BAD DECISIONS Former Prime Minister John Howard recently revealed that he, like most Australians, would have preferred to see the issue of marriage equality dealt with via a free vote by parliamentarians rather than a public plebiscite. While former PM Tony Abbott’s plan to delay marriage equality through the proposal for an expensive plebiscite might be seen as clever politics, at its heart it’s just a very bad decision. It declares that the nation’s politicians are not up to doing their job, and I suspect people who support the idea are mostly embracing it out of the frustration of their elected representative’s inaction. When Malcolm Turnbull toppled Abbott he made a bad decision too, he decided to stick with the expensive and time consuming plan. It wouldn’t be Turnbull’s only bad decision, he added to the growing assault on LGBTIQ people and their families, by offering an investigation into the Safe Schools Coalition. Coalition back benchers, (and Labor’s outgoing Senator Joe Bullock), are calling for this anti-bullying program that stops LGBTIQ students from being subjected to horrendous abuse and psychological damage to be cancelled. Not adapted, updated, or revised, but completely cancelled.

say that is going to cause the greatest harm to millions of LGBTIQ Australians and their families. It’s the comments they spur on.

The hateful accusation underneath articles on news websites, the insulting emails sent to activists, advocates and lobbyists and the random comments in the street. This is what is going to hurt, the LGBTIQ communities are under attack. Now the cat’s out of the bag, the people will need their plebiscite. As John Howard said, once it’s promised it needs to be delivered. True leadership would be admitting it’s just a really bad idea and making a better choice, but if we have to stick with it, let’s limit damage and rein in the vitriol. At the very least the Prime Minister should fast track the plebiscite and hold it in conjunction with the election. Graeme Watson editor@outinperth.com

If there were any legitimate concerns about the content of the program, why the harsh ‘baby and the bathwater’ approach to its review? Many have suggested because these politicians just don’t like homosexuality. The gates have been opened and the outrageous accusations have begun, from Nationals’ member George Christensen comparing the program to pedophilic grooming, to a former Liberal politician Chris Miles threatening to print millions of flyers claiming the children of gay and lesbian parents are more likely to be drug addicted, contract sexual transmitted diseases and have mental health problems. But, to borrow an analogy from the Marriage Alliance’, this is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s not what these current and former politicians

“Dancing Queen” is arguably one of ABBA’s most popular songs. Released in August 1976, the single lead the release of the band’s fourth album ‘Arrival’. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release, what is arguably now Australia’s most authentic ABBA tribute show, ‘GOLD The Ultimate ABBA Show’ are coming our way. Singer Hayley Maybury, who plays Agnetha Fasltscog in the show, said she had a lot of fun playing the famous Swedish blonde; “It’s absolutely amazing, going from singing ABBA tunes on ‘SingStar’ a few years ago to performing with real life band behind me is a dream come true!”

Hayley said the show successfully captured the music of the band as well as the band’s costumes and on stage personas. “Our aim is to recreate the experience of going to see ABBA back in the day… we want people to get up and sing and dance!”. The show has locked in three WA dates, Thursday March 10 at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, Friday March 11 at Albany Entertainment Centre and Saturday March 12 at The Astor in Mount Lawley.

The Year 12 Perspectives exhibition is now in its 24th year of celebrating the creative talents of local students at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Associate Curator of Projects at AGWA Dunja Rmandic says those on the panel who chose this year’s entries were looking for originality of ideas and technical prowess. “It wasn’t just that something was really well drawn or painted, it was the potential of the student as well to show progress.” Rmandic and her colleagues on the panel went over 300 pieces and had to pare it down to 58 works. “I was really surprised by the quality of the work… the standard at that level is very specific,” she said, “The standard was much, much better than I’d anticipated.” The works employ a range of media, including illustration, painting, photography, textiles and more. Year 12 Perspectives will be at the Art Gallery of Western Australia from March 12th – June 13th. Pictured:- INFJ (introvert, intuition, feeling, judging) by Noni Mills, 2015

Local importer and tea aficionado Keith Archer says there isn’t a right or a wrong way to brew a cup of tea. Mr Archer, who runs local tea house Chapels on Whatley is on a mission to get people to relax and enjoy a cuppa instead of worrying about the so-called “rules”. “You know how you get coffee elitists - don’t burn the milk, it’s got to be at this degree or that degree – at the end of the day it’s there for you to enjoy,” he says. “You even get these kettles now that tell you what teas should be brewed at what temperature, its rubbish!” Mr Archer says tea in ingrained into culture, and everyone has their own views on what makes the perfect cup. “The way tea is drunk in Asian countries is completely different to the way in which tea is drunk in England – it doesn’t make one way better than the other,” he says “I visit China every year as part of our tea wholesale operation and the Chinese cringe when I add milk to my black tea – but it’s how I like it, so why not?” Mr Archer says that in all cultures, the ritual of drinking tea revolves around taking time out of your day to unwind alone, or to spend a moment with loved ones.

acknowledged for what they truly are. “Pu-erh tea is often known as “the living tea” due to the fermentation process the leaf undergoes during production.” Pu-erh tea, like Oolong, is known to have has shown to promote a number of health benefits in regular drinkers. While Oolong can help to increase your metabolism, Pu-erh can aid in digestion and lower bad cholesterol. “My first introduction to Pu-erh tea was in summer on one of my first visits to Yunan, China. Being Summer, the Chrysanthemum flower was added taking the edge off the robust taste to give a sweet aftertaste.” Chrysanthemum is a common flavouring in Chinese teas, believed to aid in removing heat from your body – and just one of the many ways Mr Archer recommends you could enjoy your own cup. “The real basis of tea is enjoying it. Relaxing. It’s like meditation,” he says. Chapels on Whatley has dozens of imported and flavoured teas, curated by Mr Archer. Pop by and have a cuppa with Keith at 196 Whatley Crescent, Maylands.

While there are many different common strains of tea that we all know, such as black and green, Mr Archer stresses that they all come from the same plant and it is the production process that differentiates the types. “Many people don’t realise that most of the herbal and fruit teas aren’t actually tea at all, they are often dried fruit rather than tea leaves.” Mr Archer says that some lesser known varieties of tea, such as the ancient Oolong and Pu-erh styles, are gaining popularity here in Australia, but are usually branded here as diet drinks or not

Bullying program

under review The national program that aims to reduce bulling of LGBTIQ+ students is being reviewed by the federal government following an outcry from religious groups and coalition backbenchers. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull ordered an investigation into the program after South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi tabled a petition with 9,400 signatories calling for the program to be defunded. In subsequent media interview Senator Bernardi described the program as “indoctrinating” children. The Australian Christian Lobby has been campaigning against the program since last year vowing to have it closed down.

