DOLLY DIAMOND 09
The artist is dead, but he WIll live forever David Bowie has died. His unexpected death comes just days after he released his newest work, an album titled with a symbol, a black star. A symbol that takes on new meaning with the announcement of his death came at the end of an 18 month battle with cancer. You can’t encapsulate Bowie’s work, or his wide spread influence, there’s just too much too take in. Last year I was walking around an exhibition of this work at Melbourne’s Australian Centre for Moving Image (ACMI) where you could spend hours appreciating his music, videos, clothes, film performance, music videos. Hours could be lost just looking at one of his notebooks of scrawled lyrics. Just a single element of his creative output could capture your undivided attention. A friend said the other day, “Bowie’s only ever done one performance, and it’ll end the day he dies.” At the time I thought about that profound statement, and now that that moment is unexpectedly upon us, I suddenly realise it’s just not true. People will be exploring, discovering and re-interpreting his work forever. His work will be reinterpreted, recreated and take on a life of its own. Bowie’s ever changing cast of characters, styles and sounds means that there is something for everyone still to discover and enjoy.
BRIEFS 12
If you’re familiar with his Ziggy Stardust period, dive into the work he created in the ’80s as Tin Machine, if you liked his drum n bass influenced album ‘Earthling’ go and explore the instrumental tracks on ‘Low’. If you thought his last album was sublime, take a listen to his soundtrack for ‘The Buddha of Suburbia’. There’s always more Bowie to discover. Bowie made a significant contribution to queer culture. His forthright statements about sexuality helped foster discussions about sex and gender. He empowered people to be express themselves, being different became an asset not a shortcoming. It was a love of David Bowie that motivated a teenage George O’Dowd to become Boy George. Without Bowie there would have been no template of constant reinvention for Madonna to follow. Without Bowie, would be no Suede have had any hits?
SAVAGES 30
Bowie was an artist, in the truest meaning. His death has brought people to tears. This isn’t the phenomenon of online mass condolences that we often see for celebrities leaving. This is the mourning of a great artist’s passing. Graeme Watson editor@outinperth.com

The Gay Community Periodic Survey is upon us! Since 1996 tens of thousands of gay and bisexual men across Australia have been asked to cough up the most intimate and personal details about their sex lives. And every two years, hundreds of Perth guys put pen to paper and do just that. But why would they? And why should you do it?
The acclaimed duo EastEnd Cabaret return to Fringe World with two very different shows. Last year EastEnd Cabaret brought their show ‘Perverts’ to Fringe World. Featuring the characters Bernadette Byrne, a European chanteuse, and Victor Victoria, a fauxbilateral ‘hermaphrodite’. This year performers Jennifer Byrne and Victoria Falconer-Pritchard return with ‘Perverts’ and a whole new show ‘Yeti Dive Bar’ which see them take on some new personas. The duo are acclaimed for their risqué original songs, character comedy, raucous live shows and innovative audience participation. Jennifer Byrne said that it was true that nobody was safe when they look out into the audience for some helpers.
“I like to get up close and personal with the audience, I want it to get to know them. We want it to feel like we’re all friends. It’s not like it’s a play where they sit passively and we perform, it’s a conversation.” Byrne says the trick for finding someone who’ll embrace audience participation is look for someone with “smiley eyes”. The duo introduce a cavalcade of characters in their new show from an overly-amorous yeti to a sleazy severed head and troupe of psychedelic nuns. Head to www.fringeworld.com.au to find the details for ‘Perverts’ and ‘Yeti Dive Bar’. Visit the OUTinPerth website to read our full interview with Jennifer and Victoria.
The questions are pretty nosy. Oh, you’ll be asked some pretty candid questions: about your HIV status, how many sexual partners you’ve had this year, what kind of sex you had with them, whether you were safe – and whether you knew your partner’s HIV status. You’ll be asked about how many STIs you might have contracted this year, and whether you shared that information with your sexual partners. And you’ll be asked what you know about PEP, and PrEP. (Technically, the survey focuses on sexual behaviour, nature of sexual relationships, HIV testing practices and sero-status, aspects of social attachment to the gay community, and a number of demographic items. But potato, patahto, right?) Far too intrusive, clearly. So why do it? Well firstly, it’s completely and totally and utterly anonymous – it’s impossible to match any questionnaire to any person. In fact, no
one in Perth will ever see the survey paper again once you’ve filled it out. Once you’ve sealed the envelope, it’s whisked off to the researchers. Secondly, and importantly, the results of the survey creates a snapshot in time: of sexual attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and knowledge of gay and bisexual men in our community. This is vitally important to directly inform the development of effective health promotion and community development strategies right here in Western Australia. The results enable the WA AIDS Council to respond to important changes in sexual negotiation and behaviour, and what HIV means today in the gay community. But hey, loads of you guys already know this. Some of you good folk have been (anonymously) open about your sex lives every couple of years for a couple of decades now. So if you’re approached this month at Fairday or at your local hangout by a charming individual wielding a clipboard and asked if you wouldn’t mind filling in a survey, think about the positive impact your five minute contribution can have on the community around you, and go for it. culture The first part ‘Snake’ is dance ritual exploring male bodies, while the second part of the program ‘Bad Adam’ is poetry-driven theatre exploring the ins and outs of cruising strangers for sex, validation and intimacy.
Queer performance artist Dosh Luckwell is delivering a double bill show during the Fringe World season which explores serpents and sexuality.
OUTinPerth caught up with Luckwell ahead of his hometown return to talk about his latest works. How do you feel about snakes, do they fascinate you or scare you? Besides the time when I was a kid and saw a snake attack my cat, snakes on the whole fascinate me rather than scare me. I was recently in Queensland in a mate’s rainforest shack and we were visited most nights by the same snake. It was quite mesmerising watching it move. I swear if it could talk I would have done anything it asked me to. For the show, I am more interested in snakes on a
Your show has been described as confessional, is there anything in your life you’re not prepared to share with an audience? Yes, there is. There are parts of my life that I know would make a great story or performance that I am hesitant to put out there. Not so much because I am ashamed or unwilling to talk about the experiences, rather they involve the private lives of others in ways that I could not conceal their identities. It’s a question of whether telling the story is worth hurting people close to you. Do you think the LGBTIQ community talks more about sex than the rest of the population? Maybe. I definitely think the rest of the population, over many years, has spoken more about LGBTIQ people’s sex lives than queers
I am becoming less obsessed about getting lots of sex and more interested in the quality of it. symbolic level. Especially the idea of shedding skin and renewal. For example, in ‘Snake’ there is lots of removing of layers of clothing, peeling apples and actually peeling “skin” off. How do you feel about sex, has it ever fascinated or scared you? I was fascinated with sex pre-virginity; stealing my mum’s karma sutra books into the toilet for a look. More recently my appreciation for erotic imagery led me to write a thesis on pornography as well as writing erotica. I find now I am becoming less obsessed about getting lots of sex and more interested in the quality of it. ‘Bad Adam’ is very much about the getting of sex.
have had opportunity to – and often in a very negative way. Perhaps LGBTIQ peoples’ more recent openness to talk publicly about sex is a response to that; a desire to reclaim their love and sex as a positive. I see that in a lot of queer art and performance. That said, straight people do actually talk about sex A LOT too. It’s just not the only thing people are expecting to hear from them. ‘Snake / Bad Adam’ is part of Fringe World and starts on the 27th of January. Why not?’ “I went out and went shopping, I already had this black sequined suit, (very Liza), and I went out and got some shoes, which we probably only an inch off the ground (very sensible), and I did the gig and absolutely loved it.” Dalton said.
Dolly Diamond has been the Queen of Melbourne’s Moomba Festival and graced the cover of long standing east coast queer magazine ‘The Star Observer’, she’s a household name in gay abodes in Sydney and Melbourne.
The career changing moment 15 years ago sent the performers career on a whole new trajectory, but his upcoming Fringe World show will be his first appearance in Perth as Dolly Diamond. “I love coming somewhere new,” Dalton laughs, “you can bring out the dead and do all your old jokes, because nobody here’s heard them before.” Dalton said he’s excited to bring his show to Perth sharing his commitment to win over Perth audiences. The show ‘Alive and Intimate’, which has sold out in other cities, is one where the performer likes to get close to the audience and make a connection.
This year she’s heading to the West Coast and delivering her acclaimed cabaret show ‘Alive and Intimate’ as part of Fringe World. OUTinPerth sat down with the man behind the makeup, Michael Dalton.
“I like intimidating people in the right way, winning them over.” Dalton said, “I love the people who get into participating, the willing ones are brilliant, when they have something to contribute I’m like – ‘bring it out!’.
Before he discovered his alter-ego Dalton performed in many well-known musicals and shows both in Australia and the UK. He’s played many different roles in ‘The Rocky Horror Show’, performing the show in Australia, England and Europe.
Dalton said when he first began performing Dolly he took inspiration from a series of strong women.
Dalton’s career first began when he was a youngster, he joined the local choir when he was seven and on the advice of his choir master he successfully auditioned to join the West End production of ‘Oliver!’ “I was Oliver on Mondays and Tuesday” Dalton recalls, “I got six pounds for each performance, my Mum and Dad probably paid more to get me in and out of London for the performances.” Dalton said he wasn’t an overly ambitious child performer, and his parents were not the clichéd stage parents. While he loved being Oliver on Mondays and Tuesdays, he wasn’t plotting to take over any of the other days of the week. The experience did however kick off a career in the theatre.
“Those women that a lot of us gays look up to and laugh, I do love a bit of Liza, and I loved Judy Garland, but also my Mum was a strong women who I always admired. I think you try to encapsulate some of that confidence yourself. Women like Joan and Jackie Collins, those strong camp role models. “I think gay men like a strong put together woman,” Dalton said, “We probably like a strong put together man too!” the performer added breaking into a laugh. “I think we want to sleep with the man and be more like those women.” “I don’t necessarily love putting on all the make-up, but I love becoming Dolly.” Dalton declared. Dolly Diamond ‘Alive and Intimate’ starts on February 9th, find out all the details at www.fringeworld.com.au
Dalton explains that his character Dolly Diamond first came to life many years ago when he was working in the United Kingdom. “I was living in London and agent mate of mine said she had a gig coming up in Wales – in Cardiff – and asked if I’d

