BUTT 5

AT THE END OF THE DAY When Victor Hugo published his great novel ‘Les Miserables’ in 1862 he wrote in the preface his reasons for creating the story.

it’s like a giant oil painting has come to life on stage. If you’ve never seen ‘Les Miserables’ go – you won’t be disappointed.

So long as there shall exist, by reason of law and custom, a social condemnation, which, in the face of civilization, artificially creates hells on earth, and complicates a destiny that is divine with human fatality; so long as the three problems of the age—the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of women by starvation, and the dwarfing of childhood by physical and spiritual night— are not solved; so long as, in certain regions, social asphyxia shall be possible; in other words, and from a yet more extended point of view, so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this cannot be useless.

Having watched the show in Melbourne last month in preparation for our cover story this month I found it stuck with me, not only have I been constantly humming ‘One Day More’, “I Dreamed a Dream’ and ‘At the End of the Day’, I’ve also found myself thinking about what we’re doing in 2014 to make the world a better a place. What laws of our time are allowing a hell on earth for society’s most vulnerable? Time to set some new goals for the year ahead.

Now more than a century and a half later, the challenges at Hugo hoped to highlight still exist in our modern world, albeit in different forms. Even in our most prosperous cities poverty, starvation and children’s’ innocent young lives being cut short are still daily realities. The tale of Jean Valjean, his nemesis Inspector Javert, Fantine, the young Cosette, the Thenardiers, the heart throb Marius and lovelorn Eponine has as much to communicate today as it did when it was first published. At the end of this month the amazing new production of the musical ‘Les Miserables’ will arrive in Perth. If you’ve seen this show before, go again – the new staging is staggeringly effective,

May you all have a Happy New Year and a prosperous 2015.

Actor extraordinaire Alan Cumming (probably best known for his role as Eli Gold in ‘The Good Wife’ and The Nigthtcrawler in ‘X-Men X2’) grew up in a beautiful part of Scotland, but all he wanted to do was get away … away from his father’s fits of rage. “Every second was filled with the possibility that in an instant my father’s mind would plunge into irrationality, rage and ultimately violence.” Silence and denial surrounded him, but eventually “boxes full of denial and years of unresolved pain and hurt” threatened to explode. This is one of the most fascinating and moving autobiographies that I have read. At the same time as a crew from the television program ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ began conducting historical digs into his family’s dystopian past, Alan received information that he might not be related to his monstrous father. Alan says, “Everything that I had known as sure and true

As the television program revealed mysteries from his maternal grandfather’s past, Alan found parallels with his life. The one hour program was actually filmed over a number of months, which was just as well as the surprises continually sideswiped him with the similarities to his story. He writes about his struggle to realign himself and to clear a path through the wreckage his father and grandfather had left behind. His work continually draws his back to the present, and his humanity and compassion allow him to heal. Telling the world a much darker and deeper story than that of a “fabulous celebrity life” has powerful messages about “the frailty of life, the importance of family and the power of love.” Alan also reminds us that the scariest thing about abuse of any shape or form is not the abuse itself, but that if it continues long enough, it can begin to feel commonplace and eventually acceptable – but it is never commonplace and never acceptable. The Rainbow Warriors are an informal social swim group that swims every Sunday morning in the winter at a local Perth pool and during the summer moves to ocean swimming at North Cottesloe beach.

Enjoy swimming, food and good company? The Perth Rainbow Warriors are just for you!

The group was formed after several members successfully completed the Rottnest Channel Swim in 2005. The Rainbow Warriors continue to participate in other organised ocean swims during the summer including the Busselton Jetty Swim. Since inception the group has grown in size and comprises a wide range of ages and backgrounds. Brunch is enjoyed after every Sunday swim at a nearby eatery and this facilitates lively discussion across a diverse range of topics.

Sunday morning can become a highlight of your week! The group also comes together for other social events and excursions during the year. Graeme Watson from OUTinPerth joined the group for their first ocean swim at North Cottesloe on Pride weekend. He found it refreshing and said, “I can vouch that they’re one of the most fun social groups in town.” Everyone is welcome, whether you’re up for swimming a few laps or going for a record. Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of ‘Les Miserables’ is heading to Perth. The show which is one of the most successful musicals ever has been given a makeover. The new production utilises projections and innovative lighting to bring 19th century Paris to life.