Marriage Forum head seeks Liberal pre-selection

Dr David van Gend, the head of the Marriage Forum advocacy group who campaign against marriage equality, has declared his candidacy to represent the Liberal party in the federal division of Groom in Queensland. The Marriage Forum came to national prominence when they released an advertisement in 2014 asking people to ‘think of the child’ in relation to marriage equality. State member John McVeigh has also announced his candidacy for the seat.

WA parent representative reports no complaints about Safe Schools Coaliton program

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews delivered a scathing response to the Prime Minister’s decision and the criticisms of the program by several federal Liberal MPs.

Kylie Catto, President of the Western Australian Council of State School Organisation revealed how many complaints parents have raised about the Safe Schools Coaliton.

“I don’t think these extreme Liberals are actually offended by the structure of the program, or the teachers who lead it.

Speaking on radio station 6PR’s ‘Mornings with Gary Adshead’ on February 26th the President of the peak body representing Parent and Citizen groups across Western Australia said her organisation had not received a single complaint about the program.

“I just think they’re offended by the kids who need it. They don’t like the fact that some young people might be different.” Mr Andrews posted to his Facebook page. The anti-bullying program was developed in Victoria before being rolled out nationally. The review of the program is being conducted by Western Australian professors Bill Louden and Donna Cross. The professor’s report is expected to be delivered on March 11th. The Greens later tabled two counter-petitions in parliament showing public support for the program. The combined petitions contained over 70,000 signatories. Greens Senator Robert Simms said it was time for the Prime Minister to show leadership on the issue. “It is time for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to stand up to the arch conservatives on his back bench and support the Safe Schools program like so many Australians do.” Senator Simms said.

“Not one complaint Gary,” Ms Catto said, “We haven’t through our councillors, through our office, or through me directly as President.” Ms Catto said the organisation had been very involved in the development of the WA Equal Opportunity Commission’s guidelines for supporting sexual and gender diversity in schools and endorsed that as an organisation. The organisation represents over 650 state school organisations across Western Australia. Ms Catto said the feedback they had received has been overwhelmingly positive and many students had benefited from a positive school environment.

real opposition there is to the program outside the campaigns run by Christian lobby groups and conservative politicians. Liberal senator Eric Abetz is one of the several backbenchers advocating for the program to be withdrawn from close to 500 schools across Australia. Last month Mr Abetz appeared on the ABC and said thousands of parents wanted the program to be cancelled.

The revelation that no direct complaints have been received from parents threw into question how much

Christensen compares Safe Schools program to paedophilic child grooming Last month Queensland Liberal MP George Christensen told parliament the Safe School’s program is similar to paedophilic grooming. Mr Christensen outlined a ‘six degrees of separation’ concern that students accessing the program’s online resources could be transported to sites containing sadomasochism, pornography, sex shops and sex clubs. “The safe Schools ‘All of Us’ teaching resource directs students to the LGBT organisation Twenty10. On the 19th of January this year Twenty10 held a hands on workshop for youth on sex toys and sadomasochistic practices.” Mr Christensen said. Mr Christensen outlined that from the Minus 18 website there was a link to ‘The Tool Shed’ which he described as an online pornographic sex shop offering a line of sex toys, sadomasochistic items and pornography. Mr Christensen said another link could take students to an advice site that promoted group sex, using sex toys and sadomasochism. The politician said it was a concern that students would be able to click through to erotic material. The politician uploaded a diagram on how to reach the sex clubs and sadomasochistic material to his Twitter account. “If someone proposed exposing a child to this material a parent would probably call the police because it would sound a lot like grooming work that a sexual predator might undertake.” Mr Christensen said. “The Safe Schools program focuses heavily on child and teenage sexual activity and sexual attractions. It justifies almost any sexual activity. It diminishes possible risks and harms, encourages young people to hide their activities from their parents, provides link to adult sex clubs, adult online communities and sex shops. What’s more, the program portrays all of this as normal.” Mr Christensen said. Following Mr Christensen’s speech the Prime Minter said people should use carefully measured language when speaking about the issue.

Labor’s Bill Shorten voices support for Safe Schools Coalition Labor leader Bill Shorten made a trip to WA last month to launch the campaign of Matt Keogh, Labor’s candidate for the new federal seat of Burt. Mr Keogh and Mr Shorten made a visit to Hilbert’s Xavier Primary School to talk up their education policy. During his media conference Mr Shorten touched on Labor’s support for marriage equality and the Safe Schools Coalition. “I do think the government needs to explain what it wants to do and why it wants to do it,” Mr Shorten said of the Turnbull government’s policies. “Before Malcolm Turnbull became leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister, he was all for having a free vote in Parliament on marriage equality. Now, he wants to kick the issue of marriage equality down the road and cost taxpayers $160 million for a very divisive public debate that his own team won’t even be bound to.” OUTinPerth asked Mr Shorten about the recent criticism of the Safe Schools Coalition from conservative groups and in the media. The Labor leader said he absolutely supports the Safe Schools program.

“I do not support increasing the chances of teenagers being bullied at school. Being a teenager in Australia is not easy, and certainly no parent of a teenager would think that life’s easy – I should know. What I also say is that we’ve got to make sure our kids go to school in a safe manner.” Mr Shorten said that the Safe Schools Coalition should not be subject to right wing ideology, asserting that all children have a right to feel safe. “I wish the right wing of the Liberal party would stop worrying about what’s going on in other people’s lives and focus on the economy. Focus on making sure our schools are properly funded. Focus on making sure that Medicare is not being undermined, that our hospitals aren’t in crisis.” “Why is it that some of these social issues seem to preoccupy half of Mr Turnbull’s government more than unemployment, more than protecting the Australian steel industry more than schools, hospitals or climate change?”