“ZE”: QUEER AS FUCK! is a one-person, genderqueer, kinky, femmesexual, polyminded, gay-divorcee PRIDE parade through the real life of Michelle/Ryan. Jessica McKerlie’s Fringe World show ‘Gender Spanner’ explores gender fluidity. Armed with a ukulele, spinning plates and an array of costumes that traverse gender stereotypes, McKerlie presents a smorgasbord of original music, burlesque routines and poetry with a common thread: Are you a man? Are you a woman? Are you sure? You have a ukulele in the show, this always seems to be a popular instrument with Fringe performers. I think the best thing about it is that it’s carryon luggage. It’s an instrument, it’s a toy, it’s easy to replace if it breaks and you can take it on a plane. Have you ever gone all rock n’ roll and smashed the ukulele at the end of the show? I haven’t, but I do play a Black Sabbath cover in the show, I like playing heavy metal covers, so it could be in my future. How did you show ‘Gender Spanner’ come about? I lived in London for a few years and while I was there I was part of an amazing production called ‘Puff Ball’ which was an LGBT youth circus project, it was just amazing. It was a real eye opener to be involved in something that had
Arts Council support and was supporting young queer artists. We worked together over a year, so you got to know everyone really well. It was the first time I heard the terms genderqueer and genderfluid and it got me thinking. I was writing a lot at the time and I realised a lot of my writing was about coming out and gender. So I put all that all together and made a show. A lot of people seem to struggle with the concept of fluidity, that idea that things can change, we seem to be pressured to ‘lock things down’. I think it’s a lot to wrap your head around the first time you hear it. It some ways it’s still a fairly new concept. Society is very much ‘male, female – tick a box’. It’s on every job application, every form we fill out, the first question is, put yourself in a box. If it’s not something you’ve heard about it’s hard to understand. For me, the more I hung about people who thought this way, the better I felt, they became my family. ‘Gender Spanner’ is at The Ellington Jazz Club from 16th February, head to www.fringeworld.com for details. “Ze” (the pronoun most commonly used by gender non-conforming folk) rips the bandage away from hir startling American Puritan upbringing in a multiple “coming out” process. Along the way ze discovers a beloved community that at times is just as ridiculous and pigeon-holed as the one ze’s left. The artist who is known as Michelle/Ryan embraces the full spectrum of hir gender. In the show ze both uses and parodies the labels meant to help an individual embrace their truth in a modern world. Desperate for definition. “Ze” confronts stereotypes both within and without in a celebration that exposes the complex tension between being authentic to oneself and belonging. Speaking to OUTinPerth Michelle / Ryan said the autobiographical show shared hir journey, and gave a nod towards the future. The performer said they understood why coming out stories are always popular with people in the LGBTI+ community. “We’re all looking for people who are a bit like us, the world’s changing quite a bit. Now you see young folks coming out at ages that I couldn’t even fathom. But also now we’re entering a time when you don’t have to come out, which is fine too.” Michelle / Ryan said.
“One of the things I say though my show, it’s not just a one time coming out process. Of the course of time how you might describe yourself might change, it might not be static. You might find layers of yourself which reveal other facets of you.” Michelle / Ryan said her experience of using gender neutral pronouns is still quite a new experience. “I haven’t been out very long as gender queer, there are some places where I am just Ryan and I ask people to use male pronouns, then there are other places where people have known me for a long time and they call me ‘she’’ and call me Michelle. My really cool friends and partner are really into gender neutral pronouns. “What is upsetting is when I’m with a group of people and they make a comment that’s really specifically about women or about men, that they think that I’m automatically going to relate to because they see me as one gender or the other, they think I’m the same as them, and I feel confused by it.” Michelle / Ryan said. “The whole pronouns thing is still new to me, and I might feel differently a few years from now, but at the moment I still get excited when some uses the pronouns I prefer.” Michelle / Ryan see. ‘ZE: Queer as Fuck!’ opens at Fringe World on January 24th, head to www.fringeworld.com.au for details.

