SOMETHING DIFFERENT Last month we were discussing how OUTinPerth could make a greater impact in different areas. Our team brainstormed ideas for the year ahead including how we contribute to conversations about gender identity and transitioning, suicide prevention, support for people who have experienced sexual assault, the level of drug use within our community, sexual health and HIV and AIDS prevention and many other serious topics. We also looked at the tag line that’s featured on our cover for many years - ‘Gay and Lesbian Life and Style’. It’s always been a word play on the phrase used by people who are homophobic and describe non-heterosexual sexuality as a ‘lifestyle choice’. We decided that this phrase had outlived its relevance. A phrase that incudes gay and lesbian – without acknowledging the full spectrum of diversity is sexuality and gender was not an apt descriptor for OUTinPerth in 2015.

We hope to bring you stories told from a different perspective, feature personalities and celebrities who are remarkable because they are different, and if we chat to someone who is more mainstream – we’re committed to asking them different questions. Last year during an interview performance artist Strykermeyer reflected on his creative process and said to me that he thought one of rules of creativity was to always run away from anything that was constant.

We did consider adding the alphabet soup of LGBTIQQAAOPPTSNBLTTLCRSVPBRBLOLETC but it seemed somewhat cumbersome. So we changed our tag line to read ‘Something Different’. Because we’re all about celebrating difference, in sexuality, in gender and in thinking.

Dancing With The Stars Charlie Hides is back for Fringe World 2015 and will be performing his new show ‘Charlie Hides Whooo?’ at Connections from 18 – 21 February. The acclaimed comedic impersonator tells us what he’s got in store.
You’ve worked with companies all over the world. What attracted you to the Western Australian Ballet?
You are known for your impersonations of divas, from Cher to Madonna to Lady Gaga – who is your all-time favourite star to imitate? I have a lot of fun playing Cher because I’ve turned her into a comedy character loosely based on Cher, the Academy Award winning star…. The real Cher thinks it’s funny so knowing she’s watching when I play her adds to the fun…She’s even used some of MY jokes in interviews and on Twitter which makes it surreal.
French ballerina Florence Leroux-Coleno spoke to us about her exciting new role as a soloist for Western Australian Ballet, and her upcoming performance in William Forsythe’s “Steptext” for outdoor spectacular Ballet in the Quarry.
You’ve recently posted videos of some new kids on the block, such as Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift & Miley Cyrus. How do you develop an impersonation from a casual catch phrase into a fully formed character?
They are going well! Everybody seems to be pretty ready (she laughs)… not completely, but ready.
Lots of research. When I choose a new celeb to portray I watch all their TV interviews, music videos, everything I can find online. I look for signature gestures, turns of phrase, rhythm of speech, accent, idiosyncrasies and quirks. Then I distill it into a character that’s like the star but not an exact impersonation. You also have a number of original characters (Loretta Lee Jackson, Kandi Kane Baxter). Do you prefer bringing your own creations to life or imitating real people? That’s like comparing Pizza to chocolate, I love ‘em both and would never want to live in a world without either. With an original character I have more freedom as a comedy writer, I can go into politically incorrect territory that most celebrities would never go near. To complete the chocolate and pizza analogy, my perfect meal… my live show combines two things that bring me joy, playing celebs and original characters. Cher, Lady Gaga & Kylie Minogue have given you praise for your work. Have you heard from any celebrities being offended by your impersonations? Yes, Lana Del Rey said I was “an asshole!” But many of her most loyal fans love my impersonation of Lana and see it as the affectionate tribute that it’s intended to be. Who can we expect to see with you at your Fringe World shows this year? Any new faces? Yes, this year I’m bringing Dolly Parton and Joan Rivers with me… Joan has a LOT to talk about as now she has all the hottest gossip from heaven and a unique vantage point of the red carpet disasters.
It’s one part of the world I’ve never seen before! What I like about this company is that we push it really far. We spend about one month in the studio for each show. You have time to get into the style and to work on it. Once you’re on stage you’re totally ready to do what you have to do. It’s really interesting because you can go further with your abilities, and you discover more about choreography and style – it’s a great challenge. Plus I get to work with some amazing people like Kathryn Bennetts, I feel really privileged to have that opportunity. She pushes us really far – out of our limits.
How are rehearsals for Steptext going?
What are some of the challenges in this piece for you as a dancer? This is the hardest dance I have ever done. It’s 25 minutes, pretty much without stopping. You might get off the stage for ten seconds, but you have to come back straight away. We work a lot with our partners, it’s like a conversation, you have to listen to each other a lot. We swap partners often so it’s changing all the time. You’ve seen rehearsals for the other three dances in Ballet at the Quarry – how do they differ? There is a piece from Daniel Roberts, who is with the company, and two pieces from Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. They’re very different. They have a very different energy, different style. In Annabelle’s pieces the pas de deux is really slow, it’s like watching a couple on stage, an intimate duet. Daniel’s piece, ‘Hold the Forth’, is very different again, it’s like a video game on stage. There are characters with flash wigs, it’s a very funny one, I’m sure it will draw every kind of audience.
The Quarry Amphitheatre is an unusual outdoor venue, what other memorable spaces has dance taken you to? With my old company we were dancing for festivals so there was a lot of dancing outside which I love. I think there is a special relationship between the dancers and the audience. I really love dancing outside, it brings something else. Sometimes in a theatre the audience is really dark and you feel a bit alone on stage. Outdoors, you can feel the atmosphere and feel the audience respond to what you are doing and I really love that. The Quarry Amphitheatre is beautiful, but I hope it doesn’t rain! That’s another challenge with dancing – 25 minutes in 45 degree heat is quite interesting, but the humidity and rain can change things too. Softer ground means we may have to readjust at the last minute. Ballet at the Quarry runs from February 6 – 28 at Quarry Amphitheatre, City Beach. Tickets available from Ticketmaster.com

