W E L C O M E Unity in Diversity In 2016, Asia Outlook looked to enter new territory as we followed the exploits of Interoil and High Arctic Energy Services; two Papua New Guinea’s economic evolution has companies looking to capitalise on culminated in a thriving business travel hub staged the resource-rich lands of Papua upon a backdrop of untouched mystery New Guinea. Less than 12 months on, and we felt there was unfinished business in the country, however, and this time we invited the cream of PNG’s crop to promote the best of a nation that is beginning to thrive as a tourist and business travel entity. The hospitality sector in particular is up there with anything the western world has to offer, and we took a stroll through the capital, Port Moresby, as well as its other nine stunning provinces to see how Papua New Guinea’s growing economy is translating into increased international traction. 2017’s hidden gem for us has so far been Myanmar, a country that we profiled in much the same way only six months ago. Attempting to emulate the rise of PNG in the years to come, we venture back to the Southeast Asian nation alongside the ICAEW to establish whether there is a wave - or just a ripple - of optimism there. Unity in Diversity is the motto of Papua New Guinea and also serves as an apt description of our showcasing section this month, as the full spectrum of industry sectors is catered for by some of the biggest household names in global business. An energetic start is provided by international water technology solutions leader, Veolia and they are backed up by two more sustainability specialists in IPT Powertech Group and Gunkul Engineering Public Company Limited. Meanwhile, on the oil & gas and offshore side of energy generation, we feature Setegap Ventures Petroleum and Northern Marine Group’s Stena Marine Far East. The latter’s recognisable branding also sets the scene for the likes of SSI Schaefer APAC and even the Salvation Army who help maintain Outlook Publishing’s recent and ongoing healthcare drive. SEED Co. Ltd and The Hearing Solution Group offer further treatment to this end. And finally, we conclude on the brightest note possible courtesy of Illuminate Lighting Design. Matthew Staff W W W. Thailand Ranks 19th in Global FDI Confidence Index Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index 2017 has been improved to 19th ranking thanks to the country’s long-term economic potential and committed support from the Thai Government, including attractive investment promotion incentives and tools. The Index indicated that investor confidence in Thailand is growing, with 21 percent of the respondents in this year’s survey said they were optimistic about Thailand’s economic outlook over the next three years. This is contributed mainly to the country’s commitment to provide pleasant environment for investors, especially in terms of regulatory improvement, political and economic stability and investment promotion. Respondents also cited the Board of Investment’s detailed plans to provide tax and non-tax incentives as major factors convincing them of long-term confidence in the country. Not to mention the Government’s clear economic and social development plan aimed at increasing national competitiveness.

TODD WONKKA:
UNDER THE RUG
sychological and satirical fiction writer, Todd Wonkka has released his first novel, Under The Rug, to Inkshares, realising an ambition that has blossomed since his teenage years. The Massachusetts-born author’s opening instalment tells an enthralling tale of Jake, whose traumatic childhood contributes to an addictive search for true loyalty in adult life; “questioning the integrity of his family, substance abuse, sex, and violence” along the way. Jake ultimately “has to make a choice that will change his life forever - acceptance or vengeance?” Throughout Todd’s life, he has travelled, found himself on the music scene, started a family, and currently works as a tennis pro in Rancho Santa Fe, California but the one unwavering draw for him has been the love of writing; listing the likes of Bukowski, Elmore Leonard, Easton-Ellis and Hunter S. Thompson among his influences. “It’s about telling a story with your guts, something that rips the page,” he emphasises as he begins work on his second novel - Tennis Monster - while Under The Rug continues to make headway on Inkshares; a crowdfunding platform set to launch Todd’s dream into mainstream consciousness.

A psychological coming of age story about a young boy’s addictive search for true loyalty Writer: Matthew Staff
Inkshares.com is an incredible platform for writers. They use the mechanics of crowdfunding to test the market for your book. You post a teaser (in my case I’ve posted the prologue and first five chapters for the audience to read), then you spread the word. If you hit your goals you get funded. You can preorder your copy/copies here. Inkshares has two publishing-goaloptions: • If you get 250 pre-orders (Quill) in three months, Inkshares will edit, print and publish it • If you get 750 pre-orders in three months, Inkshares will edit, print, distribute, publish, and give it the full marketing and promotional treatment
Pre-order your copy/copies of Under the Rug at https://www. inkshares.com/books/under-the-rug - Todd Wonkka
What’s important to remember is that authors are not able to fund their own books. At the end of the three months, assuming you’ve hit one of your goals, the book will go into production. If you get less than 250 pre-orders at the end of the three months, then everyone is refunded.

Myanmar’s Ripple of
OPTIMISM The recent lift of US economic sanctions in the Southeast Asian country is set to bring about a much needed resurgence according to the latest ICAEW report Writer: Matthew Staff

n typical Myanmar fashion, the country’s strive for more stable and sustainable economic prominence is continuing in unpredictable and bumpy style, with progress stunted if not irreparable despite some favourable contributors to its global status. April, 2016 saw the country’s first ever democratically elected Government come into power, representing a potential turn in the tide for a country which had only offered the rest of the world a sneak peek into its workings a few years previously. The event - a successful one at that - was supposed to usher in a new dawn of national prosperity; if not immediately, then certainly progressively and notably. Such a drastic change in structure isn’t always positive though, and the shock alone seemed to have a detrimental effect, translating into a period of disappointing growth between the election and March, 2017. Exports, even in established agricultural and commodity markets, struggled to make any headway and trade was also a cause for concern with exported goods in the first half of 2016 declining by a catastrophic 11.6 percent. Imports, in turn, also declined over the same period - by 6.7 percent to compound the overall struggle to make inroads internationally; inevitably leading to a stall on the FDI front as well. “...foreign investments stalled, largely due to the confusion associated with the authority to approve them,” the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) explains in its quarterly forecast; The ICAEW Economic Insight: South East Asia. “The Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC), the official body responsible for approving

investments, was disbanded in March, 2016, leading to a backlog of investment proposals.”
Regaining some ground
All is not lost, however. As the post-election buzz begins to subside and a new normal erases the memory of previous economic and political infrastructures, a host of accompanying positives are also helping to bring a period of positivity back to the most emerging of emerging markets. Improved construction activity in Yangon has been attributed by the ICAEW report as being one of the key factors, complemented by a significant lifting of US economic sanctions on the country which has been in place for 20 years. The country’s inclusion in the Generalised System Preferences programme has coincided with a concerted resurgence in foreign direct investment, which the ICAEW believes will take on even more prevalence once the MIC “returns to full swing”.

‘Improved construction activity in Yangon has been attributed by the ICAEW report as being one of the key factors, complemented by a significant lifting of US economic sanctions on the country which has been in place for 20 years’
“Meanwhile, after months of steadily depreciating, the kyat finally regained some ground against the US dollar in the first half of 2016, before losing part of those gains during Q3,” the report continues. “Although inflation was in double-digits in the first half of 2016, inflationary pressures have now begun to ease (inflation finally fell below 10 percent in July and eased to 6.3 percent in August). We expect inflation to average 9.6 percent in 2016 and 8.1 percent in 2017.”
Positivity remains tentative
Acting as either solace or even further concern for Myanmar at present, is that it’s not alone in its struggles, and that uncertainty is not a trait specific to the emerging nation. The ICAEW highlights that the whole of Southeast Asia faces an unpredictable year ahead in 2017 despite exports continuing to recover and the likes of Singapore and the Philippines enjoying improved quarters of late compared to a year previously.
E
C
O
“The year has started on a positive note, with both the US and China displaying steady growth momentum, as Asian exports continue to recover,” the report notes. “Going forward, we expect a resurgent US and resilient China to prop up global economic growth and global trade in 2017. On the face of it, this bodes well for Asia; especially East Asia, or ‘factory Asia’, which relies more on trade as a driver of growth. “[However], the anticipated rise in US interest rates and the appreciation of the US dollar are expected to keep Asian FX markets under pressure this year, possibly leading to a tightening of monetary conditions and capital outflows. This is likely to have a greater impact on the Asian economies with typical emerging market characteristics, such as current account deficit and/or a high proportion of foreign bond holdings (like Malaysia, Indonesia).” These factors are likely to constrain any hope of a dramatic upturn for Asian trade, even if it isn’t “derailed” altogether.

“The expected pace of export growth in 2017 will be well below Asia’s long-term average export growth of around seven percent,” the report adds. “Also, the contribution of net exports to growth will probably fall slightly in 2017, because we expect import growth to outpace export growth, amid a

rise in domestic demand. The bulk of growth in Asia will be generated by domestic demand this year, similar to the trend visible since 2011.” For Myanmar, a country so intent on boosting its profile on the international stage, this won’t exactly be music to its ears, but in terms of playing the long game, an instant role as a regional headline act was never really on the cards. Potentially lower oil prices, Chinese economy repair works and a vulnerability to natural disasters will ensure that any positivity remains tentative at best for the remainder of 2017, but with a 12-principle Governmental action plan now laid out with an emphasis on transparency, financial management and competitiveness, there is at least a ripple, if not a wave of optimism for the country’s long-term outlook. Social Media’s New Approach Steve Wickham delves into the reasons why social media could be the key to unlocking the shackles of Asia’s factory workers Written by: Steve Wickham, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Matrix

etailers have struggled to get to grips with handling the issue of slavery in supply chains, which can take many forms, be that from Nestlé to Sports Direct; a large proportion of business owners don’t know the half of what happens on the shop floors, let alone in the supply chain. The allegations of slavery that get brought to the fore always appear to be just as much a shock to those running a business as it is to the public. Most slavery scandals appear to stem from a dangerous lack of knowledge about the factories that are producing these consumer goods, and more importantly little communication with the factory workers on a micro level. The factories are often continents away from the actual point of sale, meaning it’s out of sight and out of mind for many brand decision makers; companies will collect 100 percent ethical compliancy audits and

that appears to be enough. It has to be said that ignorance is not necessary bliss; production tends to get outsourced to countries with labour in factories across Asia and numbers sometimes get tweaked by factory bosses faced with unrealistic compliancy targets - not to mention the fact that paper surveys completed by workers can be tiresome to collate and prone to errors. Overall, gaining both honest and open feedback from factory workers can be a gruelling task, especially when working norms and cultural practices differ from region to region. Perhaps not so surprisingly, a recent CIPS survey found that many supply chain managers are unaware of the Modern Slavery Act’s existence, a new law requiring large UK businesses to report efforts to address risks of slavery and human trafficking. It is therefore a testament to the fact that little progress has been made in this area over the years.