The show looks like a giant oil painting has come to life. The fast moving musical is filled with emotion as it follows the lives of Jean Valjean, his ward Cosette, his nemesis Inspector Javert and the people living in the slums of Paris . Simon Gleeson takes on the lead role of Jean Valjean, while Hayden Tee appears as Inspector Javert. Patrice Tipoki plays Fantine, while another WAAPA graduate, Emily Langridge plays her daughter Cosette. Kerrie Anne Greenland plays the lovelorn Eponine, while the handsome Chris Durling excels as revolutionary Enjolras. Euan Doige takes on the role of love interest Marius, while Trevor Ashley and Lara Mulachy get all the laughs as the Thenardiers. Euan Doige who plays the heart-throb Marius remembers the first time he was introduced to the world of ‘Les Miserables’.

“My first ‘Les Miserables’ experience must have been when I was about thirteen. My singing teacher gave me some sheet music and she said, ‘Let’s work on this song ‘Stars’’. I had no idea about the show, but I loved the music. I performed it at a local singing competition.” Doige said. “I love being a part of this show because I think it’s so important to share this story with people. Simon Glesson mentioned a while ago, ‘This is the last show that is telling stories, stories that really happened.’ Musical theatre is changing, people are still creating things that are amazing, but it nice to share a story. It’s so true and full of honesty.” When asked if he has a favourite moment in the show Doige nominates ‘At the End of the Day’.

culture “I just enjoy that scene, all these factory workers, and all the boys are together, it’s just got great energy. It’s the first big chunk we do as an ensemble.” One face that will definitely be familiar to queer audiences will be Trevor Ashley’s. The performer has spent the last few years successfully working in big musical productions like ‘Hairspray’ and ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’, alongside his own popular cabaret shows. He brought his ‘Lisa on an E’ show to Perth’s ‘Fringeworld’ in 2013. Ashley takes on the role of the dubious Innkeeper Monsieur Thenardier, a character who provides much of the comedy relief in the show. Ashley works closely with Lara Mulcahy, the WAAPA graduate who has previously starred in ‘Mama Mia’ and appears in many of Baz Luhrmann’s films. “It’s not known as a comedy,” Ashley said, ‘Cameron [Mackintosh] was adamant that as much as possible he wanted as many laughs that we could get.” There’s no denying the chemistry between Ashley and Mulcahy, who plays his wife Madame Thenardier.

“Thenardier is a very interesting character,” Ashley said, “He’s possibly the most evil character in the show really. The show has a lot of religious overtones really, Valjean finds God and he’s able to change himself, but Thenardier and his wife are really seen as the Godless of the show.” “He’s a character who relishes the fact that he’s totally wrong, he’ll happily sell his daughter, or kill someone, and it doesn’t really bother him. Things don’t come into his moral compass.” Ashley said he was enjoying the challenge of being in a very different kind of musical. “Let’s be honest, some days I do wish for a sequin or two, or an up-tempo number would be nice.” Ashley jokes, breaking into a giant laugh. “It’s very different to Priscilla, that was all feathers and over the top pop songs. It’s funny for me to be in such a legit show – I think everyone was surprised when it was announced that it would be me playing the role!” ‘Les Miserables’ opens for previews at the Crown Theatre on December 31st. Tickets are available from ticketek.com.au

“We spent a lot of time on stage trying to make each other laugh,” Ashley confesses. “She’ll say something ridiculous to me and try to get me to laugh…it’s a fun relationship we have.”

Nana Mouskouri breaks into a laugh when I ask her if she remembers the first time she went into a recording studio.

since realised that she still wanted to perform, so next year she’s coming to Australia for a national tour. “Singing is my life!” Mouskouri declares “I made my life doing this, there is a lot of meaning for me in being a singer. Last year I started looking for an excuse, a reason so I could say ‘I’m back’.”