It’s that time of year again: back to school. For some, this means taking the plunge as first time undergraduates. For others, it could be a goal to achieve further qualifications, or developing skills in a newfound passion. Whatever your story, higher education should safe and accessible for all. Here are the types of queer resources you can find in Western Australia’s universities.
Curtin University: In 2013, Curtin University was named the Highest Ranking University for LGBT equality at the national Pride in Diversity PID Awards; Curtin was also ranked seventh in the top ten employers for LGBT people and the University’s Ally program was a runner-up for LGBT Employee Network of the Year. people Actress, musician and activist Calpernia Addams has made considerable contributions to the portrayal and visibility of transgender people in mainstream media. A war veteran herself, the 2003 film ‘Soldier’s Girl’ was based on the story of the murder of her army boyfriend by fellow soldiers in 1999. She’s also made a career from entertaining and hosts a popular cabaret night in Hollywood, and has consulted several notable actors on their portrayals of transgender characters, including Felicity Huffman and Jared Leto. Addams spoke to OUTinPerth ahead of her journey to Australia from her home in Los Angeles. “Not only am I just getting to come to Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras but I’m going to see several other cities as well, so I can’t think of a better introduction to Australia than to get to bounce around and see different communities, different groups of people, but all of them sort of unified in that moment of LGBT visibility and sharing ideas.”
Addams will be making an appearance at Pride Fairday, bringing with her an array of instruments and a repertoire of classic songs. “I’m excited, I’m going to sing some of my original songs and cabaret standards, like the songs of Mae West, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe but in a sort of delicate, pretty way, using just the harp and my voice.” West, Dietrich and Monroe are a holy trinity to Addams, who admired them for their political activism as well as
their performance skills. “They never ran for office or anything but they were very comfortable speaking up for communities of people and being an entertainer and I take inspiration from that too.” Addams explained that throughout her career as a performer, she’s always found the LGBT community to be the most welcoming audience. “My heart is always with the LGBT community especially because early in my transition my family cast me out, general straight society was not kind or welcoming because I was visibly trans, but the gay and lesbian community, and the trans community, and the drag community, they were the only
people who took me at face value and encouraged me and became my dear friends and supporters so I really feel at home when I’m in and among the LGBT community performing, even though I live my normal life as a heterosexual woman nowadays.” For Addams, performance and activism are a natural combination. “I was originally an entertainer and was drawn in to activism when my boyfriend was murdered in 1999 and I just felt it was my duty to get involved and do what I could.” The performer cites ‘A Soldier’s Girl’, the film based from the experience as one of her proudest artistic contributions. “It’s a painful story to see it told over and over but the movie has done so much more to open peoples’ hearts and stir their empathy and stir their interests in these political issues.
The movie’s done so much more than I could ever have done alone.” Since the film was released in 2003, Addams said that representations of transgender people in the media have made significant progress. “Over here in the US we’ve had Laverne Cox and the new series ‘Transparent’ and some other series are really breaking out. My film came out more than a decade ago and Hollywood was so different back then. But I’ve been working hard ever since I moved to Hollywood educating filmmakers and actors, advocating for trans portrayals that are successful.” Addams has consulted a number of actors in their portrayal of transgender characters, including Jared Leto’s recent Oscar-winning performance as Rayon in ‘Dallas Buyers’ Club’. She shared what she focuses on when advising on playing trans characters: “A lot of times outsiders will assume that trans people are a monolithic community, that they all have the same issues, and they all have the same beliefs and they’re all doing the same life plan or whatever. But actually there are trans people with an infinite array of possible dreams and desires and circumstances and everything. So I dispel that notion first, that it’s sort of a one-note, monolithic state of being, and then I try to understand what the character is and educate them.” Calpernia Addams will be appearing at Fair Day on Sunday February 15th Tickets are available from www.ticketek.com.au Sophie Joske

Mike Hadreas, who performs as Perfume Genius, released his third album last year. It was a collection of songs that had critics clamouring for adjectives as the musician delivered a record that was distinctly different to his previous output. While the first two Perfume Genius records contained songs that were filled with tender lyrics, pianos and strings. The new album ‘Too Bright’ showed that Hadreas had something deeper to say about identity, body image and homophobia and a darker sound to convey those thoughts.

