W E L C O M E Breathing Easy Asia-Pacific has long been lauded as a profitable arena in which to conduct business, with foreign direct investment and localised success stories apparent in equal measure over the past decade or so. The secret behind its success as a whole has derived largely from the balance between established and emerging markets, enabling the region to offset certain fluctuations and to capitalise on those industries enjoying their peaks. At present though, it seems that both worlds have collided to form a perfect storm for businesses looking to capitalise on the resource-rich, often futuristic and increasingly accessible continent. In the emerging corner, Papua New Guinea has been an ever-present in Asia Outlook of late, and this trend continues via Wild Cat Developments and Crater Gold Mining this month; while the even more up-and-coming Myanmar is covered via an interview with telecoms pioneer, Ooredoo Myanmar. Meanwhile, among the more established elite, Megatone Electronics Corp represents the tech haven of Taiwan, while we also analyse Toshiba’s role in Vietnam’s energy sector, the Big 5 Construct event in Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur’s appeal as a business travel destination. Overseeing them all is our lead feature this month in the form of global air filtration specialists, Camfil Asia Pacific. Urging everyone to “take a breath”, the business’s presence across nine APAC countries is set to grow in the immediate future as it looks to fulfil its mission of making clean air as much of a human right as clean water. Finally, with the Rio De Janeiro Olympics still fresh in the memory of sports fans around the world, one city that couldn’t afford to sit back and soak up the entertainment was Tokyo; who face the exciting - yet daunting - prospect of hosting the Games four years from now. We count down the top 10 lessons that Japan’s capital can take from Rio to ensure the event reaches the same standards set by not just Rio, but its Asian counterpart, Matthew Staff Beijing back in 2008. SAP to Improve One Billion Lives in Asia-Pacific by 2020 The leading enterprise application software Company has invested €800,000, and more than 12,400 man hours to employ the power of SAP technology in areas of health and disaster management

SAP Asia Pacific Japan (APJ) has announced the winning ventures of One Billion Lives (1B Lives) – a crowdsourced, ground-up, APJ-wide initiative employing the power of SAP technology to deliver a sustainable, commercially-viable social impact. With each winning team receiving seed money of €200,000, executive support and a start-up accelerator with industry experts; 1B Lives

8

aims to improve the lives of one billion people across the APJ region in the areas of health and disaster management by the year 2020. SAP APJ also invested €200,000 in the overall programme management which includes the setting up of a robust process to crowdsource ideas from employees, as well as enable employee voting to shortlist the best ideas based on their likelihood of success in terms of

feasibility, scalability and ease of implementation. The initiative garnered more than 170 submissions from across all offices in the region with more than 5,200 employee votes cast to the shortlist. Three ventures from SAP India, Philippines and Japan were selected after a rigorous review and selection where the venture teams pitched their business ideas to secure support and funding. Adaire Fox-Martin, President, SAP Asia Pacific Japan said: “Many of us are deeply passionate about giving back to the communities we serve. 1B Lives provides the platform, funding, infrastructure and time to turn a great idea for social impact into a reality. This not only creates shared value and a unifying purpose to engage our employees, but also showcases the power of SAP in making real our vision of helping the world run better and commitment to improving people’s lives.” Mr Paul Kewene-Hite from INSEAD commented: “1B Lives is unique in putting in place a programme to fund internal start-ups that could have meaningful if not profound social impact. The final teams have very diverse objectives but what they all have in common is that they are all very passionate and driven to do something to improve millions of lives. 1B Lives is a testament that corporations like SAP can impact the lives of people and the communities in which it operates.” “I am immensely proud of what the teams have achieved in just three months,” said Adaire Fox-Martin, President, SAP Asia Pacific Japan. “1B Lives is a combination of the best SAP has to offer; our values, innovative culture, thought leadership in rallying an ecosystem and mindset that together, we can deliver on a better Asia Pacific Japan for tomorrow.”

Indonesia’s Construction Sector Calls for Competence The Indonesian Government’s focus on accelerating infrastructure development in all parts of Indonesia, as declared by President Joko Widodo, has pushed growth of the construction sector. According to the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), as Government and private sector infrastructure projects escalate, the construction sector is forecast to grow by 8.1 percent in 2017. This condition is expected to boost investment that will drive growth in related industries, create jobs and absorb labour. One of the major impacts of the construction sector growth is the increasing demand for construction services companies and their workers. The Director

General of Construction Development at the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PWPH), Yusid Toyib stated: “Indonesia is facing a significant challenge in developing construction service businesses and providing skilled construction workers. Especially after the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community, the local construction service companies and their workers should be able to compete in providing high-quality work, both in Indonesia and abroad.” As the host of Konstruksi Indonesia in 2016, which this year will be colocated with The Big 5 Construct Indonesia 2016, the Ministry expects

companies from the construction industry to to get valuable insights on new equipment and best practices in the construction sector. “The Big 5 Construct Indonesia 2016 is tailored specifically to meet the needs of the local construction sector. Not only we will bring the best and latest products for the built environment from global manufacturers; the event will host a series of free-to-attend, practical workshops providing industry trends, tools, applications and techniques for the construction and infrastructure sectors in Indonesia,” said Ashley Roberts, Event Director, dmg events.

annual spend on overseas travel per Singapore household is projected to hit US$30,230 by 2025, almost six times the Asia-Pacific household average of US$5,230 and the global household average of US$5,309. In Asia Pacific, households in China (US$255 billion), Hong Kong (US$47.4 billion) and Singapore (US$44.9 billion) are likely to be the top markets with the largest outbound travel spend. However, emerging markets; Indonesia (211 percent), Vietnam

(132 percent) and India (101 percent) are likely to experience the sharpest increases in spending. “Travel continues to be a staple activity amongst Singaporeans. The increasing popularity of online travel portals and mobile travel apps, coupled with more convenient and secure electronic payment options, will allow travelers to book their next travel destination with greater ease and lead to continued growth in international travel,” Ooi Huey Tyng, Visa Country Manager for Singapore and Brunei, said. “Visa continues to work with our partners to ensure that consumers enjoy the convenience and reliability of electronic payments when travelling and we expect to see even more Singaporean travelers heading abroad every year.”

Fusionex GIANT to be Incorporated into APU Syllabus Fusionex, a multi-award-winning, leading software solutions provider specialising in big data analytics (BDA) and Internet of Things (IoT), recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), to provide APU students with access to knowledge on software expertise that are crucial for the Big Data industry. More than a third of organisations in Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) are entering a more advanced stage of data analytics as compared to only seven percent in 2014. “This shows that interest and market demand for big data analytics has multiplied in the past two years. However, while the industry is growing rapidly, there’s a serious lack of talent available in the data industry. And that is hampering its growth,” KM Chen, Vice President of Fusionex said. Professor Ron Edwards, Vice Chancellor of APU adds: “There is a great shortage of talent in the field of data analytics. To address the talent shortage, APU has developed programmes in data analytics... to create a substantial pipeline of talent for Malaysia in the years to come.”

Tokyo 2020: 10 Lessons to Take from the Rio Olympics Four years is likely to go very quickly for the organisers of the next Olympic Games, but if they can get the following flashpoints sussed, then the flamboyance and success of the city and event should speak for themselves

1 Make sure the superstars are comfortable

Once all the planning, constructing, investing and honing has been completed, the first test in terms of feedback will come from the athletes themselves as they enter the bizarre parallel world of sporting prowess known as the Olympic Village. As Delhi from the last Commonwealth Games, and Rio themselves, will tell you; introducing them to anything but five-star comfort is likely to result in a back-page news story comprising a picture of a toilet. A no-news-isgood-news barometer should be strived for by Tokyo when they face that same heart in mouth moment in four years time.