Ex-Liberal MP may print ‘millions’ of copies of anti-gay flyer

Confusion over plebiscite timing A former Liberal MP has generated a pamphlet claiming that children of samesex parents are more prone to sexually transmitted diseases, unemployment and drug abuse. The Sydney Morning Herald leaked the pamphlet funded by one-time minister of the Howard Government Chris Miles entitled ‘National Vote: Same Sex Mirage’, promoting a ‘no’ vote ahead of the proposed marriage plebiscite. Mr Miles’ pamphlet also claims that “married biological parents have a better record for providing safety and development of healthy, well-adjusted adult children.” Speaking to Fairfax Media, Mr Miles says he may print millions of copies in the lead up to the vote. “If we are going to have a plebiscite, people need to be informed,” Mr Miles said. “These will be distributed throughout Australia at the grass roots.” Marriage equality proponents condemned the pamphlet, saying the claims show how damaging and divisive a marriage equality plebiscite can be. Australian Marriage Equality national director Rodney Croome says this is just the start of the anti-gay misinformation

campaign Australians will have to endure if the government goes ahead with a plebiscite. “Australia can avoid a damaging plebiscite campaign, and we could have marriage equality by mid year, if parliament is simply allowed to do its job and has a free vote,” Mr Croome said. “Not only is the information on this flyer wrong, it will put the lives of young gay people and the children of same-sex couples at risk by reinforcing the message that they and their families are broken.” In Parliament, Labor and The Greens continue to call for a free vote over a plebiscite on marriage, citing the potential harms a debate will have on young LGBTI people. Greens sexuality spokesperson Senator Robert Simms said the flyer is the latest example of this ugly campaign against equality. “It’s clear conservative extremists are planning an ugly hate campaign levelled at the LGBTI community and the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is sitting back and letting it happen. “The Greens are concerned for the impact this kind of hurtful campaign might have on young people in particular.”

Government ministers have contradicted each other as different time frames for the proposed marriage plebiscite.

about how and when the plebiscite would be run. Senator Abetz described Senator Brandis’s announcement as “surprising”.

On Monday March 7th, Treasurer Scott Morrison disputed the time frame announced a day earlier by the Attorney General George Brandis.

‘These are matters that the party room still has to sort out in some detail,’ Senator Abetz told The Australian.

Attorney General George Brandis told SKY News that the plebiscite would be held after the federal election, but before the end of the year. Senator Brandis said he expected the legislation allowing same sex couples to wed would also be passed before the end of 2016. The announcement from Senator Brandis sparked immediate speculation that the Prime Minister might be considering a July election date. Within hours the Prime Minister’s Office was disputing the time frame put forward by Senator Brandis, saying the plebiscite would be held “as soon as possible’ after the election. Following this announcement Treasurer Scott Morrison told radio station 2GB that the government has decided nothing beyond the fact that a plebiscite would be held. “The details of how it is constructed and the question and all of those sorts of things – that is still detail to be worked through and that will go through the normal cabinet process, including the ultimate timing of these things.” Mr Morrison claimed. Tasmanian Senator Eric Abetz also confirmed that Liberal MPs were yet to see any details

Shadow Attorney General Mark Dreyfus responded to the differing time frames put forward by saying coalition ministers need to get on the same page. “They need to get their stories straight, but most of all, Turnbull should be dropping this wasteful, and very divisive plebiscite,” Mr Dreyfus told ABC radio. Mr Dreyfus said the Labor party’s position remained the same, arguing that a plebiscite was costly and unnecessary. “Let parliamentarians do the job we are meant to do which is pass laws, to legislate.” Mr Dreyfus argued. The Greens spokesperson on marriage equality, South Australian Senator Robert Simms (pictured) said the government’s plebiscite plan had unravelled. “The confusion continues today with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Attorney General George Brandis appearing to take different positions on the plebiscite timeline,” Senator Simms said. The Australian Christian Lobby called on people to stop “white anting” the plebiscite and argued that the government’s position has not changed.

ITALY Senate passes same-sex unions Italy have made steps towards legalising same-sex unions after making a number of amendments to previously proposed bills. The bill was stalled in Italy’s upper house for many weeks due to a raging debate over a provision which would allow one partner to adopt the child of the other. Lawmakers have removed the adoption clause, which has allowed the bill to pass by a landslide. The new bill is expected to make it through the upper house unhindered, which will see same-sex unions become a reality in Italy. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has lauded the passing as “historic”. LGBT activists in Italy are disappointed by the whittled down version of the bill, reportedly calling it a betrayal. Prime Minister Renzi’s support for allowing the adoption clause was the primary reason the bill took so long to pass through the senate, and his capitulation has disappointed many LGBTIQ Italians. LGBT rights group Arcigay’s president Flavio Romani told Reuters that the bill does not consider children who need definitive laws and protections. “The law that has come out of all this is lacking its heart,” Romani says. Prime Minister Renzi chose to back down on the adoption amendment after Italy’s highest court ruled against recognising a same-sex partnership as joint parents of a child adopted from the United States.

INDONESIA

Crackdown on LGBTI emojis The Indonesian Government has told social media operators WhatsApp and Facebook to remove queer emojis from their apps. Social media app Line has already removed the gay emojis, after receiving complaints from conservative users.

Government spokesperson Ismail Cawidu said that no social media may “show items that smack of LGBT.” “Because we have our own rules, like religious values and norms, which they must respect.” Human rights groups have criticised the Indonesian government for the crackdown, including Setara Institute research director Ismail Hasani. “It brings to the public the message that LGBT is something which must be opposed, and then the public, through various organisations, will enact such opposition,” Hasani told the BBC. “Public opinion in our country is predominantly anti-LGBT, but it is deplorable that the government follows this opinion.”

CHINA Gay relationships banned on TV The Chinese government has shut down all instances of gay people on television in an attempt to remove what they describe as “vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content.” Censors have revealed new regulations for content that features homosexuality, extramarital affairs and one night stands – deeming such matters content that “exaggerates the dark side of society.” Popular YouTube series, ‘Addicted’, was removed from Chinese websites last month for its depiction of men in same-sex relationships. The drama was reported to have millions of viewers before its removal. China’s government said that ‘Addicted’ did not comply with the new censorship laws, which outline that “no television drama shall show abnormal sexual relationships and behaviours, such as incest, samesex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on.” LGBTI activists in China have slammed the crackdown, who have been working hard to dispel stigma in the country. Homosexuality was decriminalised in 1997, and removed from the nations list of mental illnesses in 2001.

“You look at the hate and disgust that’s directed at us, and what do we do? We don’t become terrorists, we throw a party. We throw a parade, we bring love, we ask for equality.” Comedian Magda Szubanski on the TODAY show

Star War director J.J. Abrams responds to suggestion that Star Wars could have a gay character.

Regardless of the colour of our skin, our gender or sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, we all want the same things – respect, care, compassion and acceptance. We are all human beings.” Michael Masutha ,South African Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Advocate, opening a conference on gender and sexuality in Africa.

Melissa Etheridge’s ‘This is M.E.’ tour has been winding its way around the globe and will hit Perth at the start of April. The singer took some time out from her busy schedule and phoned OUTinPerth from New Zealand.