music Hadreas chatted to OUTinPerth from his home in Seattle. Over the weekend former REM front man Michael Stipe had delivered a surprise performance and had included a Perfume Genius song in his set. Hadreas admits he was pretty excited to hear the news. “It feels awesome,” Hadreas exclaimed, “I grew up listening to him and being a big fan of his, it’s a pretty crazy feeling when someone you love covers something that you did.” Hadreas admits that he did think about how this new direction would be received by his fans, but notes that his worry about the release was less than the anxiety that had gotten to him while attempting to make the follow up to his previous work. “For sure, but I’m very proud of it and it’s the first time I felt very certain of the music I’d made. I thought it was good.
think of the songs. I stalled for a long time before writing. “I knew it was the music I was supposed to be making. I knew that I was talking about things that were important to me and it felt very real and honest. It sounds cheesy, but I felt inspired and knew that I liked it, it sounded good to me, whether it would sound good to other people? I didn’t know, but I knew I’d made the album I was supposed to.” While the singers lyrics are often extremely personal and honest, Hadreas said there are times when he treads more carefully. “I guess when it’s not just about me. I have a song on the second album and a lot of it is my Mom’s story. I was worried that she wouldn’t like it and she would be uncomfortable. I played that song for her and we talked a lot about it before the album, but that’s when it gets weird, when we start writing about other people.”
Usually you think that something’s good for about a week, and then delete it.” Hadreas laughs.
Hadreas laughs as he tells me his own well of creativity is far from dry.
“Still I had no idea if other people would like it, I didn’t know if people who like my quieter music would like it, or if I’d get new listeners from it. It’s still pretty risky.”
“When it comes to shitty experiences and insecurities, I’ve got enough of them to talk about for a couple more albums.”
Hadreas shares that he went through a long period of anxiety before he started making the record. “There was a long process to get to the point where I wrote all the music for it. I really struggled with my ego, and worrying a lot about my career and what people would
When recording ‘Too Bright’ Hadreas collaborated much more than on previous albums. Portishead member Adrian Utley served as producer for the record. Hadreas said that collaboration has become an important part of his creative process.
I wrote this album knowing I was going to go into the studio. I keep that in mind now when I’m writing, it doesn’t feel as much as me being on my own.” “I’m really happy with who ended up realizing the songs, I love them all. It was like Kismet.” One topic Hadreas often touches on in his work is homophobia but when asked when he last encountered homophobia he admits it was largely internalised. “It was probably me, that’s the weird thing,” Haread said. “I’ve become more hermit like when I get home. When I’m on tour I wear my nail polish and flowy things, then when I come home I take it off and wear a hoody and become anonymous. I feel like a spy which is a really strange feeling. “We’ve moved out of the city, and it’s not like the likelihood of me being yelled at or someone stopping me to have some weird Christian conversation is higher. But it’s easier for me if I want to go get a sandwich to be more incognito, and that feels like homophobia. “I had a guy come up to me recently and ask me, ‘Hey are you gay?’ and I said ‘Yeah’, and then he went on to some long discussion, and he wasn’t mean or threatening me but I just thought, I’m just waiting for the bus, I didn’t ask to have this conversation. Then I thought about what I was wearing…but even when I’m dressing down, it’s still pouring out of me.” Perfume Genius is playing at the Chevron Festival Gardens on February 13th with support from Aldous Huxley. Head to www.2015.perthfestival.com.au for tickets. The album ‘Too Bright’ is available now. Graeme Watson

Irish drag queen Panti Bliss is a woman of many talents. In an Irish political scandal some refer to as ‘Pantigate’, the performer spoke out about homophobia, asserting that journalists and organisations campaigning against LGBT rights were in essence homophobic. Following the resulting controversy,. Panti was invited to Dublin’s Abbey Theatre to give a speech about homophobia. A YouTube video of the speech went viral and rapidly attracted messages of support and was eventually remixed by the Pet Shop Boys. Panti has since gone from strength to strength, writing a memoir, giving a TEDx talk and receiving a Person of the Year Award from Stephen Fry. She’ll be appearing at the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. OUTinPerth managed to catch Panti on a rare quiet night in. She spoke to us from her home in Dublin whilst putting the dog out. Panti shared that she’d made the visit to Australia several times before. “First time was in the early nineties, I don’t remember that much about it.” She laughed. “Then in the last few years I was there with shows a couple of times. But I’ve never been to Mardi Gras before, so that’s exciting.” As well as appearing in the Mardi Gras Parade, Panti will also be performing her one-woman show, ‘High Heels in Low Places’. “There are a lot of autobiographical stories in it.” Panti said. “I got tied up in a big political scandal here so it’s telling the story of that
scandal from years by, but then also lots of fun things about being a drag queen. There’s a big story about Madonna. It’s fun, it’s silly but it has a serious point towards the end, you know. I’m leading you somewhere serious in a comic way.”
very inspiring as a kid”. In fact, Navratilova got in contact with Panti about her speech at the Abbey Theatre, which Panti cites as her proudest moment. “All the rest, who cares? But Martina Navratilova? Oh my Gosh.” She laughed.
While her social commentary has caused recent public furor, the performer is no stranger to speaking out. “Activism has always been part of what I do. But sometimes, nowadays I think people take me a little too seriously, they expect me to be the LGBT rights warrior all the time and sometimes I have to remind them that I’m an entertainer.”
What Panti finds inspiring is the acceptance of one’s own differences and oddities, something she saw in Navratilova and something she strives for in herself. “Without going to Oprah on you, I’m trying to get people to consider living their lives truthfully” she said.
As a performer, Panti’s influences are very eclectic, from ‘Charlie’s Angels to Maggie Smith in her 1969 film ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’. “I always wanted to look like a Californian beach girl so add in a bit of Maggie Smith in there and you get something like how Panti turned out.” Panti said, citing Martina Navratilova as a personal hero. “She was a strong dyke, out and proud, when there were no out and proud dykes.” Panti explained. “I found that
“Basically what my shows are always doing is rather than pointing and laughing at difference it’s celebrating it. But you can find fun in peoples’ difference and your own difference and celebrate the things about you that make you different and quirky and weird. The kind of things that when you were a teenager you didn’t want to be true about yourself, are actually the things I think you should be thrilled about as well.” Sophie Joske

GALSWA Rehearse for Fringe World The Gay and Lesbian Singers of Western Australia are getting ready for a repeat performance of their ‘Best of Broadway’ show. The community singing group will bring ‘Encore’ an abridged version of their popular show from 2014 to Fringe World this month. Rob Lines, who joined the choir two years ago, said there were lots of different reasons why he joined the group but the great social interaction was at the top of his list. “I enjoy singing and you get to meet people that you wouldn’t otherwise meet” Lines said. One of Lines favourite parts of GALSWA’s show is a number performed by all the men in the choir.
“The choir sings large parts of the program, but then there are numbers done by smaller groups,” He explained. “There are six men in the choir, we call ourselves ‘the six pack’ – because we have a six pack between us! “We are definitely doing a number called ‘Bring on the Men’ which is a lot fun. I think the audience enjoys it so much because it’s a number that we really enjoy performing.” Lines said. Catch GALSWA’s ‘Encore’ at Fringe World on February 22nd, head to www.fringeworld.com.au for tickets.