Nobody enjoys traffic jams

In the hierarchy of importance, just below the athletes come the spectators who will descend on the city from around the globe. Inevitably, Tokyo’s public transport and highways will come under more scrutiny than ever before in the odd expectation that the area should be prepared for such an outrageous saturation of people. Such are the burdens of hosting an Olympics though, and while it will be impossible to appease some of Tokyo’s - for a short while, trapped - residents; for just this month, it is the tourists that will have to be put first.

Safety first

3 Strive for sustainability gold

When it comes to building a sustainable Olympics, silver simply won’t do. As London and Rio have found, the pressures on making the event look like value for money is a fruitless task, but can be alleviated by adopting the right processes in the build up to the Games, and in partnering with the right - ethically sound - companies from a sponsorship perspective. “Each one [Olympics] will get better because at the end of the day, in terms of its impact on sustainability and supply chains, the general consensus now is that we’re destroying the planet and we need to do something to reverse that trend,” said Crimson & Co’s General Manager of Latin America, Richard Gurney.

Perhaps this goes without saying, and this certainly wasn’t a trend overlooked by Rio this summer, but security is paramount. Inevitably, an event of such magnitude is dressed up as a prospective target and danger area for its duration, and making spectators, athletes, the media and indeed Tokyo’s inhabitants feel safe throughout is something that needs to be enforced both audibly and visibly. Ultimately, on this front, its success can only be gauged once the Games have been completed unscathed, but saying and implementing the right things prior to the Opening Ceremony is half the battle.

6 There’s a price to pay

Rio’s opening ceremony was well attended

5 Bums on seats

Arguably Rio’s biggest shortfall was depicted - daily - by snapshots of stadia often devoid of people. Beijing posed beautifully for every picture and London truly bought into the Olympic spirit from day one, but Tokyo will have to avoid the negative connotations attached with Rio’s empty seats in order to push through the message of united success and internal approval.

One way to ensure consistently full stadiums across all sports over the course of the two weeks is to make them affordable. Obviously this is all relative, and while Rio might not have priced their tickets any more harshly than its predecessors, it still wasn’t proportionate to the disposable income available to much of the city’s population. Tokyo might not have to endure the same challenge to such an extent, but pricing their events sensibly will certainly have an impact on the perceived popularity of the event from a spectator point of view.

7 Communication is key

One inevitable challenge stems from the beauty of internationalism that engulfs an Olympic Games. With so many languages, cultures, outlooks and interests descending on one city in such a short space of time, communication from the Games’ authorities becomes an almost thankless mission at the time, but a lauded achievement afterwards if carried out successfully. Both London’s and Rio’s volunteers and organisers received great acclaim in the way they handled the droves of people around each stadium, and Tokyo will need to do the same to ensure positive customer feedback upon each visitor’s return home.

9 Don’t make the media your enemy

8 Green swimming pools don’t go unnoticed

Perhaps another one for the ‘this goes without saying’ column but ensuring that the actual sporting facilities are up to scratch is a given that often catches Olympic hosts unaware each Games. Awkward mistakes with national flags or anthems are an embarrassing - and sometimes dangerous - occurrence, while a green swimming pool simply won’t go unnoticed by unnerved divers.

Any negatives being reported back to onlooking nations will be done so by, you guessed it... reporters. Putting the outside perception of your Games in the hands of a select few isn’t ideal but it is the way of things, and the media giveth and taketh away depending on the success or failure of each of the aforementioned touch points. For Rio, they went one step further in actually rubbing the press room up the wrong way, with many journalists and broadcasters left without sufficient food options for large portions of their time there. In short, keep them fed and happy, and the odd green swimming pool might be portrayed as ‘humorous’ rather than a ‘logistical disaster’.

10

Create a legacy

Not to sound too cliché, but ever since Athens, the idea of ‘legacy’ and the expectation on Olympic host cities to build a Games armed with long-term positive ramifications has become a deal breaker in not only being seen as a successful event, but in even being awarded the opportunity to begin with. London’s reputation is still intrinsically linked to this idea of legacy four years on, as the Village continues to be moulded into a new-look capital hub for housing, leisure and industry. Between now and Tokyo, the same judgements will be cast over Rio’s post-Games initiatives, and the concept will have only intensified by the time the closing ceremony pulls the curtains on 2020’s festival of sport.

Toshiba Gives Vietnam a

Head of

Steam Singapore’s growing role as an ‘innovation hotbed’ is being compounded by the financial behemoth’s decision to introduce its first regional innovation centre in the city state Writer: Matthew Staff

Y

ollowing the announcement earlier in the year that Toshiba Corporation had received an order to supply steam turbines and generators for the extension of Vinh Tan 4 coal-fired thermal power plant in Vietnam, the significance of both the industry topic and the Company’s role in the region was brought to the fore. Ordered by Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd of South Korea, the works which will begin in 2018 and open up in 2019 fit into a much wider commitment that the global heavyweight maintains within the Asia-Pacific domain; as well as a dedication to making said region as energy efficient and sustainable as possible. Asia Outlook was fortunate enough to speak with Mr Takao Konishi, Vice President of Thermal & Hydro Power Systems & Services Division for the Energy Systems & Solutions Company within the Toshiba Corporation to analyse both facets of this strategy; and the state-owned Vietnam Electricity project itself. Asia Outlook (AsO): Can you firstly briefly introduce me to Toshiba in the Asia-Pacific region, and how it is evolving in-line with the wider Company’s global expansion strategy from an energy perspective? Takao Konishi (TK): Toshiba has been contributing solutions to the Asia-Pacific region’s energy needs since the 1960s. In 1995, we established Toshiba Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. (TAPL) in Singapore as our AsiaPacific regional headquarters and TAPL oversees operations in Asia and Oceania, excluding Japan, China and Hong Kong. In March, 2016, Toshiba announced its business plan for fiscal year 2016, with an emphasis on businesses that

four hydraulic turbines for the Da Nhim Hydroelectric Power Station, in 1963. In Indonesia, including ongoing projects, Toshiba will supply 19 units of steam turbines and 33 units of hydraulic turbines, with a combined capacity of nearly 7,000MW. In the Philippines, Toshiba has supplied main power generating equipment and auxiliary units for thermal, hydro and geothermal power plants, and transformers and arresters for substation use; our first project in the Philippines was in 1965, the Agus VI hydro project, which is still running today. In the area of renewable energy, Toshiba has the world number one share in steam turbine generators for geothermal power plants - 23 percent based on operating plant capacity - and our adjustable-speed pumped storage system for hydro power plant is the world number one on the basis of the number of plants. Our line-up of hydro turbines and generators extends from systems from small streams to large rivers, from 1kW to 800MW. In the thermal power domain, we have 62 percent efficiency line-up in combined cycle systems, the world’s highest level. We are also working on the development of a 700oC class

investments in constructing roads, a high-speed rail line on the North-South route, and urban infrastructure in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Government aims to quickly develop electricity sources and complete a nationwide electricity net, along with the use of energysaving technologies, to guarantee the sufficient provision of electricity. Vietnam’s Power Development Plan envisions that Vietnam’s total power generating capacity is increased to 60,000MW by 2020 and to 129,500MW by 2030. Strong economic growth is straining Vietnam’s power generation capacity, with Southern Vietnam particularly susceptible to shortages; and so far, Toshiba has contributed to Vietnam’s energy needs through numerous hydro and coal-fired thermal power plant projects. AsO: What benefits does Toshiba’s STG bring to the Vinh Tan 4 power plant in regards to productivity, sustainability and other key parameters?