With the emergence of tech and digital companies can no longer rest on their laurels, social media is a democratising tool used by people the world over to make communication easier. It was a device created to bridge the geographical gap between people, allowing them to communicate in the very instance that they have something to say. In addition to that, Matrix has worked tirelessly with big retailers and NGOs in order to create a social media solution with transparency kept at the heart. MatrixChat is a website and communication service which uses WeChat - China’s biggest messaging service - which will help give factory workers a voice. The site allows workers to keep in touch with their bosses and partnering businesses, providing a balance for them to share thoughts about their working conditions and keep across regulations and compliancy objectives in real-time. Matrix’s partner factories are based in China, with 80 percent of workers using WeChat to communicate with personal networks, therefore it made complete sense to use it as a platform from which to engage in a work context.

Other brands have been using the platform for sales and marketing, but not yet to access worker feedback. WeChat can be used as a home for mini sites for workers’ use, and via the mini site MatrixChat, workers can post their concerns and log everything from quality of life and satisfaction statistics, to making workplace requests for small things like communal wifi. The transparent communication can then be shared with factory managers to help them hear workers’ voices and understand how they can improve their lives to ensure they feel better at work and are able to do a better job in the long run.
Informed and aware
As a worker tool, MatrixChat will also serve as a hub for learning, news and a product gallery which provides workers with the chance to learn about everything from relevant regulation changes, to seeing images of the projects they helped to create

on the shop floor. This will help to communicate the impact of their work and in turn, could create a higher sense of self-respect and job satisfaction. We’ve also taken steps to help migrant workers settle in and feel secure in their day-to-day lives through future partnerships with local NGOs and institutions. Together, we are able to offer support and advice via WeChat on worker welfare issues and emotional subjects such as remote parenting for migrant parents. While the Company is still a way off ending slavery worldwide, ethical and social programmes that are offered on messaging platforms hold the potential to revolutionise engagement with factory workers. This enhanced ability to communicate with all parties involved can only be a good thing in the long run. It is hoped that open communication and wider access to information will inspire and motivate workers, while consumer goods brands that make the necessary improvements to their supply chains stand to gain from the increased productivity of a happier and stable workforce.

Protecting Oil for the Future Fluctuations in the oil & gas industry are forcing traders to keep oil in Asian storage, ready for a later sale in a more promising market Writer: Phoebe Calver

he oil industry is renowned for its price fluctuations however, a recent 10 percent decline in oil prices appears to be pushing traders to retain crude oil in storage, with the aim of selling further down the line when prices return to normal. However, those actions will undermine the impact of supply cuts that were led by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which partly aimed to guide the traders that were holding onto oil in storage to sell stock and reduce the bloated inventories that have previously sapped global prices. It is predicted that in approximately six months, Brent crude futures for delivery will be sitting around $1.50 per barrel above the current price, subsequently making it far more profitable for companies to store their oil, going against OPECs aims. Current shipping data is clearly highlighting the fact that at least 15 super-tankers are sat in Southeast Asia’s Strait of Malacca and the Singapore Strait, filled to the brim with unsold fuel. Although that is marginally less than in previous months, it is predicted that those numbers will begin to creep up again as we move through the year. If this price decline continues, it is increasingly possible that the amount of tankers used for storage of crude oil will rise back up to levels seen earlier this year.
High-level supply
Oil shipments at present remain high and due to that the supply glut in the region has been stoked; industry trade data demonstrates that 21.5 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil has been brought into Asia via tankers in May alone. Now while that is slightly down from the peak numbers seen in February, it is similar to the levels seen in late 2016, before the production cuts

were announced at the OPEC summit. Due to the complexities in the industry, up to this point OPEC has shied away from making any significant supply cuts to its biggest customers, the majority of which are located in Asia. This has been supported by the fact that other producers, particularly located in the United States have stepped up their exports, subsequently further stoking the glut. In Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s leader is pushing to cut crude oil allocations for Asia by a massive 300,000 bpd, up to this point in time many Asian refiners have not had to experience any cuts,

receiving all of their allocations of crude oil. Looking forward, analysts are predicting that storage levels will be a key determining factor in the health of the oil market and therefore it is something that will be under increasing scrutiny over the coming months.
Global market share
One of the main concerns for Asia was whether OPEC’s planned industry cuts would mean the continent would end up needing to go hunting for crude oil supplies to maintain its current oil needs. The dedication to make cuts comes from the extremely strong will of OPEC as well as the impacted non-OPEC producers

who have been forced into tightening their overall supply demand. In order for Asia to ensure that it meets its crude supplies, it has to closely monitor OPEC’s production cuts throughout the year to ensure it stays ahead of any changes. At presents, the cuts that OPEC began to make have not impacted Asia, which is of course home to three of the four biggest oil consumers on the globe. Currently exporters are keen to maintain a high global market share, cutting their shipments to marginal buyers and therefore inventories that they posses which are located in the big consumer markets have remained

extremely bloated and forced low prices that we are now seeing. Although the industry is being cautious at present, very few refiners are actually expecting to see a vast crude shortage, which is largely due to the copious alternative supplies available in the market. Looking forward, if a shortage was to become a real issue for Asia, there are key alternative sources available, predominantly located in the US and largely due to the shale oil supplies located there. These producers have quickly leapt to fill the gap left by OPEC’s actions and will be able to offer support moving forward if it is required.

or hundreds of years, the concept of Papua New Guinea becoming a tourism hotspot, let alone a hotbed for international business travellers, was unthinkable, but while large parts of the country retain rituals and traditions oft-associated with centuries of old, pockets of the multi-island nation are becoming some of the most exotic and exciting places to visit. Driven by its motto, ‘unity in diversity’ it is this diversification into the modern day which has helped to kick-start more concerted realms of economic prevalence and tourism prowess; and for the lucky few who

Epitomised by the growth of its capital, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea is one of the most culturally enigmatic countries in the world, boasting 852 languages across its more than seven million people. However, it is the country’s mystery and intrigue which have largely put it on the map, with massive parts still untouched by civilisation or even explored fully. ‘Uncontacted peoples’ and innumerable species of animal are still predicted to inhabit one of the most untouched areas of the planet.

Papua New Guinea Even the name itself - Papua derives from an old term of uncertain origin or meaning, an indictment of a country that has so much to offer, yet very little of it shouted about. “Lying just south of the equator, 160 kilometres north of Australia, Papua New Guinea is part of a great arc of mountains stretching from Asia, through Indonesia and into the South Pacific. With a vibrant and colourful Papua New Guinea culture, more than 600 islands and 800 indigenous languages, PNG is made up of four regions with 20 provinces,” explains Papua New Guinea Travel on its website. “Papua New Guinea is full of interesting attractions, magnificent
natural scenery, and diverse cultural heritage. “Spend your Papua New Guinea holiday trekking remote jungle tracks, cruising the mighty Sepik river, surfing the waves of New Ireland, fishing around the fjords of Tufi, birdwatching our world-famous birds of paradise in the Highlands, or diving amongst the coral reef coastline.” More than 820 different languages inevitably makes any visit you do have to PNG all the more challenging or exciting depending on your taste for the indigenous, but across each of the country’s four regions, business is expanding, and the business travel community is growing.

And as long as you remember their own customs - embracing friendly handshakes and greetings, but never making eye contact - then visitors can quickly turn their attentions towards enjoying the islands and indeed their business activities. And from this business perspective, the outlook for PNG is bright. Despite being considered for LEDC status as little as 11 years ago, the International Monetary Fund has since described the

country’s economy as “buoyant” and “stable”, with it now being earmarked as a developing entity: the sixth fastest in the world in 2011, in fact. “Mining remains a major economic factor,” Wikipedia notes. “Local and national governments are discussing the potential of resuming mining operations in Panguna mine in Bougainville Province, which has been closed since the civil war in the 1980s-1990s.” Endowed with a rich plethora of natural resources and mining opportunities, it comes as no surprise that the majority of business travellers

The Business End come from this international mining domain. Meanwhile, for the more humble areas of society, agriculture and farming also remain pivotal to the country’s sustainability. “Local developers are handicapped by years of deficient investment in education, health, ICT and access to finance,” Wikipedia continues. “Agriculture, for subsistence and cash crops, provides a livelihood for 85 percent of the population and continues to provide some 30 percent of GDP. “Mineral deposits, including gold, oil, and copper, account for 72 percent of export earnings. Oil palm production has grown steadily over recent years (largely from estates and with extensive outgrower output), with palm oil now the main agricultural export. “In households participating, coffee remains the major export crop (produced largely in the Highlands provinces), followed by cocoa and coconut oil/copra from
the coastal areas, each largely produced by smallholders and tea, produced on estates and rubber.” Underpinning this - once again diverse array of fiscal contributors is the PNG Government’s long-term Vision 2050 which emphasises the need for further strings to the country’s economic bow. Wanting to avoid the backlash that regions such as West Africa have endured to their own resource-rich booms, the necessity to spread the risk in the future will not only make the country’s economy more sustainable, but it will also lend itself more wholly to the business travel sector too. Wikipedia adds: “Measures have been taken to mitigate these effects, including through the establishment of a sovereign wealth fund, partly to stabilise revenue and expenditure flows, but much will depend upon the readiness to make real reforms to effective use of revenue, tackling rampant corruption and empowering households and businesses to access markets, services and develop a more buoyant economy, with lower costs, especially for small-to-medium-size enterprises.”