Black Swan State Theatre Company begins 2016 with ‘Loaded’ a double-bill of fresh new works.
The magical Zatanna has mystified audiences across the world and has returned to Perth for two brand new Fringe World performances. We chatted to the magician ahead of her dual premieres. You have two magical performances at this year’s Fringe World, can you tell us how they differ?
Writer, actor, director Will O’Mahony’s recent theatrical output has been highly lauded, his 2014 production ‘Great White’ was declared one of the best plays of the year, and last year the show toured the state’s south west. He also delivered a powerful performance in Black Swan’s production of David Mamet’s ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’. Now O’Mahony is directing a new show that he wrote. ‘Tonsils and Tweezers’ will debut as part of the double bill program alongside Gita Bezard’s new work ‘Girl Shut Your Mouth’. As the show passed the half-way mark in rehearsals, O’Mahony chatted to OUTinPerth. “It’s feeling really good, it’s nice to be the first show of the year. It has a real sense of occasion.” O’Mahony declared. “Fringe World is going to be really exciting, plus it’s not often you get a double bill of plays.” O’Mahony said the atmosphere in the company was electrifying as both shows got ready for their debut. “It’s interesting because both shows are new works, we’re running around making changes and as I’m sure you appreciate, making a new work is a very different task to staging a play that’s already been in existence.” The writer / director said he is was very open to the play changing while it was in the rehearsal process noting that he loved the collaborative process; ‘There’s a lot of traffic in the rehearsal room with scripts being changed, but it’s exciting, and a little bit scary.” O’Mahony said. The play tells the story of longtime friends Tonsils and Tweezers who are heading off to their ten year high school union. One of the
friends announces he has a sure fire plan to make sure nobody talks about what they’ve been up to, and it’s something that might change their long standing friendship forever. O’Mahony said the inspiration for the play came from his own school reunion approaching and a growing fear of dread. “You don’t know who’s going to turn up, and that got me thinking about all the people I went to school with and what had become of them, and what they’d done, who would be there, who wouldn’t.” The play is a product of the theatre company’s commitment to supporting new writers. Their Emerging Writers group allowed a number of participants to collaboratively develop their skills and produce fresh new works. The program has also allowed the writers to collaborate with actors from the WA Academy of Performing Arts graduating class. O’Mahony admitted he was feeling some trepidation about the show’s opening night, not because the audience are hoping for him to deliver another great show, but because the characters he’s created are a little different. “I feel some pressure, probably because the main character in this play is a real anti-hero. I’m really hoping that audiences go with him, and I’m sure they will, but he’s a bit darker than those I’ve written up until this point.” O’Mahony said. ‘Loaded’ opens on January 14th at the Studio Underground and runs through to February 4th. ‘Magic from Z to A’ is a big scale show with big illusions, like levitating someone on stage or putting someone in a box and pushing swords inside with lots of dance and interactivity. This one’s a lot of fun, even people who aren’t crazy about magic will like this show – it’s not all about the magic, it’s about the show! ‘Theatre of the Mind’ is more hardcore magic. There’s no big props on stage, just a few cards. It’s going to be a lot more about the mind; mindreading, mentalism and that sort of thing. It’s a little more intellectual but it’s still fun. Magic as performance has a long history – how do you keep it fresh and exciting? By changing the presentation. Something I’ve noticed in my experience is that the classics never die. Sometimes I’ll be doing a big illusion show and people will come and tell me their favourite thing was the linking rings. It’s been done for thousands of years and people still think it’s fabulous. I don’t do the rings in my latest show but I still keep some classics like levitation. I know you’ve taken your shows to China and Japan, what have you learned from doing magic on the road? There’s good and bad performances everywhere you go. I love Japanese magic because their way of doing it is very different, they keep it very visual. I wouldn’t say I picked up any tricks but I’ve certainly been influenced in some way. ‘Zatanna, Magic from Z… to… A’ and ‘Zatanna’s Theatre of the Mind’ begin Tuesday 4th February at The Hellenic Club of WA. The jet-set troupe of vaudevillian circus performers have been finding new fans around the globe but declare Perth’s ‘Fringe World’ one of their favourite stops on their never-ending tour. Last year the performers arrived at the start of Fringe World to find their entire season was sold out, so great was the word-of-mouth from their previous trips. The group’s leader Fez Faanana told OUTinPerth there is something special about Perth audiences. “People in Perth are up for a bit of silliness, they understand the ridiculousness of our show.” Faanana said. The all-male show which combines elements of drag, circus and burlesque is always a riotous affair. They started life as a late night event in a Brisbane speak-easy before developing their work into a full scale show.

culture The show brings together ringleader Faanana’s drag alter-ego Shivannah, Mark ‘Captain Kidd’ Winmill, Australia’s star of boylesque, performance artist Dallas Delaforce, acrobatic burlesque performer – Evil Hate Monkey, trapeze artist Louis Briggs and Thomas Worrell who specializes in ariel hoop, contortion and hand balancing. Since they last hoisted up their circus tent and threw their crazy party filled with shenanigans in Perth, they boys have been to Adelaide, Berlin, Paris and London and even took their show to The Seychelles. They’ve done shows in Trafalgar Square for London Pride and even played the massive Glastonbury music festival. Faanana says there are some advantages to performing in warmer locations like Perth and tropical islands. “It’s easier to warm up, but it’s such a point of contention amongst the cast.” Faanana said, “We’re always arguing about the temperature of the theatre, it can’t be too hot or the drag queens lose their lashes, but it can’t be too cold where the acrobats get stiff.” The show has gathered such a great reputation over the last few years that now many up and coming circus performers aspire to join their ranks. Faanana said the performers in the show needed a mix of skills and attitude.
People in Perth are up for a bit of silliness, they understand the ridiculousness of our show.
‘We get lots of requests from performers who want to join the show, with Briefs - the all-male circus, burlesque, drag production – I think it’s about being a highly skilled performer but you also have to be clever about how you present your work. ‘Aside from what we do onstage being part of our team is also about your attitude off stage. It’s about how we operate as a company, I always say to new boys who come onboard, ‘we try to adopt the principle of being gentlemen’; of being good human beings.” Faanana said the cast embraced the long standing spirit of circus, variety and cabaret by keeping their feet on the ground. “You’ve got to keep your feet on the ground and remember what it is you do as an artist. It’s about celebrating the freak and the alternative, embracing a different lifestyle.” Faanana said. “We’re always about celebrating diversity with skill”. Grab your tickets to Briefs main show and their late night club show at www.fringeworld.com.au. The show opens on February 2nd for 10 performances only. Graeme Watson

Writer and performer Adriano Cappalletta is heading to Perth for his one-man show this February as part of The Blue Room Theatre’s Summer Nights programme. The Parisian trained clown is a man of many talents, all of which he draws on for his one man show, ‘This Boy’s In Love’. We spoke to Adriano ahead of his all-singing, all-dancing exploration of the urban jungle that is contemporary gay dating.
Tell us about ‘This Boy’s In Love’ It’s billed as a sort of one-man gay rom-com and I wrote it because I had to do a comedy night and I thought what do I know – because as they say, write what you know – I know I’m single, I’m 25, I’m gay and I’ve never been in love. So I thought, “What would it be like to play out the experience of the ultimate boyfriend.” So this isn’t a tale of tragedy and love lost as we tend to see in queer love stories? Yeah, I guess it comes from a place of not seeing a lot of gay stories that don’t have a lot of tragedy in them. Whenever you watch a gay story there’s disease involved, or violence or loneliness or death. So I
thought “What would it be like to have a love story that’s just really beautiful, normal and personal. A happy ending!” We almost expect to hear a sad tale when hearing stories from queer perspectives. Totally. It doesn’t have to be sad. I know so many gay people who are happy. Happy being gay, happy in their relationships. We just don’t see enough of those stories, and I think we really should be telling them. With the rise of equal marriage rights around the world, do you think we’ll see more positive stories like this?
women and men have come to me and said “Wow, you’ve expressed exactly how I’ve felt.” That surprised me too. Wanting to fall in love, being lonely, they’re universal themes and I think that’s what’s so great about samesex marriage. Its saying love is universal, and I think as gay people we need to remind ourselves of that too. Catch ‘This Boy’s In Love’ at The Blue Room from Tuesday 2nd February – Saturday 6th February. Tickets available from Fringeworld.com.au.
I hope so! What I found doing the show in Sydney – the people who’ve come to see it haven’t responded to it as a gay story. Straight