Y

TK: Today’s increasingly diverse societies require highly efficient power plants that are economical, easy to operate and offer large capacities. It is a challenging task to integrate the range of highly sophisticated technologies used in thermal power plants so that plants operate efficiently, economically and reliably under various operating conditions. In addition, continuous research and development of new technologies for future power plants is also required. As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of power plant systems, Toshiba is uniquely qualified to meet the power generation needs of today and tomorrow. We can provide excellent capabilities in system integration based on our long experience and many projects, and apply highly modularised technology to delivery. Electricity has been a vital component of industry and modernday societies since their foundation. Electricity is the cornerstone of society and industry, and thermal and hydro power plants must play an increasingly important role in meeting demand, in support of environmental safety. With the twin goals of ensuring reliable supply of electricity and protecting the environment, Toshiba is incorporating the latest in power plant and computer technologies into its systems, to ensure that society’s power requirements are met; reliably, safely, and economically. AsO: From this point, how do you foresee Toshiba’s role in Vietnam - and in influencing the energy sector - progressing in the future? TK: Vietnam is a strategic market for Toshiba’s thermal and hydro power systems business and we will continue to pursue suitable opportunities in the country where we can contribute - through energy solutions - not only equipment supply but also on a plant system basis, in addition to aftermarket services, in a timely manner.

Inbound & Industry 4.0:

A Global Recipe for Manufacturing s we accelerate further into this digital age, opportunities to reach and build trust with our customers is becoming more and more accessible, even for global entities with large and complex supply chains. The manufacturing industry is entering a digital revolution; Industry 4.0. Traditional production methods are now in the shadows of a digital transformation. But we’re not simply talking about adopting automation technologies to make value chains more efficient; this has been done

Joe Birkedale of Catalyst analyses how investments in R&D are critical to the performance of your manufacturing company, with the proof all too evident emanating out of Asia’s ‘Mighty Five’ Writer: Joe Birkedale, Managing Director, Catalyst

since the ‘70s. Industry 4.0 is seeing industrial companies becoming entire digital enterprises; utilising big data, reducing costs on product development and placing massive emphasis on customer integration.

Competition steepens

China has outflanked its competitors once again by ranking number one in Deloitte’s Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index 2016. Whilst traditionally seen as a low cost, high production nation, it’s now leaning towards the higher value products model, which executives simply could

see their competitiveness decline as they go up against the already advanced nations of Germany, Japan, the UK and US. However, Asia is still dominating the rankings list. In 2016 we saw the rise of the ‘Mighty Five’: The five AsiaPacific nations of Malaysia, India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam (MITI-V aka the ‘Mighty Five’). These countries are expected to penetrate the global manufacturing market at an accelerated rate with predictions they’ll be well within the top 15 nations on manufacturing competitiveness over the next five years. Due to the low labour costs, The Mighty Five is becoming an increasingly attractive manufacturing

destination. Anchored by China, Japan and South Korea, this AsiaPacific cluster is making waves with innovation and talent acquisition whilst still retaining cost effective ecosystems. What’s interesting however is that BRIC countries (excluding China) have declined in their overall competitiveness. Brazil and Russia have faced economic and political unrest over the past few years, leading to stagnation in business developments and commercial production. India, however, has recently been appointed a new Government which is set to improve its current competitiveness, with the initiatives ‘Make In India’ and ‘Skill India’ already predicted to take hold over the next five years.

To compete with the likes of Japan, US and China, who are already beginning to invest in advanced manufacturing, global manufacturers should look to harness an inbound marketing approach that supports the digital infrastructure that Industry 4.0 will bring. In doing so, they can expect to build deeper relationships with end users, offer a digital experience that aligns with the changes in buying behaviour and build ecosystems that connect people with organisations.

Data-driven research

Inbound marketing relies on data to merely exist, as it’s the compound to pretty much all operations. So when it comes to the industrial sector, it’s no different.

“Comprehensive data analytics are the prerequisite for successful implementation of digital enterprise applications.” - PwC 2016. Using big data is driving decisionmaking, presenting a more 360, holistic view of your entire market. Data can be analysed endlessly, however for an effective customer retention plan you need to be looking at the information that will enable you to make sense of market developments, study the shifts in buying behaviour and look into improving or expanding upon your product portfolio to reflect societal demands. The concept of being hyperconnected to people, devices and systems at all times plays into your marketing hands, in that you can

access customer data and analyse how they interact with your company and utilise your products. In providing the right products and technology, based on in-depth insight, customers are more likely to value your digital offerings and develop a trust in your brand.

Industrial generation

Manufacturers who begin to adopt the Industry 4.0 applications and action changes within their organisation to make it a viable business model will be creating strategies that are customercentric. Placing end users at the heart of value chains and R&D will essentially produce a more targeted offering that appeals to the evolving demands of

consumers. The shifts in how we consume content have arisen due to the advancement in technology such as the use of smartphones, which grew by 78 percent from 2013-2015. This market intelligence should be used to form cross-channel marketing communications that effectively reduce lead time and makes better use of distribution channels. For effective lead generation to occur within a manufacturing 4.0 environment, you need to implement digital platforms that foster a collaborative relationship, ensuring these platforms encourage increased interaction throughout all stages of the journey.

Investing in innovation

The shift towards higher value products and services is a global manufacturing trend that is only going to evolve and become more prevalent as a means to remain competitive. Through the connectivity of people, organisations, systems and policies, new ideas can be brought to life as commercially viable products. According to the Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index 2016, Japan, one of the original manufacturing powerhouses of the 20th Century, has been rated among the strongest global markets in terms of manufacturing innovation, proving that investments in R&D are critical to the performance of your manufacturing company.

Customer relationship management

Back in the days of Yore, marketing was a shameless ploy used to promote the company’s agenda and services without any thought behind the channel or platform they were using to connect to this wide, generic audience. However as aforementioned, a customer-centric approach means you can apply Industry 4.0 capabilities in response to cultural shifts and produce customised items. This customisation and personalisation is another paradigm shift towards a world where we’ll all

know each other’s names, average monthly heating bill and favourite roast dinner condiment. Customers want a unique experience, proving that businesses understand their individual pains and have taken the time to tailor marketing messages specific to what they need. Customer integration also gives room for marketers to not only respond to change, but anticipate it, developing bespoke digital products with agility. This has dual benefits; one in that it helps to retain customers, and the other in that it maximises your sales potential and adds to business growth.

Although the opportunities are evident, there’s still challenges. Growth marketing agency Catalyst has created an in-depth report into the state of UK manufacturing, detailing what you might face and how to prepare. Download it here for free: www.wearecatalyst.co.uk/stateof-manufacturing

Locally translated as ‘muddy confluence’, Kuala Lumpur’s role as one of the world’s ‘alpha cities’ has certainly stuck, as its blend of natural splendour, historic poignancy and contemporary aesthetics make it one of the most appealing global destinations Writer: Matthew Staff

Kuala Lumpur alaysia’s largest city, national capital and primary global lure forms the perfect setting for tourists and business executives alike as a consequence of a diversity which can take you down the most naturally eerie of caves one second, and up the most impressive of manmade towers, the next. Situated within and characterised by the surrounding Klang Valley, when one thinks of Malaysia, it's not disrespectful to assume they mean Kuala Lumpur, and this is forgivable considering the city’s role and responsibility within the nation. Boasting the largest of everything, the most populous of headcounts and the most renowned of businesses across all industries, KL’s leading role

has affirmed its position as an alpha world city, and the cultural, financial and economic centre of a country at the heart of Asian-Pacific development. For the visiting business traveller, some of these wider connotations and repercussions can be lost of course, but at eye level, the significance and magnitude of the city is every bit as striking. From the towering Petronas and Menara KL structures to the winding cultural offerings of the city’s Chinatowns and markets – and every world-renowned eatery and bar in-between – Kuala Lumpur really does have it all. And this includes the climate, infrastructure and modernity that are also ready, honed and waiting for the global elite to descend in their droves each year.

