Reality Check, aisle 7 Imagine you’re in the supermarket, you’ve got a trolley full of groceries and you head to the checkout. As you unload your purchases on to the conveyor the attendant stops you and asks you and your partner a question. “Are you a gay couple?”

Are there really butchers, bakers and candlestick makers who are going to be grasping their rosary beads at the thought of selling a cake to a happy gay couple? And do we really as a society think for even a single second that that would ever be acceptable?

After you confirm that you are, the attendant breaks the news to you that his religious beliefs prevent him from serving groceries to gay people. He recommends you put your choices back in the trolley and head down to check out seven, the attendant on that register accepts gay people.

Graeme Watson editor@outinperth.com

Choose Your Prize 2016 is shaping up to be a year of great live music. Within the first few months of the year there’s a stack of great artists heading to Perth. Fat Boy Slim will be at The Red Hill Auditorium on January 22nd, which is sure to be massive.

You start to unload at checkout seven, but the attendant looks at you with disdain. She leans over and tells you that while she will serve gay people because she doesn’t believe that the bible specifically rules out gay people- that bit about eating fish on a Friday though is a deal breaker.

Queer favourite Missy Higgins returns to Perth on February 26th playing at the new JShed in Fremantle, Kate MillerHeidke will be there on March 4th and San Cisco will play a home town show on March 19th.

It’s a Friday and you’ve got some beef steaks in your trolley and the attendant at checkout seven doesn’t know if you can be trusted to not eat the streak until tomorrow. She recommends you roll the trolley over towards checkout two.

The amazing Diana Krall is playing in Kings Park on February 13th, Rob Thomas is Kings Park on March 2nd, Ben Harper arrives on March 8th and Tom Jones follows a few days later on March 13th.

Sadly the attendant at checkout has a sign saying she doesn’t serve those who have been divorced. Too bad your partner married a woman in twenties before coming out five years later. You leave your groceries behind.

Head to the Giveaways page at www.OUTinPerth.com and enter our ‘Choose Your Prize’ competition where you can nominate one of the above shows and score a double pass to see your favourite artist.

While nobody calling for marriage equality is suggesting that religious bodies would be compelled to marry a gay couple (unless they wanted to), Churches have begun to argue for the right to discrimination in any part of society based on religious views, particularly in jobs and the provision of services.

CD Giveaways: We’ve also copies of the new CD’s from Samantha Jade, One Direction and Troye Sivan up for grabs plus the new Ministry of Sound Chill Out Sessions XVIII.

Plus over at the Riverside Theatre Melissa Etheridge will make an appearance on April 1st and Beach Boys icon Brian Wilson will be there on April 7th playing the classic album “Pet Sounds’.

It seems like a ridiculous scenario – but isn’t that what opponents to marriage equality as suggesting when they argue that religious views should over rule anti-discrimination laws?

Not too long ago a WA politician suggested that if gay people didn’t want to be discriminated in aged care services, where many are run by religious organisations, we should build our own retirement homes. Will we have to build our own supermarkets, cake stores and wedding venues too?

CONNECTIONS READY FOR BIRTHDAY BASH It’s been a busy time for Connections Nightclub as the venue prepares for its massive 40th birthday party. “We’re flying queens in from all over Australia,” Scott Telfer one of the club’s managers reveals, “Arpi and Hannah Conda, Electra and a range of people from Connections past.” “We’ve been up all night with mirror balls and glitter and all the things we’re famous for,” Telfer said noting that under the direction of Connections Entertainment Manager Barbie Q there would be around eight shows during the giant birthday bash. The night will kick off with an exclusive VIP champagne reception before the doors open to the general public at 8pm. While all the pre-sale tickets have quickly been snapped up, there will be a few door sales available for people who get down early. “There’s going to be lots of cakes, a cake being presented by a cake, and lots more” Telfer said. It’s unusual for a nightclub to celebrate a 40th birthday, most venues renovate and rebrand after a few years, but Connections has surpassed all its neighbours. Telfer said the upcoming birthday has encouraged a lot of people who haven’t been to the club for years to come forward and share their memories, especially when the club recently opened during the day as part of Open House Perth.

For Telfer himself the club stands out as something very unique that he hasn’t seen anywhere else in the world. “I probably first came to Connections about ten years ago, I happened to be in Perth for the very first time” Telfer recalls in his distinct Scottish accent. “A friend explained about this place, and I thought – ‘No, places like that don’t exist anymore’ and we went to Connections and it was absolutely amazing!” Seven years later Telfer returned to Australia and became part of the Connections team. “There are lots of gay clubs around the world but none of them have that vintage that Connections has, that history that stretches back over decades.” Telfer said. “The drag performances here are like nothing else, I’ve been to bars all over the world, but Connections just blows my mind”. Soon the popular manager will celebrate his third anniversary at the club, Telfer jokes that for his third anniversary maybe he’ll be given some feathers or a new sailors cap. Telfer’s a big fan of dressing up for every night at the club and is constantly surprising people with his different outfits. Ask what the secret to rocking a new look night after night Telfer nominates gaffer tape and safety pins as the secret tools. “I derive a lot of pleasure from it, I never quite know what I’m going to do, but Spotlight is an amazing shop, I do love taking lots of cheap materials and stapling them together!” Connections 40th Birthday is on Saturday December 5th from 8pm.

“It’s been really nice hearing people’s stories from thirty or forty years ago,” Telfer said, “I’ve really been blown away by the amount of interest.”

Each year we ask you, our readers, what you consider to be your favourite things about being out in Perth. This year we asked you where you liked to eat, drink, be merry and everything in between for The Lists: 2015

RTRFM’s Birthday Bash! I had just returned from a collaboration in Italy where I met up with a DJ and we recorded and filmed in Florence. That track was my first original called ‘Never Let Me Go’. It was a Euro-Pop Dance track. Back then I didn’t really have a clear vision of who I wanted to be as an artist, I was young and just having fun with the adventures of life. My music now I feel is more mature, has deeper messages and especially in the last year I have really developed this Bloom brand. I want to sing about issues we don’t tend to talk about on the surface in the hope to connect with people when they feel their most vulnerable so they don’t feel alone.

