In Asia Outlook’s first edition of 2018, we look to align our own vision with one of the continent’s most prominent utility enablers in the form of TNB REMACO. Injecting a little energy into a new year is never a bad thing, especially when compounding such turnkey exploits with a more all-encompassing “quest for excellence”. A Quest for EPC The Malaysian subsidiary of TNB REMACO looks to replicate its renowned performance delivery across Tenaga Nasional Berhad Group O&M and R&M domains in the engineering, procurement and construction space has, over the past 30 years, differentiated itself as a one-stop shop provider of power plant repair and maintenance services, as well as entire lifestyle-focused solutions; and is now looking to apply its renowned expertise to the EPC market too. “Over the next five years, TNB REMACO will become a prominent EPC company for the region, all the while maintaining our core strength in O&M and repair and maintenance services for the utility and oil & gas industries. From there, we will also spread our wings into the renewable energy segment in the local market,” announces the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, Anuar Yusoff. Compounding this energetic introduction to 2018 is old friend, Envac Singapore. Over the past two years, the waste management specialist has grown tremendously, and we catch up with the Company’s Asia Pacific Vice President, Tan Chin Tiong to find out how the “tech capital of Asia” is being leveraged from a waste management perspective. Rounding up our opening showcasing assortment of the year is a tasty trip behind the scenes of Secret Recipe Cakes & Café, and a leap in to the safe hands of Access World Logistics; the latter setting the tone for a front-of-book section with the “quest for excellence” as a prominent notion. In the logistics domain, the quest is all but completed for UPS, and we follow up on the supply chain heavyweight’s recent air shipment announcement which will see its Boeing relationship strengthen and its aircraft fleet grow. And finally, the quest for gold medals is finally underway in PyeongChang as the 2018 Winter Olympics skates, slides and slaloms its way into living rooms worldwide for the next two weeks. For the city itself though, the quest for sustainable excellence represents a much longer journey. Matthew Staff ISSUE 31

China’s Winter Resorts Face Tougher Terrain despite Olympics Excitement At its peak a decade ago, the Muchengjian mine churned out mountains of coal on the western outskirts of Beijing. Now, the mine in Beijing’s Mentougou district is pinning its future on whiter slopes: It plans to transform itself into a winter sports resort, turning some of the underground shafts where miners once chiselled coal into a 1.25-kilometer air-conditioned track for cross country skiing. An après-ski spa and a department store selling winter sports gear are also on the drawing board. Muchengjian’s planned ski resort, planned for completion later this year, is just one of many popping up across northern China as local governments look to pivot

8

economies from heavy industry towards consumer services – and cash in on a skiing boom fuelled by rising incomes and changing consumer tastes. Skier visits to Chinese resorts rose 15.9 percent last year to 17.5 million, according to the China Ski Industry White Book, an annual report by Carving Ski, a Beijing-based ski industry consultancy, distributor and service provider. The boom is also underpinned by a pledge by President Xi Jinping to get 300 million Chinese on skis and skates for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. However, the rush to build slopes is raising concerns about misplaced investment that could hold back the long-term development of the industry, experts say.

“A lot of money wants to join the industry, but they have no idea how to invest,” said Bennie Wu, chief executive of Carving Ski. “We don’t want too much money to come in with no clear idea of how to use it, it’s not good for the market.” China currently has more than 700 ski facilities - outdoor and indoor nationwide, and Wu warned that some would struggle to survive after the Olympics shine wears off. Outdoor ski resorts are also being reined in as the Government steps up environmental requirements, including on the water used for snowmaking in the arid north. Chongli, a town about four hours by car from Beijing that will host Olympic ski events, spent 550 million yuan on improvements to a nearby reservoir in 2014 in order to supply five million cubic meters of water annually to local ski resorts for snowmaking, according to state media. Chongli has capped the number of large resorts in the area at nine, while Beijing has also stopped approving new large outdoor ski facilities.

Colourful Makeover puts Mumbai Slum on Tourist Map A colourful paint job has transformed one of Mumbai’s drab hilltop slums into a tourist destination. During a recent journey on a Mumbai metro train, Dedeepya Reddy was struck by the grim appearance of a slum in Asalpha in the city’s eastern suburbs as she stared out from her air-conditioned carriage. Reddy, a Harvard Universityeducated co-founder of a creative agency, was keen to brighten the lives of slum residents, while also changing the perception of slums being dirty and dangerous, and decided on a simple makeover. Armed with dozens of cans of colourful paint, Reddy and a team of

about 700 volunteers painted the walls and alleyways of the hilltop slum over two weekends. Residents, at first sceptical, also got involved and helped paint quirky murals, the 31-year-old said. “When you look at slums, you think they are shabby and dirty, and that also becomes a reflection of the people who live there,” Reddy told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “We used bright colours to change how slums and their residents are viewed. It also gives residents a

sense of pride and dignity about their homes.” Up to 37 million households, or about a quarter of India’s urban population, live in informal housing including slums because of an acute shortage of affordable housing, according to social consultancy FSG. In space-starved Mumbai, which has some of the priciest real estate in the world, the shortage is even more critical, with hundreds of migrants from rural areas cramming into the city every day to seek better prospects.

Thailand Expects 300,000 Tourists from China during Lunar New Year Thailand’s tourism body expects 300,000 visitors from China during the Lunar New Year holidays, a nearly 18 percent rise from a year ago. During the same holidays in 2017, the number of visitors from China was hit by a Thai Government crackdown on budget tourism and the mourning period for the country’s late king. Tourism accounts for about 12 percent of gross domestic product in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, making it one of the most important drivers of growth. The biggest number of foreign visitors come from China. Chinese tourists during the Lunar New Year period, which this year begins on 15 February and lasts until 21 February, will “generate about eight billion baht ($253.9 million) in revenue,” Santi Chudintra, a Deputy Governor at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) told reporters recently. In 2017, about 255,000 Chinese tourists visited during the Lunar New Year.