A march calling for greater community awareness to suicide prevention and mental health was held earlier this month. OUTinPerth spoke to the event organiser Marishka Muran about what prompted her to set up the event. Having lost two sons to suicide, the issue is very close to Muran’s heart. She was also motivated by hearing about the experiences of others. “Because I’ve lost two sons to suicide within two months of each other I’ve always had my foot in the door. I just have been watching different programs and everything like that and reading everybody’s emails about not getting help because they’re being depressed and I

thought ‘well, it only takes one person and it looks like I’m it.’” she said. “People are being turned away from organisations because they’re not enough beds, they can’t help and I’m getting emails every day. Muran said that a lack of resources for those with mental illness is a big part of the problem. “As far as doctors are concerned, they do everything in their power to get help for these people that have got mental health issues, they can’t get them in. They can’t get people into appointments, they can’t get beds. Something’s missing here and it’s got to change, now.” Sophie Joske

New Foundation to Support Indigenous LGBTI People A new initiative has been launched to create a foundation to deliver support to indigenous LGBTI people and provide suicide prevention strategies. A crowdsource fundraising campaign has been launched to fund the Black Rainbow Living Well Foundation through the website StartSomeGood. Founder Dayemon Bonson told OUTinPerth that the organisation’s aim will be to raise issues that are nuanced to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTI people. “Racism and LGBTI-Phobia can have a significant impact on us; affecting our mental health and our social and emotional wellbeing, yet there are no direct supports or resources.” Bonson said. “In an act of self determination we are establishing Australia’s first, and we think the world, dedicated Indigenous LGBTI suicide prevention and mental health support source for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTI people and our families and communities.”
Bonson said it was important that the foundation existed in its own right; “We don’t want to be competing for attention in the LGBTI sector nor do we want to competing for attention in the Indigenous sector. In both, we are the minority and it has been a struggle, in both camps to get heard and get traction. As our own entity we won’t have to rely the organisation in those sectors, rather we can influence and work collaboratively in this space.” Bonson said it was confounding that many major mental health organisations didn’t have a dedicated LGBTI staff member or any indigenous staff; “This is troubling when both these groups, individually, are at the highest risk of suicide in the country.” To donate to the fundraising campaign head to: www.startsomegood.com/blackrainbow

Last year Olympic Diving champion Matthew Mitcham came to Fringe World and performed his cabaret show ‘Twists and Turns’ for the very first time. Now he’s coming back for an encore performance. Mitcham shares that he can’t wait to get back to Fringe World, reflecting on his debut performance last year he shares that he was full of nerves before taking to the stage for the first time. “My God, I was terrified!” Mitcham said, “Before that first show I was sitting back stage, literally two minutes before pushing through the curtain absolutely terrified. After the show I was sitting back stage freaking out and trying to keep a lid on it, and my musical director came up to me and said to me ‘Before the show you were so calm, cool and collected.’ And I thought, ‘if only you knew.’ “I guess years of diving and performing at the highest level in sport has taught me to keep it hidden, because you’re always ‘packing your dacks’ when you’re at the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games, but you have to keep it cool, calm and collected and not let it affect your performance.” Since his debut performance in Perth Mitcham has taken the show twice to Melbourne, and to Darwin and Sydney. Before his return season in Perth, he’ll be taking the show to Brisbane. Mitcham said every performance of the show, which is based on his autobiography, is a little different.

“It changes every night, sometimes I’ll try out new jokes on purpose, sometimes they just kind of come out, or they’re brought on by a heckler. The ones that don’t get a laugh are forgotten and the one’s that make the crowd roar with laughter are locked away and we keep on using them! “I think by the time we get back to Perth the show will have changed a little because we’re playing slightly bigger venues and we need to expand the show a little to match the stage. We’ve got some ideas though and we keep it intimate.” Mitcham said.
Mitcham said that performing the show in which he shares his stories, including many tales about his sexuality, mental health and substance abuse has been very rewarding. “The reward of sharing is making an impression. When I meet everyone after the show so many people come up and tell me which part of the show they liked, and why, and how it affected them, it opens up a dialogue and people share their stories with me after the show, it’s very powerful. That’s what makes sharing our stories so worth it.” Mitcham shared that he’s loving his performing experience and he hopes that working in the entertainment industry will be a career option for him when he retires from diving. “Whether it’s on TV, or radio, or stage, or all of the above – that’s what I want to do. I’ve always been a performer, even when diving. Doing the show has given me a great idea about the kind of lifestyle that it is and given me glimpse of the future.” Mitcham said. Hey Mrs DJ I grew up going to record stores and little galleries and spending hours looking through hundreds of old vinyl records at Music and Video Exchanges in London (once I was old enough to realise they were awesome, before that I used to just kind of hang about, hoping to find some kind of awesome Spice Girl memorabilia). There is something slightly poetic about being able to look at and touch music before you buy it. Now, sadly, I spend most of my music-finding related time online or listening to the radio. No longer am I entranced by an album cover and my ability to flick through records like a champion is dwindling. The ideals that stores such as the ones I have described have been embodied beautifully by the guys at Apropos Provisional in Subiaco. Described as store, reading room and gallery, it’s a pretty unique space. I walked in and was completely enticed by how everything was laid out. It was full but spacious at the same time and as I wandered around, taking in the art, books and records that were carefully placed throughout the room, I was taken back to being a kid at Music and Video Exchange, excited and unsure of what I wanted to look at, but knowing I could sit there for hours. They’re situated slightly at the wrong edge of Subi, just too far down from Thomas Road but not quite close enough to Rokeby Road to get the foot traffic that they deserve, but it’s really worth that 100 metre walk.
The funkiness of the store really got me and as I tried to work out which records I wanted to listen to, while I looked through their awesome photo books, I was stopped in my tracks by the biggest Prince poster I’d ever seen. It was awesome. Looking back, everything about the store is just so freaking simple, but it works so well. I wanted to sit in there for hours, just absorbing all that they had. On the first Tuesday of every month, they run Ladies Night where chicks have the chance to learn how to DJ. Now I reckon that’s pretty cool because; 1. Chick DJ’s are freaking hot; 2. Who doesn’t want to be a DJ?; and 3. Chick DJ’s a freaking hot. There’s some kind of faux champagne, and networking and learning and all that cool stuff (and I hear you get to play with records!) So I’ve added the first Tuesday of March to my list of things I really must do and before then I plan to spend a Saturday listening to all of their records, looking through all of their books and deciding what I just must have. If you’re into art, books, music, DJing or just cool stuff, then check it out. Find out more at www.aproposprovisional.com Alice Mod