GALSWA SWING OUT LOUD – What a night!

How long has it taken to make this EP – where did it start?

Singer Amanda Canzurlo, who performs as Bloom recently delivered a knock out showcase at The Ellington Jazz Club. Her debut EP is released this month and features a selection of adult contemporary pop. You were so confident at your show at The Ellington, are you super confident or good at hiding nerves? I am glad I came across confident, however yes I have learned how to channel my nerves into a more positive energy rather than something negative. I always feel pressure to put on a good show for people who have taken the time to come and watch, so I feel I have no choice but to be confident, even if deep down I am scared, I just try to not let my thoughts go there. Tell me about being Bloom, as opposed to Amanda. Bloom is my alter ego. I have been singing cover songs as ‘Amanda’ my whole life, professionally over the past 15 years or so, so when I was discovering who I wanted to be as an artist I found it easier to find my true sound and style by creating Bloom. I am still me, but I feel when I am on stage as Bloom I am more relaxed, deep and meaningful and the purest version of myself. Last time you were in OUTinPerth was back in 2012, you’re almost unrecognisable now, such a transformation! How have you changed musically since that picture was taken? WOW! Not my best angle! haha, why was this photo ever published!!! haha.. It seems like a lifetime ago, I believe that gig was at The Court in celebration of All Things Queer on

Rob Agostini and I started writing around July 2014, so over a year to get to this point, I was studying full time at WAAPA at the time and I knew I wanted to write, but I wanted to write with a new producer, previously I was writing with my producer in LA, over Skype - it’s great, it just slows down the process. I had heard great things about Rob and his studio Soundbaker so I thought I would try write with him to see if we were on the same track, we were and this is the EP we created together. Self funding slows down the process but I am really happy with the end result. Are all your songs about personal experiences? Where do you find inspiration for your songs? They are about personal experiences, one way or another the topics I sing about have either affected me directly or indirectly - I empathise with people going through heartbreak or loss, we have all been through it at one stage or another. The inspiration just comes on its own! Just today I was driving some new lyrics came to mind, if you become more aware of your surroundings there is a song in everything I think, I definitely find it easier to write sad songs - I haven’t written a happy song yet, that isn’t to say I am not happy deep down - I love my life, I suppose at this stage of my career I am trying to just go with the flow when it comes to the creativity and write what comes naturally. What’s next after this EP? EP will drop online December 10, I will be playing at Disconnect Festival on December 11th and then I will be heading over to Melbourne in February and we have some shows lined up over there! Back into the writing now and hopefully 2016 will be a year full of travel and getting the EP out to as many people as possible! Graeme Watson

The Gay and Lesbian Singers of WA showed they had lifted the bar even higher with the quality and slickness of their recent Pride concert ‘Swing Out Loud’. A sell out audience packed the Italian Club and enjoyed a night of variety, pizzazz, and true entertainment. The choir brilliantly led by musical director Claire Williamson opened with a polished delivery of a Duke Ellington medley which set the scene for the swing theme of the night. The night provided a good spread of songs sung by the whole choir including a middle bracket which was introduced as ‘gay anthems’. Tight renditions of ‘True Colours’, ‘Home’, ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘Brave’ showed the passion the choir has for these songs. Other swing/jazz classics included ‘Anything Goes’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and ‘The Lady Is a Tramp’. These were interspersed by small group and solo acts illustrating the depth of talent in the choir. The alto’s rendition of ‘Perhaps’, ‘Swing Both Ways’ by James Massey and Stan Schirmer were some of the highlights. Nikki Cosby’s ‘Minnie the Moocher’ had the whole audience participating. The choir sound has benefitted from its increased numbers, now about 40 members, resplendent in a range of formal attire. The obvious hard work of rehearsals paid off as had attracting more men’s voices to the choir. Many of the arrangements were far from simple and the choir delivered these effortlessly. Musical support was provided by the skillful piano fingers of Sammy McSweeney, the choir’s regular accompanist and for the night the professional services of Tim Woolley on drums and Murray Wilkins on double bass. The entertainment continued with some demonstration swing dancing performed by the Perth Swing Dance Academy. Breaks also allowed for dance floor opportunities for the whole audience. The well-deserved encore Mack the Knife ended the night; again with a polished and energetic performance. A great night. Next year be sure you get in early to get a ticket for GALSWA’s annual Pride concert. If you missed out this time around keep an eye out for GALSWA who will be taking part in Perth Fringe for the second year with their show ‘Come Out Swinging’ on 28th January at 7.15 pm. GALSWA is an important part of the Perth LGBTI community and will be off to New Zealand early next year to take part in the Out and Loud Choral Festival. Jude Comfort