The singer shared that she was really enjoying being on the road and joked that she couldn’t remember when this tour began, and despite her show in Perth being the last on her schedule, whether it would ever actually end. “It started in America, then I went to Europe, and then back to America, and we hit America a lot last year and now I’m down here, then I’m going to back to America and then I get to go to Australia, one trip down under is not enough for me.” Etheridge said. Etheridge said playing a solo show allowed her a lot of freedom to choose which songs to perform each night and she’s also been known to thrown in the occasion unexpected cover. “Sometime I’ll just pick something inspirational, a few nights ago it was David Bowie, or I might do something from The Eagles. I’m a huge music lover so there’s a lot out there to choose from.” Being alone on stage has given the musician a whole new set of challenges. “I’ve learned so much and grown so much as a musician, I think I’ve created something really interesting with looping drum beats, and acoustic guitar, and then I play my electric guitar, I’m truly having a blast!” Etheridge said. “You can go anywhere when your on your own, it’s just up to the audience, how crazy do we go?” Etheridge said she was amazed by how much Perth has grown and changed since her fist visit. “I first went there in 1989, and it’s so different now, it’s really amazing.” Etheridge said, “Perth is out on the edge of nowhere, but your city has grown so much!” Etheridge said the beauty of being an independent artist was that she could keep going until she wanted to do something different. In 2014 Etheridge released her thirteenth album ‘This is M.E.’ on her own record label, her decision to go independent ended her long relationship with Island Records who signed her in the mid1980’s. The singer said she was enjoying having a lot more control over her career. “I get to call all the shots, but I also get to wear all the blame too.” Etheridge said. “I get to call all the shots creatively, but also I get to look after the business side.

The singer said the business side of being a rock star had made her look at many different questions about how her music is released and promoted.

of shake your head and realise that it is something very important. I believe you’ll keep it up until you have that equality. It’s going to be soon I think.”

“‘How am I going to spend the money?’ ‘How am I going to do this?’ ‘How do I market it?’, and ‘How do I distribute it?’” said Etheridge listing off the decisions she faced.

Later in the year Etheridge is going to head off on her first cruise, and she said she has fears about being stuck on a ship for five days with her most dedicated fans.

“I’ve become so much more a business woman, but it allows me to make new relationships in the music business who understand how the industry is changing and how important live performance is.”

“I’ve sent a ship off before but I’ve never played on one,’ the singer said. “I’m looking forward to spending that time with fans... it’s going to be a blast with me and Joan Jett, I can’t wait.”

Etheridge said her long term success in the music game came down to the loyalty and support of her enthusiastic fans.

Etheridge said she does have a new musical project coming and will be heading back into the studio this month, but she refused to give away any details aside from saying she’s very excited and that it will be a “really amazing” project.

“They are very loyal and they take me into a very private part of their lives,” Etheredge said of her fans, “I share their lives, their memories and they take me into their most personal moments, I’m in their car, I got through their break-ups with them, I’m a big part of their lives and it means a lot to me.” Etheridge laughs when I suggest she is the Queen of break-up songs, agreeing that if there was a poll for best break-up tunes she’d be the winner. While Etheridge’s life has had its fair share of break ups, but she’s found happiness with her wife, actress and writer Linda Wallem. The couple wed in 2014. It was Etheridge’s first legal union and something she’d been at the forefront of fighting for. Etheridge offered her support to advocates in Australia who continue to fight for marriage equality. “What I can say is that in America, it is working and people need to keep up the fight and it just takes time and just keep organising and it just takes people to change their mind. “The only reason it happened in America is because people came out and said ‘I’m gay, I’m part of your school, I’m part of your job, I live down the street, I’m part of your neighbourhood and the fabric of society.’ You change hearts and minds.” Etheridge said. Etheridge said the fact the Australian government does not recognise her marriage when she’s in Australia was a shame. “It’s a shame”, Etheridge said pausing momentarily, “You just kind

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical ‘Cats’ is coming our way, this triumphant revival has been wowing audiences in Melbourne and Sydney. Perth will be the next city to head to the Jellicle Ball.

OUTinPerth chatted to performer Ross Hannaford who plays Skimbleshanks in the musical. Appearing at the Crown Theatre won’t be a new experience for Hannaford, he’s previously performed in ‘Wicked’, ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘A Chorus Line’. When you play a cat do you find yourself studying cats all the time? I used to, but not so much anymore. There’s always an endless supply of funny YouTube videos of cats. We did have to study them a lot in rehearsals, but we’ve been doing the show for a while now so I’ve got that down now. When did you first come across this musical? Oh, way back when! I think it was when Debra Byrne was playing it for the second time in the early ‘90s. That’s my first recollection of it. I was about six or seven and my parents took me to see the show. It was one of the first musicals I ever saw, so I feel like I’ve come full circle to be playing in it now, it’s quite special. What’s the highlight of this show for you as a performer?

The songs and music from ‘Cats’ have a certain ‘earworm’ quality, do the tunes get stuck in your head? They do! We’ve done over a hundred performances now and they’re not the sort of songs you want stuck in your head when you go home from work, but there it is. I respect this show because you can go away humming the tunes. I’ve see a lot of musicals where later you can’t remember a single tune, but this one is very catchy, I think that’s why people have such nostalgia for it and want to see it again. How long does it take for you to transform into a cat? It depends how fast you want to get it done, I’ve got it down to about twenty five minutes, but then there are other days where you’re not rushing, yesterday it took me an hour and fifteen minutes. It’s the most preparation that I’ve ever had to do for a musical, because it’s all three disciplines, singing, dancing and acting you have to do a lot of warm ups. What do you think a queer audience might get from ‘Cats’ that other audiences might not appreciate? It’s a big spectacle that everyone can enjoy, but I think the queer community really understands what it is to be ‘the other’ or a minority, and the central role of Grizabella, she’s most definitely an outcast and she’s judged by the community. In the show our spiritual leaders teaches us to accept her, and that only comes from self-understanding and finding the capacity to understand, it’s a beautiful storyline. ‘Cats’ is at the Crown Theatre from April 16 – May 8th for more info head to www.catsthemusical.com Graeme Watson

I love that it’s an ensemble piece, everybody in the show gets their moment to help carry the story along. It’s not stale in any way, we all get choices to make every night, so every show is different. Every show is unique. There’s no chance of it becoming boring because you have to make new ‘on the spot’ choices every night. I find that quite refreshing having come out of some of the major musicals out of America where there are very specific about where you stand and the way you travel, there’s no deviation. We get to make choices each night and that keeps it alive and in the moment.

Black Swan State Theatre Company is bringing the classic Australian novel ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ to the stage this month. The show’s a co-production with Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre and is being brought to life by acclaimed theatre director Matthew Lutton. Lutton said that he first read Joan Lindsay’s fictional book about a group of school girls who vanish from a Valentine’s Day picnic near a large rock formation a few years ago.

