EDITORIAL
of Europe Outlook magazine, our last issue for 2014. The publication is stacked with feature articles on companies who have set their sights on evolving industries and businesses by creating and incorporating new technologies and ideas, while remaining true to customer values and partner relationships. The new wave of IT driven services – such as cloud solutions and faster data access – has seen more businesses than ever utilise technology to streamline their processes, in order to better facilitate the needs of their customer base and help the company expand. Our high-octane front cover feature this issue is with Morgan Motor Company. Steve Morris, CEO of the last remaining family-owned and independent British car manufacturer, spoke to us on how the company has spent the last 105 years refining their processes and designs in order to keep their traditional British sports cars as desirable today as they have always been. On page 30, we have an interview with Swedish IT solutions provider Coromatic. Our interview with CEO Anders Tollsten offers an insight into how the Nordic company is beginning to transform the way in which European companies and industries look at their data storage and mission critical service management. With more companies turning to IT systems providers to avoid downtime, Coromatic have utilised over 20 years of experience to bring cutting edge technology to Europe’s data hungry companies. Any of our readers who are feeling hungry may want to avoid our mouthwatering interview with Bella Bulgaria on page 70. The food manufacturers have over 200 products on offer across Europe and with the company developing a new line of innovative and delicious creations, 2015 looks set to be filled with the taste of success. In the front of the magazine we have part two of our European holiday highlights, delving into the must-see locations in Europe from Madeira to Rome. Our investment profile for Norway focuses on the country’s renewable energy sector and how political stability and a strong economy has helped grow not only the GDP, but also the investment available for R & D projects. “Growth is never by mere chance; it is Matt Bone the result of forces working together.” Editor, Outlook Publishing James Cash Penny – Founder of JC Penny department stores.

Aldi currently holds around 4.8 percent of the UK market share according to Kantar World panel, ahead of fellow discount grocers Lidl and Iceland and just shy of luxury supermarket Waitrose’s 4.9 percent. “It is no great surprise to see that Aldi have posted record profits this year. Their record profits reflect the ongoing drive towards value in retailing. If we look at food retailing in the 1990s and the first part of
the 2000s, the focus was on generating customer satisfaction and the ‘big four’ trying to out-compete each other for market share. However, if we can categorise the last six or seven years in retailing as anything, it is the era of value,” said the Professor of Marketing at Warwick Business School, Lloyd Harris. “While the big four have all too often continued to dismiss the actions of such discounters - frequently using the labels ‘discounters’ or ‘no frill retailers’ as a means of suggesting lower quality - firms such as Aldi and Lidl have slowly and ever so quietly rewritten the rulebook of food retailing competition. Whereas in the past discounters just focused on being the cheapest, these new kids on the block have concentrated on creating value without compromise,” he added.
cream waste into its tank, where 24 billion natural micro-organisms break down the particles turning them into biogas. At the same time,
waste water, created as a bi-product of keeping the creation station’s machinery sparkling clean, is also fed into the tank, which acts like a battery by insulating water at the correct temperatures for ice cream creation and dramatically reducing the need for natural gas to heat the plant. The novel machine is an innovation in the field of purification of fat-containing wastewater. The innovation comes from wastewater streams that contain fat and oil being treated in one compact reactor, together with the degradable particles - whereas in conventional systems this is only possible by going through a number of processing stages. The machine has powered 16 million pints of Ben & Jerry’s in the past year, from “Cookie Dough” to “Phish Food”, and came out of test mode in June to be fully operational.
ALDI PROFIT BOOMS IN THE UK Discount supermarket Aldi has had a record year in the UK and Ireland, seeing a 65 percent jump in profits in the region as the “no frills” retailer makes the most of the “era of value”. The German headquartered chain said its low prices helped drive the record results, with the grocer seeing pre-tax profit of £260.9 million ($423.3 million) in 2013 in its UK and Irish business, up from £157.9 million on the previous year. “We keep prices constantly low while keeping product quality consistently high, which is exactly what shoppers want. Shoppers have become used to thinking you have to pay more for better products; we’ve shown them this doesn’t have to be the case,” Group Managing Director of Aldi UK, Roman Heini said. FO OD & DRINK

BPCE BANK TEAMS UP WITH TWITTER TO LAUNCH MONEY TRANSFERS VIA TWEETS NE OF FRANCE’S LARGEST BANKS HAS TEAMED UP WITH SOCIAL NETWORK TWITTER TO ALLOW ITS CUSTOMERS TO TRANSFER MONEY VIA TWEETS. THE MOVE BY GROUPE BPCE FRANCE’S SECOND LARGEST BANK IN TERMS OF CUSTOMER SIZE - COINCIDES WITH TWITTER’S OWN PUSH INTO THE WORLD OF ONLINE PAYMENTS AS THE SOCIAL NETWORK SEEKS NEW SOURCES OF REVENUE BEYOND ADVERTISING.
Twitter is racing other tech giants Apple and Facebook to get a foothold in new payment services for mobile phones or apps. They are collaborating and, in some cases, competing with banks and credit card issuers that have run the business for decades. The bank said it was prepared to offer simple person-to-person money transfers via Twitter to French consumers, regardless of what bank they use, and without requiring the sender know the recipient’s banking details. “(S-Money) offers Twitter users in France
8
a new way to send each other money, irrespective of their bank and without having to enter the beneficiary’s bank details, with a simple tweet,” Nicolas Chatillon, Chief Executive of S-Money, BPCE’s mobile payments unit, said in the statement.
Payment by tweets will be managed via the bank’s S-Money service, which allows money transfers via text message and relies on the credit-card industry’s data security standards. BPCE and Twitter declined to provide further details ahead of a news conference in Paris on Tuesday to unveil the service. Last month, Twitter started trials of its own new service, dubbed “Twitter Buy”, to allow consumers to find and buy products on its social network. The service embeds a “Twitter Buy” button inside tweets posted by more than two dozen stores, music artists and non-profits. Burberry, Home Depot, and musicians such as Pharrell and Megadeth are among the early vendors. Twitter’s role to date has been to connect customers rather than processing payments or checking their identities. “From the Twitter point of view, there is a limit to their appetite for getting involved in payments processing itself,” said Andrew Copeman, a payments analyst with financial services research firm AITE Group, who is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. “At the moment, banks are probably viewing Twitter and other social media networks as marketing channels to reach a wider set of their customers and to extend the bank’s existing mobile banking initiatives,” he said. Twitter’s success in developing additional services on its platform as Facebook has done will be key to its future profitability. Rakuten Bank in Japan offers a similar “Transfer by Facebook” service that lets users of its mobile banking app send money to anyone in their Facebook friends list.

T E C H N O L O G Y EU APPROVES FACEBOOK BUYOUT OF WHATSAPP N OCTOBER, EUROPEAN UNION REGULATORS CLEARED THE BUYOUT OF THE WHATSAPP MOBILE MESSAGING SERVICE BY FACEBOOK, DESPITE OPPOSITION BY TELECOM COMPANIES AFRAID OF THE GROWING POWER OF US TECHNOLOGY GIANTS. In a statement explaining its approval of the US$19 billion (€15 billion) deal, the European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said Facebook and WhatsApp were “not close competitors” and that consumers would continue to have a “wide array of choices”. “We have carefully reviewed this proposed acquisition and come to the conclusion that it would not hamper competition in this dynamic and growing market,” EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in a statement. Facebook, the world’s biggest social network, announced the buyout of the WhatsApp messenger service, used by 600 million people, in February
and US authorities approved the deal in April. The European Commission only automatically reviews deals where each company involved has sales of over €100 million across at least three EU states, which was not the case for this deal. But the powerful European telecom lobby had argued that Facebook and Whatsapp together would have access to an
unfair stock of user data and gain an unfair competition advantage in the crucial data and consumer habit market used by advertisers. However, the Commission turned down this argument concluding that, regardless of whether Facebook would start collecting WhatsApp user data, “the transaction would not raise competition concerns”. After the merger, “a large amount of Internet user data that are valuable for advertising purposes are not within Facebook’s exclusive control,” the Commission said. The decision comes as US Internet giant Google faces intense scrutiny from the Commission over accusations of unfair advantages the search engine gives its own services in search results.