Southbound raise funds for fire victims
Abetz: Gender equality should apply to parenting Southern River MLA Peter Abetz has highlighted a WA government report that advocates for more women in business and argued that gender diversity is equally essential in the family. Mr Abetz highlighted to his followers on Facebook that the government’s ‘2015 Women’s Report Card’ argues that women should have equal representation in the workforce and on company boards. Mr Abetz suggested the same standards should also apply to the make-up of families. “Strange: As a Government we put out the report on the status and progress of women. We are told that there should be equal number of women as men on the boards of companies, that there should be more male primary school teachers etc… Why? We are told we should strive for this because each of the sexes bring their unique perspectives. … But the advocates for Same Sex Marriage are busy trying to convince us that in raising children, it suddenly makes no difference at all!” Mr Abetz wrote on Facebook. The conservative politician was referring to a recently released 2015 Women’s Report Card. A tri-annual report that measures the representation of women in the workplace and where women are being paid equally. Later the conservative MP posted a second comment comparing the need for gender equality in the workplace to his belief that families should have both a mother and a father. Diversity adviser Conrad Liveris said Mr Abetz was looking at the issues very superficially. “Increasing the number of women in management harnesses the different perspectives that men and women, through socialised differences and experiences, can bring to organisations. A body of research is emerging, such as that from Melbourne University’s Cordelia Fine, that show neuropsychological differences between men and women are minor. “By conflating gender equality and LGBT rights Abetz fails
Greens renew call for PrEP approval The Australian Greens have renewed their calls for the federal government to remove barriers to accessing HIV-prevention medication, Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) following reports of an 85 per cent increase in sales in Australia from overseas suppliers. The treatment has been approved for use in the USA, France, Kenya and South Africa, and trials have been conducted in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The treatment is not yet officially approved for use in Australia and it has not been added to the
to see the nuances in society and limits our capacity for inclusion and innovation. “The engagement of people in non-traditional fields – women in executive roles, men in stay-at-home – aids better decisions in and for society.” Mr Liveris told OUTinPerth. OUTinPerth spoke to Mr Abetz and asked him if comparing diversity in the workplace to relationships was a case of comparing ‘apples and pears?’ Mr Abetz said it was reasonable to compare our expectation for the workplace with family dynamics. “In terms of equality in the workplace, that’s one part of gender equality, when they say that we should have equal representation of men and women on boards and that type of thing, the reason that is given is not that people are equal but women bring a different perspective to things than men. “We recognise the uniqueness of the sexes in that area, but when it comes to parenting by same sex couples they say there is no difference. You can’t have the cake and eat it at the same time.” Mr Abetz said that while gender role models include other family and community members, it is the time spent with parents that have the most effect on children. Mr Abetz added that more quantitative research was needed, but there were certainly a lot of stories had been published highlighting that being raised by same sex parents had caused challenges for people later in life. “The theme that comes through is ‘Hey, I missed out on something, when I got married I didn’t know how to relate to my husband, (or the other way round).’ Those things are real issues.” Mr Abetz said. WA’s Minister for Women’s Interests Liza Harvey was contacted for comment.
The annual Southbound festival had to be cancelled due to the massive Waroona bush fire, but that didn’t stop the organisers and some of the best bands on the line-up coming together to raise money to help those affected by the fires. The Southbound Fire Fundraiser saw local bands Koi Child, Birds of Tokyo and San Cisco team up with international headliners Bloc Party, Django Django and Disclosure to put on an outstanding show at HBF stadium. The event raised over $150,000 for the relief effort. Sunset Event’s director Dave Chitty thanked all the patrons and businesses that showed support for the event. “We were utterly overwhelmed at the willingness of local businesses, suppliers, staff and our local and international artists who dropped everything to make this event happen last night. The people of West Aus wasted no time throwing their support and money behind this event to help out our friends in the South West through this devastating time.” Mr Chitty said. Graeme Watson

PM says no equal marriage in his lifetime
Italian MP: Surrogacy is like a sex crime
The Prime Minister of Fiji has responded to calls for marriage equality in the island nation, telling media that “Fiji does not need that rubbish.” Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama was responding to comments from human rights activist Shamima Ali, the head of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre. Ali spoke on Fijian television, calling for the government to consider same-sex marriage. Fijian lawyer and LGBT activist Aman Ravindra-Singh suggested the PM had breached Section 26 of the country’s constitution by inciting hatred towards the LGBT community. “Under section 65 there is a particular offence called inciting communal antagonism. This issue has now flared within our community and in our society as a whole,” Mr Ravindra-Singh told Pink News “The prime minister has breached section 65 in that his action has incited communal antagonism and he should be investigated and charged.”
China
Chinese court accepts first same-sex marriage case A gay man in China has successfully lodged a case against a civil affairs office for not allowing him to marry his partner, a first in the country’s history. 26-year-old Sun Wenlin’s case is being lauded as a watershed moment for LGBTIQ rights in China, where same-sex marriages are not legal. “I think from a legal point of view, we should be successful,” Sun told Reuters. “Our marriage law says there is the freedom to marry and gender equality. These words can be applied to same-sex marriage.” Mr Sun attempted to marry his male partner in China’s Furong district, where he was denied on the basis of their sexuality. Sun’s case has been accepted by a Changsha court – the capital of Hunan province.
Angelino Alfano, Italy’s Minister for the Interior, has compared surrogacy to sex crimes. The conservative politician who is a long time campaigner against gay rights , is also against un-wed heterosexual couples having children. Surrogacy is “the most vile, illegal trade that man has invented,” Alfano told Italy’s Avvenire newspaper. Italy is the last major Western nation to deny same-sex couples rights on issues such as parenthood. It was criicised in 2015 by by the European Court of Human Rights for failing to legislate on the issue. Surrogacy is currently illegal in Italy, punishable by fines and up to two years in prison.

Virginia Republican Delegate Mark Cole has lodged a bill that would make schools ensure students are using facilities designed for their “correct anatomical sex.” If enacted, the law would forbid transgender and non-binary students from using restrooms that match their gender. The bill, known as House Bill 663, uses the definition of anatomical sex that describes it as “the physical condition of being male or female, which is determined by a person’s anatomy.” “Local school boards shall develop and implement policies that require every school restroom, locker room, or shower room that is designated for use by a specific gender to solely be used by individuals whose anatomical sex matches such gender designation,” the bill reads. Students breaking the proposed law could face fines of $50 USD. The bill offers such alternatives as “controlled access” to unoccupied restrooms or designating individual students a “single stall restroom or shower.”

There had been no electricity for a few hours. No TV, no radio, no warning. By the time Marcus had grabbed his wallet and beloved cat, the wall of fire was just two streets away and thick smoke had turned day to night. Leaving his house in McDowell Street, Yarloop, and driving down Railway Parade past the historic workshops, the roar of fire and raining embers made it clear that little would survive. Racing down Railway Parade, Marcus saw a woman standing, bewildered, in her front yard holding a garden hose but without water. He stopped and cried out, “What are you doing?” Dazed and confused the woman said, “I don’t know what to do!?” “Get in your car now and GO!” Marcus shouted, as the bushland behind her house erupted into flame. Startled into reality, the woman jumped into her car and followed Marcus down the winding back roads through to the Forrest Highway and on to the Australind evacuation centre. Like Lot’s wife, Marcus stopped briefly to look back at Yarloop when he was just outside of town, and witnessed the firestorm in full fury as wooden heritage houses burst into flame and gas bottles exploded. After 11 years living in this sleepy hollow he knew it was over.
Having moved to WA from Melbourne in 1984, Marcus Lindsay spent several years living in Perth, bar tending at the Red Lion Hotel, cheffing in a few Mount Lawley eateries and working for Homeswest as a painter. However, his desire to live in the southwest came true in 2004 when he was able to buy a dilapidated worker’s cottage in Yarloop. “I had to borrow $100,000 to make it liveable, but my handyman skills made this possible and for the first time in my life I wasn’t renting,” Marcus said. Being ‘The only gay in the village’ was never a problem for him, though he admits he led a fairly private life. “I kept to myself but the townsfolk were friendly if ever I needed anything.” In 2014 Marcus was successful in prosecuting an Anglican priest in Melbourne for sexual abuse as a child. The following year he gave evidence at the Royal Commission.
“Living in the peace of Yarloop helped me focus on my past and pursue these issues through the courts. When I flew to Melbourne to appear before the Royal Commission, locals in Yarloop pitched in to get me a suit, tie and spending money for the three days over east,” he said. Living a solitary life in the country, Marcus struggled with post traumatic stress disorder and related alcoholism, exacerbated in 2006 when three local thugs invaded his house and bashed him with a lump of wood, breaking his jaw. They are in jail now. “It’s sad to say goodbye to Yarloop but I can close that chapter of my life now. My insurance will allow me to build a new home in Busselton and start again. I have survived worse than this and I won’t let it get me down,” he said. Brian Greig