For Lutton one of the biggest challenges was keeping the scarier elements of the novel and working out how to bring them to life on stage.

“I read the book when I was preparing a production of a Patrick White play ‘A Night on Bald Mountain’, it was written about the same time, they both engaged with similar ideas about landscape, so that’s where the idea for this project happened.”

“It’s a challenge, how do you scare an audience in theatre. I think the experience does need to be one of terror and horror.” Lutton said.

Working from Lindsay’s book playwright Tom Wright has developed a new script. For many people the mentioned of ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ conjures up images of Australian landscapes and Australian Impressionism art movement, but Lutton thinks this is largely due to Peter Weir’s well known film version of the story. “Peter Weirs film really had that kind of nostalgia to it, a daydream sun-kissed landscape. Weir also spends a lot of the film in that landscape, the first three chapters of the book make up half of the film, but in the novel it’s only about an eight of the story.” Lutton said. The director said in developing the play they’d tried to stick closely to the novels storyline. People getting lost in the Australian landscape is something Lutton agrees is a large part of the Australian mythology, whether it’s a story on the nightly news, or the stories of great adventurers. Lutton said he didn’t find it surprising that many people thought this story was based on a real event.

“You don’t often see horror on stage, it’s not a common form in theatre, but it does goes back to things like telling ghost stories. You do think about how we scare people when we’re telling stories in the dark, it’s often about the way it primed, the set up and the mood. You don’t have to show people much to scare them, it’s something Hollywood worked out years ago, don’t show too much. “Theatre can do that well, but it’s the same with the decision to put the rock on stage – is it better to get the audience to use their imagination” Lutton said. ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’ opens in Perth on April 1st and runs until April 17th tickets are available at www.bsstc.com.au Photo credit: Andrew Gough, Pia Johnson

Director Luca Guadagnino on his latest collaboration with Tilda Swinton Actress Tilda Swinton and Italian director Luca Guadagnino have a long working relationship, the pair have worked together intermittently for decades. Their latest collaboration is ‘A Bigger Splash.’

The movie takes its name from David Hockney’s famous painting, but is also a remake of a 1970’s French film. In this new telling of ‘La Piscene (the Pool)’ the ingredients are mixed up and updated, created a suspenseful psychological exploration of relationships. Swinton is world famous rock star Marianne Lane. She’s decamped to the spare and remote island of Pantelleria in the Mediterranean to recover from surgery on her vocal chords. Under strict doctor’s orders she’s forbidden from speaking while she recuperates. Her younger boyfriend (Mathias Schoenaerts) accompanies her. The couple’s idyllic relaxation is interrupted when Marianne’s ex-boyfriend Harry (Ralph Fiennes) suddenly arrives, bringing in tow a recently discovered fully grown daughter, played by Dakota Fanning. Record producer Harry, and his nubile daughter, bring parties, fan attention, and a truckload of sexual tension disrupting the couple’s quiet getaway. When asked if the studio was concerned about the idea that the fabulous Tilda Swinton would have a largely non speaking role in the

film Luca Guadagnino reveals how he got them onboard. He simply kept it a secret. “I didn’t tell them until we’d started shooting,” Guadagnino laughed as we chatted on the phone, “I kept it a secret so no one would panic. Because I knew and I felt absolutely right about the choice, I didn’t want to create any discomfort or any disruptions.” The fact that Marianne can’t talk is a physical symbol of what’s she’s going through emotionally, while the film’s setting on a remote island away from society also echoes how alone the characters are. Guadagnino said these factors symbolise how complex relationships are.

“I think it’s about how much we are tangled up in our own relationships.” Guadagnino said. “I decided to shoot on the Island of Pantelleria, it was one of the reasons I decided to take up the offer of remaking ‘La Piscine’, it allowed me to make a film on Pantelleria, I thought it had these very extreme qualities that sort of created a new character amongst the four characters. The Island, the place itself is a character.”

“Being locked away on Pantellaria was in a way like a double envelope, because we were far away from everything, but also because we were absorbed in making the movie.”

When asked if the scenes where Dakota Fanning’s character Penny appears next to the pool in boxer shorts and sunglasses was a deliberate visual references to ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’, the director laughed. “I like that reference, because I love that Susan Seidelman movie, it was great! I think it was unconscious though to have a similar look. I love the character of Penelope and the way Dakota Johnson plays her.” While the other three actors had been attached to the film through its development Johnson was only cast just before the film began to shoot. Guadagnino said the late signing wasn’t because of the difficult of the character but the wealth of talent actresses vying for the role. “It wasn’t hard to find an actress for the role, it was hard because we had so many choices, and then you want to make the right choice.” Goardagnino said he was happy with his final selection and is proud of what Johnson’s performance.

With the cast locked away together on the remote island for the majority of the shoot, the actors and crew formed close bonds. Ralph Fiennes has described the process of shooting on the remote island as challenging as the cast were buffeted by strong winds. “It’s good for their concentration.” Guadagnino said of the isolation. While the director has never shot a feature in a big metropolitan city he said the process of making a film is naturally very enveloping, taking up all of his focus.

The film is an unexpected tale, tension rise between the four characters they each begin to become annoyed by little things, there are small indiscretions and old emotional wounds are reopened. When it does build to a climax, the outcome is unexpected and suddenly the characters are faced with a whole new set of psychological quandaries. ‘A Bigger Splash’ is out on March 24th.

WITH LOVE AND FURY

The performer, who has spent almost a decade entertaining local audiences with his drag persona Fab Panache, has retired from the world of drag. Instead he’s channeled his creative energy into spending late nights hitting the type writer keys to knock out his first novel. Schulz tell us about the experience of writing his first book and what the future holds for his performance career. What does it take to write a book? A lot of late nights and early mornings! Many months of mine were spent up until 2am with my eyes glued to the screen and fingers tapping at the keyboard.

I must say, as life never seems to stop, it took a lot of dedication and fore-going of relaxation, while still getting up early for work each day and fitting in the daily routine of life. This is not to say that I didn’t enjoy the experience, as each hour passed until that hand hit 2am (or thereabouts), my fingers literally did not stop tapping. In a way, it was quite the escape from reality and rather exciting for me at times, as if on a real life adventure. I related to this particular book in many ways, so there were some moments it was like taking a trip down memory lane – however I must make it known that the book is completely fiction. I suppose in any field there are moments we draw from our lives which inspire us to create, and that’s exactly what I did. I created a story drawn in-part from real life experiences, and adapted a much more exciting and thrilling story for readers! Some might say daunting! Did you write anything prior to tackling a novel? I have indeed written in the past, but obviously nothing to the extent of ‘Glitter, Blood & Tears’. I had a short story published while I was in High School, and I have many fond memories cooped up in my bedroom writing away. I remember evacuating cities, manipulating the weather, creating communities and even conjuring up characters with magical powers. If I think even further back, I remember one of my teachers in primary school raising concern about a series of axe-murderer picture books that I had been drawing and writing – yes, there’s some insight in terms of theme for you. In fact, a very vivid memory of mine was on a walk with my dad one day and he asked (or more so reassured himself) “you’re not going to grow up and kill me and mum in our sleep one day are you Ryan?” What was the inspiration for ‘Glitter, Blood and Tears’?