Swiss Re said it is in talks to sell a minority stake to SoftBank Group in a deal that could be worth $10 billion or more and would mark the Japanese company’s biggest move yet into financial services. The potential sale of up to one third of the Swiss reinsurer, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, would also show SoftBank’s ambitions to broaden its investments, which already include its $93 billion Vision Fund for technology projects. “Swiss Re informs that it is engaged in preliminary discussions with SoftBank Group Corp regarding a potential minority investment in Swiss Re,” the world’s second-largest reinsurer said. Analysts said SoftBank could be attracted by Swiss Re’s research capabilities and undervalued stock, while the Company’s cash generation could prove attractive. “Swiss Re has a strong balance sheet and pays a high dividend yield – above five percent – which I think they can keep up,” Stefan Schuermann, at Bank Vontobel in Zurich said.

China’s Banking Regulator Targets Corporate Debt China’s banking regulator offered an ambitious report of its priorities for the current year that included lowering corporate debt, reducing shadow banking and cleaning up financial holding groups, as part of official efforts to reduce financial risk. In a recent statement, the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) said that overall risk in the banking sector was under control, but the situation remained “grim and complicated”. “Regulators must keep clear heads and cannot be blindly optimistic,” it said. The statement followed the conclusion of CBRC’s national banking supervision and management meeting, which outlines the year’s key goals. Among the regulator’s top priorities is lowering corporate debt, while strictly controlling credit to highly indebted firms, it said. CBRC also elevated cleaning-up financial holding companies and disposing of high-risk institutions, a move that could pave the way for the restructuring of some high-profile companies.

China Puts Finishing Touches to Three-Year Smog Crackdown Plan China is drawing up plans for tougher curbs on smog during the next three years, an environment ministry official said recently, after a five-year crackdown on pollution helped it attain air quality targets in January.

“A three-year battle plan in the war to protect blue skies is being hammered out by officials of the Ministry of Environmental Protection,” said spokesman Liu Youbin, and it will incorporate tougher curbs on major industrial regions. Key areas facing such restrictions are the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei zone in the country’s north and the Yangtze and Pearl River deltas further south. “The new three-year plan is expected to be completed in the first half of the year,” Liu told reporters.

A New Horizon

n 6 July, 2011, the International Olympic Committee formally announced PyeongChang as the 2018 host of the Winter Olympic Games; push-starting a speedy journey towards an event that is now on the cusp of sliding into spectators’ living rooms, worldwide. For the athletes, it’s an ongoing journey of course, with the thought of a trip to South Korea back then eclipsed by the more imminent prospect of the Sochi games in 2014. For the city itself though, planning and preparation began almost immediately, but said forecasting

and arranging spreads far beyond ski slopes, ice rinks and cross country routes. Much of a bidder’s success actually now revolves around the notion of legacy, rather than athletic readiness in the modern day Olympic handbook. As epitomised by the likes of London, Rio de Janeiro and Sochi, a city needs to be able to sell the Olympics as a social enabler and a responsible, economic facilitator long after the final gold medal is handed out, and PyeongChang is striving to take this notion to even higher climbs this year via a sustainability strategy that will bring “new horizons to people and nature”.

S

P

“Sustainable development means development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the potential needs of future generations. It is to meet the needs of our generation with inheriting a healthy and prosperous life to our descendants,” the Games announces on its official website. “The key message of sustainable development is to ensure continuous prosperity of human society by pursuing a harmonious and balanced development in environment, economy and society, and to avoid inconsiderate development.” The statement continues: “There is a growing global consensus that sustainable development and prosperity must be applied to large-scale international sporting events such as the Olympics that can have a significant impact on the environment, economy and society

O

R

T

for a long period from preparation to post-utilisation. Previous host cities of the Olympic Games have also been working to achieve a sustainable legacy throughout a series of Games activities.” For PyeongChang, such activities will focus on areas of green optimisation, nature, legacy, diversity and engagement via the application of various monitoring and strategies before, during and after the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

ASIA Under the banner, “A new horizon for sustainability - furthering benefits to people and nature”, the city is partnering with and supported by a host of market-leading names including CocaCola, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, Bridgestone, McDonalds, Korean Air, Panasonic and Airbnb, to bring a sustainable legacy to the Gangwon Province and the Republic of Korea long after the sporting spectacle is over.

Clarity, preciseness and transparency

Far more than an addendum to the overall ‘Olympic spirit’ or Games philosophy, sustainability is a prime facet of the overall agenda, epitomised by the PyeongChang Organising Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG). The vision is to take a concerted step forward in terms of sustainability standards and performance levels

that will be used as barometers of the overall Games’ success in the years to come. For the global sports fan, medals will be counted and achievements will be logged, but for local residents and the wider country, success will be intrinsically linked to sustainability and legacy. “In order to ensure systemic implementation of sustainability and to raise awareness of participants on sustainability in all phases of activities such as the preparation of the Olympic Games, hosting of the events, and post management; the International Standard for Event Sustainability Management (ISO20121:2012) is applied to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” the organisation explains to this end. Consequently, PyeongChang’s sustainability will be managed from a perspective of stewardship, inclusivity, integrity and transparency. The latter is detailed: “Following its strict moral compass, POCOG shall operate in an honest and trustworthy manner to meet international standards when working to achieve sustainability. In its decision-making process and relevant activities for achieving sustainability, POCOG is committed to clarity, preciseness, and transparency.”

O L Y M P I C S

POCOG adds: “Sustainable development in all pillars of environment, society and economy is pursued, and POCOG exerts its upmost efforts to create [a] tangible and intangible Olympic Legacy. To achieve this mission, the following sustainability management policy came to be established.” Sustainable management policy: • POCOG establishes goals and action plans to achieve Olympic Games principles, objectives, values and policy • POCOG abides by both Korean and international laws and regulations on the operation of the Games • POCOG applies sustainable management policy to the organisations, tasks and facilities involved in the Games’ management and operation • POCOG fulfils its environmental, economic and social responsibilities through continual improvement the Games operation • POCOG unfolds proactive efforts to accomplish a low carbon green Olympic Games with the sense of responsibility for the environment • POCOG strives for lasting development of the local community through activation of local economy and regional integration • POCOG enables PyeongChang 2018 to contribute to the promotion of Olympism through winter sports