music news

As Matoma, 24 year old Norwegian producer Tom Lagergren helped define the Tropical House sound of 2015. In just one year his releases have amassed over a quarter of a billion streams, earned him an incredible and ever-growing fanbase, and cast a spotlight on what he does next. Now he’s ready to release his debut album ‘Hakuna Matoma’, but the Norwegian producer is using an alternate method to get his music out to the masses. ‘Hakuna Matoma’ is being released in a totally unique way – using the playlist format to see the album expand and evolve over time. Available on every download and streaming platform now, this first-of-its-kind format will allow the album to grow as more tracks are added. Listeners can subscribe to ‘Hakuna Matoma’ now to hear the music and get notifications on upcoming additions, and be a part of his album campaign as it unfolds. In addition to five new originals, ‘Hakuna Matoma’ will see the inclusion of some fan favorites. Along with ‘Old Thing Back’ the album also launches with ‘Try Me,’ a collaboration with superstars Jason Derulo and Jennifer Lopez, his massive new re-imagination of One Direction’s ‘Perfect’ and most recently ‘Stick Around’ alongside Akon. New music will constantly be added to ‘Hakuna Matoma’ every few weeks through to early next year, making it a truly unique approach to the album cycle. OUTinPerth caught up with Matoma ahead of his first Australian tour. This will be your first trip to Australia, what are your expectations? I only expect it will be good fun! My manager is from Australia and tells me all about it, we’re going to do some meetings and studio sessions and hopefully also have a day off to explore. But mainly excited about the shows. Since I started putting music out I’ve always had a lot of messages online from fans in Australia so I can’t wait to play and have a good time. Wherever I go in the world that’s what it’s all about for me! How have you gone about creating your album ‘Hakuna Matoma’; you haven’t taken a traditional path.

December 2015

When I started putting music out on Soundcloud I was just really enjoying making music I loved and getting it to my fans immediately and hearing the feedback and positive comments really inspired me to keep going. When I signed with my label I wanted to make sure I could do the same thing, and keep delivering content to my fans constantly. So when I started making my album “Hakuna Matoma”, we came up with an idea for how we could do that using a playlist to house the album and to have it grow over time. So far I have put 5 new singles in there and I have many more surprises to come!

Tropical house is huge this year, do you ever worry about being pigeonholed in a genre? I think that what I do has a tropical flavour but is also so much more diverse and I will always keep evolving my sound so I’m not really worried about how people categorize it. For me I just want to make music that I love and gives people a good time, and right now I think my sound is not just tropical – it’s a bit of old school hip hop, some Caribbean reggae influence, some folk and emotional music and some pop! That’s another reason for the way I want to release my album over time, because it will keep evolving as I get different inspirations and I want my fans to be a part of that journey with me. What was it like working with Akon? It was really great. We had a night in the studios in LA a few weeks ago and worked on this idea. He was always a big inspiration to me from his “Freedom” album and I really admire the work he does in charity, and he was just such a great friendly guy. Seriously his voice is just so different, I think it reaches listeners in a really strong way, and he nailed the vocal and I finished the music and we’re all really happy with the result! What’s the craziest gig you’ve played so far? Seriously this year has had so many crazy gigs! One of my favorites would be when I played at this show called UKA in my home city of Trondheim a few weeks ago. I was there with my brother and all my friends and there were 6000 people just going crazy to my music. When did you first start making music? I learned piano when I was little and always loved music and experimented with making it all my life. But just over a year ago I started making music as Matoma and putting it on my Soundcloud and it kept growing and growing and here I am today! I just want to make music that makes people happy and Im really so lucky to have the fans that I have that enjoy my music and give me inspiration every day. Catch Matoma on Sunday 6th December at Sets of the Beach, Perth. Graeme Watson

culture The musical ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ will be returning to Australian stages in 2016. For the last few weeks Perth’s queer audiences have been watching the Drag Queens at Connections Nightclub perform their renditions of the songs from the show, now we’ll all have a chance to see the show in full. The monster musical will premiere at Hayes Theatre Co in Sydney in February 2016 followed by seasons in Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Perth. Brent Hill will take on the role of Seymour and Esther Hannaford will play his love interest Audrey. While master puppet makers Erth will create the plant that takes over all of their lives. The musical is based on the 1960’s low budget film directed by Roger Corman. The story was made into an off Broadway musical in 1982. The show had a successful Broadway and West End run and an Australian version took over His Majesty’s Theatre in 1985. ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ was written by Alan Menkin and Howard Ashman. The pair would go on to write a lot of Disney cartoons including ‘Oliver and Company’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Aladdin’ and ‘The Little Mermaid’. In 1986 a film version of the musical was created starring Rick Moranis, Steve Martin and Ellen Greene – who played the role of Audrey both on Broadway and in the West End. The film version was directed by Muppet alum Frank Oz. The film version has a completely different ending to the stage version – something that makes the stage version far superior the film. The Perth season will begin in August 2016, are on sale now. Image: Jeff Busby.

fun music

Stuck for gift ideas this Christmas? Does your mum already have all of Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks? Looking for a way to drown out the ramblings of your overzealous, possibly homophobic uncle? Then give the gift that keeps on giving this holiday season by preparing these easy to make (and easier to drink) cocktails for the family table. Share them with company or just enjoy the carafe to yourself – after all, it’s Christmas!

Ginger B. Read (Serves 4)

Candis Cayne (Serves 4)

120mL Irish Cream

120mL Vanilla Rum

120mL Vodka

120mL White Chocolate Liqueur

60mL Coffee Liqueur

120mL Peppermint Schnapps

Gingerbread Syrup

1. This one’s as easy as hanging candy canes on the tree - Combine all ingredients in a cocktail mixer and shake. Unleash some of your internalised rage by smashing up some whole candy canes to sprinkle on top for an extra jolly treat.

- 1 Cup Sugar - 1 Cup Water - 4/5 Cloves - 2 Cinnamon Sticks - Fresh Ginger 1. First, to make the gingerbread syrup, combine the sugar, water, cloves, cinnamon and a thumb-sized nub of ginger in a small saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves. Simmer for 5 mins, then remove from heat and allow to cool. 2. Combine vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, gingerbread syrup and some ice in a cocktail mixer – shake well. 3. Serve with garnish – we suggest your favourite ice cream, whipped cream and some crumbled gingerbread cookies for a crunch.

Egg Nog She Better Don’t (Serves 4) 6 Eggs ¾ cup Sugar 1L Full-Cream Milk 500mL Thickened Cream 240mL Bourbon

Puddin’ (Serves 4)

120mL Spiced Rum 1. Separate the eggs. Beat the yolks and ½ cup of sugar until they lighten in colour.