Transport Links
PNG is the perfect place to explore for those seeking adventure
A S T H E C O U N T R Y ’ S tourist infrastructure continues to improve, the routes and methods to enter the nation do too. Most foreign nationals who now wish to enter Papua New Guinea are required to obtain a visa, but many can do so, for free, for a six month period. Most EU countries, South America and Oceania are included within this ruling, while there are of course opportunities to obtain visas at a PNG embassy for many other countries. Once the logistics have been arranged and the necessary jabs have been completed, transport becomes all the more complex however. That’s not to say complex in a bad way, mind you. Anyone who truly wants to explore PNG to the full are presumably looking for a little adventure in any case, and with the country’s tricky, undulating,
44
mountainous terrain, adventure is just what you’ll get. Bypassing mountains entirely, air travel is the most popular and important - mode of transport for both personnel and freight and even the two major cities - Port Moresby and Lae - can only be bridged via the skies. Located near the former, Jacksons International Airport provides the primary hub for travelling into the country, which you can do so via Air Niugini, Philippine Airlines, Qantas or Virgin Australia. Once in and settled though, there are choices to be made as to the best way to explore the islands. Land, air and sea are all viable options, although the former of the three is quite specific to the Highlands Highway which begins in Lae and connects to Mt Hagen, the coast and Madang. From there, the roads do fork
WWW.ASIAOUTLOOKMAG.COM
and continue, but for all the effort that goes into plotting your route, it may be simpler to either take to the skies, or at least look to public transport to carry the burden for you. PMVs (public motor vehicles) and busses are the most common way to travel for locals, but to make sure, it is strongly advisable to gain advice from your hotel or lodge staff as to the best strategy. On the water, numerous ferries are available to interconnect the various port towns and this is still a credible choice, but as has always been the way in PNG, it’s usually advisable to travel as the crow flies. Nearly all major settlements are built around an airstrip and - to be honest - missing out on the views that can be encapsulated from soaring above the country’s terrain would be to not get the full PNG experience.

The Kokoda Trail and Sogeri area have a history of bitter fighting between Australian and Japanese armies during the early days of the war in the Pacific in World War II. The 96 km Kokoda trail passes through rugged mountainous country of rainforest, jungles of fern, orchids, birds and clean mountain streams which tumble into steep valleys. The unspoilt villages throughout the Kokoda Track will welcome you and the Koiari and Orokaiva people will greet you with smiles and tempt you with seasonal fruit and vegetables.” - Kokoda Trekking
Louisiade Archipelago
“The Louisiade Archipelago is a string of coral islands that trail off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea out into the Solomon Sea. Most of these islands are populated by Papua New Guinean natives who are typically Englishspeaking, educated, and friendly. They lead a classic idyllic tropical island lifestyle, living in coconut palm thatched single room houses built on stilts or ground supports. They live at a near subsistence level.” - Asia Pacific Boating

“According to legend, the Lake Kutubu was formed when a fig tree was cut down by a woman looking for water. The story goes that whatever the tree touched turned to water - hence the lake. Today it’s oil that’s causing a ripple in this previously remote area. The establishment of oilfields near Lake Kutubu has recently caused social and economic upheaval, including an influx of itinerants in search of work… It is also possible to trek to Wasi Falls from Lake Kutubu via an overnight stop in the Foimeana village of Kantobo. Resourcing the
World With more than 350 different technologies to boast, Veolia is replicating its global success in Asia courtesy of a flexibility and legacy that is now renowned within the industry Writer: Matthew Staff | Project Manager: Matt Cole-Wilkin eolia’s influence in Asia is thriving off the back of its global leadership position in the resource management domain, and is looking to translate this status into even more concerted solutions combating some of the most pressing water challenges in the world. With a long legacy in environmental sustainability - 160 years to be exact the wider Group has etched its name into the sector’s upper echelons over the decades virtue of its 350 different technologies, unparalleled aftersales capabilities, its operation and maintenance support, and of course its geographical reach. Subsequently reputed as one of the world’s leading providers of water treatment solutions, Veolia’s influence in Asia specifically has evolved over the past 30 years to demonstrate this prowess as extensively as possible. “One of our key success factors lies in the flexibility of our solutions, as Veolia’s portfolio can be applied
across various markets in the region,” Carlo Patteri, Business Development Director, Projects, South East Asia Industrial, Veolia Water Technologies, emphasises to this end. “This flexibility has enabled manufacturers from various vertical markets to enjoy the advantages of Veolia’s advanced water and wastewater technologies.” In Asia, much as in the rest of the world, Veolia provides its clients with the full scope of water technologies capable of treating process water and tackling wastewater challenges, as well as business monitoring tools to conduct water audits. Patteri picks up: “Some of these solutions have very specific applications while others fit a broad range of markets. For instance, the Whittier Filtration and Separations product range is a series of heavy-duty equipment designed to meet the stringent standards of the hydrocarbon and chemical processing industries. On the other hand, our well-known Biothane Anaerobic Technologies and

Resourcing the world
From a wastewater perspective, Veolia Water Technologies’ footprint, robustness and efficiency brings added value as well as quick responsiveness to client requirements and market challenges; something which Patteri attributes as one of the Company’s most vital differentiators. “Our strength lies in our ability to bring together a wide range of water and wastewater technologies, and to customise solutions according to local conditions,” he says. “This enables us to address specific advanced needs such as water reuse, high efficiency energy recovery, and large-scale firsttime infrastructure requirements. “Regardless of the size of the project, we believe in recommending

the most ideal set of technologies for each of our clients.” To facilitate this, Veolia will continue to invest in its R&D operations to further expand its current portfolio of solutions moving forward; to better support the Asian water market. With water scarcity threats becoming prominent in Asia-Pacific, there is an opportunity for Veolia as manufacturers will be more inclined to consider moving towards water conservation and adoption of reuse technologies, such as water harvesting and recycling to improve their water footprint. Patteri adds: “As we standardise our solutions to ensure that our clients can consistently achieve high performance anywhere in the world, we hope the process will help our key accounts like Danone as the client continues to expand their operations in new markets. “Veolia hopes to penetrate new markets as well, and we look forward

Patteri concludes: “In the next five years, Veolia hopes to continue to contribute to a world in transformation. Already today, 700 million people in 43 countries live in water scarce regions, and it is expected that 1.8 billion people will be living in regions with absolute water scarcity by 2025. “We know water, and this has enabled Veolia to build its expertise over the years to cover the full range of the water cycle, which is a key differentiator that will address the above challenges and set us apart from our competitors in the future.”

Servicing long-term contracts is a key factor in the success of the Company
We have seen in some instances, MNOs that are not planning to divest their towers however are looking to divest their power equipment. In those instances, with the pressure coming from the global profitability of the MNOs, we are providing the T-ESCO model whereby all investment to modernise power solutions and making them efficient and deliver the required availability are provided by IPT PowerTech Group. Naturally, servicing a long-term contract for the same is a key factor for its success. On the other hand, we have noticed that towercos have access to investment resources and strategic directions whereby they invest themselves through innovative and energy efficient power solutions; however, they need the deliverables to be met and the promise of those solutions to be achieved which is reflected in our guaranteed savings model.

he global economy proved to be particularly difficult place for businesses throughout 2016, providing a year of uncertainty to many companies in the industry; Gunkul Engineering Public Company Limited became an exception to this rule, continuing to successfully generate the required operating results. Currently, there is well-founded expectation that Thailand’s economy will have a much improved growth trajectory in the latter part of 2017, supported by the stability of the country’s political situation. Of course, these predictions for stability can only mean good things for Gunkul, enabling the Company to continue successfully driving forward within the industry - setting the standard for the industry. It is predicted that ASEAN economies will also expand more than previous years, in order to focus on expansion and maximise the potential that can come from it, Gunkul is adjusting its business strategy by focusing on investment and increased production in overseas countries. “We have successfully generated revenue - even throughout the difficult economic situation for both the Company and our subsidiaries,” explains Sopacha Dhumrongpiyawut, Chief Executive Officer at Gunkul Engineering. “This revenue came from the distribution of electricity in our commercial project Solar Rang Ngern, which actually began at the beginning of 2016, alongside the distribution of electric commercial wind power plants.”
Adjusting to new agreements
Presently the revenues from construction services have decreased, due simply to the distribution of supply equipment for electrical systems to the power plants, the cooperative solar project and the government. Due to newly signed agreements by the

Dhumrongpiyawut continues: “As a company we had to make some major adjustments in other areas to compensate and be able to move forward, particularly our strategy of investing in renewable energy to overseas companies, especially in Japan.” Through these adjustments to its working strategy, 2016 saw Gunkul achieving the agreement of beginning an additional two projects, which cumulatively provided a total production capacity of over 140 megawatts (MW); a factor that will inevitably create more chances for the Company. “It is exciting for us to also be able to work on power plants that have