EUROPE SUPPORTS HINKLEY NUCLEAR PLANT EW £16 BILLION NUCLEAR POWER STATION AT HINKLEY POINT IN SOMERSET IS TO GO AHEAD AFTER IT RECEIVED FINAL APPROVAL FROM EUROPEAN UNION REGULATORS.
The European Commission said Britain had agreed to “significantly modify” the financing for the project, reducing
10
the burden on British taxpayers. In total 16 commissioners voted in favour of the project, just ahead of the 15 votes needed for approval.
EDF Energy is due to build the plant, the first in the UK in almost 20 years. The Commission had been examining whether the funding for the project broke state aid rules. However, it said the changes agreed by the British authorities would cut the subsidy by more than £1 billion, meaning that state aid would remain “proportionate to the objective pursued, avoiding any undue distortions of competition”. The Commission said changes made meant gains generated by the project would be better shared with UK consumers. The decision was controversial, with green critics believing that the government should have offered subsidies to renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar energy. Austria, which strongly supports green energy, has threatened to take the European Commission to the European Court of Justice to protest against the decision. “There is absolutely no legal, moral or environmental justification for turning taxes into guaranteed profits for a nuclear power company whose only legacy will be a pile of radioactive waste,” said Greenpeace’s EU legal adviser, Andrea Carta. However, Lord Hutton of Furness, Chairman of the Nuclear Industry Association, said the Commission’s approval was “an important step”: “This will set in train an important time for the nuclear sector in the UK as new build projects get under way to replace the current ageing generation. It also gives certainty to other European countries looking at the UK system of contracts as a mechanism to secure their own supply.”

MUNICH AIMS FOR A 100% CLEAN ELECTRICITY SUPPLY BY 2025 Y 2020, THE EU HOPES THAT 20 PERCENT OF ENERGY WILL COME FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES SUCH AS WIND, SOLAR AND BIOMASS. IN MUNICH, AUTHORITIES HAVE GONE ONE STEP FURTHER, TARGETING A 100 PERCENT CLEAN ELECTRICITY SUPPLY BY 2025, WHICH WOULD MAKE THE CITY A WORLD LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY. “We forced our utilities company… to invest in renewable energy,” Hep Monatzeder, the former mayor of Munich, told CNBC’s Innovation Cities. “All the other big cities have to go this way, otherwise we will not protect the earth,” Monatzeder added. Stadtwerke München, or SWM, the city-owned utility company, will need to produce 7.5 billion kilowatt hours of green electricity to meet the target. An admirable ambition, but is this achievable? With a budget of roughly 9 billion euros, SWM has launched several new clean energy projects, including a hydro power plant on the river Isar, which produces enough electricity to supply 4,000 Munich homes a year. At Munich zoo, even elephant dung has been converted into sustainable fuel. Despite investing in clean energy projects in and around the Munich area, these are not enough to meet the needs of the city, which is home to more than one million people. In light of this, SWM has also been investing in clean energy projects all over Europe, including
a solar heat plant in Andalusia, Spain and off shore wind farms in the North Sea. The clean electricity from these installations is fed back into the integrated European grid. “If you save CO2 emissions in Munich or in Spain, it doesn’t matter, it is important that you… save them,” Florian Bieberbach, CEO of Stadtwerke München, said. “This is why this political aim does not mean technically to deliver the electricity in Munich, it just means Munich takes its share in combating climate change,” he added. Nevertheless, some businesses in Munich are embracing clean electricity. At the Hofbräuhaus beer hall, which is over 400 years old, the switch to green has been seamless. “We didn’t have to change any facilities, just change the contract,” Sabine Barthelmess said. “It’s easy to switch to green electricity… it’s good for our business, it’s good for our conscience and it’s also good for our image.” For Bieberbach, more businesses and utility companies need to follow the Hofbräuhaus’s example. “If you stick to the old, traditional ways of producing electricity, your company probably will have no future,” he said.

Reunification the former “Walled City“ of Berlin, lying as it does at the interface between Western and Eastern Europe, has developed into a popular travel destination and is highly indicative of the current trend, not only as far as tourists from Germany are concerned but also visitors from abroad. Guests are not only interested in the history and culture of the city, but also in the lifestyle of its inhabitants. But what exactly makes Berlin so attractive? It is the diversity, the contrasts and the sheer inexhaustible potential of this capital city to consistently fire the enthusiasm of its visitors from all over the world. People are excited by the mixture of history and Zeitgeist, the broad spectrum of art, culture, music, entertainment and shopping facilities. The modern hotel landscape, the diversity of its cuisine and its outstanding cost-effectiveness by comparison to other destinations in Europe also go to make up the special charm that is the metropolis on the Spree. A flourishing creative scene together with Berlin’s hip music and club culture likewise contribute to the unmistakable lifestyle metropolis with a population of around 3.5 million.

ROME, ITALY
The province of Rome is a matching frame for the many treasures of the capital, and the surrounding area has, more or less directly, experienced the influence of the history of the Eternal City. Rome is a province with a great deal to offer: sea, nature, good food and villages rich in history and art. The sea, the hills, lakes, rivers and vineyards: the surroundings of Rome offer a kaleidoscope of diversity and attractions for nature lovers. Located in Lazio in central Italy and facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, the province of Rome enjoys a Mediterranean climate on the coast and a continental one further inland. The coast stretches from north to south, from the area including Fiumicino and the towns overlooking Lake Bracciano, the largest in the province, to the border with the province of Latina. In the north-west there are the Tolfa and Sabatini Mountains, but also the nature reserves of Macchiagrande, Macchiatonda, Torre Flavia and Canale Monterano. In the Tiber Valley lies the Park of Valle del Treja and the nature reserves of Nazzano-Tevere-Farfa and of Mount Soratte. The Tiburtino-Sublacense area, crossed by the river Aniene, includes the regional parks of the Lucretili and Simbruini Mountains. It is characterised by green olive groves. The territory which includes the Prenestina area and the Lepini Mountains is nestled between the Aniene Valley and the Albani Hills. The volcanic lakes of Nemi and Albano characterise the Castelli Romani area, a holiday resort since ancient times, thanks to the mild climate and the gentle landscape. Even before becoming the capital of the Italian Republic, Rome had always played a key role, in Italy as well as in Europe. Caput Mundi in Roman times and later home of the papacy and the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, at international level Rome has always been a major political, cultural and spiritual influence.