March 2016 29/02/2016 10:02 AM

Leading on from my childhood memory of my poor dad’s fear, I have always been a keen fan of horror and suspense – both films and books. My all time inspiration is the KING of horror himself Stephen King, and I have followed his work closely since the mid years of Primary School, secretly watching ‘The Shining’ when I was about grade 4 while my parents weren’t home one night. I loved every thrilling minute of it. Although my sick twisted mind as a child most likely loved the gore and un-explored side of life, as I’ve grown I’ve found myself not necessarily interested in the gore, but more so the darker side of a story… not the Hollywood happy endings. A big inspiration for the book was from my time as drag queen persona ‘Panache’, or as some knew her ‘Fab’. Eight years in those heels were bound to tell a story, and only now do I fully understand the saying ‘write what you know’. There were moments writing ‘Glitter, Blood & Tears’ that the words just poured out of me. As much as the story is adapted and fiction, there are some very real moments of emotion and experiences in the book which are close to the truth. The story itself is a confronting tale of drag queens, homosexuality and murder. It’s the story of a young gifted man with a knack for performance. A gifted man, whom after a childhood of humiliation and torment finds himself the star of a nightclub – as a drag queen. It’s horrific, sensual and heart wrenching, and I’m sure readers will sympathise and at the same time be appalled with its characters. The book will take it’s readers on a journey of sex, despair, justice, revenge, equality and equity, and combines human nature, emotion, imagination and reality into what I feel is one powerful piece. Any ideas what your next book will be about? Funny you should ask, I have already written the first chapter. Although, since the Fringe World Festival hit town I have been a little preoccupied and should probably get back onto it to strike while the irons hot! ‘Glitter, Blood & Tears’ tells the story of a boy who has a horrific preconceived idea after a series of events, but my second book will touch on conforming to societies ideals, and how just too much conforming just may make someone snap – the ‘snap’ being the big story! ‘Glitter, Blood & Tears’ is available for purchase through Booktopia, Bookdepository and Amazon.com.

Iggy Pop Post Punk Depression For his seventeenth album Iggy Pop has teamed up with Josh Homme and Dran Fertita from Queens of the Stone Age and Artic Monkey’s drummer Matt Helders. Opening track ‘Break Into Your Heart’ is bluesy and mystical, it could almost be a track by The Doors as Iggy promises to get under our skin. ‘Gardenia’ and ‘American Valhalla’ also feature a crisp polished sound and a slow groove, the dark themes continue on ‘In the Lobby’. ‘lead single ‘Sunday’ features some retro ‘70s sounding guitars and clever lyrics. Closing track ‘Paraguay’ starts of quite sedate before Iggy goes to town with a spoken word rant. GW

Elton John Wonderful Crazy Night

Olafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm Trace Frendz

Elton’s got nothing to prove, he’s almost done it all, hits galore, musicals, animated films, and his recent output has been quite serious and artistically ambitious. So here’s an album full of gentle easy going pop tunes with a slight country tinge. It’s pleasant and reminiscent of some of his most successful songs of the 70s. Will it get played more than twice? probably not. It’s not that they’re bad songs, they’re just quite bland songs. So unless you have all of Elton’s previous 32 albums and really want the complete set, pass this one by. GW

This new collaboration between Arnalds and Frahm is so subtle you’ll need to find a quite place to listen to it. Seven tracks of gorgeous, but ever so gentle, piano pieces, each denoted by a time stamp. The first two pieces ’20:17’ and ’21:05’ are simple piano, but things get a little more complex on the third tune ’23:17’. Things turn electronic on ‘00:26’ with cut up notes filtering in and out, while the closing track ’03:06’ is reminiscent of a music box. Very incredibly chilled. GW

Alex Newell – This Aint Over Big vocals and fun vibes and a great party tune Willie Nelson and Cyndi Lauper – Lets Call the Whole Thing Off – a comical track with Nelson and Lauper doing their best to channel Fred and Ginger Benga – Power glitch house and big beats from the dubstep pioneer Motez – Down Like This featuring the brilliant T’kay Maidza on vocals, time to bump and grind Andrew Weatherall – We Count the Stars muted trumpets and cockney accents give this track a decidedly British vibe Panthu du Prince featuring Queens – The Winter Hymn sweet vocals, twining chimes and bunches of beats, quite beautiful Bannoffee – With Her (Chad Valley Remix) this new remix maintains the great vocals and gives the tune a new soundscape Pet Shop Boys – The Pop Kids it sounds like its 1985 (in a good way) Ludovico Einaudi – Elements (Eagles and Butterflies Remix) classical music gets a techno twist Max Richter – Dream 13 (Marconi Union Remix) ethereal dream tune is given an electronic makeover Matt Haimovitz and Christopher O’Riley – Pyramid Song classical take on Radiohead tune

Prins Tomas Principe Del Norte The new record from Scandinavian space disco king Prins Tomas sounds like early Philip Glass or Terry Reilly. These long minimalist ambient tracks slowly build up and allow you to daydream off into oblivion. The tracks are simply labeled ‘A1’, ‘A2’ and then ‘B’ through to ‘H’, leaving you wondering if Tomas will tackle the other two thirds of the alphabet at a later date. The beats really kick in on ‘C’, and ‘E’ is almost a funk groove, the dance vibes building more with each tune in the sequence until ‘H’ is reaches its light techno crescendo. GW

Milwaukee Banks Deep Into the Night The debut record from Melbourne electronic hip-hop duo Milwaukee Banks is impressive. Opening track ‘Too High to Die’ starts off with a simple dark sparse electronic beat and a rap, but a minute and twenty seconds into the track it all changes, as if you’ve suddenly entered a psychedelic trip. ‘The Only One’ features a repetitive smooth vocal that just keeps going, so late into the track do the rap vocals begin, they come as a surprise. ‘Shame on You’ and ‘Never Coming Down’ are smooth RnB but most of this record is cold atmospheric and sparse. Worth repeated listens. GW

Trip-hop was all the rage back in the mid ‘90s, the mix of hip hop, reggae and spare electronica dominated the airwaves. Is trip-hop making a comeback? Some of the genre’s biggest names have new records and there’s also some new bands popping up with a similar sound.