After a difficult year for the industry as a whole, the operational performance at Gunkul has been given priority of the Company’s main focus, alongside joining the network of private practice alignment Thailand - the private sector collective action coalition against corruption - keeping on top of whistle blowing policy and business ethics in the market it works in. “Every member of the team working at Gunkul has been made aware of the aforementioned practices, keeping us at the top of our game in both business and ethics, while supporting the stable foundation of trust that we have worked hard to build,” affirms Dhumrongpiyawut. “The transparency that we provide for our shareholders builds confidence for them in our ability, alongside customers and business partners of the Company both now and in the future.” The Company has come a long way as a business and with its ethical development alongside the country, since it was founded in 1982 as an electrical equipment trader. It experienced a great amount of expansion over the years before entering into renewable energy EPC business in 2009, doing so by achieving the supply and set-up of the first wind turbine in Thailand to EGAT. “Since 2010, we have grown exponentially into a strong renewable energy power production business in Thailand and across other Asian countries,” adds Dhumrongpiyawut. “Our renewable energy business has come a long way and we work on the basis that our business is carried out with a focus on social and environmental needs.”

ith its operating base located in Hong Kong, ASB Biodiesel’s factory has the capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes of low-carbon transport fuel a year, a huge amount that is enough to fuel every diesel engine running on the City’s roads. The Company has worked tirelessly with the aim of offsetting some of the greenhouse gas emissions produced by Hong’s transport sector; and presently the Company has managed to offset 257,000 tonnes which equates to 3.6 percent of the total amount. ASB Biodiesel has differentiated itself from other biodiesel production plants in the industry, with its facilities able to process multiple feedstocks, some of which include cooking oil and grease-trap oil. “Our fuel meets the EN 14214 standard of the European Committee for Standardisation,” explains the Company on its website. “We are incredibly proud of ASB Biodiesel and the product we produce, making a clean, low-carbon transport fuel that can be used as a substitute for fossil diesel, or alternatively blended with fossil diesel without requiring modification of diesel engines.”

Around 90 percent of the global biodiesel produced is based on edible oils gained from crops such as rapeseed, soy and palm, however, at times this can be slightly controversial as it can compete with food production and subsequently may then contribute to rising food prices. “This is where we are excelling in the industry and setting ourselves apart as ASB Biodiesel’s produce is produced from waste,” affirms the Company. “We then do not cause any land use changes and produce significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions from the avoidance of upstream carbon emissions that go hand-in-hand with seed oil extraction and crop production.”
Better air quality
The actual biodiesel product produced by the Company is made from the

triglycerides taken from vegetable oils and animal fats - achieved through a chemical process known as transesterification - and these feedstocks are then combined to create biodiesel along with byproducts such as bio-heating oil, glycerine and fertiliser. “The by-product bio-heating oil is a particularly heavy fraction coming from the distillation of biodiesel,” the Company adds. “We are able to successfully use this product in our own plant as a form of heating.” Of course biodiesel has the predominant advantage of significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions, however, there are many reasons why its production has advantages over petroleum-based diesel; although the reduction is dependent on the type of feedstock used, with ASB’s main feedstock being cooking oil and other waste oils. “The Biodiesel is proving to be a big player in contributing to better air

Due to a multitude of reasons, particularly focusing around the roadside pollution emerging from motor vehicles and high regional emissions, Hong Kong has stopped short of reaching its current Air Quality Objectives (AQOs). “Our AQOs were set out back in 1987 as part of Hong Kong’s Air Pollution Control Ordinance, and while our Government has since set a new set of Air Quality Objectives,” continues the Company. “Meeting them involves huge measures being put in place and we believe in the coming years we will

see Biodiesel offering a helping hand to Hong Kong in meeting air quality aspirations.” As previously mentioned, ASB Biodiesel has been successful in meeting the EU’s EN 14214 standard, due to its successful biodiesel blends. At present Hong Kong as a whole maintains the standards for biodiesel that can be used in vehicles - set out in the Air Pollution Control Regulation - and it is due largely to the work of companies such as ASB Biodiesel and the work happening there. The Company adds: “We are very aware that the potential for emission reduction in Hong Kong is still unrealised, with the use of biodiesel in Hong Kong being voluntary unlike many European and Asian countries, meaning we are in for a particularly exciting few years in the industry.”

seen in most European countries and Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, the development of the domestic biodiesel markets is growing at a rapid rate. This has subsequently reduced the dependence on fossil fuels and cuts down the emissions of greenhouse gases and roadside pollutants, and the mandatory blending will often comprise a blend of between five and 20 percent.
S
The Company describes: “It has predominantly been recommended to us and similar companies, that we follow Hong Kong’s Climate Change Strategy and Action Agenda set out in 2010, which suggests the adoption of a 10 percent blend.” Of course Hong Kong has the ability to mandate blending at any time, however, as the biodiesel companies operating there are already achieving great success with a 10 percent blend. It is also important to take into account ASB’s capacity to fuel every diesel engine operating in Hong Kong currently. “We are lucky to be operating in a place in which the warranties of most major automobile and engine manufacturers are already supporting the use of a five percent blend and above,” concludes the Company. “Presently we have a lot of scope and support to work with and looking forward it seems this support will only expand with our project development.”

ver the years, Illuminate Lighting Design has been extremely fortunate to share projects with innovative developers, architects and designers who are renowned in the industry for pushing boundaries; working with such visionaries in the industry has always pushed Illuminate to evolve as project demands increase. Through constantly educating itself and staying relevant in the industry via the crosspollination of ideas that emerge from work with manufacturers, trade shows, clients and designers, the Company is retaining its place at the top of the industry. “Explaining the design process for lighting is particularly difficult to clarify to clients,” explains Simon Berry, Partner at Illuminate Lighting Design. “During our concept phase, we have to use the latest up-to-date techniques to portray our idea and intent - it is critical and the first time the client will see something visually engaging towards the project.” The Company has grown through incredible technological advancements in the industry, at the time Berry started Illuminate, the creative process involved tracing and expressing the lighting using a yellow highlighting pen; now various software is used with the ability represent the lighting throughout the different times of the day. “These advancements haven’t altered our philosophies in any way and I have always believed that first we have to listen before we can understand the needs,” explains Berry. “We remain respectful of the original design at all times and work in a collaborative team structure. “I began Illuminate in 2009 in Singapore predominantly focusing on hospitality projects and interiors in the region - since that point the Company has grown exponentially; to date we have eight studios with the latest addition in Jakarta, Indonesia.”

Revolutionising the Concept of Lighting F
or more than half a century Lutron Electronics has lit up countless projects worldwide including those in Singapore, unveiling its numerous inventions to revolutionise the concept of lighting control. Growing from just two products to now offer more than 15,000 control products, from individual dimmer and automated window shades and light management systems, the business has also become renowned for a number of industry firsts. Developing the world’s first drapery system with vertical movement - Kirbé - the Company’s philosophy has helped to make a winning difference based on strategic, systemic and measurable advancements. “We have grown exponentially over the years to become a truly global Company,” Lutron Sales Director, SE Asia Seng Boon Liang continues. “Lutron is a technology-centred and people-driven Company. Our success is a result of our strong guiding principles, developed by our founder, Joel Spira.” Driving each and every innovation are five core principles, encompassing customer care, internal company care, personability, high quality products and value for money. Seng elaborates on the latter: “We believe that our customers benefit the most from products that are high quality and cost effective. No matter how big the system, every Lutron product saves energy by reducing electrical consumption. Taken as a whole, Lutron light controls have reduced our customers’ electric bills by $1 billion annually in US alone.
Prestigious projects Such modern day prominence represents the culmination of a journey that began in the 1950s in Spira’s makeshift lab in New York as a young, fascinated physicist. Numerous groundbreaking inventions later, Lutron’s rotary electronic dimmers quickly became the new norm in the market, but Spira never settled and continued to buck lighting trends via unrivalled innovation; one example being GRAFIK Eye® which was the world’s first preset lighting control system and could preprogram different light levels for each circuit and orchestrate all lighting fixtures to provide the best lighting environment for different activities. And as each new product took off, so too did Lutron’s appeal in the global construction domain, and it wasn’t long before a plethora of significant projects called upon the Company’s skill-sets. “Marina Bay Sands in Singapore is one of our most prestigious projects in Asia,” Seng explains. “The project involved customised fixtures in combination with intelligent control systems to help create a lighting atmosphere that is now considered a symbol of ultimate luxury.” World-class restaurants, stunning casinos and vast convention centres represent just a few more of the key contracts Lutron has attained in the intervening years as well as the Empire State Building (ESB) where the Company was asked to demonstrate how technology can help a historical building go green. Seng details: “ESB’s overarching goal was to reduce energy use by more than 38 percent when compared to a building that meets ASHRAE 90.1 code. By reducing lighting electricity use up to 65 percent, Lutron light controls go a long way in helping ESB meet their efficiency goals.
The Four Seasons in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the Andaz Hyatt in Singapore, Rosewood Bangkok, Ritz Carlton Galaxy in Macau and Radisson Blu in Hangzhou offer just a slight glimpse into the myriad projects compounding Lutron’s success at present, as the Company continues to showcase its flexibility, sustainability and cost efficiency to the world elite. Sustained innovation Compounding the Company’s own internal sustainability, Lutron is committed to investing in the brightest minds to help push the business forward further still in the future; offering each employee the opportunity to accept new challenges, pursue their strengths and expand their horizons. “We are also constantly striving to educate industry professionals about the benefits of lighting control so they have the tools to determine the best solution for every customer and every space,” Seng notes. “Our focus on sustained innovation is what helps us stand apart. Lutron owns more than 2700 patents and manufactures more than 15,000 products, but our product design starts with the customers, not the engineers.
“Our products are designed with functional, aesthetic, ergonomic and cognitive considerations in mind. The result is intuitive and timeless products.” Sustainability is not a fancy concept but a way of life for Lutron, and each year the Company saves more than nine billion kWh of energy, equivalent to: more than $1 billion in costs; 2,000 windmills’ production in a year; and the CO2 of two million acres of trees in a year. “This is enough energy to light 4.5 million homes for one whole year,” Seng concludes. “For more than 55 years, Lutron has set the standard for innovation, quality and service. “[In the future] Lutron will remain a pioneer, and lead the development of light controls in the industry. Energy saving and energy efficiency will continue to be our key focus and we will come up with hardware and software which will make saving energy more easy and effective while improving the ROI of lighting control equipment.”