Driving each and every strand, POCOG’s established sustainability management system strives to strike a

balance across environmental, economic and social implications in order to tick all boxes. These are then being enacted by a ‘plan-do-check-act’ framework which has already been put into place, and will become apparent in the immediate aftermath of the Games themselves. Each stage of the framework incorporates a ‘goal’ and ‘action’ element to it, with the former ‘Plan’ strand comprising feedback from stakeholders and the formulation of responsibilities as its goal and an operational sustainability management taskforce and set of performance indicators as its action; by way of example. ‘Do’ raises sustainability awareness alongside crucial supply chain partners

before applying specific training and deliverables; while ‘Act’ looks to improve overall management of sustainable principles before putting into action a series of performance improvement measures and gapbridges. Finally, ‘Check’ monitors and evaluates management performance by way of an audit before said audit is reported to an executive. Conducted both prior to and during the Games, the foundations are of course being laid, but the true test of PyeongChang’s sustainability success will come in the years following. A series of sustainability and legacy reports will be published as evidence of the city’s achievements but the proof will largely come from the eyes of the beholders. As is evident in

London and Rio on a positive note, or indeed Athens from a not-so positive perspective, the transformation of the city and its Olympic village is a physical one, not a conceptual one. Encompassing extensive social impacts, and more poignant ecological consideration, the fruits of PyeongChang’s labours will be witnessed and judged from an infrastructural perspective over the coming years, and only once its spoken-about objectives are visibly present and correct will it be awarded the gold medal it so craves. POCOG concludes: “The world’s best athletes will compete on Asia’s centre stage to launch new horizons in winter sports and to create a sustainable legacy for Gangwon Province and the Republic of Korea. PyeongChang’s sustainability management strategy consists of five key themes and 17 main topics covering environment, economy and society, and various activities and programmes are implemented under the vision: a “New horizon for sustainability – Furthering benefits to people and nature.”

HEUP Global logistics leader, UPS has committed to the purchase of 18 additional aircrafts as it targets enhanced Asian, European and US supply chain improvements Writer: Matthew Staff PS has announced that it intends to purchase an additional 14 Boeing 747-8F Freighters and four new Boeing 767 aircraft as it looks to compound its already market-leading supply chain network around the world. Specifically targeting Asia, Europe

and the US, the 14 new cargo jets and additional four 767s will compound the Company’s international air shipment portfolio; providing additional capacity in response to accelerating demand. All of the new aircraft will be added to the existing fleet as opposed to replacing existing aircraft, highlighting an emphasis on growth rather than

upgrades, and will be delivered on an expedited schedule. The new arrivals will complement UPS’ 2016 order of an initial 14 Boeing 747-8 Freighters; the resultant 32 set to be delivered by the end of 2022, adding a total of more than nine million pounds to the Company’s cargo capacity.

China’s Rural REJUVENATION The Chinese Government has released a document stating plans to fully reconstruct its rural infrastructure within the next 20 years, changing the face of its agriculture sector Writer: Phoebe Calver

hina has recently laid out plans to modernise its rural areas by 2035, aiming to boost the farming sector, rural incomes and general living standards. This is all according to a recent governmental policy statement that has emerged amid the growing concern for the widening wealth gap, as well as a slowing economy. It has become clear to the Government that there is room for a lot to be accomplished in terms of the reconstruction of the rural area, with opportunities rising to achieve top-level design within the countryside and hopes to achieve higher prosperity. The main body of the document outlines a National Strategic Plan for Rural Vitalisation, with the main body of the work to be carried out between 2018 and 2022. The state news agency, Xinhua published a new policy statement which outlined the plan by China’s State Council and the Central Committee of the Communist Party late recently. The policy statement continued to outline the planned objectives and tasks that will be clearly outlined by 2020, and this will specify the priorities and steps for each region and the project developments that will be taking place there.

Within the document, it has called for the significant progression of rural rejuvenation by 2020, agricultural modernisation by 2035, enabling the rebuilding of a strong agricultural sector by 2050. At present China has the largest agriculture sector in the world, with hundreds of millions of people working as farmers, however, due to the small size and rundown nature of a large proportion of farms the productivity is increasingly low. This new plan should work towards closing the gap between urban and rural productivity, eliminating poverty and improving life in the countryside. In some of the better-developed villages, the main priority will be placed on working to increase infrastructure for public services. It is important to bear in mind that some villages will have a long and rich history of natural and cultural resources, therefore any developments must be carried out delicately. In the villages that are

24

currently suffering from especially harsh living conditions, more effort will be put in place to implement a complete restructure. The Chinese economy is taking a measured step towards using highquality construction and development

techniques, which will in turn enable it to be more competitive in areas such as agriculture through achieving higher productivity for longer. All these developments are not being carried out to encourage the urban residents to purchase properties in the affected rural areas, but instead to create places for rural tourism and older services to flourish. This is the first year that the document has included long-term targets for the reconstruction and development of the agricultural sector. The Chinese Government has tried to modernise its farming sector in the past in order to make it more efficient, however this is the first complete overhaul to its infrastructure that has been planned. The document reiterated plans to improve state auctions and said the Government would continue to hold special sales to speed up consuming the stockpiles. China is also trying to shift the focus to quality rather than quantity

ASIA by promoting varieties in higher demand, such as high-gluten wheat, or corn used to make silage for dairy cows; hence choosing to work on the development of the rural structure. Those efforts will continue, it stated within the document, which alongside complete reconstruction also called for upgrading of farm machinery, accelerating the development of modern crops and the development of digital agriculture. China is trying to improve financing in rural areas to support modernisation. The document said Beijing would guarantee “strategic financial input into the revitalisation, with public finance prioritising rural areas. At the press conference in support of the Document, a representative for the Government said that new avenues for rural fundraising were also needed, while revenues from land transfers needed to be channelled back to the countryside.

