WHY CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS? I’m not sure if I’m good at making friends. Colleagues – sure, acquaintances – got hundreds of them, but true friends are few and far between. Of course if you ask Facebook I currently have 1,379 friends. While I only connect with people I actually know, to call everyone on that list a friend is probably an overstatement. At a time when technology allows us to be the most connected that we’ve ever been, are we the most disconnected we’ve ever been? Often I wonder if we make it hard to create friendships. I recently saw an acquaintance chastised on a social networking group for daring to speak to a younger person. The younger people in the Facebook group felt it was inappropriate for an older person to strike up a conversation with a younger person. Several younger people noted that often when an older person spoke to them, they ended up being hit on. “There’s nothing creepier than having someone 20 years older, hit on you.” And while I understand this sentiment, I hate to break the news but when you’re 40, you’ll still be hit on by people 20 years older than you… and you may also find it creepy to be propositioned by people 20 years younger than you. But why is it our default position to expect that anyone who speaks to us also wants to have sex with us?

Cover girl Mary Lambert’s ‘Heart on my Sleeve’ is up for grabs plus we have Neyo’s ‘Non-Fiction’, The Avener’s ‘The Wanderings of the Avener’, the DVD for ’Pride’ meet and greets for Nana Mouskori & Michael Franti!

On another popular social app, Grindr, we see people with profiles that read “only here for chat” and “don’t speak to me unless you’re between 19 and 23”. Maybe the most enlightening conversation of your life could be with someone who is 26, 36 or even 76 – but you’ll never know. While I don’t have a rolodex filled with close friends, the great friends I do have are not exactly the same age as me, some are much younger, and some are much older than I am. By having friends of different ages I get to discover new things. An older friend introduced me to Keith Jarrett’s Koln Concert (amazing!), while a younger friend taught me the short cuts on some editing software. In turn I’ve shown a younger friend how to put a vinyl record on a turntable and explained Twitter to an older friend.

people Kirby visits many universities to share his wisdom with the public. “This morning in Sydney I took part in the raising of the rainbow flag at the University of New South Wales. The same thing will happen tomorrow at the university of Sydney, for the first time in both universities, but for many years when I’ve come over the Perth, the rainbow flag has been flying outside the University of

Western Australia so that in this sense we’re catching up over here on the east coast with the west coast in that respect.” Universities, one hopes, are at the forefront of thinking when it comes to human rights. But can students expect the same standards once they enter the working world? “There is already law in place for many activities in society to provide regress against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity, and increasingly intersex status in federal legislation. In fact the reference to intersex status in federal legislation in Australia, is, I think a first in the world. But getting the provisions in legislation and getting respect and equality for people in all forms of employment and in society is sometimes a bridge too far for some people, and that’s where education, and discussion and media attention and ultimately legal decisions become important.” Kirby said.

Former High Court Judge The Hon Michael Kirby has been keeping himself busy since stepping down from the bench in 2009. As well as leading an United Nations Human Rights Council inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea, he also appearing at a multitude of speaking engagements. Graeme Watson caught up with Kirby ahead of his talks in Perth.

However, not all countries have legal protections in place for LGBTI people. Kirby has expertise on the state of legal protections in the Asia-Pacific region. He explained that many of the anti-gay laws currently in place are remnants of British-colonial law, something which many nations are proud to have as a part of their history. “There’s a lot to be proud of the colonial and British legal system and tradition. For example the very strong tradition of uncorrupted judges is something that countries of the British empire, and now the Commonwealth have inherited and this is not a matter of condemning every aspect of the legal system, but one aspect of the British legal system which was exported to each and every country over which the Union Jack ever flew, was the provision of the anti-gay criminal law. In India it’s section 377 of the Indian penal code, in Singapore it’s section 377 capital A, and likewise in Malaysia and this reinforcement of social stigma and sometimes of

religious attitudes by actual legal provisions which can be misused oppressively is a leftover from the colonial era. The British got rid of such laws themselves in 1969, but they linger on in many other countries. In fact in 42 of the 54 countries of the Commonwealth of nations, the criminal law is still heavily discriminating against gay people.”

At Curtin University, Kirby will be discussing the rights of older LGBTI Australians, a social issue that is rarely given priority in public discussion. “One of the issues in this area relating to older people is that a proportion of older people are going to be gay people, LGBT people and they are going to begin entering and have already started entering aged facilities, and homes and care and community living and they will not be silent as earlier generations have been about their sexuality. They will take openness as a natural part of their living. This will cause concern in some places, in some aged care facilities which are religious there may be difficulties, although I have to say in Australia, that has not been a major issue and most aged facilities, religious or secular have been supportive of the federal government’s guidelines of LGBTI citizens in aged care facilities. So we just have to address the issue of sexuality and sexual expression and affection in aged care facilities given that the cohort of people who are coming into them are going to be after the generations that kept all that matter to themselves and were silent about it.” Kirby said. Social isolation can be an issue for older LGBTI people, as well as in the straight community. “Old age is sometimes a lonely journey and if you don’t have a partner, there’s no doubt that old age is a harder journey. Until now in Australia, the law, society and conventions have been loaded against LGBT people and that is why even for those people who don’t see an urgent need to get married. Marriage equality is a fundamental human rights issue.” Kirby himself recently celebrated an anniversary with his long term partner. “Last week I celebrated 46 years with my partner Johan Van Vloten, and I hope to indicate a message to young LGBT people that it is perfectly possible, with a bit of luck and hard work in life in Australia to make a success of it, and that one should never accept being put down because of sexual orientation or gender identity.” Michael Kirby is speaking at a lecture entitled ‘Older and Bolder, Transforming the Rights and Well-Being of Older LGBTI Australians’ presented in conjunction with GRAI (GLBTI Rights in Aging) at UWA at the Business School on Hackett Drive, on Thursday March 26th at 6pm. Mr Kirby will also delivering a presentation at Curtin University’s Centre for Human Rights Education. In his talk Mr Kirby will discuss the origins of legal opression of LGBTI people in Austraia and our region. 6pm Friday 27th March at the Tim Winton Lecture Theatre. Everyone’s favourite wacky air hostess Pam Ann took some time out from her busy schedule to chat to OUTinPerth ahead of her appearance at Connections Nightclub.