120mL Spiced Rum

2. Add the milk, cream, bourbon and rum – stir.

120mL Sherry

3. Take the egg whites and whisk with remaining sugar until they form fluffy peaks.

120mL Gingerbread Syrup (See: Gingerbread Recipe) 1. Throw them all in a mixer, shake and serve! Garnish with citrus zest and your favourite ice cream.

4. Fold just under half of the egg whites into the yolk mix and serve – adding more egg white for fresh servings. 5. Garnish with grated nutmeg – or try adding some cherry liqueur for a fruity variant.

Local HIV/AIDS advocate Cipriano Martinez has been elected president of the National Association of People Living with HIV Australia (NAPWHA). It’s the first time someone from Western Australia has held the role. The state’s NAPWHA representatives are Paul Baines and Izaac Buckley Speaking to OUTinPerth on World AIDS Day Martinez said stigma remained a big challenge for people living with HIV but the community was also excited about many new advances in treatments and research. “Some of the big issues remain the same like reducing stigma” Martinez said, “but we also have the START trial that showed that it’s best to start treatments as soon as someone is diagnosed and we’re also very focused this year on making sure that PrEP treatment occurs in Australia.”

Anna Winther, a 29-year-old Norwegian woman who had been living in Western Australia for several years, is one of the victims of the devastating Esperance fire. A passionate campaigner for the LGBTIQ community and human rights, Anna was an active member of Amnesty International, working tirelessly on a campaign to end discrimination and violence against LGBTIQ people in Russia.

from Germany, 31-year-old Briton Tom and not far from local farmer Kym Curnow. Their bodies were found inside a burned out vehicle that has rolled while towing a horse float. The trio died trying to save themselves and a horse from the blaze. OUTinPerth offers sincere condolences to Anna’s partner, friends and family.

“We have lots of people who are in poz/ neg relationships and partners that would really appreciate the opportunity to be on PrEP and being able to reduce their anxieties and have more confidences are in their lives.” PrEP is a new treatment that allows HIV negative people to take a daily pill that dramatically reduces the chance of them contracting the virus. Martinez said that while the LGBTIQ community had been learning a lot about

PrEP there was still a challenge in getting all of society up to speed. Martinez praised the work of Lavina Crooks, President of the Australian Society of HIV Medicine for acknowledging that people with an undetectable viral load are not infectious. “It is taking time for people to modernise their views around HIV, but it is 2015 and we know that pills not only work to assist people who positive to become non-infectious but for those people who are negative they can take some pills as well and they can protect themselves fully, and that’s an exciting time.” Martinez said. “It means for the first time everyone has the capacity to end this epidemic together.”

Senator Simms slams ACL’s homophobia Greens Senator Robert Simms has slammed the Australian Christian Lobby, labelling them as an extreme fringe group that promotes sexism, homophobia and transphobia. The South Australian senator gave an impassioned speech defending the anti-bullying campaign, Safe Schools Coalition, and the work of youth organisation Minus 18. Last month the ACL launched a national campaign to close down the program. Senator Simms said the claims by the ACL that the Safe Schools program

taught teenagers gay and lesbian techniques were absurd. Senator Simms said that he was reluctant to give the organisations views any more attention, but the organisation should be held to account.

in Australia describing them as an extreme fringe group that promotes a world view that is dangerous and divisive.

“The ACL should be held to account for the homophobia that they fan in our community. They should held to account for the brazen lies that they tell and the misinformation that they spread.” Senator Simms said.

“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the ACL have taken aim at an organisation that seeks to combat bullying, given that they promote sexism, homophobia and transphobia – the very currency of bullies. That’s their stock in trade, that’s the business model of the ACL.” Senator Simms said.

The senator said that despite its name, the ACL did not represent Christians

The ACL did not respond to requests for comment.

Rod Kelly Dies Rod Kelly, the former owner of The Court Hotel passed away in late November. Mr Kelly purchased the iconic pub in the early ‘90s and transformed it into a gay and lesbian venue. Rod Kelly’s commitment to opening a new venue for the community came at a time when many long standing queer venues had closed. The early days of the Court Hotel are remembered for its large beer garden and fish ponds – ponds, which often featured much loved community member Buka dancing around the edges. Ray Currell, who was one of the longest serving managers of the venue during Mr Kelly’s ownership, recalled his former boss as a colourful character.

When ‘The Court’ first became a gay and lesbian venue the building was close to being condemned and featured dodgy floorboards and years of wear and tear. To give The Court a bit of pizazz the former antique dealer added some stylish lights and features. One of the regular events in the venue’s early days was The Miss Court International competition. The images above show Mr Kelly and the contestants at the 1995 edition of the show. Alongside The Court Mr Kelly was involved in wellknown Northbridge venues DC’s and Pals. Image: Paul Bluett

Japan issues first samesex marriage licence

Italian Soccer Chief: “Keep the gays away”

Tokyo officials have registered Japan’s first official same-sex marriage last week as Koyuki Higashi and Hiroko Masuhara wed in Tokyo’s Shibuya office.

The head of the Italian Football Federation has denied being racist and homophobic after he was recorded making comments deemed to be racist and homophobic.

Shibuya lawmakers voted in March this year to allow same-sex couples to become eligible for marriage certificates within the Tokyo ward.

The comments from Carlo Tavecchio were said to be recorded during an interview for website Soccer Life, they were later published in an Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

Shibuya’s certificates do not grant the same protections as other Japanese marriage certificates however, as the documents are only recognised within Shibuya and nearby Setagaya – which also permits same-sex couples to marry.

Tavecchio reportedly made the remarks while talking about a Jewish-Italian businessman Cesere Anticoli.

As yet, there are also no legal protections for these certificates, leaving businesses and individuals free to ignore the documentation.