“I remember the first times!” proclaims the singer who recently celebrated her eightieth birthday. “The first time in Paris, I was there for six hours and recorded one song, but I had been in a studio before that, in Greece, I went in with Manos Hadjidakis the Greek author who wrote so many of the most beautiful songs that I’ve sung in my life. It was 1958.”

The singer is proud of her on-going work with UNICEF, she as a child of the Second World War she had the first-hand said experience of the problems of war. “It’s taken me from South America, to Central America, and Mexico – I’ve been to Vietnam and Africa, the Ivory Coast and Kenya and so many places”. “The things I have seen, sometimes they are unbearable. There is so much suffering of children.” Mouskouri said. “The most important thing is that children need health and education”. Mouskouri shared that she doesn’t regret the five years she spent as a member of the European Parliament but she realized that it wasn’t the perfect match for her. “I left because I wanted to, I realised it wasn’t a world for me to continue in, it’s a different world, it’s a world where they are trying to find the right solutions, but it’s very difficult.”

“I wasn’t nervous, I was so anxious to go, and was so happy, I was keen to go. I wasn’t afraid, I had nothing to lose, I just wanted to learn.” Mouskouri recalled.

Mouskouri said she was blessed to have a fan base that spanned generations. “I’ve been very lucky in my life, when I was a young mother I had lots of ladies who were younger than me who liked my records, and they have influenced their children…it’s the most wonderful gift to have parents who have shared their love of music with their children.”

Over the last 50 years the Greek superstar has sold over 300 million records. Mouskouri was a truly international artist, she recorded in many different languages and toured the world for decades playing in virtually every nation on the planet. Mouskouri nominates working with Quincy Jones as one of her career highlights.

Nana Mouskouri, one of the most successful recording artists in the world is heading to Perth.

“I’ve been so lucky to have people like my music for so many years, to have been able to travel around the world and meet so many wonderful people,” Mouskouri humbly said.

“I went into the studio with Quincy Jones in 1962, that was in New York.” said Mouskouri, “We were there for three weeks and every night Quincy took me to listen to some of the important singers of the time, we’d head off to Harlem and see Sarah Vaughn, Dianah Washington and Nancy Wilson or Nat King Cole. Then we’d head into the studio, I learned so much at that time.”

Nana Muskouri is playing at the Perth Concert Hall on Sunday April 19, tickets are available at Ticketek. Head to the OUTinPerth giveaways page for your chance to score a ticket to the show.

Having retired from performing in 2008 Mouskouri went on to work as a UNICEF Ambassador and had a political career representing Greece in the European Parliament. The singer has

Promoting Solidarity

At the 2014 World AIDS Day commemoration, WA AIDS Council Chairperson Jonathon Hallet addressed the audience with a speech commenting on the need for solidarity in the ongoing fight against HIV and AIDS. “Solidarity is a word we don’t seem to hear so often recently when we confront the global challenge of AIDS. And yet solidarity has been a foundation principle from the time that the crisis began more than 30 years ago.” Hallet said. He also drew attention to the need to show solidarity not only within our community, but across the world. “Our own self-interest dictates that we not only take an interest in HIV and AIDS in our region, but that we actively participate in helping build capacity with local organisations working hard to lessen the devastation that HIV will potentially, and in some places already is producing. Capacity must be addressed in terms of legal and political frameworks, health promotion, health infrastructure, personal empowerment, community development and education”. Sophie Joske

Same Sex Marriage

Bill Hits Senate

In late November, Liberal Democrat Senator David Leyonhjelm introduced a bill to the senate that would allow marriage for gay lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex Australians. The bill, if successful, would change the wording of the Marriage Act to ”a union between two people” rather than between “a man and a woman”. Leyonhjelm told RTRTM’s ‘Morning Magazine’ program that Prime Minister Tony Abbott urged him not to introduce the bill. “He gave me the definite impression that he’d rather I didn’t raise it, that they have enough on their agenda already and this would just cause debate and division in the party room and he wished it would just go away, and that I’d leave it alone.” Leyonhjelm said.