Malaria is a disease that kills over 600,000 each year with an estimated 200 million catching it worldwide in the same period; sadly most of these are women and children in Africa. Over the last 20 years, there have been huge efforts made in trying to prevent malaria spreading and in combating the disease. The work done so far has contributed to reduce infection rates considerably and save countless lives. EU-funded researchers MCD have developed three new tools to kill mosquitoes that carry the disease. They are now working to bring their affordable innovations to market swiftly, providing a much needed boost to combat the ever-spreading disease. The most common modes of prevention are mainly through insecticide-treated bed nets and house sprays, which have proved effective so far. However, mosquitoes are becoming resistant to insecticides, potentially reversing the gains made so far and rendering current methods useless. In response to this increased resistance, researchers from Europe, Africa and the United States have come up with life saving alternatives. These products are: a special coating that transfers insecticides effectively to mosquitoes landing on it, insecticidelaced “eave tubes” to direct them to
The project has been going since December 2012 and is now at the stage where negotiations with manufacturers in Tanzania have been undertaken in order to mass produce the low cost projects and get them distributed. Leading the project is In2Care, a Netherlands-based research company specialising in development of products to control disease-transmitting insects.
Tubular Protection
In2Care and fellow project partner CTF2000, originally developed the netting for trapping pollen during high season. Having looked at the wider impact the netting could have, it was repurposed as mosquito control using the netting coated with insecticide at one end of tubes that are placed in the walls of the buildings. The tubes are placed into the walls and protrude under a building’s roof, known as the eaves, hence their name ‘eave tubes’. The mosquitoes looking to feed on blood usually enter through these openings, naturally following the scent of humans and the trail of carbon dioxide we breathe out. The mosquitoes end up on the netting, and make contact with the insecticide. With these tubes, insecticide is only applied to a small area, the netting. This means a huge reduction in the amount of insecticide used, which is better for people’s health and for the environment. Eave tubes have the potential to be more effective than indoor sprays as they kill the mosquitoes before they even get into the house. For indoor spraying to work, mosquitoes must first enter a house and land on a wall coated with insecticide; still allowing them ample time to infect a person.
The team working on the project initially tested the eave tubes back in 2013 in large outdoor cages in Tanzania. Within a night, 60 percent of the mosquitoes released were killed after contact with the tube netting. In November 2013, 20 houses had eave tubes installed in a small Tanzanian village. Six months later, the coating has remained an effective mosquito killer and it can be considered a genuine alternative to indoor spraying. Recently the team has started to modify another 1100 houses with eave tubes as part of a larger test to see the wider scale effectiveness. The researchers have also developed an alternative to the eave tubes; the ‘eave brick’, where plastic with insecticide-coated netting replaces a brick removed from a building wall. The team believes a typical household would spend about €1 per person per year over three years for the eave tubes or bricks. The tubes and the bricks have the ability to protect everyone in the house and not just those sleeping under a bed net making them a great alternative to current methods.
Smart Patches
MCD have also developed the “smart patch” for bed nets. The team’s research found that a mosquito’s first point of contact on a bed net is typically just above the head and torso of a sleeping person, near the top of the net. The researchers have created a piece of insecticide-treated netting, about the size of an A4 sheet of paper that when placed on this area of the bed net, would kill about 62 percent of the mosquitoes in the room within a night, as highlighted in outdoor cage experiments in Tanzania. method can turn an untreated net into one that remains effective without the need to coat the whole bed net with insecticide. Since the patch is placed on top of a bed net, people are less likely to come into contact with insecticide. This opens the way for more powerful alternatives to be used including insecticides that remain effective against mosquitoes over as longer period. The project’s partners, made up of three European companies, a health institute in Tanzania and a US university, plan to commercialise the eave tubes, the coating, and the smart patch before the end of the project in November 2015. The team is also hoping for additional funding to conduct a large scale field test of the eave tubes and bricks on up to 7,000 houses. This test would give solid scientific evidence that these tools can be broadly deployed to reduce the burden of malaria.
HEALTHCARE BLOOD TESTS COULD HELP DETECT BREAST AND OVARIAN CANCER EARLIER
KEY FACTS Participants UK (Coordinator), Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland Duration November 2012 - April 2016
The EU-funded project EPIFEMCARE is developing blood tests that could lead to the earlier detection of ovarian and breast cancers resulting in a smaller number of over-diagnosis of breast cancer and improved personalised care. Thousands of women each year are affected by breast and ovarian cancers and while several recognised treatments are available, early diagnosis and personalised treatment could save thousands more lives.
20
S C I E N C E
Tailored Screening for Better Results
The project which has been running since 2012 is currently developing new processes for the early detection of these two cancers – and for introducing a more personalised cancer care. The project is developing early detection blood tests for ovarian cancer as there is currently no screening programme in place for this. The tests aim to identify the characteristic fingerprints of tumour DNA in a patient’s blood and will enable the diagnosis of ovarian cancer without invasive surgical procedures. Breast cancer screening with mammography is currently the industry standard and is used across the majority of Europe and has proven to be effective at finding tumours in the body. Recent evidence, however, suggests that it can lead to overdiagnosis and therefore unnecessary treatment for patients. These blood tests are being developed using the promising science of epigenetics. The name roughly translates to ‘on top of’ or ‘in addition to’ our genes. Epigenetic changes can control whether our genes are switched ‘on’ or ‘off’ and erroneous epigenetic events are very much a feature of cancer. As a tumour grows, it releases DNA into the blood and this can be

collected and examined. EPIFEMCARE is identifying patterns characteristic of DNA from a tumour, and is using these as markers indicating whether a person might have breast or ovarian cancer. The project has made excellent progress since it began as the team have identified initial markers in breast and ovarian cancer tissue and these are currently undergoing further testing.
The Importance of Personalised Care In 2012, over 464,000 women in Europe were diagnosed with breast cancer. While it remains the most common form in women, the less common ovarian cancer is often discovered at a more advanced stage. Sadly, more than 60 percent of ovarian cancer patients die within five years of diagnosis. In both types, cancer eradication relies on surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or a combination to ensure no cancerous cells remain. Chemotherapy is currently prescribed for all women with the disease, but every woman will differ in her response to treatment. It is currently not possible to predict which women would benefit most from receiving which drugs. As every woman is an individual, it makes more sense to attempt to personalise their treatment where possible. This will be made possible with the EPIFEMCARE blood tests.
S C I E N C E & R E S E A R C H
The project has so far collected more than 1,100 blood samples from patients. The team has had to overcome the challenges of working with extremely small quantities of DNA nanograms rather than micrograms, which are more typically available in genomic analysis. This is then coupled with the complexities involved in studying epigenetic tags on the DNA. The end result is to develop and confirm a proven screening method that will help to dramatically reduce the proportion of ovarian cancer cases diagnosed in the late stages of the disease and the number of women treated unnecessarily for breast cancer.
SAFETY SYSTEMS SAVING LIVES WITH DYNAMIC EMERGENCY EXIT SIGNS
KEY FACTS Participants UK (Coordinator), Bulgaria, Belgium, Spain Duration November 2011 - October 2014
When it comes to an emergency evacuation at an airport or terminal building, indicating the safest exit can save lives. EU backed research hopes to minimise casualties with a new smart sign system able to establish the safest exit and clearly point people towards it. Trials have been encouraging, and discussions are underway on further developing some of the project’s groundbreaking technologies. Current research found that nearly 40 percent of us overlook and ignore emergency exit signs, even when they are directly in front of us due to the fact we see emergency exit signs every day around streets and buildings, we no longer register their presence. The same research confirmed that when the same signs
are seen, they are effective with 98 percent of us following their guidance. This was the starting point for the GETAWAY Project, which was set up to design signs that cannot possibly be overlooked. The team is also developing a new technology to first identify a possible incident, and then estimate the safest exit route depending on the location of the incident. This new technology would then also calculate the number of people at risk and where they are. Flashing signs indicating the safest exit are then activated, while flashing red crosses show which paths to avoid.
the system’s recommendations can be over ruled by a senior manager if they know better.
Testing the Theory
Three trials have already taken place to test the system in real world scenarios. The first tested the signs themselves, which look exactly like the signs we say every day but are made with LEDs that flash when activated. These vibrant signs were seen by more than twice the number of people who saw the ordinary industry standard signs. The time taken to decide upon an exit route was also reduced by over 40 percent. The second test took place in Sant Rapid Response Cugat Station in Barcelona, Spain, The system being developed first uses which has three designated emergency environmental sensors to detect smoke exits. Norway Europe Outlook takes a closer look at Norway’s business and investment potential Writer Emily Jarvis SOURCE www.invinor.no orway is a politically stable, modern and highly developed country with a small population and a very strong economy. The Norwegian economy is characterised by being open and mixed, with a combination of private and public ownership. Further, Norway is a safe and relatively easy country in which to do business. There are about 5,500 foreign-owned limited companies in Norway, with several thousand additional branch offices. The total value of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) stock in Norway is about 1,100 billion NOK (approximately 130 billion Euros), and the biggest sector receiving FDI is the offshore (oil and gas) sector. Norway had a strong growth of foreign investments during the last decade, compared to many other countries. The country is not a member of the European Union, but through the EEA agreement, Norway is part of the inner market, hence Norwegian companies have equal opportunities as those with EU membership.
Strong Economy Norway has a very strong economy, with the second highest GDP per capita in Europe. The forecast for the coming years shows continuous growth into the year 2015. At the same time, the unemployment rate is expected to be around 3.5%. The Norwegian State owns the world’s biggest investment fund, The Government Pension Fund Global, with about 5,000 billion NOK/600 billion Euros (value as of march 2014). The strong economy makes Norway an interesting market despite first appearances of the market size.
Showcasing World-Class Industries
Norway has developed some world-class industries that aspire to be global knowledge hubs. First and foremost, these are oil and gas, maritime and the MARIN (seafood) sector. In addition to the three global industries, you will find three important complementary knowledge industries: the finance industry, the ICT industry and knowledge-based services. Lastly, you will find some potent and still emerging industries in Norway, like Medtech, Cleantech and biotechnology.
Country of Choice for R&D Activities
The close collaboration between industry and R&D institutions is one of the reasons why Norway is very well suited for R&D activities. In addition, the country provides an open, attractive and excellent research and innovation system, global knowledge hubs and government support schemes. The costs of setting