“Ladies over 40 are still in the game. Keep doing what you’re doing, ladies, because we will decide when it is time for us to stop.” Tina Arena at the ARIA Awards

He also is reported to have said: “I don’t have anything against gays – but keep them away from me.”

“Fun holiday hint: Put your depression medication in an advent calendar.”

Tavecchio has denied the report arguing that the recording was not made during an interview but as part of a blackmail attempt, he has also suggested that the recording could have been tampered with.

FRANCE

PrEP approved in France France has moved forward with the introduction of PrEP treatments to combat HIV infections. The decision by France’s Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Women’s Rights follows a similar recommendation in the USA. French minister Marisol Touraine, made the decision this week allowing the drug Truvada to be officially used by HIV negative people as a preventative option. “I welcome the publication of a temporary recommendation for use of Truvada, a drug that should allow us to significantly advance the fight against HIV”, the Minister said. The French decision follows the announcement that United States Centre for Disease Control has recommended that PrEP should be offered to approximately one in four ‘high-risk’ people to help eradicate HIV.

RUSSIA

Russian Mag prints list of “I’ve spent my whole life exposed to heterosexuality; we live in a heteronormative ‘Gays We Respect’ Russian magazine Maxim – owned by a different publisher to its US cousin – have posted a list of ‘Gays We Respect‘ onto their online publication. “We, men, do not consider men who love men to be men,” the piece begins, “but there are exceptions. There are gays who have earned our respect and the right to remain real men in our eyes,” the article reads. “We weren’t sure about including Neil Patrick Harris in the list – after all, he declared himself a “happy gay” in 2006 but his performance as Barney Stinson in the series ‘How I Met Your Mother’ hasn’t left us indifferent.” “It’s impossible not to respect someone who elevated the hunt for girls into a true art, who systematized all the tricks and techniques and created the “Bro Code”. Even if we has just acting the role. But how he acted!” The United States’ Maxim magazine have condemned the article, saying it is “entirely against (our) views”.

society. Indeed, it seems you can’t turn on a TV or pick up a magazine without being exposed to rampant heterosexuality! It’s everywhere I look! Straight couples holding hands. Straight couples getting married. The other day, I even saw a straight couple kissing on the streets of Adelaide. It’s everywhere I look. They are on a recruitment drive! Renowned DJ Wayne G is set to visit Connections Nightclub for a massive Boxing Day party. 2015 has seen the popular DJ travel extensively playing parties all over the world including an appearance alongside one of his heroes.

The list of places you’ve DJ’d is HUGE, is there anywhere you aspire to play that hasn’t happened yet?

You’ve sampled quite a few; which city has the best Pride party?

I have been so lucky, 2016 is 21 years of DJ’ing for me and I have got to travel the world, see some amazing places and meet fantastic people along the way. Of all the parties left to play, I do have 3 on my bucket list. One is Coachella, one is Burning Man and the other is the Winter Beach Party in Miami. But for me as a DJ, I am just as happy to play a small club with a low ceiling and barely any lights, as I am to play a super club or a big festival.

Oh gosh, every city around the world is different, You play somewhere like Sydney Mardi Gras, which is immense and you get a huge sense of community and a massive influx of tourists and then two months later you can play Salt Lake City Pride and I am reminded that we have a long way to come in this world, till we are all accepted for who we are. When I was watching the parade there last year, something most people tend to avoid these days, let’s face it, they would rather head out to the clubs/bars instead, I realised I was one of a very few hundred that were there to support those marching, the rest were Mormons that were holding placards and shouting abuse about how we were all going to Hell for our behavior. It’s very hard to bite your lip in those situations. But also very eye opening in making me aware that we have still have a long fight ahead of us and not to become complacent.

When did your love of music begin? No laughing but it actually came from my sister constantly spinning the double LP of the ‘Grease’ the movie soundtrack. Yep. That Gay. Then ‘Saturday Night Fever’. My sister always had this impeccable taste through the mid ‘80s for soul music. Naturally, over the years I stole her record collection. I started buying my own records around the age of 7 and by the age of 13, I was working in a record shop, on the Old Kent Rd in London, called Deejays, that every rave DJ in late 87/88 was coming to for all the latest tunes. So I was always strangely upfront with rave music from an early age. I ended up never being paid from that weekend job. I always took home records instead of cash but still never had the desire to be a DJ. You play music across a range of genres, is there any style that you just can’t stand? I am still trying to work out if I like what this ‘Tropical House’ is that seems to have popped up. Some of the Dubstep stuff, I can find a little noisy but I actually love all genres of music. That is why it’s really tough to pigeon hole me with one particular sound. Even when it comes to remixes. I always add elements from other genres into my remix tracks.

Which song do you keep going back to? Gosh, there are a few but I love ANYTHING Whitney. She was my girl and I will try and throw her in, even if it’s a tiny sample, into every set. One song at the moment I am addicted to, is Jess Glynn ‘Hold My Hand’. Which is why I have done my own remix that you will hear at Connections on Boxing Day for the first time. Earlier this year you got to DJ alongside one of your idols Shep Pettibone, the man behind many of Madonna’s hits – how did it go? There are no words. When he first reached out on Facebook and said he loved my work, I thought it was someone fake. We then started to talk about music and stuff and I realised he was the real Shep. Then he and his wonderful assistant Kelly approached me about playing last summer on the Saturday night at the club/resort he owns in Ashbury Park, New Jersey. Then on the Sunday it was Shep’s birthday and they asked if I would like to spin the pool party for his birthday with him. HOW THE HECK DO YOU SAY NO TO SHEP PETTIBONE? Simples. You don’t. It was one of the most magical experiences of my life. A man I have idolised since the 80s, all his remixes, productions, the stuff he wrote for Madonna, the albums he produced for her. I mean, he is the legend. Catch Wayne G at Connections Nightclub on Boxing Day. Photo credit: Rikke Photography

In the past few months, the M Clinic has seen the rates of HIV, Gonorrhoea and Syphilis increasing in Perth gay men. Even if you practice safer sex (by wearing condoms during anal or using PrEP), you could still be at risk of picking up a sexually transmitted infection (STI). And remember, not all STI’s show symptoms, so testing is the only way to know for sure.