Transport Links W H E N Y O U R E A C H Fiji, you will find a variety of public transport options available to you, including buses, shared taxis and private taxis, all of which have reasonable rates depending on how far you require to travel. It will quickly become apparent that taxis make up a large proportion of the traffic both in and around the country’s capital city, while buses also contribute every half hour. If you are located on western Taveuni, take note that buses only run a handful of times each day

and a taxi will be your most likely form of reliable transportation. If you do happen to use a taxi and notice that it has a meter, be sure to ask your driver to switch it on as the ride will be far cheaper than a negotiated price. Depending where you are staying during your time in Fiji, there are also an array of inter-island ferries run by South Sea Cruises around Mamanuca Island resorts. If you require a transfer out to the remote Yasawa Islands, Awesome Adventures Fiji will provide you with daily transfer opportunities.

All of the inter-island ferry services are reasonably priced and incredibly safe, just bear in mind that if you are travelling during the school holidays the ferries are more likely to be crowded. You will also notice during your time in Fiji that travelling around on a bicycle is increasingly popular for both tourists and locals alike. If you do decide to make your way around by bike, make sure you are well equipped with spares as bike shops are few and far between in Fiji

SOUTH S O U T H

Appeal and accessibility are concepts at two different stages when it comes to the South Pacific, as the first remains almost unparalleled and the latter improves year-on-year Writer: Matthew Staff Project Manager: Ryan Gray

or a region so intrinsically linked to the notion of ‘paradise’ it comes as no surprise that the South Pacific relies primarily on tourism as its economic platform. Business and tourism are one of the same to the cluster of island nations littered around the ocean, with one only thriving if the other is enabling. Naturally, the more extensive hubs of Australia and New Zealand facilitate each state’s prevalence to a certain

extent, but in reality, the likes of Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, American Samoa, Kiribati, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru and Niue all have their own, unique appeals that - relatively speaking - ensure almost unrivalled visitor satisfaction and economic sustainability in equal measure. Christopher Cocker, Chief Executive Officer at the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) notes: “Tourism

continues to be an important industry for the Pacific, and SPTO member governments have invested tremendously in their respective tourism sectors to ensure its sustainability. “For a long time, SPTO has strongly advocated for the tourism industry, specifically to lobby support from national leaders for the development of the sector. Now with various Pacific Island governments mainstreaming

region have expanded exponentially over the past few years. As recently as 10 years ago, annual visitor arrivals were nearly half of that seen in 2017. “The region has also grown in terms of source markets. We have long enjoyed Australia (30 percent) and New Zealand (20 percent) as our traditional source markets and quite confidently, tourists visiting the region were predominantly from these markets. Now, our source markets have expanded to include

China, Japan, Europe, and the US to name a few,” Cocker explains. Vaster influences and more of a globalised sample of visitors of course adds certain pressures in terms of keeping up appearances, but each country in kind has responded accordingly; improving its levels of infrastructure, corporate facilitation and especially environmental adherences to complement the unchanging landscapes, climate, friendliness and customer service.

The Business End Smart and strategic marketing initiatives from each Pacific destination have further contributed to the recent success enjoyed by the region from a business travel perspective. And internally, this has had a profound knock-on effect on the local community and budding young professionals. Cocker continues: “We have a lot of young entrepreneurs in our tourism industries across the Pacific who are innovative, creative and fearless.

“ T H E C H A L L E N G E S W E face as a region are the same as those experienced in the past. For example, infrastructure is still a problem; greater access through aviation is still lacking; and inter-island connectivity still needs to be improved,” Cocker continues in laying out the South Pacific’s continuous strive for improvement. “While we still have the same challenges, I believe our region is

blessed with donors and development partners such as China, South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand etc, who are keen on providing the much-needed technical and financial assistance. “We now have better airports, improved port facilities, new roads and bridges, and other types of infrastructure that would appeal to our growing visitor numbers.”

They are not afraid to enter into new territories. I would also add that a growing confidence in our respective business environment has contributed to the growth of the Pacific as a business travel hub.” A positive cycle has subsequently formed whereby heightened business acumen continues to encourage larger swathes of business professionals and business events to each island; resultantly encouraging the entrepreneur fraternity even further as a result. Fiji serves as a prime example to this end through its hospitality revolution which has, in turn, attracted numerous regional and international forums and conferences. “Again this then adds to the growing appeal of tourism as a whole,” Cocker

says in completing the harmonious cycle. “Several of our islands are now following in Fiji’s footsteps and I would say Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tonga have done quite well in establishing new routes through their respective national airlines. Such developments guarantee more business travel as connectivity is available now where it once was absent. This increases more business and tourism activity between our island countries.”

South Pacific Tourism Organisation T H E M E E T I N G S , I N C E N T I V E S , conferences and exhibitions (MICE) market has inevitably contributed greatly to the Pacific’s heightened business status as a result of the aforementioned infrastructural developments; reflecting positively on each national Government of course, but especially on associations such as the SPTO. Christopher Cocker (CC): The South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) was originally called the Tourism Council of the South Pacific (TCSP) when it was established in June, 1988. The founding members recognised the need for increased cooperation in matters relating to tourism promotion and marketing which necessitated the establishment of a body to be responsible for tourism promotion matters. They also saw the need to work together in the coordination and planning of promotion and marketing strategies to be undertaken in conjunction with the work of other regional and international organisations. Its purpose was to develop, through cooperation, the tourism industries of the South Pacific and by doing so, seek to foster travel in the region. Asia Outlook (AsO): Since inception, how has the South Pacific Tourism Organisation developed and progressed in terms of its key objectives and the messages it tries to get across?