reon is an international organisation producing architectural interior lighting products (tools of light) and complete metal ceiling solutions (ceiling solutions) for high end interiors since 1982. In January 2016 Kreon acquired Swiss based manufacturer Belux, offering lighting solutions that are convincing not only with regard to their functional qualities and technical sophistication, but also due to their attractive appearance. The basis for Kreon’s design is a very clear characteristic visualisation of our philosophy: purity and simplicity. Wherever possible we refer to pure three-dimensional architectural shapes. Kreon offers timeless lighting concepts, designed to form an integral part of modern day architecture . The collection includes an array of downlights, uplights and sidelights which disappear into ceilings, floors and walls harmoniously. We always respect the recessed position of the lamp source, creating an emotional feeling of light and preventing an uncomfortable glare situation.
Illuminate is highly experienced in large-scale lighting design
In part this growth is a reflection of the increase in popularity and awareness of lighting design, however it also comes down to experience on large-scale projects with design. For Illuminate, it is ever increasingly not about the amount of light fixtures the Company can fit to a ceiling, but instead finding ways to seamlessly design lighting that integrates with the surroundings - using the best possible design to tell a cohesive story.
Growth potential
As a relatively young Company, Illuminate still has a lot of growth potential in terms of both the size of the Company and the projects that it works on. “Historically, we tend to design for luxury hospitality projects, however, we have actually began to branch out to light-up mixed developments,” continues Berry. “These include resorts, Islands, residential and office projects,

Company evolution
Fast forward 40 years, the late 2000’s saw one of KBSA ‘s subsidiaries - Kimbe Shipping & Transport Ltd - merge with Steamships Trading Co., forming the joint venture Company - New Britain Shipping Ltd - which currently handles port services, transport and logistics. Despite big developments within the Company, such as the aforementioned merger, KBSA remains a 100 percent Papua New Guinea (PNG) owned, family-run company. underway to develop an extensive delivery network.” Another exciting project currently being undertaken is hoped to address a major challenge currently posed to companies doing business in PNG, of inconsistent supply of electricity; it had become one of the largest expenses for the Company with the constant upkeep and usage of a generator supply. O’Hanlon affirms: “In order to solve this issue, we have recently completed a feasibility study to go green, utilising a significant investment into producing solar electricity for our newly built Hardware and Homecentre, with the exciting potential to roll-out solar energy across other commercial and residential sites.” Alongside the exciting infrastructural developments, KBSA is entering phase two of building an industrial complex, with plans underway to develop a modern state-of-the-art commercial

office block; all new developments are being constructed in order to cater for Kimbe’s growing rental market, adding to KBSA’s property portfolio. “As well as our larger scale projects, the expansion and renovations of the existing Hardware and newly built Homecentre was completed in 2016,” O’Hanlon expands. “Excitingly we also have further expansions and refurbishments planned in other areas of the business, including the automotive sales and service centre and our supermarket and department store in the heart of Kimbe Town.” The company’s investments are not only confined to West New Britain – with exciting ventures currently taking place in Australia and China - being strategic locations, in close proximity to agents and suppliers in a move to expand into further markets.
Excelling in facility development
In a family-run company such as KBSA, it is important to hire longterm and experienced staff, with a large proportion of the current employee base having been with the Company for many years - adding both experience and enhancing knowledge within the team. “We pride ourselves on providing on-the-job training for students from our local technical colleges, in the fields of carpentry, electrical, automechanic and auto-electrical,” affirms O’Hanlon. “Currently the Company is very lucky to have particularly experienced staff from PNG, Australia, South Africa and the Philippines, and are currently in the process of hiring more managers in order to expand various areas of the business.” It has to be said that PNG can prove to be a difficult workplace, with security concerns being paramount and the work-life balance proving to be an ever-increasingly important aspect to aid the Company in attracting and retaining key staff. O’Hanlon adds: “As we are fortunate

to live in the tropics we have an abundance of opportunities to strike this work-life balance, with access to excellent diving, fishing, golf and social clubs, we have found this encourages our employees in participation of local sport clubs and social events that are held by the community.” Similarly, the Company’s approach to procurement is very much sticking with the basis of ‘doing it themselves’, having developed excellent facilities in order to procure and consolidate containers in Australia and China KBSA’s two largest import markets. “Our Operational efficiencies stem from our in-house ordering team, we have long-term strong relationships with our suppliers with that have set up lucrative national agency lines within the automotive, hardware, and retail industries,” O’Hanlon elaborates.” For our local procurement we also work with major suppliers in

uci Pte Ltd has excelled over the years in its ability to develop products to be used as both technical and specifically functional products, becoming particularly prevalent in its ability to keep up-to-date with significant industry trends, while also keeping abreast of the needs of its customers. The Company has tapped into many markets, excelling in architectural and interior lighting; however, it is also successfully moving into the challenge of functional lighting. Luci has a well established and unique background that is firmly cemented in Japan’s lighting industry, and looks set to be there for many years to come. “As we have a high level of experience in space designing, we had our eye on advancements in technology for LED, which generally entails smallness, simplicity and ease of dimming ability,” explains Junko Kageyama, Sales Manager at Luci. “As a trusted member of Japan’s lighting industry, we believed we would have the ability to do something different to the newcomers in the market. “Our early days started with the Company providing a purely stock and selling business for RGB decorative lighting and signage lighting. After that, we have progressed and developed the original products we provided to adapt into the architectural and interior lighting industry.” The main products on offer from the Company are constantly evolving, a prime example being the fact that Luci has removed its RGB and signage products from its offering; however, its core concept of creativity will always remain the same, centrally revolving around the needs of customers and more specifically the particular light effect its customers want.

The Company is in the process of creating new ideas to challenge the industry’s current offerings
Determining quality
The Company is owned by Toshiteru Iwakiri and Tsukasa Fukuyama, the latter of which was in fact a cofounder of the TERAS holdings group. TERAS consists of three different subsidiaries, all of which are linked in terms of starting a business that purely responds to customers’ needs. Presently, Luci is proudly the second biggest subsidiary to undertake sales and development for its lighting products; its core business and services including indirect lighting for hotels, residences and commercial buildings. “Our research and development (R&D) team are particularly renowned for their work on researching new technologies and developing new products by co-operating with the sales team,” continues Kageyama. “The quality control (QC) team perfectly manages the production process of the factory, while determining the quality of products that will match the current market requirements.”
104

During the past five years in the Company’s production systems, huge improvements have been witnessed in the creation of stable products
At present, the Company is in a position to challenge for new functional lighting and insect repellent lighting in order to prevent various insects from finding their way into factories. And its history is firmly set in the ability to always challenge new ideas and breach new markets, providing there are customer needs to be met.
Philosophy of an innovator
Luci’s Company philosophy is and will always be engrained in its ability to work as an innovator, the focus being placed on doing its best for innovation in the industry. In part it creates a brilliant atmosphere within the Company that is much more fun than staying still in the market, while also challenging the Company to be the best it can be. In order for the Company’s goal to be attainable, the sales team, R&D team, and QC team will often argue heatedly when in the pursuit of creating better products and providing

better services; unafraid of being faced with a challenge. In comparison to other lighting manufacturers that have a long history in the industry, Luci is young, which provides an advantage as the Company is able to make quick-fire decisions, following them through with action. “During the past five years in the Company’s production systems, huge improvements have been witnessed in the creation of stable products,” affirms Kageyama. “Now the customers’ needs call for more variety and the Company is collaborating with other manufacturers to meet these needs.” Recently the Company’s production system has greatly improved when it comes to the creation of stable productions and stock availability, however, as aforementioned; Luci’s customers in today’s market need more variety.

Luci is focused on establishing the size and options in markets it branches into
Kageyama adds: “Nowadays we are collaborating with other manufacturers with products that can compensate for any gaps in our product offering. This means that we can provide the necessary line-up for client requirements as a one-stopshop.”
Period of transition
As many Japanese lighting companies have done in the past, Luci began its journey in China - selling there since 2009 - around the time of the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai expo, which sky-rocketed the amount of hotel projects and need for lighting designers and distributors in the country. Kageyama continues: “We then started to expand our market, opening both our Singapore and Hong Kong offices in 2012, before setting up our latest office in Dubai in 2016 which

provided us with a firm footing in the Middle East and a start in the European market.” When identifying new countries and markets to branch into, it is particularly important to establish the size and needs of the market, which will be a key factor in achieving success, particularly focusing on the specificities of lighting, interior design and lighting designers. Within this, 80 percent of the Company’s main products need to be customised; therefore it is critical to control the material and stock levels in all factories and warehouses. “We have had to utilise the use of software for unitary control of both material and inventory for supply chain management,” explains Kageyama. “This work began in 2015 and has since significantly contributed to minimising material stocks in several factories, helping to reduce the lead-time of customisation.