Connections Nightclub celebrated their 40th birthday last month. The massive Birthday party brought politicians, old DJs and regular club goers together to mark the milestone. Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi delivered a speech in which she recalled spending time at the club in her youth. Mrs Scaffidi paid tribute to the late Holly Wood who often accompanied her to the venue. Holly Wood, a veteran entertainment writer for The Sunday Times, passed away in 2009. The Lord Mayor congratulated the owners of the venue on their success over 40 years and said the club had grown and improved over the years. “I’m so proud of what you have done to this beautiful nightclub, you’ve just made it better and better and bigger, it is a very much loved venue in our city and does so much for our city, we are so proud of what you stand for.” Mrs Scaffidi said. Later in the evening the Lord Mayor was spotted ‘busting a move’ alongside Eleni Evangel MLA and federal member for Perth Alannah MacTiernan. Speaking on behalf of the clubs owners, Tim Brown highlighted that the world had certainly changed since the club first opened it’s doors in 1975. When Connections first began it was illegal to be gay in Western Australia, for the fortieth birthday celebrations the room was filled with politicians. Tim Brown said that back in 1975 it would have been hard to envisage the club celebrating a 40th birthday with so many elected representatives in the room. “Over the last forty years Connections has been witness to the most incredible changes in the lives of our people, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, inter sex and all of our allies and friends.” Tim said. In the early years of the club cameras were banned from the venue to protect attendees identities. Tim Brown highlighted that this symbolised one of the biggest changes that has occurred over time, as he noted that his speech would probably be uploaded to social media by audience members within moments of him finishing. “If you think of that change,” Tim said, “that has been our journey. We’ve gone from being in the closet to being out and proud. A fairly big change in forty years.” Tim said Connections had been a forty year party due to the hard work and perseverance of thousands of people. Tim said the most important contributors to the club’s success were his co-owners Peter Robinson, Tracy and Steve Holland and Geoff Hand. Many of the performers from the club’s past returned for the birthday celebrations including drag artists Arpi, Mardi Gras and Electra. The DJ line-up included returning selectors Moosh and Seb Sharp and alongside residents Cinnamon, Milly, JJ, Salut Barbu, Roski and many more.

Tom Ballard’s got a new show, it’s called ‘The World Keeps Happening’. The comedian says the title came from reflecting on the big issues that affect the world and the constant stream of bad news. “It was a weariness that inspired that title, that feeling of, ‘Oh! - the world keeps happening’. You just never get a break.” Ballard told OUTinPerth, “When you think about the state of the world it just feels like it’s just overwhelming in every single direction, from suicidal and homicidal maniacs
who accidently ate some smoked ham, (it was like a double betrayal).” Ballard said. “I’m just trying to figure out how to live a good life and asking ‘is that even possible?’” Lots of things weigh on the comedians mind, from the constant stream of rebooted movies franchises coming out on Hollywood studios, to why constantly scandal plagued politicians never lose their jobs. “So much of writing process for this show was me getting angry about things and then trying to think about a joke that applies.” Ballard laughed. He loved the show, he hung around backstage after and we chatted about Freddie Mercury and their current tour and ‘We Will Rock You” The Musical’, and it was awesome. He is a generous, sweet human being who has no trouble being both a PhD in astro-physics and a rock and roll icon. It was particularly interesting when he wistfully spoke of Freddie and his words plucked him back into real life and out of the abstract conceptual world that megastars who have died before their time often become in our minds. Here was his best mate reminiscing about old times. Dr May also made an appearance on our opening night in London’s Southbank in October. Again, he graciously hung about, chatted and posed with us in photos. What’s the most unappreciated Freddie Mercury / Queen song? I really dig the first album that hardly gets any airplay. Sure, it’s raw and a bit derivative of the early 70‘s rock sound they were upholding but they also contain threads of the genius of what they would become.
The superb cabaret show ‘La Soirée’ returns to Fringe World after a sensational season in 2015. Many of the outstanding performers from are back, alongside new acts, like Mario, Queen of the Circus!
Specifically ‘Keep Yourself Alive’, a Brian May tune that stands out. It’s also of note that nowadays the music business would never continue to invest in a band whose 1st album sold as little as theirs did. It was a different time back then and thankfully companies had more patience.
The bearded juggler with a never-ending love of Queen is one of the new performers, we sent him some questions about moustaches, juggling, partying and his never ending love for Freddie Mercury.
As a career partier, what are your tips for a good night out?
Beards are back in fashion do you think handlebar moustaches will make a comeback soon? I’d like to think so but the beard style seems to say, “I just let my face grow whatever it wants!” And the less maintained it appears, the better. The moustache is a more finely coiffed ornament. I find it ironic that those bushy boring hipster mess-o’-beards are often worn by guys who take more care of their little haircuts than military men.
Know Thyself. For instance, at the hour when obligatory shots are passed around, I will sooner throw one over my shoulder rather than slip over the edge. The hard won knowledge of one’s limits is essential to maintaining health and friendships. Mario, Queen of the Circus appearing in LA SOIRÉE. Mura Masa Soundtrack to a Death
David Bowie
David Bowie’s final album is a symbol, it’s called ‘Black Star’, having spent the weekend listening to this amazing album that combines jazz, electronica and an a myriad of engaging sounds, I gave it 5 stars and noted that Bowie was as interesting as ever. Then came the shock announcement on Monday afternoon that the iconic singer had died. Bowie’s passing puts this work in a whole new light, now the lyrics will be heard in a different way, we’ll read more into it. Listen to this. It’s captivating. GW
The BBC declared Mura Masa an artist to watch 2016, this 2015 Bandcamp release is the musician’s biggest work to date. The beat driven album filled with cut and paste vocals is super smooth. Opening track ‘I’ve Never Felt So Good’ is a sensational R&B tune, while other parts of the record are almost ambient in style. ‘Cloud Claps’ does some impressive things with one of the most overused samples of all time, ‘Shibuya’ is a gorgeous mix of swirling psychedelic sounds and gentle piano tinkering. Laid back and smooth, this is a great collections of tunes. GW
Frida – I Know There’s Something Going On (Lindstrom Remix) to celebrate the ABBA singer’s 70th birthday, some fresh mixes of her solo work Yusuke Yamamoto – Roc Soft Raw filled with vocal cut-ups this house track is cool and mellow Thao and the Get Down – Nobody Dies lazy rock with a great female lead vocal Michael Nau – Winter Beat a little bit of woozy soul folk Paul Weller – Pick it Up (Dub) The Modfather’s new single comes with this cool dub take on the flip side, the Convergence remix is worth checking out too WU15 – Space and Time it’s like you’ve just dropped into a jazz bar in outer space Keep Shelly in Athens – Fractals super chilled out pop Haelos – Pray is trip-hop making a comeback? Far-out Monster Disco Orchestra featuring Arthur Verocal – Step into My Life (M+M mix by John Morlaes) Brazilian disco vibes that will transport you to Studio 54, there’s a great dub version too Breakabot – Get Lost funky tune from forthcoming second album, there’s a great instrumental tune on the flip side Kid 606 – One Unchanging Constant in a World of Variables chill out tune of the month Sarah Cracknell – It’s Never Too Late (Baroque) charming song from the Saint Etienne lead singer Batsch – Together Again a lo-fi indie version of Janet Jackson’s AIDS related tune… there’s more where this came from
Life is a journey, live it beyond YOUR boundries
Tomeka Reid Quartet Tomeka Reid Tomeka Reid is an improvisational jazz musician and her weapon of choice is the cello. This morose and hauntingly beautiful album swings from mellow moments to wild crazy flights of energetic fury. Listen to this driving down the highway late at night or put on the headphones and immerse yourself in the sounds. Sometimes it sounds a little country, sometime avant-guard classical, other times the feeling is predominantly jazz. The combination of manic drums, pulsating bass and wild cello make this quite unique. GW
Download this local bedroom recording from Bandcamp. If you love jangly show gaze indie pop then you’ll find something to treasure in this first release from local band Pretty Vacant. The lyrics are kind of lost in the mix, but it doesn’t sound as if they have anything particularly profound to say. GW
Kindred Self-Titled Three tracks and a remix are offered by Kindred on their first recordings, they’re funky and almost acid jazz. ‘Always’ featuring Alwyn is reminiscent of Brand New Heavies, and the remix by Scrapbook Sam gives the tune a distinctively different feel. ‘Fade’ has a disco vibe and ‘No Words’ is sultry and slick. GW
Villagers Where Have You Been All My Life? This Irish band have put out three albums that have to a great extent failed to garner a great deal of attention. On their most recent record lead singer Conor O’Brien sang straightforward tunes about his experiences as a closeted gay man in Ireland. This new record featured stripped back simplified versions of tunes from their catalogue, exposing the beauty of O’Brien’s lyrics and melodies. Highlights are ‘My Lighthouse’ and ‘The Way’. The Villages also add their name to the long list of artists who’ve covered the existential country tune ‘Witchita Lineman’. GW