Facts and figures Transport links

And descend they do! As part of the appealing Asia-Pacific destination bucket list, Malaysia relies on its star attraction to greet and welcome all into the country, and it therefore has a transport array worthy of such a responsibility. Comprising the country’s most prominent dock, airport, public transport network and rail service; no stone has been left unturned in balancing western expectations with local nuances and efficiency. But like most Asian cities, moving around under your own steam along state-of-the-art roads is arguably the best - if not the most relaxing - mode of transport. Connecting the city to the rest of the Malaysian Peninsular, its highways might be busy but they’re extensive, and with so much to see outside of the boardroom during your limited stay, it’s perhaps advisable not to rely on timetabled methods. That being said, it’s not to say that KL’s rail network is sub-par. In fact, it represents a work in progress that is set to enjoy a landmark overhaul by the end of 2016 which will see the opening of two light metro extension lines as well as the introduction of new train lines in and out of the Klang Valley honey pot. He says: “The Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners (MAHO) was established in 1998 with members comprising companies which owned three, four and five-star hotels in the country. The objective and vision was to be the official representative for hotel owners with the Government addressing and taking care of relevant hotel owners' issues, taking care of the welfare of the hotel sector and hotel owners, as well as for networking and closer rapport. “MAHO has progressed and achieved very much in terms of membership and contribution to the industry. Of date, membership now stands at 94 members owning a total of 211 hotels. “Malaysia’s hospitality and tourism industry has progressed very much and made remarkable achievements over the years. Many and more highly rated hotels were built adding more and more rooms to the inventory. There are now two premier brand St. Regis hotels operating; one in Kuala Lumpur and another in Langkawi. In addition to the one in Langkawi which has been operating for a number of years, Four Seasons Place is under development in Kuala Lumpur; expected to be ready in 2017. Other luxury/premier brands will be operating soon including Banyan Tree Pavilion and Kempinski.

Located in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Merdeka Square literally translates as Independence Square and is host to the annual National Day Parade in the centre of the city. While the square itself is nothing spectacular - in fact, still largely reminiscent of its former guise as a cricket pitch - it also acts as the landmark and meeting place from which most of the city centre’s star attractions and activities emanate.

Camfil Asia Pacific is addressing the clash of two regional trends, as awareness of air pollution – mixed with the rise in industry – points prospective customers towards its globally successful innovations Writer: Matthew Staff | Project Manager: Tom Cullum amfil Asia Pacific’s role in making the region’s air safer and cleaner is becoming more prevalent with each passing year as awareness of the dangers that pollution can bring reach wider geographies and sector segments. Now reaching the consciousness of most of the world’s leading businesses, the challenge now is to infiltrate higher levels of understanding and education in order to sufficiently allay such fears; something which more than 50 years of experience in providing clean air solutions allows Camfil to fulfil. “It’s not just people but through things like diesel cars, air pollution is becoming one of the world’s major environmental problems, and in Asia, the problem is worse than in perhaps Europe or North and South America,” explains Dr Suresh Balan, the Company’s Executive Vice President for Asia-Pacific and

the Middle East. “To make matters worse, Europe has always been more aware of these issues and solutions, but now Asia is coming to realise it too, and that’s where our solutions come into it. “If you look at Asia, everyone has known about the need for clean water but the same challenge exists in terms of clean air so our focus is on growing in this region because that’s where the biggest problem is.” With larger infrastructure comes a higher volume of pollution, as well as an increased number of buildings, offices, and businesses seeking protection from said pollutants. And as a consequence, the demand for a series of solutions built to offset this concern has facilitated Camfil’s 10-year drive into the continent. Balan continues: “We now have a good footprint and we want to expand further. We have manufacturing sites in India, China and Malaysia as well as a presence

across Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, and we want to expand all over this region ultimately. “For the Group, it’s the biggest market and the most important; coming from the promise of more and more people searching for cleaner air solutions in their buildings.”

Raising awareness

The success behind Camfil’s business model not only derives from the influx of interest coming from the region, but from the saturation of industries from which this interest is emanating. Cutting across all industries - from pharmaceuticals and hospitals to semiconductor and oil & gas companies - the strive for clean air is universal, and so is Camfil’s appeal. “The Group started 53 years ago and in Asia roughly 10 years ago, and we are now in the right position to attack this market,” Balan states. “We have our operations footprint in nine countries, and a manufacturing footprint across three, and our highend premium products are catering for all industries.” As the subsequent “Rolls Royce” of the industry, its all-encompassing approach to the market, balanced with its innovative and entrepreneurial ethos in finding new solutions and product applications has formed a potent combination; compounded

instar (M) Sdn Bhd is a wholly owned Malaysian Company established in September, 2000. It was set up to serve up the engineering industries in Asia. We work with local and overseas consultants and leading contractors in construction, clean room, M & E works as well as office renovation. We also handle the design and build of different classes of clean room, and fulfill the total requirement of Federal Standard 209 for Airborne Particulate Cleanliness Classes in Clean Room and Clean Zones. In addition we undertake the mechanical & electrical engineering works ranging from power point or split unit air conditioning system to chiller air conditioning systems.

by an unrivalled knowledge of the pollutants being tackled. “It all comes down to education and a lot of education is going on in informing people about what we can offer and why we are offering it,” Balan says. “Take PM1 for instance. When we talk about clean air, we talk about different particles and PM1 particles are ultra fine which can go through your nostrils, into your lungs, and into your bloodstream. Previously, the knowledge was there about how to tackle the less fine PM2.5 particles, but not PM1. “Take diesel engines for example, they omit a lot of dangerous gases including PM1 particles and what we’ve done is build our products to move from combating just PM2.5 to PM1; the ultimate in stopping these particles getting into the bloodstream.” Inevitably, such dangers are more of an issue in some sectors than in others,

48

with the pharmaceutical, hospital and semiconductor domains especially required to keep harmful air particles down to not just a minimum, but zero. Camfil has therefore expended a lot of time and effort into raising awareness about not only the dangers, but more importantly, its solutions. “Solutions in these sectors are vital and we’ve presented our solutions to the International Green Building Council as well as these sectors to emphasise the fact that the awareness of clean air is more important than it was 10 years ago,” Balan emphasises. “10 years ago, a couple of people might have got a cough and nobody would worry, but if you brought up issues of clean water, then you’d get a reaction the very next day. “We are now seeing that people want to react earlier though with people as committed to getting clean air the very next day, the same as they would with clean water.”

As volumes increase, so to does the extent of investment in Camfil’s facilities

Optimum infrastructure

With the necessary solutions and expertise in tow, the next challenge for most businesses would be to actually fulfil its promise and infiltrate the entire market with its products. For Camfil however, the Company is able to leverage a global reputation and supplier network to make international, local and to ensure that Asia-Pacific remains an integral cog in the overall machine. From the business’s three manufacturing arms, it’s not just Southeast Asia that is supplied, and it’s not unheard of to have a product manufactured in Malaysia deployed in an office building as far afield as Western Europe. Inevitably, such scope gives Camfil a massive competitive advantage in terms of turnaround times and customer satisfaction, but there is a similarly pivotal refusal to rest on its laurels behind the scenes, with ongoing improvements and

50

investments ensuring that this advantage widens. “As volumes increase, we continuously upgrade our factories and introduce capital expenditures to our manufacturing facilities in order to meet increasing market demand,” Balan affirms. “We are also getting new equipment each year and also using high-end tech and ICT to help our global strategy. These systems aid R&D and our supply chain to make sure we have optimum infrastructure and systems across the board.”

that, but is growing in the process. As a green Company we therefore attract a lot of younger people who share our philosophy and we give them the opportunity to make a difference across lots of different industries,” Balan explains. “There is also a positive feeling that you get from working for Camfil; we’re like a family and adopt a very transparent structure with no hierarchy. “We delegate to people and make them feel empowered so that they continuously enjoy their work and feel motivated to make a difference.” A local focus in each country of operation compounds this feel-good culture and wider sense of enrichment that the business is ultimately built upon. In turn, the levels of innovation and operational excellence that are generated from each employee are escalated; again in line with the Group’s primary ambitions. “All the time people are looking to us as the benchmark. We are the premium Company in the industry and

are constantly bringing innovative products to the market that are ahead of the curve; and we’re doing so across a global footprint,” Balan shares as Camfil’s overriding differentiator. “In terms of growth, there’s only three or four global players and the rest are localised. and Asia so in terms of modernisations and the various industries we can leverage that to see what trends are coming up.” That being said, Balan believes that Asia is in a better position than most to accept the level of futurism that Camfil is providing through its products and knowledge sharing, and he believes that Asia-Pacific will become one of the biggest portions of the overall Group turnover in the years to come. He concludes: “The ambition stems back to that of our founding member in giving something back to those within the Company in terms of employees, and to those outside of the Company in terms of our wider purpose and in giving back to society through our products. “And from there, we want to see Company growth in AsiaPacific especially; we want to grow responsibly, be more profitable and to make clean air a human right just like clean water is.”