“For the Japanese market, we are able to deliver within approximately four days, even when it comes to having to custom-make or make changes to our product line.” In the markets Luci operates in outside of Japan, the time-scale is very much dependant on the scale of the project, whereby the Company will often anticipate trends and therefore, more often than not, it will have the necessary quantity of parts to assemble after receiving an order. Kageyama describes: “We know it

is extremely important that the lead times are particularly clear when we propose our products, making sure that clients are able to plan lighting installation schedules around the timeframes.”
Designing around space

Even under such mass production, SEED still emphasises on the quality consistency. Urakabe adds that SEED still continues 100 percent inspection prior to the shipment not only by mechanical system but also human involvement and SEED is very proud of its low level of claims from the markets on the products. The business becomes more international, but the requirements and needs for vision correction are “local”, the President and CEO stresses. The communication and hearing the voices of local partners such as ophthalmologists, optometrists and retail shops from the market is very important. SEED has enhanced the localisation of each overseas subsidiary as much as possible along with widely diversifying staffs in the head office in terms their nationalities. Investments have also been made into the Company’s workforce where -

once again - employees are continuing to benefit from SEED’s growing international status. The ability to research abroad and receive new stimulus and to establish new findings is healthily balanced against a primarily localised focus within its HR strategy. “The collaboration with the domestic and international academic institutions and other business enterprises also have given good fruits and sensitivities to SEED,” Urakabe adds. “SEED has entered into number of collaboration and joint research programs to bring new ideas into contact lens products in future.” Urakabe continues: “Localisation and internationalisation is important and possible thanks to the skill-sets available in Japan, but sometimes it is also good to expose yourself to outside ideas and concepts, therefore

Exciting development
The quality of manufacturing in Japan is world-renowned of course, and no less prevalent when it comes to the healthcare sector with an abundance of resources on SEED’s doorstep and quality control systems up there with the very best in the world. It’s no surprise therefore that the Company places such an emphasis on keeping its key production operations in Japan, but this is not to say that international growth isn’t thriving. Again centralised in Asia, its supply chain management strategy, for example, now features a series of satellite presence points across Asia and in Europe to better aid the export process; resultantly able to distribute
smaller or on-demand batches to be stored at these facilities ready for quick release, rather than housing all products under one roof. Urakabe affirms: “We can’t do everything ourselves though so it’s also important to work closely with partners around the world and ensure to deliver dedicated and qualified products to be satisfied by our customers.” All of these facets combined makes SEED unique not just in terms of its market-leading offering but in the way its products are manufactured and distributed to an ever-increasing footprint of customers. Urakabe himself describes the business as having adopted a different “industry map” to the norm, ensuring that all
elements complement each other for the benefit of the end-customer. “The development of the Asian market as far as this industry is concerned is encouraging, as a result of the heavy utilisation of certain products. Myopia is at high and further increasing faster than in areas like America and Europe,” the President and CEO concludes. “We therefore need to react to this and keep informing people in order to meet these complicated challenges, while looking to expand our own reach in the process. “As a proud member of the Asian community and in helping to tackle myopia, we are excited to see the development of our role in meeting these challenges moving forward.”

To establish the degree of hearing loss, a series of tests are conducted to objectively asses a customer’s hearing and central & central auditory processing ability.
Developments in hearing healthcare
Hearing testing has changed a lot in the recent past and is still changing with new testing procedures that are becoming available regularly. “To assess someone’s hearing problem, The Hearing Solution Group are not just assessing the functions of the ear (hearing) but also functions of the brain necessary to process heard sounds,” Stoifl continues. “The better and more detailed the assessment is, the easier it will be to select the necessary hearing devices technology and determine the short and longterm benefit and need for additional rehabilitation.” The ear is converting every minute detail of sounds into millions of electrical impulses which are

conducted to the auditory centers of the brain via the hearing nerve. The brain processes these impulses in patterns, to analyse, store, assign meaning to and retrieved when the same pattern is recognised again. Whereas the conversion of sound into electrical impulses is an inert process, the processes in the brain are learned and depend of constant practice to keep functioning at an optimum. Stoifl adds: “A hearing loss occurs when the ears ability to convert sounds accurately and fully into electrical impulses is impaired and results in less electrical impulses being conducted to the brain. The reduced input, over time, lead to deterioration of all central auditory processes and general cognitive abilities.”

Signia hearing aids: Hearing at a higher level • Innovative functions for special listening demands • Clinically proven hearing benefits and reduced listening effort 1,2 Sivantos is among the most successful hearing aid manufacturers in the world. Approximately one in four hearing aids sold worldwide was developed and manufactured by Sivantos. It is one of the most successful hearing aid manufacturers in the world. Sivantos took over Siemens’ hearing aid business in 2015 and launched its new premium brand Signia in 2016, upholding the high profile. In the recent months, three highly innovative Signia hearing aids have been introduced to the market – the Silk, Cellion, and Pure 13 BT. The main factor behind the success of these hearing aids is the outstanding speech intelligibility our latest technology affords. It is clinically proven that hearing effort is greatly reduced and speech understanding is even better in certain situations than for those with normal hearing. 1,2 Signia Pure 13 BT – Made for iPhone, fully connected. The new Signia Pure13 BT made for iPhone hearing aids give you the best of both worlds: Enjoy world class hearing and full connectivity iPhone and TV audio streamed directly via Bluetooth. The hearing aid establishes a wireless connection with the iPhone via Bluetooth so that phone calls can be made in HD quality, music can be listened to and video conferences can be heard clearly - and much more.
Signia Cellion – Make the most of your day. Our Signia Cellion hearing aids not only have all of the latest technologies that enable easy hearing, but they are also the world’s first hearing aids with revolutionary lithium-ion power cells that can be inductively recharged, i.e. wirelessly and contact-free. No more fiddly batteries that need replacing, just put your Cellion hearing aids into the charger and the smart electronics take care of the rest. Signia Silk – The hearing aid for people who don’t want to have hearing aids. One of the world’s smallest hearing aids, the Silk sits invisibly in the ear for complete discretion. Super soft and super comfortable, it fits immediately without the need for a specially tailored housing. And despite its amazingly tiny size, Silk delivers an outstanding hearing experience and high comfort. Our partnership – a story of success. Sivantos and Hearing Solutions Singapore have enjoyed a strong and trusty collaboration for the past 10 years. Both partners share the mission to increase hearing awareness in the local communities and to improve the quality life of those who have hearing issues. 1 Study conducted at the University of Northern Colorado, 2015, examined the effectiveness of the new features of primax by collecting and analyzing ongoing EEG data while subjects performed speech testing. For both primax features SpeechMaster and EchoShield, the objective brain behavior measures revealed a significant reduction in listening effort when the feature was activated. 2 Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014: Oldenburg Hörzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.

As the patient’s central auditory system readjusts to more stimulation a high resolution device can be gradually adjusted to take best advantage of this progress allowing the patient to comfortably regain his hearing. Sophisticated technology
The necessary technology level of a hearing aid is determined by objective test results, the build, colour and advanced technology features, like Bluetooth capability are left for each patient to select. Hearing aids come in a wide array of designs and prices, to a certain degree price depend on design and size of the hearing aids, however mostly prices are determined by sophistication of technology. Hearing aids today are miniature computers which are more or less sophisticated. Sophistication in a hearing aid means how high the resolution of loudness and frequency adjustment is and how good and how many adjustable parameters of noise reduction a certain technology provides. The benefit of a more expensive higher technology hearing aid are three fold, with higher resolution and better noise control allows for the Hearing aids to be better adjusted

Every additional 10 decibel of hearing loss increased the chance of falling 1.4 times. “Significantly higher incident of depression and isolation is another effect of untreated hearing loss, with studies showing older adults with untreated impaired hearing have a shorter lifespan than peers using hearing aids,” concludes Stoifl. “It is one of our aims to massively alter this and we hope in the future to see these instances drop through our work and the work of others in the industry.”

Peacehaven Nursing Home The Peacehaven Nursing Home and Day Centres are true success stories of The Salvation Army, providing a person-centred approach to care and centrally around the empowerment of residents and clients. “Our residents are well supported by medical specialists, and we have worked hard to specialise in Dementia Care,” explains Low Mui Lang, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Peacehaven. “They benefit from direct access to top-class nursing facilities, general practitioners services, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech therapy and pastoral care. “A multidisciplinary approach is adopted in developing either the resident or client’s individualised care plan, taking into consideration their needs and goals.” The nursing home has employed a variety of programmes and activities which is able to assist in keeping their minds active and maintaining physical health. “We are extremely proud of our Life We Know programme at Peacehaven, motivating our residents to invest some of their time in daily exercise, which enables them to reap the rewards by using the credits they have earned on activities that they enjoy doing - such as shopping, seeing a movie or going to the salon - all within the safety of the nursing home.” Thanks to the support from loyal donors, The Salvation Army has been able to tap into state-of-theart technology which has enabled it to improve the productivity of staff and fundamentally enhance the quality of care on offer. INGOT is an IT software that has been

implemented in Peacehaven Nursing Home a few years ago, and it has since streamlined the processes and improved the quality of care; not only this, the technology also focuses on cloud computing and connectivity, allowing staff to conveniently access a central database of information on which to record clinical assessments. Mui Lang explains: “This has enabled our nursing home to sizably cut-down the paper-heavy manual processes which will improve care and resident outcomes. With INGOT PCC, we are ready to provide an improved version with a far better person-centred approach which will be launched in the coming months.”
In 2015, Peacehaven introduced Gym Tonic into the nursing home and day centres, a programme which customises strength training exercises for the elderly who are either idle or more prone to issues such as falls. In doing this, it has enabled residents to remain active, utilising the system’s ability to enhance the productivity of physiotherapists as the equipment automatically collects resident’s physical assessment data and exercise records.

“As a Charity, we have always strived to continue to strengthen many aspects of our service,” explains Buckingham. “This has been attained through evolving our training, particularly focusing on professionalism and capabilities of employees via partnering with tertiary institutions and individual partners such as the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore Association for Social Workers and Early Childhood Development Agency.” Providing this training ensures that they possess the right skills, knowledge and in particular attitude to deliver quality care and services to beneficiaries. A prime example of this would be Peacehaven Nursing Home - an accredited training organisation under the Institute of Technical Education - which has seen many of its graduates becoming successful nursing professionals. “Our employees are provided with many opportunities to both learn and go onto share best practices in The Salvation Army and beyond,” continues Buckingham. “This is all done through funding and sponsorships from the various government ministries and agencies.”