Perth born songstress Toby is at home for a cherished moment with her new family before she sets off on a world tour to promote her latest album ‘Nobody Told Me’ Are you excited to launch your new album at home? Yeah I am! I’m really excited. It’s good because I haven’t done a big band thing for about four years now, this show has a 10 piece band, it’s always sort of ‘the more the merrier’ on stage for me. What were some of your inspirations for this record? Well, the old love thing is always there. It’s funny, I usually bring out a record every two years or so and I was having this major drought in song writing, I think probably because I was happy. It’s an interesting album because there is more happiness. There are other peoples’ stories as well – one of our main songs is about a friends’ father passing away and his first ever child being born that same week – there’s more storytelling in a way. Do you have plans to spend much time in Perth, now that you’re home? I don’t actually! I never do. Last year we were in Europe for four months and my wife Amy was pregnant throughout that time. We came up with the fabulous idea of getting pregnant and going on tour, which probably wasn’t the smartest idea we’ve had, but she handled it amazingly. We had 50 shows across 8 countries
and she dealt with it really well considering she was also tour manager. We slipped in a honeymoon in Italy during that time too. Of course, in November our son Angus was born, so he’s coming on his first European tour in March! That’s exciting! Yeah we’re also really nervous actually, but more than anything we’re just hoping there are no disasters. Please be good, Angus! Will you be stopping by at Fair Day this year? Yeah, we’re playing a show! It’s our first Fair Day as well, so I’m really excited about that. You’ve got to get amongst it all! What I loved about it last year was that it was so family oriented, which was really lovely. We’re excited to take Angus along to his first Pride celebration. You can catch Toby at Fair Day, February 16 in Hyde Park and her ‘Nobody Told Me’ album launch on February 21 at Fremantle Arts Centre. Tickets available from Oztix.com Leigh Hill
You Give Me Fever Singer Jessie Gordon is extremely busy during Fringe World. Gordon’s enjoyed sold out shows with Stratosfunk’s tribute to Etta James, she’s also received critical acclaim for her performance in ‘Speak Easy’, and has been performing as part of swing band The Darling Buds of May. Yet she still has several more shows in the massive Fringe World program.
Local musician Harold Maxwell has been working on his self titled debut album for year. OUTinPerth spoke to Maxwell just a week before the release of his album, which is a collaborative effort between himself and Adam Lunn and Stewart Branden. As can be expected, the singer was a bundle of nerves and excitement. He shared his hopes for the album.
“When I was 15 I used to write songs with my classmate and he used to play guitar and I would write lyrics. I used to record it on my home computer, and this was back in the nineties. I used to record it with my web came microphone and it sounded so bad. But for me back then it was kind of cool, I suppose. I tried to get my friends to hear it but none of them would be interested it was that bad.

“I did a lot of research, she also did a lot of research and discovered the breath of work she’d done including writing a lot of lyrics.” While ‘Fever’ has been recorded by many artists Gordon said this does not make the song exceptionally challenging. “To me songs which are the most challenging are ones that have to convey a huge amount of emotion or if there is one version that is really well know. Something like Etta James’ ‘At Last’ is hard because everyone knows that one version and it’s filled with emotion, that’s really hard to perform live but if it’s a song that ben recorded by many people that actually helps, you can draw on all the versions. It’s such a playful and sexy song, I find that really appealing.”
“I’m hoping that people can relate to the songs, and enjoy them, and share them with friends. But the main reason that I did the album is because I love music. I suppose everyone does. But when I listen to a song sometimes I feel a connection to the song and the lyrics and it helps me go through a certain point in my life.” Maxwell has been making music since his teenage years. “I was in high school. I used to be so bad. I was listening to my old demos the other day and I thought ‘I hope no one ever hears these!’ I wanted to throw it out because it did make me cringe so bad. But I thought, no, I’ll keep it for nostalgia, just put it on the shelf where no one can see it.” He laughed.
started as a big band singer, which is how I started too.
But over the years if you just keep on trying, keep on doing it, eventually you’ll improve.” As well as building his skill level, Maxwell’s musical style is also in a constant state of evolution. “. It changes with my personality and my life, I suppose. Like the older I get, I discover new things and learn a lot of things in life and that adds to the music lyrically as well. My music tastes change over the years, I used to listen to pop and now I’m more into R n’ B and dance, who knows, I might be doing trance next year!” Harold Maxwell’s album available through iTunes.

One of those show’s is ‘Fever: The Music of Peggy Lee’ which is on later this month. When it comes to knowledge about Peggy Lee, I admit to Gordon that I don’t really know anything about the popular singer beyond her signature tune, and I also have a copy of her singing Otis Redding’s ‘Sitting on the Dock of a Bay’ on my iPod. “That is A-Ok,” Gordon reassures me, “Everyone knows that she sings ‘Fever’. She was pretty hip and recorded a lot of pop music in her later career. She recorded some Beatles stuff and things that you just don’t expect.” Gordon shares that her starting point for creating the show was a love of Peggy Lee’s signature tune ‘Fever’. “I have loved ‘Fever’ and have sung it with the Darling Buds of May for many years. There is a wealth of other stuff she’s done and I knew she’d
Aside from her amazing voice, Peggy Lee was also known for her beauty and her platinum blonde hair. Gordon said she has been asked if she’ll be going blonde for the show. “I said look she’s cute but I don’t think I can pull off platinum blonde hair, I’m a red head and will just be singing the songs.” Another song Gordon looks for to performing in the show is from a classic Disney movie. “I never realized that Peggy Lee wrote the lyrics and sang the song ‘He’s a Tramp’ from Lady and the Tramp. We do it in the show and it’s a highlight.” ‘Fever – The Music of Peggy Lee’ is at Fringe World from February 14 – 18. Tickets available from www.fringeworld.com.au Graeme Watson