What’s new with Pam Ann since we spoke last year?

Will there be any other airline staff with you this time around?

Nothing really I am still trying to help PERTH coastguard try and find that fucking missing MH370. What is new, I’m dating an Asian called PING and he eats my pussy like it’s dim sum on Sunday and when I tell him to go deeper with the tongue I scream ‘FIND THE PLANE’

Airline staff with me? Well I know you’re trying to find some in the Indian Ocean?

You’ve sold out theatres across the world, what made you decide to perform in more intimate spaces this tour? I can touch people inappropriately. You’ve been in the travel game for a while now. How do you keep your material fresh? I talk about all of my own travel and life experiences, what’s current in the news twist it and BOOM you have a new show!

What’s the latest goss in the air travel game? The Arabs are taking over all I smell is fuel and money when I am in Dubai. Emirates wash their planes with fuel and de ice with Dom Perignon Do you have any hot tips for aspiring flight attendants? Well for Virgin crew I suggest starting as a stripper, work your way up the pole to the trolley.

Who needs to go on Virgin Galactic to experience space when I can get two black men over, turn off the lights and they can move me around my bedroom. I do wish Lady Gaga all the best ….I hope she doesn’t burn up on her way back to earth!?!? Or not!!! Who better than Pam Ann to design the first space-flight attendant uniform? Any ideas? Braniff Airlines nailed it back in the 60’s. I would replicate that uniform. Pam Ann: ‘Queen of the Sky’ is flying into Connections Nightclub On March 13th, boarding commences 7.30pm. Leigh Hill

You’re the Queen of the Sky, of this we are certain. What about outside of our atmosphere? Will we see Pam Ann on a Virgin Galactic flight?

people rehearsal room. “What do you think I am? Am I a butch gay? They say no.” she laughed. In ‘The Importance of Being Miriam’ Margolyes will take on some iconic characters including Oscar Wilde’s Lacy Bracknell and Jane Austen’s Lady Catherine de Bourgh as well as including her own “dirty stories”. Margolyes was inspired to do so after an appearance on ‘The Graham Norton Show’. “For some reason I began talking about various sexual encounters that I’d had, which, in a lady of 73, it could be regarded as slightly distasteful.” she laughed. As always, her priority is entertainment. “I like making people laugh and because I think sex is funny, certainly the sex that I’ve had is funny, I enjoy telling people about it and seeing them laugh.” There are also some Australian influences. Margolyes’ partner of 47 years is Australian, making the country a big part of her life long before becoming a citizen two years ago, an experiences which she says “My enjoyment is enhanced by learning about a new country and all the new influences that that will bring. I think Australia is a remarkable place that’s still in transition, that’s the wonderful thing. It hasn’t stopped being Australia, it’s developing and all sorts of things are happening. Hopefully there’ll be a change of government. [Laughs]”

Miriam Margolyes is many things: a star of stage and screen, an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to drama, and as of 2013, an Australian citizen. Many will be familiar with her as Professor Sprout in the ‘Harry Potter’ or Aunt Prudence on ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’. I caught up with a very highspirited Margolyes over the phone on the third day of rehearsals for her upcoming show, ‘The Importance of Being Miriam’.

“It’s fairly early days but it’s great fun and I’m enjoying it. I’m scared, of course, as I always am when I’m starting a new show but you know, it’s fun.” she said. For the show, Margolyes is reuniting with pianist John Martin, who she worked with for her widely popular production ‘Dickens’ Women’. They are being directed by Peter Adams, who has also devised shows for Professor Brian Cox and David Attenborough. Margolyes assured me that the team were having a grand time in rehearsals, and that most of the team were gay, excluding Martin. “I am, I hope, speaking to a gay magazine, otherwise it’s a bit irrelevant!” she laughed. “Funny thing is, you sound gay. I don’t know if you know that… I can’t explain what it is. I don’t. I don’t sound gay, you do.” Margolyes has long been open about her sexuality, in fact it was her partner who originally compelled her to come to Australia. I shared with Margolyes that although I sound gay I’m not sure whether or not I look especially gay. She seemed to relate. “Well I’m so old now that it’s kind of irrelevant [Laughs] I’m trying to think what I am if I have to describe myself in gay terms, and apart from just being an old bag, I don’t know what I would say. I don’t know- because I don’t think I’m terribly butch, but on the other hand I’m not terribly femme either, I think I’m in the middle, like you are.” she turned to her fellows in the

Bookings closing soon

Also working on the show is costume designer Marion Boyce, who Margolyes worked with in ABC’s ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’. “I was thrilled when she said yes. I don’t normally enjoy television particularly but I have enjoyed ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’ very much. Luckily the ABC now realise what a jewel they have, and there will be more.” ‘Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries’ gained a cult following overseas, prompting the series to gain more acclaim locally. The reluctance to embrace local content is something Margolyes said she would like to see change. “I think that’s one of the things that I would legislate. That you must have more Australian content on television, and much less American and British content.” Before Margolyes returned to rehearsal, she imparted some wisdom about being openly gay in the public eye. “I don’t know what I gain from being open. I think I gain the comfort of not having to hide. I wouldn’t like to have to hide. I don’t think that it is wise, always, to tell everybody that you’re gay. It depends who you tell. From my own point of view, I feel comfortable and I just always have told people who I am and what my sexuality is. If they don’t like it, tough shit.” ‘The Importance of Being Miriam’ is at the State Theatre Centre April 7th-11th. Tickets available from www.beingmiriam.com.au Sophie Joske

music Martha Wash started her career as backing singer with the legendary queer singer Sylvester and went on to be half of the duo The Weather Girls, who also recorded under the moniker Two Tons of Fun. From the million selling ‘It’s Raining Men’ to being the voice of C+C Music Factory and Black Box in the ‘90s to her own successful solo career Miss Wash has been taking us to the dancefloor for decades. Five time Grammy nominee Linda Clifford scored a big hit when disco was at its height with her cover of ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’

together of some of us ladies and it wound up being Evelyn, Linda and myself.” Wash said the trio have long standing friendships and have always appreciated each other’s work. When asked how long they’ve all known each other one of the ladies quips “One hundred and forty three years!” before they all agree that their friendship has been going for over 35 years. Clifford shared that working with Wash and King is not really work, it’s just a lot of fun. “I think that this is really spectacular because not only are we working together as friends and as a trio, but we still have our individual careers, you know, we’re each doing our own thing as well.” Clifford said.