Expanding services
Due to the scale of The Salvation Army, the challenges it is faced with will vary from country to country, with the most obvious being the recruitment of the right people that will assist in advancing the Charity’s work and finances, alongside general commitment to its services. “We are firmly committed to providing excellence in all aspects of the
services we offer, remaining engaged in the conversation of best practice and ensuring our services are recognised for quality of care,” describes Buckingham. “Alongside this, we have worked tirelessly to expand our services in the centres that make up our territory. For the more significant regions, hubs have been set up to help meet this growing demand from an equally expanding clientele, and for Asia, this journey began in Singapore, in 1984. “It started as a distributorship for SSI Schaefer, but they soon recognised the potential of the region and eventually took over the Company in 1995,” introduces Regional Director for APAC, the Middle East and Africa, Brian Miles. “Our office here in Singapore is now a SSI Schaefer hub - one of 12 globally - covering everywhere from India to South Korea with the exception of China which has its own; while we have also opened up offices across these other countries as well as long as they have sufficient volume to justify it.” Across this expanding footprint, and indeed the rest of the world, SSI Schaefer sticks to what it has always done best, while evolving into areas that best meet its customers’ requirements. Initiating as a specialist in the design, manufacture and distribution of industrial storage systems - from pallet racking systems to ASRS (automated storage and retrieval systems) - recent developments have also seen the successful integration of automation works. “The SSI Schaefer world changed in 2000 and 2001 with the acquisition of two companies to form SSI Schaefer Competent Centre Giebelstadt and SSI Schaefer Competent Centre Graz,

Meanwhile, the Competent Centre in Graz specialised in small part picking systems and with a range of case conveyors. “The two companies interfaced very nicely with all the industrial storage systems that SSI Schaefer had already been manufacturing for the previous 60 years, turning us from a service provider to a full systems integrator at the turn of the decade.” With this new business line in tow, and with the continued backing of colleagues in America and in Europe, SSI Schaefer in APAC has gone from strength to strength ever since, signifying even more concerted growth for the future, but also emphasising the kind of sustainable

Such flexibility and entrepreneurial flair not only lends itself to international growth and acquisitional prowess, but also to product innovation, research & development, and to solution modification. Resultantly, a whole host of new products and projects have been unveiled, even over the past couple of years, as an indictment of this agility. “At the CeMAT exhibition in Hannover in 2016, we introduced our

SSI Schaefer is ahead of the industry curve with both its implementation and saturation of the market
WEASEL®, a small automated guided vehicle (AGV) which can handle loads of up to 35 kilograms to move around the workplace or warehouse,” Miles offers as an example. “It won the IFOY award for new developments in the “Intralogistics Solutions” category and the simple, low cost alternative to conveyance systems has already taken off. “Another technology introduced a couple of years ago was a vertical high density storage lift which is controlled by our very own warehouse management system – WAMAS® software. The system resembles an oversized drawer cabinet, saving up to 90 percent of the floor space, can be built as high as 24 metres. Both of these originated in Europe and were brought over to Asia where they have been well received by the market place.” From an automation perspective, which is not as mature in APAC as it is in Europe and the US yet, SSI Schaefer is getting itself ahead of the industry

curve in its implementation and market saturation. One example being seen in Australia at present includes a palletised multi-deep channel system comprising three cranes on top of each other to triple throughput to this end; with similar products expected to reach Asian customers soon. Once they do reach the jurisdiction, manufacturing usually then transfers away from its European hubs to be managed in Singapore, and manufactured at its main Asian factory in Malaysia. The same has recently applied to its shuttle system, Cuby which has already begun to make waves in the retail market as a highspeed shuttle improving activity and throughput once again.

adopted in either the US or Europe already. And the same advantage in scope is apparent when it comes to the professional talent helping to manufacture and distribute the Company’s products as well. “We actually introduced a new branding programme this year, with some of our marketing people going over to take a course in Germany recently before bringing back and rolling out some of the ideas in Asia,” Miles notes. “Being part of a large group, we have an extensive training programme called SSI Schaefer Campus where hundreds of educational modules for all the SSI Schaefer products are carried out for the benefit of all engineers, product development staff, technicians and project managers.” The large home-grown workforce in Asia convenes to benefit from this international sharing of expertise on an ongoing basis, ensuring that each individual is keeping up not only with

the Company’s new products and solutions, but with wider industry trends as a whole. This is proving especially significant throughout the ongoing optimisation of automation services within the Company, as Miles details: “Automation is becoming increasingly

important to the Company’s turnover - representing around 50 percent of it - and it was because of new business strands and innovations such as this that we introduced the Malaysia factory to begin with. “Back then, in the ‘80s and ‘90s it didn’t make sense to ship materials half way around the world, especially when competing with local manufacturers and the same applies now as we introduce new products to the APAC market. The facility has therefore been expanded over the years to around 40,000 square metres with a capacity of 50,000 metric tonnes per annum.” The result is a local presence point that not only aids efficiencies, speed to market and lower costs, but also an established hub ready to help its clients make the same seamless transfer to the APAC region too; examples of note including BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Nestle and Unilever, to name a few.

Vision 2025
“It’s not a God-given gift to SSI Schaefer that we receive and retain these contracts though, and we have to work very hard to stay competitive on both a local and global level,” Miles emphasises. And to this end, the Company has spent somewhere in the region of €8 million on the Malaysian factory, to facilitate its own growth and to improve upon the equipment and
&

machines that help in producing such state-of-the-art products. “We’re getting to the point where we don’t need assistance from our colleagues in Europe on the manufacturing side, and we’ve also addressed the cost side of this through the implementation of lean manufacturing processes,” Miles adds. “Similarly, we’re also moving into robotics, particularly when it comes to welding, to improve areas of quality
and efficiency.” These facets combine to bring SSI Schaefer an overwhelming competitive advantage in the form of its product range, with even the larger multinational operators struggling to match the Company’s scope. SSI Schaefer is one of the only entities able to supply customers with the promise of a fully-automated warehouse where it can design and supply the racking system, the cranes, the conveying systems and even the IT; and this is proving to be a huge differentiator in the APAC region. “The other key advantage we have is our presence in the market place,” Miles picks up. “Across two factories - one in Malaysia and a smaller one in China - we now employ close to 630 people, with a further 400 working out of our offices in 12 APAC countries including our Singapore hub. “This means we are able to give our customers the luxury of speaking to a SSI Schaefer representative directly rather than via a third-party distributor, and this is the kind of strong service and support that we look to build up via our hubs in each region.” From this position of strength, SSI Schaefer is now able to look towards even more extensive growth in the years to come, a notion which Miles believes will be driven by an enhanced footprint and presence in China as well as further upgrades to its Malaysian factory. He concludes: “We’re looking today at our own Vision 2025 which we’ve been asked to prepare by the SSI Schaefer board to give us an overview of the market and where we plan to be for the next three-10 years. And certainly, larger manufacturing facilities are incorporated within that. “The factory can cater for 50,000 tonnes at present but with operations rising at an average rate of 10-15 percent per annum for the next five years, we now need to look at how to manage that exciting level of growth.”

Small Enough to Care
BIG Enough TO COPE Stena Marine Far East’s customer satisfaction-driven model befits a Company which continues to pride itself of on a balance of international scope and entrepreneurial flexibility Writer: Matthew Staff | Project Manager: Josh Hyland tena Marine Far East (SMFE) represents the latest in a long line of Northern Marine Group-driven entities innovating the world of marine and offshore services, and is holding true to these wider Group values via a strategy that encompasses growth, ingenuity, diversification and customer care. Formed as a combined business unit in 2016 to amalgamate all of Northern Marine’s businesses in East Asia under one regional umbrella, SMFE accounts for the Group’s numerous business activities across all relevant countries in the jurisdiction. Specialising - much like its owners, Northern Marine Group, and their parent Company, Stena AB - in a diverse range of marine and offshore services, the service scope of ship agency, marine supply, offshore catering management,
payroll and crew management, supply chain and logistics, technical consultancy, and project support services is making waves on one of the organisation’s key continents. “These services are delivered via a network of offices and warehouse/ distribution/import/export centres located across the region in Singapore, China, South Korea, the Netherlands and Indonesia, with more than 130 fulltime personnel employed onshore,” introduces subsidiary, Francois Marine Services’ Managing Director, John Ong. The recent addition of an international offshore catering management business – Francois Offshore Catering - in 2011 has added a further string to the SMFE bow in recent years, once again emphasising the proactive drive to reach new customers that the brand has become renowned for over the years.

John continues: “It was a relatively recent business development in 2011 following an opportunity with an existing client who was looking for a change of service provider who would bring higher quality, improved reliability and increased efficiency. “SMFE’s business in China has also allowed the Company to develop an internal wholesale supply chain direct from manufacturers in China and the wider South and East Asia region. SMFE is now looking to reverse this export wholesale supply chain to include imported goods for the China domestic market.” Introductions and diversifications such as this are an indictment of the Company’s overall goal to become a one-stop service solution provider able to tailor its offering to each client’s requirements and budget. As part of a huge Group, its clout and investment power has never been in doubt, but the ability to translate this into a more customised, customer-oriented model -

Regional operational synergies
SMFE’s origins can be traced back to the formation of Austen Maritime Services in 1986, a joint venture shipping agency between Northern Marine Management and P&O Services. And this set the tone for a journey of expansion and market capitalisation in order to bridge its Singaporean hub and its Chinese ambitions. “Francois Marine Services, a Singapore ship chandler, founded by John Ong in 1988, became a fullyowned subsidiary of Austen in 2005,” SMFE Director, Darren Ellis picks up. “In January, 2013, Northern Marine acquired the remaining 50 percent shareholding from P&O, resulting in Austen and Francois becoming fully-owned subsidiaries of the newly formed Stena Marine Singapore holding company.”