Massive Attack Undisputedly the biggest name in the genre, Massive Attack has a new four track EP ‘Ritual Spirit’ which sees them teaming up with Young Fathers, Roots Manuva and reuniting with Tricky for the first time in 22 years.

Tricky Early on Tricky was featured on Massive Attack’s records before he launched a solo career. His first albums were brilliant but some of the later one’s are a bit dubious. His new album, his sixteenth, is called ‘Skilled Mechanics’.

Ramsey This singer from Los Angeles captures the trip-hop aesthetic perfectly. Check out her tracks on Soundcloud. Her tune ‘Let Me Bleed’ is a mix of distorted beats, pants and haunting vocals. This is an artist to watch.

Haelos New British band Haelos have a dark electronic sound. Their debut album ‘Dark Circles’ is filled with atmospheric soundscapes, a variety of vocals and smooth raps. If you like London Grammar, give these guys a go.

The ladies of Toorak are back with a new friend, new adventures and new drama on the third season of ‘Real Housewives of Melbourne’. I caught up with the queen of courtroom couture Gina Liano as she took time out of her busy schedule to tell us what we can expect from the all new season. What have you been up to since the last season of Real Housewives of Melbourne? “Oh gosh. A lot. I’ve done a role on ‘Neighbours’, I launched an autobiography in April last year, I did a stint on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and then filmed 16 weeks of The Real Housewives, so I’m flat out. I’ve obviously got my shoe range and my clutches and then court – certainly a lot. It’s been a very, very busy time.” Was it easy to slip back into filming Real Housewives of Melbourne with all of these other commitments? “Well, I sort of got eased back into it doing ‘Neighbours’ and ‘Celebrity Apprentice’. I did all of those before I did the new season. It wasn’t so much of an ease, I suppose. It was a pretty hectic time. Doing ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ was really hectic so by the time I got back into Housewives I’d already been filming for six weeks on Celebrity

March 2016

and I’d done five weeks on ‘Neighbours’ so I haven’t really had much downtime at all. It’s sort of become part of my life now.” So what can we expect from the third season of Real Housewives of Melbourne? “This season is… well, it’s hilarious actually. Definitely an explosive season, it will be so compelling to watch. I feel compelled to watch it, I know I’m very close to it but I think there’s so much in it. There’s a lot of girls now so there’s so much happening.” The trailer for the season hints at someone having a baby, a wedding and what seems to be another fight around a dinner table – this time involving Pettifleur… “The format of the show is that each episode you’ll get a gathering of all the girls together at least once, and there’s always an episode towards the middle or the end where we travel together. I think it’s a bit true to life really; there are some people you can travel with and other people that you can’t. You take them better in small doses than large doses and I think what happens at those dinners when we travel is that the tensions going on become quite explosive.” There’s a new girl entering the scene this season – Susie McLean. Did you give her any advice as she came into the group? “I did actually have quite a long chat to her when she came in, just because it is quite confronting doing reality TV. Not just when it goes to air and how it’s edited and how the girls might react to towards each other but also just the exposé… I did talk to her quite a bit about production and the dynamics between the girls, how she feels and how she thinks she might handle herself.

“You know, she’s a mature woman and she’s quite composed and she’s got a good sense of humour. She doesn’t take herself too seriously. She’s quite a likable girl and I’ve been friends with her for a long time… but that doesn’t always translate on camera. I’ve been friends with Lydia for a long time too and some of the other girls but they didn’t necessarily behave in a way I had anticipated. I think Susie was pretty consistent with who she is.” Did you spend any time with the other Housewives between filming? When you weren’t contractually obliged? “Well there wasn’t really much downtime. We film about four/five days a week and one of those days is always with them so we don’t really get much time to catch up. I probably caught up mostly with Gamble and Lydia. Although, Gamble was getting married and she had a lot of preparation prior to the wedding and then she was on her honeymoon so that sort of took her out of the picture for a bit – but I probably spent most time with Lydia.” There’s only a few of you in the current cast who have been there since Season 1. Would you say anyone has changed over the last 3 years or so? “I think Janet’s a little bit calmer. Not that she wasn’t calm but I think she’s maybe not as gossipy or provocative. You’ll see why this season, you’ll see a softer side to her. I think also Jackie – I think you see a softer side of all of us to be honest. What we decided to do this season was involve our families more and let the audience in – I mean it is reality TV. We all agreed to let the audience see a little bit more about our personal lives, our children, you’ll see my PA and me at work and my boys. Leigh Hill Catch Season 3 of Real Housewives of Melbourne at 5:30pm Sundays on Arena.

UK series ‘Cuffs’ airs on Aussie TV.

A powerful new documentary out of the UK follows the lives of queer Muslim drag queens in Britain’s underground scene.

The police drama follows a team of police officers in the coastal city of Brighton as they deal with their fast-paced jobs and complex personal lives.

Narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, the film asks the question: How do gay Muslims reconcile their cultural identity and traditions with their sexuality?

LGBTI representation on our screens continues to grow as

A young gay new recruit Jake Vickers (Jacob Ifan) struggles to fit in with the team in the shadow of his father – The Chief Superintendent. Police Constable Donna Prager (Eleanor Matsuura), an authorized Taser officer, must balance her marriage to artist wife Alice with her high pressure job on the force.

Marta Dusseldorp is returning to our TV screens as determined lawyer Janet King. The character first appeared in the ABC show ‘Crownies’ in 2011 before getting her own spin-off series three years later. Now two more years have passed, and there have been dramatic changes in Janet King’s life.

The eight-part series is set to be the first and final season of ‘Cuffs’, though many fans and actors from the program have criticized the cancellation - launching a petition that garnered over 5,000 signatures to re-sign the program.

In the new series she’s put in charge of a royal commission into gun crime, and some the best characters from the previous series are also along for the ride. The new series is filled with mystery, action and some serious drama. We got a sneak peek at the first episode and can’t wait to see more!

Watch Cuffs on Saturdays at 8:30pm on ABC, or catch up on previous episodes on iView.

“I am a Muslim, I’m British Pakistani and I’m also a drag queen,” says performer Asif Quraishi. Quraishi says they have to fight every day just to be themselves. “I receive constant death threats,” Quraishi continues, “I’ve heard people say my parents should burn in hell for bringing me into the world. Is somebody gonna kill me? There’s a whole community that’s living in Britain that is hidden.” “Now is the time to come out. You’ve got to be big, bold and have balls of steel.” Catch Muslim Drag Queens on Friday 11th March, 9:30pm on ABC2.