“We enjoyed each other’s company, we had a good time, we met each other, all races, creeds, no matter what it was and we all got along- if we could keep that going- that’s why ‘Show Some Love’ is very important to all three of us.” The First Ladies of Disco project is being released on Purple Rose Records, Martha Wash’s own label. The forthright singer decided to set up her own label when she discovered no label was interested in signing her as an artist despite her decades of success. “It’s Purple Rose Records. There was no label that was going to sign me at the time, and I still wanted to put out music, so I decided to make my own label.” Wash said. “It’s been growing… I put out my last album, ‘Something Good’ on my label, ‘Show Some Love’ from First Ladies of Disco is coming out on my label and I’m working with some

With all the negativity that’s out there, whether it’s politics, racially motivated or whatever, we wanted to do something that everyone could really relate to and feel good about.” from the musical ‘Sweet Charity’. Her song ‘Runaway Love’ has been a constant favorite for club DJs. Recently the track ‘I Just Wanna Wanna’ got a new lease on life after it was featured in the movie ‘The Paperboy’.

“So we’re keeping busy that way but I love working with these ladies. They’re so professional, and it’s not working, actually. It’s just getting together and having fun so I love it, I absolutely love it.

Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King is the voice behind hits like ‘Shame’ and the RnB classic ‘Love Come Down’. More recently she’s collaborated with San Francisco based musician Miguel Migs.

“I try to sing some songs that are uplifting to people and this was one song that we felt that everybody could relate to because it’s about being able to show love to everyone. We’re living in a crazy world right now where there’s a lot of hate going on and we want to show positivity to people and still be able to have fun with the music and have a good time as well.” Wash said.

Now these three amazing singers have teamed up to form The First Ladies of Disco and their debut song “Show Some Love’ is being released this month. Martha Wash explained how the collaboration came about. “We had worked with each other off and on over the years. The beginning of this ‘First Ladies of Disco’ in fact was brought about by a book by the same name written by author James Arena. “What happened was we wound up doing this big show with some of the ladies he had written about in the book. We did this show together and it came out fantastic and we just decided to kind of move forwards and put a group

‘Show Some Love’, the trio’s first release was written by Zack Adams, the writer and producer behind Martha Wash’s recent album.

Linda Clifford notes that she appreciates the track’s positive vibe, “With all the negativity that’s out there, whether it’s politics, racially motivated or whatever, we wanted to do something that everyone could really relate to and feel good about.” Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King shared that she likes the song because it aims to bring people of different backgrounds together, something she feels has been lost in recent years. “I think it’s also to bring us back to where we used to be, because we, if you noticed, we, back in the day used to have a great time together. We all enjoyed going out. Now, we can’t go out without fear. We can’t go out as entertainers without fear… we’re just trying to bring everyone back to where we used to be.” King said.

Canadian songwriters and working with some music that’s going to come out on my label.” Wash is clearly enjoying owning her own label and being in the driving seat, she notes that more artists are choosing an independent route of releasing music. Clifford and King also share that they are embracing the artistic freedom away from a major label. “We’d like to sing our own songs, and we’d like to learn how to write our own music and produce and collaborate with others. We want to learn more. So we’re trying to basically let them know that we can do this on our own if not with someone else.” King said. Wash shares that the First Ladies of Disco project might expand in the future to include other artists from the era, and a tour is also in the works. “We’re setting some things up now,” Clifford said, “So we will go out as the First Ladies of Disco and then of course with our individual programs as well. So we’re anxious to get out there and put some new songs together and to do our own thing!” First Ladies of Disco ‘Show Some Love’ is released on March 25th. More Than Survival:

feature Since enacting its controversial “gay propaganda” laws in 2013, Russia has attracted controversy for its treatment of the LGBTI community. In December last year Human Rights Watch published a report entitled ‘License to Harm: Violence and Harassment Against LGBT People and Activists in Russia’, based on interviews with 78 LGBT people who had experienced violence and discrimination in the country. For Perth resident Victor Swarze, these developments are just a recent manifestation of a hostile social climate that was once his norm. Raised in Moscow, Victor first became aware of his sexuality at age seven, a realisation that came hand in hand with the suspicion that he would not fit in to Russian society. “As I grew older, I began understanding, especially hearing homophobic comments from people and witnessing homophobia in the society and being further and further indoctrinated in Christianity, I was taught that it’s something negative, that it’s sinful, perverted, abominable. So I tried to silence it in me.” However, Victor was unable to keep his identity hidden for long. In his first year of university, his family discovered he was gay after reading his private phone messages. “My father was furious. He basically beat me up and threatened me, threatened that he would do something to the person that I was interested in. I kinda had to cave in and hide again, until I finally moved out at nineteen.”