In the lead up to the 2013 election, Abbott softened his position on same sex marriage, stating that although he was personally against marriage equality, the matter would be brought to “the postelection party room”. Recently, Abbott seems to have negated that statement by saying in a press conference on December 1st that a conscience vote on the issue was unlikely. “Normally, opposition private members motions in the Senate are dealt with without a vote [in the party room]” Abbott said. Now, if this one is different, well, obviously the party room will consider it. But if is dealt with in the normal way, it won’t actually come before the party room.” Image credit: YAY Micro Sophie Joske

Perth Marches

for Pride

Perth Pride Parade returned to its traditional night time position this year and the streets of Northbridge were crowded with spectators. Fifty-two groups marched in the parade ranging from community groups to businesses and individuals. The shoe from ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ made an appearance, alongside

stilt walkers, super heroes, samba dancers and drag stars. Political causes weren’t left out either with a theatrical group highlighting LGBTIQ people held in detention on Manus Island. Marriage Equality and Mental Health issues were also highlighted. Graeme Watson

Equal Marriage Supporters

Take to The Streets

On November 22nd activists, members of the LGBTI community and allies marched to oppose Australia’s ban on same sex marriage. Curtin Student Guild Humanities Faculty representative Clare Francis chaired the rally, introducing fellow speakers Farida Iqbal, James Rendell, UWA Student Guild Queer Officer Natalia Verne and Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren , who spoke on the need for persistence in the fight for marriage equality.

“I am over 50, I am a lesbian, I am a member of the Greens in this parliament, in this state and it is not easy and I really need your support for every time the Greens stand up for what matters. What matters today is equal love, and that’s not just for the same sex marriage bill which I have the agenda, but it’s for queer rights across the spectrum. It is for lesbian, gay, intersex, bisexual, asexual, trans and queer, because we are different and we get left out.” Mac Laren said. Sophie Joske

Perth’s resident drag DJ Feminem The Future is going to be representing WA at Queens of the Galaxy, the nation-wide drag competition that is performed annually in Darwin. The competition sees one queen from each of Australia’s states compete to see who will be crowned Queen of the Galaxy for that year. Last year Western Australia had no representative, so it’s up to Feminem to put us back on the map. She chatted to OUTinPerth about what she wants to show the world about Western Australia’s drag scene:

“WA is the best. I grew up in Sydney and started my drag career in Sydney and Perth rolls with the best of them absolutely, so it’s definitely a chance for me to show the rest of the country what we do over here.” Feminem said she feels Perth’s drag scene, while it may not be as large as Sydney’s, has contenders just as strong.

professionally have such very distinct looks, very distinct personalities and we are all so easily recognizable and I think because we are in such a small community we all want to make sure we stand out from the crowd.” Having never been to Darwin before, Feminem said she’s excited to bring her skills into uncharted territory. “My winning strategy is just to really go out there and do what I do best and that is entertain, to really turn it out 100%. I love competing. When I look back over some

of the earlier years and when I first started out doing competitions, some of the best times I’ve ever had in drag is doing competitions and performing against others. And it really brings out the best in people I think. So I’m excited. But as far as winning goes, it’s anyone’s, you know. You never can tell.” Sophie Joske Image by Claire Alexander

“I think a smaller scene really forces people to step their game up. I feel on some of the bigger scenes, it’s not laziness but I feel like queens can kind of blend in with each other, and I feel like in Perth, all of us who are working

For her twelfth record soul sister Mary J Blige headed to London to embrace a new sound and spent a month working with some of the UK’s hottest talent. Teaming up with Disclosure, Emile Sande, Naughty Boy and Sam Smith has allowed Blige to release what may regarded as the best album of her career. The album has a huge range from the soulful ‘Therapy’, which opens the album, to tender ballads and killer dance tracks including ‘Right Now’ and ‘Follow’. This is a superior album. - Graeme Watson

Royksopp The Inevitable End

This massive compilation sees a swag-load of artists take on some classic tracks from the 80’s with mostly positive results. Kylie Minogue excels with Kim Carnes ‘Bette Davis Eyes’, Sam Smith delivers a mellow take on Whitney Houston’s ‘How Will I Know’, Will Young nails Womack and Womack’s ‘Teardrops’ and Birdy transforms Madonna’s ‘Lucky Star’ into a haunting ballad. Sophie Ellis Bextor shows she can do New Order better than George Michael and Caro Emerald respectfully recreates ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’. If you love the 80’s this will bring you joy. - Graeme Watson