56

CC: The evolution of the organisation has been partially driven by the demands and needs of its member countries, changes in management, the availability of resources, and priorities of donor agencies. National Tourism Offices (NTOs) from its member countries and industry capacity levels have also evolved since SPTO’s establishment which has impacted upon the role and priorities of the organisation. From a solo role of tourism promotion and marketing, it has expanded its mandate to include tourism development. The organisation has gone beyond its traditional marketing role and progressed to also undertake work related to digital marketing, sustainable tourism development, research and statistics, and project management and implementation, to name a few. SPTO has secured donor funding over the years which has greatly assisted in the implementation of work programmes across the Pacific. AsO: And how has this evolution been reflected in terms of association membership numbers? CC: With the increasing need for capacity building through training, tourism marketing tools, and other priorities, coupled with SPTO’s ability to deliver accordingly, SPTO’s membership base has also increased. From nine founding government members, SPTO now has 18 government members with the inclusion of the People’s Republic of

China. Its private sector membership has also grown to include more than a 100 members. From its TCSP days, SPTO’s traditional development partners have mainly been the European Union and the members of the Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP). That landscape has since changed for SPTO whose development partners now include organisations like the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ), New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), Sustainable Travel International (STI), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), to name a few. AsO: What is in store for the South Pacific over the course of 2018 to continue the good work already commenced and to enhance its reputation as a tourism and business travel hub further in the future? CC: Our priority over the past three years has been sustainable tourism development and we will continue to preach that over the course of 2018. It is very important for our Pacific Island members and communities to embrace the tourism sector as the source of their livelihoods, and in so doing, understand the importance of sustainable tourism. Our islands are our assets and our environments (both land and sea) are our greatest tourist attractions. We have conducted awareness training in our member countries that teach communities, public and private sectors the concept of sustainable tourism development and its importance to our daily lives. In 2017, we also began reaching out to hotels and

A

accommodation providers through consultation workshops as well, with the objective of teaching them to monitor, measure, report on and address critical barriers to improving sustainable consumption and production in the tourism industry. The feedback has been very encouraging and we will continue the sustainable consumption and production programme this year. This will surely assist the sustainability of hotels so they are able to continue providing quality service to their guests with minimal cost to the environment. AsO: Finally, looking forward, what progress and development would you hope and expect to be able to report back in the future; both in regards to the South Pacific Tourism Organisation as an entity, and in regards to the business travel industry in the South Pacific as a whole? CC: For SPTO as an entity: an increase in its government membership base; an increase in donors/development partners; an increase in private sector members; an expansion of work programmes and activities implemented in member governments; and an increase in staffing for programme implementation. For the travel industry: sustainable tourism policies and practices enforced and introduced across member governments; an increase in air links and inter-island connectivity; aviation infrastructure available in countries that are in dire need of them; strengthened efforts in waste management and conservation; maximised synergies between renewable energy and energy efficiency in the region; and culinary tourism as an attraction for tourists (Pacific cuisine as a brand).

As a sub-set of agro-tourism, once again numerous partnerships have been set up across Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea to both improve levels of agricultural production, and then to apply the fruits of said labours across a more refined food & drink industry.

'The emphasis on new products is similarly improving the overall offering to prospective business travellers... from bird watching, diving, whale watching and island tours, to weddings, honeymoons and exclusive resort experiences'

“Our work programme in this area encourages the use of local resources in local cuisine and menus of our hotels,” Cocker details. “This not only encourages import substitution but also positions our hotels as a ‘source market’ for our farmers. We have been in Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu from 2015 undertaking this mentioned programme and we will continue with other countries in the Pacific in 2018.” The emphasis on new products is similarly improving the overall offering to prospective business travellers and tourists, facilitating everything from bird

Cocker continues: “To experience our culture these are the kinds of attractions we have always had, however, they were under-developed and not properly maintained for tourists to enjoy them and return to our shores for a repeat holiday indulging in the same.” The situation is a whole lot different now though, and in reaction to such opportunities, sectors including hospitality, food & drink, art, history and culture have all begun to capitalise.

or almost 30 years TNB Repair And Maintenance Sdn.Bhd. (TNB REMACO) has differentiated itself as a one-stop provider of not just power plant repair and maintenance (R&M) services, but entire lifecycle-focused solutions; and with the backing of its parent organisation, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), it is now looking towards international growth as well as remit growth. The aforementioned TNB Group is the largest electricity utility in Malaysia and the key contributor to nation building. That being said, TNB REMACO, since 1995, has thrived as an independent, autonomous subsidiary in order to accumulate one of the most impressive track records in the regional energy sector. “Over the years, TNB REMACO has accumulated a proven track record in the industry across power plant repair and maintenance, as well as through the provision of holistic solutions in every aspect of power plants’ operation and maintenance (O&M),” affirms and introduces the Company’s Managing Director (MD), Anuar Yusoff. “Additional to TNB REMACO’s extensive track record and accomplishments within Malaysia, the Company has also made inroads into the international arena and has already gained a foothold in overseas markets including Southeast Asia, Kuwait, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.” TNB REMACO’s appeal on the international scene, and indeed its domestic prevalence over the years, derives from the comprehensive, turnkey nature of its service remit. Encompassing all strands of solution required within the industry, the Company has become the go-to advisor and provider regarding areas of maintenance services, repair services, test and diagnostic services, project and operation management services, and project and engineering services.

As TNB REMACO’s scope and reach increases, so too does the Company’s internal acumen, and it looks to keep ahead of its own growth by making sure that its structure is as strong as possible. Inevitably this begins most aptly with the Company’s workforce, and in recent years, the business has reignited an emphasis on hiring and retaining the best possible talents to

Managing an ever-expanding supply chain is no mean feat, but with the help of partnerships with ISPs across procurement and logistics, the business ensures the best possible materials for its clients. And it is this level of allencompassing consideration and operational excellence that Anuar believes will help drive the Company’s far-reaching ambitions in the years to come. He concludes: “Over the next five years, TNB REMACO will become a prominent EPC company for the region, all the while maintaining our core strength in O&M and repair and maintenance services for the utility and oil & gas industries. “From there, we will also spread our wings into the renewable energy segment in the local market.”

ver the past two years Envac Singapore has grown tremendously across nearly all KPIs as it edges nearer towards its goal of a tech-based waste solution revolution in the city state. Increasing its business volume, its market demographic and its market share, the Company continues to align itself to the Singapore Building and

Construction Authority’s green buildings initiative; a drive which aims to see 80 percent of the country’s buildings certified as green by 2030. Recently penetrating the healthcare and public housing markets, Envac Singapore’s ever-expanding remit, portfolio and footprint is set to unlock new strategic growth opportunities and innovative waste management solutions in the “tech capital of Asia”. “Over the past two years we have been focusing on the quality delivery of systems with high safety standards,” explains Tan Chin Tiong, the Company’s Vice President for Asia Pacific. “A favourable construction outlook and Government regulations will further increase our business potential to this end, while we are also investing in our most critical success factor, our human capital.