Perth psychology student Victor Swarze

Victor also experienced numerous incidents of homophobic violence. The first was in his first year of university, when he was physically and verbally abused by classmates. “I went to the admin to talk about it and was just basically told nothing, and no action was taken, nothing at all.” He said. The incident proved to be indicative of a common attitude towards homophobic violence, as he discovered in 2010. continued on next page

Victor was walking down the street with a group of friends. Seeing that the street was deserted, himself and his male friend decided to hold hands. Within ten minutes, the group was attacked by three people. “We were attacked from three different directions with the fourth being the road so we couldn’t actually run there. The first attacker knocked down one of the girls, he basically ran towards her and kicked her in the upper body… She fell down immediately. The second one rushed to me and hit me in the face, knocking my glasses off.” Fortunately, Victor was carrying pepper spray and was able to subdue the attackers. The group contacted the police at a nearby railway station. “The police came in about half an hour, forty minutes and when they saw us they cackled at us. I asked the police officers if they could walk with me to where we were assaulted because my glasses were there, and I can’t see without them.” After one of his friends helped Victor to retrieve his glasses, they were made to pay the officers for making a “false call”. In 2011, Victor moved to Perth, where he has been studying psychology for the last three years. After suffering from anxiety and depression since the age of 14, he said that the move allowed him to begin to recover. “I changed dramatically. I can go out without being afraid. I can go on the streets without fearing. Back in Russia for many years I was actually truly scared to go outside. It crippled my social life… This fear, it didn’t leave completely, I think that it will stay with me for very long, it’s a visceral thing. But now it stays more as a memory, as a reminder, as a phantom.” It was this experience that inspired him to study psychology. “I just thought that with all my experience, knowing what depression is, knowing what anxiety is firsthand I could just bring some help to people suffering it. Because it’s one thing when you learn these things from books, you have a theoretical understanding. But when you have actually experienced all of it, it’s much easier to empathize and to find the fitting words that would actually help.” He is happily in a relationship, and was hoping to apply for a relationship visa at the end of his studies. However, after both his university fees and the cost of the visa were raised significantly, he is now hoping to gain a protection visa. Since the “gay propaganda” law passed in 2013, being openly gay is not only a risk for suffering discrimination and violence, but potentially also incarceration. Victor may be unable to inform his 13 year old sister that he is gay. “Technically, I mean that’s your direct propaganda, I am telling an underage person that I am gay and trying to force someone underage to respect me and view me as a positive individual. That’s what the society considers to be propaganda.”

Victor visibly lit up when he talked about his younger sister. “You wouldn’t think that a thirteen year old person can give much moral and psychological support to a grown up adult, I mean we live in different worlds. Moreover there are so many things that I’m not allowed to tell her. But still she actually manages to bridge these gaps between us and to still support me and to give me the family warmth that I lacked for so many years when I was young. What I didn’t have, she gives me now. So that is a tremendous achievement on her part. I greatly respect her for her ability. She’s a really good little girl, trust me.” “I have this fear that she will be indoctrinated in the homophobic culture. That she will be brought up to be like the others but at the same time, I have a very good connections with her and I am very close with her and I know that she is a good person.” He explained. “I have faith in her. And while I can’t tell her I am gay, what I can do, and what I do is I can ridicule the Russian aggression, I can ridicule Russian homophobia. Laughter is a very strong weapon and that’s the weapon I use to make sure that she doesn’t accommodate to these negative views and these negative values.” Since moving to Perth, Victor has been able to live as an openly gay man without fear of violence. It’s a state of being many of us are lucky to take for granted. In Russia, many LGBT people remain closeted for survival. For Victor, a return to his home country would not only mean a restriction of his personal freedoms but a return to an atmosphere of anxiety and paranoia. Victor fears that the homophobic climate in Russia has worsened since he moved. Many believe that the “gay propaganda” law has given the population legal justification for violence and discrimination for both authorities and vigilante groups. Since the law passed, police raids on gay venues have increased. “Thanks to the new law against gay propaganda, the police have an excuse of raiding a gay venue under the law, they can say that there may be underage individuals in the club. And they will raid and you can see that the social life of the community is constantly under threat.” “If I am forced to go back there I just don’t know how long I will last. What I do know is that after a short while I will not be able to function like a normal human being. I will not be able to casually come out of the house. I will not be able to have a decent work. I will not be able to maintain the same quality of life. It will not be wise for me to be openly gay. But I don’t think that I could go back in the closet the way I used to. It’s just been too long. I’ve been out for too long. I can’t cram myself and my personality back in the closet. It simply won’t fit.” Sophie Joske Image: Paddy Then

OUTinPerth

March 2015

Izaac Bukley and Paul Baines have been elected as WA’s new representatives to the National Association of People Living with HIV Australia (NAPWHA). OUTinPerth caught up with the new reps and found out a little about them both ahead of their community forum later this month.

Izaac Bukley Tell us a little about yourself? I am 25, creative, energetic, social, insightful, and caring. I have a fair bit of traveling experience. I lived in the UK for around a year and a half. Having lived in New Zealand for sixteen years I grew up not just in a beautiful city, in a beautiful land, but I was around beautiful people, and this encouraged me, to explore my surroundings, and get to know what I like to do.

What do you hope to achieve as a state representative for NAPWHA?

Since my diagnosis six years ago, my family, friends, partners and my creativity have been my strengths for taking care of my health. At first I felt defeated. At first, and for a long time afterwards, I felt I was perceived as a danger so I convinced myself, and accepted that I would always be a danger, infectious, and a threat. Because of that influence of thought I slowed right down, and took things at a day by day While completing a first year diploma in Fine pace. Now with more of a need for independence Arts in 2008 I took mixed media sculpture as my I have begun to plan ahead, to manage my health primary mode of expression. Combining elements physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to of me, and ingredients from around me to create overcome ill-informed opinions. works of art. The making of these objects can be quite laborious but the dreaming process of each I am passionate about bringing people together, work is very therapeutic, and a lot of the time is so making connections here and there, however very meditative, sometimes stressful. diverse those people may be, to stand together and read from the same page is my goal. If a connection I am close to my family, and I like to keep in touch can be made, I feel this world would become a with them regularly. I used to be a social butterfly more cohesive and collaborative place to live. As in my school days, but living and working out a state representative for the PLHIV community I here in the wild world as an adult, has been aim to build alliances, to share knowledge, to raise somewhat of a challenge. I have my close friends awareness of what it means to be HIV+, and to though, and I have my social circles of which I am equalise the positives and the negativities. eternally grateful. There is still a lot of fear around the word AIDS, I am a Committee Member of the Bears Perth, so I would like to help others within the LGBTIQ within that position I have responsibilities for the community and the wider community see that HIV club, and an opportunity to help build a strong is not AIDS. network of confident men. The fear around that association are so damaging to our sense of belonging, and so limiting to our chances of creating and sustaining strong friendships, falling in love, being accepted in our own families and our communities as equal.