up R&D activities are internationally competitive, and there is a well-developed system to protect intellectual property rights. Norway participates fully in all EU research programmes and activities.
Productive and Competitive
Competitive Values and Structures in Work-Life
Rich in Resources
Much of Norway’s economy depends on the use of its natural resource base. For this reason, Norway is dependent on governmental regulation in order to balance economical and environmental interests. The country is rich in natural resources, including oil and gas, hydropower, fish, forests and some minerals. The development of the hydroelectric energy sector at the beginning of the 20th century triggered industrial growth, particularly within the aluminium and ferroalloy industry and fertiliser production. The discovery of large reserves of oil and gas in the late 1960s gave further boost to the economy. Norway is the third largest shipping nation in the world, and aquaculture is the second largest export industry. Other important sectors include oceanic fisheries and forestry.

SECTORS
The values of the Norwegian work life stimulate productivity and innovation. Some key elements are little hierarchy, flat structures, open communication and cooperation. There is a high degree of trust between employer and employee and people feel empowered. Gender equality is stimulated and the participation of women in the workplace is one of the highest in the world. Norway’s productive environment makes it possible to maintain an adequate balance between both work and private life.
TOP
Norwegian productivity is much higher than the average of the European Union. There are several reasons for this. One is the use of advanced technology and a constant focus on productivity due to high labour costs. Another is of course the extra value from the petroleum sector. It could also be argued that trust, the flat structures and open communication in the work place play a vital part in enhancing innovation. According to the World Competitiveness Scoreboard from IMD in 2013, Norway was the sixth most competitive country in the world.
OIL & GAS Norway is the world’s second biggest exporter of natural gas and the fifth biggest exporter of oil in the world. Hence, the petroleum industry is the most important industry in Norway. Not only does it contribute to the wealth in the country, but it is also a very important driver for the innovation and technology development in other sectors. The petroleum sector is vital for the country’s economy, representing some 25% of the gross domestic product, 30% of the state income, more than 50% of export earnings and providing some 250,000 jobs, directly and indirectly. Export earnings are no longer only the revenues from the export of oil and gas to global customers. The export of goods and services is also making major contributions. There is optimism in the industry with new reserves found in recent years, even in mature areas, Together, these discoveries amount to 400-600 million barrels of oil equivalents. There will therefore be several new projects on the Norwegian continental shelf and in Norwegian waters in the next 10-15 years. Several of these will demand new technology and risk taking.

Norway is a pioneer in renewable energy and environmental technology, and has set ambitious targets for more sustainable energy use. By 2020, Norway aims to reduce emissions of greenhouses gases by 30 percent and to increase the renewable share of total energy consumption to 67.5 percent, which is the highest renewable share in Europe. The Norwegian renewable energy sector comprises approximately 2,000 companies, 50,000 employees, and revenue of 200 billion NOK. Nearly all electric energy generated in Norway derives from hydroelectric power. Norway currently produces 140TWh of electricity, and aims to increase the renewable power production by an additional 13.2TWh by 2020. Norway has vast wind energy resources both onshore and offshore. So far, only 632 MW of wind power has been installed - almost exclusively on land. The world’s first floating wind turbine has been in operation ten kilometres off the coast since 2009, with a capacity of 2.3 MW. Norway is utilising the knowledge and experience from offshore oilfield and maritime operations for future offshore wind power development.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
The solar energy sector has seen tremendous growth over the last 20 years, and during this period, Norway became a global leader in solar production. Although production has plummeted in recent years due to global overproduction, Norway is still a major producer of solar grade silicon, ingots and high grade wafers. At Technology Centre Mongstad, Norway has built the world largest test centre for carbon capture, and companies from around the world are welcome to test their technologies here. Since 1996, Norway has used the Sleipner offshore natural gas field for CO2 storage. The means to achieve Norway’s ambitious targets are an optimum mix of technology development, initiatives to improve energy efficiency and new services. In addition, substantial investments are required. Government regulations, investment incentives and demanding public sector customers are means to precipitate the desired implementation of sustainable solutions.
MARITIME The Norwegian maritime sector comprises 7,500 companies, 100,000 employees, a turnover of 410 billion NOK and approximately 10 percent of the national wealth creation. Norway accounts for less than one per thousand of the world’s population, but is a super power in the maritime business. Norwegian ship owners control 7% of the global fleet, and shipping companies (including rig and drilling rig companies), maritime service providers, ship and rig building yards, and ship equipment manufacturers hold a leading position in a wide variety of areas.

HEALTHCARE The healthcare sector spans a wide range of technologies and expertise, from drug discovery, diagnostics to medical devices and health related ICT. The Norwegian R&D-based industry supplying new healthcare solutions comprises of about 500 companies with about 15,000 employees. The total turnover is about 30 billion NOK, approximately equally split between biomedicine and Medtech/health ICT. With an aging population, the demand and cost for healthcare is soaring. The demographic changes will shift the balance between receivers of care and trained care personnel; hence there is a strong international drive to develop new technologies which allow elderly people to continue to live independently in their own homes.
FORESTRY The forestry industry has long-standing traditions in Norway. In the processing industry, Norway has one of the world’s leading technological environments related to products that use wood as an input factor. In the building industry, Norway is considered one of the leading countries in the development of wooden structures such as bridges and buildings. The forestry and wood processing industry has been an important employer throughout the country, and global trading of raw materials and products has been going on for centuries. Today, felling rates are low in relation to the growth in Norwegian forests, and this provides opportunities for increased production of renewable and sustainable products that the market wants. Due to several challenges in the industry, the government will spend NOK 750 million on a package of measures to assist the Norwegian forestry sector. The package from the government aims to increase efficiency in transport, to stimulate to new uses of wood in buildings and in general to enhance innovation and increase R&D.