Darren was integral to the ‘what, where and how’s’ of potentially moving into the Chinese market over the course of 2012 and 2013, progressing into a 2014 expansion which saw the establishment of Stena Marine Shanghai. Further expansion and growth then followed before Austen Maritime Services was established as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE) in the Shanghai EXP Free Trade Agreement; these companies remaining under Darren’s management to this day. “The China-based companies replicate many of the Singapore-based business activities, albeit focusing on the Chinese market, which has created a number of regional operational synergies,” he explains. “In 2016 the natural decision was taken to combine the East Asia and China business units, aligning them strategically and consolidating resources and focus,

conditions, SMFE has retained key long-term contracts with oil majors and international shipping lines, and has continued to secure new business and new clients in China, the wider Asia region and on a global basis. “We attribute this to putting customer care, effective communication and our customers’ needs at the core of our business philosophy. Working and partnering with our customers to achieve longterm success in spite of the emerging market conditions; we strive to deliver value for money, to take care of our customers and their assets, and to ensure that we contribute to their long-term success.” Synonymous with complex projects across areas of new builds, conversion,
docking, towing, and much more - on both onshore and offshore levels - such acumen in China and Southeast Asia continues to thrive, and is also supported by its European counterparts which have been aided via the establishment of its new Rotterdam warehouse and distribution centre in recent months. The imminent Singapore business complex will be every bit as pivotal to the global Group moving forward, as SMFE continues to adapt to where the demand is. “One of our successful strategies has been opening in new locations as a result of a specific project or contract, utilising the experience gained and partnerships established to successfully enter a new market or region,” Darren reemphasises. “This has allowed us to establish the required cost base and infrastructure, to develop a working knowledge of the specific local market, to develop local contacts and relationships, and to collaborate with new or existing partners which can ensure success in the short to medium-term.” John adds: “The focus for 2017 is therefore to establish ourselves in the European market via the Rotterdam operation and to open a modern, sophisticated and state-of-the-art complex in Singapore, which will assist in taking the business onto a new level amid a number of new and exciting projects in the pipeline for 2018.”
Personnel, trends, future
Tasked with implementing each new innovation and maintaining the reputation of Stena in each new project is a highly-skilled and appropriately sourced workforce. And while - once again - SMFE is able to leverage its international scope in terms of training, exposure and experience, the emphasis when it comes to initial hiring remains local and socially responsible. “The China-based team of 35

comprises only one ex-pat and the longest-serving Chinese employee has been with the Company in excess of 15 years,” Darren offers as an example. “SMFE is a well-balanced mix of youth, experience and expertise. SMFE also places a strong emphasis on developing our local internal resources, with a view to being able to promote from within and offer our employees the necessary opportunity, desire to succeed and well-defined career development. “The global expansion of the Northern Marine Group has presented international opportunities and some secondments for experienced employees who wish to travel and assist in setting up the business in new locations. However, wherever possible, SMFE always plans to employ local talent, as localisation is key to the sustainability of the business in all global locations.” The success in creating such sustainability in such a short space
Localisation is the key to sustainability
of time is even more impressive when considering it was built from nothing in China back 2012. But much like its approach in Singapore, key partnerships with local academic institutions has helped to fast-track its status to an employer of choice. “Sustainable development is one of SMFE’s main goals,” Darren continues. “We have to achieve a balance between taking care of our customers, our employees and the environment;
contributing to our customers’ success and society for the long-term. “Surviving in business and the ability to create something successful and lasting requires foresight, business acumen, constant attention and care.” This acumen, attention and care over the coming months will be directed towards myriad opportunities; including the refinement of its global integrated supply chain, the global expansion of its marine agency, an increased market share across the SMFE base, and continuous migrations into new markets virtue of existing synergies and business arms. And, as always, each new step will be taken with the customer at the forefront of considerations. As John aptly concludes, “although SMFE is an expanding Group of companies with a global presence, we continue to place customer care at the core of our business, remaining: ‘small enough to care, big enough to cope’”.

he past 14 months have proven to be a particularly exciting time for Ultra Deep Solutions, developing the biggest construction DP3 deep-diving vessel in the world and a project that will put the Company on the map as the go-to in the industry. The vessel will have the capability to conduct dives up to 600 meters - the first of its kind - with research still ongoing, many exciting developments are being made to the technologies used within Ultra Deep’s ship. “Our vessel is being designed by Norwegian designers, Salt, at 161 metres
long and with a 600 and 100 tonne crane,” explains Jithu Sukumaran, General Manager at Ultra Deep Solutions. “Alongside the sheer size of the vessel, we will also be the first in the world to have a well intervention and a flexipipe lay combined tower which will add exponential value to our one of a kind fleet.” Ultra Deep Solutions is becoming particularly well known for its ability to build state-of-the-art DP3s, the original aim being to grow the businesses reputation in the industry through the creation of these vessels. Alongside this new-found reputation are the core competencies of the Company, with specific divisions to cover all aspects of the market, such as subsea diving, offshore construction and ship building - the area in which Jithu Sukumaran is in charge. “The team of approximately 50 people headed by Shel Hutton with the focus on constructing the vessels,” continues Sukumaran. “However, UDS also run ship building consultancy services for external clients, including technical specifications and contract assistance, review and system engineering assistance.”

The Company’s core consultancy is of course ship building, involved in five vessels now and providing clients with subsea support services and a range of activities including reaching offshore installation and construction inspection of maintenance for existing pipeline facilities. “Currently our first vessel is on schedule to be delivered at the end of June,” affirms Sukumaran. “Lichtenstein - the name of our vessel - will be travelling to Malaysia for six months once it is finished, the first of our exciting new collection.” Founded in 2014, the Ultra Deep solutions has come a very long way over the course of just three years, now with multiple vessel launches on the horizon including DP3 Van Gogh in April 2018,Andy Warhol in July 2018 and Mattisee in 2019. “We have worked hard to become reliable specialists in the design,

construction and operation of world-class ultra deep diving heavy construction vessels for the offshore industry,” Sukumaran adds. “Now our expertise in both onshore and offshore provides top quality offshorerelated services and knowledge to clients, consistently delivering high standards.”
Investment in technology
The Company was very lucky to have a creator Mr.Sheldon Hutton, who with him brought few talented young minds for the development of the company. With his support, Ultra Deep Solutions has been able to tap into the best possible technology available, also working with world renowned partners such as MAN Germany, KONGSBERG NORWAY, ROLLSROYCE NORWAY, MCGREGOR, and reputed designers from Norway. Sukumaran describes: “Van Gogh has been designed according to the

class notation of achieving a clean design, alongside SPS codes and the pivotal importance placed on achieving a low fuel consumption, subsequently reducing emissions for the environment and focusing on the clean environment and technology. “Our vessel is designed with the purpose of fulfilling an array of duties, including diving operations with 18 men - single bell SAT dive systems, 24 men twin bell sat systems, AHC cranes and seabed construction work.” Additionally, the ship will be arranged with twin work ROV with Active Heave LARS available in the hangar, while it will also be able to perform the field support duties expected of a subsea construction vessel that is available for deployment worldwide. Sukumaran continues: “In keeping with our entire range of ships, Andy Warhol is being created with the employment of a clean design in mind, and with that setting the industry standard for the way that subsea vessels should be designed in the future.”
Future fleet developments
In order to continuously carry out such high standards of work in the industry, Ultra Deep Solutions ensures that it is hiring experienced people to fill the highly-skilled roles. “We have specialist roles that need specific training, for example our divers and engineers need constant training to ensure that they remain up to date with the latest industry trends,” explains Sukumaran. “As a Company
We have specialist roles that need specific training, for example our divers and engineers need constant training to ensure that they remain up to date with the latest industry trends
we are particularly focused on offering chances to train as well as promotions up the ladder, we have found that this appeals to young people and provides them with the chance to train in all aspects of the vessels and grow within the Company.” As Ultra Deep Solutions is based in Singapore, a large proportion of its staff are Singaporean, with foreign talent brought in for the particularly specialised jobs from all over the world. Staffing of the vessels does slightly vary, mostly dependant on where the ship itself will be based. “The market that we are working in can be slow at times, however, there are a lot of fleet developments happening,” concludes Sukumaran. “I believe by 2019 there will be a plethora of opportunities for us to work with a wider range of companies, moving forward we are heading into a particularly exciting time for the Company.”

oung Investment Group has experienced a great and dynamic growth during the past few years, establishing itself in Asia with an incredibly strong reputation as one of the youngest and fastest growing conglomerates in Myanmar and a vast network of 16 diversified companies. The Company is a completely privately-owned family business, run by immediate family and a selection of independent Directors which sit on the board alongside the professional management in charge of each of the companies. With its origins in the mining sector, Young Investment Groups current Chairman inherited a small mining operation in 1990, a business that since then has expanded significantly. “Young’s Auto was established in 2002 and at the time was one of the biggest motor import companies operating in Myanmar,” explains Nag Saw Htwe, Managing Director at Young Investment Group. “Our trading division was then expanded in order to increase our import options to include heavy machinery, trucks and farm equipment.” Since that point Young Investment Group has employed a strategy to develop a widely diverse portfolio of companies, working across the broad business spectrum that is available in when working within the Myanmar economy. “We have also set ourselves a higher goal to play a large part in the development of Myanmar, going beyond simply building material wealth and rather working towards improving and empowering the human capital,” continues Htwe. “The Company is lucky to have the opportunity to offer employment and training to the young people of Myanmar, aiding them in achieving their potential as entrepreneurs in their own right.”