ASIA “Strategically we are also now starting to look into operations in some other Asian countries who are keenly following our progress in Singapore and who are now looking to adopt such technologies.” These automated waste management technologies and systems are not only catching the eyes of suitors further afield but are becoming stronger and smarter each year. As such, the Company’s system is developing smarter features so as to be integrated within the country’s “Smart Nation” initiative. “By adopting the smart cities model, we can track the amount of waste collection, we are able to introduce features to increase the rate of recycling, track energy consumption and monitor the whole waste flow,” Tan explained back in 2016.

These solutions are used globally to benefit human health, increase performance and reduce energy consumption in a wide range of air filtration applications. Our 27 manufacturing plants, six R&D sites, local sales offices and 4,000 employees provide service and support to our customers around the world. Camfil is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. It is now widely acknowledged that air conditioning filters can be considered ordinary industrial waste, whereas filters used in environments containing potentially hazardous products such as from clean rooms, spray booths and operating theatres should be considered special industrial waste and must be disposed of by an approved route using accredited systems.

And with increased revenue, an enlarged workforce, a broader geographic footprint, and new operational sectors, Envac Singapore is now in a better position than ever to showcase such innovations.

Since establishment in Singapore in 1992, Envac has built a solid reputation as one of the early pioneers of automated refuse collection systems (ARCS) for waste, street litter and soiled hospital linen. A fully-owned subsidiary of the wider Envac AB Group - a strong player in the industry since 1961 – Envac’s Singapore operations have adapted to the local Government’s more recent drive to push for smarter and more sustainable methods of energy saving and waste efficiency. “When we started out, the technology surrounding waste management was the limiting factor in the country. waste management industry more attractive to and understood by the younger generation. And even more impressively, it signifies how far the Company has come since its solution was introduced to replace the previous waste disposal system that had been in place since 1989. “Envac’s technology has been an alternative to the old refuse collection system, promising to create a better quality living environment for all,” said Tan. “The system transports waste through a Pneumatic Waste Conveyance System (PWCS), using a vacuum-type underground pipe network to collect household waste, which is then transported through underground pipes to a sealed container. Trucks then periodically collect the waste from this central location for disposal. The entire waste collection process is automated - we can start, stop and identify issues through a computer system, even

remotely through our smartphones via an app - thereby reducing manpower requirements and increasing productivity.” Since then, projects have escalated on an annual basis, as have Envac’s innovative advancements. The latest technological improvements to come to the fore include the upgrade of strategic user interface technologies, as well as an integrative system for data collection and analysis in order to ensure even more refined improvements in the years to come too. “The integrated data processing system allows for our waste management system to be monitored at all times, in alignment with a smart hub centre for the estate,” Tan details. “Such innovations and continuous improvement will further Envac’s, and Singapore’s, cause as its system gradually becomes the standard infrastructure for all the country’s developments.”

Such rapid growth is testament not only to Fenestra Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s expertise on the subject of façades but the levels of innovation displayed across numerous high profile projects within the domain.

“We, in collaboration with our global associates, are able to offer our services in the design of advanced envelopes such as double skin façades and automated shading devices. We draw on the innovative application of standard technology to optimise and improve the performance of the building as a whole.” Particularly renowned for its influence on structural and sustainable design - as well as the interface of building services and façades Fenestra’s façade portfolio ventures further into construction management and forensics too. While the former serves as a value-add assurance to sub-contractors, technicians and construction operators, the latter contributes to inspections for a range of purposes including: compliance with construction documentation; due diligence reports; emergency assessment of risk to public safety; cause and source of water leaks; general condition of cladding materials and systems; assessment of remaining service life; and materials assessment. The final strand of Fenestra’s façade management service remit then glances ahead to skills development and the wider upliftment of an industry very much in bloom. “[Training-wise], Fenestra organises awareness workshops on sustainable design, the retrofitting of existing buildings, and building services commissioning as part of our commitment to developing sustainable knowledge in the building industry and all parties interested in the built environment,” the Company explains. “Our dynamic, engaging and relevant sessions provide practical information and the knowledge base required to undertake real projects in confidence. “Our experiences as consultants provide the real-life perspectives, stories, lessons learned and knowledge that are the backbone to our education and training.”

oasting more than a century of experience in the architectural coating industry, Beckers Group has established an almost unrivalled footing in the sector courtesy of 24 manufacturing sites, numerous satellite offices, and corporate headquarters’ in no less than 19 countries. Two additional long-term development (LTD) laboratories to help the Group focus on the market’s stringent demands for innovation, efficiency and environmental sustainability compound this influence even further, and pave the way for Becker Industrial Coatings to produce “lasting beauty beyond the surface” across its products. The first and foremost consideration has always been durability; the Company’s BeckryFluor brand demonstrating such an advantage consistently and reputably. “Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVdF) has a molecular structure that is stable and resistant to thermal, chemical and ultraviolet light attacks; and BeckryFluor is the leading brand of PVdF coatings,” the business explains. “Comprising Kynar 500 or Hylar 5000 brands of PVdF resin combined with selected inorganic pigments - proprietarily formulated by Beckers Group - this advanced formulation ensures and maintains colour retention of metal finishes even in extreme climatic conditions.” BeckryFluor is applied via spraying or coil coating on metal fabricators such as aluminium extrusions, solid panels, window and door frames, metal roofing, aluminium composite panels, ceilings, and louvres. And in each and every case Beckers demands the most stringent requirements in the evaluation and selection of spray applicators and coil coaters; not only to ensure that standards are maintained, but to also

guarantee that beauty is maintained too. The Company continues: “BeckryFluor is resistant to most atmospheric pollutants, industrial stains and corrosive elements. It is moisture-resistant; repels fungus, mildew and dirt stains; and is resistant to abrasion and impact, hence providing the ability to withstand mechanical wear and tear. With its excellent performance, BeckryFluor is a low maintenance coating that preserves the condition of the building at an affordable cost.” Again compounding aspects of sustainability and longevity in order to achieve ultimate value for money, buildings around the world still grace the same BeckryFlour coating that was applied years before, with very little noticeable change to the colour or quality. “BeckryFluor possesses outstanding protective properties and can withstand chemical attacks, making them highly resistant to corrosion,” Becker Industrial Coatings adds. “Its proprietary coating system incorporates a corrosion inhibitive primer layer... and BeckryFluor constantly undergoes extensive real-life field tests, where it is exposed to the environment near coastal areas, deserts, industrial and residential sites for long periods.” Such stringent testing is applied both from a variable perspective and a geographic point of view, ultimately ensuring that “BeckryFluor is able to consistently survive harsh weather and maintain its colours and gloss through the years, providing aesthetic appeal and protection to buildings in all climates and conditions around the world”.