Paul Baines Tell us a little about yourself? Born in WA, I spent the majority of my teens and early adult years living here in Perth and it was here that I was diagnosed with HIV. I have been living and dealing with that diagnoses for over 17 years. I returned to Perth 5 years ago, after a decade on the East Coast, primarily living in Melbourne were I had involvement with Living Positive Victoria (then PLWHA Victoria) and was the Vice-President of the organisation for several years. I had the pleasure of attending AIDS 2014, the international conference held in Melbourne last year. It reignited an energy that was strong and focused within the first decade of my diagnosis, which for many reasons I retreated from. The reigniting of this focus and energy means that I have become a more present and actively engaged participant with the HIV community within Western Australia. The conference allowed me to develop an enhanced understanding that there are so many battles still being fought domestically and internationally for positive people and as a member of the global positive community I want to stand tall and proud of my status and do what I can to assist and make a change in our worlds.

What do you hope to achieve as a state representative for NAPWHA? My new found drive and energy and has created a momentum of positive involvement within the HIV community within Western Australia and Australia. As a leader and agent for change I hope to provide a voice and a point of action for all of the various positive communities present here in WA. Collectively we have much in common, much more than just HIV. Stigma and discrimination is something that the majority of PLHIV have experienced at one point or another and is one of the things I hope to have an effect on. Those that are able to take a stand against this need to feel empowered to do so – I feel that only by taking that stand and dealing with stigma and discrimination head on will we bring about a change for all positive people.

health to stand by its commitments to the Melbourne Declaration which directly refers to establishing demonstration trials that provide access to PrEP, fast-tracking TGA approval and offering Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) funding of PrEP for high risk groups.

What if there was a pill you could take daily to reduce your risk of getting HIV, but duetogovernmentregulations, itcouldn’tbe accessed in Australia?

There has been plenty of research done overseas and in Australia to test if PrEP actually works. America has approved its use and the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) recommended its use for gay (and other homosexually active) men.

You might think, “WTF?!” You might question why this was the case. You might think there was a good reason for this. Perhaps you might simply wonder how long it would take until this pill was made available.

Well, it comes down to time and money: a TGA submission costs too much for any single organisation; and Gilead Pharmaceuticals, the company that owns a patent on Truvada, has only just clarified that they are willing to provide support for it.

For those who haven’t heard, this pill exists and is called PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis). PrEP is a type of medication called Truvada that is already used in Australia to treat HIV. The issue is, the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA) that controls what we as Australians can or cannot use as “medicine”, has only approved Truvada to be used to treat HIV, not prevent it.

So, why is Australia behind the times?

While the WA AIDS Council (WAAC) has released a position statement on PrEP which is largely supportive of the idea, the Council is not taking the important steps to see PrEP become available in Western Australia. M Clinic encourages WAAC

In the absence of readily available Truvada for PrEP in Western Australia, some are choosing to purchase it from overseas. This is possible with a prescription provided by a doctor where they request the drug “off-label” i.e. for a use that the TGA doesn’t currently approve it for. The Australasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM), AIDS Council of NSW (ACON) and Positive Life NSW have released information sheets on how to access PrEP in Australia from overseas suppliers. M Clinic is thrilled about this development, however these documents don’t list WA specific referrals for accessing PrEP. This is a concern as some may go to their local doctor and be refused PrEP due to lack of awareness by the practitioner, or worse, be prescribed for PrEP without HIV testing and counselling on adherence, precautions and monitoring. Adherence i.e. how often the medication is taken, is a massive factor in how effective the pill is. Current recommendations suggest daily dosing is required – any less and you may not be as protected as you think you are. Tenofivor, one of the drugs used in Truvada, is linked to a number of common side effects (vomiting, diarrhoea) and in rare cases acute kidney damage. Getting a prescription from a doctor that is knowledgeable about PrEP is paramount in ensuring you are provided with the right precautions, maintain a steady supply of Truvada and undergo important monitoring for kidney dysfunction. If you are HIV positive without knowing, and were to commence PrEP assuming you were negative, you run the risk of developing resistance to drugs used in Truvada which could limit your HIV treatment options. This is why HIV testing prior to commencing PrEP is so important. Condoms are still a big part of preventing HIV infection, as well as other sexually transmissible infections (STI) such as Gonorrhoea and Syphilis which PrEP doesn’t protect you against. However, we continue to see new HIV notifications despite condoms being readily available. What does this tell us? There are barriers to condom use for those who don’t use them routinely and they should have the option to access PrEP because we know it can reduce transmission. PrEP is not for everyone. It currently involves a serious commitment to taking the medication on a daily basis with the risk of developing side effects. However, for those who feel they need it, or want to explore it as an option, information should be readily available. Watch this space…M Clinic is developing its own WA specific fact sheets on PrEP which should be released in the next few weeks. In the meantime, join the conversation and tell us what you think. SCULPTURE BY THE SEA

This year’s Sculpture by the Sea includes the work of a unique artist, Addam, who is experienced in sculpture and fashion and takes inspiration from the structural. Addam spoke to us ahead of the opening of Sculpture by the Sea in March. What’s been your inspiration for this work? The inspiration for this work has been my exploration of my sense of place, my cultural overlap between Egypt and Australia. Central to my memories the Spinifex was always present. I found a visual correlation between the structure of the spinifex and the dynamic patterns and rhythms in Islamic Arabesque art and architecture. The shadows created represent the ephemeral trace left by the spinifex. In 2009 we spoke to you about your work for StyleAID creating architectural accessories. How has your art developed since then? This is an extension of my work from then as I have continued with the same concept). My art has mostly progressed in scale – I have increased it over time. I’ve always seen my work being able to be translated from the wearable, to larger sculptural pieces, to architectural scale.