TRUMBO (M)

THE DAUGHTER (M)

ALL ABOUT THEM (MA)

Since 1991, Stephen Page, who also cowrote the film, has been artistic director of the leading indigenous dance group – Sydney-based Bangarra Dance Theatre. The choreographer uses dance to tell a very personal story of a young aboriginal man ‘with a foot in each world and a heart in none’. Stephen is now comfortable in the bush as well as at the Opera House, but this hasn’t always been the case. The director’s son, Djali (22 year-old Hunter Page-Lochard) moves through the landscape of his ancestors as well as the urban landscape full of racism, alcoholism and violence. Shot over three weeks on a budget of about $1 million, there’s the occasional touch of humour and an overwhelming positive message in this powerful cinematic experience. On 11 and 12 March, there will be a Q&A with producer John Harvey at Luna Outdoor, Leederville at the 8pm screening.

Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was a highly successful screenwriter in Hollywood when American fears of communist subversion resulted in the major motion picture studios blacklisting screenwriters with past communist affiliations. Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten who was banned from writing because of his beliefs, imprisoned and labelled by powerful conservatives such as John Wayne and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) as being ‘un-American’. Needing money for his family when he was released from prison, Trumbo realised that he could still write screenplays using pseudonyms. After these fictitious writers won two Academy Awards (for Roman Holiday and The Brave One), some of the big names in Hollywood finally saw the injustice and started to ignore the blacklist. This historical moment of political hypocrisy is beautifully recreated and wonderfully acted.

Set in a dying timber town in New South Wales, the film opens with a shot ringing out in a mist-covered valley. Christian (Paul Schneider) has returned home from America after a long absence for his father Henry’s (Geoffrey Rush) wedding to a much younger woman. One of the first people he meets is his childhood friend Oliver (Ewen Leslie) who has just lost his job at the timber mill owned by Henry. Christian gets to know Oliver’s wife Charlotte (Miranda Otto), daughter Hedvig (Odessa Young) and father Walter (Sam Neil) who keeps a menagerie of rescued animals including a duck that Henry has shot. Based on Henrik Ibsen’s play the Wild Duck, Simon Stone’s debut film is intense and impressive. Australia’s best actors deliver snappy dialogue, tension slowly builds to a haunting soundtrack and lyrical cinematography while unsettling ripples of a dark secret test family bonds and friendships.

As the fireworks of Bastille Day explode over the French town of Lille, young criminal lawyer Melodie (Anias Demoustier) visits her singer girlfriend Charlotte (Sophie Verbeeck). Unfortunately Charlotte’s boyfriend, veterinary surgeon Micha (Felix Moati), has just returned home from a trip. When Melodie and Micha’s friendship becomes something more, there is only one thing to do. Most people are familiar with the term ‘ménage a trios’ and there’s probably a good reason why this sexual configuration is referred to in French. While not exclusive to the French, they are particularly good at making films about love triangles. This charmingly playful film has equal parts drama and comedy of errors and the viewer is left guessing where it will all end. All About Them is part of the 2016 French Film Festival which screens from 16 March to 7 April at Cinema Paradiso, Luna on SX and Windsor Cinema.

Beaufort Street Festival just announced the cancellation of the festival. I can already hear people screaming about how their favourite day of the year to walk the streets and get drunk in the sunshine has been taken away from them.

down a street with 150,000 other people, it is understandable that some people decided to avoid the event. That being said, even with the reduced numbers in 2015, the event was a huge success and I am sad to see it go.

In fairness, that’s also one of the main reasons I love Beaufort Street Festival. When else do you get an excuse to get together with everyone you know, sit in the sunshine, explore shops, eat food and drink away the day?

That being said, Beaufort Street Festival does something that not many other events manage to achieve. They make sure I don’t have to choose. As someone who holds Mount Lawley in a special place in their heart, I always want to support the area. The opportunity to celebrate my community, watch live music, see old friends, try new foods, go shopping and do this all while still supporting all of my favourite venues and local businesses is worth its weight in gold.

I know that events such as Beaufort Street give you something so much more than that. The sheer amount of people that descend on the street make

In light of the starkly negative effect Fringe World had on venues, especially across Mount Lawley, I am proud to support an event that that focus on the community they reside in.

you feel surrounded by a community, whether you’re usually a part of it or not. If, like me, you love being surrounded by crowds, the BSF is probably one of your favourite days on the calendar. One of the things that I love about the festival is that it doesn’t take away anything from its community. It encourages every business in the area to get involved. While there are costs associated with licencing, infrastructure, stock and staff, the whole premise of the event is to engage people with Beaufort Street and it does that. Sadly, 2015 was a little quieter than previous years, although this can be attributed solely to 38+ temperatures. When given the opportunity to spend time in a pool, or under your air-con, or sitting in your freezer, rather than wading up and

In fairness, Fringe World is a whole different ball park. In 2014, Fringe World estimated that the total gross visitor spend across the festival was $26,852,728. An event that size is never going to be able to make everyone happy. Not every artists, or patron, not every businesses, and definitely not every local resident.

Australia, and now they can bring that back into a grassroots space. We are so lucky to have people like the Network thinking about us, what we want and what we need and we should be supporting that. Outside of the network there are a host of events that need much more support than they’re getting… Yes, I am pointing a finger at every person who didn’t go to Fairday because they were worried that it would be quiet. We need to get behind our communities and support them, the way that businesses and organisations are supporting us. This is about more than attending a party, or being seen at an event, or getting your picture in the social pages. It’s about supporting the area that you live, it’s about going to your favourite pub when another big event like Fringe World is on. It’s about supporting the businesses that make your community what it is. As summer winds down and so does Perth’s apparent interest in attending events, I ask you to take the loss of Beaufort Street Festival as a positive. See what else the Network has to offer. And go to is all. Check out the other local events like Secret Sounds, go back to your Sunday session bars, and keep your eyes peeled for what else is going on. Continue to engage with your community, because without you and me, there is no community. Alice Mod

But that is exactly what the Beaufort Street Network was about. It was about engaging everyone in their community, making it shine, in making people even more proud to be a part of it. Looking at the first event that the Beaufort Street Network has announced as part of its new events program, a Pizza and Croquet Community Event on April 10, the one thing that has stayed is the undeniable focus on community. They are using local businesses, providing you something different and doing it walking distance from many a backyard. The Beaufort Street Network has done something great by abolishing BSF. They have successfully created one of the biggest street festivals in