Thirteen years after their breakthrough hit with the ever catchy tune ‘Epple’ – Norwegian electronic duo Royksopp bow out with their final offering, a darker and more somber collection of tunes. Featuring a host of guest vocalists including Robyn, Man Without a Country, Jamie Irrepressible and Susanne Sudfor, this is an interesting album. ‘I had this thing’ is the albums most upbeat moment, while other tunes are filled with interesting lyrics, worth repeated listens. The closing track ‘Thankyou’, which features what sounds like harmonising robots, is a lovely final note from the band. - Graeme Watson

NIGHTCRAWLER (MA)

THE DROP (MA)

Although he can recite the modern-day scriptures from corporate America, Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds he has few opportunities to secure work. Then one night, he stumbles upon two men filming for the next morning’s television news and he becomes a nightcrawler. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles between midnight and 6am, the film captures those who prowl the streets and record car crashes, fires and even murders to sell to local news stations. Lou works exclusively for veteran news producer Nina (Rene Russo) and it is interesting to see how their relationship changes as Lou becomes more consummate at his job. Both Lou and Nina are survivors in the battle between television stations for the scariest crime stories, but sometimes lines are crossed. This highly watchable nocturnal thriller gets the pulse racing and absolutely oozes with dark humour. Everything revolves around Gyllenhaal whose disturbing behaviour pushes the limits.

Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) is a bartender at Cousin Marv’s in working-class Brooklyn. Sometimes he has to look the other way when the bar is used as a drop point for dirty money that needs to be stored away from those in law enforcement. He keeps to himself and attends mass every day at the local church, but his life becomes more complicated when he rescues a puppy from a bin. When his neighbour Nadia (Noomi Rapace) helps him nurse the puppy back to health, unexpected sparks ignite. Then the original owner Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts), who just happens to be Nadia’s ex-boyfriend, turns up and tries to take possession of both the dog and Nadia. When the bar is robbed, Bob finds himself in the middle of an organised crime feud and he is forced to face the shocking truth about people he thinks he knows – including himself.

MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN (MA) Directed by Jason Reitman

As the camera follows a number of students at a Texas high school, text boxes hover above them to show what electronic communications they are engaged in. The portability of the internet has certainly changed the way we interact. Reitman shows how a group of teenagers have replaced intimacy with instantaneous banalities and parents struggle with how to protect them as they try to sort out their own problems. Concentrating on the small dramas that occupy our insignificant lives, he highlights video game addiction, anorexia, fame hunting, infidelity and porn addiction. The phones, tablets and the computers are just the vehicles for characters and relationships to be tested and some of the results are hilarious. Everyone is using technology to search for love and recognition, but it becomes obvious that they are looking in the wrong places. Technology is allowing us to make the same old mistakes in newer ways!

MAPS TO THE STARS Directed by David Cronenberg

(MA)

This in-your-face social satire delves into the lives of a group of people trapped in the insular celebrity world that is Hollywood. While Stanford Weiss (John Cusack) is therapist to the stars. His wife Christina struggles to manage their child-star son Benjie (Evan Bird) who has just graduated rehab at the age of 13. Aging actress Havana (Julianne Moore) is fighting the younger actresses for roles and bored limo driver Jerome (Robert Pattinson) is writing a script. The link between these characters is the mysterious Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) who arrives in town as a shy, timid burns survivor looking for work. Self-interest takes centre stage for these privileged people and when violent tantrums erupt, they are stripped of their tinsel town wrapping. It’s not pretty ‘Maps to the Stars’ screens as part of the Perth Festival 8-14 December at UWA’s Somerville and 16-21 December at ECU’s Joondalup..