How different are the forms of fashion and sculpture? I don’t think they are very different for me, as I feel my work intertwines both bespoke fashion and sculpture when I’m creating wearable pieces; the difference is scale and conscious consideration is given to the functionality of the piece; you’ve got to able to wear it. I aim to create timeless sculptural pieces, whether they are large or wearable, that can be appreciated as a statement piece for many years to come. What are you hoping people will take away from your work at Sculpture by the Sea? I hope they see the beauty in the spiritual geometry; it’s an abstract piece, so it’ll resonate with each individual differently. I also hope those viewing it will have an appreciation as to how much work goes into a piece like this.

COMMUNITY

Is this your first work for Sculpture by the Sea? Yes it is and it’s been a journey. I am excited to see the final sculpture come alive on site with the sun, sand and sea. It has been a challenge, however I have learned a lot in the process. Have sculpture and fashion always been twin passions for you? Yes they’re both passions of mine as for me they are intertwined. When I frock up I consider my own fashion sense as quite sculptural, with my cut, texture and layer choices. And in terms of objects, I love beautiful adornment and the sense of pleasure and positive emotional reaction you get when viewing it; whether it be a memento /souvenir saturated with memories or a sculpture that you just love for whatever reason. Sculpture by the Sea returns to Cottesloe Beach from March 6th to 23rd. More information available at www.sculpturebythesea.com

Let’s talk about poetry. When did you first start writing? I think I was always writing poetry. I started writing lyrics when I was about 8, poetry came soon after that, when I was about 9. To do actual spoken word and performance poetry didn’t really start until I was about 18. What was it like the first time you did spoken word? The first time I did it, it was for a slam. The nature of slam poetry is that it’s a competition, you get arbitrary scores for your art, which some people have a problem with. Actually, for me, I’m really competitive so it lit this fire beneath me to create the best work that I could, because I’m competitive and because I wanted to create. People loved it and the culture of slam poetry is very vibrant and loud so people are cheering for you during the middle of your poem, which isn’t like normal poetry readings where you sip on tea and you’re quiet and you golf clap, but for spoken word it’s loud and if people like what you’re doing they’re going to let you know. It’s one year on from the Grammys, how do you reflect back on that? It’s kind of insane. My life is insane and I don’t know what I did to deserve the things that I’m doing but I’m just going to try not to fuck it up. I’m just so excited about what I do. But the Grammys were just like this moment in my life that I felt like everything that I’ve worked for

was for that moment and it was really emotional and it was everything that I’ve ever wanted to do. Come on! These were bucket list goals all at once: Perform at the Grammys, be nominated for a Grammy, how about a platinum hit? Perform with Madonna! Stick up for gay people! How did doing Same Love come about? It was kind of because of spoken word. Spoken word and hip hop and rap music are closely related. I had a friend who actually sings on White Wall and she was very supportive of my work and a very kind person and at the time in my poetry I was exploring being both a Christian and a lesbian and was feeling sort of like I didn’t belong in either realm. My gay friends were like “why are you continuing to go to a church that doesn’t like you?” or associated with a religion that doesn’t care for you, and people in the Christian community would ask “how can you be gay and still be a Christian?” and I’d be like “How can you be a bitch and still be a Christian?”. So I was exploring all of that in my poetry. Macklemore had been working on this song and my friend reached out and said Mary, you’d be perfect for this song! It was kind of a last resort when they called me up. I’d never met them before. They were like we’re just gonna send this to you, you have 2 hours then we’ll

see you in the studio tonight to see what you’ve got. So I took a shot of tequila and I was like “BUSINESS”. Then I wrote the hook. How do you feel today about that balance between Christianity and sexuality? I still identify as a Christian and I still identify as a lesbian. I think the Christian community has some retribution to make for the gay and lesbian world, and even still there’s a documentary coming out called ‘Love Vs Hate’, but it’s from the Christian right, saying the gay community hates Christian people. People are really angry. I grew up Pentecostal and I had a lot of people around me saying “You’re going to hell” and “You’re a sinner”. Even my close friends would say “we love you, we just don’t want to see you go to hell”. Which is super misguided and awful and no one should ever go through that, but at least I understand the intention and the intention is love. I do believe there is love in the messaging, at least from the Pentecostal side. They would say like “love your gay friends! Just don’t partake in it!” I think it’s a spiritual journey and I don’t believe in listening to some dude telling me what the bible is or what Christianity is. Tell me about recording your album:

to be a politician and I wanted to change the world and I thought legislature would be the way to change the world and I’ve come to find that pop culture is a really good way to have a large impact. When I did Same Love, it really taught me that with vulnerability and intention and thoughtfulness in creating music you can create an impact. You touch on things we don’t talk about enough in society: mental illness, sexual assault. I don’t know what the answer is but I know I want to be a part of the solution through vulnerability and that’s my goal. I guess it’s conversation right? We just have to talk about that stuff, we just have to talk about it in the right ways… it’s really important to just make it more visible. Instead of just watching it on the news, talking about it in our daily lives. It reminds me of when you were in elementary school, you know when you’re talking to your friends at a sleepover, you’re telling them your secrets, you’re telling them everything and it feels awesome because you’re learning about this person and I never lost that hunger. I have this insatiable hunger for connection and I’m just trying to do that on a wide scale when it comes to sexual violence or mental illness or body image or gay rights, I care so deeply about it because it directly affects me. I think the world is hurting and I’d like to be the band aid. Graeme Watson

It was fun! I was really excited to make a pop album because I had originally intended

A FEAST FOR THE EYES Black Swan State Theatre Company’s upcoming play ‘Dinner’ has a unique premise: it is set over the course of one dinner party, in real time. No scene changes, no leaps in time, just satirical social commentary complete with chic costumes, a waiter and real food. We (OUTinPerth editorial staff Graeme Watson and Sophie Joske) felt we should join in the intrepid spirit of ‘Dinner’ by joining cast members Steve Turner and Rebecca Davis at Bivouac for a meal.