The Norwegian fishing industry currently supplies seafood to consumers in more than 130 countries worldwide. This is healthy food, produced in a cold ocean environment. The fishing and aquaculture industry is one of Norway’s foremost export industries and is vital for settlement and activities along the Norwegian coast. It provides employment in finishing, aquaculture and the fishing industry, and has widespread effects on trade and industry as well as on research and development. Norway controls some of the world’s most productive marine environments, with excellent conditions for conducting environmentally friendly aquaculture. Norway places great emphasis on gaining knowledge of fish resources to ensure a sustainable management. Consumers must have confidence in Norwegian seafood. Food safety throughout the entire production chain is a primary focus, and the levels of foreign substances are documented.
GREEN IT There is today a surplus of renewable energy in Norway (resulting in low prices), a robust electric grid, a cool climate, a modern broadband infrastructure, an extremely digitally competent workforce, and a stable political, geological and economic environment. Norwegians are known to be early users of information technology. Today, the internet penetration in Norway is about 97% - the highest in Scandinavia. The Norwegian IT industry encompasses a wide variety of high-tech companies that create new telecommunications, hardware, software, and industrial electronics products, and provide consultancy services. One focus area today is green IT. Norway has many competitive advantages in developing solutions for the greening of the society and combating climate change. The initiative includes topics such as green data centres, smart grid-solutions, smart buildings and smart logistics.
A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE According to the annual ranking from the UNDP - the Human Development Index 2014 - Norway still holds the top spot as the best place to live in, and this has remained so year after year. Norway is a well-developed welfare state with a high degree of social security. The country prides itself on being green and is a real gem for nature lovers.

ith an interconnected society that is built on reliable access to online services and power, the solutions for meeting such demand in buildings 24 hours a day seven days a week have become critical to companies. Add the increase in businesses using cloud services and requiring larger data storage locations, The Nordic region has seen itself become the new hotbed for data centre and cloud solutions. With an abundance of land available for building upon and temperatures perfectly suited to running thermally dependant hardware, Sweden is the perfect backdrop for Coromatic’s burgeoning services. Established back in 1992, Coromatic have been at the forefront of delivering reliable power and critical facilities in the Nordic region, thanks to the entrepreneurial mind set and family oriented values of managers and employees alike. Anders Tollsten, CEO of Coromatic, believes that being an early adopter of security and critical facilities put them in a strong position when the world kept getting more reliant on IT: “Back when the company was set up, the founders wanted to ensure that they offered customers in the IT sector something new and something that would really benefit the client’s company. The emphasis was always on customer needs and addressing them. We quickly saw that designing and building secure data centres and other critical facilities for businesses was going to be big business before our competitors began to take notice of the way the market was changing. This gave us a huge advantage in the field to hone our craft and start offering companies the use of our services.”

Services to Suit Needs
Having established themselves as an early adapter and market leader of mission critical infrastructure solutions, Coromatic have built up around a simple concept: what does the customer need and how can we facilitate that need? More and more clients have turned to service providers to run their increasingly demanding data and IT needs and to lessen the need for in-house servers and racks and the costs associated with them. Pay as you go services (PAYG) in the data industry now account for a large portion due to the ease of Service Level Agreement-based services (SLA-based services) from a provider
on simple terms and only having to pay for what you use. Companies now look at the total lifecycle costs of designing, building, operating and decommissioning of the critical infrastructure required for robust and reliable power and communications and then weighing this up against a service provider who can do all of that for them and with specialists on hand to oversee all aspects of the service, including continuous improvements. global companies from the Nordics rely on Coromatic for their critical infrastructure needs and that the company has a proven track record of delivering across EMEA and Asia. Over the next 12 months, the company will look at expanding their Nordic footprint to enable them to build up a stronger market share in the region. The main goal of the expansion is to ensure its market leading position across all four home markets; Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Of course there are many options open across Europe as well and with data being big business in Germany and Holland, Coromatic see this as a good time to begin to venture south into mainland Europe. “There is always the potential for expansion in the Nordic regions and we are already looking at doing this over the next year. a market leader in another country is something else. I believe that the time is right for us to look at the potential markets in mainland Europe with a view to entering them in due course. Germany and Holland are two of the biggest IT service countries and with the backing of our vast experience and industry knowledge, I think we can really set up a strong business there,” cites Tollsten.
Evolving the Service
Having been in the sector for over 20 years, Coromatic know how to offer clients exactly the services that will benefit them. With a strong portfolio of services and options, the Nordic services provider has been swift to adopt new and innovative technologies. Alongside the innovation of Coromatic is the intrinsic need to show potential and existing
customers that trust is paramount to them. Each and every industry has different standards and guidelines that need to be adhered to during the process. That’s why Coromatic work with the organisations that set the standards for security and environmental aspects. Coromatic deliver and operate critical facilities according to ISO27001, LEED, Uptime Tier standard, The European Code of Conduct for Energy Efficiency in Data Centre, ISAE4302 and PCI Security Standards. With a current market share of 20% in the Nordic market, Coromatic have set their sights on gaining an even bigger share. By offering solutions to customers for optimisation of performance and cost, Tollsten is confident customers will soon be looking to offload a large part of their total critical facility solutions to companies in order to concentrate on running the business and when they do, Coromatic will be there to help them: “More and more companies, especially SME’s, are looking at offloading their complex but critical infrastructure in buildings, regardless if those are hospitals, corporate headquarters, industrial plants or data centres, to providers in order to concentrate on the core business. We offer them specialist knowledge and expertise in running and maintaining systems and doing so without the customer ever having to worry about

what is being done. It is peace of mind we give the clients as well as services,” remarks Tollsten.
Another Twenty Years
By building a strong foundation from which to grow a company on is always going to benefit you in the long run. For Coromatic, the foundation was set 22 years ago and has remained solid ever since. Critical facilities requirements will continue to grow and demand more of service providers and Tollsten is confident that Coromatic have all the right tools and expertise to ensure that they remain one of the Nordic’s strongest players in the market. “Watching Coromatic grow is something that I am very much looking forward to. We have already seen our user base grow strongly with more and more companies bringing their data requirements to us. Of course a lot of this has come from word of mouth and that it is very important for us to remain loyal to our core value of always focusing on what the customer needs as opposed to what the customer should have. We will never push a product on a client but rather show them the options open and let them make an informed decision, this is what Coromatic is all about,” concludes Tollsten.