POWERING Customer Growth Megatone Electronics Corp may not be the largest player in the contract manufacturing market, but it certainly packs a punch thanks to a flexible customer-centric approach which has been successfully translated across four continents Writer: Matthew Staff Project Manager: Arron Rampling egatone Electrics Corp’s one-stop shop for design and manufacturing services has been built upon an ethos of customer satisfaction and internal evolution; a philosophy which lends itself to long-term sustainability epitomised by its ongoing quality control processes, on-time delivery record, excellent communications, cost savings measures, and international expansion. Established in 1972, the initial business model revolved around manufacturing and marketing portable radios, an offering that enjoyed

so much demand that a natural broadening of the portfolio - from its domestic Taiwan base - became inevitable from both a capacity and product perspective. “Having added the capacity to develop and manufacture front panels and cabinets for radio cassette players, Megatone made its debut as an integrated components manufacturer and assembler, and by 1978, we were offering music centres and mini stereo systems. As demand for our services grew, Megatone transformed to become a full-service manufacturing Company,” according to Managing Director, George Hu. “Now, Megatone’s electronic manufacturing services offer comprehensive and integrated design and manufacturing services to optimise our clients’ operations and time to market, from initial product design to volume production. “We are skilled in servicing OEMs and ODMs across a wide variety of industries including automotive, industrial control equipment, telecommunication, power management, video/ audio/entertainment, computer peripherals, medical devices and consumer electronics.” The Company’s total value-added package exudes quality, product care, supply chain optimisation and

forward thinking, realised through its production planning, testing, logistics, client service and support elements. Subsequent attainment of ISO9001 and ISO 13485 certification has justified its strategy to this point, and emphasises the differentiation achieved within the wider market. Hu says: “At Megatone we understand the importance of worldclass quality, cost competitiveness, ontime delivery, open communications and flexibility. We have been helping our customers reduce their overall cost of operations and manufacturing for more than 40 years.

World-class quality

Flexibility compounded by world-class quality forms a potent combination often unrivalled in the market, and Megatone is leveraging this differentiator in a global domain that embraces such levels of innovation and tech expertise. “Megatone’s focus is on world-class quality manufacturing of products for our customers more than creating new technologies or products. Having said that, we do strive to find better ways to increase the repeatability of our manufacturing processes and deliver finished goods to our customers in a timely and efficient manner to help keep reducing the total cost of our customers’ operations.” Hu affirms. “For example, we’ve gradually upgraded our manufacturing equipment to be more advanced and energy-efficient and we’ve also converted all of our lights from florescent to LED. “In addition, we’ve implemented a sophisticated ERP system to reduce and eliminate unnecessary paper trails.” Streamlining and sustaining the business even further, Megatone looks to retain a local feel within the Company wherever possible, emanating from its workforce and infiltrating areas of the supply chain. Honing a perfect balance between this indigenous tactic and capitalising on its international presence, the resulting combination stands the organisation in perfect stead in order to meet its goals. “Megatone supports the local economy and the majority of our employees are local,” Hu confirms. “We also have a few employees from the US and Latin America and since

Machinery to facilitate streamlined and efficient operations

“Megatone is proud of several areas which it will strive to maintain, including our attention to customers, as without them we would not be here; so we are very flexible wherever possible and we do whatever we can to satisfy their needs,” Hu concludes. “We also believe it is critical to have good communication with our customers. We pride ourselves in keeping the customer informed about their project and we have found that our customers greatly appreciate that. “Finally, on-time delivery and flexibility is another area that our customers have complimented us on. If your CM partner does not deliver on-time and consistently, that is a huge problem and you can lose business to competitors. Megatone continuously works on providing on-time delivery so our customers can satisfy and keep their customers.”

Connecting Myanmar to a Better Future Ooredoo Myanmar has built a reputation for unparalleled data quality, innovation and CSR over its busy three years of existence, but it is only the beginning for the Company’s overall ambitions of nationwide connectivity and enrichment Writer: Matthew Staff Project Manager: Donovan Smith oredoo will forever boast the reputation of launching the world’s first 3G-only network to enable its market-leading internet provision in Myanmar, but this only tells one chapter of an ongoing story which affirms the telecom operator’s position as a globally significant innovator. Having initially brought “crystal clear voice calls and fastest internet” to the country in 2013, compounded by the availability of life enriching value-add services a year later, the Company’s rapid growth has been one built upon industry firsts, national pioneering and partnership building; and this is still technically classed as the business’s inception period.

58

“The first 12 months were very busy, with many things happening in parallel. We were building a Company from the ground-up; setting up an advanced 3G network, a national distribution network, and a world-class team of people. At the same time, we were launching innovative products, which for the first time in Myanmar made mobile phone service something that the entire population could afford,” says the Company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rene Meza. “We’ve seen explosive growth, and a market that has matured faster than anyone would have expected. From rolling out only a couple of years ago, Ooredoo already has 80 percent of subscribers using the internet; most on their smartphones. The country is hungry for data, and is accessing the internet at an unprecedented rate for an emerging market. It was this explosive growth that encouraged Ooredoo to break records once again, and launch the first 4G network in Myanmar, which covers 4.6 million people.” “We’re also very happy with the role we’ve played in bringing entry-level smartphones into Myanmar, with our S-Series devices, allowing all customers to get access to our fastest network. We wanted to make the experience of accessing the fastest data network accessible to everyone, so prices are at par with feature phones at only approximately US$20. These devices have taken the nation by storm.

Now is the right time to implement LTE for Public Safety The public safety industry is today at an interesting turning point that will define the evolution of the mission-critical broadband space. There is a lot of talk in the industry about the connected police officer or first responder of the future and the impressive set of devices and gadgets they will have at their disposal. But to build the foundation for the augmented reality of tomorrow, we need to do more than showcase gadgets. Making the right technology choice to enable innovative development is a pressing matter today, and it means investing in the latest generation of technology. LTE is an enabler for building safer and smarter cities Urbanisation and globalisation are changing the way city infrastructure is managed. Citizens and governmental agencies need smarter, better integrated, secure services; like e-government, emergency services support, transportation and remote healthcare. Robust broadband access, sensor networks, cloud capabilities, security, and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms are key components of any smart city implementation. For mission-critical users, the key requirements for smart city network, platforms and services are the same as those of today; security, reliability, availability and prioritisation capabilities. The global LTE ecosystem is driving the development of new applications and services that benefit from high throughput and low latency, such as automatic licence plate readers and live video streaming with analytics right at the network edge.

To meet the future needs of mission-critical networks in smart cities and beyond, Nokia helps bridge together the various connected devices, sensors and applications as well as different agencies and enterprises operating in smart cities. An excellent example of Nokia’s end-to-end expertise and technology portfolio is the recent contract with the Dubai government. The comprehensive solution we provide enables high-bandwidth voice, video and other data applications for mission-critical services and IoT applications. It is also a great example of how making the decision to adopt LTE ties closely together with Dubai’s ambition to become a safe and smart city for its residents and visitors. Nokia helps with smooth evolution from narrowband systems to comprehensive broadband networks Nokia has a history of more than 60 years of experience with governmental customers. We also have long experience in supporting telecom operators with their migration from legacy networks to the latest mobile broadband technologies. Similarly, we are helping the public safety industry with a smooth migration to LTE. Today, Nokia has all the building blocks in place to help mission-critical network operators and agencies quickly adopt mobile broadband. We have a comprehensive endto-end technology and service portfolio and support all the different deployment options for mission-critical networks.