After setting our respective smartphones on the table to record the interview, the conversation quickly turned to how theatre, too, is adapting to modern times. “Styles of acting are changing all the time, and approaches to and techniques of how to get into a character or how to create a character, how to explore a story, there’s

different ways and different processes, but ultimately it’s the same thing.” Turner said as he perused the menu. That said, the paper script remains firmly in its place as an acting tool. “You don’t see anyone with their iPad and a highlighter” Watson said. “No,” Davis laughed. “Maybe for the next generation that come through.”

feature really current topic but we can’t actually stage anything about that until a year later.” Davis said. It’s a challenge for both playwrights and theatre companies who program a season up to a year in advance. There was a brief interlude in the chatter as the party ordered food. The mezze board, complete with pickles and hummus for Davis, raw zucchini pasta for Watson, calamari for Turner and gnocchi for myself. Soon, the conversation turned to satire and whether this a difficult genre for an actor? “I think what I’ve found, particularly with this play, is to approach it with a real sense of honesty and truth, initially… If you go into a play thinking ‘I’m going to play it as comedy or satire’ then you’ve kind of killed the comedy, because you’ll overplay it. So I think if you come in with a sense of truth and honesty and simplicity, then you find little moments that come through that are very very funny. I think the play is very well written, I like that too. So there are some really poignant moments.” Davis said. “I think the big danger with staging satire is allowing yourself to not project onto the audience. Just stage it and let them take it as is, and not be worried that they won’t accept that as satire.” Turner said. “In those moments where you’re mid-scene and you chuck your script to go and do something physical you wouldn’t want to throw you iPad across the room.” Turner chimed in. In this modern age where trends move faster than fingers can tweet, artistic forms including theatre are continuing to have to prove their relevance to an audience with

more entertainment options than ever. “There are lots of great contemporary playwrights writing great current plays on current topics, but nothing that reactive, immediately because you have to go through the playwright process, you have commissions and that sort of thing. So for a big company, you kind of have to pre-empt some things… Sometimes there might be a

Both Turner and Davis are experienced in performing classic and new theatrical works, having previously appeared in Black Swan State Theatre Company’s production of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. Turner explained that when performing a new work, there are no previous performances or the kind of catalogue of interpretations that come with a classic work, so it’s a chance for an actor

to have a truly fresh take. “With a new work, there’s nothing to compare it to, it’s brand new writing. It’s kind of liberating in a way. It’s a little bit scary, but it’s great because there’s not this weight of expectation. There’s a different expectation, of course” Turner said. Another element of ‘Dinner’ that makes it unique is its creative team. “We’ve got Trent Suidgeest lighting dinner so you’re guaranteed a beautifully lit set.” Turner said. “He’s designed the set as well, it’s stunning.” There’s renowned local composer Ash GibsonGrieg on sound design and composition. For the costume design, Black Swan State Theatre Company has joined the forces of India Mehta and local designers. “It’s the first time they’ve brought in local fashion designers to actually design a piece for the players. It’s brilliant, I love it, and more should be done like that.” Davis said. The lavish set and costumes are set to bring out one of the fundamental themes of the play, which Turner explained “is looking at the notion of excess and consumption in society... the aggregation of social and economic responsibility for society, class structure and all that kind of thing.” If this dinner was anything to go by, ‘Dinner’ will certainly be a production like no other. ‘Dinner’ is at the State Theatre Centre from March 14th to 29th. Takes Off Australian DJ and Musician Alison Wonderland is releasing her highly anticipated debut album ‘Run’ on March 20th. She sat down for breakfast with OUTinPerth ahead of the release. “I wrote most of the record in Los Angeles, so I was inspired a lot by that, I spent a good 7 months there last year back and forth, I wrote it about the music industry over there and the people I was meeting. I was people watching, I was observing things. I was quite naïve when I was going there because I didn’t really know much about the bigger side of the music industry and the people there, it’s about falling in love over there, it’s about everything! It really captured a big chunk of my life where a lot of things were changing.” Before taking up DJing, Wonderland was a trained cellist. However, as she got older she began to expand her musical horizons. “I heard Silent Shout by The Knife and that made me want to pick up a computer and make electronic music. I’ve always liked a lot of different genres, I have quite eclectic taste because of my parents. I was playing cello and that’s what I thought I was gonna do and then I guess I realised there was a bigger world out there and I was liking different things.”

Wonderland’s features a strong mix of guest artists, including a notable collaboration with Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. The track, entitled ‘U Don’t Know’ has been gaining popularity and plenty of radio play. “The Wayne Coyne one was interesting, because all the other artists on this album are my friends. He just heard the track through my label! That’s probably the only thing my label organized. He liked the song so he wanted to be a part of it, which is crazy! I love that a lot of artists from different worlds and genres are collaborating and I think it brings something a little different out of the music. I’m a really big believer in that!” Alison Wonderland’s debut album ‘Run’ is being released on March 20th. Sophie Joske

records. The first release called “I Found Out” that we wrote with the amazing Beverley Knight got to the number 1 spot in the UK music week chart back in November. The previous month I got my first ever Billboard no 1 in the USA dance chart with my own single “Shelter Me”, featuring Inaya Day, beating the likes of Avicii, David Guetta, Jennifer Lopez and Zedd to the top spot. I was also lucky enough to present an award in Miami at the WMC awards ceremony and got to DJ on the red carpet along with my dear friend, Ultra Nate.