WHAT D OES BUSINESS WANT FROM THE CLOUD?
The companies who use iomart’s services are primarily looking for peace of mind, a secure and stable service and a provider they can trust. Regardless of business size or budget, our clients want a service that is always on 24/7/365 days a year and can be adapted to their needs. One big focus is predictable pricing. In the same way you know what you pay for your smartphone, businesses want their cloud services to be the same price month-on-month. Our goal therefore is to turn a customer’s IT CapEx into OpEx by shouldering the burden of large outlays for IT infrastructure and maintenance. This lets more companies with tighter budgets better access to a high level of IT services which are maintained by us, while keeping a limit on their monthly spend. Businesses using the cloud also want a meaningful service agreement with their provider. Inside every one of our data and network centres we have dedicated employees who work for iomart ensuring that every aspect of the service is under our name. We are fully accountable and to further
40
highlight our service agreement and our confidence in the services we offer, we have fixed financial penalties in the event of any disruption. We pay a premium if the service goes down and stand by this as proof of how much we value our relationship with our customers. Finally, businesses using cloud services want a trusted relationship with a provider who they can talk to and get support from. Most big public cloud providers like AWS have a ticket system where you fill in your details and someone will get back to you within 24 hours. While this is ok if the issue is low priority, we pride ourselves on offering the personal touch of an experienced technician on the end of the phone all day, every day, to help regardless of size or priority. Maintaining a strong relationship with our existing customers is just as important as bringing new ones in because repeat and continuing business is the cornerstone of any successful company.

We pride ourselves on offering the personal touch of an experienced technician on the end of the phone all day, every day HOW HAS IOMART EVOLVED TO MEET THOSE REQUIREMENTS?
iomart is continually evolving by investing in the latest technologies to deliver the agile and reliable cloud services that our customers need to run their businesses. Flexible hybrid cloud solutions are just one of the ways we have developed to meet the needs of a new generation of companies looking to use our services. Hybrid cloud gives companies the chance to pick and mix the services

they want from us, such as email, data storage, hosting and backup while keeping others in-house. This way they retain the flexibility to keep some of their IT infrastructure under their direct control - in-house or in a private cloud - but can outsource elements to the public cloud which can be very cost effective. Over the next five years you will see the number of companies keeping their entire service offering in-house drop, with the majority looking to adapt to a hybrid cloud format in an 80/20 spilt. Some industries such as banking that use legacy systems from the ‘70s, will never move all their services into the cloud but iomart can offer both types of customer a package and service to suit their individual needs. We see ourselves as an agnostic cloud company so we work with a business to create a hosting package and service platform that integrates with their existing systems. If it is necessary to move your data from another provider or an in-house system, we have fully connected and linked migration systems to ensure minimum interruption of service. We are a cloud computing company that can offer and manage any type of cloud-based requirement to suit any need.
WHERE IS THE MARKET FOR CLOUD SERVICES HEADED AND HOW WILL IOMART FEATURE IN THAT?
The cloud market is progressing and evolving all the time. Businesses want to know how cloud can benefit them and senior managers, including CEO’s, are taking a serious look at the cloud as an alternative to in-house IT. Despite this momentum, there are still a lot of companies with very little knowledge and understanding of the cloud. Our aim is to become a leading light in showing what it offers and help them make informed choices to move their IT systems forward. There are three things defining the future and they are: mobile; faster and more reliable connectivity; and the ability to manage and store data. These three trends are interconnected to each other and to our data centres and the increasingly sophisticated technology they contain. As we learn more about our customers’ requirements and how they are planning to use the cloud within their businesses we will continue to develop our products and services to give them what they need, on-demand, to cope with those changing needs.

Cloud Approach PAUL K JEFFREY IOMART TECHNICAL ACCOUNT DIRECTOR WHAT ARE THE KEY FACTORS FOR USING THE CLOUD?
The cloud gives us the opportunity to access our work and data anywhere in the world, meaning flexibility when a company is operating internationally. Customers predominantly fall into two categories: the first is companies who need web and cloud services to streamline and enhance existing capabilities and online services including email and accounting. The second is companies looking for cloud storage and hosting capabilities because they haven’t got the time or expertise to store their data on self-maintained servers. What they both want is the same services that help them ensure their businesses run smoothly. Data speed is a key factor for customers operating across multiple locations. A prime example is that of architects who handle huge CAD files for clients. Being able to send a file to a client or colleague in another location instantaneously is something that is of huge benefit when you work across different time zones. Security is key for any company using the cloud. With recent breaches of cloud software in the news, many
companies look at cloud as being vulnerable to hacking and data theft. It is not that simple though. Most breaches come from username and password combinations that have been leaked or stolen for services that are often free or low-cost. Providers like iomart spend a lot of time and investment ensuring that our security is not only of the highest order but also monitored continually for the slightest disturbance.
HOW SHOULD BUSINESSES APPROACH THE CLOUD?
The most common approach is the hybrid cloud approach where a company sets up an IT environment where they operate and maintain some IT services in-house, for example storage and accounting, but will have others provided by a third party , for example email and web hosting. For instance, a business that has data and files that are considered non-essential can store them on internal servers quite happily. That same business will then use a service provider like us to house its sensitive data – maybe financial, personnel or customer information - in a much more secure way. It offers the perfect and most cost-effective balance of IT services. We often see peaks and troughs
throughout the year from companies whose business is seasonal. Christmasrelated industries might have a three month window of business so they rent the IT services needed for that period on a pay-as-you-use agreement. This keeps costs lower as there is no need to buy hardware and set up the systems, meaning the business can concentrate on its customers while leaving the IT services required in specialist hands. This ensures it remains fully connected and streamlined through the high volume periods. When the season is over, there are no overheads left to pay for or hardware left gathering dust.
W H AT P R O D U C T S AND SERVICES ARE YOU PROVIDING TO HELP BUSINESSES E M B R A C E T H E C L O U D?
iomart offers a full range of services and packages, including managed cloud hosting, cloud applications, data storage and security and cloud services, which can be individually tailored to a company’s specific needs. With businesses relying more and more on technology we have responded to the need for faster and bigger data capacity. We recently opened our first software defined data centre – our tenth facility in the UK – which allows us to set up services automatically. The facility carries Tier 3+ accreditation which means it has multiple independent distribution paths serving our IT equipment, although only one distribution path normally serves the equipment at any given time. All our equipment is dual powered so, in the rare event of a power outage, our customers’ services remain unaffected. With a dark fibre network connecting all our data centres, we can store and transmit large amounts of data securely and in the fastest way possible as well as spin up new services quickly.

Cloud Partners BILL STRAIN IOMART CHIEF TECHNICAL OFFICER WHICH TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS DO YOU WORK WITH AND WHY? We work with a number of globally recognised partners including Microsoft, EMC, Cisco, VMware, Dell and Asigra. When you offer a service to companies who deal in millions of pounds worth of revenue you have to be sure that your services are reliable and you have done your due diligence on what your partners can offer. That is why working with partners who have proven reputations in the market is so important. Organisations are far less tolerant of failure and disruption in IT services nowadays so by working with globally recognised partners who put customer service at the top of their agenda, as we do, is vital.