I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone by – yet, coincidentally, dragged on as well. Another Christmas almost here – another festive time on my own. My partner of eight years virtually walked out a week before Christmas 2013. She barely said a wordgave no explanation. For sure, things had not been going all that well for some time, but still – I really don’t know why she left. And here I am facing another Christmas on my own. I am fearful. I am lonely. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life on my own – but how, where, do I find another partner? How do I allow myself to open up to the risk of another loss? Will I ever be able to love so fully again?

Not-so-happy Chris The consequential emotional upheavals – as well as physical costs – of a relationship breakup are the same as in all incidents of loss and, as a result, require us to enter into the grief process in order for healing to be experienced and such healing is only possible after resolution. We need to accept that when a relationship has broken down, for whatever reason, we experience a death; death of hope. And all deaths need to be grieved. And grief is a process. And the process is not about laying blame. That is something we have to let go of: blame and the clamorous desire for explanation. In all instances of loss, there is first shock and denial. Shock helps us to get through the first days/weeks/months of physical and mental pain. Shock protects us from ourselves. But, eventually, we need to move on, to abandon denial. Depression and despair may follow – it may have even been embedded in the first stage. Again, a natural process. We need to give ourselves permission to be saddened by the loss. Yet again, these stages may be aggravated by anger. Do we give ourselves permission to be angry? Do we accept that anger is not a dirty word; that anger is not something to be avoided but rather entered into; that anger is our in-built smoke alarm alerting us to the fact that something needs to be attended to, the primary emotions below the anger: confusion, fear, doubt, anxiety, sadness?

PrideFEST 2014 has come to a close. It is here that we are able to release any need for blame; it is here that we are free to ask the question: What part did I play in the breakup of the relationship? What unrealistic expectations did I take into the union? What changes may I need to undergo, to be open to? It is only when these questions are given a voice and dealt with that we find peace: acceptance that none of us are perfect, that we cannot look to another for perfection; that no one person will ever meet all our needs; that relationships are built on a willingness to take risks, to be open, to be vulnerable. Maybe you can use this festive time as a time of healing. Instead of allowing your fears to weigh you down, keep you in hades, use them as leaven to rise up, to embolden you to enter into the process of grief and its ultimate resolution and new beginnings. Look to the New Year as one full of promise. Enter the process and that is something I can promise you: acceptance, resolution … and ultimate freedom. The freedom to be truly the person you are – one who is ready for a new, lifeenriching relationship that values the personhood of each individual with all their frailties and strengths. Sincerely – Happy New Year.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 Pride PARADE prizes: Connections Nightclub, Dykes on Bikes, GRAI, WA Samba, Bassanovas and Charles Denham

When we allow ourselves to move freely through these first three stages of the grief process, we are more easily able to move onto the last two stages: acceptance and resolution.

What a fun-filled 10 days it was, ending in the largest Pride PARADE for a decade. Pride WA would like to thank everyone in the community who attended the many PrideFEST 2014 events and the 2014 Pride PARADE.

community Ahead of the July 2014 International AIDS Conference in Melbourne hopes were high that HIV scientists from around the world would unveil the promise of a much anticipated HIV cure. Headlines of imminent breakthroughs that could lead to a cure for HIV have tantalised the community for years. Sensationalist headlines included “Danish breakthrough for HIV expected within months”(April 2013). Instead days before the main conference at the Towards An HIV Cure Symposium organised by the International AIDS Society sobering commentary was shared about the rebound of HIV in both of the two patients from Boston (who received a stem cell transplant) and the Mississippi baby (who after acquiring HIV in the womb received HIV meds within 30 hours of delivery).

What Do We Want?-HIV Cure!- When Do We Want it?