Belle and Sebastian Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance Nine albums and nineteen years into their recording career, Belle and Sebastian have surprisingly changed their sound and released an album filled with electronic disco sounds. The baby hasn’t been thrown out with the bathwater though, their classic twee folky sound and clever lyrics remain. Lead single ‘The Party Anthem’ is a stomper, while ‘Enter Silvia Plath’ is an intriguing dance tune, other songs like ‘Nobody’s Empire’ and ‘Ever Had a Little Faith’ are more familiar sounding. Quality from start to finish. - Graeme Watson
Fiorious – Fever soaring vocal house with a definite queer sensibility Lonely Boy - I Like Disco we love disco and this track is ace Fear of Dawn featuring Boswell – Alright a great summer dance track, there’s a stack of great remixes too Giorgio Moroder featuring Kylie Minogue – Right Here, Right Now disco legend teams up with Kylie for a track that is slamingly good The Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra – Disco Supreme (Al Kent Edit) surely the most epic track of the month, a massive 13 minute disco journey Daniel Johns – Ariel Love it’s a long way from Silverchair, Daniel Johns releases
After a 13 year hiatus, last year Aphex Twin released the acclaimed album Syro. Now just months later comes this shorter album that clocks in at just over 30 minutes. Filled with drums, cymbals and clunky piano this is a very different musical journey, but one that is just as interesting. ‘Piano Un10 it Happened’ is a gorgeous piano tune, while ‘Diskhat ALL Prepared1Mix 13’ is a funky number that retains a raw sound filled with so many intriguing sounds. If you really want to get into Aphex Twin he just put 110 older tracks up on Soundcloud. - Graeme Watson

Bjork Vulnicura
Mister & Sunbird The Anatomy of Mister & Sunbird The Perth based Swings/Blues/Latin extravaganza have entered 2015 with an album that delivers a creative package served as part book, part album broken down into different body parts. It as wonderful as it sounds. Chapter 1 (in both the small book/ record) equals BONES, with ‘Rockin’ in the Soft Parade’ and ‘Girls don’t like Rhyme’ standing out as the two strongest tracks. Moving through chapters BLOOD, ORGANS, BRAIN AND BIRTH, the record finishes up with a Latin guitar instrumental that leaves you swooning. - Hope Wealcan
Bjork’s ninth solo album of her adult music career has been rush released after the tracks leaked online. Bjork is one of their artists who is consistently delivering high quality work but yet you find yourself thinking; ‘Do I need yet another Bjork’ album?’ The answer is an astounding yes! Bjork delivers a wonderfully interesting record. Filled with a symphony orchestra, clever beats and Bjork’s endlessly interesting voice. With several long tracks on the album, the longest is over 10 minutes, Bjork has been given the artistic freedom to really explore new territories. - Graeme Watson
Maxence Cyrin Nocturne (Solo Piano) Cyrin first gained attention with his album ‘Modern Rhapsodies’ which saw him deliver classical versions of modern dance tracks. Cyrin’s own work is equally as beautiful. Opening up with the ‘A Tale from the Past’ a mellow and sparse piano work the tone is set for this largely laid back sounding album. The pace picks up on ‘China Club’ a sprightly number with a definite nod to traditional Chinese melodies. ‘In the Grey of the Night’ and ‘Frozen Palace’ quickly return the mood to more mellow territory. Closing track ‘It was a Very Good Year’ has an intricate melody. - Graeme Watson
The latest record from the Counting Crows is a collection of uninspiring tracks that blend from one song to the next. The record starts with a long instrumental intro into a country style crooning that is irritating at best. Eight minutes of ‘Pallisades Park’ leads into ‘Earthquake Driver’, a song best suited at a tacky wedding reception once the elderly start getting up to dance. Two tracks start with vocal count in’s (aren’t they reserved for live sets?). The only good song is the final track ‘Possibility Days’, still not worth the wait. - Hope Wealcan

Starkly contrasting with Counting Crows, My Brightest Diamond kick starts the record with an instrumental that is pure bliss to the ears and leads to incredible vocals backed with a heavy bass that you wouldn’t expect to accompany such sultry tones. A surprise introduction to this artist has left me searching for more, that’s a successful record, right? There’s not one downfall to this well-produced album that blends musical components you wouldn’t expect to work. - Hope Wealcan

Diana Krall Wallflower Diana Krall has made a career out of delivering luscious versions of classic tunes. On this new record she takes on well-known songs from the ‘70s and ‘80s and the results are simply gorgeous. Krall drapes her sultry vocals over ‘California Dreaming’, as well as The Eagles’ ‘Desperado’, her take on The Carpenters’ ‘Superstar’ is a slow and hazy backed by a full orchestra – it’s heaven. Also on the menu well known songs from Crowded House, 10CC, Bob Dylan and Jim Croce. Most impressive is her take on Elton John’s ‘Sorry Seem to be the Hardest Word’ – which strikes the perfect balance of melancholy and woe. - Graeme Watson