In the show Sanderson revisits songs by Leslie Gore, Simple Minds, Kate Bush and more than one by David Bowie.
Chanteuse Becc Sanderson is bringing her show ‘Bx’ to Fringe World, a riotous celebration of her 25 years of treading the chords!
Perth audiences lovingly remember Becc Sanderson from her days, back in the ‘90s, in front of the Sweet Blue Midnights and from her solo albums she released after the popular band’s run. Back then Sanderson was using her much more formal name ‘Elizabeth’ when performing. Today the artist and her family are living in Edinburgh and she’s reverted to her teenage nickname Becc. Our conversation about her show took place just a few hours after the news broke that David Bowie had died. Given several of the singer’s songs are in Sanderson’s show, we began by talking about the iconic singer. “I’m just in bits,” Sanderson confided, “Absolute fucking bits. I do an early morning yoga class and always turn on the radio afterwards, just to catch up on the news, and there were all these tributes coming in… then I suddenly thought ‘They’re talking about him in the past tense?’ I had to pull the car over. It’s devastating.” “There’s no one else on the planet like him, David Bowie is David Bowie!” Sanderson said. “When you look at his work, you never got the impression he was focused on what would sell, he was just following what he was interested in.” Sanderson reflected on the singer’s work and declared that we’re lucky to be alive at the same time of artists like him.

In her show ‘Bx’ Sanderson talks about how particular artists have played a big part of different parts of her life. Sanderson said as a teenager was she comforted by songs from Kate Bush.
January 2016
“Teenage years were particularly difficult for me, so Kate Bush was all about going home, shutting the door, pulling the curtains, putting on her music – and me completely escaping. Her music, like Bowie, it’s a different world, it completely draws you in. Her music is so orchestral, it really draws you in.” Sanderson said. The singer shared that she faced a lot of bullying in High School and said she wonders if when we should give more attention to the perpetrators. “If someone’s being bullied, it’s not just about the victim, it’s also about the bully. Why is the bully behaving that way? We need to look at why people think this behavior is appropriate. Often over here, and I’m not sure if it’s the same in Australia, but I often see a knee-jerk reaction where it’s about punishing the bully. I’m not excusing their behavior, but I often think we’d be better off finding out why that behavior is happening.” Sanderson said, Sanderson said she always looks forward to returning to Perth and said she’s always grateful for the loyal fans of The Sweet Blue Midnights. “I’m always really surprised by it, I feel so honoured, it just seems to be have been an important part of people’s lives those four or five years we were playing. I’m so grateful for people’s support and always make sure there’s a few of The Sweet Blue Midnights songs in the show.” Sanderson said. ‘Bx’ is playing at Fringe World from February 4th for three nights only, head to www.fringeworld.com.au to secure tickets. Nineties dance music star Corona is coming to Perth. After working in a bank in her early 20’s, Brazilian singer Olga De Souza booked a trip to Italy. Here she met some music producers and was asked to lend her vocals to some songs. The band she fronted, Corona, scored a massive hit with ‘Rhythm of the Night’ and followed it with several other Euro-pop hits. Today the singer says everyone calls her Corona, so much that she’s happy to take on the moniker, but when she first headed to Europe becoming a world famous singer was not on her agenda. “I never thought this would happen to me, I just went to Italy to have a good time. I never thought I’d be recording songs, to me it was a little joke. I didn’t think it would be so big and become a worldwide number one.” Corona said. “I don’t know how many times I’ve sung that song now, I even sing it when I’m at home hanging out the washing.” Corona laughs. Despite ‘Rhythm of the Night ‘being her best known sing, Corona picks one of the bands follow up hits as her favourite to perform.
“My favoutite is ‘Baby Baby’, for me it’s about enjoyment and when I sing it now, I sing it very slow, but then I also sing it fast too!’ The ‘90s Mania tour will see Corona performing alongside other well-known performers from the era including C+C Music Factory, Snap and Culture Beat. Corona said she’s not surprised that people flock to ‘90s reunion shows. “The ‘90s were so much fun and people keep in their hearts because we all had so much joy and fun. “Now people share that with their sons and daughters so our shows have a lot of young people who have learned about their songs from their parents.” Corona said. Corona tell us that she’s incredibly excited to be heading to Australia for the first time saying she has butterflies in her stomach ahead of the trip. ‘I cannot wait to be in Australia!” Corona screams with enthusiasm. ‘90s Mania is at Metro City on Friday 19th March 2016, tickets available from www.oztix.com.au