Science is about advancing knowledge which is gained both from what does and doesn’t work. Optimistically we now have proof that we could extend the time it would take for HIV to return/rebound from the usual one to 4 weeks to 4, 7, and 27 months respectively. Progress indeed, but not the immediate cure that so many people hope for. Getting comfortable with the idea of ‘HIV remission’ may be an intermediate step that we may need to begrudgingly accept as the next step in HIV cure research. Fortunately HIV scientists are continuing to meet and where possible collaborate with each other. The latest international meeting occurred In October 2014 Washington D.C. at a conference hosted by the USA National Institute of Health titled Strategies For An HIV Cure 2014. Topics included; Gene Editing and Cell Based Strategies,

Immune Based Strategies, Social Ethical & Community Aspects of HIV Cure Research and Strategies to Reverse Latency. Science can be dense and complicated, while its flip side reveals inspiration, talent and our best efforts for human advancement. On the 28th of November this year Professor Sharon Lewin, Director from the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity hosted a community roundtable on Building Partnerships For An HIV Cure. Recognition of community and its contribution to cure research is fully acknowledged by Professor Lewin with an early partnership approach adopted with the National Association of People With HIV Australia along with other essential community partners. There are some in the community who do not believe that it is worthwhile dedicating resources to a HIV cure research agenda, believing instead that funding is already stretched and may displace resources from treatment and prevention. The logic is very understandable, and we are all challenged with making choices and trading between opportunities. However the history of HIV has shown that short term either/or positions is detrimental to our long term interests, where both/and thinking has delivered to us the stunningly effective idea of ‘Treatment As Prevention’, where people with HIV successfully on HIV medication are non-infectious (although science is waiting for the statistical confidence intervals to improve) the data trend is now well established (HPTN052, PARTNER Study) we have zero/no linked infections from a person with undetectable viral load. Many people with HIV and the people who love them are frustrated and angry

Getting ready for the Holidays Another year of Perth Pride has come and gone, and what another fantastic year it was! But now that the parties and celebration have come to an end, it might be the time to think about your post party maintenance; I’m talking about maintenance in the form of HIV and STI screening.

The past few months, the M Clinic has seen the rates of HIV and STI’s such as Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia and Syphilis stay steady, but definitely present in the community. Even if you practice safer sex (by wearing condoms), you could still be at risk of picking up syphilis or another sexually transmitted infection through other sexual activities like oral sex.

Driving Lessons

The good news is that the hangover from the party doesn’t need to persist because STIs are curable or treatable, so it really is worthwhile getting a test. And remember, not all STI’s show symptoms, so testing is the only way to know for sure. Now that the big holiday break is quickly approaching, this also means that many services will also go on break. The M Clinic’s last day of testing will be Friday, December 12th, 2014 and our first day testing in the New Year will be Tuesday, January 6th, 2015. With appointments filling in quick, we are encouraging guys to plan ahead and call us to book in. As the M Clinic will likely book up over the next month, it is important to note there are many other options of where you

HIV cure research is already beginning to inform us that early treatment facilitates HIV remission and reduces significantly the total amount of HIV that hides and gets into our cells (viral reservoir) and for some like in the VISCONTI Cohort a ‘functional cure’ ( a very low viral load without medication). The word ‘cure’ can illicit emotional responses, some of us are comfortable with a ‘social cure’ (free from HIV discrimination) others are happy with a ‘cure in transmission’ (we have this now when people are successfully on HIV medication with undetectable viral load), but mostly we want HIV remission and aspire to a ‘full cure’ (also known as ‘sterilising cure’ where HIV is eliminated from the body permanently). To encourage a healthy pipeline of HIV cure research the community will need to activate and build the political urgency and momentum to “END HIV”. If you would like to assist or remain informed of future community events around HIV Cure Research please contact me PositiveAdvocate@hotmail.com When do want a cure? “NOW!” Cipriano Martinez www.positiveadvocate.com

can get tested. For a list of options, check out www.waaids. com and click on the sexual health icon. You can also be tested by your GP. If you want to get a full screen (testing for all STI’s in all sites) it is very important to be very clear about your sexual practices with the testing facilitators so they can test you accordingly. For more information on testing, go to www.mclinic. org.au or contact the M Clinic on 9227 0734 to make an appointment. Wish you all a Happy Holiday Tony Bober M Clinic

with the current HIV medication paradigm, where people are condemned to lifelong HIV medication. It appears as though the urgency to cure HIV has waned given that almost 95% of people are on benign drugs and expected to live an almost normal life expectancy. Extremely grateful as most people with HIV are, it is easy to look over the fence with envy at advancements in other areas of health like Hepatitis C where almost all can now be cured.