about protection. We have invested in network level DDoS protection as a proactive move to secure our own infrastructure and offer our customers availability protection as part of their core services. Business and Enterprise should understand that cloud services when coupled with the right provider can be intrinsically more secure than those hosted in-house. A cloud provider can create build and deploy a service for any given company then relinquish access – in some cases PCI even demands that the hosting provider is demoted to limited access and elevated access is only granted on demand. Our investment in a private dark fibre network also gives us total control over our own network, increasing security as well as speeds for our customers. With the internet getting more and more crowded and the current multiple network providers getting swamped, this gives our cloud service customers an edge over their competitors and allows us to guarantee the bandwidth between our data centres and their offices.
Security for cloud services is very complex and has many different layers to it. Many companies rely on iomart for their full data packages, so to be extra cautious they hire another company to perform a series of test attacks in order to see if there are any weak spots in our security. We welcome this as not only does it give our customers a chance to see our services in action, but it also enables HOW DOES us to see in real time where we can BUSINESS COPE strengthen our services and monitor WITH THE RISE OF any potential vulnerabilities. This is a promise to ensure reliable, lasting results with a responsible use of resources – human, natural and capital,” the website states. The goals that were introduced in 2011 all aim at continuously delivering sustainable, profitable development. By integrating sustainability into Atlas Copco’s customer-focused and operational goals, Atlas Copco can reduce costs, mitigate risks and create business opportunities. The Group creates a positive impact on society and the environment, which in turn positively affects Atlas Copco’s financial bottom line – thus, creating shared value. It is also important to highlight that life-cycle analyses show that the most significant environmental footprint is related to carbon dioxide emissions during the use of the products and to a lesser degree, during transport and in production. Energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions are the most significant indicators, but Atlas Copco also tracks and reports performance on water consumption and waste. The company recognises that climate change and emissions are serious environmental concerns. As such, their goal is to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions from the energy used in operations and from transport of goods by 20% by 2020 in relation to cost of sales. Many major production units have invested in
renewable energy sources, which has resulted in reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Atlas Copco’s energy-efficient products are continuously developed and improved to reduce emissions. For example a variable-speed drive compressor can reduce a customer’s energy consumption and related carbon dioxide emissions by up to 35%, saving the environment and reducing energy cost. The rental operation continually works to switch its rental fleet to more environmentally sound equipment to reduce its carbon footprint. Atlas Copco is using cooling agents in some products and processes. However, all cooling agents used for products have a zero ozone-depleting impact.

Overall, the company goal is to avoid creation of waste and that all waste is reused or recycled. Atlas Copco tracks various categories of waste from the production process, including regulated or hazardous waste. Metal scrap represents the most significant fraction of waste, and nearly all of this scrap is reused or recycled.
Innovation
“At Atlas Copco, we are convinced there is always a better way of doing things,” cites the website. Innovation and product development are very important for the Group. A key activity is to design new or improved products that provide tangible benefits in terms of productivity, energy efficiency and/or life cycle cost to the customer and, at the same time, can be efficiently produced. Atlas Copco protects these technical innovations with patents. This innovation also includes better processes to improve the flow and utilisation of assets and information. Consequently, this will improve customer satisfaction and contribute to strengthening customer relations, the brand, as well as the company’s financial performance. “There is always a better way” For more than a century this guiding principle has driven Atlas Copco’s engineers and designers to develop new technology and revolutionise productivity in drilling, manufacturing and other industrial processes. Hence, many of the Group’s products have become global success stories. Accompanying his mantra is a team of around 2,500 employees conducting research, design and development at dozens of sites around the world, Atlas Copco’s Group R&D hubs are located in Sweden, Belgium, India and China, but there are some smaller R&D operations in many other countries as well. As a globally recognised and respected company, Atlas Copco can be rest assured that their market-leading position can be sustained over the next decade and beyond.

This corresponds to the energy need of approximately 2,200 detached houses,” highlights Niiranen.
Expanding the Heating Network in Levi In September 2014, Adven announced the expansion of its district heating network in Levi to the new planned area of Ylä-Levi this autumn. The company mainly produces the district heating in the centre of Levi with renewable energy. As an operator in Levi since 2007, Adven has already constructed over four kilometres of district heating network in the area. The expansion of the distribution network now being built is approximately one kilometre in length and Adven recently increased its production capacity, allowing them to deliver energy efficient and renewable district heat for new customers. “The investments in the district heating production plant and the expansion of district heating network guarantee our customers safe, reliable and competitive district heat now and in the future in the YläLevi area, too,” says Adven’s Sales Manager Jussi Järvenpää. In autumn 2013, Adven introduced a second solid fuel boiler in parallel with the existing one at the Levi heating plant. Increasing the use of biofuels, mostly wood chips, improves the security of supply in the delivery of district heat. With the help of biofuels, it is also possible to keep the price of district heat competitive by reducing the use of oil in peak production during even the coldest winter days.

aligo Industria is a proud that Adven Oy selected our modern Caligo flue gas scrubber for their Nummela Biomass Plant in Southern Finland. The scrubber was delivered in September 2014 and the plant was operational in October 2014. Adven selected the Caligo flue gas scrubber due to its modern and efficient heat recovery system. Caligo Industria develops and markets product and system solutions for energy and process industry flue gas purification as well as process waste heat recovery and use.
Finnamyl’s Factory Contract September 2014 also saw the signing of a long term contract with Finnamyl Oy, a potato processing company, based on which Adven will provide an evaporation service at Finnamyl’s factory. Evaporation is an important part of Finnamyl’s progressive new production process, in which the potato cell sap produced as a by-product of starch production is refined into potato protein and concentrated fertiliser. The change in the process will reduce the factory’s environmental load with regard to both nutrient load and smell. Adven will build an evaporation plant next to Finnamyl’s factory and take responsibility for its operation. The plant will be connected to Adven’s remote monitoring system, which will ensure operations are undisturbed. “It is clear that Adven plays a significant role as an energy partner for Finnish industry, and the contract with Finnamyl strengthens this position even further. Evaporation services are a new product field for Adven; they

complement our offering of services that make industrial energy use more efficient. Our goal is to build several evaporation plants in the next few years and to convert existing evaporation plants into more energyefficient versions,” says Matti Viljo, CEO of Adven.
Competitiveness and Cost-Efficiency
With the aim of becoming the most desired energy partner in Sweden, Finland and Estonia, Adven strive to solve client’s energy needs efficiently, reliably and in a sustainable manner. It is evolution, not revolution that has kept us competitive in today’s mainstream car industry, which seems to be constantly changing its mind on what is in and what is out
Steve Morris, Managing Director of Morgan Motor Company holds the belief that it is evolution, not revolution that keeps Morgan competitive in an increasingly mainstream market: “When you look back at the classic Morgan cars that have been produced, you see a look and style that has remained the same. It is elegance that has been quietly refined and modified but has always remained true to the original design. It is evolution, not revolution that has kept us competitive in today’s mainstream car industry, which seems to be constantly changing its mind on what is in and what is out.” With prices ranging from only £32,995 for a 4/4 Morgan and up to £130,000 for an aluminium platform car, owning a Morgan has never been easier. Currently manufacturing around 1000 cars every year - including 500 traditional vehicles, 100 aluminium and 300 three-wheelers - Morgan are looking closely at bringing

