is equally wrong that those transgender partners who want to protect their marriage are forced to live a lie about their gender identity. Most of all, it is cruel that at a moment of stress in a relationship – the gender transition of one of the partners – the government wants to remove one of the partners’ best buttresses, their marriage. Listen carefully the next time you hear a politician talk about laws that force couples to divorce when one partner is transgender. If they defend forced divorce as a way to defend marriage they either have a highly abstract and ideological understanding of marriage far removed from the experience of most people, or their disdain for same-sex unions is so great they are willing to sacrifice existing marriages to satisfy it. If the problem for transgender folk is that the law makes it hard for them to stay married, the problem for intersex people is that they can’t marry in the first place. Intersex people are born with anatomical and genetic characteristics of both sexes. Because the Marriage Act says only a man and a woman can marry, intersex people are excluded completely. Australian court decisions from the 1970s confirm this exclusion. There is a way around these rulings. Just as transgender people can lie about their true gender to stay married, so intersex people can hide who they are behind the old boy/girl divide in order to wed. But after struggling for a lifetime to understand and accept who they truly are, intersex people should not be expected to go back into the closet. Australian intersex advocate, Gina Wilson, explains the painful choice the law presents: “I have to confine myself to a lie to be entitled to marriage. I have to agree that I am either a male or a female and continue on with the shame and secrecy that has plagued me all my life. I have to hide that I am intersex, hide my actual physical characteristics of birth. My argument would be for a marriage equality bill before the parliament to allow intersex people to marry simply by making it a union between two consenting adults.” A good marriage is about what’s in your heart, not what’s between your legs. Yet the Australian Marriage Act says the opposite. The life stories of transgender and intersex Australians highlight this gap between what marriage is and what the law says it should be. Take just one story, that of transgender advocate, Martine Delaney; “When I was still outwardly a man, I was married to a wonderful woman. She was a widow, with two sons who we raised together. Twelve years after we met – still married and very much in love - she drowned, moments after saving a young girl who’d been