music It’s that feeling of ‘about time’, you spend so long thinking about it, and there’s that weird gap of after you’ve done all the work of recording it, and producing the whole thing, and then there’s that build up to it being released. Making this record has been quite an open process with the audience, it doesn’t seem like it’s been a big secret, it feels like it’s been very open to people. Last January we spent three weeks in New York and we basically took the sketches of a lot of the new songs on the record and played them to an audience in club shows for three weeks.
What made you choose New York over all the cities you could choose to do that sort of workshopping? I remember the exact point we made this decision. We were sitting outside where we rehearse in London, and we were thinking of recording somewhere different, like another country. But we couldn’t really work it out, and we were in the process of writing and we really just needed to get out of London.
Then we’ve been out playing the new songs in festival shows over the summer, so it’s been interesting listening to the audience’s reactions as we play them live.
New York is one of those capital cities that is unique, cities that have their own energy running through them. New York is similar to London in many ways, if you can function in London you’ll be able to function in New York inevitably the same way.
Most bands disappear when they’re off recording but you’ve been playing live the whole time.
We know a lot of people over there, but it just felt like New Yorkers would be open to this idea of what we were doing.
That’s what we are really, that’s what everything is honed towards- the live performance. When we did the first record ‘Silence Yourself’ that was very much a document of the live show, when we wrote those songs we had no thoughts of recording, we were just focused on being a live band and the performance side of things. Recording was just trying to capture that. When we came to the second record, I guess people normally write and then go straight into the studio but we couldn’t. That doesn’t make sense to us, we need to put those songs to an audience and have the adrenalin and have them finished that way. That’s what we did in New York for three weeks.
They were so great. We did nine shows over three weeks and there were people who came to every show. Some people came to just a few but they really understood what we were doing. ‘Adore Life’ continues on from the first record, but it also goes somewhere different. By the time you reach the final track it’s built to such an amazing crescendo. It has such a release at the end. I’m glad you say that, this record was very much a continuation of the first record in that we’ve just progressed, we became much better musicians after two years of touring and we can trust each other a lot more. music We know how each other are going to react, but we also surprise each other. We said for this record, ‘any idea that you have, that you want to push a bit more, you have the freedom to do that.’ Something maybe more melodic, or harder, or in terms of mechanics. For ‘Mechanics’ the last track on the album, it pushed an abstract idea that we wanted to follow. That’s what this album’s been, it’s been really enjoyable to record it. The track ‘Adore’ must be the quietest track Savages have ever recorded. I think so. When we started writing we actually had quite a few quiet, slow songs. We put them by the wayside, a lot of stuff gets put aside, but ‘Adore’ is a track we could never have put on the first record. What do you do when you have songs that just aren’t working out? Sometimes I just feel ‘it’s not their time’ or maybe in a year or so they’ll come back. There were quite a few that just didn’t work out and a few that we played live in New York that just wouldn’t go any further. There’s always a process where you have to see a song through to the end, and if anyone of us has a feeling that there’s something worthwhile in a song that’s worth keeping we’ll always try and find that is and work out a way to use it, maybe in another song. Sometimes though it just doesn’t become anything.
When you played the Laneway festival in Perth you closed your set with the amazing song ‘Fuckers’, which isn’t on your first album and it’s hasn’t made it on to ‘Adore Life’. Why’s that song ended up as an orphan? We recorded it live and put it out with our cover of ‘Dream Baby Dream’ as a vinyl release. There was some discussion about recording it in the studio for this record, but it’s such a live song, we decided it would almost be impossible to it better than that live performance. We thought it would be strange to play it in a studio. Jehnny wrote those lyrics. A friend, Meilyr Jones, who is the singer of the band Race Horses, he stayed at her house and after a late night conversation about how what we were doing, in the morning he wrote her a note. It said ‘Don’t let the fuckers get you down!’ and he left it on the fridge. Then she wrote that song. It’s a piece of advice that a friend gave her, that she felt she could give back to the audience. It’s such a live song, its advice that you have to give to people live. Savages are a very stylish band, watching you perform live I walked away thinking how very well dressed you all were, but there’s also very specific imagery in your covers and videos. Is style something you discuss as a band or just it just happen naturally?
I guess there is quite a lot of work put into it. I guess from when we came together we always knew how important everything surrounding the music is. It’s not just the music itself, there is an aesthetic around it. In writing the music there’s a process of making sure everything’s there for a reason. That process we use for writing the music, you can put it to the artwork and the way you dress, the people you’re with. Everything is very distinct and there for a reason. ‘Silence Yourself’ had an instruction inside saying ‘This album needs to be played loud in the foreground’, how should we listen to the new record. I guess this record ‘Adore Life’ is much more of an open record. It’s more of a… (pauses) it can still be loud! ‘Silence Yourself’ was a question, while this record isn’t an answer it’s about changing and it gives you the freedom to change if you need to, if you want to change there are places to go. You need to listen to it openly. This record speaks about love in all its forms, and love as a way to change, love can be a catalyst to change towards other things.

FILM REVIEWS Spotlight (MA)
Directed by Thomas McCarthy Spotlight is a team of four Boston Globe reporters conducting in-depth research. In 2001 they investigated the sexual molestation of a child by a local priest. Their investigations led to the discovery of many more cases of children being sexually abused by priests in the Boston area. In a city where the Catholic Church is at the centre of the community and the old boys’ network holds everything together, the reporters struggled to get to the truth. The story unfolds like one of the best thrillers as shocking evidence is uncovered about more and more paedophile priests, their young victims and the cover-up by those in power. It did happen. Even though you’ve probably read the articles and know the story, it doesn’t make this film any less powerful … and when the list a places where abuse has been uncovered comes up at the end of the film, it is like being stabbed in the heart.
Joy (M)
Directed by David Russell Jennifer Lawrence is Joy, a character inspired by the real story of Joy Mangano who invented a self-wringing mop. Joy’s house seems to be packed with people she is looking after – her two children, her mother, her father who is separated from her mother, her grandmother and her ex-husband. Her grandmother tells her that she can do anything but the distance between having an idea and making it a successful reality is full of obstacles. Television marketing is just taking off and Joy convinces Neil Walker (Bradley Cooper) to promote her mop. The mop is a success but it is not straight forward journey as the naïve Joy learns about the pitfalls of being in business the hard way. Jennifer Lawrence is dynamic as her character fights foes and family to build a business empire and Bradley Cooper is charismatic as his character switches from adversary to ally and back again.
Revenant (MA)
Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu In 1823, the American West was a daunting place. Men battled extreme elements of an uncharted wilderness for a lucrative fur trade. Trappers were expected to hunt their own food, build their own shelter and fight the tribes who had populated the area for more than 1000 years before Europeans arrived. One story which has survived is of Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) who was savagely mauled by a grizzly bear while trapping and left to die. Glass went beyond the limits of body, mind and soul to become known as the revenant- one returns from the dead. It is physically intense as it is anemotionally raw journey with DiCaprio doing many of his own stunts including being buried in snow, going naked in minus five-degree weather and jumping into a frigid river. Shot in chronological order with the characters growing increasingly weather-beaten, it is also an amazing visual spectacle.
The Belier Family (M) Directed by Eric Lartigau
The Belier family make cheese at their dairy farm in rural France and sell it at the local market. They rely on 16 year old daughter Paula (Louane Emera) whois the only one in her family who is not deaf and mute. At first, we are entertained by the many funny and embarrassing situations that arise as she tries to live in a non-hearing world and take on the communication role for her parents and younger brother. But when music teacher Monsieur Thomasson (Eric Elmosnino) discovers that she has an angelic singing voice, Paula discovers possibilities that her parents can’t even imagine. The film is based on a true story and Louane Emera, who was a finalist in France’s The Voice, carries this coming of age story with an earthy intelligence. She also has the voice of an angel which guarantees there won’t be a dry eye when the final scene unfolds.
Cartoon Network censor LGBT love Cartoon Network UK have edited an episode of the animated series ‘Steven Universe’ to remove romantic moments between two female characters.
Benjamin Law’s best-selling autobiography comes to life this month on SBS with the debut of the sit-com ‘The Family Law’. Charting the summer journey of the camp son of Chinese immigrants, the comical show is hysterically funny and shows that whatever cultural background you come from, the challenges in a family remain the same.
Trystan Go who plays the lead role is fabulously entertaining and Fiona Choi who plays his mother gets lots of laughs but also pulls all the heartstrings. Don’t miss this show, Thursday nights on SBS from January 14th Catch Steven Universe in Australia on Foxtel’s Cartoon Network.
The US series has been lauded for its powerful female characters and queer representation, prominently featuring same-sex relationships and genderqueer characters – a rarity in children’s programming. The show’s creator and former producer Rebecca Sugar confirmed
earlier in 2015 that female characters Ruby and Sapphire were deeply in love. The unedited episode of ‘We Need To Talk’ shows (no spoilers here!) two female characters engaged in an intimate dance during a musical moment of the program. The episode features a number of romantic moments between male/female characters that remain uncensored.
“Be assured that as a channel and network we celebrate diversity – evident across many of our shows and characters.” “We do feel that the slightly edited version is more comfortable for local kids and their parents.” Same-sex marriage has been legal in the United Kingdom since 2014. Catch Steven Universe in Australia on Foxtel’s Cartoon Network. Leigh Hill
Cartoon Network responded to criticism, addressing their decision. “The US broadcast system requires that shows are marked with a rating – in this case PG (parental guidance necessary). In the UK we have to ensure everything on air is suitable for kids of any age at any time.”