relationships are compounded by the Company’s lifecycle-tailored postoccupancy evaluations. Fenestra continues on its website: “These evaluations focus on the people who inhabit the facility, to reveal how the occupants feel about the facility or to give an idea of how the work environment affects their productivity. Given that the relative value of the average employee costs, versus utility costs are more than 100 times, having comfortable and productive employees and building occupants could add more to the bottom line than reductions in energy costs.”

Naturally, expanding the Company and its services at such an exponential rate requires an equally prevalent adherence to the latest industry trends in order for such expansion to be successful.

To this end, much of Fenestra’s focus in recent years has been not just on service enhancement but on the technologies being used to refine said services. “Utilising the latest in simulation technology, Fenestra’s sustainability consultants can trial and demonstrate the effectiveness of different design options for building systems and internal/external features to determine how they impact on both the running costs of a building and the comfort of the building’s inhabitants,” the Company says. “This is most effective when analysis and modelling is incorporated right from the earliest

riven by a commitment to deliver total construction solutions, Euro Façade Tech has enjoyed double digit growth for each of the past four years, and with 2018 already alluding to this trend continuing, clients’ expectations similarly continue to be exceeded. Established in May, 2012 the meteoric rise up the industry ranks that has occurred over the following half-decade has derived from the Company’s turnkey capabilities which comprise the design, supply and installation of high quality, innovative, customised, architectural façades. “From the backing of the former Vice Chairman of Permasteelisa Group, Mr Lucio Mafessanti, Euro Façade Tech essentially brings an international and local expertise that prides itself on adding significant value to clients’ expectations,” introduces and affirms Executive Director for Euro Façade Tech, Ted Graban. “From humble

beginnings, our factory has grown from a single facility producing 15,000 square metres per annum, to currently having three facilities producing more than 100,000 square metres each year. And we are currently making plans for this year to significantly increase this capacity.” The accomplishment of providing ‘total construction solutions’ in Euro Façade Tech’s case encapsulates design and engineering acumen, project management, manufacturing and production capabilities, quality assessment and quality control facilitation, and interior fit-outs. Consequently, the Company is able to address each significant stage of a construction project through its façade service remit, but in a way that takes into account the wider long-term considerations of the wider build. Operations and Production Director, Stephen Matula picks up: “We work on projects from concept to completion, often interacting with clients,

architects and consultants during the early phase of the design process to ensure that each project is reviewed holistically in order to provide the best possible value-added solutions for the benefit of the project.” Strategically situated in Peninsula Malaysia, Euro Façade Tech’s accessibility from a project, supply chain and infrastructural perspective to the wider APAC region is no coincidence and has largely facilitated the Company’s Southeast Asian growth over the past five years. And now, with Malaysian and Australian markets in particular alert to the benefits that Euro Façade Tech can bring; the Company can look towards even more concerted growth into AsiaPacific in the future.

Project portfolio

The amount of repeat clients and repeat contracts is testament both to Euro Façade Tech’s international growth and its rapidly-attained positive Exchange 106 Tower

reputation. And its project portfolio only compounds this reality further. “The highlight so far in showcasing Euro Façade Tech’s expertise is the success of Exchange 106 Tower, which is currently Southeast Asia’s tallest building at 492 metres,” Matula enthuses. “Another of our key projects is the J-Land Tower in Johor Bahru, which is a geometrically complex façade, consisting of ‘cold-warp’ prefabricated units, combined with trapezoidal Z-shaped corners, which were designed with the aid of our inhouse 3D modelling experts.” The Company’s current project portfolio persists in a similar fashion: in Australia via the high-end six-star Capitol Grand property in Melbourne, the U-City project in Adelaide, and 151 Clarence Street in Sydney; and in Papua New Guinea courtesy of APEC Haus which is the purpose-built convention centre set to host this year’s APEC Summit.

And across each and every high profile contract, Euro Façade Tech applies its vision of innovation and technological modernity to help realise clients’ own visions. To this end, the Company has invested heavily across recruitment to ensure that expertise and innovation are firmly ingrained into the business structure, to keep ahead of the industry curve, and to facilitate its own project portfolio growth. Matula continues: “Specific areas that we have targeted are what we see as the future trends and directions in the façades of buildings. For example, there appears to be a direction towards more complex shapes in buildings, requiring the expertise of wire framed 3D modelling from design through to production in order to efficiently address such complexities. Having the right people and software to do this is essential.” Graban adds: “On the other hand, we see a direction where buildings

these days are being reviewed holistically, starting from the facades’ performance and the significant effect they have on a building’s life in terms of energy efficiency, human comfort, and providing visual transparency. As a result, we have been developing what we describe as a “Dry Double Skin” façade system (DDS) which comprises highly transparent curtain wall units with an internal blind system that tracks the sun’s movement so that during the peak solar loads, such blinds will come into effect.” The result enables clients to downsize their HVAC systems and to ultimately save energy for the end building user. And behind every one of Euro Façade Tech’s innovative solutions is an equally pivotal facility upgrade, equipment investment or software enhancement. “In addition to our investment in the latest 3D software, we have invested in new CNC cutting machinery that will enable the cutting of customised

Technical expertise continues to be a key point of difference

“good buildings come from good people, and all problems are avoided by good design”. Resultantly, “Euro Façade Tech prides itself on ongoing solution services”, the statement continues. “Our engineers utilise the industry’s most cutting edge 2D and 3D modelling and mapping software. This enables us to meticulously plan for our projects, and eliminate any margins for errors.”