But don’t worry, there are many other places you can get tested over the holiday break. You can get tested at Royal Perth Hospital Sexual Health Clinic, South Terrace Clinic or by your GP. If you have symptoms, and can’t get through to a GP or sexual health clinic, you can also drop into your closest Emergency Department to get treatment.

Now that the big holiday break is quickly approaching, this also means that many services will also go on break. The M Clinic’s last day of testing will be Wednesday 16th of December 2015, and our first day testing in the New Year will be Tuesday 5th January 2016. With appointments booking up quick, we are encouraging guys to plan ahead and call us or book online.

If you are worried you’ve been exposed to HIV, you can access PostExposure Prophylaxis within 72 hours to prevent you from acquiring the infection. It’s not a substitute for a condom, it’s not a morning-after pill, but it is there if you need it. If you do need it over the holiday period, call the PEP line 1300 767 161 – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For more information on testing or to book online, go to www. mclinic.org.au or contact the M Clinic on 9227 0734 to make an appointment. If you need crisis support over the holidays, Lifeline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 13 11 14. Wishing you all a Happy Holiday!

DJ Dan Slater is heading back to Perth for a massive NYE Party at Connections Nightclub.

We saw from your Facebook page that you rocked a great outfit at Halloween. What do you think you’ll be wearing at Connections NYE ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’ party? Thank you! I always put a lot of effort into my Halloween costumes. I can’t give any details away, I like to keep my costumes a surprise for the night. If you were sent to a remote planet in outer-space and could only take 5 records what would be essential? Given that all the songs I have are currently digital, my current top 5 tracks are: Blondee Feat. Veselina Popova - Nothing Compares 2 U (7 Hours Love Mix) Hugo Sanchez, Vitti, Leo Blanco, Nalaya - Over You (Leo Blanco & Dani Toro Remix) 99 Souls ft. Destiny’s Child & Brandy - The Girl Is Mine (Club Mix) Sigala - Sweet Lovin’ (Extended Mix) Phil Romano Feat Maya Simantov - Everybody’s Heart (Original Mix) You’re so well known as a DJ now, do you think you’ll ever return to the world of musical theatre? What show would tempt you? I do miss working in musical theatre. However, I don’t think I’ll be returning to the stage anytime soon. If I were to do a musical I would love to do ‘West Side Story’ or ‘Evita’. Any thoughts on what song would be perfect to play at midnight to start a new year? Tough question, but for NYE the perfect song is usually a current hit of favourite from throughout the year. Join us at Connections on NYE to find out! What’s your new year’s resolution going to be? Spend more time working on original tracks and music production. Dan Slater is playing at Connections Nightclub’s New Year’s Eve party ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’.

Adult film star, musician and vlogger Mickey Taylor is a man with a mission. Unabashed and earnest, the entrepreneur talks to Leigh Hill about music, pornography and his mummy. How did you get started in the adult film industry? I started out kind of strange actually, I was recruited. At first I really didn’t like the idea but I sat down with my mum who is super supportive. She said I’d be a fool to not at least try and that I could really make something unique in the industry and show people something different. So yeah! Thanks mum! (laughs) Celebrities all have crazy fans - Have you had any awkward encounters with fans who recognise you from your scenes? It does happen! I’ve had people run up for photos on the street or in clubs. I’ve had a few people get emotional and cry which is sweet. I think because I do other things like my YouTube vlogs, music, modelling etc… I’ve lessened the dirtier aspect people might perceive me to have as a porn star and kind of glamorised what I did a little with everything else. You don’t see many porn stars on mainstream magazine covers, but I’ve always been a model first. It means industries are combining and being more accepting. Fans come from anywhere which is amazing and I love that and I love them! Has it been difficult to navigate relationships working as an adult film star? At first I found my first two relationships tough. One didn’t do porn and wasn’t accepting, one did porn but was very young and a little immature so he didn’t understand I had many goals and things I wanted to achieve rather than just party. I’m with Jack Green now, who is also in the industry, and we just got engaged which is amazing! He’s a really lovely amazing guy and we encourage each other to do well and we’re both so supportive in all aspects off all our careers. More and more porn stars are connecting with fans and communities with a social media presence, and you seem to have a very loyal fan base. Do you think that’s a necessity for any performer? God yes! I think it’s hard to do well and live in the shadows these days. It’s hard to get your name out amongst the hundreds of other performers. You have to build a little fame and a fan base and also connect with fans so they can see the real you and also be attracted to other things you do in say your everyday life. They like to see what we’re up to. Also, for me, I love sharing with them what I’m doing next and sort of dropping behind-the-scenes teasers. Social media is an amazing medium for me to message them and connect with them and also hear what they want to see me do! You recently tweeted some concerns about some recurring themes in pornography (priests and boys, dads and sons) – you said this is something you’d like to see die out? Yes! With the priest thing, I don’t like scenes where priests are fucking altar boys. It wasn’t so long ago there was a huge scandal in the church concerning so many rape cases from years ago coming out. I think porn sometimes normalises and glamourises