Ooredoo-PACT Myanmar Mobile Clinic in Madaya Township, Mandalay region

Crystal clear voice & unprecedented data speeds

Facilitating these strategies has been a US$2 billion investment into the Company’s telecom infrastructure development, consolidating its position as the fastest internet brand. On the other side of Ooredoo’s two-pronged mission, a further US$12 million has been spent on CSR initiatives compounded by partnerships with leading NGOs both inside and outside of Myanmar. “Investment in Myanmar is important, both from a technology perspective and a corporate social responsibility perspective,” Meza states. “We are a technology Company, which is obvious, so we started off our investment in this category, offering only advanced 3G service. This was a big bet, and it’s paid off. It also paved the way for our 4G roll out. As of July, we had built 4,232 towers and expanded 11,546 kilometres of fibre optic cable proving

68

our commitment to the long-term, not only in the development of the telecommunication sector in Myanmar; but also the development of education and health sectors for the people in Myanmar.” But Ooredoo has not stopped with simply technology investments. The operator leads the way in Myanmar with regards to investment in social causes too. “We have done our best to make an impact in Myanmar, in a meaningful way,” continued Meza. “We are working with several international partners currently. Ooredoo is funding mobile health clinics with PACT International, to help get medical access to the furthest corners of Myanmar. We are also working with the Red Cross, in order to provide sustainable sources of drinking water in areas where supply is limited and to support disaster relief. Most recently, we made a $3.1 million investment to the UNOPS in order to build primary

healthcare facilities across Myanmar; and we’re not done yet. From 2015, we’ve invested more than $12.8 million in corporate social responsibility. This is something I’m personally very proud of, and it’s really showcasing our commitment to this country.” Winning numerous awards in the Asia-Pacific region as a consequence of its all-encompassing ethos, the Company’s overall investment total has topped the US$2 billion mark and is currently the fastest growing operator in Myanmar despite its already established stronghold. “Being the fastest growing operator in Myanmar makes us very proud. At the end of June, we had 8.2 million active customers and the usage of data and voice services has doubled. By the end of 2016 we plan to have 4,500 towers and 13,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables throughout Myanmar, all running on state-of-the-art technology; by far the widest coverage in Myanmar.”

Connecting to the better future

Successfully keeping more than eight million people happy comes a little easier when people closer to home are sharing their satisfaction, and this is achieved via a “people first” strategy incorporated into Ooredoo’s human resource structure. World-class training and development programmes - driven both internally and via external partners with specialised skills - prove that learning doesn’t just end in the classroom and Ooredoo has leveraged this concept to tailor a host of young professionals towards the Company’s own vision. “With our intention to make Ooredoo the best place for people to work for, we are focused on fairness and respect. We ensure we have a fair environment where everyone respects each other and we have a Business Code of Conduct where all employees are encouraged to conduct business in ethical ways in line with our brand values of caring, connecting and challenging,” Meza explains. “Our employees are our first customers and just as we listen to the voice of our customers, we also continuously listen to our employees’ voices as top talents stay only if they feel recognised. We’re also in the middle of rolling out a world-class health and safety programme, to ensure that our staff and our partners have access to best practices that will keep them safe when doing their jobs.” The same principle is applied throughout Ooredoo’s supply chain and business partner strategy in ensuring that continuous communication and engagement is backed up by trust and loyalty; assets that are given even more significance considering the country’s transitional phase. Meza concludes: “Myanmar is in another transitioning phase with more customers seeking out advanced 4G network services, the next evolution of data services. Our customers’ lifestyles

are moving faster in the 21st century and there is so much more to learn and so much more to do with the internet. We want to provide them with a service that is going to be convenient for them. “We want students to go online, we want doctors to be connected to the best practices world-wide, we want

to help people bring their business ideas to life… all on the fastest 3G/4G network. “We’ve got momentum now, and we’re not slowing down,” concluded Meza, “We’re here to make a difference in Myanmar, for the long-term. Stay tuned for more innovation, and more excitement, from Ooredoo Myanmar.

ild Cat Developments Ltd (WCD) has grown from humble beginnings to become a major force in the oil-heli-rig construction and complementary mining, oil & gas, and civil engineering sectors over the past 30 years, and is now looking to leverage its comprehensive knowledge of the volatile Papua New Guinea (PNG) terrain to achieve even more concerted Company growth in the future. Based in Mendi, Southern Highlands Province, since inception; the Company previously operating as Carson Pratt Services Ltd has thrived under its current guise since its acquisition – along with subsidiary, South West Air Ltd – by the Remington Group

of Companies in 2013. Subsequently evolving from beginnings in hydrometric survey work, both Wild Cat and South West Air – established to support the Wild Cat business with fixed and rotary wing aircraft operations – have become a one-stop shop in the PNG domain, with flexibility and bespoke capabilities perfectly befitting of the country’s niche requirements. All-told, the Company’s service remit now comprises the full range of construction and engineering assets to apply to a number of key industrial sectors in the country including road, bridge and airport construction; design and construct services; remote petroleum exploration rig site development; construction and

exploration camp installation and operation; and remote area aviation operations via South West Air. Project investigation, feasibility, and design service facilitation add further strings to the Wild Cat bow in catering for project requirements from start to finish and, in sharing 36 years of experience in the construction industry, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tom Derby’s two decades of monitoring the country’s enormous resource potential bubble to the surface is being solidly instilled into the business’ current strategic vision. “Our continuous improvement philosophy is essentially based on vertical integration and selfsufficiency,” he emphasises.

Projects, PNG-wide

The reasons for Wild Cat Developments’ more recent success can largely be attributed to this in-house ethos, the customisability that comes through such a structure, and the resulting diversification that has occurred in complementing its core business arms. Strong links having been developed with related industries – including those under the South West Air banner – has allowed the Company to branch out into areas of geological, survey and seismic work, for instance; epitomising the platform that has been laid for a plethora of nationally significant contracts awarded to Wild Cat in recent years. Derby says: “Wild Cat Developments has traditionally worked mainly in the Highlands, Gulf and Western Provinces, however we have tendered a number of projects outside of these regions in the past three years including West New Britain (where we are

74

The Company will generally concentrate on projects PNG-wide moving forward, although we would certainly be interested in looking at possibilities in other Pacific Island countries

now working), Central, Bougainville, Madang (where we constructed two rig sites) New Ireland, Manus, Milne Bay and Morobe Provinces. “At present, WCD is involved, with its joint venture partner, Golding Contractors, in the BRIRAP Package 2 ADB-funded bridges project in West New Britain and this should be completed around the middle of 2017. It involves the replacement of 12 bridges on the New Britain Highway. We are also bidding on other ADBfunded road projects in Southern Highlands and hope to pick up at least one; while we also hope to be involved in the K170 million Halimbu-Kelabo road project in Hela Province which is due to kick-off shortly.” Further talks in regards to major proposed bridge projects on the Ramu highway compound this substantial influence on the PNG engineering scene and are an indictment of the overall portfolio which also embraces numerous contracts having been

Golding Contractors joint venture Wild Cat Developments and Golding Contractors, a long established major civil works contractor based in Queensland, began discussions in late 2013 with regards to bidding for contracts under a joint venture arrangement. The JV has bid and continues to bid for projects throughout PNG of a value of generally more than K50 million. In December, 2014 they were awarded the K84.5 million BRIRAP Package 2 ADBfunded project to construct 12 new bridges on the New Britain Highway in West New Britain. WCD and Golding bring significant assets to the JV arrangement with the former’s long history in PNG and extensive local knowledge and access to prime labour resources in the country. Golding has mature and professional project management systems, particularly in the financial management area, and personnel with strong major project contractual knowhow. The JV team works together well and a strong partnership has been formed between the two companies. The experience gained by Wild Cat through its increased exposure to larger and more complex projects is of great benefit as the Company matures and grows. – Tom Derby, Chief Executive Officer, Wild Cat Developments completed across areas of rigsite construction; the construction and operation of base camps; geological line cutting and logistical support for camp operations and seismic projects; road construction activities; bridge construction; general civil engineering works for various quarries and airports; survey works and exploration; and overseas works which may provide a glimpse into a future broadening of Wild Cat’s focus. Derby continues: “The Company will generally concentrate on projects PNG-wide moving forward, although we would certainly be interested in looking at possibilities in other Pacific Island countries. Solomon Islands is one area we may consider in the near future.”