The project is one of several that Cole has coming up in 2015 including the release of her autobiography and a new solo album. Cole took a moment off from her hectic touring schedule to chat to OUTinPerth. I was listening to your new album this morning – when you put all these songs by women together, it highlights that country music has long been a place for really strong women. It is, it definitely takes me back in time. A lot of those songs were old when I was born; they just stand the test of time I think. Someone like Loretta Lynne used to say in this business you have to be first, different or brilliant and I think a lot of these women we’re listening to are absolute firsts. Did you notice any themes amongst these artists work? I think so. I think there’s a strength of character that comes through in Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt and Tammy Wynette and Emmylou Harris – there’s a strength of character that I didn’t think prevailed as much in other genres. In country music, they were listened to – they MADE themselves listened to. Someone like Loretta Lynne came along with a bunch of kids and started telling stories about her life and being a coal miner’s daughter. She touched on subjects like the pill and stuff like that… People didn’t talk about that stuff back in the ‘60s, like I said before they were firsts. It was interesting, as I listened I thought I know this one, its Dolly Parton or Patsy Cline, and there were a few names that I was not so familiar with but when I actually listened I realised I do know the songs. It depends how entrenched you were, or how much you were spoon-fed Country music as a kid … and I was. My mum was a country singer and so is Melinda’s mum, so I suppose we had that in the household as kids and that’s what we thought music sounded like, and we thought everybody’s mum was a singer too, I remember thinking that was what mums did for a living. How did you and Melinda Schneider team up? I remember meeting Mel when I was a teenager when I first moved to Sydney, when I first drove over in my Datsun 120Y and I went and saw this mother/daughter duo and I thought, “Wow I sing with my mum as well, that’s really weird” and I was certain we’d be friends one day and we certainly have been for a long time. We’ve threatened to work together but it’s never happened until now but Mel had this idea and I thought, ‘Yep, I’ll go with that’. Do you think you’re more exposed to country music if you live in the country? Possibly? The irony there is that I’m from Adelaide and Melinda’s from Sydney so it doesn’t really work in that sense, but I think that a lot of people in rural areas relate to that kind of music, but that doesn’t mean you can’t live in the city and love it, especially a lot of these amazing women that we pay tribute to on this record. Is there pressure as a country artist to crossover and enter the mainstream market? I think there might be and I think I felt that a little bit when I was younger but I can honestly say that I don’t give a rats ass about that! I just do what I love. If somebody outside of country music is listening then that’s great, but I don’t go fishing in the main stream. Do you have plans for some of your own material in the future? I have! April 10 to be exact. I got inspired, I have an autobiography coming out in March as well and I got really inspired writing that and doing these old songs with Mel and I thought I’m really ready to write a bunch of new songs. I didn’t want to wait; I didn’t want to let the grass grow for too long. That album is called ‘Sweet Rebecca’. Are you Sweet Rebecca? I guess I was as a kid. Gathering the pictures for the autobiography, I found some where I looked so young and so sweet and so naïve and I wrote a song kind of to myself that says “you’ve got a lot to learn young lady!” ‘Sweet Rebecca’ will be your first music since you came out, has coming out changed the way you write music? I think it’s changed what people are thinking when they listen to the songs, because I think a lot of people went back when I came out and worked out what I meant… It’s different I guess, if it’s a love song and you realise I’m singing about a woman rather than a male but I suppose that’s about different perceptions.
It’s changed the freedom I have when I write, I’ve always been a very literal kind of writer, I think we all are in singer/songwriter land… see truck, say truck… It’s not a look for the hidden meaning type of thing. I certainly feel a sense of freedom with the book and writing and obviously, having come out publicly two years ago, I’m just a much better person for it… I didn’t know that there was anything wrong, but now I’m better. Were you surprised by any of the reactions when you came out? I was pleasantly affected. I was worried… I suppose that’s the only reason you stay in the closet, because you worry about what people think. Even though I was out to my family, and everybody around me… and the several thousand women I’d slept with (she laughs), it wasn’t until I came out publicly that I realised how freeing that is. I did it for several reasons, firstly because I wanted my son to know that we live in a world where we can be ourselves and I think that’s one of the most important lessons as a parent that you can teach your child, and I wanted to have that sense of freedom but I also wanted people in regional Australia that are gay to feel like they’re not alone and if I’m a country singer that they admire and they like, that might kind of make them feel better. I certainly know how great I felt when Magda Szubanski came out, it just made me feel validated as a person that somebody else could go on TV and go “it’s okay! It’s cool!” I still get letters, and I have thousands, from people in regional Australia thanking me for doing that. It’s so important; we are a community that’s not just in the cities. TV In Season 1, you and husband Ben launched your alcohol line La Mascara, how has the business been faring?
The Real Housewives family continues to grow, as last year saw our favourite girls from Toorak step onto the scene. This year the ladies are back and realer than ever. Resident psychic Jackie Gillies foresees that fans will be even more hooked on the drama this season.
Tell us a little bit about shooting season 2 of Real Housewives of Melbourne It will be a very exciting show, there’s going to be a very different dynamic. There are two new ladies that have come in and that’s really shaken things up. There’s laughter, tears, drama, accusations… I just sit in the corner and go “Oh my god. What’s going on?” I feel quite blessed because at the end of the day, being on a show like this, you get to meet people that you probably wouldn’t normally meet in your everyday life. So we can expect some drama with the new girls? I think the thing about Real Housewives, let’s keep it real here, is that viewers love seeing a bit of drama. There are a couple of storylines where the ladies blow up… I think viewers are going to be in a bit of shock actually. There are a couple of arguments that I actually get into, I’m the kind of person that’s very straight forward and very honest. Sometimes when people are confronted with the truth they don’t like it. Oh well, what can I do?
Like I said to Chyka, the angels do work. I believe what you think is actually what you create in life. With La Mascara I’ve been very blessed, Dan Murphy’s have taken on a new range of our drinks called High Tea, which is absolutely amazing. Ben and I have always said we want to give something back – we wanted to bring somebody in from the public to be the new face of La Mascara. We’ve actually created a web series to go along with Real Housewives where the winner will receive a one year modeling contract, as well as a cash prize from our own bank account. It’s a really positive feeling to be able to give back. What else can we expect from Jackie this season? Hearing some of the arguments, I find myself sitting there laughing… and people wonder why I drank on the show?! Apart from that though, I will say there is a lot more resolution… not just arguing for three months about the same situation. I’ve learned you can’t control people; you just have to let people be who they are, even though sometimes it can be very frustrating.
The Real Housewives of Melbourne S2 premieres Sunday Feb 22 at 8.30pm on Foxtel’s Arena Leigh Hill