what can be a sensitive issue. I also think dad and son scenarios where the guys actually play family isn’t really good either. It promotes incest. Don’t get me wrong, I know guys with daddy turn-ons and like to call their partners “daddy” but that’s not their actual parent - which is what porn simulates. I think sometimes porn recreates illegal and at times sensitive issues and as a performer it’s something I don’t want to do. I think people are better than that. We’re smart enough to create stronger and more interesting dialogue scenes, rather than going with what they know will sell because it’s the forbidden fruit. It’s something I know not everyone is gonna agree with me on, but that’s why we’re all allowed opinions I guess! (laughs) It’s also why I work with Nakedsword and have worked with other companies like Cockyboys or Men.com because they are very good at creative dialogue and great scripts for cast members. On that note, do you think we should encourage more public dialogue about adult film and pornographic content to dispel taboo? I mean, you’re as much an entertainer as any other performer, right? I think that at the moment the porn industry is in a huge change and a lot is moving around and being rethought which is great. Out with old and in with the new. Yes, I am an entertainer but I respect not every model and consumer wants to see dialogue scenes, which is why they will go to other studios. For me, I want to entertain, perform and arouse. Nothing wrong with showing versatility! (laughs) Now you’re making the foray into music – is that something you’d always planned? Most definitely not! I have always been a singer, I did musical theatre for a long time but dance was my major as far as I was concerned. I’ve never seen myself as lead singer material, or producing a song or even an album. I did an interview a while back, talking about my past as performer and then fans demanded I try something. So, I covered Lana Del Rey on YouTube and they all loved it! From there I was asked to release this album. It’s almost finished and honestly I’ve loved it, I wrote each track and it’s been like therapy for me and a great confidence boost. Now I just want to get it out there and perform it all – which I plan to do next year. What inspires you when you’re writing tunes? Mainly from men in my life and also strange or unique things that happen too. I have written about my ex, my fiancé, a friend’s boyfriend - but then I’ve also written about strange party I went to, and a letter a fan had once given me. My next track to be released features an Australian model and it’s about the troubles of fame in certain industries. I do find strength and inspiration from people like Halsey, Lana Del Rey, Demi Lovato and Paramore. Can we expect to see Mickey T in Australia any time soon? Yes! I have dates booked in Perth and Melbourne. Though I would like to stop in Sydney too… Mickey’s singles ‘Pain’ and ‘Diamonds’ from his upcoming album ‘A Puppet’s Lament’ are available now on iTunes and Spotify. Leigh Hill

Maxence Cyrin Novo Piano 2 Maxence Cyrin makes outstandingly beautiful ambient piano music of his own, but where he’s really found a niche is creating piano based renditions of well- known dance music hits and indie classics. On Novo Piano 2 he adapts Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’, Billy Joel’s ‘Eye’s Without a Face’, Bjork’s Hyperballad, Van Halen’s ‘Jump’ alongside tunes from Goldfrapp, The Cure and Flash and the Pan. It’s the perfect soundtrack for a dinner party, letting your guests identify the tunes can be a fun game. GW

Le1f Riot Boi

Bill Ryder-Jones West Kirby County Primary

This is Le1f’s first official album – but he’s released a trio of mix tapes and a couple of EPs in recent years. Here Le1f presents a collection of his murky sounds, intellectually savvy raps and occasional outbursts of angry funk. This is a record that you’ll enjoy if you listen to it closely. On ‘Rage’ the tracks starts off as a bubblegum pop tune before breaking out into an emotionally charged outburst Short instrumental piece ‘Chops’ sounds like the soundtrack to a Hong Kong action film, but most of this album is just Le1f’s very intriguing quality raps. GW

A founding member of The Choral Bill Ryder Jones struck out on a new musical path with his debut record ‘If’, which was completely instrumental. 2013’s ‘A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart’ was a collection of minimalist folk tunes and here on his third record he starts to get a little heavier. It’s a collection of downbeat story based tunes that meander along to sound of scratchy guitars. As the record progress the mood picks up, but only for a moment. Sleepy and sullen. GW

Erykah Badu But You Caint Use My Phone One of the most interesting musical artists around is back and her new mixtape is free to download. With eleven tracks all based around telephone calls, this rapidly recorded record is smooth, captivating and soulful. Badu’s ‘Hello’ has a lot more to say than Adele’s simple voicemail message, as Badu and her baby daddy Andre 3000 slip in and out of a classic Todd Rundgren tune. ‘Cell U Lar Device’ is Badu’s take on Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’, ‘What’s Your Phone Number’ deserves respect for name checking a Muppet, a great collection of tunes. Grimes is back with a brand new album that is, well, totally Grimes. Spanning myriad genres, the album evokes both nostalgia for music past and tantalises what pop could be in the future. The opening track, ‘Laughing And Not Being Normal’, sounds like the eerie ambience of a Japanese RPG from the ‘90s. ‘Kill V. Maim’ sounds like a beautifully insane cheerleader routine, while ‘California’ is an adorable honkytonk-pop ode to The Golden State. ‘Scream’ provides an introduction to Taiwanese rapper Aristophanes whose offbeat flow is intriguing and charming. An erratic, eclectic and excellent album.- LH

music When did you first get into music? What was your first step? When I was a kid I was playing violin at school and then I moved on to guitar. It was an after school class I joined. Then I just got hooked on music. I heard the songs of Simon and Garfunkel actually and that’s what turned me onto writing my own material. I think a lot of fans would be surprised to learn that you actually start writing with the guitar, rather than a keyboard or computer. Yeah, we still write mostly with guitar but also with piano. We try and keep it simple because the idea is not to confuse the technology with the melody so we try to write a good tune on guitar or piano then we convert it into electronic music.

Erasure’s Vince Clarke is no one trick pony. From his work with Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly and more, the multi-talented musician has lost no momentum after over 30 years in the industry. We chatted to Vince about his expansive career.

Do you feel guilty? Is that why we’re speaking today? Andy and I aren’t really show-biz type people, you know? We kept our private lives private, I think that’s all it is. As private people, do you find you are a natural performer or it’s just part of the music business? Andy twists my arm and forces me to dress up in drag! (laughs) I’m not a natural performer at all, which is why it’s an amazing thing that Andy and I got together – because Andy is! When he goes on stage, he’s a natural but that’s not my personality at all. A lot of your work features collaborations – I noticed you have a new track with Jean-Michel Jarre. Yeah! That was really cool actually. He came round my studio in New York – he’s a super nice guy, you know – I was totally flattered to be asked to do this thing. He’s definitely a pioneer and I was totally blown away. Hey, can I tell you a joke? Sure! You really need to think about this one, right? Okay. I’ve recently decided to sell my Theremin.