Dynamic dance duo, Bimbo Jones, know how to turn the party. They’ve played all across the world, from Miami, to Ibiza to good ol’ Perth – wherever they are, so shall the party be. I caught up with legendary mixmaster Lee Dagger about what he’s been up to since his last visit to our city and asked him if Perth stands to measure against the rest of the party-sphere.

What have you been up to since we saw you last? Hello Perth, it’s been a fab year! I started 2014 with my New Years Eve set with you all at Connections Nightclub. I then travelled to Sydney, Miami, Marseille, Prague, Ibiza and beyond on tour. 2014 saw the release of our 2nd Bimbo Jones studio album “Go Naked” on Radikal

I am also proud to announce that I have been granted my USA visa which allows me to work and live in the USA for 2-3 years. I plan to move there and continue writing many new exciting new songs with lots of artists You’ve got a lot going on! Who are some of your favourite artists to play at the moment? I love any music with energy. Be it funky house, vocal house, some deep house, and a little progressive or electro for big festivals. I am

liking a whole range of producers and remixers such as Oliver Heldens, Smith & Westin, M-Series, Shadow Child and Bimbo Jones (HAHA! …if I can say that). Jennifer Hudson’s voice is amazing. I would love to write with her! Have you noticed any differences between UK and Aussie club kids? Yes, of course! Sadly, the UK is being brainwashed by Radio 1 into thinking the kids want to hear drum and bass which I can’t stand! Do you ever get any requests that you flat out refuse to play? Rarely, but yes it has happened before. I was once handed £5 in London by some drunken dude telling me to put some R&B on! Oh dear! You’ve toured with your act all over the world. Which city has the craziest parties? (and I mean craziest!) Prague and clubs all around the Czech Republic are insane… also Switzerland and Siberia! Of course, Australia ranks up there at times, which I LOVE! culture had intended for Northstar to be openly gay, a first in the Marvel universe. At the time, Marvel had a policy against openly homosexual characters, which was in accordance with the Comics Code Authority. The CCA was formed in 1954, initially to censor blood and gore from comic books, though it wasn’t long before its definition expanded to prevent thematic exploration of sexual orientation. Byrne was dedicated to his creation, instead writing Northstar as having no interest in women due to his blind commitment to skiing. In 1992, Marvel railed against the CCA, having Northstar state in no uncertain terms, “I am gay”. Over the last few decades, comic book and cartoon universes have seen a massive rise in LGBTIQ characters. Some of them are brand new characters who identify as LGBT from their inception. Some of them are classic characters, who have come out of the closet in recent years. Some of them are queer icons, who may not outwardly identify with any label. For these writers and publishers, it is a powerful statement to be including these themes in their literature, yet it is still quite rare to see. It is incredibly easy to dismiss animated programming and comic books as niche culture, yet there are examples from both realms that have become so ubiquitous in popular culture today, it would be foolish to ignore their capacity as mainstream media. LGBT characters in animation also provide a beacon for youth who are confused, alone or afraid. As a young boy, I always looked to the ‘X-Men’ as an allegory for growing up gay. The comic book team of super-powered mutants were outcast from society for being different, yet their creed

was to help all others in need and do what is right – no matter what. Their founder, Xavier, taught them to find strength in what made them different. In this I found strength, and I still do, even at 26 years of age. Now, it is not mere allegory, but explicit mentions of teenage mutants, or aliens or everyday humans dealing with the struggles of growing up queer, all the while fighting evil and saving the planet. Let’s take a look at some of these LGBT superheroes who have saved the world, and how audiences have reacted to their place in a fictional universe. At the peak of their popularity, expanded comic book universes were proliferating new characters, worlds and teams exponentially. One iteration of the ‘Uncanny X-Men’, saw the formation of a Canadian team of mutants, who would later feature in their own series, “Alpha Flight”. Northstar, a French-Canadian elite skier, who discovered he could manipulate light and fly, was a major player in this squadron. At the time of the first issue’s release in 1979, creator John Byrne

Marvel were the first comic book publishers to write in an openly gay character, to much controversy from the public. The controversy was reignited in 2009, when Northstar announced his engagement to his lover, Kyle. Despite opposition from conservative groups in the USA, Marvel made a major event of Northstar’s wedding, dedicating an entire issue to the marriage, and inviting an all-star cast of characters to attend the ceremony. Now, other major comic labels have ditched the CCA’s rulings and feature characters from across the LBGTIQ spectrum, and I only hope there are many more to come. More recently, Nickelodeon’s ridiculously successful cartoon series ‘The Legend of Korra’ faced some controversy for merely alluding to a homosexual relationship between eponymous hero Korra, and one of her female companions. Korra, the chosen avatar, must journey across her world to master the elements and bring peace to the planet. During her journey Korra faces many obstacles, though none so thoroughly explored as her on-and-off relationship with her

traveling companion Mako (a male). Along for the journey are Mako’s brother Bolin, and Mako’s exgirlfriend Asami. Korra and Asami have a tense relationship at first, due to some jealousy issues – however their friendship blossoms a strong and honest bond, with the power of friendship being a major theme in the series. At the finale, Korra (SPOILERS) saves the world and steps through the portal to the spirit realm. Korra, at this point single and assumed “straight”, clasps hands with her close companion Asami, and walks through the portal in the final scene of the series. This sparked a massive outpour of angry social media posts from conservatives, decreeing the creators had no right to ruin the show with “fan service”. Parents were outraged that their children had to see two women holding hands. The creators decided to dispel the confusion, by posting online that “Korrasami is canon”. The two women are a couple, they were confused about their sexuality throughout the series and that is why there was tension between them. This statement from the show’s creators helped to reinforce that LGBT identifying people exist everywhere, and that they have every right to be represented in all forms of literature and entertainment, for that better reflects the spectrum of sexuality that exists in our world. Korra and Northstar are but two examples in these massive and rapidly expanding realms of popular culture. Hopefully producers will continue to honestly reflect our world within their fabricated universes and help audiences, young and old, to understand diversity should be celebrated, not censored.