British sports cars into the orient. Subsequently, on 23rd August this year, Yong Da Automobiles of Shanghai opened their first Morgan Cars Showroom, which will service as a showcase for Morgan Motor Company in east China, adding Britain’s oldest privately held car company to the portfolio of Yongda and includes Jaguar, Land Rover and BMW. The new showroom is decorated with a pair of brand new Morgan Plus 4’s and the grand opening was attended by a total of 50 high ranking local authorities, VIP guests and media. “The Asian market offers a lot of potential for sales and enables us to bring the Morgan brand to new shores. When you look at the brands already represented here Jaguar, Landrover, BMW, these are world renowned brands and Morgan will stand alongside them proudly and confidently,” cites Morris.
100 Years at Pickersleigh Road
2014 marks 100 years of Morgan production at the world famous Pickersleigh road site in Malvern. As part of the celebrations for this incredible milestone, the Morgan Motor Company have produced a series of short videos about the world famous location, which are viewable on their website. Years of Pickersleigh Road showcases what makes Morgan so exquisite and hears from the people behind the scenes at the oldest privately owned car manufacturer in the world. “Reaching 100 years at the same site is a huge achievement and one that we are immensely proud of. We celebrated our centenary in the summer with a weekend event and to commemorate this occasion we have produced a limited edition Speedster. It has some new features and clearly highlights the achievement of the company on its bodywork,” remarks Morris. The Morgan Plus 8 Speedster will hark back to the days of 60’s sports car with no hood or windscreen and will remain true to its roots as a lightweight, thoroughbred sports car. It will have a thumping 4.8l V8 BMW engine nestled in its custom built body and with just a run of 60 cars, it has become one of the most sought after cars Morgan offers.
Special Projects and the Birth of the Morgan SP1 The Morgan SP1 (Special Project 1) is a one-of-a-kind bespoke creation that was specially commissioned by a customer who wanted to use the spare body from the 2009 LifeCar concept vehicle Morgan produced, and turn it into a unique car. The finished product is a thing of beauty. A 3.7l V6 engine, dedicated Engine Management System and custom sports exhaust are stunningly encased in a wooden coach-built body constructed in Ash wood and African Bubinga Red Hardwood, chosen specifically by the client. On top of this sits a cutting edge-designed aluminium shell that is sculpted, streamlined and finished to perfection. “The SP1 showcases every aspect of the skilled craftsmanship utilised at Morgan; harnessed over 105 years of bespoke, coach-built design and crafting. The client saw the spare aluminium body and instantly wanted
to evolve it into his own Morgan car. After speaking with him about his design and ideas, we began work. One constant that remains throughout any commission process, especially in our Special Projects division is the question ‘is it in-keeping with the Morgan brand?’ We always keep one eye on the brand and one eye on the future. That way Morgan Motor Company can continue to produce cars that are the
perfect blend of history and future,” cites Morris.

The business is also proud to reveal the opening of their new training academy this year, with the first two apprentices already going through the programme. The training academy is something that is very close to Morris’ heart after he began his career 31 years ago as an

The academy was born when the management team looked at the options for the future and how Morgan could ensure that the new generation of employees were skilled and taught in the ways of the brand. Modern apprentices for a craft based company are not necessarily taught the extra skills that may be needed in their role such as finance, health and safety or lean manufacturing. With any trainee brought into Morgan, the senior managers are always on the lookout for potential management trainees and those who show promise in other areas of leadership. The training academy was designed to ensure that all trainees were

schooled in not only their relevant department but also on how their role fits into another department’s role and how they contribute to the bigger ‘Morgan’ picture. “I started out as an apprentice 31 years ago and it was through the training I received that I worked my way up to where I am today. The overriding goal of the academy is to take a group of new recruits and broaden their bandwidth of knowledge. There will always be varying levels of capabilities within that group, but some of them, whether painters or metal workers will show an aptitude for management. Could you give us a brief overview of Bella Bulgaria?
Bella is a market leader in the food industry in Bulgaria, with a portfolio of over 200 products focusing on the creation of meat, milk, oils and pastry products. Since the establishment of the company in 1992, we have been following an upward trend of development, which in 2013 resulted in the company making over EUR 130 million. The company uses advanced technologies to monitor production processes and has implemented systems for Quality Management; namely ISO 9001:2008, ISO 22000 and IFS (International Food Standard) across our facilities. We operate a successful business in Southeast Europe, where we employ 3,000 people in Bulgaria alone, and we export to more than 20 countries worldwide including; USA, Spain, Turkey, Australia, Armenia, Germany, Britain, France, Cyprus, Holland, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and the Lebanon. We owe this success to our excellent business strategy, long term planning and the continuous introduction of global know-how.
What advantages do you have over your competitors?
Our innovative products are one of our strongest advantages in the complex and ever changing food industry. Consumers are always on the lookout for new products, new tastes and most importantly, variety. Can you tell me about the supply chain involved in food manufacturing?
Raw materials are the most crucial part of any company in the food processing industry. They are essential and in direct correlation with the quality of the final product. If the raw product you use is of a lesser quality, your end product will also be of lesser quality. That is why it really is important to only use the highest quality ingredients from the beginning. At Bella, we have built a system of stringent measures with clear and specific parameters to control the quality and origin of the raw materials that we use in our products. We only work with companies that meet our high standards and our partners are proven companies, many of which are established names in the global industry.
What are the areas of Corporate Social Responsibility that Bella Bulgaria are working in?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is at the heart of the sustainable and socially responsible business model of Bella. The company carries out its commitments as a responsible citizen by actively working with employees, partners and the public for causes dedicated to solving important social problems. Bella is one of the members of the Bulgarian Forum of Business Leaders, which is the leading organisation in Bulgaria devoted to promoting the principles and values of corporate social responsibility; and is something we take great pride in. Energy efficiency is part of the company’s CSR and green business strategy. We strive to ensure a strong balance between productivity and implementing clean technologies and reducing our carbon footprint. Bella uses co-generation technology that is renowned as a primary

technical solution for the improvement of Europe’s environment by reducing the impact of global climate change and reducing the local emissions of particulate, such as sulfur and nitrogen oxides. Bella recently became one of the nine founders of the first Bulgarian Food Bank, an organisation aimed at providing healthy nourishing food to those who do not have access to proper nutrition. Our company is one of the regular donors of food products for the needs of the organisation and our employees participate in fundraising campaigns for those living below the poverty line.

Bella recently became one of the nine founders of the first Bulgarian Food Bank, an organisation aimed at providing healthy nourishing food to those who do not have access to proper nutrition What are your business goals and forecasts for 2014 and beyond?
Our main focus for the rest of this year and into 2015 is to continue developing a new line of innovative and tasty products and then enter those products into the markets across Southeast Europe. The success of our products in Romania and Greece is down to selling goods that are in keeping with the taste preferences of local consumers. For example, in Greece, where the bakery traditions stretch back generations, our products are loved because we create products that closely match the taste and traditional recipes of the country. Alongside this, we will continue to create new and exciting products for the Bulgarian markets, with each of our brands investing in the study of taste and consumer habits, to best understand and analyse what the customer wants next. Finally, we will carefully look at geographic expansion by entering new foreign markets in neighboring countries and look to garner the same success that we have seen in Romania and Greece.

Our 450 patents have resulted in leading precast innovations in machines and technologies for producing extruded hollow-core slabs, sandwich walls and non-load bearing Acotec walls costs, higher profitability and better quality, whilst not compromising the requirements of a modern building. “Our customers are in the precast business of floors, walls, frames and foundations - or even all three. With us you can choose from the widest portfolio of precast manufacturing solutions worldwide. This guarantees that you always get the smartest match for your needs. Sometimes it means renewal of a single machine. Sometimes a complete precast plant.” Through decades of experience, Elematic have learnt about the
varying needs for capacity, automation and flexibility involved in the precast process. Based on these insights the company offer precast production lines in three different technology levels - SEMI, PRO and EDGE. “Our 450 patents have resulted in leading precast innovations in machines and technologies for producing extruded hollow-core slabs, sandwich walls and non-load bearing Acotec walls for example.” Precast is an industrialised way to build and advantageously, this means it has lower lifetime costs

than any other building solution. This is due to consistent high quality of industrially produced products. Precast minimises long term constructional issues such as structural and facade maintenance needs over the years. Material handling is easier meaning that less scaffolding is needed, and the material can be combined with steel or utilised as a composite structure only. “With precast, logistics needs are minimal and it works in almost all environments. Precast floors, walls, frames and foundations are transported to a construction site ready-to-install. Logistics are arranged with just one delivery vehicle instead of several raw material transfers back and forth. What’s more is that precast can