Second to none

Research & development innovations complement such internal astuteness with the assistance of numerous third party global partners located around the world; providing Euro Façade Tech access to laboratories and test centres in some of the world’s most elite facilities. That being said, the majority of the Company’s critical partnerships are every bit as locally focused as its workforce; once again virtue of its strategic positioning. “Our headquarters in Peninsula

Malaysia are in proximity to a plethora of internationally-renowned suppliers, ports and infrastructure,” Graban details. “Our local supply chains are an integral part of our success which has been built upon great relationships and reliable performance, as needed.” The dedication to localisation even emanates outside of Euro Façade Tech’s core business activities and into the wider communities via extensive corporate social responsibility efforts. And in fostering such a positive influence in the region, the Company will continue to be trusted with some of APAC’s most significant projects through what it does best in the future. “We believe our point of difference is that with our technical expertise, we are able to influence clients, architects and consultants’ decisions during the early design process such that the project ultimately benefits,” Matula says. “We believe we add value to clients’ expectations while being cost effective. In other words, clients get so much more for their dollar. Our key staff experience is second to none in this field and our success is measured by our repeated business with loyal clients.” The MD adds and concludes: “From here, we would hope and expect to continue on the exponential growth that we have experienced over the initial five years of operation. Additionally, we are making plans to establish a new integrated modern facility that will cope with the expected demands for future works. “Our goal is to be a major player in the curtain wall market within the Southeast Asian and Australasian region.”

ASIA ccess World Logistics has a long and illustrious history, beginning more than 80 years ago in Italy back in 1933. Initiating as a family-owned entity, the business quickly outgrew its roots and was eventually taken over by Glencore in 2010, when it went on to become Pacorini Metals. The Company is renowned for providing world-class global logistics and warehousing solutions for customers, all of which is achieved through building long-term relationships with clients and service providers alike. “Since that point in time the Company has been expanding its footprint across Asia, now with a presence in China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and India,” explains Gan Wan Pin, Managing Director at Access World Logistics Asia Pacific. “In 2016 we reinvented ourselves in order to become Access World Logistics, one of the main reasons being that we had outgrown purely operating within the metal business. “Pacorini Metals soon became a misleading name for the direction that we were hoping to travel in, now working with commodities such as agriculture and oil & gas.” In the many years since Access World Logistics came to fruition, it has experienced great success particularly within Asian markets - with thanks to its quality service, adaptability and in-depth sector knowledge. This success is now strengthening in the new markets that the Company is branching into; a sign of good things to come in the future.

ormosa Logistics Corp was established in 2004 in response to customer demand for international logistics. Upholding to the philosophy of “integrity, practical and sustainable”, the Company has warehouse locations in the Kaohsiung and Nanxing Free Trade Zones, which comprehensively integrates the needs for warehousing logistics and port operations related to warehouse, transport, loading/ unloading, customs declaration, and vessel operations.

Gan Wan Pin, Managing Director, Access World Logistics Asia Pacific

“For companies like “traditional logistics companies - a recognisable logistics group - it needs to be able to handle fast moving customer needs on a huge scale, therefore the key to success lies within achieving standardisation,” continues Wan Pin. “However, for a company such as ourselves, with one leg in the finance-trading sector and one in logistics, we have to be more adaptable to varying requirements. “Especially due to the fact that the finance world changes at an incredibly fast pace, including the way people trade, the pricing and everything else that we need to adapt our business to fit on a regular basis.” The Company has seamlessly filled a gap in the market that large companies like “traditional logistics companies cannot reach, all thanks to in-depth sector knowledge and an understanding of the finance commodity market. “We understand how traders undertake their trade and we see

ourselves as a physical platform from which they can execute the aforementioned trade,” affirms Wan Pin. “Our knowledge for each product that we work with, such as coffee, cocoa and base metals is an extremely important aspect of what we do and what has made us successful over the years.” When it comes to utilising this knowledge, the Company has a stringent process in gaining key contracts which includes adherence to strict compliance laws and an ethical way of conducting business. “We have occasionally walked away from projects where the profit was very attractive, but we felt there were a few aspects that didn’t add up and fit within our processes,” explains Wan Pin. “It is important to us to move with integrity at all times and in all aspects of business. “Over time we have built a positive reputation as a result of those actions, and we continue to employ due diligence so that we always know

JEFFREY SIM

Head of Operations, Asia Pacific The senior management team within Access World Logistics has played a vital role in ensuring steady development of the Company and its employees. Jeffrey Sim, Head of Operations, Asia Pacific at Access World Logistics delves into the changes being made to meet the everchanging market requirements. Asia Outlook (AsO): In recent years, what challenges have you found in having to adapt to the ever-changing needs of your target markets? Jeffrey Sim (JS): I would classify the challenges in three baskets: namely regulatory compliance, operation excellence, and technology adoption. The tightening of regulatory requirements around the world in recent years led to frequent reviews of our operational setup and processes. Our standardisation

efforts were constantly challenged as the market requirements have changed. In my opinion, the early adopters of new technology will bear the capital burden to lead the charge to revolutionise the industry, but they will also be the ones to capture the bigger market share and establish themselves as the market leader. AsO: How would you say your role has changed and evolved since you started working with the Company? JS: In a nutshell, my role in Access World started with fighting

AsO: What plans do you have in store for 2018? JS: There are three key themes: system deployment, efficiency drive, and internal development. Access World has been gradually implementing our new finance and ERP system globally, and multiple improvement initiatives are planned in 2018 to target efficiency improvements on both ground operations and administrative processes. Together with the management team and HR department, we are putting together a specialist development training plan to ensure that our younger workers are being trained to take on leadership roles in the future.

Employees that perform well are given opportunities within the Company

“Due to the fact that we work in such a niche industry, we cannot afford to have people dropping in and out of the Company,” Wan Pin states. “We will provide a lot of opportunities for our staff during their time with us; for example, those that perform well are given the chance to move to different countries within the wider Group in order to gain further experience. “We have a systematic way of training that ensures flexibility within departments; this is something that we have come up with in attempts to better meet the needs of the younger generation that we are working with.”