Substantial expansion

Being involved in some of the country’s most significant projects is a responsibility lived up to in some part through the experience and expertise

enjoyed by Wild Cat in PNG, but is never taken for granted as epitomised by its continuous investment strategy and the kinds of key business partnerships entered into over the years. A quick look at the manufacturers responsible for the equipment within the Company’s fleet sheds light to this end, with the likes of Sandvik, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hyundai, Sumutomo, Isuzu, Nissan, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Atlas Copco, Toyota and Ingersoll Rand just a small sample of the global heavyweights driving Wild Cat’s daily operations. And as Derby emphasises, updating and upgrading these machines and processes is pivotal to facilitate the contracts being awarded to the business. “2015 was a year of substantial expansion for the Company and significant investment was made in a new plant with quite a number of bulldozers, excavators and other more specialised items purchased.

The reduced activity in 2016 has seen minimal capital expenditure with the exception of a new crushing and screening plant for our Southern Highlands operations,” he explains. “The slowdown has allowed Wild Cat Developments to focus on improving our internal systems and also to work on ISO accreditation for the Company in health & Safety, the environment and quality. “This should be in place by the end of the year. We are also in the process of implementing Jobpac project management software and Fleetmate software systems.” The aforementioned slowdown over the past two years – across the global industry, not just PNG – has greatly reduced the amounts of mining and exploration activity as well as the amounts of funding being spent on infrastructure in countries like PNG. However, as Derby affirms, this has allowed for the business to hone in more concertedly on internal

refinements, and has been offset once again by the unparalleled diversity within the Group at large. “Wild Cat Developments has diversified and can focus on civil infrastructure works when there are limited opportunities in oil & gas. However, a great deal of our civil infrastructure work has been with the Government and their reduced revenue makes it difficult to: one, get paid for work completed; and two, continue working on Governmentfunded work in the absence of any guarantee of getting paid. “To attempt to counter this, Wild Cat Developments is pursuing work that is not directly or completely funded by the Government; for example, ADB, JICA or World Bank funded projects and/or privately funded projects. We are also working with foreign companies who have access to foreign soft loan facilities and who supply – for example – bridge structures and pavement stabilising compounds.”

Wild Cat Developments’ employment policy is to hire locally as far as possible and train our local staff in preference to hiring expensive expatriate personnel

Can-do attitude

With a permanent workforce of between 400 and 800 at any given time, a significant factor in the Company’s long-term success has not just been senior management’s experience in the volatile region, but the way in which this knowledge has been passed down to all levels of a well-drilled, and predominantly localised, workforce. “Wild Cat Developments’ employment policy is to hire locally

as far as possible and train our local staff in preference to hiring expensive expatriate personnel,” Derby explains. “This policy has been recently reinforced due to the current slowdown and the need to minimise overheads. Out of a current total of 400 employees we currently employ 15 expatriates and the remainder are PNG nationals. “We are developing a graduate training programme for our national engineers and we are finding great

N

benefit in employing new graduates directly out of Lae Unitech. We have also significantly increased the amount of training provided Company-wide in the past two years and regularly send staff to a variety of courses for administration, accounting, HSE etc; generally in Port Moresby. We also provide on-the-job training in safety and plant operations etc.” The staff complement now existing within Wild Cat is something which the CEO attributes as a key differentiator for the business; providing the most accountable and personable element of the longevity and extensive knowledge base that drives the business forward each year. Derby continues: “A key advantage is the can-do attitude of our staff who want to see the Company do well and evolve into a contractor of choice. “Other advantages include our location which gives us access to the resource-rich highlands in which our clients operate; our quality and history; our clients including Oil Search, Horizon, TOTAL, Exxon, NAC, NRA and DoW; our diversity of work; and our sister Company, South West Air which gives us the ability to fast-track key materials, plants and people to site in order to respond quickly to clients’ needs.” Ambitions for the next period of Company development include revenue growth of between 20 and 50 percent on 2015’s figures, compounded by more tailored improvements epitomised by achieving ISO certification; implementing a more mature project management system; achieving Tier 1 HSE performance; and by increasing the IT infrastructure at both Wild Cat’s headquarters and site locations. Ultimately though, Wild Cat Developments is as driven as ever to continue a legacy in PNG that has already been 30 years in the making, while creating a sustainable future for the business off the back of its now unrivalled service and sector complement.

Industrial Developers PNG’S

Hornibrook NGI represents the coming together of two long term industrial facilitators in Papua New Guinea, and fulfils the same role to this day via nationally significant projects and CSR initiatives Writer: Matthew Staff | Project Manager: Tom Cullum

s an integral part of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) industrial and resource development, Hornibrook NGI may only have 16 years of history in its current guise but its merger in 1990 actually represented the coming together of two of the most renowned individual players to form the progressive market leader that thrives today. Now, with a future mapped by “capability and expertise” the Company is able to leverage unrivalled flexibility and turnkey steel fabrication and construction services to meet the needs of a nation in search of such a portfolio. Consequently, the project array

that Hornibrook NGI has been able to tally in a relatively short space of time is filled to the brim with nationally significant builds and contracts, an indictment on the Company’s ultimate ethos which places customer satisfaction at its core. “Our success can be measured in customer satisfaction, and the cost effectiveness of our products and services,” Hornibrook NGI affirms on its website. “It is due to a number of factors that differentiate us from our competitors, including such things as the provision of daily meals for all our people, free on-site medical services to maintain tradespersons’ health and wellbeing, and a culture of continuous improvement.

“We pride ourselves in delivering quality and excellence, no matter how big or small the job.” As such, Hornibrook NGI is confident of remaining PNG’s premier steel fabrication and building Company for clients across numerous sectors in the years to come.

Exciting development

Current successes represent efficient initial planning at the time of the Company’s inception back in 1990 when the steel fabrication interests of Hornibrook Constructions and NGI Steel Ltd united. “The merger provided a good unification of talents, and retained the knowledge and experience

ncepted in 1964, Barlow Industries has been servicing Papua New Guinea for more than 40 years as part of the PICSA Group of Companies; building upon a vision of not only being a leading national supplier of steel but to become more community and self-aware in terms of its image and wider influence. Primarily focused on the supply of steel products, and installation and service of roller doors, gates and accessories; the Company’s key philosophies revolve around social and corporate responsibility to both employees and clients, as well as maintaining the highest levels of quality throughout its offering.

that Hornibrook Constructions had built up since 1943 when they were first established in Papua New Guinea,” the Company explains. Already progressing impressively under this newly merged banner, the business received another boost in 2004 when Hornibrook NGI was purchased by a private group headed by the current Chairman; an “exciting development that was strongly supported by the management, staff, and the tradespeople of the Company, so that the capabilities, resources and personnel remain unchanged”. This may seem like a given, but when understanding the scope and extent of these unchanged capabilities within the market, it becomes apparent how significant this consistent strategy has become. Barlow has achieved this through ensuring the wellbeing of its employees and thus attracting and retaining a pool of qualified and experienced staff which has resulted in a healthy business environment transcending to its customer interactions. The same success can be said of its products and service range having improved its offering to cater for clients’ needs, by not only concentrating on steel products, but also providing accessories that go with these steel products. One such esteemed client to benefit from this entrepreneurial ethos is Hornibrook NGI, one of the largest construction Companies in Papua New Guinea. They have been heavily involved in a multibillion dollar resource development project as well as civil engineering projects alongside Barlow; the Company subsequently affirming its status as one of Hornibrook’s main suppliers, while the Hornibrook remains instrumental to Barlow’s own growth.