Toby Halligan describes himself as a “bad gay”.The up-and-coming comic and writer for Channel Ten’s ‘The Project’ is the socks-and-sandals kind of dude, and he loves it, but sometimes it invites some flak from the wider gay fraternity. We chat to Toby about his show as he prepares to bare his dorky soul. What is it that makes you call yourself a “bad gay”? It comes out of a core truth that I’ve always physically and fundamentally been bad at identifiable stereotypes of being a ‘good gay’. When I was younger, before I came out, I used to wear a bright yellow Polartech. I didn’t just wear it on hikes or stuff like that – I’d wear it to parties. Any event. It stood out so much that my friends had a costume party and someone came dressed as me. He wore a yellow Polartech to the party and everyone knew who they were. Hey, it’s a look. (laughs) Yeah, I was wearing bright red Crocs recreationally and really enjoying it. I’ve just never been a particularly effective gay man, so a big part of the show is about that. You’ll never navigate the gay world if you don’t have the core skill-set. A lot of the show was written when Abbott was Prime Minister and taps into the sense that gay people are a group in society that are generally made to feel on the outside. You’re not a normal person, or not a good normal person, at least. It matters more
when you’re made to feel you don’t matter that much by sections of mainstream culture – but I make that funny. Some people would argue they feel marginalised from within the LGBT community as well. Yeah, we used to call it a “gay community”, but it’s not really. It’s not the same as a Chinese community or a Jewish community – those groups have a shared language, a shared history, shared religion. Gay people aren’t like that at all. At parties, I’ve had friends say things like “Toby, this is Christian… You’re both gay!” as if that will literally give us enough to talk about. So your show explores preconceptions and stereotypes of gay men? The kind of underlying theme of the show is that there’s a [preconceived] right and wrong way to be gay and I think that’s bullshit. It’s marketing, basically. It’s nightclubs trying to sell you shit – or hookup apps trying to get you to pay.
So it’s a struggle between a personal compulsion to defy stereotypes and those who’d tear you down for not conforming? Yeah. It’s that “I’m cooler than you” mentality. I think I’m old enough now to be like, “You’re right. I’m not.” I could never have been. It’s like a zebra telling a watermelon, “I can outrun you.” Well, yeah, but I’m a watermelon. I can’t compete. There’s no point me even trying to bother competing in that environment. I’m sweet though at least, and kind of healthy? London-born Nigerian Le Gateau Chocolat is bringing two new shows to Perth’s Fringe World, a special show for kids called ‘Duckie’ and his drag cabaret extravaganza, ‘Icons’. ‘Icons’ is not your drag mama’s diva showcase, as Gateau pays homage to an eclectic range of artists from Wagner to Elvis, from Whitney to Kate Bush. I spoke to Le Gateau about his personal icons, performance and creativity ahead of his Perth appearances. I know you’ve been to Fringe World before, but this is an all new show? Yes, this will be my Perth debut – and you’re lucky, the kids show will be an international debut. Tell us about ‘Icons’ – what does this show mean to you? Well, this applies to my kids show as well. I think in a time like now, where we have people like Donald Trump rising through the ranks in America to one of the highest offices in the land, the mass exodus of Syrians, the worst refugee crisis in our lifetime… the theme that always runs through my work is underlining the things that make us the same. So I club my way through some iconic music, moments. I, on the face of it, look unique to me – but thematically we’re the same. I talk about an international icon, for instance Elvis and the song ‘Always On My Mind’. Now he’s really an unlikely icon for me but the reason I call that song iconic to me is because I was training for the London Marathon and I gave someone my music player and I asked them to put as much music as they could on it just so that I had something different to what I would usually listen to. During the marathon, ‘Always On My Mind’ came on for the first time. So not only is that song iconic in its own right, but it’s now linked to an iconic moment in my life.” The heart of performing those iconic numbers is to look into why that music is not just iconic, and not just iconic to me – but further still, at the heart of that, it’s linked
to things you would understand as well: friendship, love, family, success, accomplishment, dreams. Do you always put so much of yourself into your performances? I try to. Obviously there are some shows where I’m just being an absolute idiot. I think people have expectations of what drag is, or what drag is supposed to be, and I’m not that. So I suppose it comes from working through what it is I want to say in my work, it’s not so much selfintelligent, it’s more from having lived on the fringe. Always having been different or coming to England and being a minority, not just in terms of my sexuality but also my colour. Even in the gay community and doing drag, it can be difficult – so what can you do? I think my work is about taking different people or ideas and helping people understand what it is to be different or a minority. Who are some of your personal icons and inspirations? My friend who passed away. I didn’t realise how much of an inspiration to me he was until he wasn’t there anymore. Now I look at my style of performance and his work was kind of intimate. He used to do one-onone shows, he had a show called Salon Adrienne where he had a seat in a salon during this festival and he would come in and wash your hair and through that do his show. So I thought, “How can I apply his intimacy work on a grander scale. I play for at least a hundred people, or over that, so it’s interesting to see how his work linked to the stuff I do. ‘Icons’ will be in the De Parel Spiegeltent from Friday 22nd – Sunday 31st January & the kids show ‘Duckie’ opens in the West Australian Spiegeltent on Saturday January 23rd. and Cabaret performer Anya Anastasia has been hailed as a major talent. She’s performed in cities across the globe and now’s she heading to Fringe World. Her cake-a-licious satirical show ‘Tore e Mort: Songs of Cake and Death’ will take up residence at Connections. Your show’s title references cakes, which immediately made us hungry – what’s your favourite cake, and what makes it great?
works much better. That ghostly undead confusion as she tries to interpret her situation adds a lot to her wonderfully unstable character.
I love most all cake, and recently have enjoyed the excuse that eating cake is doing research. (I’ll write my next show about whiskey?)
Why are ukuleles wonderful?
I love chocolate torte, I love tiramisu, I love any cake made by a Nonna. Supermarket cake is the stuff of nightmares - if I ever smell a caramel flavoured sponge cake I will vomit. I had a bad experience recently with one being smashed (rather more violently than expected) in my face … fake caramel smell still plagues my nightmares. You play several characters in your show, who will we meet? You’ll meet a wildly hedonistic party animal - Marie Antoinette, a very cheesy and sleazy she-devil, even a very grim Grimm Reaper makes an appearance. There are a couple more, (won’t ruin all the surprises) but what you may find hard to believe is that I don’t leave the stage... These transformations unfold as if by magic before your very boggling eyes. Which character has been the most difficult to bring to life? I found Marie Antoinette couldn’t be brought to life. In the end I decided to leave her dead and play her as a ghost. It
SO versatile. Oh the things you can do with a ukulele. I have one song where it sounds almost like a harp, plucking little delicate notes that hang in the air, and another where I can get a very full sound with percussive effects, for a very driving and punchy song. And they are so portable. I bring one just about everywhere. What will people experience if they come to your show? Non-stop laugh out loud punchlines, some tricks I guarantee they have never seen before, some very pleasing slightly unconventional vocal talents, an electric live band and gasp at some breathtaking visual moments. Torte e Mort: Songs of Cake and Death is playing at Connections Nightclub 8pm on January 27,29-31.

Felt inspired to You thought exercise “What did I just watch?”
You’ll never erase it from your memory
Someone entered from the ceiling
Los del Rio’s ‘The Macarena’ vs Las Ketchap’s ‘The Ketchup Song’ I’d go for the Christmas version of The Macarena, I feel like it’s a traditional part of Spanish culture to sing vaguely in-key carols over the Macarena. Tone Loc - Funky Cold Media vs Vanilla Ice – Ice Ice Baby ‘Ice Ice Baby’ is the more annoying song, Tone Loc can rap as where Vanilla Ice doesn’t have that skill.
Chilled in the Pleasure Gardens
Leave covered in a mystery substance
Coveted a fabulous costume
Cringed your ass off
Fiest – 1,2,3,4 vs Steps – 5,6,7,8 Clearly 5,6,7,8 because Fiest is a good singer, and plus I could go into a multiple song journeys through techno bluegrass, we could play The Grid and Rednex’s ‘Cotton Eye Joe’.
It was too weird for you
Bay City Rollers – Shang a Lang vs Skrillex – Bangarang vs ABBA – Bang a Boomerang I really love the Bay City Rollers, seeing one of them play with a tribute band at the Leisure Inn in Rockingham is one of the best (and worst) concerts I’ve ever been to. ‘Bangarang’ would be the winner because it allows everyone to dance around like their at their little brother’s High School end of year party.
See something shocking
Alt and the Lost Civisation – Tequilla vs UB40 – Red, Red Wine Well it depends, if I want middle aged secretaries to flirt with me I’d go with ‘Red, Red Wine’, but if wanted the party to go off, it would be ‘Tequila’.