Putting Erasure together, you put an ad in the Melody Maker to find a collaborator and you met Andy Bell. What exactly were you looking for?

Oh yeah?

The most important thing was someone that could sing with character. We did a lot of auditions over a couple of days but for us, myself and the producer at the time, Andy came before us and shone because he had a real individual style. We didn’t need someone that could sing well, we needed someone that had a personality and Andy fit that bill.

(laughs) Do you really have a Theremin?

Andy gave an interview in the UK recently saying the two of you have a great relationship but you only speak a couple of times a year – he also said you had retired from public life and you don’t do interviews anymore…

Because I haven’t touched it in years. Of course! Don’t you? Is it something you use a lot? No! It’s bloody terrible! I just bought it because it’s cool, you know? Graeme Watson ‘Always: The Very Best of Erasure’ is available now in stores and online

Well! He’s only saying that because he has to do all the interviews.

FILM REVIEWS COME IN FOR A MEAL & LIVE MUSIC! Carol (MA)

Suffragette

Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) is a wealthy New York mother who is separated from her husband. She is stylish, sensuous and seductive and not interested in her desperate husband Harge (Kyle Chandler) since discovering the joys of a lesbian relationship. It is 1952 when Carol meets shy shop girl Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) while shopping for a Christmas present for her young daughter. Their clandestine courtship blossoms as Carol’s husband uses a ‘morality clause’ to fight for custody of the daughter. Haynes cleverly reveals snippets of a lesbian subculture in an era where women had few powers and homosexual women had none. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel written in 1952, everything in this film of forbidden love is perfect – the settings, the costumes, the music, the drama and the magnificent acting. Cate Blanchett is certain to be the focus of the awards season for her emotionally-charged portrayal.

When a group of women fought for the right to vote early in the 20th century, they found that they had to resort to ‘unlady-like behaviour’ to get noticed as war was the only thing men listened to. Although political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) led the charge, it was women like Emily Davison (Natalie Press) who made huge sacrifices. Alongside the real-life characters, screenwriter Abi Morgan (Iron Lady) includes fictional laundress Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan) to carry the Suffragette story. The film shows vicious battles with domestic violence, sexual assault in the workplace, police brutality, imprisonment and hunger strikes as almost everyday events in such depressing times. The cost is high but fortunately the women’s dedication is eventually rewarded. This film is a fitting tribute to a small group of inspirational women. The end credits are particularly eye-opening as they reveal when women in various countries were able to vote.

The Program (M)

By the Sea (MA)

If you saw Alex Gibney’s 2013 documentary ‘The Armstrong Lie’, then you know the story of Stephen Frear’s latest film. This is where Irish sports journalist Davis Walsh (Chris O’Dowd) becomes obsessed with the idea that the seven times Tour de France winner is taking performance-enhancing drugs even though no one agrees with him. Walsh’s paper the Sunday Times even has to pay Armstrong after his complaint of libel is successful. Walsh eventually reveals the most successful doping program in cycling history and Fears has based his film on Walsh’s book ‘Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong’. Ben Foster is a good match to play the almost untouchable drug cheat as the film takes the audience to places that cameras didn’t access – buying drugs, surgeries, team caravans, training sessions and locked hotel rooms. While Armstrong is still highly unlikeable, the film does show why the lie survived for so long.

When a successful graduate of the Hollywood system decides to write, direct and star in her own film with her husband, who is going to be the voice of reason when it turns out to be a self-indulgent vanity project? Angelina Jolie’s third directorial effort crawls along without plot or character development and a woman sitting next to me said that she could have been at home watching TV instead of wasting her time. Set in the 1970s, married couple failed writer Roland (Brad Pitt) and retired dancer Vanessa (Jolie) are staying at a small town on the French seaside. The chemistry of Mr and Mrs Smith is long gone as the characters write themselves off on alcohol and prescription drugs. There’s minimal dialogue as the camera lingers on Jolie’s face and reconstructed breasts. Newlyweds (Melanie Laurent and Melvil Poupaud) fail to spice up the film, even when they can be spied through a hole in the wall between the rooms.

During our regular research, we at OUTinPerth made a surprising discovery this month. Spending some time on the Marriage Alliance website, we noticed a figure we had seen somewhere before. An image of a man, contemplating one of the organisation’s insipid flyers, seemed familiar to us. Yes, he was a stock image. Originally perplexed by Rubik’s cube, our friend had been remodeled by the Marriage Alliance to insert their infamous ‘iceberg’ anti-equality flyer, which begged the question – just what else has this man pondered?

Bears Perth have busy over the last few months, last night they launched their ‘Bear2Bear’ 2016 calendar. The launch of the calendar was accompanied by a photographic exhibition at Gallery 281 in Maylands.

Charlie Perth @ GALSWA

Current Mr Australasian Bear Micheal Heap launched the calendar which has been a labor of love for many months. The

calendar features portraits of local community members created by local photographer Gavin Chadwick. Part proceeds from the project will go to supporting the Perth Homeless Support Group, an organisation that provides practical support to homeless people. Copies of the calendar cost $25.00 and can be purchased by contactingmick@bear2bear.com.au

Favourite breakfast spot?

As a teen, what posters did you have on your wall?

In my car on the way to work. Muesli bar, apple and a sugar- Bay City Rollers. I was such an obvious gay. free V. What makes you lose your temper? What movie makes you cry? People who think they are better than everyone else. Moulin Rouge. (Come What May)

What word do you say too much? Sorry