Bridges and tanks comprise another large facet of the business’s remit, harking back to decades far preceding 1990’s coming together; with the former especially benefiting from the fabricating and erecting of certified truss type bridges in PNG over the years. “Examples of these sturdy bridges can be found along the Ramu Highway between Lae and Madang. With piled abutments and internal walk-ways, the bridges do not suffer the same wash-away or vehicular damage of the more temporary bailey type bridging, and in fact the Hornibrook bridging was designed specifically for PNG’s particular conditions,” the Company explains.

We service all levels of the steel market from small jobs such as security and spiked fencing, to major projects which include such diverse items as the processing tanks for Tolukuma...

84

And here lies the crux of Hornibrook NGI’s current philosophy in ensuring that each project is carried out not only to the individual contract’s specifications, but in line with a wider all-encompassing strategy of enriching the country that hosted its success in the first place. To that end, a comprehensive list of up-and-coming projects are in the pipeline across domains of property development, housing estates, hotels and two more bridges which are set to

become the largest, nationwide. Across motor transport engineering, bridging, building and construction, and property development, major projects in PNG have included Burns Philp & Tribal Den, Prima Warehouse, SP Brewery Tank Farm, an extension to the SP Brewery Warehouse, and Manus Market; all the while being underpinned and driven by the business’s primary expertise which exists in the steel fabrication sector.

Improve the living standards of our people

“With a covered main steel fabrication workshop of 6,400 square meters, the Company’s steel fabrication facilities in Lae are the largest in PNG,” the Company affirms. “We service all levels of the steel market from small jobs such as security and spiked fencing, to major projects which include such diverse items as the processing tanks for Tolukuma, hard ore hoppers for Lihir, conveyors for Porgera, or pipe spooling for Chevrons Kutubu.”

The enrichment of PNG doesn’t end in the workshop or on site either, and a large facet of Hornibrook NGI’s success has derived from its corporate social responsibility efforts and in instilling itself into the general fabric of the country. “As a PNG company Hornibrook cares about our surrounding community and desire to improve the living standards of our people,” the Company says. One example can be seen through the Business Coalition against HIV and AIDS (BAHA) which is officially supported by Hornibrook NGI and is actually located on the Company’s head office grounds. There was also an opportunity to form a private hospital in Lae to improve medical faculties in the area, and to provide the community with an international standard of healthcare; an opportunity that was met with open arms as the Company took up the mantle of major shareholder in Lae International Hospital. From a supporting role, the business also sponsors the Hornibrook Harlequins Rugby Football Team to give unemployed youths self esteem and purpose; as well as the Tami Island Annual Fishing Competition which simultaneously serves as a fundraising event for the local people of Tami Island. “Hornibrook NGI actively supports numerous local charities and the community in various ways including; the employment of people with disabilities as well as HIV Positive workers,” the Company concludes. “Hornibrook NGI is also a founding corporate member with the PNG Occupational Health & Safety Association as well as being involved with numerous local community groups. “In addition to being an equal opportunity employer, Hornibrook NGI encourages women in the workforce and provides opportunities for women through apprenticeships and training in all divisions of the Company.”

change in identity from Gold Anomaly Limited to Crater Gold Mining Limited in July, 2013 certainly hasn’t meant a change in ability or philosophy for the Australian listed Company making waves in Papua New Guinea’s mining domain. With expertise in the development of gold and base metal projects across both nations, its operations in PNG have become a focal point for the business in recent years as its significant Crater Mountain and Fergusson Island projects continue to capitalise on the abundance of resources that exist in the country. “Papua New Guinea is a resourcerich country which is one of the richest gold and copper provinces in the world,” the Company says. “It boasts a number of giant world-class copper and gold deposits including Grassberg, Ok Tedi, Porgera, Wafi-Golpu, Hidden Valley, Bougainville and Lihir Island as well as a number of large deposits currently being brought into production.

“By international standards it has only been lightly explored. Despite being a developing nation, PNG has a modern sophisticated mining legislation and supporting administrative infrastructure including a freely available database - much now in digital format - of all previous exploration activities. The Government is highly supportive of the mining industry and sovereign risk is very low compared to other developing nations.”

The Company adds: “Our corporate strategy is to identify areas prospective for the occurrence of world-class mineral resources; to acquire selected areas and undertake exploration; to evaluate projects and undertake feasibility studies; and the commercial development of projects evaluated to be economically viable.”

Boasting a number of Tier 1 projects in PNG and Australia as a consequence of this strategy, the business’s role in PNG especially has been driven by its flagship operations at Crater Mountain.

Our corporate strategy is to identify areas prospective for the occurrence of worldclass mineral resources; to acquire selected areas and undertake exploration...

“The flagship Crater Mountain project is a potential multi-million ounce gold deposit located in the Eastern Highlands of PNG. Significant gold mineralisation has been discovered on the surface and at depth in drilling,” the Company explains. Located approximately 50 kilometres southwest of Goroka the regional centre for the Eastern Highlands Province - it comprises three contiguous exploration licenses straddling the border between the Chimbu and aforementioned Eastern Highland regions. “Crater Mountain has been actively explored for over 30 years, initially by Kennecott and CRA for copper porphyry mineralisation, and in the 1980s by Esso, City Resources and Highlands Gold for epithermal gold mineralisation,” the Company details on its website. “These efforts identified four prospect areas; Nevera, Nimi, Awanita and Masi. “Although anomalous base and

precious metals values have been discovered at all of the mentioned Crater Mountain prospects, Nevera is by far the most advanced prospect; enabling lower development and mining costs and amenable to open pit or bulk underground mining.” Back in 2013, the Company decided to assess the potential of the High Grade Zone for fast-tracking smallmedium scale gold production with the strategy of reinvesting profit into the ongoing exploration of the Nevera Prospect’s larger-scale potential. “The Company has been developing the HGZ since August, 2013 through the development of an underground adit and cross cuts and an ongoing drilling programme,” Crater Gold continues. “This development has

passed through a wide zone of intense brecciation containing numerous narrow gold bearing mineralised structures correlating well with surface artisanal gold workings. “The Company believes that in the first year, production of 10,000 gold ounces is achievable, and there is strong potential for further gold and copper discoveries at the adjacent prospects to Nevera.”

Exploration and expansion

The Fergusson Island Project incorporates similar demonstrations of innovation and strategy in terms of getting the most out of the site, and comprises Gameta and Wapolu gold deposits “which are approximately 30 kilometres apart and lie a short

distance inland from the northern coastline of Fergusson Island in the D’Entrecasteaux Island Group of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea”. The Company explains: “The two properties have been explored for gold since the early 1980s during which time a total of 195 reverse circulation (RC) holes (10,179 metres) and 33 diamond holes (4,181 metres) have been drilled at Gameta; and 296 RC and air core holes (11,646 metres) and 97 diamond holes (6,401 metres) have been drilled at Wapolu.” Throughout the Company’s operations in both Australia and PNG, the emphasis placed on wider national enrichment extends beyond the confines of the mines, with a concerted focus on local employment and local business partnerships. Subsequently building an infrastructure of skills development around itself - and as the more than 200 staff in PNG will testify Crater Gold has generated its own sustainability within the nation. And with a new mining lease having been granted for further exploration and expansion to be carried out in Eastern Highland province moving forward, there are no signs of the Crater Gold momentum slowing down any time soon.