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (PG)
Thanks to his momentous scientific theories and his memorable crippled appearance, most people have heard of Stephen Hawkings, even though they’re not all that sure about his theories. In 1963, Stephen Hawkings (Eddie Redmayne) was starting his PhD at Cambridge University. Diagnosed with motor neuron disease, he was given two years to live. Despite this, girlfriend Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones) marries him and supports him as he sets out to find an equation that explains everything in the universe. Based on the book by Jane Hawkings “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen Hawkings”, this is a love story, all be it a restrained British one. As Stephen’s body deteriorates, the formidable Jane makes it possible for him to continue to write. Despite some cream swirling in coffee, the audience is none the wiser about the origins of the universe but there will be laughter, tears and celebration on this extremely emotional journey.

PAPER PLANES (G)
AMERICAN SNIPER (MA)
Brothers Mark (Channing Tatum) and Dave Schultz (Mark Ruffo) won wrestling gold medals in Los Angeles and are lured to a stateof-the-art training facility owned an eccentric multi-millionaire to train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Steve Carell undergoes a complete metamorphosis to become the wealthy but deluded John ‘Eagle’ Du Pont, with his beak-like nose and bird-of-prey stare. Desperate for approval from his invalid mother (Vanessa Redgrave), John begins ‘coaching’ a wrestling team at Foxcatcher, his Pennsylvania estate. Carried by brilliant performances from all three actors, the three men show their vulnerabilities as the tensions between them increases. Winning is the redemption they seek and it is not until the final scene that the true meaning of the title is apparent. The dark psychological drama unfolds over140 minutes and the unbelievable turn of events actually happened, which makes this story even more shocking.
In a break from his previous gritty dramas, Australian director Robert Connolly has come up with a feel-good family film and admits that his 11 year old daughter helped him with the script. An 11 year old boy from the bush, Dylan (Ed Oxenbould), finds he has a knack for making paper planes. Finding inspiration from an eagle he feeds on the way to school, heends up competing in the World Paper Plane Championships in Japan. Along the way he gets closer to his WWII fighter pilot grandfather (Terry Norris) and his unemployed father (Sam Worthington) who is grieving the death of his wife in a car accident. Dylan confronts a bully, finds out about supportive friendship and navigates the positives and negatives of competitions. Despite all the technology around, kids (and adults) are still fascinated by paper planes and try to beat the 69.14m world record.
Clint Eastwood started out in films shooting baddies in 1964, playing a morally ambiguous anti-hero in a Spaghetti Western. Fifty years later, at 84, he is now on the other side of the camera directing his hero to shoot the baddies. In this case US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) is a lethal sniper, protecting US soldiers in Iraq over four tours of duty. Eastwood shows how times have changed. Eastwood, who has voiced opposition to the war in Iraq, introduces moral dilemmas early on. Kyle is on a roof when he sees a woman and a young boy through the sight of his high powered rifle. The boy has a grenade and is running towards the troops and Kyle has to make a choice. Based on actual events, this powerful film is a very personal journey on the effects of war on one man and his family

One thing the staff at the M Clinic hear on a regular basis is “You used to just be able to walk-in, what’s changed?” For starters, the M Clinic has an ever increasing number of clients, with over 3200 guys coming to the clinic and on average 50 new clients every month. The fact is more guys are walking through the M Clinic doors every month; and more guys testing means more guys needing treatments, vaccinations and so on. It is wonderful that guys in Perth have embraced testing as an integral part of their sexual health, but with M Clinic’s ever increasing number of clients, it might take longer than expected to get an appointment for testing. While the M Clinic is a great option for many gay men and men who have sex with men, and opened the doors to regular testing for many guys for their first time, it’s not the only option when it comes to testing. If you need an appointment sooner than M Clinic can provide one, it’s good to know that there are a number of other sexual health clinics available in Perth. Most GP’s can also arrange for HIV and STI (sexually transmitted infections) testing. What it does mean though if you are testing with your GP is being open and frank about your sexual health. It’s common for people to not want to open up about their sexuality and sexual practices. But without opening up the conversation a person may potential miss getting tested for something (i.e. not getting a rectal swab or throat swab for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea). If you’re not confident to start this conversation with a GP, M Clinic is able to provide a written recommendation for testing that you can hand to your GP during your consultation. If you are looking to book into a medical centre or with a GP in your area and unsure if a GP will see same sex attracted clients or do sexual health testing, there is one thing you can do. Just ask the question. If you would like more information on testing or where you can get tested for HIV and STI’s, go to itest.org.au or contact the M Clinic (for men who have sex with men) at (08) 9227 0734. Amazing Local Instagram Accounts @humansofwesternaustralia
Based from the wildly successful Humans. Street photography phenomenon Humans of New York, Human of Western Australia has photographs of, you guessed it, the people of WA. There are also quotes with fun stories and pieces of wisdom you might not otherwise find. You might see someone you know!
@mountlawleycats
This is like every other trendy street fashion Instagram except for one vital detail: the models are all cats. Nathan Jamieson made a hobby of taking photos of the cats he’d see on his way to work. Inspiration struck and we have consequently been gifted with what is possibly one of the best Instagram accounts of all time.
@queensofperth
Your local drag queen fix, all in one handy Instagram account! “I feel that Perth’s drag scene is partially unperceived and sometimes can be underestimated. We have so much incredible talent to offer and I decided that it needed to be shown off to the rest of the world.“ said founder Olivia Edwards.
